It is always an uplifting feeling to report on the many positives from within our industry and in this issue we hear from a number of businesses which are in rude health – expanding their activities, moving forwards, generally being progressive and showing good figures. But will the next year or two continue in this vein as the bite of the material supply crisis begin to be felt more keenly?

As a manufacturing industry, the furniture and joinery sector is naturally heavily reliant on raw and processed materials. For quite some time now, there have been widely-reported and significant issues with material shortages leading to delayed and deferred manufacturing programmes, higher prices and even order cancellations. The situation is also now being exacerbated by a chronic lack of trained HGV drivers and logistics people in general. These shortages are all the more infuriating because they are happening at a time when many firms are reporting unprecedented demand – which some businesses will now sadly not be able to meet. Of course it’s easy to level the blame at suppliers, but they too are battling supply issues of their own. I am sure many will be aware of the efforts, research and advice provided by numerous agencies which predict that, in time, this situation will ease – but perhaps not after things become more challenging still in Q3 this year, when conditions are predicted to calm down to a more reasonable level. But a sting in the tail could well be that prices for raw materials could remain higher than they were 12-18 months ago, even after the crisis abates. Looking forward, the much anticipated W Exhibition & Elements show is fast approaching and in full developmental flow, despite a couple of cancellations. The organiser reports there has been a steady stream of new exhibitors applying to fill those slots with ‘strong interest’ from a number of new exhibitors which will add fresh faces and brands to the event. Of the readership I’ve been speaking with in recent months, the overwhelming majority say they’re very much looking forward to attending the W Exhibition & Elements. After all, we need hands-on interaction with our colleagues and partners under one roof, all conducted in a safe and professional manner of course. I believe the chance to meet up and re-engage with well-known brands and suppliers alongside a dynamic cohort of new exhibitors 8 News is just what visitors are looking for in a fast-moving market 16 Installations where I firmly believe they will be comparing and contrasting their forward investment options moving forwards. 24 Robotics & Automation

Survey says UK REACH is threat to UK manufacturing The latest survey of British Coatings Federation (BCF) members reveals that UK coatings manufacturers are increasingly concerned about the effects of the new UK chemical regulations. Almost 80% of respondents believe UK REACH will impact negatively on their businesses, with the fear that there will be a significant reduction in the portfolio of available chemical substances in the UK compared to the EU, and 67% of respondents fear higher costs in the future as suppliers pass on the costs of complying with UK REACH.

Weinig UK declares first Connect event a success Weinig UK’s new hybrid in-house event series kicked off in July with The Potential of Powermat. The three-day, Covid-secure event, which took place at Weinig UK’s state-of-the-art showroom in Abingdon, offered new and existing customers an opportunity to see a wide range of moulders being demonstrated, and experience the latest technology first hand. Upon attending the event, a representative from Carr Portable Buildings said: “We’ve truly valued the opportunity to have one-onone time with Weinig’s specialists. We were able to see a range of different models up close, giving us a better understanding of the technology available to us, and we had demonstrators to showcase the running of the machines, the tooling and special features. It was certainly time well spent, and it was great to be able to see so many fully accessible machines under one roof. We really had Weinig’s dream team looking after us.” Malcolm Cuthbertson, MD of
Weinig UK, adds: “Weinig UK’s first Connect event has proven to be a great success, with many businesses – some new to Weinig – attending the event. Many visitors came for a specific purpose, some to explore the Powermat range for the first time and others to add to their existing fleet. “Each visit was tailored to suit the company’s needs, and each demonstration was carried out to specifically highlight the purpose of the visit. Feedback suggests this tailored approach really has added
true value to our Connect series, and we’ve really enjoyed connecting with industry once again. “We’re now looking ahead to our second event, Laser vs Glue, in September, where visitors can explore our Holz-Her edgebander range and our unique Glu Jet system with our experts.” Weinig UK will hold its second in-house event, Laser vs Glue, from 14-16th September 2021. Combilift’s 60,000th truck delivered Irish manufacturer Combilift recently marked a further milestone when its 60,000th unit came off the production lines at the company’s HQ in Monaghan and was shipped to the other side of the world. The customer taking delivery of this special forklift is Metroll, a leading Australian manufacturer and supplier of steel building products including roofing, cladding, rainwater, structural and fencing. Metroll has branches across the country, and the new Combi-CB3000 will be a further addition to its fleet of 13 Combilifts that are operating throughout the Metroll Group, with another 10 already on order. These range from 3t multidirectional units to a customised 10t model. Combilift number 60,000 will be working at the site in Toowoomba and has been fitted with features such as a 4.9m triplex mast with a 3050mm spreader to safely and easily manage the long loads that are typically handled by Metroll. According to Metroll’s operations manager Vic Josephs: “Like most businesses we are very busy and we’re also growing at a significant rate, so space has become a premium resource. With
this unit we can utilise our space more efficiently whilst at the same time operating safely. Safety is of paramount importance. This forklift allows our machinery to get into tighter spaces and for us to space our racks more closely together to maximise factory floor space.” Combilift CEO and co-founder Martin McVicar comments: “This is a great achievement for Combilift, particularly as almost every truck we manufacture is a one-off, designed for specific and individual requirements. There are very few other companies, if any, that can offer this level of customisation whilst manufacturing in such volume. “The first half of this year has been by far the best in our 23-year history for the number of orders we have received – not just for Combi-CB models but across our complete product range.” Chris Littlewood, country manager of Combilift Australia, says: “The Combi-CB 3t model is the most popular unit in the Australian market and accounted for 50% of the machines we sold in the year ending March 2021. So, we are particularly pleased that it is one of our customers in this country that has been able to
receive this landmark machine.” Following the successful collaboration with Metroll in Australia, Combilift now also supplies its trucks to the company’s California-based operations, too. “We have often found that a recommendation from one country leads to sites elsewhere adopting the same materialhandling processes with our products,” says Martin McVicar. “So we’d like to congratulate Metroll on taking delivery of our 60,000th truck, and thank them for their continued support over the years.” www.combilift.com/60000

Blum records €2.37b turnover YE June 2021 The family-owned business, based in Hoechst, Austria, has posted €2,376.75m in group turnover for the 2020/21 financial year (ended 30th June 2021), representing a growth in turnover of €470m (+24.7%) on the previous year. The fittings specialist was able to achieve these positive results thanks to strong demand for topquality kitchens and furniture from consumers wanting to spruce up their homes. However, shortages in raw materials, especially in steel, have put severe pressure on supply chains. The unforeseeable surge in demand for furniture caused by the pandemic has led to an above-average increase in turnover for the fittings manufacturer from Vorarlberg. “The crisis has prompted people all over the world to attach more importance to their homes. At the same time there has been a shift in private consumption – away from traditional leisure time activities to investments in home improvements, for example in kitchens and furniture,” says Philipp Blum, MD of Blum, explaining the development. Development of international markets Although furniture stores had to close their doors for long periods of time during the lockdowns, the demand for furniture and interior refurbishments increased dramatically all over the world. Western Europe recorded strong growth, particularly in Italy, France, the UK and Germany. Major increases were also posted in Eastern Europe, for example in Poland, Russia, the Czech Republic and Turkey. Business also went well in North America. Sales figures also rose in Asia and Oceania, with China again contributing significantly to the business’ results. Furthermore, last year proved a positive one for Blum in Africa, South America and the Near and Middle East. The fittings specialist delivers to customers in more than 120 countries. With the foundation of Blum Indonesia in this spring, the company has 33 subsidiaries and representative offices worldwide. Philipp is convinced that the company’s international orientation and policy of having local

organisations and sales teams on site close to customers was very important during the pandemic. The distribution of Blum’s turnover by region remained the same as in the previous year. “We still achieve most of our turnover, that is to say 44%, in our domestic market, the EU,” comments Philipp. With a share of 13%, the US is the company’s largest single market – other markets worldwide account for 43% of total turnover.
Martin Blum
Blum continues to attach great importance to its apprenticeship programme (training young people to become specialists). The goal is to counteract the shortage of skilled professionals and be well equipped for the future. A total of 93 new apprentices will start their vocational training with Blum in Vorarlberg on 1st September, eight new trainees will join Blum USA, and two Blum Poland.
Plant 2 in Hoechst, head office of the Blum Group
Employees are key success factor “We’re delighted with the demand for kitchens, furniture and, consequently, Blum products, but it poses extreme challenges, especially in the field of production,” points out MD Martin Blum. The reliable and timely supply of its products to customers is a top priority for the long-established company from Vorarlberg. “We owe our thanks to our employees. It’s thanks to their commitment and flexibility that we’ve been able to deal with this extraordinary year,” underlines Martin. At year-end, Blum employed 8778 people worldwide, 6551 of which were based in Vorarlberg. 371 new employees were recruited in Vorarlberg last year, and 429 worldwide.
The impact of strong demand The high market demand in the kitchen and furniture industry, as well as in other industries, has led to shortages in raw materials such as steel. “Unfortunately, our customers are currently also having to wait longer for our products,” points out Martin. “Only by adjusting some delivery times have we been able to meet the rapid growth in market demand,” he adds. “The price of steel has almost doubled, while plastic, packaging, zinc and aluminium have also been subject to enormous price hikes. We see a similar situation in the field of transportation. The whole international supply chain is under pressure. In some cases, overland and ocean freight costs have increased dramatically.
Innovations safeguard the future Despite the turbulence of the last financial year, Blum is firmly convinced that continuous innovation in products and services will safeguard its future. The family-owned business used digital technologies to stage Blum CONNECTS, a hybrid event to mark interzum. The manufacturer presented its innovations to customers all over the world using a combination of local events held at market organisations and virtual experiences. The first customers are now using Revego, a pocket system for closing off areas with large doors. It offers individualised design solutions for small and large spaces. Minimalist design can also be implemented with ease with Aventos HKi, a fitting that is hardly visible, even when the wall cabinet is open. Furthermore, Blum has also responded to the trend towards dark and metallic surface finishes. “We want to enable our customers’ design ideas and help them meet the demand for more individuality in kitchens and furniture by providing suitable fittings solutions,” reports Philipp. Looking ahead The managing directors believe that international supply chains and the supply of raw materials will remain severely impacted for some time. “We hope that the high vaccination rate will avert the need for further lockdowns,” says Philipp. How long the home improvement trend and shift in private consumption will last is not clear. But one thing is certain for Philipp: “We’ve benefited from the experiences that we as a company have gained over the last one-anda-half years. Digital technologies offer many opportunities, but they’ve also shown us that you cannot replace face-to-face conversations and an exchange of ideas.” For the company as a whole, it is crucial to remain a trusted partner to its customers worldwide. www.blum.com

