GENLUX SAMIA ARSLANE EDITOR IN CHIEF

Each season we’re bombarded by trends, and this spring is no different. Actually, let me rephrase that: This spring there are more trends than ever. Our job as a magazine in the ‘fashion world’ is to report to you what we see on the runways – highlighting what has been repeated, as well as what stood out. We judge, we love, we pan. Most of the time, I’ll select trends that make the most sense to follow, given that we live in LA…even though we’re distributed nationwide at Barnes and Noble. In this issue, two major trends are highlighted: stripes and gingham. Let’s start with stripes, which was seen on almost all the spring/summer runways. This time the designers play with positioning and placement (p…). A while back, I loved a man in a gingham shirt. Mmmm, not sure I still do. This trend actually reminds me of the time Brigitte Bardot got married and wore the famous pink gingham dress. It started a trend that caused a shortage of fabric in France. Oh là là! (p94) More statement trends will be featured in the next issue like color,

14 GENLUX SPRING 2015

suede, fringes and much more. So stay tuned! Also in this issue, former Ford model Dee Ocleppo, wife of fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, is featured as our Out-of-Towner. Dee is making a lot of noise with her new handbag line, and we can’t get enough of it. (p104) Also, you’ll get to meet the Foster sisters. Born into Hollywood royalty, the duo is about to invade our homes on the small screen. Get ready to be addicted to their new show, Barely Famous! (p91) Lastly, yes it’s official, we’ve been around for a decade! This spring we’re very proud to celebrate our tenth anniversary. For this 53rd issue of Genlux, we welcome the charismatic and super-sexy Elizabeth Hurley as our cover girl. Surely you’ve noticed the billboards all around town showcasing her new show on E!—The Royals. She’s back, more beautiful than ever, ready to take on the world once again. As Mike Myers would say as Austin Powers, “Yeah, baby!” Bisous, mes chéris!

THE GYPSET LIFE

When David and Cheryl Woodcock left their Beverly Hills home of 20 years for life in the beachfront village of Punta Mita, Mexico, many friends thought their speedy return was imminent. Now, years later, coming back is the furthest thing from their minds. In our Genlux two-word questionnaire, Cheryl explains. 86 GENLUX SPRING 24 SUMMER2015 / 2014

CHERYL WOODCOCK Cheryl Woodcock is a special correspondent and producer for

Entertainment Tonight and a contributor to Genlux magazine. She answers our Genlux two-word questionnaire. My family. No contest. I’m always looking forward to the future of the next generation with such pride and passion— doing my best to guide them in a beautiful world filled with love and opportunities. I’ve had a wonderful career and know just how fortunate I am. But, my amazing husband David, daughter Skyler, and son John David will always be the center of my life. As a family, we all share a passion for the ocean, nature, surfing, adventure and travel. As such, our philanthropic focus is on the preservation and health of the ocean, the Earth, surrounding communities and humanity over all.

Your passion?

I’m blessed to live in Punta Mita, Mexico, and in an area brimming with culture and daily adventures including an active jungle beach and surf life for my children. The irony is that after having lived in Beverly Hills for 20 years, returning to Los Angeles to work as a special correspondent and producer for Entertainment Tonight and visit with dear friends has become something that I always look forward to and absolutely relish! Especially the shopping—and I love the beauty treatments at RejuvaYou Spa in Pasadena. In Mexico, my favorite escape is to the St. Regis hotel in Punta Mita—either for a romantic getaway with my sexy, cute husband or a family affair where my children can surf the perfect wave right there in front of the hotel. Love their fabulous spa treatments.

Favorite getaways?

I was covering the National Democratic Convention and my Insider crew was next to Katie Couric, who had just interviewed Michelle Obama’s brother. My producers said no interviews with Katie would be allowed. But I was just standing there with a mic in my hand and we made eye contact, so I thought, ‘What the heck?’ and started interviewing her anyway. Suddenly a fan ran up and bumped into my cameraman, who then proceeded to fall over a chair onto the floor at Katie’s feet. It was a comedy of errors. I was just so red-faced because I felt that we had created all this havoc around her with every major media outlet there to witness the event. I went back to my hotel room, pulled the covers over my head, and lamented, ‘Why do I have to be that pushy journalist all the time?’ Ha!

