12 GENLUX FALL 2019

STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Yet another fashion icon is gone. Peter Lindbergh, the photographer who graced us with over four decades of extraordinary images, has died. Lindbergh, who was German, became known as the anti-makeup photographer. He pushed for his images to be honest representations of his subjects. In 2014, he said, “This should be the responsibility of photographers today to free women, and finally everyone, from the terror of youth and perfection.” During the 90s, Lindbergh accelerated the emergence of the Supermodel. His photos of Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patiz, Cindy Crawford, Eva Herzigova, and Claudia Schiffer ushered in that unique time in fashion history. His January 1990 British Vogue cover – which featured five of the girls – he christened the “birth certificate of the Supermodels.” The happily married photographer admittedly fell in love with every one of his models, but, he would say, only from 9 to 5. Lindbergh had a way of building trust and instilling confidence in his subjects. He is the one who encouraged Linda Evangelista to lop off her hair. “He assured me that I wouldn’t fail with short hair,” Linda once shared. He was so right. He was also right in his understanding of what it took to create classic images. His partiality toward black and white photographs tended to strip away the

element of time, and his predilection toward simple, timeless fashion did the same. According to Lindbergh, black and white photographs could get under the skin, while color merely remained on the surface. Like an intimate conversation, the magic of a Lindbergh photograph was spawned from the safe space he created with his subject—often, where both he and the camera would disappear. A Lindbergh photograph was clearly timestamped with a moment-between-the-moments spontaneity—easily identifiable by their composition, their simplicity of props, the subject’s melancholy looks of hopelessness (under his direction), and the tactility of the photo grain. To other photographers, a Lindbergh black and white could likely conjure up the sweet aftertaste of developer. Lindbergh liked to keep to himself, and many years ago had stopped attending fashion shows in fear they would homogenize his creative thinking. In truth, he cared very little about fashion. He successfully convinced designers that the essence of branding was not in the documentation of the clothes, but in the emotion that the image stirred. Lindbergh was twice married, had four sons, and seven grandchildren. He died on September 3, 2019, in Paris, at age 74. May he forever rest in peace.

T

he trouble with having money, well, lots of it, like Sydney Holland, is your phone is forever blowing up. Texts from entrepreneurs, inventors, politicians, charities, museums, and filmmakers— all looking for a soft heart to back their venture or campaign. “My mother is always telling me I have to be better about saying no,” says Sydney. “It’s difficult for me; it’s my nature to be generous.” These days, Sydney, a doting mother of three, is behind many successful businesses, political campaigns, film projects, and charities. She’s also an ardent patron of the arts and follows her love for contemporary art, helping emerging artists, and supporting our local LA art museum scene. “It’s my passion,” Sydney says. “I’m heavily involved with MOCA, and ICALA, and the Cayton Children’s Museum at Santa Monica Place.” Sydney takes a moment out of her busy schedule to answer our Genlux Two-Word Interview.

GPS location? I’m sitting on the beach in Emerald Bay, looking at the ocean as I talk to you. You’re wearing? This is very untypical of the way I dress, but I’m on the beach, so I have on a Maison Michelle hat, Celine sunglasses, CHANEL flip-flops, an LNA tank top, and Moussy denim shorts. Everyday style? I’m either uberly casual chic, super dressed up, or in workout clothes. I would never walk around in, or meet someone for lunch, in my workout clothes. I come home after working out and change before going out. Red-carpet look? Ninety-percent vintage couture. I love Lily et Cie, where owner Rita Watnick is one of the best curators of fashion in LA. I also go to Covet by Christos, Sielian Vintage, and Torso Vintage in San Francisco. Go-to boutiques? I love Celine. I do mostly Rodeo, though, I also go to Neimans, Barneys, and Saks for shoes. I love local LA designers like Co, and I like curated stores like Gratus in Beverly Hills, SWITCH up on Beverly Glen Circle, and Shop Superstreet on La Brea.

