ON THE COVER Josh Tolken rails a berm in practice at the Big O Big Buck Hare Scramble last season. Josh will be making the move up to A Open this year.
EDITOR’S NOTE By the time you read this we will have completed our first Hare Scramble of the season. This is always an exciting time of the year, we get to see who is moving classes, who has put in the work over summer and who has gotten some new equpment for this season. Last month I headed up to the Little Brown Jug Enduro up in South Carolina and let me tell you, it was an awesome event. The trail conditions were perfect with the perfect amount of moisture. To add to that the weather was epic
with the high in the mid 70s. Hoepfully we had that same weather at Bartow 1, but doesn’t seem likely in September in Florida. Either way, I am sure it will be an amazing event. CFTR does a great job at opening up the hare scramble season and I am sure 2021 will be no different. Best of luck to all of the racers this year and I cannot wait to start doing some race reviews in the next coming issues! Kurt Lucas Managing Editor

Ready to Start While we are all ready to line up and hear the “10 Seconds” command of our famous starter, I would like to share the many Thanks to all the unselfish volunteers that helped with this year’s banquet. So many of you worked your tails off months prior to and the entire weekend to make sure we had a great time. I’m sure that the hours and days just started to
As the excitement builds and we kick off our 21/22 season, many new faces will step into our world with uncertainty and apprehension of what they are getting themselves into. So many new families are ready to try out our world of off road, family/friend gatherings and just getting away for the weekend. FTR members have always been great hosts with friendly acknowledgements and willing to welcome new families into our world with information and suggestions. As we start our season, let’s continue to visit our neighbor and make new friends while we

set up for the weekend. Like a lot of other sports and organizations, we are seeing a tremendous increase of new members that want to see what FTR is all about and as the old saying goes; the first impression is the one that counts. Like most of us, we all had someone to help guide and show us the right way to do things and also told us the things we shouldn’t be doing. These new members are also potential club members, I know my club can use more members and I would imagine other clubs could also. Just a thought! I hope everyone has renewed their memberships, FTR, AMA and the Minor Releases as we are ready to go racing! Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

LITTLE BROWN JUG RACE REPORT Once again the Greenville Enduro Riders put on a stellar event with the LIttle Brown Jug Enduro. The conditions in the Upstate region of South Carolina were epic with minimal dust and great traction. The weather was the talk of the pits with the hottest part of the day being in the high 70s. What more could you ask for? The first test of the day was a long one, about 15 miles. I personally prefer to start
with a short test, in order to get loosened up and get the flow of the trail, but GERA had other plans. The first test featured some flowy field sections, tight off-camber woods, a few creek crossings and even a few, small, rock gardens. After the first test the riders went back to teh pits for “lunch” before heading back out for the final four tests. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a little odd going back to the
FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
truck so early. I am used to the 3 tests, lunch, and then back out for 3 more. However, after that 15 miler I wasn’t complaining. Test 2 was a more traditional 7 miles. This test featured some tight pine sections as well as some challenging hills through tight woods. The club did a great job of providing ample passing opportunities allowing for faster, and slower, riders to lose less time.
SEPTEMBER 2021
PAGE 15
Test 3 was, in my opinion, the best test of the enduro. It started out along a creek bed that had the best dirt I have ever ridden. The trail flowed up and down the side of the creek providing some slick spots that tested throttle control. After the flowy creek bed section teh trail took riders through a winding woods section with great ruts, allowing riders to charge through the corners. At only 6
miles long the test was over quick, maybe because it was so damn fun. Test 4 was the shortest out of the 5 tests, at just 5 miles. This was by far the toughest test with very tight, off-camber hills that were very technical and tested the riders skill. Passing was very tough in this test which provided another challenge on top of the terrain.
FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
Lastly, Test 5 was another long one at 12 miles. This test had everything from steep hills, logs, rocks, flowy trails and some of the tightest trails on the whole property. The last mile of the test, when your legs start to cramp and fingers can’t move, was very tight and technical. Turning the corner and seeing the finish never felt so good. Photos by Dalton Anderson