Embarrassing moment?

Three blessings?

Easy. My family, health and faith.

I’d like to be a professional chocolate taster and bubble-bath taker. Or a public servant-politician. My father is an attorney and was a state legislator from Oklahoma. He was a member of the House of Representatives at the time of my birth. I studied criminal justice at Arizona State University and planned on being a lawyer, to follow in my father’s footsteps. Then I discovered my passion and fire for television journalism. I’ve been at ET for a total of almost 18 years on and off, and really just couldn’t imagine having any other career. Well...actually, I would make a really great publicist.

Trading places?

Character change? A healthy dose of patience wouldn’t hurt me. I tend to gravitate toward being the ‘pushy television producer.’ In my professional life, it has served me well. However, I could use more patience in my personal life. Dinner guests?

For ones I don’t know, I’ll go with Coco Chanel, Warren Buffet, Barry Diller, Ernest Hemingway and Nelson Mandela. Dinner with my friends would be Cheryl Tiegs, Kathy Hilton, Irena Medavoy, Ariana Huffington, Alana Stewart and Deepak Chopra as the 6th wheel. Your hero? Honestly, it’s my husband, David. I know it sounds corny, but he’s really the most understanding, incredibly intelligent, compassionate, giving, loving, kind, beautiful, soulful, bold, courageous, philanthropic, innovative, spiritual, private and thoughtful person I know. He is truly an amazing father, husband and businessman. He inspires me to be a better person and to walk this Earth with love, intention, confidence, power and intention—fulfilling my destiny as a mother to my beautiful children. Biggest nightmare? Not being prepared for an ET interview. Sitting down and having no idea what the movie, television show or book is about. I think that’s happened before, actually, so maybe that should go under the ‘most embarrassing moment’ question. dream? I’m living it! We call it the Gypset life—a term coined by author Julia Chaplin. It’s a mix of the Gypsy and jetset lifestyles. Currently living in a tropical bohemian esoteric paradise by the sea, watching my children grow, frolicking in the water—moving forward with their passion of surfing, academic studies and acquiring the ever-so-beneficial skills of being bilingual and bi-cultural, along with learning about other lifestyles away from the sometimes stressful conventional society. My children have the opportunity to be children—superconnected to nature with less attachment to technology during their formative years. What a gift! We are grooming them to be world influencers. I’ve always adored existing in the bohemian enclaves where the authentic Gypsetters abound—being the ultimate ‘surf mom’ on the beach with the jungle behind and my beautiful children in front taking wave after wave in the crystal blue waters of life…then being able to hop back on a plane to the glamorous world of Hollywood and fashion. I especially adore coming back for the fabulous Genlux parties! I am so blessed to be living the best of both worlds! We are off to Hossegor, France for the summer to surf the waves there. Oh, I am indeed living my favorite dream!

She has a flawless porcelain complexion and her smile is perfect, though it wasn’t always so. “I used to have a big gap in my teeth. It was right here,” she says, placing her fingernail where the hole once was. “I was teased about it until I was 15 and would never smile.”

The 31-year-old Swedish actress, who spent her younger years in London, orders an English muffin and some coffee, black, and describes herself using these five words: Crafty. Artsy. Traveler. Kind. Emotional. Of the latter, she admits to crying at the drop of a hat—especially when it comes to movies. In her very proper British accent, she sums it up: “I feel a lot of things. I’m really moved easily. I see a documentary and two minutes later I’m sobbing. The film that moved me the most is Dancer in the Dark starring Björk. It’s so gut-wrenching sad. I felt destroyed on the inside for two weeks. It was such a tragic and emotional film. Needless to say, I have to be careful with the films I choose to watch.” Katia’s artsy side is in the abstract paintings she creates, and her crafty aspect is fed through her obsession with hammers, nails and woodworking. She’s built a lot of her own furniture including some farmhouse benches for her kitchen and a reclaimed wood bed frame. “There’s something so therapeutic about working with my hands. I love power tools and have a set by Bosch—my favorite is a drill that transforms into an electric screwdriver. It’s so easy and satisfying to drive in screws,” she says, adding the proper onomatopoeia, “Szzzswip, szzzswip.” Katia speaks in a disarmingly gentle tone and smiles after each remark. Her kind and compassionate side keeps up with human -rights efforts around the world, and especially gender