Installations Duncan Reeds continues to opt for Homag quality and service One of the UK’s leading fabricators of bespoke laminated products, Duncan Reeds, has selected Homag once again as its preferred supplier of a new range of wood processing machinery. The family business was established in 1989 and has since grown into a dynamic operation. It has two production facilities located in West Sussex and Manchester, with production and storage space of just over 70,000ft2. As part of expansion plans, the company is about to open a third production facility in Kidderminster. Duncan Reeds produces a vast array of custom-made products for a diverse variety of businesses in the UK and overseas. Among other products, it is currently manufacturing tabletops, toilet and washroom cubicles, wall liners and protective hygiene screens for safeguarding people during the Covid-19 pandemic. Before investing in the new range of machinery,
Homag invited Duncan Reeds’ company directors to visit its headquarters in Germany to see the machines in operation. During their visit, the Homag sales team helped the directors to select the most appropriate machinery for their specific requirements and budget. Commenting on the Homag investment, director Dean Harkess-Cowlyn says: “Investing in our plant is a vital part of our success. Our commitment to Homag ensures that we have the most up-to-date, leading-edge machinery to service the diverse requirements and demands of our customers. This helps us to maintain our position as one of Europe’s leading decorative panel suppliers, with the capacity to deliver superior-quality products and services. “Quality and service are essential to our success – consequently, these two attributes are the most important factors we look for in our machinery suppliers.”
Ongoing investment in Homag Machinery Remarking on the company’s continual investment in Homag equipment, Dean went on to say: “We first invested in Homag machinery in 2002, when we bought a top-end Brandt edgebander. Since then we have added over 20 more Homag machines including saws, CNC processing centres, throughfeed post formers and PU edgebanders. “Our continuous investment in the most advanced and state-of-the-art manufacturing machinery demonstrates our level of commitment to both our customers and employees. It allows us to offer the highestquality product at the most competitive rates. “For us, the reliability of the Homag machinery is due to its world-class German engineering. Along with their productivity features, we have found the impressive array of safety features on their machinery has continually improved.
INSTALLATIONS 17
We now get fewer breakdowns, and the risk of accidents is minimal. What’s more, we have extended capacity to produce a very wide range of products more efficiently. “Our most recent Homag equipment investments were for our head office in Billingshurst, West Sussex. These comprised of two Homag CNC processing centres – a fouraxis CENTATEQ P-110 and a CENTATEQ E-310. The latter machine was purchased to replace an old Homag BAZ 322, which was commissioned back in 2008. “With its airTec, zero-joint technology edgebanding unit, the CENTATEQ E-310 enables us to manufacture ABS-edged shaped panels seamlessly, with ease and efficiency. This helps to keep us at the forefront of modern panelprocessing supply. “Homag machinery gives us the ability to efficiently manufacture a diverse range of products using an extensive array of materials. This investment has facilitated YoY growth for the business, even in the middle of a global pandemic. “Finally, we are delighted to say that our third factory will be opening in Kidderminster in the third quarter of this year. This facility will be equipped with five new Homag machines, which total nearly half a million pounds of investment,” concludes Dean. For more information on Homag’s machinery or software, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

Cutting in Covid The last 18 months have been a roller coaster for many businesses, with the industry having to adapt quickly during a time of economic uncertainty. For many, this has resulted in temporary or even permanent business closures but for TBS Poly, it’s been its busiest on record, as it’s continued to supply and fabricate plastic sheet materials to hospitals, prisons, large merchants and contractors throughout the pandemic. It’s this demand that has resulted in the family-run business investing in four new machines, including a new Striebig Control vertical panel saw from Leicester-based TM Machinery.
“Our previous Striebig vertical panel saw was 15 years old and, pre-Covid, it was running up to 12 hours a day, five days a week,” explains William Gresswell, Business Development at TBS Poly. “It’s safe to say it was the most-used piece of kit in our workshop, cutting on average three tonnes of sheet material each day – including Polycarbonate, Acrylic and Trespa, PTG, PVC, GLP, aluminium composite and laminate board – and up to 20 sheets at a time.” But, when the country went into its first lockdown in March 2020, business was impacted immediately. “As our competitors shut down and the threat of material shortages turned into a
reality, we decided to buy as much stock as we possibly could from our suppliers and stockists and ended up importing a continuous stream of material from over five countries,” reflects William. “I’m sure people thought we were mad but our gamble paid off. Demands meant that we were processing sheet material faster than we were able to offload it from our lorries. Demand for plastic safety panels, segregation screens and dividers skyrocketed. We went from cutting three tonnes of plastic sheet material a day to over 10 tonnes a day, 7 days a week on one 15-year old Striebig and it never let us down once. We were working it around the clock, only stopping for material change overs, and breaking material output records in the process. It was a true workhorse and it did us proud but it also made us reassess our business model.” Whilst William admits orders for cut-to-size sheet materials have started to ease since the beginning of lockdown (but still remain considerably higher than previous years) ongoing plans to expand the company’s Hertfordshire-based facilities in order for it to hold up to three month’s-worth of sheet material at one time and house three newly-purchased three-axis CNC machines, are well underway and the need to invest in new technology is more necessary than ever. William says, “Covid taught us vividly that with demand, comes supply. We needed a saw that could increase our throughput, streamline our
19
production and be more efficient in terms of material yield. We simply didn’t have the room to buy a second saw but we were in a position to upgrade to a newer, automated model. We didn’t need to look around. We’ve had a good relationship with TM Machinery for over 20 years – they service our machines every year and we trust them. We also know what we’re getting with a Striebig vertical panel saw: a robust machine that offers pin-point accuracy, guaranteed.” The automated Striebig Control offered TBS Poly the perfect solution and, with no delays in shipments during the pandemic, TM Machinery were able to dismantle the old saw and install the new one in just eight weeks. Thanks to its wealth of automated features – including fully automated cut cycle, automatic beam and saw head positioning for horizontal cuts and a new 12” touch screen computer, it has made TBS Poly’s cutting operation around 25% faster. “As well as its handy standard features, like its laser indicator for horizontal cuts and digital measuring system, we also opted for automatic length stops (Electronic Positioning System). These really are worth the extra cost,” says William. “Once you’ve programmed the size of the panel, the stops automatically move into position. There’s no manual adjustment needed. It also lets you know if the stop has been
knocked at any time during the handling process, saving you valuable time and material waste if something were to move accidently. Strip cuts have also been made easier and faster because of the strip cutting gauge and, with the saw’s computer able to save jobs and common cut sizes, repeating regular work has become much simpler, reducing set-up times by approximately 35%. The new Control also works efficiently with our Maxcut V2 cutting programme, which creates cutting lists designed around our stock sheets and off-cuts.” William adds, “The new Control has definitely lived up to expectations and offers precise, accurate cuts. Features aside, confidence in the machine and its after-sales team always has a huge part to play in any purchase we make – it’s a big intangible benefit and one that we cannot afford to overlook. We have every confidence in our saw’s capabilities and that reflects in our level of customer service. Going forward, we want to be known as the go-to supplier of polycarbonates in the UK, increasing our stock levels and variety of polycarbonate that can be cut, shaped, edged and drilled before being shipped direct to manufactures and end-users. This will only be achievable with the best machinery in place and this is exactly why we’re continuing to invest in Striebig.” www.tmmachinery.co.uk

