DEFINING BUSINESS SUCCESS

By Theresa Harvey, President and CEO mall business is the heart of every community. As Chamber President, I have interfaced with a variety of business owners and entrepreneurs. 1) Be Passionate. Starting a business takes time. Many successful business people faced failure before finding success. You need to love what you are doing. Thinking about your business day and night will be difficult to do if you are distracted along the way. Passion will aid in your efforts to be creative and maintain the energy it takes for success.

2) Be innovative. Make sure you are offering fresh products, new services and unique ideas. By continually innovating, you will be able to anticipate the marketplace and adapt to new opportunities. Innovation wins. 3) Take risks. Mark Zuckerberg once said, “The biggest risk is not taking any risk…In a world that’s changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risk.” I add, make sure you carry a parachute. Great risk can also mean great failure. As an entrepreneur, you must be willing to take great risks…financially and personally. Whether that is a financial backer or a person willing to listen, develop your support system. 4) Be a leader. Positioning yourself as a leader does not mean you have all the answers, but establishing yourself as one who is capable of being confident in the decisions you make can help establish your reputation. The relationships you establish help you build loyalty and trust among your employees, your customers and your investors. Your ability to establish yourself as leader gains your company credibility, loyalty and strength. 5) Look for mentors who can guide and assist you as you fulfill your dream. Whether it’s at your local Chamber of Commerce, your SCORE office, the SBDC or a trusted friend, talk with those who can assist you along the way. This issue of Issue we took an opportunity to talk with a number of business leaders to discuss what has made their small business enterprises successful.

NEWS

NOV. 25, 2017 CELEBRATING SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

C

onsumers have many choices, but, the best way to support the local economy is to support small businesses. Spend your money locally with your friends at small businesses

rather than somewhere else. This year, the North Orange County Chamber will continue the national tradition of shopping on Small Business Saturday – the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 25. By encouraging individuals to patronize local businesses and share experiences with us on Instagram and Facebook you can help local businesses grow and keep dollars local in the community. In fact, keeping tax dollars in the community helps fund infrastructure projects and contributes to public safety and schools, which overall strengthens the community. Last year, 95 million Americans shopped on Small Business Saturday–imagine how that impacts our own business community! Tell your friends to do the same, perhaps making a point of organizing a shopping day where you only visit small, local enterprises instead of chain stores. PARTICIPATING IS SIMPLE: 1. Snap a picture while shopping at a locally owned store or restaurant. 2. Post the picture to your Instagram or Facebook account with the hashtag #ShopNOC. 3. Businesses can register online: www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/shop-small We look forward to sharing your stories on our social media. Remember to Shop Small! 6

Fullerton Photographics celebrating their grand opening of Fast Signs with the community. Photos provided by Fullerton Photographics

Fullerton Photographics: We believe in photos! That’s our mission. Our goal is to help you keep them, protect them and share them so that they may live forever. With that in mind, we are constantly innovating. Facebook and the smartphone have completely changed the landscape of the photo industry and how people share and capture images today. PILLAR: Describe changes you have made over the years to remain competitive. FP: We have adopted “change as a way of life” for Fullerton

Photographics. In order to remain relevant we are constantly evolving our products and services to meet the needs of the marketplace. Our business has gone from a single service of processing film to one that includes the production of hundreds of unique photo-products and many photo related services. PILLAR: How has your customer base changed? How have you expanded to new and different markets? FP: As our existing base has aged, we have expanded our services to include many analog to digital conversion opportunities. With the help of our knowledgeable Continues on page 10

staff and the use of new technology, boomers are able to transfer their prior analog life into usable and sharable digital formats. Through social media, we have been able to attract another generation of customers who love tangible photos. We are optimistic that we can grow this market as well. PILLAR: What successful marketing efforts have you applied to brand your company? FP: On a local level, we participate in all forms of marketing including email, direct mail, social media, community events including speaking at local non-profits and other organizations. However, on an international level, the photo industry has their eyes on us. We lead with our innovation of new products and services that on many occasions have become the industry standard. Our most successful marketing campaign called Celebrate, Create, Donate which tied together creative photoproducts, the community