Your hometown? I grew up in La Jolla. Your heroes: My father, who was my everything. Gloria Vanderbilt, who designed the first pair of jeans I owned. Childhood crushes? Shawn Cassidy, and John Taylor from Duran Duran. Happiest moment? When each child was born. Alexandra Red, 6, and my twin boys, Liam Gray, and Harrison Black, 3. Painful moment? Going through a major public breakup was a really painful time in my life. Not thinking you’re going to get to the other side because you’re in so much pain. Making it to the other side and holding your head up high is the blessing you see when you make it through. I’ve been on the other side for several years now. Your passion? I have two passions. Being the best mother I can be in raising polite, wellgrounded happy children that will be productive members of society. Also, art has become a passion of mine over the years. I love and collect contemporary art. Favorite quote? “Not everyone you meet will see your magic.” (continued on page 47)

Charity Work? Every day is spent working on a different charity. Today, since I’m on the board of the Friendly House, I'm thinking about our big fundraiser at the Beverly Hilton next month. For ICALA, I recently did a summer school program with this incredible woman who brings toys to orphanages around the world like Cambodia and Russia. Guilty pleasure? Oh my gosh, watching reality TV is definitely my guilty pleasure. I watch the Housewives of New York and Housewives of Beverly Hills while eating andSons chocolates. Best trait? My friends would say my generosity and kindness and willingness to take a phone call to help out any time, day or night. Biggest fear? To get caught in an earthquake where I can’t get my kids out. Beauty secrets? I have two secret skin gurus, Michelle Montiel and Yonat Zilberg, who come to my house every few weeks. I also love dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu. Maranda Widlund for color and Kerry Malouf for makeup. I’m an advocate of healthy living, so no smoking, no drinking, and consuming lots of water. I watch what I eat. Lash secret? Lift and Tint, by Sarah Maxwell. Biggest misconception? People think I’m unapproachable and not down-to-earth. I’m both approachable and down-to-earth. Favorite getaway? Paris and Italy. Positano, the Amalfi Coast and the Ritz in Paris. I also love Laguna Beach and rent a house on Emerald Bay. I’m here now! Character change? I’d like to be more patient. To be able to wait, and pause, and see what unfolds. I can be impatient because I expect people to do things promptly. Biggest regret? Not finishing my college education. I come from a family of accomplished people. My sister has an MBA, my mother has a Ph.D., and my dad was a doctor. I was not into school because I suffered from

dyslexia which wasn’t diagnosed at the time. I want to go back and get my art history degree. Self-guidance? If I could go back in time, I’d tell my 25-year-old self to love yourself unconditionally, to never compromise for what you believe in, or stand for, and do not worry about what other people’s opinion of you is, because what other people think of you is none of your business. Favorite dream? My dad passed away when I was 20. I see him and talk to him many times in my dreams. Your relationship? I’m single and doing what everyone does in LA, dating. Ideal man? I would like to find someone who is kind, funny, smart, and sophisticated. Someone who is a grown-up, emotionally available, and loves kids. Someone to have as a life partner. Fantasy dinner? If I could have five guests, they would be my father, Richard Branson, Arianna Huffington, Warren Buffet, and Bill Gates. What’s next? Raising my incredible three children and figuring out their lives. I am producing an animated short on a family who lost their daughter to gun violence. I’m going to get more involved in gun control and to help be of service to people who have lost their children. I launched this exciting new business called The Urban and the Mystic, a curated gift box business. We have 12 different boxes. Each box is curated with a beautiful assortment of items for special occasions like birthdays, weddings, births, or, for times when inspiration is needed, ones for prosperity, meditation, or just good vibes. Each handcrafted box comes with different things like organic candles, crystals, sage, etc. Soon, we are launching in retail stores. I have projects, like this one, that really inspires me and makes me feel good. I’m enjoying a beautiful life. G

OKAY, SYDNEY HOLLAND, PLEASE RATE YOURSELF ON A SCALE FROM 1-10. Romantic: 8, I love romance. I also believe that men should be men, and women should be women. Getting flowers or a love note from a suitor is romantic. I think it's the man's job. Sensitive: 8-9, I'm too sensitive. I get my feelings hurt easily. Affectionate: 10, both with my children and if I'm in a relationship. Judgemental: 3, I'm not judgemental. Fashionable: 10, I feel like I'm fashionable. Competitive: 7, I'm competitive with myself, to be the best I can be. Can I be better at this, or better at that? Comparing is a no-win situation. Emotional: I can quickly go from a 5 to a 10. I'm a female, so of course I'm emotional. Forgiving: 10, I'm always forgiving. I'm a forgive and forget person. HEY, FIFTY, MEET THE NEW FABULOUS

Lifeʼs been pretty peachy for Cynthia Bailey, star of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta. As STEPHEN KAMIFUJI discovers, the newly-engaged, 50-something beauty is ready to spring into the next half of her life, albeit as she hopes, with a touch more selfishness and greed.

