STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE
All things must pass. Just four years shy of a monumental 100th anniversary, Barneys New York is closing its iconic doors. It’s easy to speculate that the internet was the likely dagger precipitating in the demise of the retailer. Over our 15-year Genlux life, while much of the fashion for our photoshoots comes from the NYC showrooms, Barneys and the other ‘big three’ department store retailers have also provided, so let’s hope that the remaining duo, Neimans and Saks, will prevail. At Saks Fifth Avenue, Pui Ko, who works tirelessly in the retailer’s Studio Services department, deserves our deepest gratitude. On many occasions, sometimes, at the 11th hour, Pui has unwaveringly helped our stylists create, as photographer/hairstylist Robert Steinken likes to call them, “Great moments in fashion!”
Stefani, to Sarah Jessica Parker, and, for Genlux, Mila Kunis, to see if he’d style an editorial using exclusively vintage fashion. He loved the idea and suggested we tap Marlene Wetherell, who has operated a luxury vintage shop in New York since the early 2000s. Next, I contacted my friend and photographer Marc Baptiste, and the “moment” was set. Their story, “Past Perfect,” on page 40, captures the party fashion of the late 70s and early 80s, showcasing designers like Jacques de Beaucour, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, and Galliano. Baptiste’s brilliance is also on display on our cover, where he photographed model Ella Wong, the New Zealand-born beauty who is represented by Elite Models in New York. More photos of Ella and her interview, “Wong’s World,” are on page 62. Ella also appears in “Maximalism,” on page 50, photographed by first-time Genlux shooter Tim Francis. Undoubtedly, Ella is a supermodel on the rise. We confidently vouch for her becoming fashion’s next It girl.
Steinken created a few great moments in PHOTO: FREDDIE LEIBA BY MARC BAPTISTE, this issue. Along with fashion stylist Kasia PHOTOS IN BACKGROUND BY HORST Michaels, he photographed the effervescent Tomorrow morning, as I drive to work along Wilshire model, Livia Pilliman, on page 70. To her Boulevard, I’ll try my best not to glance over at Barneys. credit, it’s Livia’s third straight issue in Genlux. Steinken Its pristine design aesthetic had always been so carefully also lent his hairstyling touch to our interview story, with curated and protected—so clean, cool, and pure. So reality star Sophia Pierson in “Person to Pierson,” on page 24. it’s especially painful to see the ugly “Store Closing” signs Last month, I phoned New York super stylist Freddie Leiba, plastered in the windows like a supermarket’s meat specials. the man who’s dressed everyone from Beyonce and Gwen A sad sign, indeed.

You may have seen Sophia Pierson on E! Television’s WAGS or Nat & Liv—those most-times loud and vexatious reality shows (which, by the way, we can’t stop watching). Or, you may have viewed one of her YouTube makeup tutorials. We caught up with the Canadian-born knockout at her Genlux photoshoot where she shares her blessings, regrets, and favorite inspirational quotes.

GPS postion? I’m sitting on my couch in Vancouver, Canada. You’re wearing? Cognac-colored jumpsuit by Fashion Nova. . 5-word description? I’m honest, curious, driven, witty and confident. Three blessings? My family, my career, my health. Best asset? My honesty. Your passion? Mental health/ self love. I am also extremely passionate about skincare. Guilty pleasure? Lay’s Salt & Vinegar chips. Happiest moment? The success of my mental health event thrown in Vancouver, “The Self Love Project,” which raised over $10,000 for a mental health charity close to my heart. Beauty secret? Drink plenty of water. DNA change? I’m pretty happy with my body, but if I had to change one thing about myself I guess I would say cellulite on my thighs. Negative trait? My indecisiveness. Everyday style? Bodysuit and jeans. Favorite getaway? My first thought was the spa. I haven’t travelled enough to choose a place!

