Fullerton Focus November/December 2014

Fullerton Chamber of Commerce proudly partners with American Express, for a third year, to bring Small Business Saturday® to Fullerton on November 29. The program encourages consumers to first think of benefiting their local economy by shopping at local businesses in their community. For more details, see page 5.

Shop Small, Shop Local, Shop Fullerton By Chris Reese, Board Chair, Fullerton Chamber of Commerce

As we begin to wind down 2014 and we find ourselves surrounded by friends and family during numerous joyous occasions that the holiday season brings, it is important to reflect on the blessings we have. When thinking about the economic vitality of Fullerton, I am grateful for the efforts of those who support the Fullerton business community. While the Chamber plays a critical role in the economic vitality of Fullerton’s business community, it does not do so alone; I could go on and on about the many individuals who have contributed a great deal of time and energy to support the Chamber, the sponsors that have provided generously to our Chairman’s Circle this year, the Chamber ambassadors and staff who help organize and promote the Chamber’s many programs, or the more than 600 businesses that are a part of the Chamber, forging an ever-stronger business alliance here in Fullerton.

It is also important to acknowledge that the businesses that call Fullerton home, as well as the buyers who consciously spend their money in Fullerton, drive our local economy through robust sales tax revenue. And with the holiday shopping season upon us, supporting Fullerton’s small businesses by aligning purchases with goods and services sold locally means we all play a role in keeping our local economy churning. Keeping your investment local creates a substantial return for our community. With this in mind, it is no surprise that the Chamber is a willing partner in Small Business Saturday®, a component of the Shop Small® program practiced across the nation that is designed to connect communities with local retail and restaurant establishments. Fullerton, as well as participating businesses and buyers, stand to gain significant benefits through the program. I am grateful for their efforts to strengthen our community’s economy and happy that they directly get something out of it, too. Shop Local ...continued on page 2 FullertonChamber.com

New Employment Laws

New Employment Laws

Shop Local ...continued from page 1 I encourage you to participate in Small Business Saturday® on November 29 and shop right here in Fullerton. Many of the products and services you seek may be offered by local retailers with a personal touch. Making it easier to find a local retailer that can provide what you’re looking for, a list of participating businesses is included in the Small Business Saturday® passport. Details can be found on page 5, or you can contact the Chamber office to learn more as the program is rolled out. One of our community’s best economic development tools lies in your hands when you spend locally. Please visit shops and restaurants throughout the city and use your dollars to wisely keep a portion of your holiday spending local. I hope you will make this a year-round practice as well. Not only are you supporting better city services and helping your local community, but you are also making sure that the businesses you love, continue to operate and thrive right here in town.

It’s time to plan for new employment laws for 2015! To help you remain in compliance, Fullerton Chamber of Commerce will once again have all-in-one employment posters available for member purchase. Don’t overpay for your posters call us at the chamber for information on how to order the latest updates. It’s been a very busy year in Sacramento and Governor Brown has signed into law 930 of the 1,074 bills presented to him this year. Some of the laws, such as mandatory sick leave, made significant changes to existing state law. Other new laws make small changes to different or existing law or may only affect employers in specific industries. These laws, unless otherwise specified, go into effect on January 1, 2015. Below are highlights of some of the laws which may impact your business: Mandatory Sick Leave - This bill will impact all businesses! The Healthy Workplace, Healthy Families Act of 2014 requires employers to provide paid sick leave to any employee who has worked in California for 30 days at an accrual rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked. Employers are able to limit use of paid sick leave to 24 hours or three days in each year of employment and put a maximum cap of total accrual of 48 hours or six days. Effective date for employers to begin providing the sick leave benefit is July 1, 2015. This legislation also requires new poster requirement and penalties for noncompliance. Time Off for Emergency Duty - AB 2536 makes a change to existing law allowing emergency rescue personnel time off to perform emergency duty. It also redefines “emergency rescue personnel” to include an officer, employee or member of a disaster medical response team. The employee is required to notify the employer when he/ she is designated as emergency rescue personnel and also to notify the employer at the time that the employee learns that he/she will be deployed for emergency duty. November/December 2014

