GENLUX SAMIA ARSLANE EDITOR IN CHIEF

3-star chef whose reputation precedes him. The first time I met Joël was a few years back, a chance encounter in the elevator at the Mandarin Landmark hotel in Hong Kong where we were both heading up to L’Atelier Robuchon. He has a charming personality and a warm smile—we instantly clicked and have remained friends ever since. Find out more about him (p118).

It’s fall and time for fashion’s most important season. In this issue, we caught up with a few talented women— starting with the beautiful Paula Patton, our cover girl who simply never disappoints. From her beauty to her personality, Paula is an incredible soul. After her very public divorce, she’s better than ever—still standing like many strong women in this world (p82). Also in this issue, Francesca Eastwood, Clint’s daughter. Don’t miss out on her candid interview where she talks about her childhood and her latest movie, Outlaws and Angels (p32). Making her thrid appearance in Genlux is E! News correspondent Catt Sadler (p26). This smart beauty just competed a documentary, Women Like Us: Three Women. One Journey. To Change the World, to bring focus to womenled causes around the world. We all know women are exceptional, (right??) but let’s not forget about the many extraordinary men who surround us. We were lucky enough to sit down with two of them for this issue. One, Mark Harmon owns and manages resorts (p115), and the other, Joël Robucon, is a Michelin

Genlux wouldn’t be complete without our Jetsetters. Featured in our glossy pages is another talented woman with a famous dad, Jade Jagger (p109). Someone should make a movie of her life. The other Jetsetters are the dynamic designer duo Brian Wolk and Claude Morais who recently moved to our beautiful City of Angels and are living the dream (p108). We have a ton of fashion pages as well. It’s fall, after all. Check out what’s trending and get inspired by our gorgeous spreads! As always, I’d love to hear what’s trending in your fashion world. samia@genlux.com. Bisous à tous!

The easy, breezy host on the former Daily 10 and now a correspondent on E! News, Catt Sadler’s been a fixture on the entertainment network for the past decade. Aside from being on-air six days a week, Catt successfully juggles a few lifetimes worth of ambition. Here, she answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire. Your passion? My passion is my family. My passion is inspiring others. My passion is not cooking. Ha! Fashion style? My off-duty style is relaxed, chic, with a rocker edge. The antithesis of pushup bras and pearls. I live in denim and wouldn’t have it any other way. Favorite charity? I have been the international spokesperson for the Women Like Us Foundation for five years now. My gorgeous mother, Linda Rendleman, started the organization. It has been a pleasure helping her realize her vision of supporting women-led causes around the world. From female genital mutilation to sex trafficking to teen mentoring, we lift up an assortment of phenomenal females making changes in these areas—here in the United States and also abroad. I’ve spent the last year producing my first documentary highlighting some of our efforts in hopes of inspiring other women to get involved. It’s called Women Like Us: Three Women. One Journey. To Change the World. It’s been an incredible learning experience and I can’t wait to share it. Current projects? In addition to appearing on E! News each day and producing my first documentary, I am also CEO of #theCATTWALK. My fashion and lifestyle blog has become an exten-

sion of my expertise and passion, and has really allowed me to connect with my audience in a more meaningful way. Curating and creating content in digital space with my team is a total buzz and has become artistically gratifying. I’m also a brand ambassador for Murad Skincare. It’s been a dream come true working with this well-respected company on the Rapid Lightening Regimen. I believe wholeheartedly in the efficacy of their products—so how cool to be attached to this line in a meaningful way?! Juggling careers? It’s tough. It’s a never-ending circus of carpools and appointments and sports schedules for the kids while also trying to manage team #theCATTWALK and appear on television six days a week. I have a lot of help. It also helps that my boys are getting older. When I’m at work, I’m at work. When it’s family time, I’m fully present. That helps. Fitness routine? In recent months I’ve been alternating running and hot yoga. I fall out of my routine easily but manage to come back around eventually. Yoga has become an addiction because it truly fuels me both mentally and physically. I used to hate running, but now I like the solitary aspect of it. I rarely find alone time, but running seems to give me this and allows me to come up for air, if you will.

