Fullerton Focus September 2014

The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce recognized its Chairman’s Circle Sponsors during a breakfast event at the Villa Del Sol courtyard in historic downtown Fullerton on August 22. Congressman Ed Royce provided a political update for those in attendance. For a complete list of Chairman’s Circle Sponsors, see page 8.

Creating a Legacy of Strategic Success by Chris Reese, Chair, Fullerton Chamber of Commerce

In the Fullerton community the word “Legacy” can bring up many thoughts of individuals, organizations, and programs that have made a huge difference in the lives of our residents and businesses.

When this question was posed to our Board of Directors the response was clear, we will use the great work done before us to build and grow our Chamber through a five-year strategic plan focused on key measurable goals that this board and future boards can utilize to gauge success.

With that in mind I do not take the mantle of Chair of the Chamber lightly, knowing that I stand on the shoulders of giants. After 120 years of supporting the business community, the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce is the leader in supporting business attraction, retention, and growth in North Orange County.

In the next five years we plan to grow our membership by over 25 percent, grow our sponsorships by 15 percent, increase the return of our publications by 40 percent, increase our event attendance by 50 percent, and provide operational funding for administration of the Chamber’s facilities. These may seem like lofty goals, but we will accomplish these great strides by providing your business with a higher return on your investment in every area of Chamber operations.

With our own legacy of providing top-tier business services and delivering a return on investment well beyond expectations for our members, what more can the current Board of Director do to serve the Chamber?

While this is undoubtedly a lot to ask of our Chamber and its staff, I was impressed by how quickly this aggressive course was adopted by the Board. I have also been impressed with how quickly we have begun the more important process of Strategic Success ...continued on page 2 FullertonChamber.com

Strategic Success ...continued from page 1 operationalizing the five-year strategic plan goals. Although we have many committees focused on these important areas, we can use the expertise that exists in the wider Chamber membership. I invite Chamber members who are interested in helping to affect progress in the Chamber and the community to contact the Chamber office to learn about involvement opportunities. The ability to focus on growth of the Chamber at a time when many businesses are still recovering from the recession goes to show how a strong foundation benefits the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce. This is the legacy of our past board members, our dynamic ambassadors, our industrious staff, and most importantly the businesses that prioritize Chamber membership as a useful investment of their time, talent, and treasure. With a strong and forward-looking business plan in place, the Fullerton Chamber’s Board will continue to uphold the legacy of high quality services, support, and advocacy for businesses in Fullerton and North Orange County.

Im-Ex Bank

Impacting Jobs & U.S. Competitiveness

by Theresa Harvey, President & CEO, Fullerton Chamber of Commerce

The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im) is one of the most import tools at the disposal of U.S. companies to increase exports and create jobs. The benefits of its programs to the U.S. economy are plain: in fiscal year 2012, Ex-Im provided financing or guarantees for about $50 billion in U.S. exports, thereby supporting more than 250,000 American jobs. Ex-Im is especially important to U.S. small- and mediumsized businesses, which account for more than 85 percent of the Ex-Im’s transactions. In addition to these direct beneficiaries, tens of thousands of smaller companies that supply goods and services to large exporters also benefit from Ex-Im’s activities. In the 39th Congressional District, including the City of Fullerton, 30 companies directly depended upon Ex-Im to conduct international business. While some of these companies are multi-national concerns, others are small family-owned businesses. These businesses, however, represent only a small percentage of jobs indirectly created through the supply chains used by our community’s exporters. Far from being a subsidy for corporations, Ex-Im charges fees for its services that have generated billions of dollars in revenue for the U.S. Treasury. In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2012, Ex-Im generated $803.7 million dollars above the cost of its operations and transferred these funds to the U.S. Treasury’s General Fund in October. Fullerton Chamber of Commerce supports the reauthorization of the Ex-Im bank as an economic development tool for our country. It helps promote our stable economy, helps reduce the federal deficit by hundreds of millions of dollars, and creates jobs. September 2014

