GENLUX SAMIA ARSLANE EDITOR IN CHIEF
A Time to Give…and Receive. The holiday season is upon us. Time for GENLUX to bring you a few of our favorite things, starting with our gift guide (p98). We hope it will inspire you to start your shopping early. Check out my personal faves starting with Christian Louboutin, biensûr. After the big success of his nail polish collection, Louboutin introduces Lip Colors in three finishes— Silky Satin, Velvet Matte, and Sheer Voile—showcased in an inspired jewelry box. Ladies, pick your shade! Also check out the consumer-friendly makeup airbrush, the Airpod by Temptu Air. If you need lots of coverage or just a touch, this is ‘your guy.’ It’s so easy to use… I’m addicted. This season I’m in love with two fashion trends, White Out and Camel Back (p108). I’m drooling over the cozy off-white outfit by Talbot Runhof—especially love the wide-leg pants. And I’m dying over the sexy Aquazzura off-white suede over-the-knee boot, and no, I’m not being dramatic. Picture it paired with a mini dress or tight blue jeans and a cashmere sweater. If you’re like me and want even more, check out Burberry’s beautiful patchwork take on the same boot. Just incredibly sexy! But let’s not forget about the color that a lot of fashionable women are wearing right now: camel. The camel coat has been seen on a lot people from Jennifer Lawrence to the Olsen twins. This is one of the most versatile pieces you’ll add to your winter wardrobe.
18 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2015
Other great features we worked on in this issue: David Meister at home photographed by BrakhaX2. We asked David for his professional advice on how to pick the perfect dress—see what he says (p32). We also bring you our beauty editor Beau Dunn’s ‘Red Hot’ Beauty List (p104) and Cecilia’s ‘Keep or Give’ beauty products (p100). We’re beyond excited to have the gorgeous Beverly Johnson on the cover of this issue. Her new book, The Face That Changed it All, recently became a New York Times best-seller. She’s a force of nature and an American icon, who, at 63, is still going strong. Don’t miss her in this article by our fave writer, Courtney Fortune. One of the tenets of GENLUX is philanthropy, and we’re set on featuring the extraordinary women who give back to our society. We’re thrilled to feature one of LA’s finest, Kelly Fisher Katz, with an interview by her friend, and our philanthropy editor, Catherine Williams. Speaking of charity in this time of giving, we employed the help of charitynavigator.org to bring you the Top 10 Best Practices of Savvy Philanthropists. “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind; can see.” – Mark Twain Enjoy the holidays. Giving is receiving. Bisous les amours!

Who is that stylish philanthropist with the model’s good looks who recently completed her tenure as vice chairman of the Kennedy Center’s National Committee for the Performing Arts? That one—the tireless supporter of so many charities including downtown LA’s Dream Center? She’s Kelly Fisher Katz. I spot Kelly Fisher Katz across the living room of the Martin Katz Jewel Suite at the Towers at the New York Palace Hotel in Manhattan. As she glides across the room to greet me (and yes, she glides), I am reminded of why I’m so fond of her. Kelly is one of those rare women who commands attention without demanding it; unfailingly elegant but not without spunk. She’s the fiercely loyal friend who always has your back. “I’m working today, so I’m doing a casual day,” she says, explaining her jeans. Her look of jeans, a Chanel jacket, Alaia walking shoes, and a Birkin slung across her arm is nonetheless photo ready. Kelly insists on a glass of wine as we tour the suite. As part of a $140-million renovation of the New York Palace Hotel, Kelly’s husband, famed jewelry designer Martin Katz, was chosen to design the lavish three-story jewelthemed suite. Martin’s brilliant designs are on display everywhere, but the breathtaking interior design is Kelly’s. As we settle onto a sapphire-blue sofa, it occurs to me that Kelly could easily add ‘sought-after interior designer’ to her already full résumé. “It was a labor of love. We designed everything from the artwork to some of the furniture. Every book I chose is something that Martin is passionate about. Everything reflects the idea of luxurious jewels. When you rent the suite, you live amongst a million dollars worth of jewels.” The Jewel Suite marks the first interior design project for Martin and Kelly, though since winning the prestigious Gold Key award in 2014 for Best Suite, they have had numerous offers to design other hotels, a bar, and even a private plane. “We have to figure out how much we can do. We’re a small team and we are really in the jewelry business. Now I’m into the interior design world. It’s like a new career, which is exciting.” Scheduling is the key. Between traveling for her own career as a spokesperson and voiceover artist, and for her husband’s business, Kelly’s plate is full. But there is always time to indulge her love of fashion. “I love Chanel. I was very blessed to be invited to the couture show in January when Karl Lagerfeld turned the Grand Palais into a brasserie. Oh, my goodness, it
was just incredible!” She gushes about Alexander McQueen, Alaia, and her penchant for collecting Hermès bags. And of course, Tom Ford. “I think he’s a genius and so multi-talented. The man does everything well.” But she is quick to add, “Talking about designers can sound so over the top. I am not always that fancy girl. I really love being in jeans and a t-shirt. That’s my comfort level too.” Beyond her impeccable style, attention must be paid to Kelly’s role as a driven philanthropist. “I get the most satisfaction from helping people and doing my charity work.” She’s a champion for arts education, and I sense her frustration with the lack of artistic opportunities for children. “We don’t have a budget for arts educators in the state of California.” It’s a problem she has worked tirelessly to remedy. Kelly spent years on the board of PS Arts in Los Angeles and just completed her tenure as vice chairman of the Kennedy Center’s National Committee for the Performing Arts, which works to fund and create arts education projects for children. “We want to make sure that every child can be exposed to the arts at some level. You never know how they will be inspired. They could go to a ballet once, be inspired, and it follows them through their life and they wind up in a career in the arts. It’s really all about educating children.” Kelly is also an ardent supporter of the Dream Center in downtown LA. And she isn’t just writing checks. She’s a hands-on participant, counseling drug- and alcohol-addicted men and supporting human-trafficking victims. As she shares several stories of lives that were utterly transformed by the Dream Center, her enthusiasm is contagious. “You can’t help but be moved if you go there; it’s a phenomenal place.” Her compassion and commitment are refreshingly genuine, and seem to bring her own charmed life into focus. “I’m so grateful for my health and my family. And I have the most wonderful friends. We count our blessings whenever we’re together. We talk about it, we acknowledge it. I think if you can get a good group of friends who become your family, that’s a big blessing.” I couldn’t agree more. G