New & Renewing Members: September 2014. Protections for Unpaid Interns and Volunteers - AB 1443 provides protection against harassment for unpaid interns and unpaid volunteers. In addition, it protects these same individuals against discrimination and extends religious belief protections and religious accommodations to anyone in an apprentice training program, an unpaid internship or other program to provide unpaid experience in the workplace or industry. Prevailing Wages - A number of bills signed this year relate to prevailing wages. Employers who provide services or construction work on public works projects for the government or public entities must pay the prevailing wage, which is usually significantly higher than minimum wage. Those who engage in construction or public works contracts should consult with their human resources specialist for more information. Service to Minors - AB 1852 requires a business that provides services to minors to provide a written notice to the parent or guardian of the minor receiving those services which addresses the business’s policies relating to employee criminal background checks. This extends to providing extracurricular services including tutoring. There are exemptions for child day care providers and medical facilities/hospitals. Health Care - SB 1034 eliminates confusion for employers by deleting certain provisions of California law related to waiting period limitations for health care coverage and clarifying that employer-imposed waiting periods are governed by the 90-day period authorized under the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Below is depicted the all-in-one poster that includes information on these and other laws. To order posters, call the Chamber at (714) 871-3100.

Studies have shown when people spend at local independent businesses, a return to the local economy is, on average, $45 or more per $100 spent, compared to just $14 or less for $100 spent at a chain outlet. What’s more, through Small Business Saturday® shoppers support stores owned by friends and neighbors – those who put everything into their work, their name on the door, and their heart into their community.

A list of participating Chamber members may be found at FullertonChamber.com. Shoppers can pick up a passport at any one of those locations. Passports completed with stamps from eight different participating locations on that day will be included in a drawing for a chance to win one of 50 or more $25-gift certificates. All shoppers need to do is leave their completed passport with the last participating business they visit.

COMMERCE

Retailers and restaurants will be celebrating in style, too, with many offering extra touches that small, local shops do so well. Passport shoppers, look for perks such as complimentary refreshments or special discounts!

Is Your Event on the Chamber Calendar? By Leah Song, Membership Director

An effective tool for marketing your events is right at your finger tips: The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce online events calendar! Well over 1,000 events are posted to the Chamber’s online calendar each year, making it a favorite one-stop, go-to resource for activities and events happening in and near Fullerton. In addition to the many Chamber events, everything from educational workshops and business seminars to fundraising, social, and cultural events can be found on the calendar. If it’s happening in our community, it can be found on the Chamber’s calendar! On average, there are 112 daily visits to the Chamber’s calendar, with visitors viewing multiple events each visit, totaling 161,000 views each year. With those numbers, news of your event is sure to be discovered, improving brand recognition for your company as well as attendance at your events!

I encourage you to log in to your Chamber account and post your events as often as you have them. The sooner you post details of your event, the more they will be seen. While you’re online updating your events, please take a moment to also update your company profile so that accurate information – regarding your company name, street address, website, and phone number – is available for the comprehensive member directory which will be included in each issue of the Chamber’s new quarterly magazine, FULLERTON live work play, launching January 2015. FULLERTON live work play will be delivered to 10,000 businesses and residents in Fullerton, so this is another excellent marketing tool already included in your Chamber membership. The deadline to update company profile information for inclusion in the first quarterly issue of the magazine is Nov. 15. If you need assistance with logging in to your Chamber account, contact the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce at (714) 871-3100.

Chamber Member Spotlight Not many companies today can boast an 80-year anniversary celebration, but Rite-Loom Flooring, established in 1934, not only survives but thrives. Long-time Fullerton resident and business owner George Lowe saw Rite-Loom as the perfect extension to his interior design business and purchased the company in 2004. Rite-Loom, originally opened with a bustling carpet shop in the heart of Los Angeles, followed by the Anaheim location in 1995. Partner and now president Karyn Hadley joined Lowe to grow the then single product flooring store into a sophisticated design showroom. Voted “Best Showroom in Orange County” by the Orange County Floor Covering Association, Rite-Loom offers a full line of flooring and kitchen and bath products including wood, tile, granite, countertops, cabinets, and window coverings. Lowe has been a major supporter and member of the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce since 1983. He is a Fullerton South Rotarian, serving the community through hands-on projects as well as fundraising and charitable giving. To be considered for the Chamber Member Spotlight, contact the Chamber at (714) 871-3100.