Multiple Salvador crosscuts for DWB DWB Timber Engineering is a national group with facilities across the UK, including designated design and fabrication plants. Founded in 1986, the company has built an enviable reputation for high-quality roof trusses. F&JP visited Phil Daniels and his team in East Yorkshire, a year on from investing in a Salvador SuperPush 200 automatic crosscut saw from sole UK supplier Daltons Wadkin … Many businesses in the construction and industrial sectors have adapted to keep up with the unprecedented demand brought on by the pandemic. Timber Trade Federation UK reported a 13-year high for timber imports in November 2020, reaching a volume of 1.08 million m3. DWB had already highlighted the need to replace slow and aged machinery with a cutting-edge ‘smart’ machine to streamline its production, and machinery expert Daltons Wadkin was able to offer Covid-safe demonstrations and advice. Speed, accuracy, safety, and saving waste were top of the list when looking for a new saw. Luke Laybourne, seasoned crosscut operator of 17 years at DWB, explains that the old saw was just too slow: “David Bell and Phil Daniels went down to an existing Salvador customer, and they said straight away, ‘that’s the saw for us’.” Speed and accuracy of the Salvador SuperPush 200 is ensured with a heavy-duty infeed table, angled at 30° to keep the working material continually squared against the rear fence. The high-speed pusher can operate at up to 60m/min and can be regulated within each cutting list.
21
Luke enthuses: “Where a job used to take four days, we can do it in two. I’d say we’re cutting over +100% more.” The entire saw and pusher infeed are one single piece, resulting in an impressive accuracy of up to +/- 0.1mm. Luke explains how the Salvador’s optimising algorithm “makes the job a lot easier” by working out the best yield from the timber, resulting in minimum wastage. The Salvador has reduced waste from 800mm per block to just 50mm for DWB: “We’ve got someone who comes in for firewood and he’s said ‘now you’ve got that new saw I’m not getting any waste’ – we always make a joke about it.” Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of the saw for Luke was the safety, and ease of use for the operator. “Your hands are nowhere near the blade – not once have I ever felt unsafe,” he explains.
DWB is already looking ahead to streamline its other plants, starting with its Anglia branch, representatives from which visited Luke for a demonstration on the Salvador. “They felt like they picked it up straight away with just me explaining it. I just gave them my honest opinion of the saw – the answer was ‘yes’.” The future for DWB looks exciting, and its forward-thinking approach has proved successful, with a +100% increase in production. Daltons Wadkin looks forward to continuing to work with DWB Timber Engineering, as the company continues to innovate its nationwide facilities with smart machinery. ZM 40 shredder in the Lerom production halls
Long wood scrap for long winters Russian furniture giant Lerom relies on a Weima ZM 40 four-shaft shredder to process more than 20m3 of woodwaste from production every day. In 1997, the first piece of furniture was sold under the Lerom brand. Over the past 20 years, the furniture factory has grown to become one of the largest Russian furniture manufacturers. Across more than 100,000m2, 1100 employees design, plan, build and package the high-quality furniture pieces in Sarechny. The product range includes modular furniture for living rooms, bedrooms and children’s rooms. The quality brand is known not only in all regions of Russia, but also in surrounding countries.
Simple operation of the four-shaft shredder via a Siemens PLC control system
20m3 of woodwaste per day Every day, Lerom produces more than 20m3 of woodwaste. Not only does this take up valuable storage space, it also poses a fire safety risk and is extremely costly to dispose of. Together with
its Russian partner SWEMA, Weima was able to offer an efficient, space-saving solution. In 2020, a Weima ZM 40 four-shaft shredder was added to the furniture factory’s machinery. The shredder is used in three-shift operation almost around the clock, and shreds more than 7m3 of woodwaste per shift, including long and bulky sections of particleboard, MDF and fibreboard, but also solid wood scraps. Weima ZM 40 – efficient shredding of bulky materials The material is fed by hand via the generously sized material feed hopper. The woodwaste is shredded between the two cutting shafts and pushed through the cutting gap by two clearing shafts. The screen placed underneath defines the grain size of the shredded material. Two powerful electric motors drive the four shafts. Due to the slow speed of approximately 25rpm, an extremely high torque is developed.
This enables a high throughput rate with low power consumption. The furniture company is particularly enthusiastic about the simple operation via Siemens PLC control, the high reliability of the shredder, and the high throughput. Saving heating costs with woodwaste The woodchips are then transported to the central chip bunker via an exhaust system. During the long, cold months, the shredded woodwaste serves as fuel for a woodchip heating system that heats the production rooms. The new recycling system enables significant cost savings – not only in waste disposal but also in heating the premises. Weima has been manufacturing robust shredders, briquetting and drainage presses for the disposal and processing of all types of waste for more than four decades. Its machines include single-shaft shredders, fourshaft shredders, cutting mills, briquette presses, packaging and draining presses. The popular blood orange machines are used in the wood, plastics, paper, packaging, metal and waste-toenergy industries. www.weima.com

Robotics & Automation Scottish manufacturer looks to Microvellum Software to help streamline its operation “There’s no doubt that technology is revolutionising traditional workflows in the cabinet manufacturing industry,” says Scott Purdom, owner of Lamin8 Scotland and Robert Sinclair Interiors. “We knew that we had to start thinking like a technology company to stay ahead of our competition and grow our two businesses. Choosing the right technology that would provide the right capabilities to drive our diverse product lines, however, was key to achieving our goals.” Lamin8 Scotland was formed in 2002 to fill a gap in the market for niche residential and commercial products. Like any wood product manufacturer just starting out, the Angusbased firm invested in the people, software, and machinery to help it deliver products to its clients. As the years went by, and the company grew, it began to realise that its choice of CAD/ CAM software was limiting its growth. And so, the search for new software began.
ROBOTICS & AUTOMATION 25
In 2009, Scott and his team selected new software from Microvellum, an AutoCADbased design-for-manufacturing solution, with the goal to unify the design, engineering and manufacturing workflows between Lamin8 and the company’s newly formed Robert Sinclair Interiors brand of residential cabinetry and furniture. “The nature of our business is very clientcentric,” says Scott. “When our clients ask for unique, bespoke designs and fabrication, we aim to deliver and exceed their expectations. Having software that limited our vision and our capacity to live up to our values was frustrating. We knew we had to make a change in our technology if we wanted to continue to grow. “Microvellum has changed the way we do business. Their staff in the UK have not only assisted me to get the best out of my software and machinery, but their extensive knowledge of manufacturing has helped us to streamline our operations, enabling us to be more professional and efficient. We’re currently working on integrating the latest cabinet library available, which is sure to give us even greater control and flexibility for bespoke cabinet designs.” With continued investment in education, technology, and machinery, Scott has ensured that his team has the most up-to-date, leadingedge production facilities to service the diverse demands of its clients. Recently, in partnership with Microvellum
and SCM Group, Scott’s team completed the integration of a new Morbidelli CX 220, the first of its kind sold within the UK. “It was quite impressive to see how everyone involved with installing my new SCM machine worked together to ensure that the connection worked perfectly and was integrated with the rest of my machinery and workflows,” says Scott. Lamin8’s production facility is also equipped with an SCM Record 132 router, Homag KDF
440 airTec edgebander, Biesse SKILL machining centre, and a Scheer PA4500 beam saw – all powered by Microvellum’s CNC technology. “At a time when the world and supply of materials has gone crazy, it’s nice to know we are working with a company that cares about what we do and has our back! We believe that all of this has enabled us to stay a cut above the rest when it comes to residential and commercial joinery in Scotland.” www.microvellum.com

Flexible integrated cell for machining special doors
There are doors for residential purposes and architectural doors that are much more difficult to produce than others – doors that require even more complex drilling and routing because they need to comply with specific characteristics in terms of thickness, size and weight. This is even more common in the case of doors for the hospital or tourism-reception applications, to give just a few examples, which need to meet the technical standards set out in safety and fire-prevention regulations – even achieving a size and weight above market standards. Matters complicate further when talking about producing doors with machining work and profiles that also differ considerably from one another. How is it possible to deal with all these problems while continuing to produce and deliver efficiently and rapidly? Thanks to the decades of experience that SCM’s engineering team has in researching and developing customised and turnkey solutions, SCM offers a flexible integrated cell for drilling and routing special square doors in excess of 120kg. The cell has already been adopted by state-of-the-art industry businesses including Norwegian company, Nordic Door, a market leader across the whole of northern Europe.

ROBOTICS & AUTOMATION
Key advantages The key advantages of the cell set-up are: while continuing to meet the needs of batch-1 machining, the cell still has a rapid set-up and productivity of 250 doors per shift; the cell complies with Industry 4.0 demands, with interconnected SCM technologies, and integrated with software systems and IoT; plus fully integrated and automatic process management with barcode identification of incoming doors, handling robot and control supervisor software, with the option of connecting to a company’s ERP/MES. A major advantage is the great versatility – while being fully automatic, the cell can be taken over by an operator as required for more sophisticated manual machining work. The process The cell’s main strong point is its ability to deal with doors of varying size and weight. This is thanks to a top-performing articulated robot that picks up the doors from the different loading stacks and places them on the SCM Aries PRT feeding conveyor. A barcode on the conveyor is used to automatically check that the door conforms with the machining program, and the data is sent to the line supervisor software, which runs a check and calls up the implementation programs of the cell’s machines. If routing a peephole is scheduled, the door is transferred directly to the Aries PRT. If no peephole, the door is once again picked up from the conveyor by the robot and transferred
to a specific position, where a fixed spindle performs the routing of a peephole on the door manoeuvred by the robot. At the end of this operation, the robot once again places the door on the motorised conveyor to transfer it to the Aries PRT. Aries PRT is a special machine that allows for parallel operating on both longitudinal sides with several operating units, to create routings on the left side for the hinges, and machining work on the right side for the lock and handle holes, guaranteeing machining times of under a minute. Once the machining work on the Aries PRT has been completed, a second articulated robot picks up the door from another conveyor belt and places it in one of the unloading stations
(the identification number can be personalised to suit the customer’s requirements) in compliance with the program instructions. If further special machining work is scheduled – for example, glass fitting – the second robot loads the door onto the Accord 25FX drilling and routing machining centre. Its key advantages include the highly flexible MATIC bar worktable, capable of automatically positioning itself in just a few seconds in line with the program and door size. This guarantees a notable reduction in cycle times. The process is completed with an efficient sorting and unloading station, where the doors are stacked in accordance with the order it belongs to. www.scmgroup.com

