I
get a text from Sonja Kinski. It says, “Let’s meet for coffee at The Bungalow on Larchmont at 1.” When I arrive, she’s waiting outside the restaurant wearing a vintage-looking ‘Alice in Wonderland’ T-shirt, black Nike leggings, Nike running shoes and a pair of cool Topshop sunglasses. Her thick, long, dark-brown wavy hair is framing a face glowing from a recent Aida Thibiant facial. She looks strikingly like her mother, actress Nastassja Kinski.
Sonja politely jumps up from the wooden bench to her 5-foot10-inch height, gives me a hug, and in her usual self-deprecating manner, apologizes for her casual outfit. “This is my everyday look,” she says, adding, “I’m so lazy.” Sonja’s been on a long unwelcome break from modeling ever since one frightful morning five years ago when she awoke unable to move the right side of her mouth. She thought she’d had a stroke. A diagnosis pointed toward Bell’s palsy, a facial nerve disorder that causes paralysis to only one side of the face. Typically, things get better in a few months—Sonja’s recovery has taken much longer. “I was a die-hard junkie (she’s been sober five years now), and I didn’t get the needed rest to heal,” she confesses. “I kept partying, pretending like it didn’t happen.” Though she’s visibly self-conscious about her appearance—often working her hand to her mouth when she feels the need to hide it—she claims she’s no longer upset about it. “It’s crazy. I’ve had so many ups and downs in my life. From the time I was born to age 12, I grew up a really ugly kid. I looked like a man. I swear. I was taller than all of the boys in my class and I was chubby. It was awful, and then, all of a sudden I got pretty and became popular with guys. And then this happened to me. It truly humbled me. People treat you differently when something is wrong with you. I’m seeing people for who they are—and when they’re being genuine.” Last week, with a little coaxing from stylist Oretta Corbelli, Sonja modeled for this Genlux spread by Italian lensman Francesco Licata. The team took inspiration from Wim Wenders’ 1984 film Paris, Texas, one of the movies,
along with Tess and Cat People, that put Nastassja Kinski on the map. The stunning images from our photoshoot show no indication of Sonja’s facial condition. Still, model agencies are reluctant to sign her. “They don’t like it,” she says sadly. Born Sonja Leila Moussa on March 2, 1986, in Geneva, Switzerland, she’s the second child of Nastassja Kinski’s marriage to film producer Ibrahim Moussa. Sonja’s brother, Aljosha, is two years older. She was six when her family moved to the United States, where, she entered school speaking only Italian, and remembers being teased about it. Sonja’s father, who passed away in 2012, was a charismatic man who fled from his native Egypt to Rome, met and somehow convinced Federico Fellini to direct the 1987 film Inter vista. “I loved my father so much,” Sonja says. “He had the best sense of humor, and so does my mom, something I’ve grown to appreciate in others. His passing was very traumatic and unexpected, the saddest time of my life, but I finally feel at peace with it.” Sonja’s parents divorced in 1992—the same year Nastassja met music producer Quincy Jones. Their three-year relationship produced yet another Kinski beauty, Kenya Kinski-Jones, 23, a very successful New York model. Sonja’s high-school years at Pali High in the ritzy Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles were not particularly fun. “I hated it!” she exclaims. “I didn’t fit in with anyone, and I was awkward. I created this whole ‘other’ life that I used to escape to—a club life with my older friends.” These days, Sonja is active in animal charities and is especially supportive of a nonprofit that Kenya finds dear to her heart. “It’s called Last Chance for Animals—a charity that’s working toward saving the diminishing gorilla population.” lcasavinggorillas.org As Sonja slowly regains control over her bout with Bell’s palsy, she’s saving up the $25,000 for a hopeful surgical cure, in which, she says, “the surgeons have a way of curing this by moving nerves around.” She’s also excited to get back into modeling and acting. “Acting makes me who I am,” she says confidently. “I know I’m not defined by any material things or by my looks. What’s inside is more important. I feel good about myself right now, and the older I get, the more I want to simplify and slow down. That’s where I’m going. I want to meditate more and have space between my thoughts.”

