has sprung! Ev erything seems to have a new life, and who doesn’t love a fresh start? It doesn’t mean leaving everything behind, but moving forward. Whether it’s realising what are your most important values or setting up goals for the future, focusing on yourself is a key to make progress in life. When creating a new issue, I always have a desire to encourage and inspire our readers to think outside the box. To be more mindful and conscious. To believe that can make a positive impact in the world. To build a feel-good life. To have fun.

Talking of fun, we can all agree fashion reminds us to stop taking life too seriously sometimes. Luckily, fashion went a long way from just being “trendy” to becoming a “statement”. This season there will be plenty of space to make a statement whether you are considering eco denim brands instead of the obvious popular choice or high tech activewear. But the fun doesn’t stop there. Our beauty category is all about simple makeup and skincare tips. Also, we discover

why women in Korea are rebelling against strict beauty standards. On the other side, if you want to indulge yourself in some good food or wanderlust escape, don’t miss our travel essentials guide and best spots in London to try Shakshuka. This is our biggest issue yet and we are definitely looking forward to the new season. But most importantly, this issue is celebrating you and all the ways that can help you enjoy a happy life.

When shoes meet elegance

There

is nothing like a chic pair of shoes that makes your spring wardrobe pop. The one that’s perfect for office-toevent dressing, polished yet fun. Luckily, slingback flats are taking over this season, and it will be a tight game with mules. Again. Most designers and retailers don’t have a common theme this year, so there are no

limits here - go bold with bright colours, safe with neutrals or stylish with prints such as florals and polka dots. Why do we love them so much? They are definitely timeless shoes that never out of style, classic enough to be investment-worthy, yet fashionable enough to add a playful edge to your everyday style. underestimate timeless fashion classics. Refined pieces such as a black blazer, tailored trousers and white shirt are usually an epitome of sophistication and style, especially as they are suited for the years to come. But, this season it’s time to give your beloved classics a stylish update by playing around with traditional fabrics and contemporary shapes. These up-and-coming designers definitely know a thing or two about fashion-forward design and bold silhouettes. Their take on masculinity and femininity pushes the boundaries of known and give those timeless signatures an extra touch.

Handle bags Cute little show stopper

Favoured

by the Instgrammers, handle bags are the most sought-after star worthy accessory of the moment. Not surprising indeed, these cute bags challenge anyone’s love and commitment to a more practical cross body or shopper tote. They usually come in a smaller size, but are roomy enough to hold your essentials, and even more. However, what you lose in size, you get in style, as handle bags are real statement makers, especially if they feature unique design or some elements of craftsmanship. P.S. Add a hint of a ladylike vibe to your daywear by pairing it with romantic print dresses and pointed shoes.

Structural shapes and statement design -catching accessories often come in the form of bold accent colours, luxurious materials and unique shapes. Usually, those fine finishing touches are what draws us to them, especially when it comes to jewellery. These ornamental pieces are either subtle and delicate or dramatic and imposing, it seems there is no other way. Until this season. Artisans and designers have decided to add some fun flare in the accessories by playing around with a modern interpretation of classic jewels and contemporary art. It resulted in chic asymmetric and geometric earrings made of fancy materials and bright hues. The good news is that this mismatched combo actually works well, which makes it a great way to step up your accessory game.

has been around for decades, yet it still holds the title of the most favourite wardrobe staple in so many closets. It has proven to have an irresistible around-theclock stylish vibe most women are looking for in a casual outfit. But, when it comes to spring, one style has been particularly on a trend - a denim jacket. Don’t get us wrong, we love a good pair of jeans, but if you really want to effortlessly beat that mid-season chill (and take a break from the trench coat!), look no further. A denim jacket is an ultimate classic in a world of off-duty, laid back style. Make sure to inject some fun into your denim-inspired wardrobe too. That can only mean one thing though - go big on the details.

