through community college in two years—now the average is four years. The same with getting a “four year” education—many students take five or six years to get their degrees. That extra time comes with a cost: more student debt and less economic mobility. At the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD), new leadership has tackled this issue of how to move students faster—from high school, to college, onto degrees, certificates, and jobs. The administrations at the District, Fullerton College, Cypress College, and North Orange Continuing Education are intent on creating new processes and programs that help students with affording college, becoming more directed in their studies, and

GUIDED PATHWAYS Another obstacle students face is selecting a major or deciding on career goals when they enter into college. There are literally hundreds of programs, degrees, and certificates to choose from. Many incoming students have not had sufficient opportunity to identify their strengths and interests, and they are unfamiliar with how different majors connect to possible careers. The need for a college-educated workforce is greater than ever. By 2020 more than 60 percent of U.S. jobs will require postsecondary education. Unfortunately, the cost of higher education is prohibitive for a great many students. In October 2017, the North Orange County Community College District launched the “North Orange Promise,” an innovative program that will increase college accessibility and affordability for incoming freshmen from the Anaheim Union High School District who attend Fullerton College, Cypress College, or North Orange Continuing Education. The North Orange Promise guarantees a tuition-free first year for qualifying students, with the added incentives of free book rentals and priority registration. “We are dedicated to expanding the educational opportunities for our community,” said NOCCCD Chancellor Dr. Cheryl Marshall. “The

NOCCCD recognizes the power of this system of simplification and has begun to redesign its programs and services to improve the student experience along the four guided pathways pillars: 1) create clear curricular pathways to employment and further education, 2) help students get on a path, 3) keep students on a path, and 4) ensure that students are learning along their path. “One of the main cornerstones of Guided Pathways is the creation of Meta Majors,” said Cypress College President Dr. JoAnna Schilling. “These are really areas of interest that a student chooses before declaring a specific major which help them to make informed decisions. Cypress College will be creating these Meta Majors, with the input of students and staff during the 2017-18 year, with the goal of having these in place for students by fall 2019.”

establish our new Center for Academic Internships,” said Fullerton College President Dr. Greg Schulz. “We know there are a great many benefits of internships for students, including: gaining valuable work experience before they graduate, applying knowledge from coursework to on-the-job situations, reality-testing tentative career choices, and meeting and working with professionals to establish contacts for networking. Because Fullerton College is ‘radically student-centered,’ we’re doing everything possible to connect students to eager employers in our area.” As one of the largest and most respected noncredit institutions in the state, North Orange Continuing Education (NOCE) has long been an incubator for local businesses looking for custom certificates or retraining for their employees seeking advancement. “Sometimes the nontraditional choice makes the most sense,” said NOCE Provost Valentina Purtell. “Our school offers the building blocks to create the skills necessary to be marketable for your next career goal.” Popular certificate programs at NOCE include Pharmacy Technician, Electrical Trainee, and Administrative Assistant. At their core, all of these measures are focused on reducing barriers to student success. “Our job is not simply to schedule classes,” said Marshall. “We need to be true partners with our students on their learning journey. The quality of their education is important, but so is the quality of their experience. We want to help reduce the fear factor associated with higher education, and give our students the skills and confidence they need to ensure the growth and well-being

said Virjee. “But, as fulfilling as it was, during my entire legal career I was always on the lookout for a way to pursue my dedication to education and social mobility.” “I was drawn to representing educational institutions because, in so doing, I felt I was pursuing the social good,” he explained. “To be sure, there is nothing wrong with working hard for shareholders and businesses; I understand that. It’s what makes the economy run, and in many ways, creates a rising tide that lifts all boats. But when I worked for education, I went home believing that what I was doing was having a direct and positive impact on society.” Virjee became the first in his family to earn a college degree, double majoring in political science and sociology and graduating summa cum laude from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He went on to earn a Juris Doctor cum laude from the University of California, Hastings College of Law.

This past December, CSU Chancellor Timothy White named him president of California State University, Fullerton effective January 1, 2018. “When I joined the CSU, Chancellor White issued me a challenge to visit all 23 campuses within that first year, and so I did … You walk onto a university campus, and it’s all energy and promise. I’m really excited about that,” said Virjee. “My time at the Chancellor’s Office was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed it, but you don’t get to directly interact with students or faculty too often. Coming to Fullerton is an opportunity to have much greater interaction and, hopefully, a more direct impact.” As he takes the helm of Cal State Fullerton, Virjee says he’s incredibly excited to turn his passion into action, even as he’s aware of the challenges the institution faces — primarily those related to funding. But, he notes, CSUF has “so much momentum.”
“I want to use that momentum. To work together to catapult us,” Virjee said, citing the University’s work in high-impact practices and experiences for students, continued improvement in graduation rates, addressing infrastructure needs, pursuing reaccreditation, and developing its next strategic plan. Virjee noted that the business community may be interested in an economic impact analysis, conducted last year by ICF (an international consulting firm specializing in economic impact studies). That study showed that Cal State Fullerton is a major driver of economic activity statewide, powering $2.26 billion in economic activity, supporting 15,000 jobs, and generating $126 million in local and state tax revenue. The bulk of that impact is felt in Orange and Los Angeles counties. “In addition, Cal State Fullerton returns $13.40 to California’s economy for every dollar invested by the state,” Virjee added. At Virjee’s side throughout his career has been his wife, Julie. They met while both were in college at the University of California, Santa Barbara. “She waited patiently while I finished law school,” joked Virjee. “Jules and I talked it through and made a very specific and informed decision to move to Fullerton and become a part of this wonderful community,” Virjee said. “I get the chance to connect my personal passion for equality, social justice, social mobility, and education with my professional passion for doing those things as part of a greater community. I think that’s going to be very exciting. It’s a new beginning.”
IT’S A NEW BEGINNING.” FRAM VIRJEE, CSUF PRESIDENT

