t’s the Year of the Dragon. In Chinese astrology the dragon is a symbol of good fortune and intense power, which means 2012 promises to be incredible. We are pleased to present our first issue of the year, with cover girl Alexis Knapp. The actress with the piercing blue eyes, ex-girlfriend of Ryan Phillippe, has three movies coming up. Looking forward to seeing her on the big screen. I love living in California! I especially enjoy springtime. It’s all about renewal, rebirth, regrowth and, let’s not forget, new collections! So my question is, what are you all wearing this season? If you don’t have a clue yet, don’t panic. Just flip through the pages of this issue and the next one to see the key trends. It’s going to be a colorful summer, so leave behind the grays, blacks and navys. Be on the lookout for a radiant palette of sapphire, emerald, topaz, garnet and coral garments, accessories, even home décor and cosmetics. One of the dominant colors this season is Tangerine Tango or, as we like to call it, Orange Sanguine. Check out the romantic long orange dress by Alberta Ferretti and you’ll be standing out from the crowd. Not sure about the entire outfit? Then start with your feet and try on the gorgeous Charlotte Olympia Daryl peep-toes. They will make you feel tall and self-assured. (p.106) Another big trend is the tropical print: Stella McCartney’s Hawaiian-print
24 GENLUX SPRING I 2012
T-shirt will look gorge paired with a mini skirt and flats or flared light blue wash jeans and wedges. (p.110) Barbara Bui’s accessories collection is quite fabulous. I have my eyes on the Dude flashy multicolored python bowling bag with gri-gri. I just want to stare at it, imagining that somehow it may find its way to me. Or I’ll just have to get it on my next trip to Paris. As for jewelry, Chopard has won my heart with the dazzling Temptations ring, representative of the Chopard style, thanks to its heart-shaped cut. Simply magnificent! (p.30) The town right now is in an effervescent mode: we’re in the middle of awards season. I’m really looking forward to watching the most glamorous awards of them all, the 84th Annual Academy Awards. It will be a unique fashion moment in Hollywood—maybe the most important one! The world is watching to see what its favorite actresses will be wearing. Stylists are visiting every showroom in town, making sure their glamorous clients will be photographed wearing the perfect dress on the red carpet. No stylist or actress want to wake up the next morning and see themselves in the paper on the Worst Dressed List…or far worse, being ridiculed by Joan Rivers on Fashion Police. Oops! I’ll be watching! Bisous à tous!

“I
wish I were Japanese,” confesses actress Alexis Knapp, as we sit at a corner table of the dimly lit Artichoke’s Heart restaurant—the new hotspot in West Hollywood. Her iPhone chimes and she thumbs away a quick text before politely shutting it off (a die-hard PC girl, she recently defected to enter the Apple world. She has no idea, she’s never going back). She’s sporting a cool pair of G-Star Raw jeans and a cute Valentino bow-sleeve stretch cotton shirt. On her rail-thin wrist is a Michele Deco diamond watch. Alexis’s stunning beauty is the result of her multicultural makeup. On her mom’s side, she’s Cuban, Ecuadorian, and Inca Indian; and on her dad’s, she’s Native American, French, German, and Scottish. Which, of course, all boils down to her wanting to be one thing: Japanese. “I have such a desire to be Japanese. I always have,” she says convincingly. “I have a weird obsession with Japanese culture and with Japanese anime. It began when I was twelve, and watched Spirited Away, Hayao Miyazaki’s anime film. Miyazaki is the godfather of anime films. I fell in love with his movies. Then I got into Japanese anime like Bleach and Inuyasha.” Alexis grew up in North Carolina, where her mom encouraged her to sing, dance, and to learn the piano, flute, and violin. In her teens, she studied with the American Ballet Theater, which is where, naturally, she first learned Japanese. “Half the student body was Japanese. I befriended them and began learning the language. They’re so reserved and so quiet and polite, so to make them giggle I would ask them how to say really provocative things like...[leans in] penis.” Despite having given birth to her first child only six months ago, Alexis already fits back into her size-2 dresses, and though she’s never publicly confirmed it until now, she shares with Genlux that her baby girl, Kailani, is indeed the daughter of her ex-boyfriend, actor Ryan Phillippe. The two dated for a year. Still, Ryan was there at her side during the birth. “Life’s gotten so much better since Kai came along. I feel like I’ve made my purpose. I created life. It’s