♥ VIDEO Francesca shares ‘My Favorite Things’ Click Here!

alk about the apple not falling far from the tree. Francesca Eastwood, 23, is starring in her first feature film—a shoot-em-up Western called Outlaws and Angels. (Not sure who the angels, but there are plenty of outlaws.) The movie begins when a gang of thugs on the run from the law decides to invade and hole up in the Tildon family home. One of the criminals takes a likin’ to pretty young Florence Tildon, played by a convincing, scene-stealing Eastwood, and a game of cat-and-mouse ensues. Things turn ugly fast, and some of the action is disturbingly savage—or even a bit appalling. Even so, the gruesomeness is decidedly exaggerated, blurring the lines between drama and dark comedy (Golden Globes comedy category, take note). Fair to say Francesca had a predilection to act. Her mom is actress Frances Fisher (Titanic, Unforgiven) who also appears in Outlaws and Angels. “My passion is acting,” Francesca shares. “Storytelling and people, and filmmaking as a whole. I have a great appreciation and respect for everything that goes into it.” Francesca was born in Redding, California. Her parents split up a few years after her birth and Francesca lived with her mom. When Francesca was eight and staying in Vancouver (where Frances was shooting a TV series), disaster struck. On Christmas morning their house caught fire. Francesca climbed out of a bedroom window and onto the roof of the garage before jumping to safety into the arms of

a neighbor. Her dad flew up immediately to be by her side in the hospital. She says it took years of emotional recovery, and it’s still the saddest time of her life. Francesca ran from Hollywood during her high school years and moved up to be with her dad where they lived in Carmel on the famed 17-Mile Drive. She always dreamed of living in a small town in a house with the white picket fence and a happy family—and this was close. For college, it was back to Los Angeles and USC, where she majored in business. As with most Hollywood kids, controversy happens. Social media blasted her for setting an expensive Birkin bag on fire for a photo shoot, and on a whim, she married Jordan Feldstein, brother of actor Jonah Hill, in the place where it should have stayed—Las Vegas. She filed for an annulment after just a few days. These days, Francesca, who grew up involved in community service and charity, has a renewed appreciation for giving back and philanthropy. “I’ve been on the Young Hollywood Board of Environmental Media Association, and the Art of the Brain charity,” she says, adding, “Now that I’m an adult, and my life is getting more stable, I have that desire to find a charitable niche that I love.” The young Eastwood’s getting more film roles that she’s excited about and is in a good place in her life, “I feel lucky for my great relationship with my parents and siblings. I’m grateful for art and music, and for my willingness to learn more and to know there’s so much more out there.” G FALL 2016 GENLUX 37

ou’re not likely to see actress Paula Patton’s new digs on one of those TMZ tours of the stars homes. She recently moved far from the hubbub of Hollywood to a quiet and rustic neighborhood outside of Calabasas—miles from where the paparazzi are staking out. She’s farther still from the millions of her newly minted fans in China who shelled out a whopping $46 million on opening night of her latest film, Warcraft—the highest-grossing movie based on a video game in history. Paula is, indeed, an international movie star. But don’t tell her that. “I don’t think I ever wanted fame,” says the LA native, adding, “I love my anonymity. I remember my first job was Déjà Vu opposite Denzel Washington when nobody knew who I was. We were in New Orleans shooting, and I went to a Whole Foods store, and the checkout girls were saying, “Do you know who was just here? Denzel Washington was just here!” That didn’t sound like a fun idea to me—to not be able to go to the grocery store or just walk down the street without everybody looking at you. I realize that fame can be a part of this job and to be thankful to those who come up to say nice things—but anonymity is a beautiful thing.” The winding road that leads to Paula’s soaring wooden A-frame home is barely wide enough for one car to drive through. Her huge backyard, filled with giant trees and a big grassy field, could easily accommodate a two-hole, parthree golf course. Today, landscapers are trimming, mowing, and carefully arranging flats of moss to decorate a hillside. Robert Steinken, the photographer on our shoot for Genlux, notices the bright green plants still in their black plastic boxes. “They’re perfect just like that,” he tells them. “Please don’t plant them yet. I want to shoot them as is. Oh, and can I please borrow one of your leaf blowers?” Robert’s worked with Paula for over ten years. He’s been her hairstylist-turned-friend and confidant and has traveled the world coiffing her for press junkets and photo shoots. Robert was a shoulder to lean on when Paula was going through her very public divorce from singer-songwriter Robin Thicke (“Blurred Lines”), whom she first met at an under-21 hip-hop club. She was only 16; Robin was only 14. Two years later they began dating and the couple married in 2005. They separated in early 2014, during which time Robin publicly admitted his selfishness and tried hard to win Paula back. He even wrote an album titled “Paula,” but it was too late. She filed for divorce and the marriage ended last year. The couple has one child, Julian Fuego, who is now six. Robert accompanied Paula as her hairstylist on the world premiere tour of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol that she co-starred in with Tom Cruise. They traveled to Tokyo,

