STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Like everyone, those in fashion are devastated by the recent pandemic. It’s anyone’s guess how things will eventually play out, but a harsh recovery is more likely than not. Even Neiman Marcus, the bellwether of upmarket retail, is, dare I say it, only days from filing for bankruptcy protection. This news comes as we’ve barely had time to mourn the loss of Barneys New York. Hopefully, Neiman Marcus will survive. We need our brick-and-mortar retailers. You need them. One cannot possibly appreciate fine-quality fabrics, draping, stitching, and tailoring without being nose-close to pieces from luxury brands like CHANEL , VALENTINO , or DIOR. You need the experience of strolling through pristine shops gleaming with fresh runway looks, so evenly spaced on the rails. Our soul requires the joy of observing the sales associate wrapping and painstakingly placing our purchase— as if it were made of Reidel glass—into the glossy oversized tote. And what about the euphoric victory lap through the store or down Rodeo, clutching our win like an Oscar? Sorry, but these palpable realities cannot be replaced by iPads and brown paper packages delivered by UPS. Fortunately, the majority of this issue of Genlux was created ere the guardrail fell. Our executive fashion editor, Mindy Saad, styled two brilliant fashion stories in New York: One with photographer Nathalie Gordon of model Jisu (p26); and the other with shooter Samantha Rapp of model Frances Coombe (p36). At his studio in West Hollywood, lensmaster Robert Lynden photographed Ksenia Solo—a lovely and talented actress. She stars in History’s Blue Project—a clever series about the mid-century public panic over flying saucers and aliens (p80). Meanwhile, veteran Genlux shooter Ragan Wallake and stylist Christine McNown had the honors of photographing philanthropist/Genlux luxury fashion editor, Laura Dunn, at her spectacular home in Beverly Hills (p48).

Also pre-virus, J.F. Alix, an agent at Industry, emailed photos of a stunning biracial model, Jayden Robison. We could hardly contain our excitement. Her book all but guaranteed she could serve up elegance with a healthy helping of attitude. Our glam squad (whom I’ve had the honor of working with for 14 years) included hairstylist Robert Steinken and makeup artist Camille Clark. I also brought first-time Genlux stylist Candice Kao into our mix. In the end, the images by photographer Robert Lynden (p62) demonstrate our enthusiasm for Jayden, who turned out to be way more delightful in person. She’s witty, insightful, self-reflective, and, for someone who has endured an unfair share of personal pain, surprisingly upbeat and positive. After poring over the 2,500+ photos taken that day, it was the Kansas-born beauty in a gorgeous silk and lace ESCADA blouse who won the day and graces this month’s cover. Speaking of big wins, ESCADA , the German fashion house, is now under the capable stewardship of Beverly Hills investor Michael Reinstein. His private equity company, Regent, whose portfolio includes Lillian Vernon and Sassoon, recently purchased the German luxury brand with the promise of building on the legacy Margaretha Ley started in 1978. Though it is one heck of a time for brand restructuring, history shows that catastrophic times are often followed by inventive and disruptive forms of art, music, and fashion, which in turn ignite our world’s hope and optimism. In other words, we’ll need fashion to light things up—now, more than ever.

Three blessings? One and two, my children, Beau and Stevie Dunn. Number three is the life I’m blessed to lead. It’s beyond measure, and there is not just one blessing.. DNA change? I’d like to change so many things, but at this age... I better just get over that shit. Your passion? I have a few passions—my first being fashion. I’m a bit of a fashion psychic, because usually around a year before a trend hits, I’m already on the hunt. I am also passionate about my family, healthy living, my spirituality, and ANTI-AGING. Favorite getaway? Anywhere with white sand and water so clear you can see 15 feet down. Fantasy dinner? I’d have my mother, Princess Diana, John F. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Jackie Onassis.