Cycling shorts

Big runway-inspired trend spotted on social media @solasta._

you want to look like you just won tour de France? Then look no further. Just kidding, cycle shorts have sneakily made their way from sportswear to casual wear and everyone is here for it. They were initially brought into the fashion world as a result of the Yeezy season 5 campaign, there were a variety of cycle shorts in different materials and colours featured. There have been multiple other adapta@kimkardashian tions of this from PLT to Fendi, adding their own spin on it as they go, such as; frills, mesh and pattern. I feel that this is a trend that will not be disappearing any time soon, because they literally go with everything! They can be so easily dressed down if they are paired with an oversized hoodie and with some chunky trainers such as the popular Balenciaga triple S, or they could also be dressed up when used alongside a pair of heels and a cute blazer. They are so versatile and oh so comfy at the same time. And at the end of the day, if Kim K is doing it, maybe should we.

LOOSE THE CHEMICALS

E.L.V, Denim

E.L.V. is an acronym for East London Vintage - the brand takes vintage denim and transforms it into modern jeans in their, you guessed it, East London studio. Each pair is made up of two halves of vintage jeans, so every model is entirely unique in its colour and fit. They take zero waste concept very seriously so all the jeans are made without any impact on the environment, minimising waste, water and energy footprints.

It takes 10 000 litres of water to make a single pair of jeans which includes growing cotton, manufacturing and fabric dying. Not to mention chemicals, waste, energy and cheap labour. Meet fair trade and eco-friendly denim brands who are stepping up their game so you can shop guilt-free.

Re/Done

As they say Re/Done is not just a denim company, they are a movement. A movement that wants to create sustainable fashion by keeping the heritage of iconic brands such as vintage Levi’s. All their denim is made in Los Angeles using water conserving methods and no harsh chemicals.

MUD Jeans

MUD Jeans is a sustainable and fair trade certified denim brand based in Netherlands. They believe in circular economy and design which means waste becomes a source of new materials, in this case, denim. They are true pioneers of a Lease A Jeans model where you can lease a pair of MUD jeans for a year after you can switch for a new pair or keep them until they are worn out. However, once you returned them, they will be recycled.

Monkey Genes

The brand was founded in 2006 by Phil Wildbore as a result of a need for eco and organic denim and apparel brand on the market. All Monkee Genes garments are ethically produced in GOTS Certified factories which is a global standard for organic textiles and environmental responsibility. They are also Peta approved vegan.

aside scrunchies, there is a new hair accessory trend that is taking over this SS19. Originally appearing in Totême SS18 and resurfacing in Prada’s SS19 as an extra padded embellished Alice band, the headband is one of the must-have accessories of the season.

1

Classic

This is the best way to ease into the trend. A simple headband, delicate and thin, making it very minimalistic and chic. Choose a colour that can be versatile enough to match many of your outfits (which is also practical) like black or soft pink. Style it with t-shirt/jeans and sandals or even a power-suit to give it a feminine touch a la Dior with a twoband design.

This headband is way more dramatic in height giving your outfit an edge. Don’t be afraid to go for bolder colours rather than classics to make a statement. Materials like satin or velvet are great. Even the Duchess of Cambridge is a fan of this trend and wore it to Remembrance Sunday.

3

Sparkle

Why not add a little sparkle to your party look with crystal or pearl embellished headbands? They are the ultimate statement for your outfit and look oh so feminine. Although this trend is runway-inspired, many shops like Anthropologie, Accessorize and Forever 21 carry them as a cheaper alternative.

GLAM EYELASHES

Mascara is one of the oldest beauty tools invented and has been used since Ancient Egypt. However, the history of modern day mascara we know today dates back to 1834 when perfumer Eugéne Rimmel invented the first industrial mascara using petroleum jelly. Today, mascara is an important step of everyday makeup simply as it instantly adds a touch of glam, volume and drama to your eyes.

Nothing but mascara

By Katie Boone

I’m always in the market for a new mascara, and I found one that may have stopped the search for the foreseeable future - IT Cosmetics Superhero mascara. The brush is nothing out of the ordinary, but I like that it doesn’t come out with a ton of product on it. That feels wasteful as it’s being exposed to air, and I usually try to wipe it off so it doesn’t get all over. Steady hands early in the morning aren’t always guaranteed, and a brush that isn’t overloaded keeps me from making a huge mess. It’s also a long handle/brush which makes it easy to manoeuvre. It’s easy to use and clearly designed well. Due to watery eyes, waterproof is my go-to. This isn’t available in waterproof, and I didn’t really need it. It doesn’t budge. No fallout below the eyes, no clumps, and it holds a curl from early morning until I wash my face at night. One coat is all I need, and for impact, I’ll do a little extra on the tips. I have naturally long lashes, and even if I extend the brush all the way to the ends of my lashes, it doesn’t transfer onto my lids as some mascaras do. It’s truly amazing... my lashes don’t break off as they usually do when I’m removing my makeup either. ISSUE 6 | FASHIONTOGO-FTG.COM