DAVID MEISTER The Genlux Fashion Designer Interview: David Meister. If you weren’t a designer, what was Plan B? Believe it or not...if I didn’t go to design school I was going to go to medical school and be a brain surgeon. Most embarrassing designer moment? I was leaving an event in a white suit (the designer of which will remain nameless) when I bent over and the entire crotch seam from under the zipper up to the back waist ripped open. I wasn’t wearing much under those white pants...NOT a pretty moment. Let’s just say I spent the rest of the night with my jacket tied around my waist. Talk about a fashion don’t! Highlight of your design career? Launching my line 16 years ago and the fact that I am still standing. It’s a crazy, tough business…but I love it. What is your passion? I love fashion and creating things, looking at things in new and different ways. I still get crazy excited when I love a new dress. And I love to make people laugh. Name three blessings. 1) My husband, Alan Siegel, and my best buddy pooch, Petey Siegel-Meister (cutest dog in the world…not biased at all!); 2) My family; and 3) My ability to find humor in almost everything and laugh hysterically. Describe your home décor. My home in LA is very simple, clean, sophisticated and contemporary. Everything is shades of taupey greys. The only color is in the art on the walls that we have collected from trips all over the world. My home in Palm Springs is a different story: 70s glam-mirrors, polished chain curtains, lacquer, white leather with just a touch of ‘bad coke whore’ thrown in for good measure. Everything is black, white and silver. Even the art. David Meister’s Advice on How to Pick the Right Dress. It is all about FIT, FIT and FIT. Your tailor should be one of your best friends. Know what works on your body and what makes you feel good. Even if a dress looks great—if you aren’t comfortable in it, you won’t look good. Always have the right undergarments when trying on clothes. It makes all the difference in the world. A Day in the Life of David Meister. What woke you up this morning and what time? My alarm clock at 8:00 a.m. First call you made and on what type of phone? My publicist Matt Walker (the best ever). i-Phone 6 plus What shampoo/conditioner are you using? Acai What toothpaste? Good old Crest What are you wearing today? White Athletic Apparel T, black drop-crotch sweat shorts, and Givenchy Birkenstocks What watch? I love watches and have several, but have currently been wearing my Cartier Tank Francaise with my Cartier love bracelet. Do you put on your right or left pant leg first? Right
Left or right shirt sleeve first? Right First website you visited? WWD What fragrance did you put on? Geranium Pour Monsieur by Dominique Ropion for Frederic Malle First text you wrote? To my niece Lauren...we have been laughing about a really bad bridesmaid dress she has to wear! First conscious effort? Took Petey for his stroll. Made my chocolate Myoplex shake with peanut butter and a double iced espresso. Read WWD, New York Times, New York Post and some of the blogs and gossip sites. I like to be aware...I HATE it if there is something going on that everyone is talking about and I am unaware. Did you work out? I have my trainer, Boba, at least three times a week at 5:30. I also have to work in my yoga instructor, Ursula, twice a week (I call them my Eastern Block Bitches—they are tough—BUT it works.) I also swim three times a week. What music are you listening to? Love Giorgio Moroder’s new release. Still obsessed with Rhianna. We have Sonos throughout the house...so that or iTunes. What’s the first place you drove to today? I took Petey for grooming. What car are you driving? Black 550 SLS Mercedes with white interior. What did you get done after lunch? I sketched and had fabric appointments. What I love about being a designer is that every day is different. Worked on this questionnaire. What plan for the future did you make today? Started planning our vacation to Cartagena, Columbia. Where will you go for dinner? What might you have? Tower Bar. Sole Almondine. Alan and I have to go out for events or work dinners at least 2-3 times a week. I still love getting dressed up and going out. But I like to be home and in bed by midnight. I need my beauty rest. Also I stick to my two-martini limit unless it’s a celebration and then...watch out! What’s your regimen for getting ready for bed? Brush and floss my teeth, then do my Dr. Lancer skin regimen. Dr. Lancer is my man. I only use his products and I swear by them. In the morning and before bed. I set the alarm and pass out. What haircare products? I am a product whore...I love to try every new product. I usually just reach in the drawer and grab one. What are you reading? Smash Cut by Brad Gooch What are you watching on television? Lots of CNN. Netflix fan. Just saw a fabulous Nina Simone documentary, What Ever Happened to Miss Simone—a must-watch. My guilty pleasure is Empire. I am obsessed with Cookie...love everything about her. Taraji is killing it! What’s something that brought you joy today? Finishing my yoga class in one piece and feeling great afterwards. What’s something that upset you today? I have been lucky so far...nothing at the moment. Who did you meet today? Our friend Santiago, who is in town from Mexico City. What time will you hit the hay? 12:30 G