HARD ENDURO SUMMER midway point for me in the Southeastern Extreme Riders series (SEER) formerly known as American Hard Enduro (AHE). I am still running the Silver class and currently head into the last 2 rounds in 7th. Our travels have all been related to these types of “Hard Enduro” racing. Kurt- Where have the races been and is the platform similar to Harescramble or Enduro?
Coming back into racing in 2021 has been a lot of work for so many teams, companies and families. We are all so fortunate to be able to do this sport of riding around on our dirtbikes and every race track not only has unique terrain and challenges but usually a good story or two to tell of a camping moment with friends and moto family. In catching up with the riders of FTR in and around the Florida areas today we catch up with Austin Lasure and his family and race team FCS Racing to find out what they did over the 2021 FTR off season. Kurt- Austin how are you doing these days? Austin- Hey Kurt, I am doing well. Enjoying the summer days here in Florida and we have done a fair share of traveling these past few months. Kurt- What kind of traveling? Austin- Well this summer was the
Austin- The races are typically throughout North Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky. All in the mountain regions. I ran Tennessee Knockout, an AMA Extreme Championship race and The Kenda Battle of the Goats as well additionally. Most races are 3 hrs checkpoint styled and similar to Hare Scramble races just with much more difficult terrain hence the term “Hard” or “Extreme” Enduro. Kurt- So what is the allure to this style versus MX, Hare Scramble or even GNCC? Austin- Well for me I am not the best at running wide open. I like the style of conquering the terrain, some of which seems impossible even as I walk it but then the race happens and you find yourself getting after it. I came from hard units in the Army and afterwards and love the challenges. Honestly it reminds me of combat to an extent. You prepare for this unknown challenge and soon as you hit that first hill comes all your planning goes out the window. It’s very much about having a base strategy and remaining calm and thinking through the strategy of the race. I remember the first time I got shot at in Iraq. I jumped on the wrong side of a barrier and all my thoughts of what I thought would happen went out the window. The more you do it through the more you build a foundation of keeping your head together while under stress.
FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
Kurt- Are the bike setups quite different from our normal Hare Scramble setups? Austin- Actually this is one of the biggest differences. Hard Enduros typically demand a gummy tire, super soft suspension and several items to protect the bike from rocks and other objects that can damage the bike and end your race. I joke but my 300 XC rarely sees 4th gear. It’s about technique and endurance. Averaging 180 heart rates for 3-4 hours puts so much stress on your mind and your body. You start really making every movement count. Kurt- Anything else new happening in the team with FCS Racing? Austin- Absolutely! Over the summer we picked up a few new sponsors that have tremendously helped us to make races and improve on and off the bikes. Central Florida RV Center in Apopka whom I have used for years for purchasing RV’s and the work on them took us up on an offer and has been amazing supporting our Motorhome and the RV’s of team members. Central Florida Powersports is non stop supporting us in parts and thank goodness we have a great mechanic and suspension specialist with Kyle Turnis over at Moto4Play. We partnered with HBD Motografx now and have been working hard with them on all the canopies, shirts, gear and kits to meet race needs. We signed Landon Lynn as our premier AA rider again and are super stoked to have that hard working guy back on our roster. Travis Dorff has been training throughout the summer with Matt Karwat from 2020 Mx Goggles who is a super fast moto dude and Derek Haile has been out every weekend working to get ready for B Class in FTR.
in our respective classes. We do this for fun but we also take it quite seriously. Make no mistake we want those wins. We are having a great time meeting new people and making connections throughout the region. I plan to be more of a support role. I’m not in FTR for the racing aspect right now with heavy focus on hopefully stepping into the Gold or Pro class of Hard Enduro in 2022. I also have 2 boys that will be in FTR soon in 2022 as well and I am working with my oldest to prepare him properly for racing. I want to see the team cohesion grow and thrive to better ourselves with every race, challenge and adversity. Whatever comes our way we are ready! Kurt- Well thanks for the insights and if anyone wants to contact Austin Lasure team manager of FCS Racing you can reach him at austinlasure5@gmail.com or connect with them on Instagram under handle FCS_Racing_Official Thanks so much Austin for your time and we look forward to see all those red white and blue shirts and kits running around at the races!
Kurt- Last Question, any goals for the upcoming season with FTR? Austin- Our goals are primarily tobe on the box

COHEN’S CORNER
by Adam Cohen
This past weekend in Buffalo South Carolina the FTR Enduro series kicked off with the Little Brown Jug! It was awesome to finally be back at the races and get to see our FTR family again. The weather was absolutely perfect all weekend long which made for a great day of racing. I was on row 24 so the trail was in great shape for me this year, compared to last year’s starting position on row 86. The event consists of six individually scored tests which are all challenging in their own unique way. Tests 1 and 6 were extremely long compared to the others. I struggled with the hard packed soil and the extremely tight trees early on in the first test. Thirty minutes in I washed the front end while trying to avoid a log my buddy Alex Lugar shot in the trail while making a pass on me, and I realized that this race was going to be won by slowing down a bit and flowing with the trail as opposed to the normal dump the clutch and hold it wide open mentality that a lot of us Florida sand riders tend to have.
The next 4 tests were shorter tests where you were able to push pretty hard without trying to conserve energy. I was able to pace off Kyle McAfee in the opening few minutes of each test which really forced me to ride the motorcycle properly as well as focus on hitting good lines. It’s very easy to find yourself in “No man’s land” with the way the enduro events are structured so it’s extremely important to make sure you are always trying to push forward even if you’re riding solo. Test 6 was another long one but it played right into my strengths which allowed me to push my limits and win the last test which was enough to give me the win in A200. The LBJ is a fantastic race and one that I will make sure to attend as long as it’s around. I hope you guys enjoyed my write up and I look forward to improving my writing and riding throughout the season. Can’t wait to see you all at Bartow!