Facial oils

Why are they worth the buzz and how to find the right one for your skincare concern

Oily skin FACE THEORY Organic coldpressed marula oil, £14.99

Acne-prone skin In order to fight the acne go for oils that contain lavender, tea tree or witch hazel as well as AHAs and glycolic acids..

Choose: tea tree oil.

If you have an oily skin, look for a face oil that balances the sebum production, however, it’s important not to overuse it.

Great option: marula oil.

ISSUE 6 | FASHIONTOGO-FTG.COM

Healthy

skin is happy skin, isn’t it? We all want to believe it, but when we think about bright and glowing skin, sometimes it seems like a mission impossible. But wait…. there’s something that might do the trick. Meet face oils! Face oils are underrated liquid miracles that go a long way. There’s a common misconception that oils clog pores and leave your skin feeling greasy, but that’s not completely the way. In fact, they can help regulate your skin’s oil production. The right oils can easily transform your complexion, moisture and brighten the skin, clear the acne and reduce the wrinkles.

PAI Rosehip bioregenerate oil, £24

Ageing skin

The best option for anti-ageing is a lightweight oil with natural ingredients that will brighten and smooth your skin. Best choice: rosehip oil.

Combination skin

Look for an oil that is moisturising enough on your dry areas, yet breathable enough to control the sebum AKA excess shine. Choose: jojoba oil.

They work for all skin types, however, it’s important to find the one that works best for you. Natural oils such as argan, jojoba, marula, rosehip and tea tree can help with many skin concerns such as acne, blemishes, increased sebum production, redness and signs of ageing. To incorporate face oils in your daily skincare routine and to use them in a most beneficial way, the key is to apply them the last. Skincare products should be applied in order of thickness, so start with cleanser, followed by toner, serum and moisturiser, and finish with the oil. The best time to use them is the night as they are most easily absorbed. Also, you should keep the bottle in the dark spot such as a cupboard, as exposure to light and heat can damage the oil.

Escape the closet

Why do South Korean women rise up against strict beauty standards? By Apoorva Pant

Imagine

this: a broad forehead, la- zy eyes, big lobes, fat nose, thin lips and long face. How pretty is the image just painted? The line above must have led to a somewhat distasteful imagination; not a face someone would look twice at if passed by on the street. When we think of beauty, we are conditioned to imagine a dainty face. But what about fine-looking achievable ways? An ideal Korean has long hair, coloured eyes, fair skin, sculptured nose and cherry-like lips. Presently, the market is flooded with a wealth of K-beauty products; from skincare to makeup, women all over the globe are aiming to look as flawless as the Kore-

ans. Nevertheless, for Korean women, beauty comes in an array of ten steps, and no less. It ranges from thorough cleansing and moisturising to dolling up; a skilled devotion of hours that girls are taught early.

Beauty standards

Baek Sang Hui is a 19-year-old girl who started using makeup when she was eleven. “Everyone wants to hear they’re beautiful”, she says, “I wore foundation to school, followed every step of the makeup routine just so I could be called that.” The net worth of

South Korea in the year 2018 was 16.68 billion USD, according to statista.com. Hyejung Jeong, a 28-year-old, said “We live in a patriarchal system, so we have to be pretty to be loved by men.” Women are repetitively reminded that they can look lovely only when they work for it. They follow a routine, so methodical, it takes up to two hours to design a good-looking face, every single day. For those who still aren’t convinced by the reflection they see in the mirror opt for plastic surgery. In an article by Al Jazeera that talks about the non-invasive surgeries and the youth’s bend towards it, a plastic surgeon at Banobagi Plastic Surgery

Clinic reported saying that the plastic market in South Korea was worth $5bn. Women aim to achieve “Gangnam beauty” which are the stereotypical Caucasian features, by going under the knife. For some, it is even a graduation present! The horrors of such standards of beauty, over the decades, have made women insecure and vulnerable. It reached to a height that when a news anchor wore her glasses instead of lens that were making her eyes weary in her morning show, it became an online sensation.

