Brescia - in the footsteps of the past

About 30 kilometers south of Lake Garda lies Brescia, the provincial capital of Lombardy. The city is picturesquely surrounded by a ring of hills, where small villages and stately mansions are located. Although the city has suffered from the Second World War the cultural monuments give a complete testimony of the past 2000 years. A walk through the old town shows ancient monuments, early Christian sacred art, Romanesque and Gothic churches. On the Cidneo hill, in the very heart of the city, is the Visconti castle which reveals a stunning view over the sea of roofs in the old part of town. Renaissance art can be seen in the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, contemporary art in the Museo Ken Damy of photography. And the municipal Museum of Santa Giulia invites to a journey through the cultural history of the region. It is located in the former monastery of San Salvatore - Santa Giulia and is thus itself an outstanding architectural monument (address and opening times on page 25).

Rund 30 Kilometer vom südlichen Gardasee entfernt liegt die lombardische Provinzhauptstadt Brescia, malerisch umrahmt von einem Kranz aus Hügeln, auf denen kleine Dörfchen und prächtige Villen angesiedelt sind. Obwohl die Stadt unter dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gelitten hat, legen ihre Kulturdenkmäler ein nahezu lückenloses Zeugnis der vergangenen 2000 Jahre ab. Ein Gang durch die Altstadt führt vorbei an antiken Bauwerken, frühchristlicher Sakralkunst, romanischen und gotischen Kirchen. Auf dem Cidneo-Hügel inmitten der Stadt thront die Burg der Visconti, die einen traumhaften Blick über das Dächermeer der Altstadt offenbart. Renaissancekunst erwartet einen in der Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, Zeitgenössisches im Museo Ken Damy di Fotografia. Und das städtische Museum Santa Giulia lädt auf eine Zeitreise durch die Kulturgeschichte der Region ein. Es befindet sich in der ehemaligen Klosteranlage San Salvatore – Santa Giulia und ist somit selbst schon ein außergewöhnliches architektonisches Monument (Adresse und Öffnungszeiten auf Seite 25).

Geselliges Beisammensein in Brescia

Ein Sommerabend, Alt und Jung gemeinsam auf der Straße, man sitzt vor den Häusern, redet, lacht, spielt oder geht ein paar Schritte auf und ab. Das ist eines der typischen Bilder von Italien und vielerorts sicher noch Realität. In Brescia allerdings musste erst die Vereinigung BresciaIN diese Stück gute alte Zeit wieder aufleben lassen.

Seit 2003 hat sie es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, bürgernahe Veranstaltungen zu organisieren, um die Menschen wieder auf die Straße zu locken und somit das Gemeinschaftsgefühl in den einzelnen Stadtteilen zu stärken. Dies hat funktioniert und so wird seit einigen Jahren an den Sommerwochenenden zwischen Juni und September überall in der Stadt gemeinsam getafelt. Wöchentlich in anderen Straßenzügen sitzen die Menschen dann an langen Tischreihen, den so genannten „tavolate“, essen, plaudern und genießen den Sommer.

Zu den „tavolate“ ist jeder eingeladen und dementsprechend fallen auch die Preise aus: Ein Grillteller, die so genannte „grigliata“, mit Getränken kostet 7 Euro, sind die Getränke nicht inbegriffen, liegt der Preis bei 6 Euro. Wird ausnahmsweise mal nicht gegrillt und es gibt eine Pasta, bekommt man diese für 3 oder 4 Euro. Die „tavolate“ beginnen in der Regel um 19.30 Uhr. A summer evening in Italy on the streets: old and young all in company, other people talking in front of the houses, laughing, playing, or going for a short walk. That is one of the typical images of Italy and in many places this is still true.