EVERY VOTE COUNTS — INCLUDING YOURS! The June 5, 2018, election is set to become one of historical importance for voters in Orange County. Two long seated members of the House of Representatives -- Ed Royce (R-Fullerton) and Darrell Issa (R-Vista) have made decisions not to seek re-election. This provides opportunities not seen in many years. For the first time in 25 and 17 years respectively the 39th Congressional and 49th Congressional district will not have incumbents on the ballot. This opportunity allows new candidates to come forward and offer fresh ideas to their respective Congressional districts. In 2014, the last primary election that did not feature a presidential race, California posted its lowest voter turnout record since 1918 – just 18 percent. The 2014 election included measures that affected affordable housing and the openness of local government, two issues that we are still addressing today. The 2010 adoption of Proposition 14, the open-primary rule, states that the two candidates with the highest number of votes, regardless of party delegation, move from the primary to the November general election. If California experiences low voter turnout for the June primary election, citizens could arrive to their polling place in November surprised that their party is not represented on the ballot. To help build an informed electorate, the North Orange County Chamber of Commerce (NOCC), in partnership with the U.S. Chamber, hosted a forum in late March for those seeking election representing the 39th Congressional District. This forum featured several candidates and included questions submitted by audience members. In addition to the hotly contested congressional races taking place, for the first time in eight years, incumbent Shawn Nelson has vacated the Fourth District Supervisor seat. This provides a unique opportunity to elect a county representative for the cities of Brea, Fullerton, La Habra, and Placentia, as well as portions of Anaheim and Buena Park. On the same ballot, State Senator Josh Newman (29th District) is facing recall with individuals vying to replace him. Rounding out the ballot are the primary races for U.S. Senator, California Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General Orange County District Attorney, O.C. Sheriff, and more. Furthermore, five statewide ballot measures will undoubtedly affect the way citizens conduct their daily lives. Among those, Proposition 69, if approved, would prohibit funds generated from SB 1, the excise gas tax, to be spent for services other than transportation. Today, citizens often complain of feeling disenfranchised, unconvinced that their vote holds any weight. The June primary allows voters a voice. If turnout continues to trend downward in nonpresidential election years, it is almost certain, however, that a limited number of voters could decide the future for all.

uring my early years as a graphic design student, finding my first internship was a daunting experience. Many questions crowded my mind, but the most prominent
question was, “Am I ready to take the initial step from the world of education to my chosen career?” Fumbling over my words and preparing myself with the best of my abilities, I proceeded into my first interview with the Chamber of Commerce.
NEW BRANDING, NEW OPPORTUNITIES Securing an internship with the Chamber was exciting and challenging. I discovered how graphic design is applied to support a business’s communication needs. I also learned the significance of the Chamber’s service to the business community. The brand transition from Fullerton Chamber of Commerce to North Orange County Chamber of Commerce (NOCC) provided new opportunities to learn. I acquired hands on experience developing and incorporating the new Chamber brand into marketing, advertising, and promotional materials. I worked with our team to redesign the Chamber’s magazine from LiveWorkPlay to PILLAR and expand the organization’s online reach. Recently, I again challenged myself and created the branding for the Chamber’s inaugural SHE Influences Women’s Conference.
RUNNING OVER POTHOLES Driving back and forth from Cal State Fullerton to Downtown Fullerton while balancing other life commitments was not always a smooth road. Typically, an academic internship lasts three months – a very short amount of time to learn about a business, the people, and the organizational culture. The Chamber extended me an opportunity to continue my experience and continue to learn from the NOCC team. Provided the challenge to implement a brand across business materials, I took the opportunity to study and analyze the Chamber’s goals, audience, competition, message, and target markets. “Engaging businesses during Orange County Manufacturing Week brought the world of design and production directly to the students,” explained Theresa Harvey, President and CEO of NOCC. “We are now beginning the process of planning and growing the program for the next two years and beyond. Because not every business can open their doors to students, the Chamber also is working to introduce students to career opportunities via an online platform hosted by Nepris. In partnership with OC Pathways and the Orange County Department of Education, this online community enables teachers to virtually invite professionals into the classroom to link learning objectives to real work application. The Chamber has engaged with a variety of businesses in this venture including Strategy Beach, Crittenton Services for Children and Families and PacMin. Nepris is working to identify additional businesses with which to collaborate in the coming year.
Students embraced opportunities to listen to manufacturing professionals and see first hand the process. Over 100 students explored careers in as part of OC Manufacturing week. .

