Kaki Persimon® Bouquet: 25 years of the taste of autumn

One of the finest autumn fruits, Kaki Persimon® Bouquet celebrates its 25th birthday.

To discover its origins, we must go back five decades, when farmers in the Valencian region of Ribera del Xúquer (Spain) discovered a native kaki variety which they called “Rojo Brillante”.

In the 1990s, consumers were relying on the classic “Rojo Brillante” kaki, which was soft and eaten with a spoon, a characteristic that limited its use not only to domestic consumption but also restricted its geographical distribution, since its limited shelf life meant it could not be marketed outside the Iberian peninsula.

With improvements to methods of ripening, the astringency of the fruit pulp could be removed while the kaki was hard and crunchy and at its optimum degree of ripeness while fully maintaining flavour. To distinguish it from the classic soft kaki, it was from then on given the name Persimon® .

Anecoop, one of the leading producers and marketers of fresh fruit and vegetables in Europe, markets the Kaki Persimon® under its Bouquet brand, coupled with the Kaki Ribera del Xúquer designation of origin, an official certification that is officially stamped and numbered on each package. The Regulatory Council is responsible for checking production methods as well as the quality, taste, appearance and packaging of each harvest within the Protected Designation of Origin Kaki Ribera del Xúquer. Only kakis certified with this denomination of origin are permitted to carry the Persimon® brand.

The launch of Kaki Persimon® 25 years ago not only extended the product’s shelf life, it also changed the way it could be eaten, making it much easier, more convenient, more versatile and more accessible to the consumer. Whether as a healthy mid-morning snack or a tasty, vitamin-rich dessert, kakis have established themselves as an essential fruit in the famous Mediterranean diet.

For it is no longer necessary to peel the fruit and eat it with a spoon. Instead, it can be eaten whole, with or without its skin. And as it has no stone or seeds, there is no waste. Hardly surprising then that the Kaki Persimon® Bouquet is now so popular with so many consumers.