In Brescia the revival of past‘s golden age is due

to the association BresciaIN. Since 2003 its task is to organize popular events in order to bring people back on the streets and to strengthen the sense of community in different city quarters. That worked and so in the last years from June to September people get used, among other things, to having dinner together on summer weekends anywhere in the city. Weekly on other streets people sit at long table rows, the so-called „tavolate”, eating, chatting and enjoying the summer. Everybody is invited to the „tavolate” and therefore prices are cheap: a grill dish, the so-called „grigliata” costs 7 Euro including drinks; if drinks are not included the price is 6 Euro. If exceptionally there is no grill, pasta will be served for 3 or 4 Euro. The „tavolate“ always start at 19.30 o‘clock. Brescia No Limits

Der verrückteste Wettkampf Italiens, ein in seiner Art in Italien einmaliger internationaler „Survival“-Wettkampf, findet am 8. Juli 2012 in Brescia statt. „Brescia No Limits“ ist ein Wettkampf gegen sich selbst; ein Wettkampf gegen die eigenen Grenzen. Die Teilnehmer müssen eine 20 Kilometer lange Strecke mit einer Vielzahl natürlicher und künstlicher Hindernisse zurücklegen und etliche Proben bestehen. Es wird gelaufen, geklettert, gekrochen, gewatet und gepaddelt. Es geht steil bergauf und mindestens ebenso steil bergab. Die Veranstalter haben sich so einiges einfallen lassen, um die Wettkämpfer immer wieder aufs Neue herauszufordern. Fitness und Gewandtheit sind unbedingte Voraussetzung, dann aber ist der Spaß gewiss, und „Brescia No Limits“ wird zu einem unvergesslichen Abenteuer. Gestartet wird bei der Jugendfreizeitstätte in Brescia-Sant‘Eufemia. Von dort führt der Weg raus aus der Stadt und durch die herrliche Natur der Berghänge am Stadtrand Richtung Burg. Von hier geht es durch die Stadt und den Ducos-Park mit seiner üppigen Vegetation wieder zurück nach Sant‘Eufemia. Bei „Brescia No Limits“ kann man in der Gruppe oder auch einzeln antreten. Damit jeder sein kleines Abenteuer findet, wird im Rahmen von „Brescia No Limits“ neben dem „Survival“-Wettkampf auch ein Nichtwettkampf-Lauf für Jedermann veranstaltet. Beide Läufe beginnen um 9.30 Uhr an der Jugendfreizeitstätte in der Via Indipendenza in Brescia-Sant‘Eufemia. Anmeldungen werden bis zum 1. Juli entgegengenommen. On 8 July 2012 the craziest event in Italy, an unique international „survival“ competition, takes place in Brescia. „Brescia No Limits“ is a competition against yourself, a contest against the own limits. The participants have to manage a 20 km route with a variety of natural and artificial barriers and must get over numerous challenges. They will run, climb, crawl, wade and paddle. The route goes steeply uphill and downhill. The organizers have always many ideas to challenge the competitors again and again. Fitness and ability are absolutely essential - but fun is also certain. This makes „Brescia No Limits“ to an unforgettable adventure. The starting point is at the Youth Centre in Brescia-Sant‘Eufemia. From there the route leads out of town, through the natural beauty of the mountain hangs, on the outskirts of the city, towards the castle. From there it passes through the city and the Ducos park, with its lush vegetation, and goes back to Sant‘Eufemia. At „Brescia No Limits“ you can compete in a group or individually. So that everyone can find his little adventure, „Brescia No Limits“ is not just the „survival“ event, it has also a non-competition run for everyone. Both races start at 9.30 o’clock at the Youth Centre in Via Indipendenza in Brescia-Sant‘Eufemia. Registrations are accepted up to 1 July. Veronas berühmter Theatersommer

Im einmaligen Ambiente des Teatro Romano am Fuße des Hügels Colle San Pietro beginnt Ende Juni die 64. Ausgabe von Veronas Theatersommer „Estate Teatrale Veronese“. Zwischen dem 28. Juni und dem 25. August wird dem Publikum auch in diesem Jahr eine bunte Mischung aus Tanz, Jazz und Shakespeare-Theater dargeboten. Los geht es vom 28. bis 30. Juni mit „Verona Jazz“ und jeweils zwei großartigen Konzerten an drei Abenden. Vom 5. Juli bis 4. August stehen dann drei verschiedene Shakespeare-Inszenierungen sowie „Il milione“, ein in Venetien sehr beliebtes ProsaStück über Venedig, auf dem Programm. Getanzt wird zwischen dem 24. Juli und dem 25. August an insgesamt 15 Abenden und zwar zu spanischen und argentinischen Klängen, der Musik von Rota sowie den Klassikern des 19.

