ON THE COVER Colton Lyons entered his first race ever at the OSDR Watermelon Bash Hare Scramble. Colton is a third generation FTR racer. His father, Clay Lyons, and granfather, Dwayne Lyons, also raced this event. Head to page 16 to find out more on the event.
EDITORS NOTE It is hard for me to believe we are approaching the halfway mark of the season already. It feels like HS #1 was just the other week. So far, this season has been an excellent one. We’ve been lucky this season so far weather wise. I can only remember one race being very hot and the rain has held off for the most part. Race entries have been historically high and with cooler weather in the forecast, I can only imagine they will stay this way.

We have some great courses coming up. January will see Mondon Hil and Snake River, two of JANUARY 2021
the longest running, current properties, in FTR. In February we will head south to Indiantown for both the TCTR and Big O Hare Scrambles (different properties) that provide some fast flowy woos sections. In March, we have the Alligator Sprint Enduro that will take place during Daytona Bike Week. After that we head to Dade City for the NCTB race. It should be an exciting next few months! PREZ SAYS thing was hand written from sign up to the results. Scores were eventually posted and we actually had a trophy presentation for each class, of course there were only maybe a dozen or so classes total.
My View Here it is getting close to the holidays with much anticipation of also getting into the second half of our season. Our first five hare scramble events have been something to talk about. Record numbers of entries and lots of new faces coming through the gate is a welcome site as our sport is starting to strengthen and grow. So many new members and a lot of old members coming back have brought the starting grid to full capacity. Of course this also provides the opportunity to bench race about the old days of when it was just a one day event and it took at least a dozen people to manually score each race. We also had three events on Sunday, 10:00, 12:00 and 2:00, which also meant that every-
Locations like River Ranch, Pratt Whitney, Arcadia KOA campground were places that left memories like, starting out in about a foot of water and running through mud waist deep where line selection was key. Those were days that everything had to go right and you had to have some luck if you wanted a trophy. Our enduro series was one tough event even to finish let along trophy. Waist deep water, mud holes and trail so tight that if you didn’t have you bars cut down to at least 28”or 26”, you were in for a tough day as single track trail meant you had to have a hinge in the middle of your bike to bend around the trees. CRC was the normal can of moisture repellent that saved a lot of us that tried to cross the rivers and ponds as the points and condensers didn’t like water.
Fast forward to today with the E-button and fuel injection and the mud and water doesn’t bother most of us, except for me. We have come such a long way from the days of fouled plugs and watering out that it’s almost unbelievable that we are building bridges and making highways through the woods that if we can’t run three abreast, it’s too tight! Those days of 40 and 50 years ago bring back some good memories, but I wouldn’t want to go back to them. Appreciate what we have today and take care of what we have and we will be able to enjoy many more years of making memories. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul FTR President
I could go on and on about how it used to be when we rode DT1’s, TM’s, SL 175’s, Bighorns and some off brands like Ossas, Bultacos and these new things called KTM’s.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” We may suffer in illness but compared to eternity with Jesus, it is just seconds.
Starting Line to Checkered Flag… “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 Welcome to a new year! 2020 is behind us (thankfully) but it definitely left it’s mark. Sadly, many of us know or know of someone who passed because of COVID or a secondary condition. I lost a good friend in December. He and his wife were the ones who first introduced me to the Christian Motorcyclist Association back in 1991. Mike was small in stature but a giant in his love for Jesus. When we lose someone the question always arises, “Where are they now?” Like my friend, if you have a personal relationship with Jesus, the answer is a strong “in Heaven with Jesus”!! 2 Corinthians 4:17 states,” For our light and momentary troubles are
Romans 5:21 continues the promise. The sin in the world may have brought us to a physical death but, “So that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. And that eternal life is guaranteed. We can never lose our relationship with Jesus. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one (John 10:28-30). By confessing our sins, we agree with God that we cannot earn His love by what we do. We place our faith in the forgiving love of Jesus. “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession...( 1 Timothy 6:12)
What if you’re right? And he was just another nice guy What if you’re right? What if it’s true? They say the cross will only make a fool of you And what if it’s true? But what if you’re wrong? What if there’s more? What if there’s hope you never dreamed of hoping for? What if you jump? And just close your eyes? What if the arms that catch you, catch you by surprise? What if He’s more than enough? What if it’s love? Jesus is waiting to meet you! Call on His name and start your eternity! Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA

WATERMELON BASH VI RACE REPORT For the sixth year the Florida Trail Riders schedule brought racers down to the southwest corner of the state. The Watermelon Bash is held at “The Farm which sits east of Punta Gorda, Florida. This is fourth year we have used the west of State Road 31 side of the property and the club (Old School Dirt Riders) seems to have the course layout dialed in. If you look at this property from a satellite view you may notice there are not much woods to work with. The club did a great job of breaking up the many
field sections with short woods sections, before ultimatley running down the treeline for a long, flowy section. Something new for this year was a creek crossing that brought you to the backside of the property. The club dumped some rocks in the creek to ensure it would not get dug out. Smart move! The backside of the property featured an awesome palm hammock section that featured a plethora of lines to choose from. The ditches in the fields also
FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
provided a unique challenge as riders were forced to decide to hop over the ditches and save time or slow down and ride through the ditch, losing time but not risking a potential crash. This property might be the best on the schedule as far as spectating goes. The fields run all the way down the entrance road providing an ample amount of spots to catch your favorite rider. In addition to the fields the treeline ran parallel to the parking area allowing spectators to walk into the woods
and check out the sections that made this course so enjoyable. Lastly, this course featured a decent sized tabletop which allowed for the riders to get some air and show off for their friends and family (and the photographers). It is always great when a club has the opportunity to add a few unique features to the course. The OSDR event saw another increase in turnout over 2019. The 2020 event saw 833 entries, an increase in 182 from the previous year. Ryder Steffey continues his Peewee A dominance with another win over David Couto and Ryder Bischoff. In Peewee B Cam Dozier would bring home the win. Tanner Collins grabbed his second win of the
season in Peewee C, this will advance him into the Peewee B class starting next race. Gentry McBride, Avery Colllins, Jackson Hancock, Beau Collins and Kaden Hamilton would win their Peewee classes respectively. For the 12:15 Mini race it was Jimmy Moore taking the overall win over Logan Crawford and Linkin Bischoff. These kids have been duking it out all year long. Tyler Lamb continues to hover around the top five overall on his KTM 65, he would win the 65 A class by almost eight minutes. Up next was the 2pm Saturday Junior/Vintage race where Clay Lyons took the overall and Pre Modern A win, Jacob Gilliam would finish second behind Clay aboard his XR. Korbin
JANUARY 2021
Dinkel continues his hot streak with a Junior A win and third overall. Brandon Frazier took home the Quad High Point finishing ahead of seasoned veterans, Michael Relyea and Chuck W Piper. On Sunday we saw Clay Lyons grab another overall win, this time in the 10:30 Specialty race. He would finish ahead of Shawn Clark for the first time this season. Barry McCarty, Kyle McAfee and Alex Mitz would round out the Top Five. On Sunday Afternoon we saw the return of Jesse Ansley, Jesse would take the overall win over Garrett Edmisten and Alex Lugar. Shoutout to Blake Yahraus with a Top Five overall on his KTM 125.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD “What is your favorite off the bike training method? Nick Doerr
I love riding my E-bike, it makes it a lot easier to keep your heart rate close to what it would be while racing dirt bikes. You don’t spike your heart rate intermittently like you would on an “accoustic” bike.
Alex Mitz
Road cycling for me. Still spending time on two wheels is important. It helps me the most with endurance and heart rate control. 3-5 hour bike rides make a 2 hour race much easier. Plus the low impact on the body is one of the best!
Editor’s Choice
Mountain biking, without a doubt. First of all I love being on the trails as it just reminds me of racing. It is also super fun and you get a great workout at the same time. Florida might be flat but we still manage to have some great trail systems.

MY START WITH FTR by Laura Fong-Yee I thought I would share a funny story of my beginning with FTR. I signed up for my first hare scramble in 2017 after I had only been riding a dirt bike for ten months. I was on a Honda CRF150RB and I looked like a circus bear on that bike. I had no idea what to expect at the hare scramble because I did not know anyone who had participated that I could ask for advice. My first race was CFTR (Bartow) in Women B. I didn’t even know there was a Beginner class because I probably would have done that instead. I remember being miserable after the practice lap, so I planned to only do one lap in the race. Well, I did not know where to exit after my first lap, so I ended up starting a second lap. A short while into the second lap I found a track worker at a water crossing. Of course, I fell over twice in the water trying to
CFTR 2017
get to him. I told him I only wanted to do one lap and wanted to exit the track. He called on the radio for someone to guide me back to the pit area. Determined to do better, I entered another hare scramble. It was Hog Waller and I finished fourth. I felt accomplished and hungry for progression. Here I am into my fourth season. I was promoted to Women A in the middle of last season and even bought a toy hauler for the races. To think I almost quit hare scrambles after my first one. I’m glad I stuck it out because FTR is a great organization. I’m happy to have met so many good people. Great memories made and good times had. I look forward too many more seasons braapping with FTR.