The need for change

The oppression of this magnitude has led to a feminist movement called Escape the Corset. The onset of this movement was fuelled majorly by the stout patriarchal ways of South Korea to relinquish the strict beauty standards which leave women with low self-esteem. As a part of the movement, women are chopping their tresses and sport-

ing a bowl haircut while also ditching their makeup. Baek told she used a total of ten items earlier, even to get ready for school, and now just a skin lotion suffices her needs. She herself sports a bowl cut and glasses. A lot of pictures surfaced on the internet where the supporters “Strict beauty smashed their makeup until it was art on the standards leave canvas. Hyejung put up women with low a picture of herself with self-esteem.” #escapethecorset, saying she felt more like herself when she aimed to not please the people around her. In a conversation, she said, “this movement helped me take off my corset, the veil I made myself hide under to be presentable in the society. The orthodoxies that follow regarding how a woman should look is insanely high and demanding. And so, cutting my hair was liberating. After all these years, I am finally free. I am me.”

TOP PLACES TO EAT

Shakshuka in London By Lia Chaudry

ISSUE 6 | FASHIONTOGO-FTG.COM

CAFE LOREN Cafe Loren is a Middle Eastern vegetarian restaurant situated in the heart of Camden Market. Their speciality is shakshuka which is synonymous with breakfast in the Middle East. They actually serve 7 or 8 different dishes of shakshuka on their menu including The Spicy One which has fresh red peppers, fresh chilli, paprika, harissa, garlic, ginger and 2 poached eggs served with hummus and bread which was one of my favourites. They also do a tofu version catering for vegans. Definitely, recommend! Unit 005-006, Camden stables market, Camden Town, London NW1 8AH

Until last month when I visit Tel Aviv, I was totally clueless about what shakshuka was! This middle eastern is a simple dish made from baked eggs, tomato sauce and slow-roasted vegetables and spices, best eaten with fresh bread. It originally hails from Tunisia, but it’s made its way to Israel and the rest of the Middle East, where it is predominantly eaten as a breakfast dish but is versatile enough to be served as a lunch or dinner. Over the last year, it has been gaining popularity in London here are the best eateries to try it!

Nopi, Ottolenghi’s Middle Eastern-influence Soho brasserie, is, without doubt, the best place to try it! They are served in a hot pan fresh from the oven, alongside chunks of crusty sourdough bread. 21-22 Warwick Street, London W1B

The Good Egg is a team of dedicated egg-aficionados! Their shakshuka is a dish consisting of two Cotswold Legbar eggs baked in roasted peppers, cinnamon, sweet smoked paprika and cayenne pepper tomato sauce. This is topped with your choice of spicy lamb-and-beef merguez sausages or grilled halloumi and finished with a dollop of preserved lemon yoghurt, sumac and Za’atar toasted sourdough. Ground floor, Kingly Court, Kingly Street, Soho, London W1B 5PW 93 Church Street, Stoke Newington, London N16 0AS

FRANKS CANTEEN A tiny cafe in Highbury opened in October 2014 by wedding caterer Paul Warburton offers seating space for around 22 people. They serve a rotating menu of seasonal brunch and lunch dishes, and a monthly supper club showcasing different cuisines. HONEY&CO

1 tbs olive oil 1/2 medium brown or white onion, peeled and diced. 1 clove garlic, minced 1 medium green or red bell pepper, chopped 4 cups diced tomatoes, or 2 cans 2 tbsp tomato paste 1 tsp chilli powder (mild) 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp paprika Pinch of cayenne pepper (or more to taste spicy!) Pinch of sugar (optional, to taste) Salt and pepper to taste 5-6 eggs 1/2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley (optional, for garnish) Prep time: 10 Minutes Total time: 30 Minutes Servings: 5-6