Jahrhunderts.

Traditionsgemäß finden auch in diesem Jahr weitere Veranstaltungen im Corte Mercato Vecchio in Veronas Innenstadt statt. Vom 6. bis 31. Juli erwarten das Publikum dort vier Theaterstücke (zwei davon für Kinder) sowie sechs Tanzaufführungen.

In June starts the 64rd saison of Verona’s „Estate Teatrale Veronese”. In the unique atmosphere of the Teatro Romano at the foot of the hill Colle San Pietro will be presented between 28 June and 25 August 2012 a mix of dance, jazz and Shakespeare theatre. The beginning makes „Verona Jazz” with two great concerts at each evening from 28 to 30 June. From 5 July to 4 August are shown three Shakespeare plays and „Il milione”, a theatre play about Venezia.

Dance performances to Spanish and Argentinean sounds, to the music of Rota and the classical pieces of the 19th century you can enjoy from 24 July to 25 August.

According to the tradition, also this year some events are listed in the „Corte Mercato Vecchio” in the very heart of Verona. In this location from 6 to 31 July the audience can watch four theatre plays (two of them for children) and six dance performances.

Garda Jazz das sind jede Menge großartige Konzerte an verschiedenen stimmungsvollen Orten des Garda Trentino, wie zum Beispiel die Burgen von Riva, Arco und Drena, der Kirchhof Area S. Maria in Torbole oder der Park des Hotel Du Lac et Du Park in Riva. Auf dem Programm stehen unter anderem das Quartett Alrededores, Javier Girotto, die Bolton School Bigband, das Ada Montellancio Trio und Livio Minafra. Die Konzerte beginnen immer um 21.30 Uhr. Internationaler Triathlon in Bardolino

Am 2. September 1984 wurde mit dem ersten „Triathlon Internazionale Città di Bardolino” gleichzeitig auch der erste Triathlon Italiens ausgetragen. Am 16. Juni dieses Jahres findet die erfolgreiche Veranstaltung mittlerweile zum 29. Mal in dem lebhaften Städtchen am östlichen Gardasee statt. Der Wettkampf besteht, der olympischen Triathlon-Distanz entsprechend, aus zunächst 1,5 Kilometer Schwimmen, dann 40 Kilometer Radfahren und zuletzt 10 Kilometer Laufen.

International Triathlon in Bardolino

On 2 September 1984 the first „Triathlon Internazionale Città di Bardolino“ has been also the first triathlon competition in Italy. On 16 June will start this year the 29. edition of the successful event in the lively town on the eastern lake. It consists, according to the Olympic triathlon, of swimming 1,5 km, cycling 40 km and running 10 km. In Bardolino 1200 athletes will face this challenge. The start is at 12.30 clock at the Lido Cornicello, the finish is at the Villa Carrara park. The swimming and running competition takes place exclusively in Bardolino; the cycling lap passes through the villages of Calmasino, Cavaion Veronese, Affi, Caprino Veronese, Costermano and Albarè. Valeggio und die Liebesknoten

Handgemachte Tortellini, die so genannten Liebesknoten, sind das kulinarische Aushängeschild von Valeggio sul Mincio, dem 14.000 Einwohner-Ort südlich des Gardasees. Ihre Entstehung sowie der romantische Name sind sagenumwoben: Gegen Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts erzählte man, der Fluss Mincio sei von wunderschönen Nymphen bevölkert, die jedoch mit einem Fluch behaftet seien, der sie außerhalb des Wassers das Aussehen grässlicher Hexen annehmen ließe. Eines Nachts sah ein junger Hauptmann die geheimnisvollen Geschöpfe tanzen. Als er auf sie zuging, blieb eine der Nymphen an Land zurück. Unter dem hässlichen Hexenmantel erkannte er ihre Schönheit und verliebte sich sofort. Die Nymphe musste jedoch vor Sonnenaufgang in den Fluss zurück und gab ihm als Pfand ihrer Liebe ein goldenes Taschentuch mit einem zarten Knoten. Nachdem die Liebe der beiden nicht lange geheim blieb, sah die Nymphe nur eine Chance: Der Hauptmann musste ihr in die Unterwasserwelt folgen. Das tat er ohne zu zögern. Am Ufer hinterließ er das geknotete Taschentuch. Seitdem ist es in Valeggio Brauch, an Festtagen einen dünnen Nudelteig auszurollen, daraus lauter kleine Tortellini zu formen, sie liebevoll „nodi d’amore“ (Liebesknoten) zu nennen und in zerlassener Butter mit Salbeiblättchen zu servieren.