Inspirational quote? I am obsessed with motivational quotes! I have a few favorites: “Believe you deserve it and the universe will serve it.” “The greater your storm the brighter your rainbow.” “A winner is just a loser who tried one more time.” Childhood crush? Paul Walker Childhood teasing? I was teased for my chubby cheeks. Biggest regret? Taking out anger on my parents when I was going through a hard time. Your hobbies? Cooking, reading, nature walks, drinking, lol. Fantasy dinner? I’d invite Marilyn Monroe, Albert Einstein, Jesus, Oprah, and Dr. Joe Dispenza. Embarrassing moment? Cheerleading at an 8th grade basketball game. All the cute 12th-grade boys were watching and cheering my name (they knew me because of my older brother) and I was so excited. We started one of our cheer routines and I was so distracted/excited I did the wrong cheer and it was so very obvious, everyone’s jaws dropped! Favorite charity? The Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation, in Canada, for mental health awareness. 2025 plan? Well, in five years I hope to be the owner of a skincare line and travelling the world with the love of my life— whoever he may be. G. Your passion? To experience the world. Three blessings? My family, travel, and my job. Self analysis? In five words, I’d say I’m pragmatic, loyal, calm, artistic, and a control freak. Valued trait? Loyalty. I don’t have millions of friends; I have a close group of loyal ones. My friends back home in Australia are ones I went through drama school and are my most special friendships. Guilty pleasure? Travelling to exotic places and staying in nice hotel rooms. Happiest moments? When my husband and I were in a play called, A Doll’s House, and it’s where we met. Also, the birth of our daughter, Darcey. Your hubby? Peter O’Brien, who is also an actor. He finished his master’s degree in motion capture and will be doing his doctorate in the same field. Beauty tips? Sleep seven to eight hours, stay out of the sun and choose your parents wisely. Fashion style? I’m a dress person, and I’m into sneakers these days. I don’t rock high-heels, though at work I’m in them all the time. Favorite getaway? It depends on what I want to do. New York is always great for shopping and theater. Kauai is a nice do-nothing getaway. Favorite quote? It’s by Isadora Duncan, who said, “You were once wild here. Don’t let them tame you.” Your sign? Sagittarius.

GPS position? I’m at my home in LA.
GENL
Owing part of an enduring acting career to her DNA (dad is actor Barry Otto), Australian-born actress Miranda Otto is a member of a growing league of women landing plum roles after 40. Her successful film and TV résumé bears blockbusters like, What Lies Beneath, Lord of the Rings, War of the Worlds, Homeland, 24: Legacy, and today, you’ll find Miranda playing the High Priestess of the Church of the Night, Zelda Phiona Spellman, in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Here, Miranda puts her stamp on our Genlux Two-Word interview. —SK
Your heroes? I was into dance growing up, so I looked up to dancers like Vaslav Nijinsky and Margot Fonteyn.
Biggest regret? Probably my self-doubt—a complete waste of time. Being in situations without diving in. Holding back and being reluctant. I would recommend anyone else to go for it and don’t doubt that you can do it. Best trait? My friends might say that I’m a good organizer. I’m detail-oriented. I like things to be organized. DNA change? If I could change anything about myself, I’d be less shy around people. People think I’m aloof, but I sometimes get nervous about meeting people for the first time. I want to be more gregarious. Many of the actors I’ve known through the years are quite introverted. Favorite charity? I’m an ambassador for The Smith Family, an Australian charity that gives to families in need. It also assists with underprivileged children who require help with their educational needs. The goal is to help these children through high school, with the tools required to keep up with the other students. We believe supporting a child’s education is the best way to help break the cycle of disadvantage. The charity also helps with tutoring and mentorship programs. One in six Australian children and young people live in poverty. Right now, I’m sponsoring a child who has autism who is similar in age to my daughter. She wrote me recently saying she likes science because she likes the Bunsen burners. What’s next? I begin filming Downhill, an American remake of a 2014 Swedish comedy-drama, Force Majeure. It stars Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. 2025 plan? I hope to still be here in LA—it’s lovely here. We’ve moved around a bit, but we’ve been here six and a half years and it feels like home.
OKAY, MIRANDA OTTO, PLEASE RATE YOURSELF ON A SCALE FROM 1-10. Romantic: 4. I don’t know. I think I have a problem with the word. It feels like a light word. Romance feels like the way you describe a picnic. Sensitive: 9. I’d say I’m pretty sensitive to all kinds of things— especially change. Affectionate: 7 Judgemental: 5 Fashionable: 3. I like clothes, but I see clothes more as costume—as a way of dressing up to express different aspects of a character or personality. Sometimes, at the end of filming I’ll buy some of my character’s clothes, so what I wear is often influenced or based on the character I’m playing. I also like vintage fashion. Competitive: 8. I am competitive, but most of all, with myself. I try not to be competitive with others because, as my step-father jockey used to say, you run your own race. I don’t see a point with competing with others. Emotional: 7. I used to be much more emotional. Forgiving: 7. I like to forgive. I like to resolve things, though I can hold a grudge. Temperamental: 4 Critical: I’m pretty self-critical, so I’d give it a 5. Generous: 7 Honest: 9, I’m honest to a fault. G