Childhood idols? Kelly Emberg was my model idol. Farrah Faucet was my actress idol. School bullying? Luckily I was never really bullied. But, my family didn’t have much money when I was growing up, so I heard rumblings about how poor we were, which hurt. So there was always that ‘having less than’ feeling. My father picked one of the nicer communities for us to live—I think he did that to fuel our aspirations. Early heartbreak? I was runner up in the Miss Illinois in the Miss USA Pageant and I was somewhat devastated. Years later, when I moved to Dallas and then on to Europe, I realized my life would have been so different and most likely nowhere near as fabulous had I won. Big lesson. Guilty pleasure? Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! Beau told me I needed to quit sugar... umm, no. Happiest moment(s)? Two... Beau and Stevie Dunn. Favorite quote? Never Let Anyone Treat you Like a Yellow Starburst...You are a Pink Starburst!

Self description? Honest, Spiritual, Bubbly, Real, Shiny.

Your hero? My mother was my hero. If the world had 30% of her kindness, it would be a better place. There is not one person who met her that didn’t love her. I feel like I must have done something right to have her as my mother, and if I ever think about being naughty, I reflect on WWAD...What Would Arlene Do?

INTER

VI

You’re wearing? I’m wearing my favorite black Free City sweats at the moment... but please trust me, not my first choice. I seriously wish we were past COVID-19, and I was going out wearing my new black Alexandre Vauthier dress. It’s his signature sexy deep-V, mid-length with a ruche waist that hugs in the perfect places! It arrived two weeks ago, and while trying it on, life felt normal and beautiful for a few minutes. Throw on some Louboutins... and it doesn’t get any better! Oh, wait.... I’m still in sweats.

LA

Sheltering in place during COVID-19 has been easier for some, like Genlux luxury fashion editor, Laura Dunn. She’s safe at home with her French bulldog, Petunia, where her media room, three swimming pools, tennis court, and threehole golf course help pass the time. Laura tells it like it is on our Genlux Two-Word Interview, um, by email, of course.

A DU N

Beauty secret? Fabulous dermatologists, Dr. Mark Rubin and Dr. Derek Jones. Haircare secret? Hairdresser Reece Walker. Nightstand read? Healing Your Heart by Changing Your Mind, by Jeffrey L. Gurian. I’ve also been reading and re-reading Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill, since I was eight years old. Everyday style? Classically edgy with splashes of shiny. Friend’s analysis? My friends would say I am very down to earth (in a glamorous way), generous, and real—like the Velveteen Rabbit. Your hobbies? I collect heart rocks and shells, and I’ve started painting recently. Favorite charities? Children’s Action Network, Art of Elysium, Red Eye Charity, and The Watts Empowerment Center. I also started a charity called LUNCH with LOVE. We prepare 50 to 100 meals in my kitchen and then deliver them around the Los Angeles area. It’s a blessing to see our team moved to happy tears when they hand a hungry person food and feel their palpable gratitude. Last Valentine’s Day, we had a crew go out with dinners and Valentines— it was one of the most memorable evenings of my life. Seeing someone opening your homemade Valentine with so much thankfulness— again, it brought tears to our eyes. G

OKAY, LAURA DUNN, NOW PLEASE RATE YOURSELF ON A SCALE FROM 1-10. Romantic: 8 to 10, it just depends on the moment. Romance is so important, and I could not imagine being with a man that was not 100% romantic. Sensitive: 10, I may not seem like a sensitive being, but I am as sensitive as they come. Affectionate: 5 to 10, again, it all depends on the moment. Judgemental: 6, I can be, but I am working on being non-judgemental, it’s the only way to live. Emotional: 5 to 8, depends on the situation. Fashionable: 10, I think I am. Competitive: 5 to 10, I can be very competitive... and other times not care. Again, it depends on the situation. Forgiving: 1 to 10, working on being 100% forgiving. I am a work in progress. Nurturing: 7, I can be very nurturing and very overly protective. Compassionate: 10, always. Critical: 7, again a work in progress. Generous: 10, to a fault. If I have it... I want you to have it as well. Honest: 10, unless it will hurt someone.