Seoul, Dubai, Munich, London, Moscow—ten countries in all, in less than two weeks. Though she’s a blockbuster film star, her most critically acclaimed role came as Ms. Blu Rain in the movie Precious. By 10 a.m., not counting our Genlux crew, Paula’s home is full of people—some work for her; some are friends. Some, I find out, are family, like her successful New York investment banker brother, Charles, who mentions that one of the perks of having Paula as a sister is hanging out at exclusive clubs like The Nice Guy, where the velvet ropes part like the Red Sea. Paula is an unrelenting host—bouncing from person to person like a hummingbird in a field of flowers, making sure everyone has a fair share of the nectar. “Would you care for something to drink? Can I please get you something?” As noon rolls around, the photo assistants have set up the lighting for our first look over by the tool shed. The unflattering sunlight is directly overhead, so they’ve carefully commandeered a 12-by-12-foot silk material to diffuse the light where Paula will stand. But when Paula comes out, she wants to shoot in another part of the yard. “I’m not feelin’ it here,” she says. “Can we please move further down?” It comes up again when she’s asked to step onto the large black duvetyn backdrop. Again, a setup that took hours to construct. “I can’t. It doesn’t feel right,” she says. “We have all of this beautiful nature around us, and you want me to stand on this black fabric? It hurts my spirit.” Later, Paula, who attended U.C. Berkeley for one year before transferring to USC film school, would explain, “I’ve found that it’s possible to see things beyond this material world—I’m not religious, but I’m quite spiritual. When you open your eyes, it helps to open your heart. There’s more to this space than what we see in front of us.” During the next look, Julian slides next to Paula on the set and begins hamming it up for the camera. “He’s strongwilled like the rest of his family,” she says, holding him tightly. “He shows me so much through his curiosity. Above all, I try to teach him two things: to be compassionate and kind. I tell him it doesn’t matter if you’re the most successful or have the most money—none of it matters, and you won’t make me proud if you’re not those things.” Julian is taking this two-household life in stride. “The only thing that matters is that he’s happy and well adjusted,” Paula says. “I try to explain to him that this may not be the best-case scenario, and yet, it’s the best for us right now. I know he will be a happier child because of it. Happy mom, happy dad, happy child. It might not be what you imagined in a fairytale way, but I try not to give him too many excuses in life because children like to take those and run with them.” Stomachs are grumbling, so we break for lunch, which, of course, Paula has graciously organized. There’s a table full of beautifully arranged salads, finger sandwiches and crudités. Stylist Julie Matos grabs a sandwich in one hand