what my biological purpose is. Just waking up to that beautiful face every day makes my day.” For the past year, the admittedly independent Alexis checked herself out of the Hollywood scene to focus on her baby, but the 5’-8” beauty is ready to start dating again. “I’m just now getting to the point where I’m ready to begin a new relationship. I was nowhere near emotionally ready to enter into something new. I needed to be self-fulfilled first. When you try to fill the void with other people, you’ll never be fulfilled. Your own happiness has to come from you.” Part of that fulfillment comes from her passion for acting. The young actress has three films coming out soon, including Project X, the highly anticipated film from producer Todd Phillips, who directed The Hangover. Our server brings out a large grilled octopus tentacle, one of the specialties of the house, and Alexis doesn’t flinch. Not surprising, when you hear that her pets are an albino Columbian Suriname Red-tailed Boa snake, and a red Italian leather translucent bearded dragon. She takes a bite of the octopus and shouts, “This is delicious, holy moly!” Naturally, Alexis’s favorite restaurants are all Japanese. “I’m obsessed with Udon noodles. I love sushi. I love smelt egg. The only thing I won’t eat is Uni. It tastes like brains dropped in dirt.” She loves Matsuhisa on La Cienega, but her best-kept secrets are both hidden in little Hollywood malls. Kura Sushi is at Crescent Heights and Sunset, and the other is Shintaro at Franklin and Highland. “Shintaro always plays great old Japanese films and the sushi guy there is the best in the city.” Believe it or not, if she weren’t an actress, Alexis would have wanted to be an astronaut, and hopes that Kailani will gravitate toward the sciences. “I want my daughter to be an astrobiologist. It’s like my mom, who put me on the path to the arts. And it worked.” Good job, mom! So how does Alexis feel about being on our cover? “It’s the best! I was so excited to hear I’d be shooting for Genlux. But next time, can we please shoot in Japan?”

A
ctress Leven Rambin nestles into one of the cushy chairs at the Café Luxe that perch right on Rodeo Drive and orders an iced tea with no ice. She’s wearing some Van shorts, a pair of high-top Chuck Taylors, and something she slept in the night before—for which I thank her for dressing up for our interview. On her right leg, she’s sporting one gnarly gash. “I was surfing and slipped on these rocks and cut my leg up. Yeah,” she says again, surveying the damage. “It’s pretty bad.” Her new real life as a surfer girl began only six months ago when the naturally blonde former Texan was working on the film Mavericks. The movie stars Gerard Butler, and the monstrous sixty-foot waves that swallow surfers in Santa Cruz. “You have to be a bit of a psychopath to ride these,” Leven warns. “If you fall, it’s literally like falling off a building onto concrete, and then you drown.” The producers hired legendary California surfer Ashley Lloyd to school Leven, and even though filming ended, Leven’s love for the sport didn’t. “Next week, I leave for El Salvador on a surf trip and to build a high school there. It’s a getaway for a charity called Surf for Life.” Leven’s next ride may be an even wilder one. The 23-year-old, who, between age 14 and 18, cut her teeth playing an autistic child on All My Children, is about to embark on one of those Harry Potter–type blockbuster teens-in-a-crazed-frenzy trilogies playing the role of Glimmer in the much-anticipated movie T he Hunger Games. To the premiere on March 23, she plans to wear something really chic. “Like the beautiful Valentino gown from our shoot! I think it was hand-sewn silver over chiffon. I love it!” This leads to Leven sharing her most embarrassing red-carpet moment. “I was
sixteen and living in New York. I wore this misguided yellow silk halter-top with tuxedo pants. I thought it was super-chic and super-sexy and sleek, but it was so not cute. So I’m on the red carpet and I owned it and I worked it, and now I still can’t live it down. It was not my personality, and it came off a little slutty. And, oh yeah, I got a lashing from my agent, the fashion press, and my mother.” What her mom is happy about is that Leven survived that auto crash about a year ago. “I got T-boned, flipped twice, and landed upside down in my first car, a Nissan Rogue. The other guy was speeding in a Honda and I was crossing the intersection. He hit me with enough force to flip me twice. I remember screaming in my mind, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!’ I was thinking I’m dead. My heart was racing, my mind was screaming, but I felt this peace in my soul. I felt like I was going to die, but oddly, I was okay with it. I fell out of my driver’s seat and landed in the passenger seat upside down, pinned by two airbags. I opened the door upside down and got out of the car. I was wearing a dress and heels and was glistening from the broken glass, but had no broken bones. I felt God’s hands were protecting me—like I was being held. I felt safe.” Leven’s voice thins. “It was pathetic that it took a near tragedy for me to wake up to God’s involvement in my life. God was present in the whole thing, and I’m superconnected to Him.” Given the opportunity to be anyone, Leven lets her committee decide. “I’d be Wonder Woman. My friends always send me photos of Wonder Woman. They say, ‘This is you, this is you!’” And after seeing the photo of that car she walked away from, who could argue?

