STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE This issue’s cover features the stunning Kim Lee, one of the stars of the hit Netflix show Bling Empire. She’s often compared—sometimes unfavorably so—to Kylie Jenner. Some social media posts, served with a glass of hatorade, accuse her of ‘trying too hard’ to look like Kylie. While there’s an uncanny resemblance that even Kim doesn’t deny, it’s purely coincidental. Both beautiful girls arrived at their aesthetic without knowledge of each other. While Kim admits in our interview to having some cosmetic body work, she denies having a stitch of facial work done. A few weeks ago, I got a text from my best friend since the 7th grade. “Hey, I saw you on Bling Empire last night,” Christopher wrote. I assured him it wasn’t me since I’d not signed the document to appear on camera, to which he then sent a zoomed-in screenshot of me talking to Dr. Gabriel Chiu, husband of Christine Chiu (one of the show’s stars). My ‘appearance’ was from a ‘private’ dinner party that our friend Anna Shay, another of the show’s stars, and fan favorite, had at her home for designer Tamara Ralph. I assure you, I am not one of those Asians—the wealthy ones on the show who can afford Rolls Royces or jet to Paris on a whim. They are the crazy rich ones, and they make for binge-worthy reality television. I knew New York photographer Marc Baptiste would be perfect for shooting Kim, but Marc was busy moving into his new house, so he offered to fly in the morning of the shoot. Now, a little history. The last time he flew in on the day of a shoot, he missed his flight and didn’t enter the studio until 2:30. The challenge, on that occasion, was his late afternoon return flight (which he couldn’t miss) dictated he leave the studio by 4. So, we had under two hours (typically it takes six to eight) to shoot actress Maria Bello. Despite fiascos, with Baptiste, magic happens, and his images always sing. For Kim, he made it to the Malibu beach house location in plenty of time to take these gorgeous shots (p94). Another favorite television series is Disney+ Marvel’s WandaVision, where I do offer a word of caution: Yes, the first two black-and-white episodes drag a little, er, a lot, but hang in there—it gets better. One of the show’s breakout stars is Dottie, played by Emma Caulfield Ford, who we met for her shoot at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu—a stunning property with private beach access and restaurant

about a 12-minute drive from the resort. Emma’s photos, served up by photographer Prakash Schroff, capture the woman’s blithesome California-girl vibe (p26). In one of those woo-woo-stars-aligning serendipitous moments, as I was drooling over Rizzoli’s new book celebrating de Gournay’s exquisite hand-painted wallpapers, I got a call from photographer Ron Contarsy. He mentioned we had the opportunity to shoot a fashion story in the de Gournay New York showroom. What, really? I think you’ll agree, the images turned out as beautifully as, well, de Gournay wallpaper (p80). Next, I tasked Robert Steinken with shooting the talented actress and musician Jackie Tohn. Between fits of coffeespitting laughter prompted by Jackie’s hysterical antics and Robert’s lighthearted shooting style, the day delivered some beautiful photos (p32). Later that same day, Steinken put on his serious fashion hat and drew the fire out of model/artist Milena Ilena. Like a six-foot fembot on steroids, Milena works through an electrifying set of movements as the strobes try to keep up with her frenetic pace (p72). But don’t take my word for it; click on the video link to see for yourself. Back in New York, where Covid-19 stifled many of our shoots, photographers Tim Francis (p38), Eric White (p48), and Jurina Gabor (p60), took to their respective pandemicsafe studios to bring us three colorful spring stories. Combined, their shoots deliver fashion’s much-needed optimism. In closing, I raise a glass in praise of our stylists who pull gorgeous fashion for our GENLUX features. They work tirelessly weeks before, during, and the days following our shoots doing the returns. So kudos to Christina McNown, Mimi Lombardo, Nikko Kefalas, and our own Mindy Saad for creating this brilliant issue! To you, I offer the words of Emerson, “Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful, for beauty is God’s handwriting.” G