VA VA VREELAND
Curvaceous Caroline Vreeland is, you guessed it, related to the icon of fashion icons, Diana Vreeland. As our STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER
finds, this great-granddaugher of the famed Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue editor is equally sharp-tongued, witty, freespirited, passionate about fashion and ready to set her own stage afire

aroline Vreeland steps through the front door of the tiny, dimly lit bar area of Café Stella in Los Feliz where she’s arranged to meet me, and all heads turn. Perhaps not because of her lovely face, bright blonde hair, or fabulous Christian Louboutin strappy sandals— though, those could certainly be the reason—but more likely because of her noticeably ample bustline which is busting out of her tight, red dress. The precise measurement is a 32F—yes, F, as in Frank.

Caroline adjusts the top of her dress, declaring, “Sometimes they just don’t cooperate.” Since we’re going there, dare we ask? “Yes, they’re mine. I was flat my whole life,” she replies, “When I started taking the pill at 18 I suddenly grew. I would never want boobs this big. Anyone who knows me, they know I’ve always tried to hide them. I’ve thought about a reduction, but I would never go under the knife.” She pauses, adding, “We’ll talk after I have kids and they’re down to my knees.” If Caroline’s last name seems familiar, yes, she’s related to that Vreeland. Diana Vreeland, the bellwether force of fashion who helmed both Harper’s Bazaar (1936 to 1962), and Vogue magazine (1963 to 1971). She was Caroline’s mother’s father’s mother, or greatgrandmother. Their kinship is evident. Both are remarkably smart, outspoken and gregarious, charismatic, witty, and charming, sometimes crass, definitely passionate about life and especially so about fashion. “I love my connection to Diana. She gave me the courage and bravery to take risks.” Surprisingly, it wasn’t her love of fashion that thrust Caroline into modeling; it was a budding singing career in need of a big PR boost. The handle ‘Vreeland’ served as the
rocket fuel. Lucky for her, the fashion community, with their awe of Diana ever waxing, was eager to climb on board. She signed with Next Models who promptly shot Caroline straight for the moon. “The very first editorial they sent me on was for Vogue Italia with Michel Comte,” says Caroline. “It was a swimwear story with another model. I’m in hair and makeup for two hours, but when I try on the suits, no matter how much they squished my boobs, none would fit. So Michel comes over and whispers, ‘I’m sorry honey, but it’s not going to work out this time.’ So with all of the people around, I had to shuffle down the long driveway with my robe on, just mortified.” Humiliated, but not knocked off course—another style icon would step up and come to her rescue. Carine Roitfeld, the former editor of French Vogue, was helming a new magazine that bore her initials, CR. “She saw me as me,” Caroline says. “Instead of trying to fit me into an editorial, she created an editorial to fit me. Before the shoot, Carine wrote me a note, ‘I know about the boobs, darling, it’s ALL about the boobs!’ She brought me to Paris for the shoot and even had this

And so am I.” Caroline, who is recently off not one but two relationships over the past year—one male and one female—sips her white wine, takes a deep breath and shares her story. “My legal name is Caroline Olivia Zickerick. I was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Belvedere up in the Bay area. I have a sister, Alexandra, who’s 28. We have both German and American citizenship because my dad’s German. He moved our family to Jamaica for four months, where he served as the country’s German ambassador. My parents were together for only a few years when one day my mom got a call from a woman saying she was having my father’s child. So my mom moved us to live on an Ashram under Gurumayi where my aunt was living in upstate New York. I remember knowing from an early age that if my parents didn’t love each other, they shouldn’t be together.” Last month, on a trip to Milan, after years of not seeing each other, Caroline reconnected with her father. “I’ve tried over the years to make things work with him. He just retired and lives outside of Munich. So he drove to meet me, and we had a nice dinner. Growing up, he wasn’t a part of my life or trying to be part of my life. My dad has a dark side, and so do I. To my mother’s credit, she never spoke a bad word about him to us.” Our conversation turns to president-elect Donald Trump, and Caroline’s demeanor
goes south. “I was so shaken and so numb and hopeless,” she says somberly. “In light of everything, we’re going to have to stand up and protect our Muslim and LGBT friends. I’m focusing my charity efforts on those communities. We need to initiate the #I’llridewithyou campaign like they did in Australia last year. When someone isn’t feeling safe, either because of who they are, or what religious clothing they wear, we can help them by riding along with them.” We jump on the subject of books and Caroline rattles off her favorite authors. “When I want to take myself outside of the world, I’ll crack open anything Russian. I like to wallow in that mind-fuck darkness of Dostoyevsky, Chekhov or Nabokov (one of Caroline’s ten tattoos quotes from Nabokov’s Lolita: ‘light of my life, fire of my loins’). Right now I’m reading Vladimir Sorokin’s T he Queue. Or, if I really want to lose myself and relax, there’s Haruki Murakami—he takes basic everyday life in Tokyo-slash-cats can speak, and fish can fly.” “I think I can announce...” Caroline starts off, before suddenly letting out three mousesize sneezes, “…that I’m on FOX’s new show, Star, directed by Lee Daniels (Monster’s Ball, Precious, Empire). I play Mary Davis, a heroinaddicted mother, who appears in flashbacks. And the best news is I sing on the first two episodes. Lee’s friend found me on Instagram and through my music, it led me to this role.” In parting, I ask Caroline for a Diana Vreeland quote to conclude our interview. She looks up for a second or two, and says, “Never fear being vulgar, just boring.”