equality. She’s passionate about the work of Amnesty International, and her other charity projects include devoting time to her love for animals. Katia’s original life plan didn’t include modeling or acting. She was a tomboy as a teen, and her heart was focused on being a crime investigator. So she went to a military school to study crime psychology. She was about to attend a police academy when her good looks and thin 5-foot-9-inch frame steered her toward a modeling career. The money poured in and the career as a crime investigator went out the window. Soon acting came calling, and over the last few years, Katia has starred on Fox’s Sleepy Hollow, playing Katrina Crane, wife of Ichabod Crane. Currently, Katia’s producing her first feature film. Our conversation moves to growing older and understanding that chasing material possessions will rarely make one happy. On that note, she picks up her phone to share some music she’s been listening to. A soothing melody and calming voice pours out. “It’s Snatam Kaur,” she says, holding it up to my ear. “I find myself listening to a lot of journey music. It’s a sort of music that takes you away from all of your thoughts and takes you to another space. I’ve never been able to meditate before. Now, finally, I can take a deep breath and appreciate the things I have, rather than focus on the things I don’t. G

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

E!, those kings of reality television, are banking that their first scripted show, The Royals, will be the next big thing. Their queen? Why, Elizabeth Hurley, of course. Our STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER caught up with the flawless beauty, who talks about charity, motherhood, and about that big birthday coming up later this year.

ELIZABETH HURLEY Elizabeth Hurley is on holiday, floating in a pool in the Caribbean when the

call comes in. “I heard the phone beep, so I swam over and my agent, Gueran, is on the other end, and says ecstatically, ‘Liz, there’s an amazing new show and I want you to have the part. And that’s all I’m going to tell you.” Just this week, despite rumblings that reality television, like the once-great polar ice cap, is melting, E! anted up another $80 million on the Kardashians, betting they’re here to stay, well, at least through 2019. To hedge that bet, or perhaps to reduce their toxicity levels, they’re also debuting their first scripted drama, T he Royals, airing Sundays at 10p.m. Playing the queen is, you guessed it, Elizabeth Hurley. Elizabeth sits down with me following our Genlux photo shoot at the Luxe Hotel Rodeo Drive to talk about the show, motherhood, and her 20 years of charity service. Of her role as the queen, she admits she doesn’t play very nice. “It’s a little ambiguous whether my character’s a good or bad person. I think ultimately she does bad things, but for the greater good.” She lowers her voice, adding, “I know a lot of evil people have said that in their time.” T he Royals’ creator, Mark Schwahn, also created One Tree Hill, and Elizabeth’s a big fan. “I think he’ll be a friend for life. He’s a great guy—my age, married. No, there’s nothing romantic between us. I get on with him so well. If we should be so lucky to be a successful show and work together for years, it would be a joy to work with Mark. It’s not often you feel that way. The big fear is, what if, on one hand, it’s a nightmare and you’d be so lucky that it’d be a success—but on the other hand, oh my God, you’d be trapped!” T he Royals comes at a perfect time. And perfect place. For eight years, Elizabeth had been the devoted mother, staying away from long-term television or film roles to raise her son, Damian, now 12, out in the country. She decided to return to work but wanted to stay close to home. Lucky for her, T he Royals happened to film, where else, in London. “Do you know how few television shows are shot in London?” she asks. Damian is Elizabeth’s first passion and love, and the conversation always seems to draw back to him. “I’m an obsessed mommy. He’s the light of my life. I’m a little bit mommycentric. He’s my first thought when I wake up in the morning. I did every school run and all his cooking—I really loved that.” Elizabeth quantifies her concerns for Damian’s future. “I have 800 billion fears for my kid. Many, many! I went to sleep dreaming of glue-sniffing when he was six months old—the dread of it. As mommies, we’re so worried about the small things. We’re nervous wrecks and we probably drive our kids demented with our worry.” Elizabeth’s own childhood had its challenges, like being