First cover? Spaces magazine in Kansas City, when I was 15. Career challenges? Living in a model apartment with eight other girls, battling hundreds for a job, sleeping on bunk beds, fresh out of school trying to maneuver huge cities all while learning how to be an adult, no family around. It’s tough. You change, everything changes. You go back home, and you may be just a little too snarky for Kansas, but now you’re a city girl, a city slicker. Biggest heartbreak? I’m a fortunate person, though I’ve also experienced different forms of hell—everything from chronic illness to when my father died in a car accident to going through financial hardships and borderline homelessness.

Love department? Love has been my biggest adversity. I’ve not loved myself properly, which allowed others not to love me properly. It’s tough to have a job like mine with the ‘love goals’ I have. It’s hard to make long-term relationships with people you see for two months then never again, and the white picket fence doesn’t fit around a skyscraper very well. Best defense? It’s sad. I’ve managed to become an outof-sight-out-of-mind person. You have to get a handle on yourself and your feelings; otherwise, you won’t survive without that exterior layer. Biggest victories? Graduating high school early to move to New York and to become a model who earned a seat at the table—a platform to speak on. My victories are seeing myself on a cover of a magazine, being able to trust myself, and being a good person through EVERYTHING! At times, survival has been a victory. Daily challenges? They vary. The challenge of having a job with the instability of a wave. The challenge of being diligent about my health, because I’ve lost plenty of work due to my stomach disease. And the challenge of friends and family asking why aren’t I married yet? Client list? I’ve worked with Revolve, Paige Denim, and Brighton. A few beauty campaigns for Anastasia Beverly Hills. I’ve shot for Elle and Marie Claire. I’ve done a lot of bridal and worn hundreds of wedding gowns.

First agency? By the fourth grade, I was model height— five-foot-ten. At 15, I signed with Exposure, Inc. in Kansas. Then, at 17, I took my savings and moved to New York and signed with Trump Models. So, there’s that story. By 2016, it was affecting work because people didn’t want to work with Trump. I came to LA, and now I’m with Industry models.

EW

First shot? I started modeling at 7. It was a weird mall competition through Dillard’s that I won, but it sold me on modeling. Then I did a competition at 9, this time with adults, and I won again. I remember I walked out with red lipstick that I’d put on myself. In the photos, all you see is red—everywhere.

JAY

JAYDEN ROBISON ON OUR GENLUX TWO-WORD INTERVIEW

UX

Fantasy dinner? My dinner guests would be my dad because we have a few things we still need to talk about. I’d have Whitney Houston because my first word as a baby was ‘shoop’ from one of her songs, and I’d love to experience that beautiful elegance and the depth of her being. Three more? Okay, well, Snoop Dog, and I feel like I need a comedian, so Chelsea Handler. I like how she’s going around as a person of privilege who is an advocate to find out about other cultures. And truthfully, I’d love to have Sophia Loren—just an idol. I’ve always found her stunning. I’d love to hear about a period of time that seemed so fabulous. Your quote? Ever since I was 12, I said I don’t want to change the world, but I want to touch it. Weirdly, I’m still on this mission. Your faith: My family is Catholic and Christian, though I’m more spiritual. With things that have happened in my life, I’m like, how on earth did that make sense. To have something to believe in is essential. Whether it’s God, Allah, or yourself—you’ve got to have something to believe in, or you’re just a robot. Charity causes? I’m a huge animal activist. In particular, the horse and carriage situation in New York. Motherhood desires? I’m very maternal, and my heartstrings for children have been pulled from when I was very young. I can’t wait— even if I adopt. Sperm donor, sure. Becoming a mom would consume me, and I would love that.