78 GENLUX SPRING I 2012
O
n a grey and chilly morning, our Genlux glam team is busy at work on actress Maggie Grace. She’s the tall, exquisite actress with the milliondollar legs, best known for playing Shannon Rutherford on the hit television series Lost, for which she and the other members of the ensemble cast each sport a Screen Actors Guild award on their mantels. Maggie hits the set, looking the archetype of Hollywood glam in her new dark tresses, gracefully playing up to Erik’s camera. She has done this before, and is completely at ease. Over the next few hours, hundreds of beautiful images pop up on the Apple monitor, soon to be edited down and polished up to a perfected few. When the day is over, Maggie and I duck into the Smashbox Studios lounge where she tells me in a soft, humble voice, “I was always lost in books and very active in the Drama Club”. She goes on to explain “Growing up in Ohio, I longed to travel but I come from a middle-class Midwestern family and I never thought my life would be like this, I mean I am pinching myself !” And this girl has every reason to feel grateful and excited about her life. Maggie has four films coming out this year alone, including the highly anticipated scifi thriller Lock-Out with Guy Pearce launching on April 20th. She also repeats her role as Irina in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. Maggie’s glammed-up look for today’s shoot contrasts her everyday casual, green-girl lifestyle. “I just wish things weren’t so appearance-driven here. I’m usually dressed in khakis and flip-flops, with no makeup at all. Instead of driving, I ride my bike everywhere. I have a basket on the handlebars, and do my grocery shopping this way too. I have a geeky purple bicycle helmet that my friends all make fun of, and neon Velcro straps
By Lisa Wayne
to hold my pant legs in. I choose to live by the beach where it’s more laid back.” Maggie positively lights up when sharing her formula for staying grounded in a city where it’s easy for movie stars to lose their heads in the clouds. “I have one wonderful group of girlfriends that I spend a lot of time with. We all met while we were shooting together in Hawaii in 2004, and we’ve remained very close. We make big brunches and hike and just hang out. I am so proud of all of them; they’re all pretty successful in the industry— really kick-ass women! They’re my support group.” Likewise, despite her constant travels, she values her family time. “I recently shot a film in Istanbul and met up with my family there for Thanksgiving. We are very close and try to spend all of the holidays together. The year before, I was filming in Rome and we all spent Christmas together there. Speaking of my family, my dad just biked all the way across the country by himself ! And my brother is buying a sailboat and is going to be living abroad—he wants to sail around the world.” When it comes to giving back, Maggie waxes passionate about helping our planet and about Global Green USA, the group dear to her heart. “It’s about baby steps. If everyone would make the smallest change to their daily routine, we would see such a difference. It’s cumulative and it all helps.” Then she gives us all some directives: “For instance, use canvas bags instead of plastic, canteens instead of water bottles, and air-dry your clothes whenever possible. The dryer uses more electricity than any other appliance! And learn to cook a few meatless meals. That can all go a long way toward helping the planet.”

In Los Angeles, where it feels like summer all year round, I feel as if I’m on top of the world. Last week, at the BAFTAs tea party, I was told by someone that I resembled Marilyn Monroe, while another asked for my views on winning a Golden Globe. How wonderful is that? I am, however, changing into a new woman by adding champagne and white to my predominately black wardrobe. I feel lighter already. EDITOR AT LARGE—GEORGE BLODWELL 2012 Lincoln MKX, starting at $40,290 MSRP, lincoln.com
As this new year gets us ready for spring, I wanted to say to all our readers that I wish you a wonderful year, full of enjoyment. Be good to yourself and celebrate your days, thankful that you’re kicking and breathing. As always, trends come and go, but luxury and style? Well, you either have it or you don’t. It’s not so difficult, even on a budget, to enjoy luxury. To me, luxury is also a state of mind. Go pick up something classic and luxurious. Great fabrics and workmanship will last and last and will also enhance your image. Treat yourself ! My first tip of this year is Arc jeans by G-Star Raw—I even got myself a pair. They have a great cut and look about them. For me to actually be enthusiastic about a pair of jeans is surprising, so consider checking out G-Star Raw. The brand recently opened a store on Rodeo Drive. I have to smile to myself when I review the spring offerings. There’s a strong presence of light colors and lots of
white, beige, and light grey. I find it ironic that the fashion capitals New York, Paris, Milan, and London are relatively grimy, so wearing white is perilous and costly. But for us in California, we can easily pull of this saintly look. After all, this is car-land, so we can step out in our white and not have to be too concerned. Add a dash of color with a little polka-dot pocket square or great summer scarf. You’ll look marvelous. Talking about luxury, white, and cars, I am compelled to tell you about the new Lincoln crossover vehicle, the MKX. Wow! Luxurious, elegant, good mileage, and powerful. The hi-tech gadgetry was so easy to grasp and made every trip a joy. I drove one around town for a couple of weeks, and was left with the desire to get my own asap. I loved this ride. I loved the look, felt safe, comfortable, and—may I say it—elegant and luxurious. Enjoy it all! Love, George