Preparation

Heat the olive oil in a deep large frying pan or sauté pan on medium heat. Add chopped onion, sauté for a few minutes until the onion begins to soften then add garlic and continue to sauté till mixture is fragrant. Add the bell pepper, sauté for 5-7 minutes over the medium until softened. Stir in the tomatoes and tomato paste as well as spices and sugar. Stir well and allow mixture to simmer over medium heat for 5-7 minutes till it starts to reduce. At this point, you can taste the mixture and spice it according to your preferences. Add salt and pepper to taste, more sugar for a sweeter sauce or more cayenne pepper for a spicier shakshuka (it’s extremely spicy!) Crack the eggs, one at a time, directly over the tomato mixture, making sure to space them evenly over the sauce. The eggs will cook “over easy” style on top of the tomato sauce. Cover the pan. Allow mixture to simmer for 1015 minutes, or until the eggs are cooked and the sauce has slightly reduced. Keep an eye on the pan to make sure that the sauce doesn’t reduce too much, which can lead to burning. Garnish with the chopped parsley, if desired. Shakshuka can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. For breakfast, serve with warm crusty bread or pitta that can be dipped into the sauce. For dinner, serve with a green side salad for a light, easy meal. ISSUE 6 | FASHIONTOGO-FTG.COM

PACKING CHECKLIST

Planning your next vacay? Don’t pack without these essentials By Ellena Alice McGuinness

1

@ellenaalice

Travelling - the term I would say is vastly different a holiday. Long periods away from your home comforts means your packing needs to be on point or you’ll be trawling the shelves of a local supermarket in search of items you can only get on UK soil, which FYI is never fun. If you’re planning an adventure of a lifetime or another escape from the norm, then organisation is key here. For me, there are some necessities I find I always reach for and which ultimately help me to get the best out of any destination.

2 3

CULTURE TRIP is a website and app where local people post articles about places. Whether it is what to experience in a day or where to eat there is an abundance of write ups you can take inspiration from. If you plan on going outside of the EU but also feel like you’ve lost a limb without constant internet access like me then a FLEXI-ROAM SIM is your saving grace. There are other versions online but I snapped up this one from Amazon and it helped me no end when in Africa, not just for updating my Instagram but letting my family know I was alive and well. I take so many pictures on my phone, we’re talking hundreds a week(or even a day) especially whilst on the road because you never want to miss a moment. Your phone only has so much storage and as well as backing up onto the iCloud I like to free up space for even more sunny snaps. I use the GOOGLE PHOTOS APP which after uploading and deleting from my phone itself lets me access all my images through the app and stores them on my Google account.

The shelves of beauty shops are lined with fancy creams, serums and oils but I inevitably reach for the ALL-IN-ONE MOISTURISER. Cheap as chips and so multifunctional it’s unbelievable. For instance, not only is a great everyday moisturiser but you can lay it on thick for a deep hydration mask or even whack it in the fridge to be used as a supercooling after sun. HOW

clean is your home

We love to believe that we live clean in many ways, especially in our home. But what does it really mean and what is the price for it?

ACTUALLY

Clean living is a life-

style, an attitude, the way of thinking. It means being good to the planet, people and animals in all aspects of living, whether is it organically grown food, green beauty, conscious fashion or eco-friendly home. Most of us like to think that we live clean, more literally though, especially when it comes to our home. Many people nowadays thrive to have a neat and clean house in order to maintain physical and mental health, especially when dealing with stress. Which is great, of course, since killing sick-causing germs can help your health. Nevertheless, organised home makes it easier to live relaxed and optimistic life, and it’s proven to help us to be more social too. However, little do we know what it takes to have a perfectly clean home when reaching for cleaning products. As much as it sounds irrelevant or even funny, picking the right household cleaners is really important. Look at that from a different angle. Most women tend to buy high-quality skincare, not only because of the luxury experience but also as we know that using bad and toxic ingredients can actually harm our skin.

So what would home cleaning be any different? After all, all those chemical go straight to the air that you, your family and pets breathe. Not to mention toxic ingredients and chemicals that go directly into our skin and can cause health problems (parabens, triclosan, phthalates, chlorine). According to the research published by the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine ”cleaning activities in women, whether at home or as an occupation, may constitute a risk to respiratory health, not only in terms of asthma, but also in terms of long-term impact on lung function decline.” On the other side, most home cleaning brands use plastic packaging that ends up in the ocean if not recycled.