Ihnen zur Ehre wird seit 1993 auf der ViscontiBrücke im malerischen Ortsteil Borghetto jeden dritten Dienstag im Juni das „Festa del nodo d’amore“ gefeiert. Dafür werden an den Tagen vor dem Fest von rund 400 freiwilligen KöchInnen gut 600.000 Liebesknoten hergestellt. 4.000 Menschen bekommen diese dann an zwei Festtafeln von jeweils 600 Metern Länge gemeinsam mit anderen lokalen Leckereien aufgetischt. Dazu werden 3.750 Flaschen Custoza-Weißwein ausgeschenkt, und um Mitternacht wartet ein großes Feuerwerk auf die Festgäste. Das „Festa del nodo d’amore“ findet dieses Jahr am 19. Juni statt. Eine Teilnahme ist nur mit Voranmeldung möglich. Aufgrund seiner großen Beliebtheit ist das Fest in der Regel bereits Wochen im Voraus ausverkauft. Valeggio and the love knots

Handmade tortellini, the so-called love knots, are the most famous culinary specialties of Valeggio sul Mincio, a town situated directly on the river, south of Lake Garda. The creation as well as the romantic name of these kinds of tortellini are surrounded by a legend: in the late 14th century people said, that the river Mincio was populated by beautiful nymphs, which were under a curse. Outside the water they would assume the look of ghastly witches. One night a young captain saw the mysterious creatures dancing on the beach and when he walked up to them they all disappear except one, who remained on the shore. Under the ugly cloak he saw a beautiful nymph and fell immediately in love. But the nymph had to return in the river before sunrise and as a pledge of their love she gave him a golden handkerchief with a delicate knot. Their love did not remain secret for long time and so the nymph saw just one chance to stay with the man: the captain had to follow her into the underwater world. And so he did, without hesitation, leaving on the shore

just the knotted handkerchief. Since then in Valeggio it became a tradition to prepare on feast days a thin dough to form the tortellini, the so-called „nodi d‘amore“ (love knots) and serve them in melted butter and sage leaves.

Since 1993 on the Visconti-bridge in the picturesque village of Borghetto every third Tuesday in June the „Festa del nodo d‘amore“ is celebrated to honor the love-knots. The days before the feast approximately 400 cooks prepare over 600.000 tortellini for about 4.000 people which sit along two 600 meters long tables. But also other local delicacies and 3750 bottles of Custoza white wine are at the guest’s disposal. At midnight a huge firework is waiting for the festival guests. Wenn die Sonne untergeht, geht es in Malcesine erst richtig los. Die Gassen werden mit Fackeln beleuchtet, die Schaufenster stimmungsvoll dekoriert, es ertönt Straßenmusik und über allem thront die in warmes Licht getauchte Skaligerburg. Mit der Initiative „Shopping sotto le stelle“ lädt Malcesine von Juni bis August jeden ersten Samstag im Monat zum MitternachtsShopping ein. Die Geschäfte im Ortszentrum bleiben bis 24.00 Uhr geöffnet, Kleinkünstler geben ihr Können zum Besten, und wer nicht unbedingt shoppen möchte, genießt einfach bei einem Gläschen Wein oder einem leckeren Eis die herrliche Sommerabend-Atmosphäre. Auch Malcesines Burg schließt an den Veranstaltungssamstagen erst um Mitternacht ihre Pforten und kann bis dahin – auf Wunsch auch geführt – besichtigt werden. Die mächtige Skaligerburg ist das Wahrzeichen des Städtchens am nordöstlichen Gardasee. Sie thront über dem mittelalterlichen Ortskern mit kleinen Plätzen, überwölbten Durchgängen, gepflasterten Gässchen und einem Hafen aus dem Bilderbuch. Malcesine ist sicher einer der beliebtesten Ferienorte am See, hat sich aber dennoch eine authentische Atmosphäre bewahrt. Von hier gelangt man mit der Seilbahn zum 1760 Meter hoch gelegenen Tratto Spino-Gipfel des Monte Baldo. Die Bergstation ist idealer Ausgangspunkt für Wanderungen oder MountainbikeTouren und bietet einen unvergleichlichen Blick auf den größten See Italiens.