Your home? Auckland, New Zealand. Nothing quite compares to it, though, I took it for granted and didn’t quite appreciate it until I lived overseas. I now realize how lucky I was to have nature surrounding me. You’re wearing? Winter is here, so I’m obsessed with leather pants. I think it’s important to invest in some key pieces every season, like boots and a great jacket. I have these great boots from Dior, which are a fun play between a gumboot and combat boot. Describe yourself? In five words, I’d say that I’m honest, spontaneous, witty, thoughtful, and kind. Three blessings? My family and friends, my opportunity to travel, and my upbringing. Favorite pastime? I enjoy catching up with friends over some good wine and a big delicious cheese platter. Biggest fear? I’m petrified of birds Childhood bullying? I am half-Chinese, so some kids were a little racist, however, when I started modeling, I learned to embrace my heritage, so it’s really helped me to build confidence and self- respect. Beauty secrets? Growing up in New Zealand, we have a hole in the ozone layer, so skin protection is especially important. I use Elta MD SPF moisturizer every day, and, since living in New York, I have started using several products from Biologique-Recherche, including their face mask and P50 Balancing Exfoliator, which has been game-changing. Your hobbies? I love traveling to new places and embracing the culture and going off the beaten track for new experiences.
66 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2019
What’s your favorite charity? Recently I participated and supported the UN sustainable development goal. We were fundraising to support and improve human rights and work environments.

Meet fashion’s next IT girl, Ella Wong. The statuesque model stands five-foot-ten and owes her stunning beauty to her mixed-ethnicity of Chinese, Dutch and English heritage. Born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, she now makes her home in New York, where she’s represented by the prestigious Elite Model Agency. Ella answers our Genlux Two-Word Interview.
Best feature? My mixed ethnicity. Best trait? I think my friends would say my honesty. Workout regimen? I try to workout more or less four times a week, and I like to mix it up. Currently, I have been frequenting P.volve, The 100s Pilates, and rumble training. I think too much exercise can be counterproductive and end up doing more harm than good. Favorite getaways? Anywhere warm. I love the beach—there’s nothing better! I also love Asia—it’s such a culture shock, but in the best way possible. What’s your passion? I love to cook! After traveling and living in so many different countries, I’ve learned to embrace all cuisines and to make some local dishes from the locals. In Italy, I learned to make gnocchi and risotto, and in Tokyo, I learned to make okonomiyaki. Happiest moment? I honestly love being surrounded by family and close friends, so any event or occasion that brings us all together, such as a birthday or Christmas, means the world to me. Favorite quote? Accept who you are and revel in it. Job perks? I’ve been very fortunate to have worked with some of the best photographers, makeup artists, and stylists. I must say, destination shoots are such a treat—discovering some of the most incredible hidden gems. In New Zealand, we got to shoot all down the South Island at the most beautiful spots—it made me really appreciate my homeland.