T
hose soaring cheek bones and that killer figure steaming up Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues for eight straight years belongs to Aussie beauty Jessica Gomes. Now the face of iconic Australian retailer David Jones, this hard-working model has two films coming out soon, and even has her very own skincare line called Equal Beauty. Whew! Here, Jessica answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire:
GPS position? I’m in Melbourne, Australia. Well actually, I’m talking to you from the back of a car on my way to Melbourne Airport. You’re wearing? I have on Rebecca Vallance leather pants, a Rails T-shirt and Rails flannel, Daniel Patrick washed denim jacket, Stuart Weitzman buckle motorcycle boots, and Celine sunglasses. I’m carrying a Saint Laurent messenger bag. I’m all rockstar’d out. Your background? My mom is Chinese, and my dad is Portuguese. Superhero trait? I really am like a ninja. I go through life in a very Zen-like way, but still getting things done. Work history? I’ve shot Sports Illustrated for eight years (2008 to 2015), I have two films coming out next year, and I have a TV show in Korea. I’m excited to say I have one of the most lucrative modeling contracts in Australia. It’s for David Jones—such a great company. Dream gig? I dream of being the brand ambassador for Saint Laurent, one of my favorite designers—just the ultimate cool, and it fits my lifestyle. And of course for CHANEL.
Style sense? In five words, I would say I’m rock ‘n’ roll, timeless, relaxed, chic, and easy. I’ve found my sense of style through my work in fashion and six years living in New York. I love good-quality designs and having key pieces. I’m not a trend girl. Your diet? I’m a big foodie. Food for me is a celebration; it makes me happy! I eat healthily. I have my green juice for breakfast and my eggs. I do eat meat and love good hearty food. Best trait? I’m a hard worker. I’ve worked very hard to get where I am today. No one has given me anything. I started modeling in Asia at 17. Your passion? I love storytelling in any way—through clothes, art, beauty, film, or my new skincare line, Equal Beauty. Equal Beauty? The name comes from the understanding that every woman should aspire to her own sense of beauty and feel good about herself. I’m sharing my journey and the side of me that people may not know. My travels to Seoul allowed me to research this skincare—something I’ve always been passionate about. It’s a clean, simple, easy-to-use, super-hydrating system that travels well. Good skin really is a lifestyle and a reflection of your health.