Franciacorta Natur, Gastronomie und exzellenter Wein

Die Franciacorta, der Landstrich zwischen Brescia und dem Iseosee, ist eine unter landschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten äußerst sehenswerte Gegend und zugleich weit über Italien hinaus für ihren Wein mit Flaschengärung berühmt. Der Franciacorta-Wein war der erste seiner Art in Italien, der mit der „Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG)“ ausgezeichnet wurde, ein Zeichen für seine exzellente Qualität. Die Franciacorta kann erst auf eine 50-jährige Weinbau-Geschichte zurückblicken und ist somit eine noch sehr junge Weinbauregion, die aber stetig wächst und zwar immer in Richtung Spitzenqualität.

DIE GASTRONOMIE: Die Küche der Franciacorta ist eine äußerst angenehme Entdeckung: In diesem Landstrich der großartigen Weine, hat sich eine erstklassige Gastronomie etabliert, eine Mischung aus Tradition und Innovation, die sich mit der leckeren und ursprünglichen Küche der Gegend kreuzt, wie man sie insbesondere in den Trattorien und Agriturismi findet. Typisch für die Franciacorta sind aufgrund ihrer unmittelbaren Nähe zum Iseosee zum einen Fischgerichte und zum anderen Fleischgerichte, die eher aus dem Hinterland stammen. Die zwei traditionellsten Gerichte sind Manzo all’olio di Rovato (Rindfleisch mit Öl aus dem Örtchen Rovato, wo zu Zeiten der Serenissima einer der größten Fleischmärkte Italiens abgehalten wurde) und gefüllte Schleie im Ofen mit Polenta, eine Spezialität aus Clusane, einem kleinen Fischerdörfchen am Iseosee. Exzellente Nischenprodukte auch die regionaltypischen Erzeugnisse. Insbesondere die Käse, wie der Robiola bresciana, die Stracchini, der Pressato, der Salva, der Silter sowie die DOP Käsesorten Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, Provolone Valpadana und Quartirolo Lombardo. Und dann die Finten und kleinen Seefische, der Honig, die Wurst- und Salamisorten (wie die leicht geräucherte Salame di Monte Isola und die Rehsalami Ret). Hervorragend ist auch das Olio extravergine d’oliva del Sebino, das nach strengen Regeln und bisher nur in geringen Mengen produziert wird. Und last but not least die Grappe (aus den besten Trauben der Franciacorta) und das süße handgemachte Gebäck der Pasticcerien.

The two most traditional dishes are the Manzo all’olio di Rovato (beef with oil from the village of Rovato, where at the times of the Serenissima Republic one of the largest meat markets of Italy was held) and filled tench baked in the oven with polenta, a specialty from Clusane, a small fishing village on the Lake Iseo.

Excellent niche products are also the regional cheeses, such as the Robiola bresciana, the Stracchini, the Pressato, the Salva, the Silter and the DOP cheeses Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, Provolone Valpadana, the Quartirolo Lombardo. And then there are also the feints and other small fishes, honey, sausages and salamis (like the Monte Isola salami, lightly smoked and the Ret, a roe salami). The Olio extravergine d’oliva del Sebino is also very good, as it is produced following strict rules and so far only in small quantities. And last but not least the Grappa (from the best Franciacorta grapes) and the sweet handmade pastries of the pasticcerie.

The simplest receipt, that requires good olive oil, is the bruschetta, only bread with oil. The extra virgin olive oil of Lake Garda is one of the best olive oils in Italy. It has a very low acidity, a fresh taste and a high content of chlorophyll, which is responsible for the green color.

Traditionelle Ruderregatta

Die „Regate delle Bisse“, die jedes Jahr in den Sommermonaten am Gardasee ausgetragen werden, sind eine Serie traditioneller Ruderregatten venezianischer Art. Sie haben ihren Ursprung in der Zeit zwischen 1405 und 1797, als der Gardasee zur Republik Venedig gehörte.

