Chair 2014: A Year in Review by Joyce Capelle, Chamber Chair 2013-14

It seems like only yesterday that I was asked to step up unexpectedly into the role of Chair. I entered the year not knowing what to expect and more than a little intimidated by the challenge. Thank you all for your support, kindness, and patience! As my year as chair comes to a close, I wanted to take a few minutes and share my observations. 1. This is a great town! It is both a big city and a small town. It is the best of both. It has many of the amenities and infrastructure you would expect from a city of 130,000, but also the sense of community connectedness normally associated with a much smaller locale.

2. We have a great education system, from pre-school through graduate degrees. You do not need to leave Fullerton to get a world-class education. 3. The chamber provides access to on-line learning and briefings to allow business owners to continue to educate themselves in subjects of interest to them. 4. The chamber's board of directors is committed to keeping the chamber relevant and effective. 5. We come together as a community to address our challenges, advocate for change where needed, and offer help to those less fortunate than ourselves. 6. We have a solid mix of businesses, from start-up companies to large corporations. ...continued on page 6

Member Spotlight...

Businesses doing great things.

by Leah Song, Membership Director

We want to put you in the “Spotlight!” Fullerton Chamber of Commerce knows that our members are doing great things and we want to share their successes! Beginning in July, the Chamber will be highlighting a member each month and sharing details of the unique products, exemplary customer service, new innovations, and community involvement they offer, which enriches our community. The spotlighted businesses will be recognized on the Chamber’s website, promoted on our social media sites, and featured in a press release distributed to local media outlets. We will also be visiting the spotlighted businesses to present a certificate of recognition.

If you know of a business that is doing great things in Fullerton, please submit a brief paragraph stating why we should shine the spotlight on them. Self-nominations are also encouraged. For more information, call me at (714) 871-3100.

New Member Badges Now Available! Say goodbye to sticky-back label name badges! Look like the professional you are! The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce now offers to all Chamber members permanent plastic engraved badges with a magnetized closure for $10. Contact Leah Song at (714) 871-3100, to order yours today!

7. Leadership Fullerton is a great way to learn more about all aspects of the city and graduates of this program can make an impact on the city's future. 8. We actively recruit new businesses, to ensure a stable economic base, to create jobs, and to secure our future. 9. The Chamber's staff is dedicated to helping businesses get the information they need to thrive. They do their very best every day. 10. Lastly, the true leadership of the business community lies with you, the chamber member. While I knew most of these things about Fullerton, I've gotten to know more about individual businesses, how businesses and city management work together, and how economic and legislative issues affect you in much greater depth. It has been my pleasure and privilege to serve as the Chair of the Board of Directors this year. Thank you for the opportunity to serve and thank you for your leadership in this amazing community! 6