and Paula in the other and quickly drapes her in a thick knit CHANEL dress and knee-high leather boots. Paula struts back out in the heat and positions herself on a large boulder. Someone asks if we need the leaf blower. “Yes! Yes! Where is that leaf blower?” Paula exclaims, laughing. “It’s 100 degrees out, and I’m…in…a…sweater. Yes, I want a leaf blower!” Zipping around Paula, snapping pics and capturing video, is her newfound social media crew. “I’ve given over to it,” she says. “As long as you don’t get caught up with what everybody else feels or thinks. I’m not quite ready to have it on my phone—to have it so accessible to me. There’s the quandary. You view comments and fall prey to negativity, or you look at it as a confidence booster—but that’s not real either. Let me look and see—do they like me? Do they like me? The truth is you have to like yourself. I’m working on it.” Paula slips into the stunning metallic gold and black lamé GUCCI dress. Without mentioning Robin’s name, we broach the subject of forgiveness. “To move forward you have to forgive others as well as yourself,” she says. “We only have this one life to live, so we have to forgive those who have caused our pain. And we need to forgive ourselves for the things of which we’re not proud. It all comes back to love and compassion. Whenever you’re looking for a solution, it always comes back to love. Love is always the answer.” On Paula’s coffee table is a copy of Michael A. Singer’s T he Untethered Soul: T he Jour ney Beyond Yourself. “I love this book...it’s about letting go,” she says. “One of the biggest challenges of single life, after having been married to someone for so long, is how do I let go of needing to ask ‘How do I look in this dress?’ Or of no longer having them to ask how their day was. I think partnership and love is a beautiful thing. I just think I’m meant to be on this journey to find a way to love myself.” Throughout the day, Paula mentions taking a walk up the street to shoot by a bridge, but everyone had the same thought: It’s 100 degrees out, please don’t make us walk anywhere. But now, as the sun begins to set, she presses the point. So we start packing the photo gear to make the trek. Without fear, Paula throws on a sheer Valentino gown and a warm fire-breathing dragon leather jacket, and we’re off. “Paula only knows how to give one hundred percent,” Robert shares. “She doesn’t know how to do things halfway or to feel halfway or to experience halfway.” As it turns out, the shots on the bridge are the best of the day, and are, as Paula sees it, a metaphor for her life. “I’m crossing over a bridge and excited for the journey that’s waiting for me on the other side.” G

I’m open to love in all of its forms. Friendship or romantic. I’m very open to it. I’ve found it in different ways. If you want to know, I’m single.

PAULA ON FINDING LOVE:

Looking back, you realize worry never helps the situation. Most of the time things work out and will be great. Approach everything with love and kindness for all people around you and it will work out. Yes, it will work out. Yes, it is going to be great. PAULA ON WORRY:

Life’s a balance of trying your best and having ambition but not letting your desires rule your happiness. And not being hard on yourself about what does or doesn’t happen. Then you find inner peace. PAULA ON HAPPINESS:

The most important charities to me are for the children. You cannot choose where you’re born or to whom you’re born. We have to find ways to create equal footing for all children to succeed. That is an important thing for me to explore. J.J. Abrams and his wife have a wonderful charity, the Children’s Defense Fund. PAULA ON CHARITY:

Fear or insecurity used to hold me back. I’m so excited because this life is short and there’s so much to be gained if you open your eyes to it and not be judgmental. In the last few years, I’ve seen so much and tried new things. It’s been a fun and joyful ride. PAULA ON FEAR:

If I could change anything about myself, I would like not to care as much about what others think. It’s important to care about the ones we love and respect, but often we fall prey to caring what the world thinks.

PAULA ON CHANGE:

I was about to join the flock of Kardashian haters by sharing why they are everything that society should not celebrate when I decided to watch their program (yes, it’s even shown here in London). I did this as the brilliant designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard was on their show decorating one of their homes. I thought surely Martyn, who has designed a few of my own, must know something. Seven hours later, I was still watching. Could this be because they are mirroring our/my desires? Are they everything that Cinderella wants today? By now you’ve all seen Kendall Jenner, the queen of fashion, beautifully gracing the coveted September issue cover of Vogue. By the way, her first fashion magazine cover was Genlux back in the fall of 2012. Back to fashion. We can opt for a vast array of styles this season: rock chic, romantically laced hippie, sophisticated nerdy professional, or artist’s muse. Leopard and flowers sit happily together. I love the Dolce & Gabbana ladybird and butterfly jewelry mixed with the black jacket sharpness of McQueen. There’s a great jaunty belt from Azzedine Alaïa and a must-have widebrim hat from Gucci. Time to go shopping.