GO FOR THE GOLD Make waves with golden curves. Shimmering metal with interesting forms polishes off these lavish offerings for your home. As SHERRYL WHITE finds, now is the perfect time to invest in gold. 1) Milukan chair by Christian Astuguevielle: This French designer weaves his otherworldly artistic expression in a variety of milieux. Astuguevielle is the mastermind who constructs the notes in Comme des Garçons fragrances; he has created for Hermès, Nina Ricci and other venerable design houses. He has become known for adapting rope and sculpting it into sinuous structures that elevate the material to collectible status. This flowing chair wound together with metallic gold cord seems to move as if it were balancing along a wave—effortlessly following the bends of the deep sea. 2) Roland carafe and tumbler by Theresienthal: Inventive designer Christian Haas re-interprets a 100-year-old classic. His update of the luxurious carafe and tumbler includes gold encrustations, vertically mirrored engravings, and sublime images of animal life. Whatever your poison, this set offers a thoroughly modern way to toast to the future. 3) Eric Schmitt Hill Vase: Bronze has been artfully molded around handblown Bohemian glass to create a vase worthy of showing off nature’s bounty. Effortless beauty this elegant is worth its weight in gold. 4) Mnemos Pillbox: This container receives its moniker in honor of the Greek Goddess of remembrance. Recalling the era of snuff boxes, which were popular among the upper classes in the 18th century, American architects Asymptote introduce a new audience to the decorative box.
5) Lustre Astrolab hanging light by Hervé Van Der Straeten: Lyrical coils form loops of masterfully manipulated hand-wrought bronze on this chandelier. The dramatic interlocking links and rock crystals dangling from its edge are reminiscent of a necklace, which is befitting the designer’s pedigree. Van Der Straeten began his career producing jewelry for the likes of Yves Saint Laurent and Jean Paul Gaultier. This intriguing light is a fashionable accessory for the home. 6) Eric Schmitt coffee table: The fluid silhouette of this table evokes images of a bygone era in furniture making. The generosity and elegance of its curves bring to mind Old Hollywood, and echo a time when metals were shaped by hand rather than machines. Composed of two tables nested together and fashioned from bronze both blackened and finished in a gold patina, this table magnificently brings together the past and the present. 7) Rio Crocodillo by Flavor Paper: Flavor Paper prides itself on delivering the tastiest wallpaper in all the land. Inside the walls of their “Flavor Lab,” custom colors are concocted, and spirited patterns are screened and etched. Their bespoke offerings include this vivacious metallic print, which is sure to add an exotic flair to any wall.

ARE YOU LOVE CRAZY? BY ALMIE ROSE
W
hen do you finally reach that point in a relationship where you’re no longer afraid that your boyfriend/girlfriend is suddenly going to break up with you? Or is that just me? I’m in the most stable relationship I’ve ever been in, but every once in a while I’ll seize with panic and think,“Today is the day. He is definitely going to break up with me.” It’s never based on logic or reason, it’s just my raging insecurity bubbling to the surface.
It’s kind of like the fear some people have about earthquakes in Los Angeles. They’ll predict them for reasons like, “My corgi has been acting strange.” People say that relationships are based on trust, and that communication is the best foundation, but sometimes I wonder if maybe there’s a fault in that. Is there such a thing as too much trust? Too much communication? Should you really tell your partner everything? I’m not talking about lying, I’m talking about those times when you’re freaking out over something trivial like a mean comment someone left you at work, and you’re blowing it out of proportion, and you know you’re being a crazy person. Is that something you really need to subject your partner to? I think you have to choose carefully what you want to share, and here’s why: women are burdened with the ‘crazy’ label that men don’t seem to be saddled with. When we’re emotional we’re called ‘crazy’ without hesitation. And ironically, worrying about being called crazy is what makes us crazy. And this is a hard cycle to break. Because the more worried you are that you’re crazy, the crazier you get, and the more certain you are that your boyfriend/girlfriend is going to look at you and realize, “My God, I’m dating a crazy person and this has to end right now.” But you can’t tell them that, because that is the ultimate confirmation of craziness. So. Is there a point where you reach real comfort and secu-
rity, where you know you’re both in it to win it and neither one of you is going to turn crazy or shut down? Time doesn’t ensure anything; couples together for decades break up seemingly out of nowhere. How do you know it won’t happen to you? But enough with bumming you out. I feel stability in my relationship because I do have those moments where I let stress take over, and I cry, and yet he didn’t run away. We have inside jokes that are meaningful to us and occasionally annoy our friends. There is a sense of unity there, and most of the time, it assures me that no matter what breakdowns I have, he’ll be there. In that moment I feel like we are truly a couple. And I try not to let everything out—not so much for him, but for my own sanity. Because when we focus on the negative, all we do is produce more negativity. So maybe that’s when you feel strong in your relationship—by focusing on the positive and letting go of the negative. You open up to each other without freaking out. And most of all, you relax. What you fear, you create. Just have fun. Remember fun? Fun is awesome! Fun keeps crazy at bay. And it’s okay to have your crazy moments. To quote Norman Bates, “We all go a little mad sometimes.” Maybe quoting the lead character from Psycho isn’t the best example, but you gotta see his point. Just make sure you keep the crazy under control, stay secure, and keep the murdering people in the shower to a minimum. That’s just not a nice thing to do.