Intorex brings turning into the 21st century Intorex, the Barcelona-based specialist manufacturer of CNC turning equipment and five-axis CNC machining centres, recently completed an automation project that has involved the integration of a robot working between two machines that would normally be standalone items of equipment. The two machines in question were an Intorex model CKX 1300 hopper-fed CNC lathe, and an
Intorex LNX CNC rotary sander. The brief, from a Sweden-based chair manufacturer, was for the two machines to work automatically in tandem, with no manual intervention by an operator to transfer the parts between the machines. Both the lathe and the sander were basically standard machines, with the only modifications made to the outfeed of the lathe and the infeed loading of the sander.
The main work involved integrating the operating and sequencing software between them and the Yaskawa robot. All the required work was undertaken and tested in the Intorex factory. The machines have now been installed just under one year, and the customer is able to produce four sanded chair legs per minute, with just one operator. Other specialist projects that Intorex have undertaken include modifying one of its TMC CNC machining centres to produce hurley sticks for a customer in Ireland, and a CKX 600 CNC lathe for a UK company producing drumsticks, with the machine being pre-configured to accept a robot and a sander in the future. Exclusive UK agent JJ Smith reports that sales of Intorex machines into the UK and Ireland continue to be strong, and will be further bolstered by two completely new models of CNC lathe which have just come on line, and incorporate a number of innovations that will give added flexibility and increased production output. These include the ability to turn and sand at the same time, and a router head with toolchanger for making a wide range of different machining operations. 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk www.jjsmith.co.uk

Edgebanding Materials & Technology
Egdebanding with Micro Emission PUR adhesives Kenyon has been keeping edgebanders gluing since 1979, delivering what the company describes as the “complete package” – quality products, excellent service, technical support and product training. Kenyon says it has grown into Henkel’s number-one supply route for adhesives across the UK to woodworking and building components, and is rightly proud to be Henkel’s Premium Partner. “Did you know,” asks Kenyon’s MD, Ian Kenyon, “that Henkel offers Micro Emission edgebanding adhesives supplied under the tried, tested and proven Technomelt brand name used by many of the well-known UK and European furniture manufacturers? “With companies becoming increasingly mindful of health and safety, they are now asking Kenyon’s what options are available with the PUR adhesives, that would allow them to improve their operating procedures, whilst at the same time reducing risk,” says Ian. “The solution is simple – Technomelt PUR 270-9 ME, or, for machine speeds up to 80m/ min, Technomelt PUR 270-5 ME. These two grades offer the same performance benefits that come with PUR technologies, but without the hazardous labelling, making it more environmentally friendly and safer for operators to handle.
Why use Micro Emission PUR adhesives? “Micro Emission PUR adhesives from Henkel, such as Technomelt PUR 270-9 ME and Technomelt PUR 270-5 ME, contain less than 0.1% isocyanate, therefore reducing the hazardous isocyanate-containing vapours by up to a staggering -90%! “Nobody likes warning labels, and the fact that we can now eliminate this has huge benefits, not only to ourselves but also for our end-users, whilst still providing them with PUR adhesives used for bonding all commonly used edging materials – PVC, ABS, veneer and solid wood to core boards,” explains Ian. “Having tested the Technomelt PUR 270-9 ME and Technomelt PUR 270-5 ME, I’m confident that these adhesives run very similar to the market-leading Technomelt PUR 270-7, which is our premium hot-melt adhesive for edgebanding, and our highest-selling product, due to its clean running and many performance benefits. This is something that is always commented on by companies who are starting to use it for the first time. “I think that by adding Micro Emission PUR adhesives to complement the range, we now have the ability to meet the demands put forward by companies and deliver on what is expected in these ever-changing times. “Technomelt Micro Emission PUR adhesives offer everything you would expect from a Henkel PUR adhesive – low coat weight, tight joints, invisible glue lines and exceptional high performance, combined with excellent heat and
water resistance. And these grades have less environmental impact – the complete all-round package. Technomelt 270-9 ME and Technomelt 270-5 ME are proving to be the win-win product of 2021. Technomelt Micro Emission PUR adhesives really are the future for our customers and the planet! “Supplied from stock in 2kg blocks, 20kg drums and 200kg drums, we have your application covered, and the environmental impact reduced,” concludes Ian, “so why not improve your micro-climate at the same time as improving your production, by changing to Technomelt Micro Emission PUR adhesive today?” 0161 627 1001 www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Introducing the all-new Genisis edgebanders Genisis Compact edgebander
Long-established independent machinery supplier, J & C O’Meara, has added several new models of edgebander to its bestselling Genisis range. Established in 1990, J & C O’Meara introduced the first of the Genisis machines around 15 years ago, starting with the highly popular range of sliding table panel saws. This was followed with the introduction of the Genisis 512 edgebander in 2014, giving an affordable solution for those looking for a compact edgebander with pre-milling and corner rounding. Over the course of time, J & C’s customers have grown and expanded, and naturally wanted more in terms of specification – such as working with thicker materials, separate corner rounding, anti-adhesive spray if using PUR glue, and a nesting solution if they have purchased a CNC. With the addition of the new models, the Genisis range of edgebanders offers one of the most comprehensive solutions for panelprocessing companies – from the smaller company looking for a flexible machine with pre-milling and corner rounding, to the high-end industrial manufacturer looking for a PLCcontrolled machine with automatic setting. The all-new line-up comprises industrial, heavy-duty machines, manufactured in Europe. Features include a quick-release glue pot, and start with the Genisis Compact, which is
Genisis 6 RTF Pro
equipped with independent end-trim saws, flush trim, profile scraping and buffing. This machine is aimed at the small- to medium-sized manufacturer which needs a versatile solution for the application of up to 3mm-thickness tape on panels up to 60mm thick. The machine is also suitable for the application of real wood edging tape, having quick exclusion of the scrapers. The next model is the Genisis 6TF, which is of a higher specification and includes features such as pre-milling, preheating of the edge, anti-adhesive spray, two end saws, flush trimming with nesting solution, profile and glue scrapers, solvent spray and buffers. This machine is controlled via an easy-to-use colour touchscreen, with all operating elements easily

accessible, and with the scrapers having quick exclusion if applying real wood edging. This is followed by the Genisis Pro RTF, which also adds an independent corner rounding unit. All machines run at a productive 10m/min and are currently available for demonstration at J & C’s impressive new Lancashire showroom. Further machines to be added shortly include the high-specification Genisis 2 RTF machines, having two corner rounders available as manually set or auto set, with CNC adjustments for the working units depending upon tape thickness and material height. These machines have a higher working speed of 14m/min. For further information or to book a demonstration call 01704 893109 or visit www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

As an add-on for the worktop, a modern counter gives a room cosiness and offers additional surface space
New kitchen, new look – with worktop edgings from Ostermann Cookery has become a hobby for many. Along with this shift in focus towards cooking as a cherished pastime instead of a duty, the kitchen is taking centre stage in many homes. More people are investing in professional remodelling works – and, when it comes to worktop edgings, its large selection makes Ostermann a perfect partner for the trade. Nowadays, a kitchen is so much more than just a place to prepare meals. It is a hobby room, event location, and a meeting point for gathering friends and family. So, it is little wonder that more and more people are investing in remodelling their kitchen these days. For those who do not want to replace their whole kitchen at once, a professional worktop exchange or extension by a carpenter/ cabinetmaker is often already enough to give the room a new feel-good look.
The combination of stone and wood decors has a natural appeal. For a chunkylooking counter element, one can obtain all ABS edgings in widths up to 100mm

To give as much leeway as possible for the design, Ostermann supplies a wide range of ABS edgings for the latest worktop decors, in all widths up to 100mm and in different thicknesses. Find selected edgings and other information on the topic by entering the search item ‘#Highlights08’ on Ostermann’s website, www.ostermann.eu. New worktop – new look A worktop’s great horizontal face largely influences the appeal of a room. The board should therefore be chosen carefully, and not without professional advice by a furnituremaker – the diversity in worktop decors is huge. But, regardless of whether the choice falls on a wood, concrete, metal, glass, or stone look, Ostermann provides the

matching ABS edgings for many different decors. To avoid residual quantities and save storage costs, edgings are supplied in small purchasing quantities from just 1m. Stocked goods ordered by 4pm will leave the warehouse that same day. Tip – customised counter elements To gain more surface space and maybe make room for an additional eating place, one can add a small counter to the worktop and create a new, state-of-the-art look. A nice visual effect is obtained when combining two different surface finishes in two different board thicknesses, such as wood and stone or concrete and wood, on one piece of furniture. Use the larger board for the counter element
to achieve enough stability. For a perfect finish at the edges, all ABS edgings are available at Ostermann in widths up to 100mm. Protect furniture against moisture When processing worktop edgings, Ostermann recommends the use of PUR hotmelt adhesive. It is distinguished by a high level of heat and moisture resistance. A particularly good option is REDOCOL products. Planning to apply the edgings with one of the modern zerobondline technologies such as laser, hot air or infrared technology? The quality decors are also available with a functional layer specially adjusted to the respective technology. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Cut & Edge Leeds – a sure and swift partner helping SMEs deliver more Cut & Edge Leeds is a full-service edgebanding, panel-cutting and CNCmachining business, part of a network operation which includes other branches across the UK. The family business is run by Chris, Andy and Nick Jones, who set up the business after discovering a niche in the market where they felt they could target its services towards SME clients who operate on a smaller basis and typically do not have their own machines or transport to provide the high-quality, sophisticated designs and work needed to satisfy today’s customers. “We understand the challenges faced by smaller businesses, and we have set ourselves up to provide wellcrafted, finished, machined components to high standards in a timely fashion for a broad customer base,” explains Nick. “Alongside our skilled machinists, we have a full range of new machinery, all less than two years old, including a Biesse Rover A Smart CNC machine, an Akron 1300 edgebander, a Holz-Her Auriga1308 XL edgebander and a Biesse beam saw and Skipper machine. This set-up typically enables us to deliver on orders within five days.” The company’s design work is all carried out using industry-leading Imos design software, which allows the Leeds firm to design bespoke units for its clients. Cut & Edge Leeds is part of a nationwide business, but being based in Leeds, it can deliver to Scotland and the South at least once a week. As Nick says: “We can deliver in curtain-sided vehicles, or smaller transits depending on the size of the order.” As Cut & Edge Leeds operates within the manufacturing industry, in some ways, the company needs the struggles that companies go through to fuel the demand for its services. “We know the importance of the price being right, but also being quick and on time is crucially important to our clients – and I know full well from lots of feedback that our clients value our clear and consistent approach.”
Trend-wise, Nick says that grey tones remain popular at the moment, but that whites are coming back again. He also notes that an increasing number of customers are creating dressing rooms and walk-in-wardrobes at the moment. “The last 18 months have been both good and bad at the same time,” says Nick. “A lack of stock has meant that, like many other businesses, we have not been able to supply as much as we would have wanted, and of course, as has been windely reported, lots of people have spent decent money on their homes this
last year, so demand is currently strong and the outlook is positive.” To satisfy growing demand, Nick is keen on further investment to help speed up the process and achieve even higher standards by adding new technology to the company’s set-up – a second edgebander is in the offing, alongside other upgrades. Perhaps just as importantly, the Leeds business is looking to employ a sales associate who can help increase business. 0113 234 0737 www.cutandedgeleeds.co.uk