hats and tails, schmaltzy old films, and promising that I’ll get fit and healthy in the coming year. On New Year’s Eve, I will be dancing the night away with Charles Worthington, the fabulous hairdresser, and a cocktail shaker, in Chelsea. Lately, the BBC has been filming me for a documentary. Think ‘Extinction Rebellion’ (Google it) slashed with Joshua Kane. Speaking of ... in this topsy-turvy world of fashion, Joshua showed some incredible pieces at his show, Mysterious Creatures. I wanted everything! In opera news, that extraordinary stylist, and fashion designer, Daniel Lismore, created costumes for The Mask of Orpheus that shone brightly from the London Coliseum stage. Known for his beautiful, ostentatious fashion, Daniel glued over 400,000 Swarovski crystals on the stunning costumes. I’m excited to see The Tutankhamun exhibition, running through next May at the Saatchi Gallery. It’s been a resounding success. Needless to say, the Prince from Egypt’s had quite exquisite taste. Last week, my friend Nicky Haslam, the world-renown interior decorator, had an auction at Bonhams, London. The collection titled, “The Contents of the Hunting Lodge,” was truly magnificent. His inimitable style came to life through the art, sculpture, furniture, decor, and documents. The top lot was the Portrait of Coco Chanel, by Cecil Beaton, that sold for $64,498. This time of year, all of us, including me, need to count our blessings. Let’s show our gratefulness to the Lord, by extending help and comfort to the people living out on the streets with blankets, pullovers, socks, and food.

BEAUTY
GENLUX STEPS TO LOOKING YOUNGER —NINKA B. We live in a beautiful time where some of the most advanced age-defying techniques are available to us, but just like anything, it takes time, commitment, and consistency to achieve the desired result. The good news is that young, glowing skin is within reach. Follow these scientifically proven and easy steps to look and feel vibrant from the inside out. -Ninka B @ninkabskin
1. Lifted skin with a healing touch Did you know? A facial massage saturates your skin with happy chemical endorphins. Afterward, expect to feel blissful, relaxed, and confident. Treat yourself to a facial treatment many times throughout the year. The healing touch of a facial massage will boost circulation, reduce puffiness, create a lifted and defined appearance, and stimulate collagen production. All around a win-win for youthful skin and rested mind!
3. Gentle Cleansing Not all cleansers are created equal. Some products strip the skin from its protective lipids, loosening the water-holding barrier. Therefore, water evaporates faster from the skin, leading to dryness and irritation. Often leaving the skin looking dull and tired. Keep your skin’s protective layer intact by using warm water and cleansing with a gentle cleanser. Ninka B recommends: sircuit cosmeceuticals supermild cleanser, $40, sircuitskin.com
4. Give your skin a boost Copper Peptides add vibrancy to your skin. Exfoliation isn’t the only solution to luscious skin. In your daily skincare regime, you should include copper peptides, which are backed by science to tighten the skin. But that’s not all they do. Copper peptides reduce photodamage, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and protect the skin cells from UV radiation. Make sure to select a product with GHK copper peptides, which is the most studied and discovered by Dr. Loren Pickart. Ninka B recommends: Combine the Neova Power Defense Antioxidant Serum, $117 and Creme De La Copper $119, neova.com
2. Beauty Sleep Science has shown that people who get adequate sleep, look younger. Sleep is the most inexpensive beauty treatment for younger-looking skin. Your skin goes into the repair mode in the evening, and that continues throughout the night. To ensure your skin can heal from environmental stress, make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep and, when possible, take 30 minutes of nap time.
5. Tighten your skin from within What you eat has a profound effect on the appearance of the skin. Soft, clear, glowing skin is a reflection of healthy cells. By eating colorful foods, you optimize your skin’s natural tightening systems and enhance the body’s ability to repair itself. Start your day with a nutritious smoothie, which helps to decrease inflammation, neutralize free radicals, and boost collagen.
My favorite components: berries, banana, cashew milk, ground cinnamon, and cacao nibs, plus a scoop of antioxidant-rich Beauty Powder. Ninka B recommends: The Beauty Chef Glow Inner Beauty Powder, $70, thedetoxmarket.com
6. Skin rejuvenation The origin of alphahydroxy acids traces back to the days of Cleopatra. She knew the beautifying and skin-renewing benefits of sour milk, fruit acids, and sour wine (all containing AHAs). Alpha Hydroxy Acids remove the old and worn-out layers by loosening dead skin cells. Detoxing the superficial layers of the skin with AHA’s reveal fresh and youthful skin. Ninka B recommends: Luzern Laboratories L’Essentials Au Vin Exfoliating Peel Treatment Pads, $80, luzernlabs.com
That’s it, friends! If you have any questions beyond the scope of this article, don’t hesitate to reach out to me on Instagram @Ninkabskin