Favorite flower? A rose. I named my dog California Rose. I call her Calirose. Exercise routine? My form of exercise: see stairs, take them. I like to walk. I’m naturally thin through all of my muscle memory from sports. It’s that and disguising the weight through my height. Biggest worry? The world! My huge fear of having kids because of global warming. Or, all the senseless killings. Cancer. All the race issues— how are we still there? And the election that brought about people’s balls to exert an issue. Any fears? I have an uncanny fear of cops. I haven’t been in any trouble, but you’d think I was El Chapo or something. I was pulled over once, and it was handled very wrong. I was on Ventura in Encino in an old MercedesBenz, and they had me get out of the car without asking my name. They asked me if I had any weapons. I’m very polite, so they let me go. Your passion? I love what I do and I’m grateful for being a model. To be honest, I’ve had shoots go so well that after we finished, I’ve cried. Your hero? Hopefully, this won’t sound narcissistic, but as I’m aging, I would say... ME! I feel like a Phoenix of reinvention and a little heroesque. I’ve gone through hell and high water and figured out how to come back on top while keeping my morals intact. It has nothing to do with looks or career. I use my experiences to be my own self-motivator.

HEY, JAYDEN ROBISON, NOW PLEASE RATE YOURSELF ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 Romantic: 10, with the right inspiration, there are no lengths I won’t go to, including movie scenes I’m practically re-staging. Sensitive: 10, though you wouldn’t know it as an acquaintance, my inner self is tuned-in with not only my emotions but everyone else’s. Affectionate: 5, I can’t be touched by anyone who I’m not romantic with, and even that’s iffy. We’ve all been through something, and we have whatever defense mechanisms we need.

My drive is off of my passion—nothing less. Forgiving: 0/5, hard to answer because I don’t really take things personally unless, they were in fact, horribly personal, and then it’s hard to forgive. However, there’s power and the strength to heal when you forgive others. Nurturing: 8-9, some are born with it, some aren’t. I was raised by women who didn’t entirely grasp that concept, so taking my experiences and doing different shows just how nurturing I can be. Compassionate: 10, I get people, and I get there’s a different story for everyone. I don’t see race, color, I see a story and act accordingly. Critical: 10, can we say tightly wound? Analytical? Generous: 10, what’s mine is yours, my love— especially if it makes you happy. Honest: 10, if I can’t accept myself every day in the mirror and know I am who I am and be okay with that, I have failed. I don’t do things that cause the reaction of a lie.

Romantic: 10 - What can I say, romance fuels my fire. Actress Ksenia Solo answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire: You’re wearing? Dark blue rag & bone jeans, a white fuzzy TNA sweater, a Boda Skins leather jacket and knee-high Stuart Weitzman boots.

Fantasy dinner? I’d have the Dalai Lama, Tony Robbins, Elizabeth Taylor, Beyoncé and David Blaine.

Self analysis? I’m curious, passionate, openminded, hard-working, and adventurous.

Favorite quote? ‘Don’t believe everything you think.’ - Byron Katie

Three blessings? My supportive family, having a job that lets me be creative and travel the world, and the love of my life, my little dog Tino.

Biggest regret? A project I once did.

Your passion? Storytelling, fashion and music. Your hero? Growing up it was Meryl Streep, and now, it’s the women in my family. Childhood crush? I had a Marky Mark poster in my high school locker. Childhood bullying? I was bullied mostly for my petite frame and big, curly hair. Biggest heartbreak? When I was a teenager, I was babysitting a dog, and he ran across the street and got hit by a car and died. It was unexplainably heartbreaking. Guilty pleasure? Love is Blind on Netflix Happiest moment? I have many, but one of them is when I booked my very first acting job. I was the happiest kid on the planet. Beauty secret? When I can cultivate inner peace, I feel my best. Also, a clean diet and as much sleep as possible are tremendously important. Nightstand favorite? Right now, I’m reading Glennon Doyle’s Untamed. Everyday style? It depends on my mood, but usually, I like to mix feminine with a bit of edge. Favorite getaway? I love to travel and have many dream getaways, but I definitely gravitate towards peaceful and remote places.

Best trait? My friends would maybe say that I’m open and up for any adventure. One wish? I wish I could be fluent in more languages. Your hobbies? Music, photography, travel. Embarrassing moment? I shot a scene once where I had to get on a scooter and drive down the street. We started filming, and I must have pressed the wrong shift because the scooter jetted down the street at full speed, and I flew off of it and landed on the road, completely shell shocked and scratched up. It was super embarrassing. Favorite charity? I work with Stand For The Silent, an anti bullying organization. standforthesilent.org Current project? Season 2 of History’s Project Blue Book. 2025 expectations? Creating, producing and directing projects that I’m crazy about, hosting SNL, and spending time living on the French Riviera.