Party girl? I found out that Jennifer Lopez doesn’t drink, so I don’t drink. She looks amazing. Plus, I don’t have time for a hangover.
Embarrassing moment? I have them all the time. While on set for Sports Illustrated, one of the crew brought out a fake snake and I basically jumped out of my skin.
Weirdest food? I’ve been offered a lot of weird things to eat in China. I’ve tried kangaroo jerky, but I didn’t know it was kangaroo. I thought it was beef jerky.
Trading places? I feel like we just don’t know what anyone is going through behind closed doors, so I wouldn’t trade places with anyone. I love my life.
Charity work? I’ve been spending time traveling for World Vision. We went to Peru where I’ve gone to some rough areas and worked with children who have special needs.
Night or morning? I’m a morning person.
Girl’s girl? I’m definitely a girl’s girl. I love my girlfriends and have a lot of them. Love hangin’ with my girls…well, and my guy friends too. I love people in the creative arts and doing creative things. Childhood bullying? Of course I was. I was the only Asian in the schools where I grew up. They said mean things like “Go back to your own country.” I was quite introverted and shy in school, and that’s probably why I was teased. I remember in high school being in class and thinking how I couldn’t wait to travel to get out of there. I’m driven, and I think that maybe it’s from those experiences. DNA change? Finally, at my age, I’m pretty happy with what I’ve been given. Sometimes I wish I had a six-pack or could make my hair grow really long. I love really long, long hair. Wisdom boost? I read a lot. I also watch all of Teresa Palmer’s videos about juggling life. I love watching the Conversations with Amanda de Cadenet. I also receive a lot of wisdom from my older sisters. Spiritual path? I’m from a close family. My parents taught us about being good people and doing right by people and to be kind. I have really good friends and a really great support network. I’m really happy.
74 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2016
Workout regimen? I love to box and have a great trainer. I love to dance. I do Tracy Anderson. I love hikes, Pilates, and being outdoors. Favorite sports? Basketball and tennis. Sports teams? I love the New York Knicks and the Portuguese soccer team—they just won the European Cup. Forever piece? My black velvet Saint Laurent blazer. Forever shoe? My quilted leather CHANEL ballet flats. I love a flat. I’m a flats girl, not a heels girl. Your heroes? My parents. They worked so hard to bring up four children in Australia. English wasn’t their first language. My father emigrated from Portugal and Paris, and my mom from Hong Kong and Singapore. Two languages and races coming together. They stuck it out and they’re still married and in love. They still go dancing together. They miss each other when they’re apart. They’re just cool people. Blind date? Not into it. Not into the setup thing. I’m not into dating. Dinner plans? I don’t know what I’m having. I have to go to a David Jones Christmas party to launch the Christmas campaign. Best date? It was so awesome, it was unexplainable (laughs). It really was. It was so magical I can’t even explain it.

CHARITY REPORT

Donor Alert: How to Avoid Online Scammers
Your decision to make a donation is generous, and more and more donors are choosing to give online. But then again, what about the stories of online scammers who steal not just money but also personal information? Here are some tips to protect yourself and ensure that your money gets to the causes you wish to support.
Be smart about responding to email solicitations. Unlike postal mail, emails from charities are usually a result of your having provided your contact information directly to that charity. You could have done this intentionally, like signing up for an e-newsletter or action alerts from an organization you follow. If you made a donation to an organization online, signed an online petition, or responded to a survey—perhaps through social media— you also provided your email information. Doing so is implied, if not specific, permission for that organization to continue to contact you via email until or unless you tell them not to by opting out. Email messages you receive from a charity you have supported in the past are likely legitimate. If you have any doubt, it’s always best to go directly to their website—every charity rated by CharityNavigator.org includes a link to the charity’s legitimate website—rather than clicking the links in the email. Be skeptical of email solicitations from charities you’ve not heard of or haven’t in some way supported or contacted. Despite how official an email may seem, it could be a scam. Do not follow any links within the message. If you’re interested in the organization and want to learn more about it, here again, the best starting point is to check to see if it’s rated by Charity Navigator and then contact the organization directly to learn more. Beware of requests to send money overseas. As a rule, any organization requesting that you send funds to a foreign bank is bogus. Delete unsolicited emails with attachments. It’s not typical for legitimate emails from organizations to include attachments. If there is something they want you to see, they’re going to direct you to information or photos on their website. Do not open any attachments to these emails even if they claim to contain pictures of a particular tragedy. These attachments are probably viruses. Delete! Be inspired by social media, but still do your homework Social networking tools like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and
blogs deliver heart-wrenching images and information about charitable causes to our computers and phones. Many of them include pleas to donate. While these tools can be a powerful way to inspire your desire to help, you should not blindly give via these vehicles. Take the time to investigate the group behind such pleas to ensure that they’re coming from a legitimate nonprofit, and then go to the charity’s website to make your donation. Be leery of anyone who contacts you online claiming to be a victim. Anyone alleging to be in this position is most likely part of a scam. People affected by a disaster or afflicted by a disease are in no position to contact you directly for assistance. Seek out the charity’s authorized website. The results of a general web search on Google, Yahoo or other search engines may include a fraudulent site designed to look like a legitimate charity’s website. For example, even before Hurricane Katrina made landfall, criminals were setting up websites that included the keyword Katrina (such as www.katrinahelp.com and www.katrinarelief.com) in an effort to collect money and personal information. In the weeks following the devastating storm, the FBI reported that it had identified over 4,000 bogus websites that were attempting to capitalize on the good will of generous Americans. So, how can you determine if a site is valid? Start by examining the web address. Most nonprofit addresses end with .org and not .com. Avoid addresses that end in a series of numbers. Also, bogus sites often ask for detailed personal information such as your Social Security number, date of birth, or your bank account and pin information. Be extremely skeptical of these sites, as providing this information makes it easy for them to steal your identity. Your best option is to start your web search at Charity Navigator. Their analysts have done the research for you. On each charity’s ratings page they include a direct link to the organization’s authorized website.