7. Restore your collagen Red LED Light is one of my most recommended skincare gadgets for home use. Red light treats loss of firmness, creating natural skin plumpness. In time, the skin cells become lazier and don’t function as they once did during adolescence. Red LED light works by energizing skin cells and stimulating collagen and elastin. Keep in mind, the process of remodeling collagen with LED takes time. Therefore you should use the light at least five days a week on clean skin before applying your skincare. Ninka B recommends: LightStim for Wrinkles, $249, revolve.com

Visionary Woman
You’re unlikely to find a more glowing resume. Shelley Reid has three degrees from USC—one from their Gould School of Law, a bunch of lofty gigs at big-name studios like MGM, Fox Television, and Disney; plus, an awe-inspiring devotion to a laundry list of non-profits. Here, the president of Visionary Women takes a breather out of her hectic day to respond to a few two-word questions. VW goals? Visionary Women is dedicated to advancing female empowerment and using our platform of advocacy to provide opportunities and support women and girls. Next fundraiser? We don’t do any fundraisers at Visionary Women. We are a new kind of philanthropy that’s membership-based. We also have sponsors and ticket sales through our salon series. Those proceeds go to support the charities that support girls and women. Your events? Our salon events feature high-profile speakers, like Gloria Steinham, Sherry Blair, Demi Moore, Patricia and Rosanna Arquette, and many more. Compelling, high-end programming.

Your background? I’m Canadian and came here to go to USC. Day job? My professional job is television and entertainment. Your philanthropy? I’m now in my third year as president of Visionary Women (VW), and so, I’ve been a part of the non-profit organization from the very beginning. For the past 15 years, I’ve been Chair of the Otis College Annual Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show and I founded

the President’s Fashion Council at Otis College. Just recently, I was honored at their Centennial event for supporting fashion at OTIS. It’s a fashion-forward membership-based, group of women; also membershipbased. I’m on the Professional Advisory Committee of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, the Leadership Advisory Council of the Association of Media and Entertainment Counsel and BAFTA, and a member of the Art Council of Farhang Foundation
New memberships? We want women of all ages, but we also hope to bring young women into philanthropy. Two years ago, we formed our Under35 Group (VW-U35). A group that ranges from age 15 to 35. We encourage our Under35 Group to have a sense of independence from our primary group, because their focus is different in terms of career and personal lives. We make sure this younger group is consistent with the goals, values, and philosophy of Visionary Women. Giving model? The world of philanthropy is changing. How people give is changing. People have a lot of choices. It’s competitive out there. We can’t be in all places at one time, so we decided on a membership model that makes
more sense. We really want to ... what’s the saying? Walk the talk. Giving rate? We have a 97 to 98 percent giving rate. We try to give away all proceeds within 30 days of a salon event. We have an active and involved grant group that scrutinizes every application. And then, to those organization that we give to, we have a follow-up team that ensures we’re seeing the kind of impact we want to report to our members. On our website, we interview people from the various organizations that we’ve given to and that shows the positive results that our funding has made. VW beneficiaries It’s across the board. The primary focus of our giving is to organizations or initiatives that help girls or women. We give to charities such as Cherie Blair’s organization in Central Africa that starts micro-businesses, a teenage hotline at Cedars, the Chysalis Foundation, the Downtown Women’s Center, LACMA, HAMMER, and MOCA, an annual female writers program at the Sundance Institute, and many others. Holiday plans? I’m heavily involved with the Children’s Action Network, a small organization founded by Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, to help Foster Children in Los Angeles. We have a big event every holiday with a cocktail party and auction of one-of-akind wreaths designed by prominent artists.