Sensitive: 10 - Guilty as charged, but trying not to be. Affectionate: 10 - Bring on the love. Judgmental: 2 - I try not to judge anyone, because you can’t really know what another person is going through. I try to practice being as understanding and as open-minded as possible. Fashionable: 10 - Fashion’s always been an expression of who I am and how I feel. I love every aspect of it. Competitive: 0 - I live by the notion that you shouldn’t ever compare your journey to someone else’s. I hate any kind of competition. Emotional: 10 - I feel things very deeply. I think it’s both a blessing and a curse. Forgiving: 7 - It’s not always easy, and I’m still learning, but I know that forgiveness is one of the most powerful healers. Nurturing: 10 - Growing up, I was always surrounded by very nurturing people, so it’s just part of my being. Compassionate: 10 - Don’t know how to be any other way. Critical: 8 - Mostly of myself, but I’m working on lowering this number. Generous: 10 - I really enjoy sharing and giving to those I love. Honest: 8 - I consider myself an honest person, but I’m learning how to be more direct. Sometimes I avoid conflict and therefore compromise on being blunt with how I feel. Work in progress.

Welcome to a new world of fashion, though, at this Covid-19 moment, we all feel a long way from purchasing a pair of shoes to go nowhere. Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this, we will be easing into the sunshine, people will be feeling better, and shops will be open again. I wish you all safety and good health at this challenging time. Presently, I’m locked inside my silver bedroom, in the middle of Chelsea overlooking the river, and all looks right. Nothing much has changed. I still wear my makeup, my Instagram still chimes, and my sound system is playing my favorites. I get lost in sorting through memories of old photographs and fiddling about in the garden.

As we emerge from Covid-19, I want everybody to stop wearing black, well, except for me, of course. I will not be buying pale blue and pink trouser suits any time soon—they don’t suit me. SERIOUSLY, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT... BY LAURA DUNN LUXURY FASHION EDITOR Let me give a big shout out, thank you, and high-five to all those companies helping our COVID-19 frontline workers, starting with The House of Bijan. Bijan partnered with LA-based protective equipment supplier AcuShield to produce 10,000 face shields. Beneficiaries of Bijan’s kindness are the first responders and local organizations of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles.

APRIL SHOWERS

When rolling through the day during the first week of quarantine sans-showering, my brain was foggier and I was moving at half speed. I realized that I was much more productive when I got up, showered, and put on some ‘real clothes.’ The power of the daily shower is not only important to staying clean and clear of viruses and bacteria, I’m also finding my personal best happens when I feel fresh and alert. Also, the spiritual aspect of showering tells us that a good shower can help wash away negative energy.

SHELTER IN CHIC

I don’t know about you, but for the past five weeks I’ve lived in my sweats. Free City’s are my ‘Shelter in Chic’ choice—some of the cutest, and because of the drop-crotch—the most comfortable ever! They were my non-stop staple for the first three weeks of our ‘Shelter in Place’ regulations. The challenge is they allow my waist to expand along with that elastic, so stuffing my face was too easy without the restrictions. It became time to change into ‘real clothing.’ freecitysupershop.com

Here are a few tips for quarantine showering:

1. Use warm water: hot water can strip the skin of protective oils. 2. Keep it short: five to ten minutes is long enough. 3. Use a non-drying soap: whether you prefer a bar or liquid body cleanser, choose one labeled as moisturizing. 4. Use soap only on select areas of the body: limit lather to those prone to odor—armpits, groin, buttocks, feet, and between toes. 5. Be gentle: if you use a body scrub or loofah, don’t scrub too hard. The same goes for toweling off: pat, don’t rub, your skin. 6. A Must! Moisturize after showering: if your skin tends to be dry or sensitive, slather your body generously with fragrancefree body lotion or oil while your skin is still damp. 7. Keep poufs and loofahs clean: damp sponges, loofahs, and shower poufs are breeding grounds for bacteria and mildew. Let them air dry outside of the shower and replace them every two weeks.