WHY HE CAN’T COMMIT BY KAM HESKIN
ids believe in the tooth fairy, women believe in chocolate, and men believe in underwear models. It’s this belief that causes many a man to fear being locked down—because an elusive underwear model might show up and want to have sex with him. In his mind, he’s fairly certain this is going to happen. God forbid he’s unprepared by being in a relationship. Committing might mean he’d miss something else out there, a.k.a. the Bigger Better Deal or Younger Hotter Deal (whatever). Of course, not all men are like this. Some have great character, but it’s more fun to talk about the ones who don’t. From a young age men are taught to appreciate women. We see this in their Playboy subscriptions and their worship of high-school cheerleaders. The scantily clad nymph has always been an alluring figure to the male libido, whereas scantily clad dancing males don’t seem to have the same effect on women. According to scientists, we know that men are more visual creatures and women get turned on by romantic literature. But somewhere the line is crossed into making men hesitant to commit. It’s the fear of missing out on the unknown female, or as I like to call her, the elusive underwear model. So is this underwear model really the answer to their dreams or an answer to their hormones? Yes, biology dictates breeding with the best option. This may occasionally qualify as a Laker Girl, but perhaps Mother Nature intended more for the human union than just sex. Maybe, say, an intelligent, caring mother to her children or an understanding, supporting partner. Human offspring gestate for close to 18 years, and guess what: they need someone to be there for them. It appears there are more qualifications to a partnership than being young or hot. There are many considerations a man must make between committing to a real woman and being free for the elusive underwear model. For example, with a real woman, he has to attend to her still being there in the morning. She might want breakfast, even though she’d cook it for both of them.
96 GENLUX SPRING I 2012
Underwear models don’t eat breakfast; they merely roll off to a day of castings for horny photographers. In a real relationship, he has cumbersome responsibilities, accountabilities, birth control…you know, all those scary words that hold a man down. A real woman travels to IKEA with him and helps him pick out inexpensive furniture. The underwear model just needs a bear rug and a fireplace, which is the cheapest option but gives you little to sit on for dinner parties. A guy sometimes has to visit with a real woman’s parents. But the elusive underwear model doesn’t have parents—she comes to Earth by way of wings attached to her push-up bra, so he never has to make idle conversation with his in-laws about the weather. And, when he is sick, the real woman will make him soup. The underwear model lies around in her lingerie (which, by the way, does nothing for a sore throat). A friend asked me, “Why would a man settle down when there are so many beautiful women in the world?” Well, why would a woman settle down when there are so many men willing and able to have sex with her? Doesn’t a woman have an easier time picking up a man in a bar than a man does picking up a woman? Perhaps, but our female instincts dictate otherwise. Maybe in the end, we all want to find that ideal partner, teammate, and lover. We are still two halves of a whole, and that remains Mother Nature’s grand design.

WINE GUY
GENLUXSHOP New World Order: Australian vintners have found New World finesse with Old World grapes.
G’Day, USA: Our Genlux wine expert JEFF LIPSMAN gives the thumbs-up to some great wines from down under.
Occam’s Razor: An astoundingly good Shiraz, drinking exceptionally well right now. Try with grilled lamb or a sizzling steak.
Australian wines are experiencing a bit of a renaissance. I recently had the opportunity to taste through 80 Aussie wines from over 20 growing regions. Two things stood out, and both are positive for the consumer.