Mit dem Ende der Herrschaft Venedigs schlief die Tradition am Gardasee dann vorerst ein, wurde jedoch zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wiederentdeckt. Richtig aufleben konnte die traditionelle Regatta aber erst 1967. Ein Jahr später wurde der Verein „Lega delle Bisse del Garda“ gegründet, der seitdem jedes Jahr eine Bisse-Regatta-Serie organisiert. Die Bisse-Boote sind auch heute noch den damaligen venezianischen Ruderbooten nachempfunden. Sie sind 10 Meter lang, 65 Zentimeter breit, extrem flach und wiegen rund 110 Kilo. Sie werden von vier Mann mit je einem Ruder im Stehen gerudert. Dabei machen die Boote eine Zick-Zack-Bewegung, die an eine Schlange erinnert. Dieser haben sie auch ihren Namen zu verdanken: Natter heißt auf Italienisch „biscia“; im lokalen Dialekt „bisse“.

Die Regatten finden überwiegend gegen 21.00 Uhr statt. Eine Stunde zuvor marschieren die Mannschaften mit einer kleinen Zeremonie auf. Die erste Regatta der Serie wird dieses Jahr am 16.

The „Regata delle bisse“, which is held on Lake Garda every year during the summer months, is a traditional Venetian rowing regatta. Its origin dates back to the period 1405-1797, when the lake was part of the Republic of Venice.

With the end of the domination of Venice this tradition stopped at Lake Garda and was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th Century. But it was

only in 1967 that the traditional regatta comes to a renewed interest. One year later the club „Lega delle bisse del Garda“ was founded and since then every year it organizes a boat race.

The „bisse“ boats are still modeled like the former Venetian rowing boats. They are 10 meters long, 65 centimeters wide, extremely flat and have a weight of 110 kilograms. They are rowed by four standing men, each with one oar. The boats make a zig-zag motion that resembles the movement of a snake. That is why the boats are called „bisse”: snake is called in Italian also „biscia“; in the local dialect „bisse“.

Most of the regattas are held at 21.00 o‘clock.

An hour before the teams march on with a small ceremony. The first regatta is held this year on 16 June in Sirmione, on 23 June will be rowed in Rivoltella del Garda (already at 18.00 o‘clock) and on 30 June in Desenzano del Garda. In July the races are organized in the following lake towns: Garda (July 7), Gargnano (July 14, already at 18.00 o‘clock), Gardone Riviera (July 21) and Peschiera del Garda (July 28, already at 18.00 o‘clock). Sechs Tage im Zeichen der Tradition

Nicht weit vom nördlichen Gardasee entfernt liegt Trient, eine oft verkannte Schönheit.

In ihrem Stadtbild zeigt sich die Provinzhauptstadt des Trentino als eine Mischung aus italienischer und österreichischer Kultur. Prächtige Bauwerke und bezaubernde Fresken erinnern an die große Vergangenheit der Stadt, die nicht nur architektonisch ein Ort der Widersprüche und Verschmelzungen ist. Hier treffen auch im Landschaftsbild der schroffe Norden und der sanfte, sonnige Süden aufeinander.

Mit den „Feste Vigiliane“ lädt Trient vom 21. bis 26. Juni 2012 zu einer fröhlich-unterhaltsamen Begegnung mit seiner Geschichte ein. Sechs Tage lang stehen Musik, Schauspiel, Ausstellungen, Umzüge und natürlich auch Kulinarisches auf dem Programm. Eröffnet werden die Feierlichkeiten am Donnerstag mit einem großen Um-

zug, an dessen Ende die Fest-Fahne gehisst wird, begleitet vom Geläut der „Renga“, der historischen Glocke des Stadtturms Torre Civica. Am Freitag findet dann unter anderem ein eindrucksvoller Umzug in traditionellen Kostümen statt.