KIKI SUKEZANE
I
f serendipitous events float your boat, you’ll enjoy the one about actress Kiki Sukezane. Every week for about two years—ever since landing in LA from Japan—the five-footone Kiki, trained at a sword-fighting class in Santa Monica. One day, Lisa McBride, the mother of another student, approached her. “She told me her friend was a casting director for a new show on NBC called Heroes Reborn,” Kiki says in her slightly broken English. “And they happened to be looking for a Japanese girl who could sword-fight.” What are the odds? A few days later, a tape showcasing her martial-arts skills was submitted, and shortly thereafter, an audition was arranged. Needless to say, Kiki nailed it, and now appears as Miko Otomo, the sword-wielding superhero who enters a comic book and slays bad guys as Katana Girl. But if there’s one thing this badass warrior never wants to confront, it’s this. “I hate frogs! They’re soft and green and easy to smash. I don’t even want to think about them. They give me goose bumps.”
If all continues as planned, Kiki hopes to emulate one of her own heroes, Angelina Jolie. “I hope to become deeply involved in humanitarian work. Helping others is why I wanted to be an actor in the first place—to have a bigger voice.” Now, as she’s headed back up to Toronto to finish filming, she also hopes her role on Heroes Reborn gets picked up next year. “Yep, I just hope they make season two.” G

In August of 1974, Beverly Johnson was the first African-American to grace the cover of Vogue. While she became a massive star in the world of glossy magazines and high-profile parties, her personal life would collapse under the weight of addiction, loss, and the unrelenting standards of a cutthroat industry. As COURTNEY FORTUNE finds, Beverly would emerge as an icon, role model, and an author whose new book, The Face That Changed It All recently made it on the New York Times Best Sellers list. everly Johnson is a very busy woman. When I finally catch up with her I can hear the chaos of her everyday life blaring in the background. She’s running errands, wrangling her two dogs, and recovering from last night’s “Ladies That Lead” gala in West Los Angeles. She has also just returned from another book tour for her new memoir, The Face That Changed It All, which recently made the New York Times BestSeller List. Having grown up shy and bookish in her hometown of Buffalo, New York, becoming a supermodel and busting beauty standards wasn’t exactly on the radar for Johnson. Her natural style and dynamic presence would garner attention, and during a summer break from studying law at Northeastern University she got the opportunity to interview with Conde Nast editor Alexander Liberman. He booked her immediately, pulling her into the wild world of professional modeling—and from the moment she stepped in front of the camera she had one goal in mind: to make the cover of Vogue. Her life became a flurry of high-profile shoots with fashion’s famous photographers, and appearances on the pages of Vogue, Glamour and Essence Magazine. Beverly was quickly becoming an ‘it’ girl, but strict standards of conventional beauty held her back from what she really wanted. Even her first agent, the notorious Eileen Ford, who once claimed Beverly (then 5’-9” and 125 pounds) was “too fat,” didn’t believe she could make the Vogue cover. That’s when she left to join Wilhelmina Models and would receive the infamous call that not only launched her into stardom, but made her an icon in the world of fashion and beauty. In August 1974, before covers exclusively featured celebrity faces, it was the job of the models to sell the issue. Models never knew they had made the cover until it hit newsstands, which as grueling as that sounds, definitely made for a better story. So obvious or not, I had to ask, “What was it like to get that call?” She describes throwing on clothes and running full-tilt to the
nearest kiosk, where she waited in line, and upon realizing she didn’t have enough change, was turned away. “I knew being on the cover of Vogue was where I needed to be in my career, but I wasn’t aware of the impact it would have,” she says. “I became an overnight role model, which was something I was not prepared for.” A fresh-faced Beverly Johnson became the first African-American woman to appear on the cover of the landmark fashion magazine, an instant symbol of change and precedence for young black models everywhere. “It was a journey of my self-discovery about race. It was a gift.” In her book she describes how her cover could be found on the shelves of every grocery store and every newsstand—and she wanted the world to know that she wasn’t just a “top black model,” she was a top model. Beverly was a rising star, transforming from girl to icon at lightning speed. There were endless nights of hard partying and star-studded events with friends like Jackie Kennedy, Halston and Andy Warhol, and stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson and Keith Richards. She traveled to exotic locations and walked the walk of the celebrity lifestyle. But with all that came the fabled pitfalls of fast fame. In her memoir, she calls out the industry as a “toxic mix of deceit, manipulation, abuse and backstabbing,” which her collection of experiences can attest to. She was thrust into a world of cutthroat competition, lawless wealth, partying, drug addiction and severe weight management. “I was emotionally stunted in a world that’s all about outside beauty. All of a sudden, as a young girl you have all this money, but you’re naïve, so you make outlandish choices. This life had its own set of rules.” To starve herself to a desired 103 pounds, Beverly would drink black coffee and Champagne and began using cocaine. Drugs were everywhere, accessible and encouraged, and she soon became a full-blown addict. Then in 1983, she suffered a near overdose. She had hit her rock bottom—broke, out of work, and battling her ex-husband, Danny Sims, over the custody of their daughter, Anansa. HOLIDAY 2015 GENLUX 91