SOFIT solutions – never just approved, always guaranteed SOFIT recently achieved a significant milestone in its history – that of a 40-year anniversary. The celebration of this auspicious occasion was somewhat muted due to the ongoing Covid situation – that said, it is still no mean achievement. Now entering its 41st year, SOFIT is firmly established as one of Italy’s premier suppliers of high-end industrial panel-processing equipment. ”Notwithstanding the past year or so of restrictions, lockdowns and forced factory closures, Sofit has had a record-breaking
period in terms of sales, and equally so in the acquisition of new stock,” explains Massimiliano (Max) Castaldo, SOFIT’s European sales manager. “As we are now halfway through 2021 with positive optimism and renewed enthusiasm still intact, we are hopefully within touching distance of some form of normality returning very soon, and the orders are still coming in thick and fast. “SOFIT is widely regarded to be the number one European supplier of fully refurbished industrial edgebanders of all types – single
siders, contour edgers, and full-execution combination lines – specialising mainly in heavy industrial machines from the two market leaders, IMA and Homag,” says Max. SOFIT also works, on occasion, with the industrial edgebander models of SCM, namely the XD, STEFANI S and STEFANI 1, as well as the BIESSE Stream B and the Omnia range. F&JP asked Max what the advantages were of buying a fully refurbished edgebander – or, for that matter, any fully refurbished woodworking machinery. Here is what he replied:

Fully refurbished edgebanders – just what are the advantages? Price “This is without doubt the first major advantage. There are significant savings to be enjoyed, which can range from 30-65%. As the machine is refurbished and comes with a warranty, ergo, the risk is minimal,” says Max. Delivery “In today’s market, for good-quality, industrial panel-processing equipment, one can easily wait for between 12-20 months or more. With SOFIT, a fully refurbished edgebander can be delivered between 2-6 weeks, dependent upon customer requirement/specification, and comes automatically with a full SOFIT warranty. “Extended/very long delivery dates for the individual enterprise can be a major commercial handicap, meaning possible lost orders, less profits, failure to expand, poorer quality, longer delivery dates for their clients … “All these things can cause major short- and long-term problems, dramatically affecting profits and margins. “Another situation is that, having to wait the thick end of 10 months to a year for your machinery to be delivered and installed, the risk of negative market fluctuations becomes much higher, your competitor may likely steal your customers during this elongated waiting period, and by the time your machine arrives your market may have plateaued. Bigger bang for the buck “A SOFIT fully refurbished edgebander offers far greater value for money and obviously less fiscal depreciation when compared to a new machine. Buying new machines is very much akin to buying a new car – the minute you ‘drive it off the forecourt’ it loses around 30-50% of its value, and if not then, for sure in the first year of operation. This most certainly is not the case for rebuilt and refurbished machines.
“A fully refurbished edgebander will very likely perform as efficiently and possibly better than a new edgebander, ergo the same productivity for a lot less money, equalling more profit” Same productivity “A fully refurbished edgebander will very likely perform as efficiently and possibly better than a new edgebander, ergo the same productivity for a lot less money, equalling more profit. Meeting market demand immediately Instead of losing months and months of extra profit and depending upon the machine spec, one could be waiting the thick end of two years for a new edgebander!! That is a lot of lost business and/or a lot of lost profit by way of having to pay for enhanced hours working and overtime, etc, to achieve customer satisfaction. Branded products “Let’s face it, everyone wants to drive a Bentley or a Ferrari, but we cannot all afford such luxuries. However, with a fully refurbished
machine, one can afford to have high-end industrial panel-processing equipment at a fraction of the price of new, and enjoy the enhanced profit that brings. Back-up “Obviously, it is always wise to have a plan B, namely a back-up machine. For example, one cannot often afford to have two ‘brand-new’ pieces of kit at the same time – however, one can possibly get a new edger and a rebuilt edger of a similar spec. It’s always handy to have a parachute. Specification “With rebuilt machinery, an enterprise can often afford to have a much-higher specification edgebander with ‘all of the options’, as it is way more affordable than buying new. To this end, the buyer can have his cake and eat it. Are there any pitfalls? “Yes indeed,” says Max. “There are things that a prospective buyer must really be on lookout for. The first is to make sure there is a real warranty coming with every machine. “The warranty must come as a matter of course, not as part of a negotiation. It should be there from the very start and not be part of the negotiating two-step, especially if a machine is being sold as fully refurbished! Also, ensure that whoever you buy from can offer a full turnkey package – delivery, training, and installation. “Health and safety is taken very seriously in the UK and Eire, and Sofit is the only company to offer its UK customers the service of having their machines brought up to the current safety standards which are applied to brand-new machinery. “There are many wood-processing companies that look to achieve the highest-possible safety standards for their staff and require PUWER levels for all the plant and equipment they purchase. There are others who are ok with

the existing CE certification, and for the most part this generally meets the basic safety requirements required in the UK – whereas some clients may wish to have the machine brought up to the very-latest CE standard, or indeed the new UKCA.” “Many suppliers of rebuilt and refrubished machinery, and those simply selling straightforward secondhand machines, will shift uncomfortably if asked to provide such a service, and usually come up with 1001 reasons as to why improving operational safety is not really necessary – walk away!” Advises Priyesh Bhana, SOFIT’s UK sales rep. “I believe,” adds Priyesh, “that SOFIT is the only company that has the skillsets and expertise at hand to offer the client the service for PUWER and/or CE upgrading, but also will take on the responsibility of line control – obviously these services come at an extra cost to the client. “Finally,” Priyesh warns, “avoid such terms as ‘approved’ and ‘functional’. What exactly do these words mean? Approved by whom? The seller? As the saying goes, self-praise is no recommendation. What on earth does the term ‘functional’ mean in true engineering terms? The electro spindle goes round but it couldn’t cut its way through butter, let alone MDF, but it’s ‘functional’ – definitely buyer beware!”
“With rebuilt machinery, an enterprise can often afford to have a much-higher specification edgebander with ‘all of the options’ as it is way more affordable than buying new. To this end, the buyer can have his cake and eat it!”
Prudence “Starting a new business or expanding an existing one is always very expensive,” says SOFIT joint MD Guido Mulassano, “so it is prudent to consider purchasing rebuilt/ refurbished machinery, or for that matter plain and simple secondhand machinery.” “Clearly, the most obvious benefit is the purchase price,” adds Guido’s brother and coMD, Franco. “Our refurbished machinery works exactly the same as a new machine – we offer virtually the same service and guarantee regimes as the original machine manufacturer, and branded products at a substantial difference in price when compared to the cost of new.” “Looking forward, SOFIT is proud to support the W Exhibition at the NEC in February 2022, and is looking to take a larger stand. Myself and the SOFIT team is looking forward to seeing you there,” concludes Max. Products A new era in furniture manufacturing – push-to-open technologies Cabinets and drawers without handles are nowadays a standard part of the product portfolios of kitchen, bathroom and living room furniture manufacturers. Their sleek designs with uninterrupted lines have considerable appeal to consumers, and are becoming the norm. But there are also efficiency gains for manufacturers, such as reduced complexity in terms of manufacturing processes and stock management, as well as greater appeal and the ability to stand out from the competition through modern design. In order to further complement its push-latch technology, Titus has added considerable push-to-open expertise with the acquisition of the kinetics division of the Simon Group. This means that Titus is uniquely positioned to bring to market some of the most innovative push-toopen solutions for drawers, pull-out organisers, cabinet doors, hinged furniture doors and interior sliding doors. Handle-less furniture is a standard part of elegant furniture ranges, and push-to-open systems are widely used around the world. Additional practical benefits include the ability to hygienically clean the cabinets, with no areas that could harbour bacteria, such as around handles and knobs. And, in order to offer customers the very best, Titus decided to upgrade handleless furniture by including its established ConfidentClose feature. The Titus Push Latch Gen2 incorporates a softener that controls the motion, making the opening action decisive but soft, sleek and precise, to the door’s right distance – not too slow, and not too fast at the same time. With the second generation of push-to-open,
Titus follows the trend of furniture doors opening softly to eliminate the unnecessary bouncing of doors at the end of the opening process, and the whole sequence is quiet and slow in motion. In this way, a thoroughly satisfying experience is offered to a customer wishing for both a soft opening and a gentle closing movement for their furniture closing mechanisms. Push-to-open systems for drawers is flexible and ideally suited to modular furniture concepts. This is not only useful for double wall drawers, but also for various pull-out systems and wire baskets. The system, which is a one-for-all concept, ensures that a single mechanism fits various drawer sizes and can be assembled thanks to its fast and intuitive placeand-fix mounting (it is important to mention that the push-to-open is highly tolerant, which ensures reliable performance even if not all drill holes and installation are perfectly aligned). Like with most of Titus’ innovations, the push-to-open system is based on a modular approach, meaning that with minor modifications and a combination of standard components, specific requirements of various applications can be adapted. The compact design, with soft-close and push-to-open in one unit, offers multiple uses, from pantry units to other sliding systems where handles are not wanted for aesthetic reasons. Crucially, the push-to-open furniture fits in with a modern desire for calm, quiet and inviting environments. Minimum effort, quiet operation and seamless design are at the core of the latest range – one that Titus believes will revolutionise the way people look at their home environments. www.uk.titusplus.com