Stylemakers Franҫois Nars and Fabien Baron—influencers before ‘influencer’ was social media marketing’s most overused vernacular, have teamed up to create a stunning photo-biography, Franҫois Nars. The 432-page book chronicles Nars’ life as a revolutionary makeup artist in the 80s, a successful cosmetics mogul in the 90s (Nars eponymous brand), and now, his work as a photographer. Baron, Nars’ longtime friend and the book’s designer, is arguably fashion’s most successful art director—the one, who, under editor Franca Sozzani, reinvented Vogue Italia in the late 80s and now heads Baron & Baron, the top fashion ad agency. The book is an aesthetic trip down Nars’ memory lane, a voyeur’s peek, if you will, into the creative force who helped shape beauty. Bold, beautiful imagery, and stunning typographic solutions purposefully mirror the NARS cosmetics brand. Every page magnifies the depth of the ever-inspiring artist behind the name, who says, “My work as a makeup artist, creator, and photographer is very connected... my goal is to make people look beautiful and bring out what is on the inside. I truly believe that beauty lies within our characters.” François Nars, published by Rizzoli International, 9x12”, 432 pages, hardcover with metallic silver jacket, $85, Barnes & Noble, amazon.com, and NARS boutiques.

Makeup artist ALEXIS SWAIN reveals how to get Sonja Kinski’s beauty look!
Sonja’s skin was healthy and glowing from a facial at her favorite skincare center, Aida Thibiant in Beverly Hills. Their estheticians provide ‘tough love’ to their clients—resulting in perhaps the most thorough cleaning they’ve ever experienced to achieve a healthy, balanced glow. Sonja’s ‘usual’ is Thibiant’s Hydradermie Facial with an upgraded peel. The peel is a thorough pre-facial exfoliation prep step. The facial uses galvanic rollers to penetrate targeted ingredients deep into the skin to address various skin conditions such as dehydration, breakouts, fine lines, fatigue, acne, etc. Sonja follows up her facial with an IPL Laser treatment by Aida Thibiant’s registered nurse. The result is healthy, glowing, clean skin!
SKIN: First I prepped Sonja’s skin with Embryolisse Moisturizer and went back in around the eye area with Dr. Marcene 37 Actives High-Performance Anti-Aging Cream to moisturize
eyes and lips completely, giving me a radiant surface to begin makeup.
LIP: To finish this
look, I wanted a nude, matte lip to keep the focus on Sonja’s eyes. I lined her lips in Charlotte
BROW: Sonja has amazing brows,
but I wanted them a bit darker and bolder to frame her eyes, so I used Anastasia Brow Primer and Anastasia Brow Powder Duo to shape and set them.
Tilbury’s Pillowtalk liner and used Jeffree Star Celebrity Skin liquid lipstick.
FACE: I applied La Mer
COLOR: For a
in Linen with a brush, and then buffed in with a Beauty Blender. I used Kevyn Aucoin
Tilbury Film Star Bronze and Glow on
Soft Fluid Foundation
Sensual Skin Enhancer as
an under-eye concealer and anywhere else that needed a bit more coverage. I powdered lightly to set using Laura Mercier Translucent Powder,
focusing on the T-zone and under the eyes. I love highlights, and believe more glow creates a more youthful look for skin— so I don’t over-powder.
subtle contour, I used Charlotte
Sonja’s cheekbones and jaw. Next, I applied Stila Convertible Color in Fuschia to the
apples of the cheeks. I went back in with Pat McGrath’s Gold Shiny Stick to emphasize
highlights in the inner corners of the eyes, cheekbones, bridge of the nose and Cupid’s bow.
EYE: Sonja has gorgeous, dark, doe eyes—the focus of this makeup look. Using NARS Eye Paint in Baalbek, I applied all over the top lids using a fluffy brush to evenly disperse the product. I wanted a sheer layer to create depth without making it too heavy. I used Armani Eyes to Kill Eyeliner Pencil to line the upper lash line and extended the line for a subtle cat-eye shape. I used MAC Teddy liner under the eyes and worked into the lash line. To avoid any harsh lines—even though the eyes were intense—I then used Kat Von D’s Shade and Light Palette to blend the liner into shadow. I finished off the eyes by applying Ardell Demi-Wispy lashes, and a healthy dose of Armani Eyes to Kill Mascara to both the top and bottom lashes.