Help Needed. Louisiana Flooding.

The historic flooding this summer has caused an untold amount of damage and destruction in Louisiana. Several have died in its wake, and first responders and the U.S. Coast Guard rescued over 20,000. Thousands of homes and business are damaged, roads are closed, tens of thousands are without power, and 12,000 people are in shelters.

Charities have stepped in to help in a variety of ways, from distributing bottled water and food to providing shelter for displaced victims. But they note that flood relief donations lag behind donations to other recent disasters. If you want to help, consider making a monetary donation to one of these top-rated four-star charities as rated by CharityNavigator.org

IS THERE A NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR GETTING RID OF MY DOUBLE CHIN? Yes! Look into Kybella—the first and only FDA-approved injectable to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin by physically destroying fat cells. Many men and women have experienced positive results. The formula absorbs fat by destroying the fat cell’s membrane. Once the cell membrane is gone, the body removes the remaining fat cell in a natural way.

How many sessions are required? On average, 4-6 sessions will achieve the results you want. The result will be a firm, youthful look.

How long do Kybella treatments last? Results will begin within four to six weeks, and they last for years. Kybella is similar to a product that your body naturally creates, which means it is unlikely that a reaction or any adverse effects will occur. As with any cosmetic treatment, everyone’s expectations and experiences are unique. Please consult a Board- certified dermatologist who will walk you through all of the benefits and possible side effects. —Dr. Kathy Lee

Q: I’m thinking about having my breast implants removed. I’ve had them since my early 20s (I’m in my late 40s now—shhhh!). I’m concerned about how I’ll look after the surgery. Can I have pretty, natural breasts without implants? Dr. A: Many women who had breast augmentation surgery with implants in their 20s or 30s desire to have them removed in their 40s or 50s. In fact, over 30,000 women make the same decision each year. And the good news is that there are some good options for women who want to remove their implants. One option frequently requested is a breast lift, or mastopexy. This procedure restores the perkiness and shape to a ptotic (sagging) breast. The scars that come with a lift typically heal better in older patients, and the improvement in shape and comfort usually makes it a good trade. But a lift doesn’t address the lack of natural breast volume. Fortunately, fat grafting, or lipo transfer, offers a natural alternative to silicone or saline implants to augment volume. This method uses your natural fat, harvested with liposuction from areas of unwanted fat, to add volume. Both implant removal and fat grafting can be done at once—a procedure referred to as ‘simultaneous implant exchange with fat’ (SIEF), so that correction to volume and breast shape caused by the implant removal can be accomplished immediately. Breast implant removal is not a long procedure. You’ll begin with general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, and typically the implant removal surgery is performed in less than an hour. Of course adding a breast lift and fat grafting will lengthen the procedure, usually by another 2–3 hours. Every woman’s situation is unique, and your decision to remove your implants is also uniquely your own. It’s important to consult with a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery to establish the best course of action to achieve the best results. You’ll also gain understanding of the risks and possible complications, and be fully informed about the possible outcome.

OBSESSED! CHANEL PUTS THE OUI IN WHEAT

The ‘Wheat Collection’ by CHANEL could be one of the most beautiful collections of jewels to grace my eyes—ever. From the latest High Jewelry Collection, Les Blés de Chanel celebrates the life cycle of wheat. As an eternal symbol of endless creativity, prosperity and luck, this 62-piece collection resembles a dancing field of grain. The one piece that caught my eye is the Fête des Moissons bracelet, mounted on white and yellow gold set with an 11.1-carat yellow diamond, 45 fancy-cut multicolor diamonds, 564 brilliant-cut yellow diamonds, three pear-cut diamonds, nine marquise-cut diamonds, 17 brilliant-cut diamonds and two marquise-cut fancy intense yellow diamonds. Does it get any better than this? I think not...CHANEL, Beverly Hills, 310-278-5500