PHILANTHRO-FILES: JODIE DOLAN
Taking on a Heavy Load
These days, fashion designer Jodie Dolan is cleaning up, but not in the usual sense. Her free mobile laundry service, The Laundry Truck LA, is helping LA’s homeless, and, as our CAT WILLIAMS finds, her honorable, difference-making quest doesn’t end there.
Top: Jodie Dolan in the Dolan design office. Bottom: (l-r) Kate Anlyan, Patricia Lyon, Christine Moore inside The Laundry Truck.
How does the founder of a thriving fashion line make a difference in the Los Angeles homeless community? Just ask Jodie Dolan. Dolan founded her eponymous clothing line in 2004, beginning with T-shirts and ultimately expanding into a full range of women’s clothing. Today, Dolan, the brand, has gained a terrific following in the retail powerhouses of Anthropologie and Nordstrom, and now proudly offers direct-to-consumer shopping at shopdolan.com. But it was a chance encounter that nudged Jodie towards finding a way to substantially improve the lives of the homeless community in downtown Los Angeles.
98 GENLUX HOLIDAY 2019
After attending a glittery red carpet event in West Hollywood in 2016, Jodie inadvertently startled a homeless woman sleeping in a doorway. After apologizing and offering financial assistance, Jodie drove home, wondering how she might have helped the woman more. A short time later, Jodie found herself volunteering on skid row. She enlisted her team from Dolan, and they began making and distributing food. They also got involved with the mobile shower movement. But the one thing that really struck Jodie was watching people put back on the same dirty clothing after their shower. This was Jodie’s a-ha moment. “People were going in and taking a shower and having this incredible clean moment, and then they were putting their dirty clothes back on. So it was just a really simple idea. I thought, let’s do this. Let’s make a laundry truck.” Of course, it was anything but simple. Though the idea was born in 2017, Dolan spent close to two years working with many different experts to engineer the truck that would house and run the mobile washers and dryers. In January of this year, The Laundry Truck LA was finally up and running, washing clothing, jackets, and blankets for anyone who needed a leg up. Currently, The Laundry Truck LA has two locations, one in Highland Park and one in Huntington Park. Jodie explains, “Wherever we are, we are there with other services. Right now, in both locations, we have the Shower of Hope, hot meals, and caseworkers. It’s like a pop-up community. You can get people engaged and doing other things while they wait for laundry.” The Laundry Truck received a generous grant from Clorox to get the operations started, but Jodie is quick to add that the fundraising continues. Jodie and the Dolan team keep doing their part, offering both manpower and financial support. Dolan contributes a percentage of all sales to The Laundry Truck. Jodie goes on to say, “The future of The Laundry Truck depends on need, and the need isn’t going away anytime soon. If the need is there, we will continue to do it. I do anticipate that we will probably have more trucks.” And having more trucks, means more people having access to clean clothing. And clean clothing leads to a reclamation of dignity. “We take clean clothes for granted. If you have limited resources, it’s something that means a lot.” For more information visit thelaundrytruckla.com G