F
irst, the wine regions of Australia are producing wines that better reflect the individual characteristics of their locale —what the French call terroir. The French have spent centuries observing that certain grapes work better in some soils and micro-climates than others. The Australian locales are now producing some really terrific wines from grapes better suited to their own microclimates, and they go well beyond the old tyranny of Shiraz and Chardonnay. Second, these districts are producing wines with finesse, grace and style. The big, boisterous and highly alcoholic wines that put Australia on every oenophile’s map are still available, but the new offerings include some adroitly crafted bottlings that show delicacy and balance in classic styles with lower alcohol. This is a big win for consumers, and the prices are budget-friendly too. Listed here are some of the best new tipples from down under.

MY FAVORITE AUSSIE WHITES Yalumba Y Series Riesling 2009, South Australia, $12.99. A delicious light Riesling showing good delineation of flavors and spice with only 11% alcohol, a great wine to enjoy with spicy food like Chinese take-out. Mesh Riesling 2008 Eden Valley, $24.99. A Riesling built in the classic style showing citrus, lemon zest, lime, and a bit of classic petrol that the Europeans now refer to as “minerality,” 13% alcohol. St. Hallett Eden Valley Riesling 2010 Eden Valley, $15.99. Another terrific Riesling showing prominent minerality, with a fresh bite backed by citrus, all in a light-bodied warm-weather quaffer. Brokenwood Semillon 2010 Hunter Valley, $18.99. A sharp, clean wine with pure, delineated flavors of citrus and grapefruit, all in a mouthwatering blend just begging to be served with fresh oysters on the half shell—my favorite white wine of the evening.
Summer Sippers: These Aussie whites are perfect for light meals, warm days, and gentle breezes.
MY FAVORITE AUSSIE REDS Wakefield Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 Claire Valley, $16.99. Lots of fruit here with tart black cherries, strawberries and blackberries, all backed by good acidity, giving it backbone while keeping it fresh. Chapel Hill Bush Vine Grenache 2010, McLaren Vale, $27. Old-school Rhone varietal with 15% alcohol, laden with boysenberry jam, pepper, and the scent of tar in a silky smooth, full-bodied fruit bomb. Jasper Hill Occam’s Razor Shiraz 2006, Heathcote, $38. Absolutely classic Shiraz denoted by white pepper, raw meat, asphalt, and saddle leather with a long-lasting flavor. A big wine and a terrific effort—my favorite of the evening. Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Shiraz 2002, Grampians, $44. Another classic Shiraz showing spicy white pepper, tar, and plums, all balanced by good acidity—a mouthwatering Shiraz from biodynamic farming practices.
Samia Arslane jets over to the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London for a round of shopping, soothing spa treatments, and spot of high tea, or...could you make that a Champagne, please?
O
n my first trip to London, I remember being overwhelmed with excitement. I was 14, and visiting with my school from our hometown of Metz in northeast France. Since then, I’ve visited the British capital at least a hundred times, and each time I feel the same exhilaration and love as that first experience. My dear cousins Sofia and Soraya live there, so I have every reason to visit. Like me, Sofia works in the fashion industry— she’s a personal shopper for high-profile clients at Louis Vuitton. Last month, I had the privilege of staying at one of London’s most distinguished hotels—the sumptuous Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park. Cocooned in the middle of Knightsbridge and surrounded by the most luxurious designer boutiques, the hotel has a highly fashionable address. The humongous façade is intimidating at first, but the friendly doormen with their gracious, welcoming smiles, make you feel so comfortable. Sofia’s workplace was literally only two blocks away, so she stayed with me. We shared a gorgeous and spacious suite with two large windows on each side of the cozy bed that let the light come right through every morning. We had a fascinating view of beautiful buildings, rooftops, and the London Eye, the giant observation wheel. Right across the street was one of my favorite department stores, Harvey Nichols. Let’s just say I visited that gorgeous establishment one too many times (my credit cards could barely handle the shopping spree). At the crack of dawn, breakfast was served downstairs at one of the wonderful restaurants. Every day I enjoyed a different smoothie made with the freshest ingredients. My favorite had coconut. One morning I was lucky enough to observe the horse guards’ parade. I was mesmerized! In the afternoon we strolled the streets of Knightsbridge, just walking distance from Harrods. Surprisingly, it was the food court that we enjoyed the most. It’s extremely clean, and the amount

of food from every corner of the world is insane. Whatever you desire to eat, you will find it! One afternoon, after a long day of shopping, our feet in pain, we went back to our hotel, handed our shopping bags to the helpful doormen, and proceeded to the restaurant for high tea. Those plans were quickly dashed and we opted to visit the stylish bar instead. A glass of Champagne seemed a better choice. Of course, the day would not end right without a massage at the world’s leading spa. I recommend arriving a half hour before your treatment so you can enjoy the wonderful Heat & Water Oasis. On our last evening, we made a reservation at Bar Boulud, and indulged ourselves in delicious authentic French cuisine. As soon as we sat down, we felt transported back to Paris, savoring charcuteries and other delicacies served only in bistros. The experience is unbelievable. The hotel is known not only for its impeccable restaurants but also for its affinity for fashion. Recently, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and Christian Louboutin joined forces to create the ‘Paint the Town Red’ package: the ultimate treat—shoe shopping, Champagne, a stay at the iconic five-star hotel, manicures and pedicures, and lunch in London’s hottest restaurant. What more could a girl ask for? So many exciting events are taking place there this year. To start, it will host the Summer Olympics. And in June, London will celebrate sixty years of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. In honor of this fabulous event, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park invites guests to commemorate the occasion with a unique four-day Diamond Jubilee Tour that takes place June 2–6, 2012. On your next visit to London, I highly recommend the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park—the ultimate luxurious British experience. I heard someone using Mandarin as a verb, saying that once you stay there you’ll be Mandarinized. It’s true. Once you stay there it’s the only hotel you’ll ever want to visit.