Constant product development, working on design and surface performance, has ensured that the most fashionable and hard-wearing products are included throughout the offer. The dp-specialist range from Decorative Panels Lamination includes Senoplast high gloss, matt acrylic unicolour designs, as well as Senoplast TopX high-performance, scratch-resistant acrylic surfaces. There is a colour for every design need. High-gloss acrylics from Senoplast continue to meet the needs of current design trends and enrich the furniture market worldwide with their unmistakable surface quality, excellent gloss effect and unique depth of gloss. A PUR hotmelt is used by the West Yorkshire-based company to laminate Senoplast acrylic to achieve the perfect finish, available in surface thicknesses of 0.7–1mm, all supplied laminated with a protective film. Senoplast matt can be used in any contemporary environment, either individually or in conjunction with the Senoplast gloss designs. The tactile, high-quality surface has the added bonus of the TopX high-abrasion-resistant lacquer finish. Senoplast acrylic TopX is a scratch-resistant material that offers extreme resilience while maintaining a full high-gloss finish. With very high scour and scratch resistance, the product is ideally suited for use on horizontal surfaces that are subjected to heavy use. Serica is the ultimate premium finish from the dp-specialist range. This robust PVC is silky smooth to touch and adds a luxurious supermatt statement when laminated to MDF or dp-lite hollowcore board. Incorporating anti-scratch and anti-fingerprint technology, Serica is designed to cover all types of furnishings in homes, offices and stores. One of the main advantages Serica has over other matt products on the market is its ability to be repaired. Serica surfaces have anti-scratch properties, but in case micro-scratches do occur, the surface can be easily repaired with thermal heating. A simple iron can be used to renovate the surface and give it a new life. The PVC’s resilience means the surface is robust enough not to require a protective film, making it easy
to process within a factory. The Serica surface is extremely flexible and can also be used for membrane pressing and profile wrapping. Complementing the Senoplast and Serica offer is a huge selection of polypropylene foils – the ideal product for those that require a fully recyclable solution. It is a cost-effective way to fulfil the need for high-gloss finishes for any market with a smooth, high-quality laminated finish. Ultra Gloss PET offers the ultimate in durability, with excellent scratch- and wear-resistant properties. Blum brings the infrastructure for smart solutions to furniture At this year’s digital interzum, Austrian fittings manufacturer Blum showcased its infrastructure solutions to bring smart applications to furniture. This infrastructure forms the backbone for future applications and smart ideas from manufacturers of furniture and kitchen units. The fittings specialist presented its vision of a connected home in a dedicated area of the digital trade show stand.
Illuminating furniture is functional, because it makes cabinet contents visible, and emotional, because it creates atmospheric background lighting

Voice control is just the tip of the iceberg – these solutions are all about connectivity and automation. As a consequence of the digitalisation of all areas of life, Blum showed how furniture that is connected to the web and has a power supply will in future add something extra to home comforts. The renowned fittings expert presented this future concept by means of a modular infrastructure that allows electricity to be provided in the furniture with little expense or effort. The cleverly designed and easily integrated solution acts as the basis for future electronic and smart applications – whether with voice control or as the basis for home automation. A system for future ideas Blum showcased two specific examples of how electricity can be used in furniture – illuminated pull-outs and a USB-C port. Light in
“Blum presented this future concept by means of a modular infrastructure that allows electricity to be provided in the furniture with little expense or effort” furniture serves two different purposes – one functional, as the contents of the pull-outs are well-lit and visible, and one emotional, as the atmospheric background lighting creates decorative effects. The power connection Blum had installed in the drawer back is an extremely versatile interface. The company relies here on the widely used USB-C standard, allowing many smart devices to be charged where they are being kept – be they smartphones, tablets or laptops, but also potentially battery-powered kitchen utensils or electric shavers. Wireless charging would also be possible in the future, by integrating charging pads.
New technologies, the same objective – greater convenience and comfort The fittings manufacturer wants its innovation to pave the way for customers to react to the smart home living trend. The objective still remains to provide added value for furniture users. Blum expert Fabian Längle explains: “The focus is always on one thing – creating customised solutions that make life more comfortable. We are convinced that in the future, smart furniture will have an important role to play.” 01908 285700 www.blum.com

Titus launches space-efficient slimline drawer range Cabinet hardware expert Titus has launched a second-generation range of its popular Tekform double-wall drawers. The new slimline versions feature a sleek and visually appealing design, and have 14mm side panels that maximise efficient utilisation of drawer space. They also incorporate the precision-engineered Titus hydraulic dampers to ensure a reliable and consistent soft-closing action, combined with low pull-out force. Tekform slimline drawers are available in three heights – 70, 145 and 182mm – and can be supplied in a range of visually appealing finishes that ideally complement contemporary furniture designs. A further key benefit is that they use the same drilling pattern for runners as their predecessors, which facilitates mounting in existing products and designs. Drawers are fast and easy to assemble, thanks to the EasyFix locking system used for the frontpanel connector, which requires only hand insertion and a quarter
of a turn with a screwdriver to lock the panel securely in place. Reliable lifelong ConfidentClose soft closing is assured by the use of the renowned Titus singledirection precision engineered hydraulic dampers, which smoothly slow down the linear movement
of the drawer as it reaches the closed position, but offer minimal resistance to movement when the drawer is being opened. Installation of the drawers within the cabinet is fast and straightforward. Extended tolerances in cabinet construction
can be accommodated without compromising accurate alignment, smooth and silent operation and excellent stability in the open position. In addition, variations of up to +/-1mm in bottom panel width size are acceptable. www.titusplus.com
Dramatic kitchen island made using prime materials This creative design from Charlotte Raynaud Hegenbart combines a visually seamless Hi-Macs island unit with bespoke joinery from Hegenbart Cabinetmakers. The spectacular island draws the eye with its simple yet sophisticated finish, which not only looks great, but is super hygienic, and robust enough to withstand daily wear for many years to come. For Charlotte Raynaud, “the kitchen is the centre of the home, and its design should encourage people to move around, spend time together
and enjoy good company. A kitchen should be beautiful to look at as well as welcoming and functional. The design of a kitchen layout should leave nothing to chance.” With a natural, sinuous flow, the island is layered in different shades of Hi-Macs and contrasting metallic detail. The island top and upper sides are in Ispani, chosen for its even veining, similar to that of natural stone. Peanut butter was chosen for the island base because of its similarity to the natural stone floor, sourced from Portugal. The base blends into

the floor, emphasising the perfect surfaces of the island, which seems to float above the floor, suspended in space. The sink, the hob and the secret spice rack, which can be raised from within the worksurface, are all perfectly integrated into the worktop, with no visible seams. The excellent thermoforming and seamless characteristics of Hi-Macs enabled Hegenbart to manufacture this complex and uniquely shaped island at its recently installed five-axis CNC machining centre. Felix Hegenbart says: “Hi-Macs is a product unmatched by any other, offering creative freedom and the ability to construct innovative pieces.” The CNC machining tool also made it possible to produce the unusually complex-shaped plywood moulds used for the thermoforming and assembly of the island. This kitchen is also remarkable for the top-quality materials used throughout – materials which work together to perfection: the
cupboard carcasses are in natural American walnut; the fronts, which were handmade in the workshop, are in elm veneer; and there are box-jointed drawers in solid walnut. The island and open niche worksurfaces are in Hi-Macs, with details in a metallic finish. The recessed handles were designed to blend with the veining of the material. As a backdrop, two complete walls are panelled in handmade elm veneer. They are in elegant contrast to the island, allowing it the centre stage, while adding warmth to the whole. The kitchen includes two existing rounded arches which lead to the entrance hall and the dining room. Finally, two open niches, lined in a burnished metallic finish, give an elegant depth to the kitchen. In the niche to the right, an openwork metal screen echoes the shape of the leaves of the olive trees surrounding the house, bringing nature to the forefront of this impressive kitchen. www.himacs.eu