S

ome say having high cheekbones are the key to beauty. Angelina Jolie, Beyonce, Keira Knightley, and 82-year-old supermodel Carmen Dell’Orefice, all have them, and make a convincing case. The Real Housewives of Atlanta star, Cynthia Bailey, has them too. “I was blessed with many things,” Cynthia says, settling into the makeup chair at the Genlux magazine cover shoot. “But I’m extra thankful to God that he blessed me with these good ol’ cheekbones. I didn’t even know they were a thing until I started modeling, and everyone would comment on them. Now, I know they’re my best feature.” Cynthia joined the cast of Housewives in 2010 and immediately became besties with the show’s franchise star, Nene Leakes. Last April, during the reunion show (the grand finale where the cast rehashes the past season), a bitter friendship-ending fight ensued between the two. After the show, as mics were being removed, Cynthia’s final under-her-breath remark was that she’s not getting paid enough for all of this drama. Producers left the comment in. Will she return? Cliffhanger. It was the mid-80s when the five-foot-ten-inch Alabama-native won homecoming queen of

her high school and Wilhelmina Models snapped Cynthia up to a five-year contract. The top models of the day were predominately white, like Brooke Shields, Cindy Crawford, Paulina Porizkova, and Christie Brinkley. So Cynthia turned to groundbreaking black supermodels, Beverly Johnson and Iman, for mentoring and advice. “I really looked up to both of them,” says Cynthia, “They were instrumental in my career in giving me both guidance and friendship.” “I adore her,” says Beverly, the first African-American to grace the cover of Vogue. “Cynthia is smart and beautiful, with a strong desire to achieve. I watched her career take off. She appeared in fashion spreads for Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair, and two covers of Essence magazine. She moved to Paris and Milan, where she hit the runways. She just had that it factor.” Beverly was right, Cynthia has that certain something, and through the years, many highprofile men have sought her attention. She waited until age 43 to wed, marrying Peter Thomas on a third-season episode of Housewives. The marriage played out on the show, including their split in 2016, and Cynthia swore she’d never marry again. When sportscaster Mike Hill appeared on the scene last August, all bets were off, and last month, Mike proposed. “It was a complete surprise,” Cynthia says. “I had a feeling we were going to get engaged, but I didn’t know when.” Like a true romantic, Hill went down on one knee and put a five-carat diamond ring on it. The union, scheduled for next year, will blend Mike and his two daughters, Ashlee and Kayla, with Cynthia, and Noelle, her daughter with Leon Robinson. Right now, Noelle is torn between college and becoming an actress in Hollywood. “It’s been a very bumpy road—a mess,” Cynthia confesses. “I think as a mother, the worst phase age-wise for me has been 16 ’til now. She’s 19. They think they know everything and have all the answers, but they don’t.” Cynthia insists her teen years were a cakewalk for her mom. “I didn’t have a lot of freedom or options,” she says, “I went to school, went to church, and did what I was supposed to do. If I got in trouble in school, it was a sure thing I’d get it when I got home. I was a good girl and still think I am in a lot of ways.” With the Housewives show currently on hiatus, Cynthia remains busy. “I have a new wine bar and event space called The Bailey WineCellar in Atlanta,” she says. “I’ve also got some new products coming out and I have a contract with Seagram’s for my Escapes Peach Bellini drink. After my Genlux cover debuts, who knows, a cosmetic contract? I have been waiting on the right skincare, and makeup call to come in. I make no secret about being 52, so a lot of women look to me for skincare and makeup tips.” The indefatigable quinquagenarian has no plans to slow down and, on the contrary, is ready for the next phase of her life—save for one crucial twist. “In the past, I’ve put other people before myself and made a lot of sacrifices,” Cynthia says. “A people pleaser? Oh my God, I was the president of the people-pleaser organization. So, I decided when I turned 50 to take better care of me. The first 50 years was for everyone else, the last – for as long as I get – will be different. I’ve decided that it’s okay to be a little greedy and a little selfish and focus on myself. This summer, with all my friends away,

it was the perfect time to get organized for the next part of my life. I have decided to honor the “less is more” ethos and clean things up a bit. This month, I am having a two-day auction sale in London where it all will be sold—shoes, clothes, furniture and art. I am closing the door on the past and making way to manifest an exciting new future. I already feel lighter, and I am thrilled to shed my 800+ items. The Swan Auction House has been wonderful. So helpful, and fortunately, no tears have been shed.