What are the possible risks with going abroad for plastic surgery? Going abroad for any surgery is not always a bad idea, but it’s not without its risks and challenges. Some are obvious. For instance, if complications arise after you’ve returned home, your treating physician is miles and miles away. Another challenge is, unlike the United States, other countries fail to have strong regulatory practices and systems in place. Other risks are not so obvious, like the heartbreaking experience of a recent patient of mine who agreed to share her story. “I had a tummy tuck and liposuction on my back performed by a surgeon in the Dominican Republic. I’d searched the web and studied the before-and-after cases of potential doctors. I also joined an online group to obtain patient testimonials. In the end, I chose a doctor who had a good reputation, and his prices weren’t bad either. While the surgery performed here would have cost roughly $20,000, there, including travel, hotel accommodations and the surgery, it was only $8000—less than half. “I went to the surgical clinic, which was very modern and up-to-date, both inside and out. I saw a cardiologist and had blood work done. I thought they were very thorough. After the surgery, I stayed in the Dominican Republic hospital for two weeks. About three weeks after my return, I had leakage from the incision and began to develop a fever. From there, it went from bad to worse. After two weeks I wasn’t getting better and had to go to the emergency room. I had some imaging work and found that I had a collection of fluids on my stomach. A doctor tried to get it all out but couldn’t, so referred me to Dr. Aronowitz. He found that the bacterial infection had spread throughout my body, so he started me on liquid antibiotics and I was in the hospital for 11 days. They sent the cultures to the lab and found it to be a mycobacterial infection. Studies by the CDC have found it’s more prevalent in the Dominican Republic. “It’s been three months now, and I’m still not well. I take IV medications five times a day and oral medication twice a day. I’m nauseous. I’ve had multiple blood transfusions. After the initial hospitalization, I’ve been in two other times and have been off work for this entire time. I’m lucky that I’m financially secure, but if I didn’t have a family to take care of me, it could have left me homeless, or worse. I put myself in a dangerous situation. If you want to talk results, my body looks horrific. I’m not happy. I’m going to have to have revision surgery. The sad part is I didn’t need to have surgery; it was just me trying to enhance my look.”
Is there anything this patient could have done to avoid her situation? Nowadays you can go to many countries around the world and be treated by doctors who have been well trained in America, Western Europe or Australia. The problem typically isn’t the competence of the doctor—it’s the lack of a good support system. Foreign hospitals and surgery centers aren’t held to rigorous American Joint Commission Accreditation standards. No one is coming around to inspect. It’s relatively expensive to run an operating room to a high standard. High-quality infection control and sterility standards are virtually invisible to the patient, and easily shortchanged. The issues of surgical or hospital-acquired infections are a real problem everywhere. The recent emergence of dangerous MRSA* and other antibiotic-resistant infections is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s like going back to the pre-penicillin era—before the 1940s when we didn’t have antibiotics. In those days, most people died of infectious diseases. We still have many effective antibiotics, but it’s a good idea to be vigilant about infections in the healthcare setting.
So what caused the infection in this patient?

Although the worst organisms that cause these infections are concentrated in hospitals. It’s called mycobacterium because it shows characteristics of both a fungus and bacteria. They’re hard to get rid of because they aren’t susceptible to the conventional antibiotics. The spores of these bacteria are found and carried in ordinary tap water. So if the instruments are washed in tap water but not sterilized properly, those spores can contaminate and grow inside the patient’s body. They’re very hard to get rid of because they aren’t susceptible to the conventional antibiotics. *MRSA definition (by Mayo Clinic staff): Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a type of staph bacteria that’s become resistant to many of the antibiotics used to treat ordinary staph infections. Most MRSA infections occur in people who’ve been in hospitals or other healthcare settings, such as nursing homes and dialysis centers.