the Chamber is prioritizing jobs in medical technology and healthcare, hospitality and tourism, advanced manufacturing, and business systems. By connecting with specific programs designed to train employees in these areas, the Chamber has fostered partnerships with NOCCCD which aim to enhance the student experience. Businesses including Fullerton Marriott, Brea Embassy Suites, and Holiday Inn Buena Park are working with students from the Culinary Arts program at Cypress College.
Guest speakers from Care Ambulance, Anaheim Lighthouse, One Legacy, and Crittenton have actively participated with students from Savanna High School in Anaheim, encouraging them to continue their education at Cypress College which has programs focused on healthcare professions. Working together with Community Colleges and OC Department of Education, the Chamber continues to identify ways to enhance opportunities for students. As it is often said, it takes a village.

T
he North Orange County Chamber hosted its inaugural SHE Influences Conference on March 8, 2018. The event, held at the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park, showcased
speakers from some of the region’s most successful and influential women leaders. Among these women were Olivia Duane Adams, Alteryx, Inc., Hazel Curtis, Hazel Curtis & Associates, Dr. Berenecea Eanes, Cal State Fullerton Student Affairs, Jennifer Fitzgerald, City of Fullerton City Council, Carmen Koo, Applied Air Conditioning, Jill Olmstead, MSN, NP-C, FAANP, Nurse Practitioner, St. Jude Heritage Medical Group. The conference included an expo with booths populated by Chamber members and sponsors. Guests enjoyed a pop-up boutique by LuLaRoe Kelly Darrah, an informational booth by Crittenton Services for Children and Families, and delicious cupcakes from Patty’s Cakes and Desserts. Flower arrangements, generously donated by Mums the Word – A Florist, brought cheer to each table. Throughout the course of the conference, topics including business, leadership, personal health awareness, and self-growth were discussed. Dr. Berenecea Eanes shared the “8 Secrets to Success According to Madam C.J. Walker.” Hazel Curtis offered her method of creating a life you love with her acronym C-R-E-A-T-E. Each speaker presented an honest and empowering message. SHE Influences was a huge success thanks to our exceptional speakers and vendors. The Chamber is already anticipating an even more spectacular SHE Influences event for next year.

business.” Our corporate partners like PacMin offer invaluable learning
In 2017, ECS achieved a record number of 70 student projects on display during the ECS Student Projects Showcase and Awards. This year will likely be even bigger with the success of the college’s Corporate Partners program, which connects local industry with students and facilitates industry sponsored student projects. These projects give students the opportunity to work on real life problems facing companies that believe in the power of a student’s fresh perspective. Not only does the company benefit from student ideas, but the students receive critical, hands-on applied learning experience that will benefit them as they enter the workforce after graduation. This year, the college has 16 corporate partners spanning Orange County with four of them based in North Orange County: PacMin, Inc., Disney Parks, Raytheon, and Bristol Industries. The projects are focused on skills that include smart modeling, roller coaster track inspection, navigation tools and robotics. Collectively, our corporate partners are sponsoring 20 different student projects, which will be on display at the ECS Student Projects Showcase and Awards. Dan Ouweleen, President of PacMin, Inc., has said of the program: “PacMin

experiences to our students mentoring them throughout their projects and modeling professionalism and quality work ethic. Susan Barua, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science, has expressed sincere gratitude to the corporate partners who have supported student projects this year. “Without our corporate partners, we would not be able to provide these learning opportunities that enrich our students’ educational experiences.” This year’s ECS Student Projects Showcase and Awards is scheduled for Monday, May 7, 2018. As the event continues to expand with the growth in student population and the Corporate Partners program, the college is offering unique sponsorship opportunities that include logo placements and the option for a company to name one of the awards given to top-notch projects at the event. The College of Engineering and Computer Science welcomes the community to visit campus during this wonderful celebration of students and industry. Businesses interested in attending or sponsoring the ECS Student Projects Showcase and Awards or learning more about becoming a corporate partner, should contact Nicole Bailey at 657-278-4847 or nbailey@fullerton.

Among the many student projects on display was: Micromouse - The Autonomous Maze-Solving Robot. More than 50 projects were presented at the showcase.
“IT IS A WIN-WIN BENEFIT FOR THE STUDENTS AND THE PARTNER, IN THAT THE STUDENTS GET TO WORK ON PRACTICAL ENGINEERING CHALLENGES AND THE CORPORATE PARTNER GETS TO POTENTIALLY IMPLEMENT THESE SOLUTIONS DIRECTLY INTO THEIR BUSINESS.” Dan Ouweleen, President of PacMin, Inc.
ECS students Ashley Matarelli, Alvin Nguyen, Michael Do, Joel Zarate, Christian Aerts and Clayton Nelems presented their project: ROSHA PORTAL - Regionally Optimized Smart Home Architecture at the 2017 ECS Student Showcase and Awards.

My grandfather, who founded this mortuary, died before I was born. If he could come in today and work beside me, he would see tremendous changes. However, I also believe that he would recognize the continuation of the fair and compassionate practices that he established over 100 years ago.

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.