CHANEL HAUTE COUTURE FW19

Coming up, I am looking forward to London Fashion Week, The Goodwood Revival, The London Film Festival, and Frieze. I am also looking forward to being filmed for an upcoming BBC special on people of Chelsea. Also, with the newfound holes in my closet, I am happy to purchase a few brightly-coloured coats this season in shocking pink and green. I am also keen on a new designer, Susie Cave, and her collection called The Vampires Wife. Susie’s the wife of rocker, Nick Cave, who came up with the brand’s unusual name.

SERIOUSLY, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT... BY LAURA DUNN LUXURY FASHION EDITOR

CAPED CRUSADER

For the past four years, I have been totally obsessed with capes, only to finally have this trend hit hard for F/W 2019! YAY!! It’s one of the stronger silhouettes to come out this fall. Long, short, in-between, take your pick, because this trend is here to stay, and there is not a more elegant way to dress up any outfit. Marc Jacobs showed one in leopard, and a basic one was in order for Hedi Slimane’s second collection for Celine. My two favorites this season are the gorgeous long black metallic cape by CHANEL and my “to die for” is the Balmain long black sequin cape. Hop on this trend because...the cape is heroic for any occasion! Balmain, 8421 Melrose Place, WeHo, 323-230-6364

OTK MAGIC

I walked into CHANEL a month ago to grab a gift for a friend, and, of course, walked out with a pair of the most beautiful boots of 2019! The CHANEL black, over-the-knee boot with gold or multi-color metallic graffiti could be the most magical boot I have seen this season! I told the salesperson I wanted to wait as it was only July and a little too early to buy fall boots. His reply? It was the last pair they had—so I bought ‘em. The hip factor is outta this world, and you will be seeing me sporting the gold version around town all winter! CHANEL printed lambskin and patent calfskin boot, $3950, CHANEL, Beverly Hills, 310-278-5055

100 GENLUX FALL 2019

Every year, a month before my birthday (Sept. 26), I set out on a quest to find the best antiaging treatments, products, and services. My good friend, Sarah Magness, recommended Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)— breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or tube. It’s a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, a hazard of scuba diving. Other conditions treated with HBOT include serious infections, wounds that won’t heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury, anti-aging, and so much more. In an HBOT chamber, the air pressure is three times higher than normal air pressure. Under these conditions, your lungs can gather more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. Your blood carries this oxygen throughout your body to help fight bacteria and stimulate the release of growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing. I started on my HBOT journey last week with Ed Wildrick at 90210 Hyperbarics. Over one month, I’m doing a series of sessions totaling 20 hours to see if it changes the texture and firmness of my skin. So far, so good! Every time I walk out that door, people want to know what I have done to my skin. 90210 Hyperbarics, 9301 Wilshire Blvd, Ste 420, Beverly Hills, 424-302-0232

GETAWAY NEW YORK

Torch Song Lady Liberty’s original torch gloriously displayed at the new Statue of Liberty museum.

My last visit to New York was back in 2017, so on this trip I was surprised by the number of cranes filling the skyline. 20+ soaring towers are sprouting up all over the Big Apple—especially along 57th Street and Central Park South. It’s quite unbelievable. This time, as an American Citizen, I did touristy things and took in many of the city’s iconic landmarks. I also seized the chance to stay in two magnificent hotels, experience a culinary tour in Queens (so many unimaginable flavors), and enjoyed a private tour of the new Statue of Liberty Museum. I also caught artist Cj Hendry’s solo exhibition, Rorschach, where my inner child let loose in her 3,000-square-foot bouncey house. Enlivening! cjhendry.live

MUST STAY:

The first few nights of my stay were at the posh Upper East Side’s Loews Regency New York Hotel—only minutes from Central Park and Madison Avenue. The lobby’s soothing, warm color palette continues into the spacious and comfortable suites. Amenities like Frette linens and bathrobes and state-of-the-art technology are all top of the line. The stay is made even more exceptional by the thoughtful, and very professional staff. loewshotels.com/regency-hotel Suite Spot Loews Regency New York’s plush rooms are a welcomed respite after a long journey through NYC.