HAT TRICK
With hearts pouring from her eyes, Cate Leuenberger tells the story of how she became a hat designer. How she had this passion for hats, and one day, through serendipity, met a woman who made them for a living. That moment would open her mind to a vision that’s now become Royal Stag, the bespoke hat concern that she and husband, Jonas, run out of Colorado. GENLUX caught up with Cate at the opening of her collaboration with cult footwear brand Fiorentini+Baker in LA, where they offer limited-edition Royal Stag hats, ($450 and up). Here, Cate answers our Two-Word Questionnaire. Describe yourself. Passionate, particular, funny, loving, kind. Flower or gardener? Gardener. I’m better at tending than being tended to. If it’s not hats, it’s music. If not music, it’s jewelry, or knitting, or cooking—I’m always keeping my hands busy. Your passion? Creating. It’s built into my operating system. It’s how I relate to the world and all things. It’s unimaginable for me not to. It’s what fuels me and keeps me sane—my key to happiness and fulfillment. Three blessings? My family, good health, knowing what I want. Best traits? Straight shooter, passionate. Job challenges? Office stuff—crunching numbers and keeping track of the business side of things. Not my strong suit. I’m not the most organized human—some might even call me a little messy. DNA change? I’d like to be a bit less fiery or explosive at times. Recurring dream? In my teens and twenties, I would have this dream where I’d get lockjaw and wouldn’t be able to open my mouth…and my teeth would start cracking and falling out. Never liked that one so much.
Lotto winnings? I’d situate the family and friends a bit, buy a house in Switzerland (that’s where Jonas is from). The rest would go towards social justice. Wisest words? Don’t overthink it…be in the ease and flow. ‘Aha’ moment? The moment I asked this woman in Santa Fe about her hat and she told me that she made it. WHAT?! You can still make these things? Mentoring tip? Find a niche, trust, and work hard. Last day? If tomorrow were the last day, I’d cook good food and be with my family…and open a bottle of wine or two. Next risk? To be honest, at this point, I’m where I want to be. If something is right, I go for it. Life is too short, and I live a full and exciting life. 2021 vision? I’ll be on planet Earth, making hats and raising kids. Reincarnation plan? A skunk—stinky and respected.
Sewin’ the Line Cate meticulously adds the liner to the custom hat that’s about ready to meet its new owner.
Your hero? My husband. Best gift? My husband, ‘cause since we’ve been together I’ve received everything else. The love, my children, the partnership in life, work and play. He’s my rock. Stress element? Time. There’s never enough time.

Two years ago, along with three friends, she co-founded Visionary Women, a nonprofit that highlights the voices of women and thought leaders from around the world. Last year, she collaborated with Leymah Gbowee, the Nobel laureate, who came from Liberia to encourage women and girls to be advocates in the peace-building process.

Can a great accessory bring you joy? We’re talking about poppy candy-colored clutches and handbags, luxe material and funky, flirty detail. That’s just what Nancy Gonzalez’s pieces do. The Colombian-born designer debuted her first collection at Bergdorf Goodman in 1998, where she made her mark early with bold colors, innovative ideas, and meticulous quality. There’s a fantasy element at play here. “I incorporate elements into each piece that make us smile—a color, a texture, a detail, a surprise,” Nancy says of her work. Joshua Schulman, president of Bergdorf Goodman, even recognizes her as one of the keystone brands in their accessories department. “She is a true visionary who has revolutionized the market with her mix of unconventional colors and design,” he says. Her pieces are made in her native Cali, Colombia by local artisans with expert old-school craftsmanship, and reflect her dedication to the indigenous community. Nancy Gonzalez the brand has gained popularity around the world—her collections calling over 300 luxury retailers home, and garnering an extensive list of celebrity fans. In 2007 she was honored by the Accessories Council with Brand of the Year, a highly coveted award that only solidifies her place as a key player in the accessory industry. Gonzalez is launching an exciting new shoe collection exclusively with Bergdorf Goodman that will be available at select Neiman Marcus locations throughout the country in December.