GENLUXSHOP Recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer, travel editor Tracy O’Connor shares her personal battle and her recent wellness retreat to the Golden Door in Escondido.
A
few weeks ago, I got a call. What had started as a routine trip to the doctor was followed by a series of appointments where my thyroid was felt up, rubbed down, poked at and biopsied. (It had seen more action in a few weeks than I had all year.) Now the caller was informing me that I had thyroid cancer. For those unfamiliar, the thyroid is a wrinkly, butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that hugs the trachea. It helps our body make energy, regulates body temperature, and heavily assists in healthy organ function. If you know about cars (I do not), I’ve been told it’s like the carburetor. In other words, it’s really important. My best option was laid out in front of me: removal of the thyroid followed by a pill every day for the rest of my life. I felt blessed that it was curable and that the outlook was sunny, but I couldn’t help feeling distraught at the thought of losing my thyroid. Until now, we’d had a perfect relationship. Even more, I was not a pill-popper. My current migraine regimen consisted of a warm bath, hot tea, candlelight and an Enya album on repeat. What, if any, were my alternatives? Did I have to send my thyroid packing or could my body heal itself ? People do it. Websites and blogs share anecdotes. Books on the New York Times best-seller list champion the cause of self-healing. I couldn’t help but wonder: did the alternatives offer hope, or were they just hype? The alternatives are vast—some credible, others confusing, some outrageous, others supported by science. There’s Eastern medicine, Ayurveda, homeopathy, meditation, cancer cleanses, alkaline diets, extreme juicing, shots you can do, supplements you can take, exercises you can perform, masks you can wear, and machines you can get into. Truthfully, you can really go down the rabbit hole on this one. I was on information overload. I not only had cancer, and felt guilty for getting it (yep, seriously), but now, I had the added pressure to cure myself. Then I heard about the Golden Door retreat in Escondido—a seven-day wellness sanctuary founded in 1958 by Deborah Szekely, and known as one of the most innovative and transformative health and well-being luxury retreats in the world. I decided to give it a try. The Golden Door is a sacred ceremonial place cared for by a warm-hearted staff. It is designed in style and

spirit after the ancient Japanese Honjin inns and based on the principles of perfect comfort and caretaking. Indeed, I felt the love. My room was resplendent: a bell garden in front, amidst a small deciduous forest and a babbling brook beside me. At dinner, I met the other Women’s Wellness week guests, who ranged in age from 22 to 82. A week at the Golden Door is a pure, unadulterated opportunity for joy and growth. You have a personal ambassador and a fitness counselor who help design your seven-day retreat. Chefs Martha Shissler and Curtis Cooke prepare the healthy meals with love and detail. With a staff-to-guest ratio of 4 to 1, when you merely think of something you need, it’s magically there. The experience is designed to carry you beyond relaxation and into an energetic state of clarity and bliss. Each day there is a large selection of classes and private sessions. For me, each activity was medicine. There is a bounty of options to explore—like Disneyland for the freespirited wellness devotee. A customized daily schedule is created for you and your goal—be it weight loss, relaxation, mental health or renewed vitality. Activities are designed around nutrition, inner focus or strength training. Others involve gentle motion, spa relaxation and rejuvenation. Meals were a time for camaraderie, connection, and spontaneous counsel. My days started at 5:45 with Nick, our handsome hiking guide. If you have to wake up at dawn, Nick isn’t bad to wake up to. Turns out, dawn is beautiful. We hiked beneath the full moon exalted in a pastel sky. On the way up, I hiked solo, and on the way down, I talked with Bettie, who’d been to the Door more than 20 times. It was a home she cherished, a place she honored. As we passed the organic garden, she said to me, “‘There’s one thing you know for sure,’ my grandfather always said. ‘The wind blows through everyone’s house and you’re never alone.’” The Golden Door has a golden goal: to help resurrect in us the freedom, peace, hope and courage we are born with. To calm the spirit, strengthen the