Am nächsten Tag öffnen die gastronomischen Stände, und bei der „Magica Notte“ wird bis in die späte Nacht hinein gefeiert, mit Musik für jeden Geschmack. Sonntags wird auf der Etsch der so genannte„ Palio dell’Oca“ veranstaltet, ein traditioneller Floß-Wettkampf, der 1983 wieder ins Leben gerufen wurde. Am Montag steht die 14. Ausgabe des Festival Acustico auf dem Programm und am letzten Tag findet neben dem traditionsreichen Wettbewerb „Ciusi e Gobj“ ein großes Abschlussfeuerwerk statt. Not far from the northern part of Lake Garda lies the city of Trento with its often unappreciated beauty. The provincial capital of Trentino shows in its townscape a mix of Italian and Austrian culture. Magnificent buildings and enchanting frescoes are reminiscent of the glorious past of the city, which is not only from an architectural point of view a place of contradictions and fusions. Also the landscape shows the contrast between the rugged north and the gentle, sunny south.

The festival „Feste Vigiliane“ invites all from 21 to 26 June 2012 to a happy and entertaining encounter with Trento’s history. Six days are dedicated to music, theater, exhibitions, parades and gastronomy. The festival opens on Thursday with a big parade where a festival flag will be hoisted at the end of it. The hoisting is accompanied by the ringing of the „Renga“, the historic bell tower of Torre Civica. Also, on Friday an impressive parade in traditional costumes will take place.

On the next day open the gastronomic stalls and the „Notte Magica“ festival is celebrated into the wee hours with music for every taste. The „Palio dell‘Oca”, a traditional raft race relaunched

Auch in diesem Jahr wird Riva del Garda wieder zum Zielort des packenden Mountainbike-Rennens „Craft Bike Transalp“. In den vergangenen 14 Jahren wurde es zum bekanntesten und bedeutendsten Mountainbike-Event der Welt, zur Mutter aller Etappenrennen. Über acht Etappen von insgesamt 670,25 Kilometer und 21.504 Höhenmetern geht es auf einer landschaftlich sensationellen Strecke mit atemberaubenden Pässen über Schotter, Trails und Radwege nach Riva del Garda. Gestartet wird dieses Jahr am 14.

Juli und zwar erstmals in Oberammergau. Von dort geht es dann wie gewohnt über Imst nach Ischgl zum nächsten Etappenort Nauders. Anschließend verlassen die Transalp-Biker Österreich und fahren nach Scuol, im Engadin in der Schweiz. Dann wird italienischer Boden erreicht und es geht über Livigno und Ponte di Legno nach Madonna di Campiglio. Die letzte Etappe führt dann am 21. Juli - wie längst zur Tradition geworden - nach Riva del Garda. Hier warten beim großen Finale kollektive Glücksgefühle, Schampus und die begehrten Finisher-Trikots auf diejenigen, die alle Etappen beendet haben. Gefahren wird übrigens im Zweier-Team, und nur wer es gemeinsam mit seinem Partner nach Riva schafft, erhält am Ende auch das Finisher-Trikot. Der Gardasee ist der größte See Italiens, der größte der Oberitalienischen Seen. Der Gardasee wurde durch den Etschgletscher in der vergangenen Eiszeit geformt, dessen Spuren man noch heute verfolgen kann. Zwischen den Alpen und der Poebene liegt der Gardasee im Norden in der Region Trentino-Südtirol, im Westen in der Lombardei, im Osten in Venetien.

Damit teilen sich die drei Provinzen Trento (Norden), Verona (Osten) und Brescia (Westen) die Verwaltung. Während das nördliche Ufer des Sees von Zweitausendern der Gardaseeberge wie z. B. dem Monte Baldo umsäumt ist, liegt das südliche Ufer bereits in der Ebene. Das Klima ist aufgrund der Lage sub-mediterran mit heißen Sommern und niederschlagsarmen, milden Wintern. Die Jahresdurchschnittstemperatur liegt zwischen 13 und 15° C. Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last ice age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (southeast), Brescia (southwest), and Trento (north). Being easily accessible from the north via the Brenner Pass, the lake is a major tourist destination, including a number of exclusive hotels and resorts along its shore. The northern part of the lake is narrower, surrounded by mountains, the majority of which belong to the Mount Baldo chain. The shape is typical of a moraine valley, probably having been formed under the action of a Palaeolithic glacier. The climate is sub-Mediterranean with hot summers and low rainfall, mild winters. The annual average temperature is 13-15° C.