picked on for being too thin. “I wish that that would happen now,” she jokes. “I was very, very skinny and underdeveloped. I was flat-chested and the last girl in my class to grow bosoms. I was the shortest girl in class, too, only 4-foot-9, until I was 15. All of my friends had blossomed and were gorgeous. I was called ‘Tin Ribs.’ I used to fold up Kleenex very carefully and put them in the back pockets of my jeans. Then I’d look in the mirror and ask, ‘Do I look curvy?’ Pathetic, I know.” Tin Ribs, indeed. In 1997, Elizabeth took on the sexy role for which she’s best known, playing secret agent Vanessa Kensington in Mike Myers’ Austin Powers movies. And this year, that once scrawny kid signed on to model for her 21st year with beauty giant Estee Lauder. “They’ve been a phenomenal company and have become some of my best friends in the world. They’ve been so supportive and loyal to me—through the thick of a lot of things. They understand that an awful lot of women who buy their products are my age and older.” As loyal as Estée Lauder is to Elizabeth, she’s been equally loyal to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, having raised funds and awareness for them for the last 20 years. “That’s my key charity. They’re a phenomenal A-rated organization. We’ve raised more than half a billion dollars. We employ fabulous scientists all over the world who are making breakthroughs all the time. I also help Elton with his AIDS foundation, and I’m a patron for a few kids’ charities in London. I donate the whole of October for all the fundraising activities I can.” This year, June 10, to be exact, Elizabeth turns, ahem, 50. The new 30, I assure her, and in her case it’s true. Still, she begins to fidget. “I know there’s a big birthday coming up. I know it’s something I have to address mentally. I haven’t yet. And people keep saying, ‘Are you having a party?’ Don’t rush me. I might have to go to an Ashram and stand on my head for a few weeks and find myself. I’ve never been a great one for milestones like that.” Growing older, but seeing life through her son’s perspective, is what brings Elizabeth her happiest moments. “We obviously become a little cynical and a little jaded. Especially in a business like mine, where at times we can be quite spoiled. Seeing everything through Damian’s eyes has made things really special again. I think I’ve become much nicer. Plus, I think I understand the male sex a bit better by having one sitting next to me all the time. Simpler than us,” she says with a long pause. “Simpler.” G

I’m in Los Angeles for a few weeks looking for a new home. The property market is crazy—a house goes in a week, and whether you have two million dollars to spend, or thirty, there is very little available. So instead, I’ve decided to try every hotel in town…it’s so much fun! Right now, I am happily cuddled up in a quirky cottage at Chateau Marmont, where stars flow in and out, and women generally look like stunning rare flowers. Every day is a photographic opportunity at the Chateau. I was sitting with girl-about-town and candle designer Tobi Tobin, when Sam Taylor-Johnson walked in. Not only did Sam direct Fifty Shades of Grey, you should see her visual art in London, where she’s celebrated as one of GB’s greatest talents. Uma Thurman was at the next table, looking stunning and a trifle modest. During the Oscars, I stayed at the Beverly Hills Hotel and had my makeup and hair beautifully done by Le Salon at the Sofitel

hotel and wore Margot McKinney’s contemporary diamonds in many colours draped around my neck—they stole the show. I was thrilled when Alexandre Desplat, one of my favourite composers, won for his score for The Grand Budapest Hotel. With tickets to Elton John’s, I got dressed up in Alexander McQueen’s gold and black jacket over a Hollywood dress by LA Mania, only to decide to eat cheese sandwiches in bed with my best friend. This month at Genlux, we are celebrating Liz Hurley, one of my favourite personalities from England. I’m sure you remember the body-clinging black Versace dress with safety pins she wore to the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral. Warmer days, brighter sunshine and perfectly groomed slopes. Could there be anything better than spring skiing? YES! Add this to that list: Fendi is now in the skiwear game! This jacket has me all atwitter with thoughts of cruising down my favorite run at Deer Valley in this chic little number—knowing that people will be wowed not only by my ability to chew up that green run, but by the fact that I can now look like a chic little fashionista while doing it. FASHION TIP