BEAUTY

GENLUX —NINKA B.

My friends, springtime, has officially welcomed us! It’s time to breathe in lightness to your wardrobe and do the same with your skincare routine. This season, I am sharing with you my personal favorites, formulated with skin-loving ingredients beneficial for every skin type! I am opting for breeziness, and effortless beauty picks, which are easy to adapt to your current skincare routine. And will give your skin a refreshed and youthful appearance. - Your aesthetician, Ninka B. @ninkabskin

1. Exfoliation Is Key to Youthful Skin This gentle yet effective exfoliation reveals brighter complexion, smooths out imperfections, minimizes pores, and reduces fine lines, giving your skin the glow it deserves. Use it daily or a few times a week, depending on your skin’s needs. Key ingredients: Jojoba Wax Beads, which provide physical exfoliation; Niacinamide prevents transepidermal water loss, acts as an anti-inflammatory, and decreases sebum; and Sodium Salicylate to help dissolve and exfoliates dead skin cells. Ninka B recommends: Avene Gentle Exfoliating Gel, $20, net-a-porter.com

2. Anti-Aging Facial Mist Science has proven copper to be a superb antiinflammatory antioxidant, helping to alleviate redness, smooth the skin, and assist in stimulating collagen. It’s time to say hello to anti-aging treatment, in a mist! The fine mist feels incredibly refreshing after cleansing, exfoliation, or as a midday skin pick-me-up. Formulated with Copper PCA and botanical extracts, this mist will take your skincare arsenal to the next level. Ninka B recommends: iS Clinical Copper Firming Mist, $35, dermstore.com

3. Supercharged Serum Ampules In case you haven’t heard, ampules are a supercharged serum for your skin. Each glass vial is sealed and contains a small molecular weight serum that penetrates the skin on a deep level. My favorite ampules are from Bella Schneider Beauty. These ampules stimulate cell renewal, replenish ceramides, and free fatty acids. The hyaluronic acid and glycerin coat the epidermis in rich, delicate hydration while providing a dose of antioxidants. Apply to the face, neck, and décolletage in the morning and evening after cleansing and before your cream. Ninka B recommends: Bella Schneider Revive! Rose Stem Cell Ampules, $75, bellaschneiderbeauty.com

4. Youthful Eyes The skin around the eye is the thinnest and most delicate on the face. It needs special attention. Invest in a good eye cream and use it twice daily. My Spring favorite, the Eye Tech, is an instant 8-hour sleep in an emulsion. The formulation is a powerhouse of antioxidants and anti-aging ingredients. It is providing both immediate and cumulative results. It instantly hydrates, brightens dark circles as well as stimulates collagen with Retinyl Palmitate, a form of Vitamin A. Which is a necessary vitamin for youthfullooking skin. Once you include the Eye Tech, it will soon become your all-year favorite! Ninka B recommends: Eye Tech, $85, sircuitskin.com

6. Sunscreen Touch-Ups on the Go Being in the sun feels lovely, and here in LA, we are surrounded by sun almost 366 days a year (2020 is a leap year). Does that mean we need to hide from the sun at all costs? Be smart about protecting your skin, and we can enjoy beautiful skin for years to come. I encourage you to create a habit of reapplying sunscreen every two hours. Powder-Me SPF 30 is created specifically for touchups. It is a broad-spectrum which provides UVA/UVB sun protection. Also, it is pure Titanium Dioxide 17% and has an antioxidant-pomegranate extract. Ninka B recommends: Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen $47 Janeiredale.com

My mission in life is to create a beautiful future for your skin! On that note, I hope you will enjoy these Spring skincare gems as much as I do. Ciao! @ninkabskin

5. Silky, Soft Lips Intensive hydrating treatment for beautiful lips! This balm is a must in my daily ritual. It’s hydrating, smoothing, and protective. Formulated with high-quality clean ingredients that you will love! Pure silk powder, strengthens delicate lip tissue. Nourishing jojoba and apricot kernel oils renew and soften. Apply in the morning and as needed throughout the day, however, the balm especially becomes handy before bedtime. Applying it to the borders of the lips prevents and softens the fine lines around the mouth. Ninka B recommends: Dr. Hauschka Lip Balm, $17, dr.hauschka.com

Making a House a Home.