The Face That Changed It All by Beverly Johnson with Allison Samuels. Forward by André Leon Talley, Simon & Schuster, hardcover, $28, simonandschuster.com
er book chronicles these truelife experiences with attentive detail—though she’s careful not to preach. “I’m standing my ground in my truth,” she says. “I wanted to tell my story and create an experience for someone, rather than construct some kind of message. This is the real story about my life.” She eventually got help, got her daughter back, and gained new perspective on her life. She was also ready to talk about her secrets. Beverly was in the news this year for revealing that she was drugged by actor/comedian Bill Cosby in his home. At first the chapter describing her experience had been pulled from the book for legal liability, but as more and more women began to emerge, she was given the opportunity to speak out. “Women have been trying to tell their story,” she says. “But people just didn’t want to hear it.” This, she says, is why it was important to talk about it. Beverly Johnson has now entered a new season of her career. She has launched a lifestyle brand, is on tour with her book, and has a possible mini-series in the works. But most important, she’s found happiness in her struggle and redemption—and in her many roles, which include top model, businesswoman, daughter, mother and grandma. It wasn’t easy to relive the trials that defined the rise and fall (and rise again) of this pioneering supermodel, but she is now finding strength in her past. Beverly’s story will continue to ignite and inspire those who aim to defy expectations in the fashion world and beyond. “I’m smarter than I’ve ever been, stronger than I ever thought, and having the best time of my life.” G