MUST GLAM:

Had I known the Loews Regency guestrooms provided Julien Farel blow dryers, I would have packed another pair of boots instead of my own dryer. Uncoincidentally, the Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa is conveniently located inside the hotel. I booked a blowout—one of the best I’ve had! julienfarel.com

MUST VISIT:

One of my favorite NYC spots is The Shed, in Hudson Yards, a cultural center described as the new arts space for the 21st Century. The unofficial word has it that New York Fashion Week is moving here. Stay tuned! Another MUST-see is the brand new Statue of Liberty Museum. I learned so much and was reminded of how lucky I am to be living in America—the greatest country on earth! theshed.org / libertyellisfoundation.org/statueoflibertymuseum

The Beekman Hotel

MUST STAY:

The next few nights of my stay were in Lower Manhattan at The Beekman Hotel, a hidden architectural treasure. Have a drink at the bar and gaze up at the striking, nine-story high Victorian atrium and majestic skylight. It is s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g! thebeekman.com

Heavenly View The Beekman Hotel’s ninestory tall atrium is breathtaking.

New York Met The Metropolitan Museum of Art, home to Anna Wintour’s famed Met Ball.

High Art Samia joyfully travels through Cj Hendry’s art installation— a 3000-sq-ft bouncy house.

Empire State Building

MUST CHOW:

Corso Como has landed in the heart of the Seaport District. Reminiscent of Italy’s cobblestone streets, its location is ideal. Blending art, fashion, design and fine cuisine, this is where you’ll find the latest gadgets on the market as well as rare and expensive fragrances. After shopping, stop by 10 Corso Como Restaurant & Café (led by renowned Chef Jordan Frosolone) to satiate your palate with tasteful Mediterranean dishes inspired by traditional Italian cooking. Try the pasta Carbonara. Simple, but yet sooo yummy! 10corsocomo.nyc

Super-Connector

Karen Murphy O’Brien is the queen of networking. The vivacious, co-founder and CEO of Murphy O’Brien, the PR, marketing and digital firm, is a bridge builder in both her business and philanthropic efforts.

Three blessings? That’s simple. My husband and Murphy O’Brien co-founder, Brett, and our two sons, Nicholas, 20, and Christopher, 17. I am so grateful for their constant presence, loving support, and the laughter they bring to my life. They are my world.

Your passion? I’m a connector. I can’t help it! I enjoy introducing my friends or connecting a client or charity with a journalist or a business/partnership/ donor opportunity. I’m always building bridges between people. It’s what I do best.

Happiest moments? The day I married Brett in an intimate wedding ceremony on a perch in Malibu, and the times I first laid eyes on each of our two boys. Three cherished moments.

Favorite quote? One taped to my computer: “Everything changed the day she figured out there was exactly enough time for the important things in her life.” - Kai Andreas Skye

Favorite charities? There are three! Chrysalis provides formerly homeless and economically challenged men and women a pathway to self-sufficiency through jobs. I have been an active board member since 2003, and our company provides pro bono PR services, in addition to volunteerism. Homelessness is one of the most massive epidemics in LA, Chrysalis is a bright spot in this sad commentary. The National Children’s Chorus representing more than 300 schools nationwide. Our son, Christopher, is a six-year veteran of the NCC and currently sings with the scholars’ ensemble. I am also on the Board of Directors for Visionary Women, a three-year-old non-profit to help empower women and girls to reach their full potential. It’s unique member-based approach showcases a new model of philanthropy.

Fashion style? Relaxed. I’ll wear a pair of AG white jeans paired with a James Perse cotton shirt, or, if I’m at the office, a Missoni dress with my favorite Chanel chunky heel sandals.

Biggest regret? Not having dinner with Frank Sinatra in Las Vegas with my then boss, Jim Mahoney, of Mahoney/Wasserman PR. Instead, I attended a client event I had organized and committed to. Favorite getaway? The Kona Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii and Positano, Italy. Since I travel incessantly, my home in Pacific Palisades is also at the top of the list.

Best trait? My friends would all say I am 100% reliable and dependable in both good times and bad. Embarrassing moment? I’d just started as public relations manager at the Hyatt Regency Maui and was at an event twirling around on the dance floor with the Regional Director of Sales. My lavender wrap dress literally unwrapped and fell to the floor! I don’t know who was more embarrassed . . . him or me?! Favorite hobbies? Travel, playing the piano hiking, biking, and drinking Chardonnay with my bevy of girlfriends! I also collect Christmas tree ornaments from other countries. 5-year plan? The real question for me is, “Who do I hope to be in five years?” I hope to be a better version of myself, so I can make an even more significant impact on the people in my life personally, professionally, and philanthropically.