SoCalGas

Advanced Meters

Customers will soon be able to view their daily gas usage information online as SoCalGas begins installing Advanced Meters. The SoCalGas upgrade to its natural gas metering system involves adding a small batterypowered communication device on existing residential and business customers’ meters throughout Southern California. The new device only turns on for a fraction of a second a day—a total of less than two minutes a year—to securely and safely send natural gas usage data from a customer’s home or business to SoCalGas customer centers. SoCalGas will make the usage information available for the customer to view online the next business day. Looking for ways to better serve our customers, Jeffery Walker, director of the advanced meter project at SoCalGas said advanced meters will help reduce some 140,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year as SCE takes service vehicles off the road every day. The detailed information advanced meters provide will help customers better understand and manage gas use and costs, enabling them to quickly identify and respond to sudden usage spikes and take steps to conserve. Later this year, customers will able to sign-up for weekly alerts and get up-to-date information on usage and billing status via text or email messages. Customers will also enjoy greater privacy and security, no longer having to provide physical access to their property for monthly meter reading. Installations will take about 15 minutes and be completed by SoCalGas energy technicians during business hours. In most cases, customers will not need to be present and natural gas service won’t be interrupted. Natural gas bills will continue to be based on a monthly read of usage. SoCalGas expects the advanced meter system will enable operational and environmental savings over its life—savings that will be passed along to customers in reduced overall rates. In all, SoCalGas is planning to upgrade approximately six million natural gas meters with the new communication device, installing them throughout the SoCalGas service territory through 2017. Customers can also visit SoCalGas’ website, socalgas.com/advanced or call toll-free at (800) 427-2200 for more information. FullertonChamber.com

All Aboard! ...The Ambassador Rally This year the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce took a leadership role among the region’s chambers to host the annual event. “The best part of the day was seeing such camaraderie among members from so many different chambers,” said Fullerton Chamber director of membership and rally coordinator Leah Song. “Our Chamber’s motto was really evident today; working together everyone achieves more.” Sponsored by the Fullerton Chamber of Commerce in partnership with ChamberMaster and UPS, the rally featured keynote speaker Kyle Sexton, the chamber industry’s foremost authority on membership tiers. He is an award-winning marketing strategist and international speaker and author on the topics of membership development, marketing, and innovation. Fullerton Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors volunteer as leaders at the 11th Annual Ambassadors Rally.

More than 120 chamber volunteers from Oceanside to Oxnard convened at the Southern California Ambassador Rally on August 22 at The Hotel Fullerton to share skills and experiences with the purpose of developing and advancing the role ambassadors play within Chambers of Commerce.

“Kyle’s presentation was so spot on for Ambassadors. [The topics] he discussed give me a stronger foundation for how to mentor newer Chamber members, “ said Fullerton Chamber Ambassador chair Ron Kemp. To learn more about the Chamber Ambassador program, contact Leah Song at (714) 871-3100.

Chamber Member Spotlight Bourbon Street, Fullerton’s choice for “California Cajun” cuisine, has made a name for itself among the city’s diners since opening in 2008. A mainstay in the downtown Fullerton’s restaurant scene, owners John Skehan and Larry Houser have ensured that their establishment is not only known for its food and drink, but its commitment to charitable causes as well. Each year, Bourbon Street and its staffers are visible at St. Juliana’s CLIF Brewfest, Fullerton South Rotary’s Fullerton Uncorked, and the WTLC’s Mardi Gras in July. In addition to these well-known annual events, Bourbon Street works closely with the Coast to Coast Foundation, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club of Fullerton, TACA, and Autism Speaks. While Houser, Skehan, and staff are clearly passionate about charity, no cause resonates quite as much as autism, specifically Fullerton Cares Autism Foundation (FCAF). FCAF was founded in 2009 as Houser’s son Boyd was diagnosed with autism; since that time Bourbon Street has been home to multiple fundraising events which benefit FCAF and the Fullerton School District’s special education programs, as well as a “Special Needs Prom” dinner for special education students attending FJUHSD schools. This September, Bourbon Street will sponsor the fourth annual FCAF Comedy Show for Autism, which is held at the Fox Theatre Fullerton. One of FCAF’s main fundraising initiatives, this year’s Comedy Show for Autism is expected to raise nearly $40,000. To learn more about Bourbon Street, visit their website at www.bourbonstreetfullerton.com. To learn more about Fullerton Cares Autism Foundation, visit www.fullertoncares.com. To be considered for the Chamber Member Spotlight, contact the Chamber at (714) 871-3100.