For this page I have been asked to not be political. I understand. Fashion is fashion and it loves to be ‘light,’ except in the case of Vivienne Westwood, who is fighting for the welfare of the planet and asking us to be sensible and correct about the clothes we wear. “Buy less and buy better,” she fights. Fashion Week passed, the Cannes Film Festival passed, and thank goodness I had enough black dresses. I am now in love with costumes for films. This year, the delicious costumes for the new film Carol have made me realize how attractive the hat is and that gloves are ready to come back into fashion. Cate Blanchett looked every inch a Hollywood star. It took me back to the 1960s when it was fashionable to eat at the table and talk with other people—the dinner party, the ball. “People who eat together stay together” has been imprinted on my brain since I was a child. Lately, I’m having fun with all of the online dating sites, though I feel I have no feelings left for love...Oh, yes I have! Getting ready for a date is so much fun—the whole meeting is such an adventure. One thing’s for sure, I am not interested in meeting men in fields and woods, as my shoes just don’t match the terrain. CHARITY REPORT
GENLUXSHOP TOP 10 BEST PRACTICES OF SAVVY PHILANTHROPISTS Before you commit to helping out that charity, follow these tips from CHARITYNAVIGATOR.COM to ensure your money really makes a difference.
1
3
Time, Not Money, Well Spent Don’t give reactively in a knee-jerk fashion. Take the time to identify which causes are most important to your family, and be specific about the change you want to effect. For example, instead of supporting generic cancer charities, try targeted goals for your giving.
2
Hang Up the Phone, Lock Up Your Valuables Recognize that for-profit fundraisers, those often used in charitable telemarketing campaigns, keep a large portion (in some cases all) of each dollar they collect. Never give out your personal information— like credit card accounts or Social Security numbers—over the phone. If you like what you hear in the pitch, hang up, investigate the charity online, and send your contribution directly to the charity to ensure that 100% of your donation reaches its intended destination. Taking it a step further, support a charity that does not use telemarketing to raise funds.
98 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2015
Beware of Charities with Sound-Alike Names Don’t be confused by charities that have strikingly similar names. How many of us could tell the difference between an appeal from the Children’s Charity Fund and the Children’s Defense Fund? Their names sound the same, but their performances are vastly different. Would you be surprised to learn that the Children’s Charity Fund is a 0-star charity, while the Children’s Defense Fund is a 3-star charity?
4
Confirm 501(c) (3) Status Only support groups granted tax-exempt status under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. All of the charities evaluated by CharityNavigator.com meet this basic requirement.
5
Get the info! Check Their Commitment to Accountable and Transparent Check with CharityNavigator. com to see if the charity uses an objective process to determine their CEO’s salary, whether it has an effective governance structure, and whether it has a whistleblower policy. This information is critical because charities that follow good governance and transparency practices are less likely to engage in unethical or irresponsible activities.
6
Get and Review Financial Records The financial health of a charity is a strong indicator of its programmatic performance. In most cause areas, the most efficient charities spend 75% or more of their budgets on their programs and services and less than 25% on fundraising and administrative fees. A charity’s ability to sustain its programs over time is just as important as its short-term day-to-day spending practices. All of this analysis is provided on CharityNavigator.com for free, but when considering groups not found there, ask the charity for copies of its three most recent Forms 990. Not only can you examine the charity’s finances, but its willingness to send the documents is a good way to assess its transparency.
7
Review and Examine Executive Compensation Sophisticated donors understand that charities need to pay their top leaders a competitive salary in order retain the talent necessary to run a multimillion-dollar organization and produce results. But they also don’t just take the CEO’s compensation at face value; they benchmark it against similar-sized organizations engaged in similar work in a similar region of the country. It’s better to contribute to a charity with a well-paid CEO that’s meeting its goals than to support a charity with an underpaid CEO that fails to deliver.
8
Start a Dialogue Before making a contribution, talk with the charity to learn about its accomplishments, goals and challenges. Be prepared to walk away from any charity that is unable or unwilling to participate in this type of conversation.
9
Concentrate Your Giving When it comes to financial investments, diversification is the key to reducing risk. Not so for philanthropic giving. Take the time to identify a well-run charity that’s engaged in a cause that you’re passionate about, and to which you feel confident in donating. Spreading your money among multiple organizations not only results in your mailbox filling up with more appeals, it also dilutes the possibility of substantive change, since each charity is wasting part of your gift on processing expenses for that gift.
10
Make a LongTerm Commitment Support your favorite charities for the long haul. Be a partner in their efforts to bring about change. And don’t hesitate to tell the charity of your giving plans so it knows it can rely on your donation and doesn’t have to waste resources and harass you by sending numerous solicitations.

The Not So Permanent Makeup
Beauty trends are ever-changing, which is why the notion of permanent makeup—brows, eyeliner and lips—makes us a little apprehensive. Rightly so; this is your face, after all, and you’ve only got one.

We found that traditional tattoos use strong machinery and pigments that go deep into several layers of the skin. This results in pigments staying for many years, and over time discoloring the skin. Permanent makeup, on the other hand, gives you a natural look that affects only the first layer of the skin and will eventually fade away with time without leaving a scar. After months of researching the subject, we finally met with Mojgan Azimi. A well-respected permanentmakeup artist with more than twenty years of experience, Mojgan specializes in naturally restoring youthful facial appearance. Here, she answers our GENLUX Two-Word Questionnaire. Your Passion? I’ve always loved making people feel beautiful. I believe that some are born with a talent to see the beauty in everything in life. Common Question? “Will permanent makeup look natural?” Popular Procedure? Eyebrows are still the number one procedure— though many people still don’t know about it. I start by drawing the natural shape of the eyebrows, stroking each strand of hair one by one, which will give a natural look. Other trends are microneedling,