Wadkin Bursgreen launches three new woodworking machines AMS has added three new machine lines to its already impressive portfolio of Wadkin Bursgreen woodworking machinery, including two new ranges – wall saws and grinders – as well as new models within its crosscut range. Since last year, AMS has been looking for new machines and models because of numerous customer requests. One of the ranges that was on the company’s mind for a while now was wall saw machines. AMS director Steve McGloin says: “We have a big range of panel saws, but some of our customers prefer a wall saw because of restricted space in workshops. For years, we have been aware of machines out there, but were looking for a top-quality wall saw – safe and easy for operation, as all our Wadkin Bursgreen machines are.” He continues: “We have added the Wadkin Bursgreen Premium 4122 and Standard 4122 wall saws to our ever-expanding range of panel saws. The Wadkin Bursgreen wall saws have powerful main motors and can carry the largest jumbo sheets that can be processed. The difference between the Standard and the Premium is that the latter also includes a digital measuring system, pneumatic locking to the saw head and a TRK extraction system.” Another field that the Leicestershire woodworking company wanted to cover was grinders. AMS’ sales manager says: During our 13 years of history, we have rebuilt and sold a lot of Wadkin NZs and Wadkin Visage grinders, but we wanted to have our own Wadkin Bursgreen grinder with the latest state-of-the-art technology.” AMS is well known and respected in the timber milling industry, and with its Wadkin pedigree the Skeffington-based company has developed the Wadkin Bursgreen 320 NZ automatic straight knife grinder.
This new machine is capable of accepting 320mm-long blocks and can process up to 32 knives on a 320mm-diameter cutting circle. All actions are controlled from the built-in PLC display – and the NZ name is a direct nod towards its Wadkin heritage, which burns deep in the AMS team’s DNA.
The last incorporations are the Wadkin Bursgreen WB 640 and WB 700 radial arm crosscuts. The already comprehensive Wadkin Bursgreen crosscut range is composed of radial-arm, upcut, high-speed and automatic Anglemaster crosscuts. AMS says the new machines will sit nicely either side of the existing classic WB 400 radial-arm crosscut, giving a wider range of material sizes to be processed. AMS now has over 320 machines in stock, with 42 installed in the demonstration area ready for customer demonstrations. To visit the AMS showroom or for more information, call 0844 844 9949 or email sales@advancedmachinery.co.uk – or contact the business via Instagram or Facebook @wadkin_bursgreen.

AAG expands range of specialpurpose routing/cutting tools
Two new additions to the range of specialpurpose routing/cutting tools supplied by AAG via its CNCShop ecommerce division comprise different versions of the latest solid carbide ‘0’ series of single-flute spiral tools manufactured by Amana. As with other special-purpose tools, they have been designed to accommodate applications for which standard spiral tools would be less effective in terms of cut quality and tool life expectancy. Available in multiple sizes, configurations and routing/cutting depth options, the ‘0’ series incorporates a proprietary carbide coating system that provides enhanced protection against tool deterioration caused by abrasion, erosion, galling and fretting. This ensures constant razor-sharp cut edges and a superior mirror material surface finish, as well as a radical reduction in problems associated with chip removal efficiency and chip re-welding during the routing/cutting process that is often encountered when standard spiral tools are employed. The Amana ‘0’ series of tools will process a wide range of disparate materials. Typically and respectively these include aluminium, and aluminium (ACM) and titanium (TCM) composites and acrylic and plastics, in addition to various non-ferrous metals and alloys such as brass and copper and foamed board formulations.
These latest additions, which are likely to be expanded in the future, complement other special-purpose tools from AAG – in particular, those used in the industrial woodworking, furniture production, joinery and panelprocessing sectors. Of special significance is the Marathon Compression Tool. This has been developed specifically for the processing of solid and particle woods (MDF) and double-
sided laminates, which are liable to fracture or fray when standard spiral tools have been employed. The Marathon Compression Tool is available in a choice of diameters and lengths and incorporates a special coating that provides extra protection to the cut edge of materials from the high temperatures generated during the routing/cutting process. The upward/ downward motion and special geometry of the tool ensures a perfect edge finish on the top and bottom of the material being processed – an attribute that is particularly significant when processing materials like melamine and other double-sided laminates. Other special-purpose tools within the wide range of general-purpose tools, spare parts, accessories and consumables supplied by AAG via its CNCShop division include a Diamond Cutting Tool for acrylic and various plastics, and a Long Reach Tool for the processing of foam and similar ‘soft’ materials that require a deeper cut capability. 01952 291600 www.CNCShop.com

Updates How fire warning signs can help enforce a fire safety policy Fire warning signs are a key part of your health and safety requirements and legal responsibilities, writes First Mats. No matter the type of business or environment, you need to provide clear, unambiguous information for staff, visitors and customers to allow them to respond quickly and safely in the event of an emergency, as well as advise them on how to behave to minimise the risks. There are a lot of different fire safety signs on the market, so it can be tricky to get a clear picture of what you need, both legally and from a safety perspective. Here’s our overview of the different types of signs, best practice for using them, and your legal obligations … The different types Fire safety signs can be broadly split into four categories – prohibition, warning, mandatory and equipment/ exit. Prohibition signs are used to show that a behaviour or activity is not permitted. These include the commonly seen ‘No Smoking’ sign, as well as signs such as ‘No Unauthorised Personnel’ and ‘No Naked Flames’. Warning signs indicate that there is a particular risk or hazard present — for example, a high voltage area or flammable liquid store. Mandatory signs give instructions to ensure risks are minimised. These include signs like ‘Fire Door Keep Shut’ and ‘Fire Door Keep Clear’.
Equipment and exit signage is used to show the quickest way out of the building, as well as the location of, and route to, first aid equipment, alarm call points and extinguishers. These categories are usually further broken down with colours – Red indicates prohibited activities – Yellow advises caution – Green denotes positive actions – Blue shows mandatory information Shapes are also used to immediately convey meaning – A circle with a diagonal bar indicates that something is forbidden – Triangles are used for warnings – Green square/rectangle is used for safety information – Red square/rectangle is used for fire-specific safety information Placement Signs should be placed frequently and visibly. If a visitor is wandering around any part of your site they should never be too far from a sign pointing them towards the nearest emergency exit, alarm and/or extinguisher, making sure that any junctions or changes of direction are clearly marked. Don’t put your sign in an obscure place like behind a piece of machinery. Make sure they are clearly and easily visible (not too high, not too low) and ideally can be read in low- or no-light environments (dark corridors, power cuts, etc) — so look for luminous signs or models with independent emergency lighting. Emergency and safety signs should be kept separate from other signs and notices — placing them on a noticeboard that is full of other posters, pictures and information can cause them to be significantly harder to see as they are lost in the crowd. As a guide, signs placed on walls should be 1.7m from the floor so
that they are both conspicuous and easy to read. You’ll also want to make sure that your signs are of a good quality. Signs that fade, curl or fall down are going to need replacing to ensure that they are still both useful and compliant with the law. Make sure to conduct regular maintenance as well, ensuring that the sign is clean and legible. Lastly, make sure that any changes to the site, whether temporary or permanent, are reflected in your use of signs — arrows pointing to a door that is jammed or blocked could prove to be disastrous. Legal responsibilities The laws regarding fire safety are far ranging and can seem quite daunting. At the core of them all, though, is good health and safety practice — both in reducing the likelihood of a fire and how to deal with one if it breaks out. – Evacuation routes must be readily available to anyone on-site, and must be easy to understand – Fire response equipment like alarms and extinguishers must be easy to find, access and use – First aid equipment must be similarly easy to find, access and use – Fire safety instructions also have to be displayed and understood by anyone on-site – Behavioural signs like ‘Fire Door Keep Shut’ must be used to reduce
risks and possible escalations in the event of an emergency The key law to be familiar with is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, 2005 (available on the UK Government website). Noncompliance can result in criminal proceedings against directors, safety managers and proprietors. Punishments include fines and up to two years’ imprisonment. In the event of a fatality, charges can include manslaughter or murder. No Smoking signs are mandated under the Health Act 2006 Part 1 and Smoke Free Signs Regulation 2012. Regulations covering the quality, design and content of the signs themselves are now grouped under BS ISO EN 7010:2011 — Graphical symbols, safety colours and safety signs, registered safety signs. This supersedes and incorporates the previous standard BS 5499, relating to safety signage. Make sure you’ve reviewed these general laws as well as any site-, location-, industry- or equipmentrelated specific laws before you conduct a fire safety review. www.firstmats.co.uk First Mats started life as a safety matting specialist, but has since expanded to become a complete industrial and commercial supplies company. The focus of First Mats is to provide safety-focused products that improve the wellbeing of staff through quality approved products, backed up by extensive knowledge.