and giving in a state-ofthe-art marketing platform. We were very proud of this effort, which was rewarded with a $25,000 cash prize several years ago. PILLAR: Why did you choose north Orange County to locate your business. FP: I purchased an existing photo company located in this great city of Fullerton in December of 1999. If I were choosing today, I would absolutely locate in Fullerton again. This is an amazing business community and people who live in Fullerton, love to do business in Fullerton. We are grateful everyday that we are here! PILLAR: Tell me about your webbased platforms and how you have used those to grow? FP: In order to survive in the photo space, we had to build a world-class website that would compete with other commercial photo outlets, such as Shutterfly. We feel we have done an outstanding job, with a complete selection of creative photo-products that

can be personalized and ordered directly from us. Our site not only has to be informative, but it has to function well, so the average non-tech user can easily order from it. PILLAR: What is the main quality you look for in your employees? Are you planning to expand your workforce over the next three – five years? FP: We love passionate photo people who are great communicators. As this business evolves and changes we will most certainly grow our workforce. We have recently expanded into another visual communications business with the addition of FASTSIGNS Fullerton. In November of 2016, we added a co-branded FASTSIGNS franchise into our existing Fullerton Photo location. This was a natural fit and has been an absolute win-win for us, especially with the incredible support of our local Fullerton community.

CFO ANDREW CARROLL Andrew Carroll has successfully built a suite of businesses including Accrual Empire, CFOAndrew, and Kingstone Financial. His financial acumen and work ethic has allowed him to establish a stable client base encompassing an array of small businesses. Locating his business in FLDWRK a local co-working space allows him to keep his business fresh and nimble.

PILLAR: What is the mission of your business and how is your passion for innovation represented in your company? Andrew Carroll: I believe that starting and running a business is the best path to wealth. Business doesn’t fit into a box and you have to be flexible to meet the needs of individuals. My goal is make that easier for anyone to do. My businesses work to make lasting and meaningful relationships with our clients.

PILLAR: Describe how your companies remain competitive. AC: Keeping current with today’s technology is mandatory if we are to keep our prices reasonable while remaining efficient. Innovation is represented by versatility. In today’s competitive business environment, a company either moves forward or falls behind. The world of accounting and finance world is beginning to change dramatically. More and more people are being empowered to start and run businesses - and accounting and record keeping is being commoditized. In the investment world consumers are waking up to the fact that many advisors charge very high fees for dubious value. All of this conspires to require anyone in the financial world to rethink business models.

PILLAR: What successful marketing efforts have you applied to brand your company? AC: Keeping an online presence

on social media has been the single greatest marketing tool we have used. Putting real money into hiring the best designers for marketing material and a professional website has been key. Referrals, however, continue to be key to our growth … do good work for clients and they refer us more business.

PILLAR: Why did you choose north Orange County to locate your company? AC: We base out of Fullerton primarily because of the city’s central location. Our staff is located across Southern

California and work remotely most of the time. We use Fullerton as our “home base” because it has easy access to trains and freeways for when we work together.

PILLAR: What is the main quality you look for in your employees? AC: The main quality I look for in an employee is attitude. Technical ability is relatively easy to replicate, but a positive “can do” attitude is the best way to solve the problems that arise in business. I believe that for your business to flourish successfully, you need employees you can count on. I need to know that deadlines can be consistently met and that if any problems arise my team will bring it to my attention. Dependability ensures that each separate gear in my company can run as smoothly as possible. When one gear goes off-kilter, the whole train can crash.

When you come in to see us, you should recognize our beautiful store, we have been in business in Orange County for forty years. Over the years being a personal jeweler, we have made many friends. We represent all facets of the jewelry industry with expert experience. We sell small to large diamonds and gem stones. All repairs and custom work is done on the premises. We buy and sell estate jewelry and we are a second-hand dealer. I am a GIA graduate. Being a personal jeweler carries a lot of responsibility, so being in business for forty years we believe we have shown our customers loyalty and trust.
