provided opportunities for North Orange County Chamber to continue leadership as a regional voice for business. “It has been my pleasure to serve as Chair of the board and to work with an outstanding team representing a broad variety of businesses in the region,” said outgoing Chair, Marty Burbank. “This year the Chamber focused on developing a foundation for the organization’s strategic plan. In doing so, we offered a variety of programming to support efforts in the areas of building cities, inclusion, advocating for a better business community and workforce development.”

of Buena Park, Fullerton and Stanton. This targeted networking opportunity focused on local issues facing business leaders in each of those cities. Leading the discussions were elected representatives including Virginia Vaughn, Mayor, Buena Park; Jennifer Fitzgerald, Councilmember, Fullerton, and Rigoberto A. Ramirez, Mayor Pro Tem, Stanton. Another new program, State of

Jill Olmstead, nurse practitioner St. Jude Heritage Medical Group, shared with attendees at SHE InfluencesTM how her experience and passion helps patients live happier, healthier lives.

The Chamber’s inaugural SHE InfluencesTM – a women’s conference – attracted more than 100 business leaders as they explored challenges, ideas and issues being addressed by the growing segment of women and womenowned businesses.

Continuing its work assisting small business, the Chamber also co-sponsored a small business resource fair hosted by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk Silva. The program included updates on key issues influencing small businesses as well as a panel of entrepreneurs who are using state-sponsored programs to overcome obstacles.

Commerce is, and has been, “On the Move”. In preparation for my tenure as your chair, I attended the Western Association of Chamber of Commerce Executive’s seminar on the ABC’s of a Successful Chamber Leadership. Feeling the weight of responsibility, I listened and took careful notes. I wanted to make sure I did not miss important ideas. As the day progressed, I realized that NOCC has already made many of the right moves and my feeling of anxiety made way for a sense of pride. NOCC’s leadership has put our chamber in a healthy position, poised to fulfill our mission in years to come. That is not to say there are no challenges ahead, but we have

taken giant strides in the right direction. This year, as we study the opportunities for the chamber’s future, I am confident that the organization is a catalyst for change and that we are moving in the right direction. The organization has narrowed its focus, removed activities that are no longer relevant and have modernized ways we conduct business. One of the organization’s biggest challenges this year will be in the spring when we locate to new offices. As a Chamber, we work with businesses throughout the

if we convene business to meet with the leaders of our communities. The Chamber provides that opportunity. I have asked the members of our Board of Directors to lead the way …to serve as examples … as we collectively increase involvement in and support of the Chamber. We are on the move to more effective representation of business for the good of our communities. I look forward to your participation.

later, the aggressive cancer had returned and metastasized. More chemotherapy over the next year at first slowed the cancer’s growth— and then simply stopped working. In the past, the failure of surgery and chemotherapy would signal the end of available treatment options. But after genetically profiling Don’s cancer, David Park, MD, Medical Director of Oncology Services and a board-certified oncologist with St. Jude Heritage Medical Group, offered a new strategy: an experimental immunotherapy, called Keytruda. Keytruda targets activity within a cancer cell, activity which permits the cancer to protect itself from an immune system response. By “uncloaking” the cancer cells, Keytruda allows the immune system’s T-cells to complete their search-and-destroy mission. The FDA had approved it for melanoma and lung cancer at that time, but not for colon cancer. However, Dr. Park believed the early data looked promising for cancers with the same genetic markers as Don’s. He arranged “compassionate access” with the pharmaceutical company, allowing Don to immediately begin receiving the investigational therapy. Don responded to the immunotherapy almost immediately. “For me, it’s been a miracle drug,” says the father of five and grandfather of two. “I feel better than I have in years. I should be the ‘poster child’ for Keytruda.”

doubled last year with many more in the pipeline. “By finding the Achilles’ heel of a tumor, we can maximize the likelihood of success while avoiding therapies that are unlikely to work.” At the Crosson Cancer Institute, state-of-the-art molecular profiling of tumors is now routine for patients with colon, breast, lung, melanoma, head and neck, pancreas and other cancers—as well as for patients who have experienced a recurrence. “Immunotherapies and targeted therapies are moving us much closer to a cure,” says Dr. Park, explaining that clinical trials involving immunotherapies alone, or combined with other treatments, are underway at St. Jude for nearly a dozen different cancers. As the hospital’s board-certified oncologists aggressively pursue new breakthroughs, St. Jude has participated in several national research trials. The Crosson Cancer Institute is a member of Precision Oncology Alliance, working with other nationally-recognized cancer centers to advance tumor profiling and research to better diagnose, treat and bring personalized precision medicine to all cancer patients. Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.