Following the success of previous in-house exhibitions, Daltons Wadkin has announced dates for its autumn event – 28-30th September, to be held at its impressive Nottingham showroom. The Wood & Panel Machinery Show will showcase the latest equipment from leading European manufacturers, including Salvador crosscut saws, Kimla CNC routers, Elcon vertical saws, Altendorf panel saws, Stenner band resaws and classical equipment from Wadkin and SCM. “We receive excellent customer feedback from our in-house exhibitions,” comments MD Alex Dalton. “In the absence of other national exhibitions this year we think it is more important than ever to host a spectacular event where visitors can see live demonstrations on the latest solid timber- and panel-processing equipment in a safe environment.”
73
This year’s show will be the largest ever, comprising a wide range of industrial machinery for processing solid timber, panels, composites, plastics, non-ferrous metals and more. “We are proud to be sole distributors in the UK and Ireland for some of the industries’ key brands,” enthuses Alex. “The show gives our customers the opportunity to see equipment in action and discuss their own requirements with product experts.” Cutting-edge technology is spearheaded by two Kimla CNC machines featuring the latest linear drive systems. The option replaces traditional rack-and-pinion drives, resulting in faster working speeds, a resolution of one nanometre and accuracy of five micrometres/m. Crosscutting is a significant theme of this year’s show, which will feature no fewer than eight different models. New for 2021 are two models from crosscut expert Salvador – SuperUp and SuperPush 150. The all-new SuperUp is the latest design of semi-automatic crosscut saw, replacing the Classic range. The new SuperPush 150 is an evolution in crosscutting, combining the compact form factor of a manual machine with the programmable power of an automatic optimising crosscut saw. The market-leading Salvador SuperPush 200 and SuperAngle 600 programable optimising saws will be joined by radial-arm saws from Graule, Wadkin and SCM. SCM equipment is a new addition to Daltons Wadkin’s already impressive portfolio, having been appointed official agent for the Italian manufacturer earlier this year. On show will be a selection of panel saws, spindle moulders, planers, wide-belt sanders and other classical equipment from the range. Panel saw technology moves fast, states Daltons Wadkin – if one does not stop to look around once in a while, one could miss it. For those processing timber-based panels, composites, plastics, GRP, SIPs or non-ferrous metal, a range of Elcon vertical panel saws and Altendorf sliding table saws will be available for demonstration. Daltons Wadkin says more information will be available closer to the opening. Stay up to date by following Daltons Wadkin online. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering, continues his series of articles carried exclusively in Furniture & Joinery Production about rules, regulations and emissions from wood-burning equipment in the UK …
Know your limits and help reverse climate change “As a leading UK manufacturer of industrial woodfired boilers and heaters as well as industrial biomass fuelled boilers and heaters, as part of our continuous research and development programme we’re constantly striving to reduce emissions from all of our boilers and heaters,” says Chris. “Hardly a day goes past in the media without a mention of NOx and particulate – mainly in the form of particulate matter 2.5. These pollutants are present in fumes from diesel engines amongst other combustion processes. All industrial wood-fired boilers and heaters burning more than 90kg/hr require a permit to operate as a part B permit, but also an annual test by an accredited laboratory. “The following are typical results taken on a Ranheat 980kW installation which has been in service for eight years. Total particulate matter (TPM) was measured at 0.74mg/m3 against a limit of 60mg/m3. So, virtually all the harmful particulate has been removed. Carbon monoxide was at 20% of the limit, and NOx below 50% of the limit. “So how does Ranheat achieve such low limits? Years of experience by senior staff and bright young graduates with fresh concepts that are given the opportunity to implement their ideas. “In 2018, Ranheat extended its offices – with the benefit of match-funding from the EU and from being within an Enterprise Zone – and installed fast processing computers, all running AutoCad Inventor with full 3D modelling, plus three graduate engineers and a graduate software developer. “The building is known internally as the Kremlin (let’s face it, no-one knows what goes on inside the Kremlin!). But good ideas do come out – hence not just getting below the limits specified, but smashing the limits! The composition of the flue gases is a series of chemical reactions with the presence of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon, by controlling the

mixing and distribution of the fuel and air, and, with what we call the three Ts – temperature, time and turbulence – the chemical reactions can be controlled. “All Ranheat installations are automatically fed and have sophisticated control. Handloaded variants by other manufacturers don’t have flue gas filtration, automatic cleaning and monitoring of the flue gas quality – all of which is needed to obtain low emissions. Our aim is not just to meet the limits set, but to get as far below them as possible and still have a
commercially viable product. “Since the closing of the RHI in March this year, we have experienced a substantial increase in enquiries, with customers from outside the woodworking industry seeking to be net zero of carbon emissions by 2025 or 2030. We have always driven the use of woodwaste as a source of energy, and the use of on-site residues reduces emissions from transport, as well as replacing fossil fuels.” 01604 750005 www.ranheat.com

Planet Mark launches Zero Carbon Solutions to support businesses’ net zero journeys To amplify its partnership with the UN-backed Race to Zero global campaign, Planet Mark is introducing a suite of Zero Carbon Solutions, designed to demystify the area of net zero carbon emissions and assist businesses in committing to a target and creating an action plan so they are supported at all stages of their net zero journey. This critical period between 2020 and 2030, the Decade of Action, requires bold and ambitious commitments to tackle the climate crisis, which means shifting to net zero carbon. Net zero measures Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least -50% but ideally to zero, and Scope 3 by at least -50%, and balancing any residual Scope 3 emissions using carbon-removal schemes only.
The suite of Zero Carbon Solutions includes: Net zero essentials workshop This free, three-hour workshop is designed to help businesses feel confident in their first steps towards a net zero commitment. As well as introducing the concept of net zero, the workshop showcases why it is an urgent business priority.
Planet Mark net zero action plan Available to Planet Mark members, this programme offers business leaders the tools and knowledge to create a credible and robust net zero carbon action plan that is reviewed by its certification team. This is followed up with annual workshops to discuss progress against the action plan, encouraging continuous improvements. ZeroBy30 – Planet Mark’s ambitious programme to achieve net zero carbon by 2030 The ZeroBy30 programme goes beyond Planet Mark certification targets. It sets a pathway to absolute carbon reduction goals to reach net zero carbon by 2030 through a transformational action plan. Businesses will be supported by a multi-skilled team, which will develop the full solutions suite and roadmap needed to reduce their Scope 1 and 2 direct emissions to zero carbon (where feasible, and at minimum by -50%), Scope 3 indirect emissions by at least -50%, and corresponding impacts on annual cashflow and carbon. Amelie Trolle, head of engagement at Planet Mark, says: “No matter what stage a business is at on its net zero
journey, from setting a baseline to a target to creating the action plan needed to get there, Planet Mark is here to support the company all the way. We hope that by demystifying net zero and demonstrating how companies can take tangible actions and embark on their own zerocarbon journeys, more businesses will join us to create a brighter future for all.” www.planetmark.com
New annexe for solid timber production leads company to invest in second woodwaste heater A UK business which makes washroom cubicles and lockers has purchased a woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Total Cubical Solutions has a 18,000ft2 manufacturing base in Liverpool. MD Paul Ledsham started to look into purchasing a new woodwaste heater for the manufacturing workshop to save the company money on heating and waste disposal.
Paul says: “We were spending a fortune running oil-fired heaters in the cold winter months, so it made sense to investigate how we could utilise some of the waste wood generated from manufacture to feed a woodwaste heater. “As well as saving us money on heating bills, we’d also benefit financially from reduced waste removal costs by burning our waste wood instead of paying to have it taken away in skips. Burning waste instead of burning money on heating just made good business sense!” Total Cubicle Solutions purchased a WT15 heater from Wood Waste Technology last year, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s professional team. Paul says: “We’re delighted that all our waste wood can be used to create free heating for the workshop. “The investment in the heater has definitely been money well spent – I’d recommend any company in a similar situation to speak to Kurt and the team at Wood Waste Technology, as they really helped us find the best solution for our business.” Wood Waste Technology’s MD, Kurt
Cockroft, says: “We’ve been delighted to help Total Cubicle Solutions save money on its operational costs and help make the workshop a warmer place for its 20 employees. “Companies are often amazed how much money they can save by investing in a woodwaste heater, and impressed by the return on investment, which can take less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in woodwaste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of woodwaste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to -60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

80 UPDATES
After what feels like an eternity of restricted face-to-face interaction, and with no industry platform since 2019, the FIT Show 2021 is officially coming home, states the event’s organiser …
FIT Show 2021 preview FIT Show is the UK’s leading, award-winning showcase for the glass, glazing, window, door, hardware and components industry. It will return to the NEC from 26-28th September 2021, marking the first industry event to bring the industry back together since the start of the pandemic. The industry is facing unprecedented challenges, with demand outstripping supply, rising costs and ongoing supply chain issues. FIT Show will deliver a platform for the industry to tackle these issues head on, meet with suppliers face to face, and start planning ahead with certainty. FIT Show in September will come at a crucial time for the industry. Why visit? It’s free! It sounds simple, but lots of people don’t realise that attending FIT Show is completely free. We don’t charge visitors to enter the show – all you need to do is get yourself to the NEC between Sunday 26th and Tuesday 28th September. We’ll do the rest. This is your free ticket to see over 200 of the industry’s leading brands, showcasing the latest products on the market for the first time since 2019. What more of an incentive do you need? Sunday opening You asked, we listened. We know that the last 12 months have been a slog. With bulging order books and supply chain issues, time is precious. And that’s why we’re opening on Sunday for the first time ever – no need to disrupt your week or take time off the tools to visit. It’s time to start planning ahead.
Get yourself ahead of the competition by comparing the latest products on the market, side by side, at FIT Show. New, new, new! There’s a theme here. As well as lots of new and exciting show features, such as our Outdoor Living feature, with products and accessories to complement your portfolio, there’s also lots of new brands. These are brands who have launched since our last event in 2019, or who are dipping their toe into FIT Show water for the first time. In fact, over 40% of our exhibitors are brands that you will never have seen at FIT Show before, such as UK Doors Online, Rockdoor, Wendland Exlabesa, Solar Calibre, Storm Building Products, TIMCO and Adminbase. FIT Show stalwarts such as VEKA, Ultraframe, Haffner Murat, Kommerling, Renson, Korniche, Camden Group, Business Pilot, Victorian Sliders, Roseview Windows, DOORCO, Morley Glass and Hormann UK are all set to have a prominent presence. Late Night Monday If a Sunday visit isn’t an option for you, and you’re struggling to find time on the Tuesday, we will be running Late Night Monday. You can visit FIT Show after a full day on the tools or in the office, with the doors open until 8pm. As well as being able to see all of the latest products on offer, you’ll be able to enjoy a party-style environment, with lots of our exhibitors putting on entertainment and refreshments for visitors to their stands. It’s a win-win.