body and inspire the mind. I explored Qi Gong, restorative yoga, swim classes and dance. I spent time in the bath house, time with guests and by myself. My favorite class was—don’t laugh—hula-hoop dance. We were sashaying our hips to what I always thought was a toy, and what turns out is a talisman to Ch’i. There was a mysterious alchemy of all the offerings—not what the doctor ordered, but just what I needed. On the final evening, Deborah Szekely joined us for dinner. She spoke about her grandchildren and dropped a pearl of wisdom: “If the phone is off the hook, how are you ever going to get the message?” At the Door, I put the phone back on the hook. Cancer was calling and had a message for me. The message wasn’t about illness, but rather, was an invitation to change, a challenge to really live. Ironically, it often takes being out of our comfort zones to truly get into real ones. The Golden Door inspires happiness and gives you the tools to continue blazing that trail, despite the obstacles life presents. I have a journey ahead of peaceful decision-making and life in action. Now if only I could take that handsome hiking guide with me.

BREAKING DAWN When Dawn Olivieri was little she had dreams of becoming a veterinarian, but rapidly changed her mind when she realized that acting was her true passion. One day she decided to pack her bag and drive all the way from Florida (where she’s from) to Tinseltown to be an actor. That was it! There was no plan B. After numerous appearances in many sitcoms, this stunning beauty finally landed a starring role opposite Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell in the Showtime series House of Lies. She’s currently filming a movie which will be in theaters later this year. Grounded and talented, this little lady knows exactly what she wants. WHAT ICONIC RED-CARPET LOOKS INSPIRE YOU? I always love when a woman appears on the carpet and there’s a WOW moment for anyone who sees her. - Audrey Hepburn, Oscars 1954: the epitome of classic beauty. Everyone still references her when wanting a classic chic look. - Penelope Cruz in blush feathers, Oscars 2007: hair swept back, all about brows, smoky eyes and lashes, and a gorgeous pinky nude
The whole look centers around the dress. What’s the color palette? What’s the vibe of the dress? Jewels and shoes also play a role. Everything needs to be harmonious. Also, the makeup and hair need to not compete with each other!
Clarins Brow Defining kit, $35, Bloomingdale’s at Westfield Century City, LA, 310-772-2100
My most recent favorite is Julianne Moore from this year’s Golden Globes. The makeup was Sharon Tate–inspired: elongated smoky eyes with a pale lid, lots of lash and a pale lip. Key products are Clarins Brow Defining kit (I love these matte shadows for defining the eye; I used the taupe and the soft black), liquid liner, and lots of black mascara! Another favorite is Naomi Watts at the J. Edgar premiere. This was a rich berry lipstick with a soft pewter defined eye. The makeup was lush and very ‘expensive’ looking: Clarins Eye Quartet Mineral Palette in Graphites and Rouge Prodige True Colour, and Shine Lipstick in Blackberry. Another all-time favorite is Kate Bosworth at the Met Ball a few years ago. This was classic Old Hollywood with a very strong statement: red lips, well-defined brows, and skin that looked retouched, it was so perfect. Clarins Rouge Prodige in Red Prodige is the perfect rich red to mimic this look. Foundation that gives the skin a glow, like Clarins Skin Illusion, is also key. 1. THE TIMELESS HALF UP-DO! This “half ” up-do is a timeless look that complements any woman. To achieve this romantic cascade of curls: 1. Spray your entire head with a texturizer spray, scrunching it for even distribution. 2. Begin blowdrying, using small sections, and use a medium round brush, making sure to bump the ends under. 3. To create “ribbon curls” use a flat iron, taking medium-size V-shaped sections. Wrap the hair around and inside the styling iron, close to the scalp area, and pull the iron down (similar to curling ribbon). 4. After curling the entire head, smooth the curls with your fingers. 5. At the crown area, back-brush the hair at the scalp area only, then use hairspray and gently smooth the surface so as to not remove too much of the back-brushing. 6. To create the half up–half down look, brush the sides up and back, securing with pins. 7. To add additional volume, run your fingers up several curls to create volume and variations in texture. For a long but natural, lasting hold, spray with additional hairspray.