A family and their home in Houston suffer under the weight of two floods, until Bridget Bergman Design and a team of thoughtful and dedicated contributors opened their hearts and lent a helping hand.

After Effects Home improvements include a steel shingle roof, LP cedar mill siding, new garage door & iron front door with newly built portico to prevent rain intrusion. BEFORE Last year, Bridget Bergman brought us the story of a homeowner and his family, who had suffered flooding and been living with no walls and no ceiling in their home in Houston, Texas. The goal was to make them whole by turning their home into something not just beautiful, but by using products and building techniques that could better

withstand the increasing weather challenges. To date, here’s how the project unfolded. —SK The Designer’s Perspective Now, if you haven’t got unlimited funds, you really do need brilliant, creative solutions. As one passionate about design, I pushed the boundaries on this project.

GENLUX The dilapidated 1850-square-foot home stood ravaged by flood damage. The first and worst flood was a pipe break in the second story that took out 60% of the house. The insurance denied the claim because the homeowners were out of town and did not mitigate the damage. Still in disrepair and now uninsured, along comes Hurricane Harvey which took off part of their roof, and water poured through both stories again. In addition to the water and wind damage, the home suffered from neglect with aged, rotted siding and roofing, leaking windows, and more. Now as we complete the exterior, very little of the original structure remains. In my initial assessment and design to restore the home, it was essential to take into consideration the suffering the inhabitants had endured. The restoration was philanthropy after all, so comfort and quality of life were at least as necessary as my obsession with solid luxury design. These people deserved both. I also wanted design and finishes that were not only attractive but practical and would help Genlux readers with ideas to protect their own homes. The patriarch of the family, a Veteran, suffered

from asthma and had a history of cancer, which had prompted the purchase of the home by his children so he could treat in a city renowned for its medical facilities. It was important to use healthy, green building and improve the layout to optimize their lifestyle and comfort. Another goal was to use products that could better withstand future floods. Houston is relatively flat and barely above sea level. Prone to hurricanes, it was essential to take wind and water into consideration. I brought in structural engineers and soil engineers. Utilizing their expertise, I then built the strongest elevated structure possible. The steel support system involved five steel companies. Instead of pouring concrete piers 20-feet into the ground, steel screw piles — also known as helical piers — were screwed 18-feet into the ground to support the entire addition. Attached atop those are six-inch, schedule 80 steel poles. The strongest beams in the industry, LVL by Louisiana Pacific, support the whole second story base frame. The home lacked a proper master and the backyard had a small slab of concrete with no shade from the sun. Looking out from the small

second-story master were peaceful views of a creek and wildlife. The master closet was the size of a broom closet and if you ate an extra french fry, you could not walk through the bathroom. So I drew a little sketch and went off to the planning board to get a permit. Next, I drafted 40 pages of architectural drawings and elevations to reflect my plans for a floating, cantilevered 450-square-foot addition. Enough to accommodate a comfortable master suite with views—plus providing a large covered outdoor seating area below. We removed all the original flooring due to water damage and mold. Next, we poured a 450-square-foot concrete slab for the patio base outside and then poured a beautiful flooring by Linron that looks like mid-century Terrazzo. It has a higher PSI rating than concrete, which means it can withstand flooding, and it can be underwater longer. Rule of thumb: the higher the PSI, the higher the water resistance. This had not been previously used in a residential application and I decided to pour it indoor and outdoor on the