which is used to eliminate scars, wrinkles and stretch marks, and melatonin restoration, a procedure that helps restore melanin back to the surface naturally. How Safe? Absolutely safe. All of our supplies are disposable; everything is properly discarded after each single use to eliminate any chance of cross-contamination. We use the highest-quality cleaning materials and supplies to disinfect our equipment, chairs and stations. How Permanent? It begins to fade within six months to three years. How Much? The cost depends on each procedure. An estimate for lips is between $1200 and $2500. How Painful? That varies according to each individual. Some people feel that certain areas are more sensitive than others. A variety of topical anesthetics are available and are used as needed to help numb the treated area to help alleviate any minor discomfort. DON’T TOUCH ME
GENLUX discovers the most innovative new fat-busting treatment is found at
Halcyon Dermatology in Laguna Hills. It’s completely safe, the results are immediate, and the best part...it doesn’t even come in contact with your body. Melt My Waistline The Vanquish treatment is 100 percent non-invasive with immediate results
Dr. Kathy Lee, board-certified dermatologist of Halcyon Dermatology, chimes in on the latest weapon in fighting the battle of the bulge—that abdominal problem area facing both women and men. Here, we ask her about this new treatment. What is Vanquish? It’s the next generation of a really good concept of body contouring that started with freezing for the eroding of fat. The downside of fat-freezing is that doctors could only treat a small area, and it was only for pinchable fat. With Vanquish, we’re able to treat large or small areas and you will see results quickly. The other good news is that it doesn’t come in contact with the body, so it’s completely non-invasive. You merely lie under it and Vanquish’s radio frequency is converted to heat, so it’s very safe. Who is a candidate for this treatment? Both men and women. Men, as they get older, tend to get a stomach bulge which is a very hard area to exercise away, and this is a great way to get immediate results. The people who respond the best are those with the most fat. It’s not a cure for obesity, but the treatment looks for fat and works. It’s an enhancement for those who are leading healthy lifestyles—not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle. You shouldn’t do Vanquish and then go eat a bunch of tacos. It’s also for those who are overweight and want to get a jump start.
BEAUTY BREAKTHROUGH
GENLUXSHOP
What areas can be treated? The abdomen is the most commonly treated. It’s also for the back and thighs, and can be used to treat the arms. It’s also very popular to even-out symmetry, some of which has been altered by other treatments. Where does the fat go? It exits our body through the waste system. That’s why it’s important that you drink eight glasses of water before the treatment.
Thale Blanc Gypsy gray lambskin with beaded suede strap, $242, Fred Segal, LA, 323-651-4129
Fat Breakthrough Device uses radiofrequency to locate and destroy fat
What kind of results can I expect? After three treatments, most experience between a two- and four-inch reduction at the waist. Is there a body-fat range for which the treatment works best? We treat patients as low as 8 percent and up to 40 percent body fat. Those with 20 percent respond very well. Is there any pain because of the treatment? The treatment does cause a focal area of swelling. That goes away, but it’s a predictor of a good result. It feels like a bruise underneath the skin, but it’s not necessarily a negative thing, because it usually means the results will be better. What’s the cost of the treatment? Typically about $700–$800 per treatment, but there are substantial discounts with packages of three to four sessions. Leading Lady
Samantha Theaumont is the driven creative force behind successful
spa810 who has her sights set on being a dominant player in the med spa franchise arena. Here, she takes on our GENLUX Two-Word Questionnaire.
Last dream? My dreams are always very lucid. I dreamt last night that I was waiting for a business meeting to start and I was all alone with my first pet, a Siamese cat. Your passion? I’m a tenacious business builder. I will never be satisfied until spa810 dominates the market for boutique med-spa franchises. The support that I have from my family and friends allows me to focus and absorb my work into my lifestyle. It’s a passion when you wake up each day doing exactly what you love to do. Your obsession? College football. I am a Buckeye, born and bred. I haven’t listened to music on my commutes in months. I’m glued to College Talk Radio on Sirius, keeping up on all the stats from all the top 25 teams. It’s been an exciting year for all college football fans, but last season the Ohio State Buckeyes pulled off a dream season. Guilty pleasure? Listening to Ryan Adams. He is incredibly prolific. Happiest moment? When my husband and I learned we were expecting our first child. Four years of trying to conceive and finally a miracle. Today we are blessed with three healthy, beautiful children. Memorable achievement? Spa810 was a finalist for the Phoenix Business Journal’s Arizona’s Franchise Excellence Awards in the category of Best New Concept. Beauty secret? Organic virgin coconut oil. I could name about 50 health benefits and beauty tips using my favorite Tiana Coconut Oil.
BEAUTYPROFILE
GENLUXSHOP
Fashion style? Boho-Chic. I love all the funky elements and the exotic zing of fashion. My closet is a rich cocktail of casual, hippie, 70s style and ethnic along with vintage. It’s cool, hip, and definitely feminine, in a rugged and effortless way! Style icons? My enduring style icon is, and always will be Kate Moss. And, admittedly, my style icon of the aughts was Sienna Miller. Favorite designer? I am really drawn to the classics and colors of Kate Spade for my business style. My everyday casual go-to shops are Anthropologie and Free People. Plan B? If I weren’t with spa810 I would pursue full-time motherhood. I love everything about family life. Our traditions, our special moments, our secrets and our dreams. Life is too short and children grow up before our eyes. I definitely cherish every moment. Favorite place? My children take me to my favorite place every night during our story-time hour. There’s something magical and sweet about spending the quiet hours of my day with my children giving cuddles and kisses and then being there when they fall asleep. Favorite quote? Audrey Hepburn said “Elegance is the only beauty that never fades.” You’re reading? I’m re-reading Blue Ocean Strategy Your heroes? My parents. They gave up their lives for us. I have four younger brothers and we were a real handful growing up. In the midst of the chaos, my parents taught us how to be selfless, ethical and moral, teaching us important life lessons and how to love and live an honest life. I really didn’t appreciate the life lessons until I began teaching my children about values. Character trait? Compassionate DNA change? I would like to learn how to relax more and enjoy that well-deserved nap. I am very high-strung and manic. Your hobbies? I love my Nikon. Rarely am I in a photo, as I’m always the one capturing the memories. Embarrassing moment? My mom used to have me compete in beauty pageants. I was being interviewed on stage in front of a panel of judges and the audience, and was asked what I wanted to be when I grow up. I wanted to say a teacher, because it was the profession I could most relate to as a child. Using my feelings toward the interviewer, I said I wanted to be a lawyer “to put bad guys like YOU in jail.” The audience went silent. Favorite charity? I’m a graduate of Ohio State University. I believe in community and culture; this was engrained in my moral fiber as a child. The Young Buckeyes of Phoenix host a Breast Cancer Awareness. Their mission is to provide a community development platform for the local Ohio State Alumni Clubs which encourages a higher level of alumni engagement at the local club level. Their goal is to raise funds and strengthen awareness about prevention, detection, and treatment of breast cancer for the The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Flower or Gardener? I’m the gardener. The gardener tends his plants regularly. It is not simply a part of his job, it is his main task. It’s not necessary to tend every plant every day in the same way; however, the gardener’s care of the plants is based on their individual needs, in the light of the growth of the whole garden. Similarly, listening to one’s people and nurturing them must be an ongoing responsibility of a leader, as well as making sure that the actual organization’s development is in alignment with its basic purpose and mission.

