By: Marielle LeendersThere are 2 events that immediately come to my mind when presented with prompt 2. The first event was last year during Thanksgiving break and the second event took place this year during December.
The first event was at a warehouse where we going to package food in boxes and eventually people less fortunate will come and get the boxes as their Thanksgiving meal. This was when my Key club didn’t have that many members so it was kind of awkward being only 4-5 actual members there while everyone else had big groups. After they opened the place, before they gave the run down of what we were going to do, they offered everyone some donuts and kolaches. Then we got to work, on the tasks that we were given. There were at least 4 tasks, you could either push a cart as people filled up the boxes in your cart, you could fold the boxes, you could close the box after everything has been put inside, or you could be the person who put stuff into the boxes. I first started out as a cart pusher and had to go down an aisle of people as they put many different Thanksgiving treats in the boxes. When I reached the end, people would tape my box up and then put it on a shelf for later when people would come by. Then I would repeat that process all over, it was very repetitive so I swapped out with my club members on pushing the cart. So then I started to fill up people’s carts, I was putting in cans of corn if I remember correctly. Eventually, after what felt less than 3 hrs it came to an end. I said my goodbyes to my fellow club members as I left.
The second event was right next to my school. Our city hosts an annual Christmas light-up drive-by that people can go see. Volunteering there we got to just make sure that everything was good and then just got to greet people as they went around. Especially when they eventually park near the end and get out to where we had Santa Clause. It was super fun to see all those kids' faces light up, it really made my week.