As we age, we must be aware of skirt length. Not to toot my own horn...my legs are miniskirt worthy, but that wouldn’t be age-appropriate for me. So when I saw the Roberto Cavalli S/S 2015 Collection with the amazing seethrough panel dresses, I knew they were designed with women like me in mind. We can now have our minis and keep covered at the same time—an appropriate option for women who want to look sexy, but know the boundaries and limits of dressing their age.

Hop aboard the Catalina Express boat service—an hour trip ($74.50 round trip); or, by air, the quick 15-minute upand-down Island Express Helicopter flight out of Long Beach ($250 per person, round trip). Pull into their private parking lot, leave the car for a few days and hop aboard a helicopter. The gracious crew shared highlights to see while on the island. It’s a stress-free way to begin and end your vacation. Tour the island 1,500 feet above sea level in an open-air biofuel H1 Hummer on the East End Adventure for an unforgettable trip to the summit above Avalon. You’ll experience spectacular views of the coastline.

MUST TASTE:

MUST CHOW:

The Descanso Beach Club sits right by the water and is the perfect spot for grabbing lunch. The pulled-pork sandwich, Corona beer with lime, chips and salsa...sun...water. Perfection!

MUST STAY: MUST SPA: Pavilion Hotel located just 14 steps away from the water, is a newly renovated property set in an elegantly landscaped tropical garden. A guest favorite is the complimentary wine and cheese happy hour. With its central location and chic room accommodations, this is the place to stay on the island.

Spa Day The new world-class Spa Catalina is worth a trip to the island

Reflecting Catalina’s rich history and seaside atmosphere, the brand-new Island Spa Catalina offers a variety of signature treatments and rejuvenating therapies. 15,000 square feet of indoor space in addition to an outdoor café, courtyard, soaking pool and vista deck. I loved the Sea of Life Facial. I topped off my visit with a glass of bubbly and the Ahi Tuna Nicoise. Definitely “me time” well spent!

MUST TRY:

For casual atmosphere and great views paired with tasty seafood check out Bluewater Avalon. Start with shrimp cocktails and try the Blackened Pacific Swordfish. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Locals eat here. For a romantic dining experience the Avalon Grille is a must!

Try these great activities. 1. The Undersea Expedition. Sit five feet underwater in a spacious, climate-controlled cabin to watch the island sealife. 2. Zip Line Eco Tour. Travel close to 3/4 of a mile over five consecutive zip lines high above the canyon floor. Breathtaking!

BY CANDLELIGHT SHARP EDGES Jallu Ebénistes is a virtuoso of The Golden Age of Furniture. He boasts the honor of being the only furniture maker in Europe to have mastered all of the finishes developed in France during the Art Deco period. His “Roxy Cabinet” is a museum-quality piece that dazzles both the heart and the eye. It features a maze of artful shears of selenite encased in brass. Selenite is known as the stone of love, and its powerful forces are whispered to dispel negativity. Everyone could benefit from having such an enchanting storage cabinet. “Roxy Cabinet” by Jallu Ebénistes, $45,544, yannjallu.net

HANDLE THE CURVES Designer/architect Grégoire de Lafforest has conjured spaces for a veritable crowd of Paris fashion cognoscenti. He collaborated on the corporate headquarters for Hermès and the Cartier jewelry shops. His take on a lounge chair is an enchanting marriage of Carrara marble and supple leather. Taking its cue from 70s-style

motorbikes, it is a study in contrasts: the coldness of marble married with the warmth of buttery leather; the straight line of the seat meeting its curved back. Made with comfort in mind, it beckons you to slide in to read, watch a film, or imagine the festivities in store for the night. If these candleholders look ready for take-off, there’s good reason: the designers, David Raffoul and Nicolas Moussallem, sought inspiration from rockets bounding into intergalactic space. These striking sculptures are made to encourage the discovery of beautiful realms with or without the candle, but infused with light they take on another dimension. Handmade of nobly appointed Carrara marble and polished brass, these night lights shine very bright. “Explorer Candles” by David/Nicolas, $900, davidandnicolas.com