SERIOUSLY, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT...

This little gem of a jacket comes to us from our Louis Vuitton specialist, Nadine DaNardo, from the Beverly Hills store. When Nadine calls, I go a running because I know she has something fabulous to show…and fabulous it was! This shearling jacket is hand-sewn with embroidered patches, and raw shearling backing lines the inside, making this jacket just about as warm and cozy as it is beautiful. I squealed with delight when I saw it from afar. The closer I got, the more beautiful it became, as the details are so stunning that “stunning,” when it comes to this jacket, is an understatement. Any woman on your list would faint to find this under the tree. That I can promise! Louis Vuitton jacket, $14,000, Louis Vuitton, Beverly Hills, 310-859-0457

GENLUXSHOP Spice is in the Air
There is a spice in the air that resonates boldly through the home and fashion world trends. Think touches of Kubla Khan–like splendor and an exotic penchant for all things luxurious, embellished and decadent. Turkish inspirations abound from wallpapers to clutches. I love this style. Take inspiration from the great palaces of Istanbul and the indigenous woven silks, called Ikats, that mesmerized the 17th and 18th century travelers to Turkey, creating trade routes to supply the world with these colorful temptations. —Martyn Lawrence Bullard My collection this season is much inspired by the Turkish tea room that legendary decorator Renzo Mongiardino created in New York’s Carlyle Hotel. These magical small rooms have been the talk of the town for decades and still entice the ‘it crowd’ for cozy cocktails. I’ve taken his gilded and lapis-colored murals and translated their Ottoman arabesque designs into a wallpaper and fabric collection that’s both exciting and florid and pays homage to the history of both place and person.

PROFILE ARTIST

WORKS OF HEART
Alexander Yulish was born in NYC, the son of famed artist and
sculptor Barbara Pearlman. His latest exhibition is currently on view at Ace Gallery in Beverly Hills. The artist currently resides in LA where we caught up with him to answer our GENLUX Two-Word Questionnaire. Why art? In general, art is human expression that has the ability to move people in so many profound ways. To me art is about intimacy. I’m interested in exploring interior landscapes. I use the brush like a blowtorch to melt away the surface and express what lies below. I never know what I will uncover, and that unpredictability is what draws me to paint. Future projects? I’ll be doing a joint show with my mother. It’s always been a dream of mine to have a show with her. Your talent? I don’t know if it’s talent, but I think of my work as honesty. Favorite work? My last piece. It’s a big one, 10’ x 16’. It’s a really balanced painting and extremely aggressive at the same time. I’m very happy with it right now. My favorite painting always changes depending on the mood I’m in. First exhibition? It was at Gallery Brown in Los Angeles. My friends, family and the people I really cared about were there. It was one of the most beautiful days of my life. Artist affinity? Cecily Brown. I just feel really connected to her work. It really strikes a chord in me. I feel her work is deeply personal and risky. Favorite artists? Francis Bacon, William de Kooning, Picasso. And Chaim Soutine is my all-time favorite right now.

