120 Years Strong, Innovation Ready by Chris Reese, Chamber Chair 2014-15

First, I want to take a moment to thank Joyce Capelle and all the past chairs and board members for a year of inspired leadership. Many of you may think that Fullerton has a relatively young chamber. In reality, we are entering our 120th year. It is an honor to be selected as your chair during this impressive milestone year. It is amazing to see that after all this time our chamber is still fulfilling its original mission of supporting the business community and greater economy of our region. I am excited for this year. I want to take time this year to reflect on the past 120 years of our chamber and what it has meant to Fullerton. I want to reflect on what it is about the Fullerton Chamber that has made it so successful. This chamber was here before the City of Fullerton was and I believe that is

one of the reasons the Fullerton community remains strong. The chamber has been helmed by many amazing leaders from the community. We benefit today from the 120 years of strong foundation laid before us. I want to thank you all for your efforts to make the Fullerton Chamber the business powerhouse it is today. Yet, with every strong foundation comes challenges to how we do business. Daily, in my career in higher education, my colleagues and I face new technologies and rapidly changing expectations from students, parents, and employers. We have to face these challenges head on and address them as opportunities to overcome and become stronger. Likewise, Chambers today are facing evolving demands from the businesses they serve. How do our services match the expectations of our members? How do we find ways to provide more catered services, and fit those deliverables to what businesses are willing to pay? increase our reach to businesses in our community and outside our paid memberships? How do we use that strong foundation provided for us to allow the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce to innovate and grasp on to those opportunities provided to us or create whole new opportunities that have not existed before. And there you have my theme for the year as I serve as chair for the 120th anniversary of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce: Strong Foundation, Innovative Spirit. Where we respect the great work done before us and the foundation it has provided so that we can look for new opportunities and innovations that will allow this chamber to be here in another 120 years.

New Laws: July 1 Although the mid-year minimum wage change grabs all the headlines, employers should take note of other laws effective on July 1, 2014 and be compliant in displaying the current California and Federal Employment Notices. Paid Family Leave Benefits - Under current law, employees may seek wage replacement benefits under the family temporary disability program (also referred to as paid family leave or PFL) for taking time off to care for certain seriously ill family members. Effective July 1, SB 770 expands PFL benefits for employees to include benefits for time taken off to care for a seriously ill grandparent, grandchild, sibling or parent-in-law. PFL does not create the right to a leave of absence, but provides California workers with some financial compensation/wage replacement during a qualifying absence. Background Checks - Effective July 1, AB 218 prohibits a state or local agency from asking an applicant to disclose information regarding a criminal conviction until after the agency determines the applicant meets minimum employment qualifications. There are specified exceptions, such as where a criminal history background check is otherwise required by law for the position. Workers’ Compensation Predesignation of Physician - Workers’ compensation regulations concerning predesignation of personal physicians also are effective July 1. SB 863 made substantive changes with respect to the way that medical treatment is provided and paid for when an employee sustains a work related injury. Work Sharing Plans - The California Employment Development Department (EDD) uses a special work sharing program to help companies avoid mass layoffs by sharing the available work among employees. AB 1392 changes the requirements for those work sharing plans that take effect on or after July 1, 2014. The EDD’s director must still approve plans. Ambassadors...

looking for a few good men & women

Chamber Ambassadors are a special group of members who volunteer their time to help promote the business community and support Chamber functions. They project a positive image for the company they represent as well as for the Chamber. Ambassadors perform a wide variety of duties for the Chamber, but their main function is to help promote the Chamber and its programs, welcome new partners to the Chamber and make Chamber events successful and enjoyable. As the personal representatives of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce, Ambassadors play a vital role making prospective, new and long-time Chamber members feel welcome. Any Chamber member who has been a member for at least 6 months and is in good standing is eligible to apply to the Ambassador Committee. Among other duties, Ambassadors attend monthly Ambassador meetings, serve as a mentors to new Chamber members, welcome and assist guests at Chamber events, and attend ribbon cutting ceremonies.