I was going to write about the amazing gold fingerless, opera-length gloves by GUCCI, but decided that the entire collection for this Fall 2016 season was worth a serious shout-out. Alessandro Michele was appointed as the creative director in January 2015, and not since Tom Ford was at the helm has GUCCI been so exciting! Dresses adorned with owls, pale lime and poppy-red sweaters, ruffled capes, sequins, sequins and more sequins! The sequined dresses, the sequined shoes, the sequined capes, the sequined purses...I could go on and on, but I sum it up in four little words: I WANT IT ALL!! GUCCI, Beverly Hills, 310-278-3451

GO SAINT LAURENT

Okay, kids...gather round, ‘cause the Varsity jacket is back, and it’s the one jacket that’s an absolute must for this Fall 2016 season! My fave? The Saint Laurent striped jersey-trimmed wool pique. What’s so fabulous about this jacket is that fact that there are not a lot of appliqués junking it up, and if you feel like adding your personal touch there’s a lot of real-estate on the jacket to add your own. The padded shoulders add a sophisticated touch to this sporty jacket, allowing it to go from daytime to evening. A satin lining makes this jacket perfect for those cool fall days. Genlux Out-of-Towner

It’s been an exciting couple of months for luxury footwear designer Chloe Gosselin. She has just earned her spot as a finalist for the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize, only two years after launching her namesake label. The French model-turned-designer may be new on the scene, but she’s far from green. Chloe has been a student of art and fashion her whole life; her collection expresses a storied understanding of shape, texture and a tradition of Italian craftsmanship. She got her start at the La Cambre Fine Arts Program in Brussels, and from there she entered the fast-paced world of fashion as an internationally acclaimed model. But after a whirlwind decade of travel, photoshoots, and runway work, she craved a way to express herself more creatively. She pursued shoemaking and production at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and Ars Sutoria in Milan, before launching the Chloe Gosselin brand in 2014. Soon she was catching the attention of celebrities like Madonna, Taylor Swift, and Kate Winslet. Her collection ranges from colorful, functional flats to exquisitely designed pumps, evoking feminine elegance and sensuality. She characterizes each style with the name of a poisonous flower—beautiful and dangerous, elevated by elements of exotic materials, bright colors and fierce design details. So when she travels to Los Angeles, where does this designer on the rise, mom, and fiancé of illusionist David Copperfield go for a drink? –Courtney Fortune

On and Off the Plane Where do you stay in LA?

The Sunset Marquis. It feels very homey. I love the villas and the outdoor restaurant. Have drinks? Chateau Marmont for dinner or drinks. The food is amazing, and itʼs full of stories and history.

How do you make your hotel room feel more like home? Sky does

that really well by putting her toys everywhere! I love to line my products up in the bathroom, unpack and steam my clothes right away. I always bring Oribe shampoo and conditioner.

What are your packing essentials? How do you look refreshed after a long flight? I don’t. (laughs) Flowy dresses from Chloe,

Zimmerman, or vintage Halston with my flat Daphne or Cardinalis sandals. A little heel, like my Hyacinth or Bryonia sandals for the evening, with a suit jacket from The Row or vintage Saint Laurent.

But I do clean my face with the Eve Lom cleanser, as well as apply the night mask from Tata Harper and let it sit for 30 minutes.

What’s in your carry-on?

What do you wish LA had that NYC has? Proximity. In New

My computer and sketchbook to design. But mostly books and toys for my daughter, Sky.

Chloe Gosselin Bryonia sandal, $963

What do you wish NYC had that LA has? The nature all

around, and the cool, relaxed attitude.

York I can walk everywhere or hop on a subway.

Red-eye or morning flight? David loves the red-eye, but it can be tiring for a small child. So when it’s just Sky and me, we take the morning flight.

the rocks that is just spectacular. Museum? The Getty… for the art and the view. Neighborhoods: I love Melrose Place and Venice, but if I could buy

a house in LA it would probably be in the hills— Iʼm obsessed with the trees and the mountains. Time of year: What’s amazing about LA is that it’s nice all year

‘round. That said, I would say spring and fall are my two favorite seasons, because the days are still beautiful, but you need a little jacket at night.