Favorite museum? I love so many, but I l just got back from visiting the museum at Yale. The pieces there are absolutely spectacular. I left there completely blown away and inspired. .
Favorite galleries? A few of my favorites are Mnuchin Gallery, Blum & Poe, Lehmann Maupin Gallery. Plan B? I can’t imagine doing anything else. This question completely terrifies me. When I’m having a bad day in the studio I constantly think the worst-case scenario and that I will have to find another line of work. But I always come out the other side. Bravest moment? This is an insanely tough question. The quote by Oscar Wilde, “Just be yourself; everyone else is already taken,” has always struck a chord with me. Just trying to be okay with who you are and fighting for that freedom every day is a small emotional battle. I try to be brave every day and accept myself so I can be useful to others in this crazy world.
Forget the jet! Just down the coast from LA is the Montage Laguna Beach Time is precious—and shorter these days with the recent time change. So when making our family weekend travel plans, I tried to find a spot that wasn’t too far, but felt like a real getaway. Then it hit me. Only about an hour’s drive south of LA is a 30-acre oceanfront utopia... the Montage Laguna Beach.
MUST STAY:
All of the Montage’s spacious beachfront guestrooms offer an ocean view. We love our bathroom time, and the hotel offers marble bathrooms with oversized tubs, lavish bath amenities and candles, 100% cotton Irish-woven towels and plush robes.
MUST PLAY:
The Montage has excellent beach access. Spend the day lazing about, watching families play in the water, read a good book, check your Facebook status (on second thought, keep your electronic devices at home), all from the comfort of your chaise lounge right by the water’s edge. Oh, and did I mention they offer beachside service?

It features stunning views—the perfect backdrop for enjoying good company, conversation and cuisine. Try the butter poached monk fish in a yummy lobster sauce. MUST SPA:
Spa Montage, a 20,000-square-foot oceanfront spa featuring ocean-inspired therapies. I reveled in the Elements of Wellness Signature Facial. Make sure to prep your skin for treatments by taking advantage of the spa facilities. They’re absolutely gorgeous. Afterwards, I enjoyed a cup of detox tea on the pool patio with 180-degree views of the ocean. You’ll never want your treatment to end, and you won’t want to leave this place.

Iconic Australian luxury swimwear and resort label Zimmermann is synonymous with bold prints and feminine, modern shapes that perfectly embody summertime in Sydney—a vision that continues to resonate with designer and founder Nicky Zimmermann. Having learned to sew at an early age, Nicky always had a fascination with cutting, sewing and creating new patterns in her Southern Sydney home. After showcasing her natural talent at East Sydney TAFE, Nicky began selling her pieces at the Paddington markets, where she was first spotted and featured by Australian Vogue. That was when the real momentum began. In 1991, her sister Simone joined the growing business and together they took their first leap into high-fashion swimwear. At the inaugural Australian Fashion Week in 1996, the sisters premiered their daring original designs, beautifully made onepieces, bikinis and stylish swimwear. The Zimmermann label was launched to immediate success in Australia and beyond, and the brand continues to expand their collections of seasonal ready-to-wear, cruise and resort pieces. Nicky Zimmermann has been the recipient of multiple fashion awards including AFI Best Swimwear Designer and the Australian Fashion Laureate Award. She currently serves on the founding board for the Australian Fashion Chamber. With so much sun and fun in Sydney, what does Nicky do when she visits LA? Vintage shopping and and drinks at Chateau Marmont, of course! –Courtney Fortune
On and Off the Plane Where do you stay? Chateau Marmont is one of my favorite hotels anywhere – it’s like a little sanctuary, from another time. And Shutters, if I want to be near the water.

How do you make your hotel room feel more like home? I don’t, really. I love that it’s not the same as home and that there’s great mini-bars with Twizzlers in them!
What are your packing essentials for LA? I take lots of our swim dresses for day and a Balenciaga leather jacket to throw over things at night. Red-eye or morning flight? I live in Sydney—every flight is a red-eye!

How do you look refreshed after a long flight? I moisturize as much as possible using Kat Burki: it’s a new range of skin care. I love the cold-pressed oils. I also use eye drops and try to get as much sleep as I can. I’m not sure if works or not…
Zimmermann Alchemy bonded flutter swimsuit, $740
What do you wish LA had more of that you have in Sydney? I find it a bit harder to find coffee that I like in LA, but I wouldn’t want to change anything really. Oh, and the prawns… sorry, shrimp…are better in Sydney. What do you wish Sydney had that LA has? Some good hotels. I don’t need hotels at home, obviously, but it would be nice if there were some great places where friends can stay when they’re in town that have a fun bar or a great restaurant. Los Angeles does that well. And I love the canyons and doing those walks—maybe Sydney could get a canyon or two!
Zimmerman‛s LA Favorites Shops: I really like how easy the Barneys is in Beverly Hills. And vintage at the Way We Wore on La Brea. Just One Eye is worth visiting.
Restaurants: Nobu in Malibu, and Pace in Laurel Canyon for something quiet with my family.