CIRCLE OF LIGHT

The making of this light resembles the process of bringing high fashion to life. In a limited edition of 10, the artists, Marc Dibeh and Marc Baroud, weave a magical composition in which they reimagined classic techniques. They took on the task of showing the myriad ways they could sew on a space. The fluid result came together after bisecting steel rods and contouring steel thread to masterfully shape triangles, rectangles, circles and diamonds into this statuette that moonlights as a lamp. “Wires Lamp” by Marc Dibeh & Marc Baroud, artfactumgallery.com

Genlux Out-of-Towner

Just in time for spring: pops of color, fun floral prints and a little bit of fringe. Model, mom and designer Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger was born to English and Turkish parents, and grew up in Rhode Island. While still in high school, the beautiful blonde was discovered by a talent scout and signed with the iconic Ford Modeling Agency. Her career allowed her to travel the world, which would inspire and influence every aspect of her life. After years of exploration she married and had two sons in Monaco with her first husband. In 2006 she met American designer Tommy Hilfiger. The two began a long-distance friendship, which blossomed into a romance and eventually led to marriage. They now enjoy a blended family of seven children, including a son of their own. Moving on to the next phase of her career, in 2012, Dee decided to launch her own luxury handbag brand, Dee Ocleppo, which combines her unique aesthetic with an appreciation for global travel. Her designs focus on style and function with expert craftsmanship and timeless glamour. Taking a cue from 60s and 70s fashion, Dee Ocleppo handbags, totes and clutches use exotic materials such as painted python, raffia, fox fur, lizard and rich suede. Her new collection features bold, bright colors and patterns, while reimagining shape and what “versatile luxury” means to the modern jetsetter. –Courtney Fortune

On and Off the Plane Where do you stay? We always stay at the Peninsula. My son loves the rooftop pool, and I am obsessed with the nacho chips.

What’s in your carry-on? Currently, I’m Dee Ocleppo carrying the roomy Nantucket Nantucket. It’s the perfect beach tote, bag, $1495, deeocleppo.com but also great for traveling because it has room for everything from my toiletries to my son’s toys. It’s luxurious, whimsical, and at the same time practical.

The Peninsula Beverly Hills, 310- 551-2888

How do you make your hotel room feel more like home? As cliché as it might sound, home is where my heart and family are. However, there are a few tricks I’ve picked up over the years. At the Peninsula, I always request the same room, and when we arrive, the pillows on the bed have our monograms on them. It’s a really nice touch.

What are your packing essentials for LA? My wardrobe tends to be more casual and laid back for LA. Jeans and a t-shirt are a must. I jazz up the basics with a Nassau bag; the black leather is my favorite for spring.

Dee Ocleppo Nassau bag, $2795, deeocleppo.com

Red-eye or morning flight? Red-eye. You can always buy Visine.

What do you wish New York had that LA has? Sunshine!

What do you wish LA had more of that you have in New York? Public transportation and more delivery service

Dee‛s LA Favorites Shops: Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, not only to pay homage to NYC, but also to visit my collection. I also love Maxfield and Lily et Cie for vintage.

Restaurants: Madeo is at the top of my list. At Chateau Marmont, I love The Shephard’s pie. For ambience, I would head to the The Soho House. The views of LA are breathtaking.

106 GENLUX SPRING 2015

The Beach? I love the water. Any chance I get to be close to it, I take it. I often design with the water in mind. My Spring Collection is a perfect example: whimsical bags topped with brightly colored fringed basket-woven covers.

Neighborhood: Silverlake. My stepdaughter Ally lives there. Ally’s first baby was born this month, so we have even more reason to visit. I also enjoy exploring all the little shops and restaurants.
