NOCC INITIATIVE
Seeking New Heights “Seeking New Heights” -- an appropriate theme for the upcoming year for so many reasons,” shared Marty Burbank as he recently prepared for his installation as 2017-18 Chair of the North Orange County Chamber. A pilot and veteran, Burbank has developed a successful legal practice and now has been selected to lead the largest and strongest chamber in the region. The board of directors for NOCC recently adopted a strategic plan that will steer the organization and keep it on course. The plan focuses on four initiatives that will enhance business connections, strengthen regional vitality and provide legislative advocacy.
BUILDING CITIES The Building Cities Initiative works to promote business expansion, attraction and retention to create an economically strong region. Small businesses continue to create new jobs and provide economic strength for the area. The North Orange County Chamber acts as a conduit to promote growth, a catalyst for meaningful connections and a champion for prosperity.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION Diversity and generational shifts create new opportunities for business leaders. The North Orange County Chamber works to promote business and professional development opportunities that reflect the rich diversity of the region. Partnerships with the organizations representing the region’s rich diversity create business relationships that cross ethnic, age and gender boundaries.
IMPACT North Orange County Chamber advocates for the success and prosperity of businesses in the region. We recognize that not one group has all of the answers to fix issues that arise in the business community. Together we can unite our voices to influence decision makers and present solutions and ideas for concerns that arise in the community and throughout the region.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Recognizing that the business community needs a workforce prepared for a 21st century global economy, North Orange County Chamber facilitates and builds relationships between business professionals and educators to develop a highly qualified and well-educated workforce. The Chamber’s Workforce Initiative is collaborating with our business partners in the region on an updated approach to educating and is mounting strategic solutions for developing the next generation of global leaders.

By directly involving industry professionals in the training process, students enter the workforce ready to perform skills demanded by industry. In partnership with educators, the programs’ initial efforts will engage high school and first-year community college students in career awareness activities. new hospital was filled and St. Jude’s reputation quickly grew. Physicians who were part of the medical staff describe applications starting to pour in from the “best and brightest” all over the country— new graduates attracted to St. Jude’s mission of excellence and the opportunity to practice the highest quality medicine. “St. Jude was like a magnet. It started attracting physicians from the nation’s top medical schools and training programs,” explains Joseph Lawton, MD, a retired family medicine physician, who joined the staff in 1960. “What St. Jude offered was unique: a first-class hospital where the values of excellence and compassion

Despite the impressive technology, it was a difference of the heart that truly distinguished the new hospital. The late, William Lenahan, MD, a physician who served on St. Jude’s medical staff for 45 years beginning the day the hospital opened, described the hospital’s unique culture when interviewed several years ago: “The Sisters’ faithful service to others and to God was inspiring to all of us. It created an atmosphere where extraordinary care became not just possible, but expected.” The Sisters could be found on every floor, from Sr. Augustine Balthazor, CSJ, supervising the surgery rooms to Sr. Mary Victor Fox, CSJ, managing the brand

From being named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals in patient experience by Women’s Choice, to U.S. News & World Report recognition in seven specialties, to Magnet-designation (the nation’s top honor for nursing excellence), each new award demonstrates

In the early 1950s, the shortage of medical services in north Orange County was so severe, county health officials called it a “public disgrace.” When local physicians approached the Sisters about building a hospital, the task seemed daunting. Ramiro Fernandez, MD, took on the challenge and his wife suggested the name “St. Jude” – the patron saint of difficult and hopeless causes. Remarkably, the needed $750,000 was raised in just six months, an unprecedented accomplishment.
“For the first several decades, the Sisters provided a daily, living reminder of what it means to care for the “dear neighbor. It is a standard still seen in the life-changing care offered by St. Jude’s physicians and caregivers today,” says Brian Helleland, Chief Executive, St. Jude Medical Center. “What began as a well-loved community hospital in 1957 has grown into one of the country’s

BOOSTING OUR ECONOMY CAL STATE FULLERTON ADDS $2.26 BILLION TO STATE ECONOMY
A
new economic impact analysis shows that Cal State Fullerton is a major driver of economic activity statewide, powering $2.26 billion in economic activity, supporting 15,000 jobs and generating $126 million in local and state tax revenue. The bulk of that impact is felt in Orange and Los Angeles counties. In addition, CSUF returns $13.40 to California’s economy for every dollar invested by the state. Approximately 44 percent of the University’s annual operating budget is allocated by the California State University system as funded each year by the California Legislature and governor. The data also shows that Titan alumni spur an estimated $4.3 billion in annual spending attributable to their CSUF degree, which supports nearly 25,000 jobs and results in an additional $245 million in state and local tax revenue, due to this incremental earning power. The independent analysis was conducted by ICF, an international consulting firm specializing in economic impact studies. As part of the
methodology, the analysis measured: • DIRECT IMPACTS spending by the University on operations, plus spending by students • INDIRECT IMPACTS spending by suppliers that support the University • INDUCED IMPACTS spending of earned wages by University employees in their communities “This study in many respects confirms what we already knew: The impact of Cal State Fullerton is immense and far-reaching. Not only are we shaping tomorrow’s workforce and driving the long-term development of this region and the state as a whole, but our presence as an intellectual and cultural center itself is powering significant economic activity,” said Mildred García, Cal State Fullerton president. “And the ongoing impact of our diverse alumni, whose lives have been transformed by a CSUF degree, is nothing short of amazing.”