first floor. It created a beautiful living design that flows seamlessly through the ground level from inside to out. One of the biggest challenge was finding good subcontractors in a post-catastrophic environment. Houston was still suffering from Hurricane Harvey, so the majority of the best tradespeople were absorbed by large, long-term commercial projects with fat financial restoration budgets. This left the area with an ongoing labor shortage. To deal with this, I worked on interior and exterior simultaneously as the trades became available throughout 2019, and I had the help of some exceptional contributors. 2020 brought its own massive challenge, COVID-19 , preventing anyone in the house to complete the interior, so we are running the exterior story now and look forward to a follow-up story of the interior at a later date. I started the job as a designer who wanted to lend support. By the end, I was a project manager, site foreman, contractor, and had tried my hand at nearly every trade. It is my hope, through global warming awareness, that we take better care of our environment to help mitigate the onslaught of weather tragedies. —Bridget Bergman G

Change Agent.

A metamorphosis is taking place in our homeless communities. Led by CEO Mark Loranger, Chrysalis is helping those in need to get jobs. By lending a hand up instead of a handout, they are changing lives. —SK

“It was not by plan,” says Mark Loranger, describing his career path. “Life takes interesting turns,” he adds. “I was an IBM engineer, and before the internet, I spent 13 years with a restaurant delivery service called Take-Out Taxi.” Next, Loranger entered the nonprofit sector serving as a consultant to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Avon Products Foundation, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In 2009, he rose to CEO at Chrysalis, the organization that helps homeless and low-income individuals transition into employment. Since 1984, it’s helped more than 66,000 get jobs. “The transition isn’t always easy,” explains Loranger. “They have complicated lives, so we have to figure out what set of resources they need. We peel back the onion to find out what is holding them back from working. This can take a week, a month or a year. We’ll take as much time as they need to become successful.” To begin the Chrysalis process, participants, referred to as clients, enroll in a class schedule to learn everything from the job search to one of the most critical aspects—the interview. Mock interviews help them answer (honestly, of course) the tough questions, which may include their convictions or prison time served. To companies hesitant to hire from his pool, Loranger calms their uncertainty. “It’s a really smart business decision to hire our clients. Their average age is 40. This opportunity could be their last chance, so they are very motivated. They’re going to work twice as hard, and they tend to stick around twice as long. They’re not necessarily interested in jumping around

from job to job. Bigger than the job or the paycheck is the dignity and respect and opportunity to reconnect with their families. They really treasure that.” One such example is Antonio Donaldson. He had a rough upbringing, made mistakes, and spent time in prison. He had a child and realized if he didn’t get his act together, he wasn’t going to play a part in her life, so he got sober through a recovery program. Then he came to Chrysalis. He finished the classes, and gained employment with Chrysalis Roads, a partnership with Caltrans, the City of Los Angeles Mayor’s Office, and the Butte County Office of Education.

108 GENLUX SPRING/SUMMER 2020

About four years ago, Antonio came to Loranger with a plea, “I want to be a truck driver, and I will be the best driver Chrysalis ever had.” That passion, coupled with a few overcome hurdles, and Chrysalis promoted him to a driver position, and later, as a supervisor. Then, Antonio led one of the Chrysalis Roads projects, which led to Cal Trans hiring him. So now, he has a union job, with good wages and retirement benefits. But the story gets better. “Recently, we honored Antonio at our Chrysalis awards ceremony,” beams Loranger. “We go into the lobby, and Antonio introduces me to his daughter, who is there with her

Loranger believes the future is in the volunteer hands of the Millennials and Generation Y. “Younger folks today feel a need,” he insists. “They have this intrinsic obligation to get involved. So we started the Kaleidoscope Giving Circle to help spread the word about what we are doing. As great as our staff is at 180 strong, we need evangelists and ambassadors who are young and upwardly mobile to help us spread the word.” Loranger boils down the three key traits of a Chrysalis volunteer. “One: A passion for helping people; two: nonjudgemental—that’s a high value for our staff and volunteers; and the third is having resiliency. The stories are pretty tough—they’re heart stories. So you have to be in a mindset to take them in context.” Chrysalis has a four-star rating with CharityNavigator.org.