♥ CLICK HERE TO WATCH KIM LEE ‘MY FAVORITE THINGS’ VIDEO
Kim Lee is meditating at her home in Malibu with her cat, Mochi, by her side. Soon she’ll head to the airport to travel to her next DJ gig. Since 2012, when she first opened for legendary electronic DJ Steve Aoki in Vietnam, her life has been a whirlwind, jetting between Japan, China, Malaysia, Korea, and other Asian countries to play to crowds of more than 20,000. She’s repped by the biggest DJ agency in Asia, where sponsored performances command upward of $50,000. Not bad for two hours of work. On social media, Kim, who has nearly one million followers, often finds herself compared to Kylie Jenner. Though one is Vietnamese and the other of European descent, they look startlingly alike. “I used to get annoyed because people were saying, you’re trying so hard to be like Kylie. I thought to myself, do you guys really think I have nothing better to do than be someone else,” Kim grumbles. “But eventually, I got over that. Kylie’s a gorgeous girl, and I see it as a compliment. I laugh it off now. Sometimes I see photos of her, and I freak out because we really do look alike. It’s kind of creepy!” Kim dispels any rumors of surgery to look more like Kylie. “I had my breasts done at a very young age,” she admits. “I think my doctor did a great job, but that’s it! Nothing to my face. You can Google me.” Kim grew up in Orange County, where she admits to a bumpy childhood. “Since I was 14, I’ve always been the outcast and was bullied in school—a lot. It made me feel alone as a teenager. I feel like a lot of Asian girls didn’t like me. I wasn’t the popular one. I was ugly, and no guys looked at me. My mom gave me a weird rice bowl cut, and I got teased for that. Now, so much has changed in my life. When I DJ in Orange County, they all come out.” Here in the US, Kim’s getting noticed on the street for her other job as one of the stars of Netflix’s popular reality show Bling Empire. The reality series follows a band of crazy-rich Asians as they buy without abandon and host impossibly over-the-top Kardashian-style private parties. It’s filled with cringing controversies and competition between dueling egos. All the right components for brainless, binge-worthy television. Last week, Christopher, my best friend since 7th grade texted that he saw me on Bling Empire. I told him that’s not possible since I didn’t sign a release to appear. But he followed his allegation with a screenshot of me talking with Dr. Gabriel Chiu, husband of Christine Chiu, one of the show’s stars and executive producers. Admittedly, it was me, at a ‘private’ party our good friend Anna Shay, yet another of the show’s stars and an internet fan favorite, had at her home. In Beverly Hills these days, reality show sets come disguised as private parties. Bling’s most moving and ‘real’ highlight is Kim’s journey to find her biological father. Through an investigative service, producers inform Kim that her dad lives in South Carolina. “When they asked me if I wanted to go to South Carolina. First, I said sure,” Kim recalls. “But then something stopped me. There were signs I shouldn’t go.” The show then follows fellow castmembers Kevin Kreider and Kane Lim to South Carolina in search of her dad. In the following episode, Kevin gives Kim the outcome of the search. “When I found out my biological father died. It was a very, very sad moment,” Kim laments. “It was a shock to me. Not the closure I was expecting.” Kim praises the man who supported her quest. “My mom and I are so lucky to have my stepfather, Dan, in our lives. I told him, ‘You’re all I know, and I want to make sure my search for my biological father is something you’re okay with.’ Dan was so supportive.” Not searching for her dad sooner is Kim’s greatest regret. “I always thought he was going to be there,” she says, her voice thinning. “If I could turn back time, I wish I would have made an effort to reach out instead of expecting him to reach out to me. It’s life. At the same time, I do believe everything happens for a reason. It may sound crazy, but I feel my dad is watching over me, and the show brought a gift to me.” Yesterday, news came in that Netflix picked up Bling Empire for Season 2. G

Since we can’t go anywhere, and how much TV a girl can watch? Seriously! I started to order books. I’m happy to discover yet another incredible one called Fashion Manifesto about one of my favorite fashion designers, Gabrielle Chanel. I am still dreaming of traveling, but until that happens, let me show you what I have my eyes on this Spring. I can’t get over the long-lasting, cruelty-free, vegan lipsticks by Patricia De Leon. The colors are so juicy! The new Aqua Celesta perfume by Francis Kurkdjian is exquisitely fresh. It’s like being surrounded by gorgeous flowers in the middle of a Calabrian garden full of bergamot scents sustained by a rich burst of blackcurrant, jasmine, and mimosa. The best new skincare beauty tip? A must-try is Retrouvé Conditioning Tonic after cleansing—lightly exfoliates, clarifies, and hydrates. I’m also loving the very feminine and romantic CHANEL dresses. J’adore!! —Samia Arslane

Last month, I took the first opportunity to escape what felt like Fabian Socialism in London—overpowering negativity and despondency. I do not have a country house in the UK, so I flew to Barbados where I met up with my artist friend Alison Jackson. Equipped with three COVID tests, three suitcases full of clothes, and equipment for shoots, I arrived in Bridgetown, where I had to quarantine in The Crane Hotel, the oldest on the island. Decorated in the Colonial style with shutters, dark brown wood and white walls, the hotel sits on magnificent cliffs overlooking the sea. Not allowed out until I tested negative again, I wrote and organized myself. The Crane gave me spectacular rooms with a large jacuzzi and swimming pools. After three days in quarantine, I emerged, and it felt like heaven. I went to Gibbs Beach to meet up with some English friends, and I rented a house called La Lune—a gorgeous place right on the beach, where I swam every morning. The house was so pretty and came with a fantastic Bajan cook who also taught me to dance. The shops were all closed, but (wink-wink) there is always a back door. Caribbean life shows there is a way ‘round anything with humour.

CHANEL HAUTE COUTURE SPRING/SUMMER 2021
While there, I became an extra in a film starring British actor Colin Salmon about a Bajan detective. I had my hair braided like the girls in Jean Paul Gaultier’s latest show by stylist Shaunte Cumberbatch. I feel I am living a Robinson Crusoe lifestyle, and life is keeping busy at a ten-foot distance. I miss Los Angeles and London and my friends there. However, tomorrow I get ready for life in a new zen space called Zazan Villa.

BEAUTY
GENLUX Ninka B’s Best Eye Care Picks
The skin around the eyes is the most delicate area of the face. It’s approximately 10-times thinner than anywhere else on your body. It’s why the first signs of aging tend to appear in this area. Creating a skincare regimen dedicated to this region will minimize dark circles, decrease puffiness, and leave your skin hydrated. The following steps will help alleviate the signs of Spring fatigue and enhance your eyes’ natural beauty -Ninka B @ninkabskin
1. Supercharged Eye Serum
Invest in a good eye serum and use it daily. The Sircuitskin I. CEE. U.+ firming anti-aging eye gel is my Springtime favorite. It quickly absorbs while providing potent antioxidants to protect fragile skin, improve its tone, and leave your skin feeling lifted and tightened. I recommend applying a pea-sized amount of serum with the ring finger, morning and evening, to the orbital bone around the eyes. Use gentle patting motions and make sure to avoid rubbing and tugging to prevent forming fine lines and wrinkles.Ninka B recommends: Sircuitskin I. CEE. U.+ firming anti-aging eye gel $120, sircuitskin.com
2. At-Home Spa for Your Eyes
Why are eye masks so popular? The answer is simple, they work! The little eye patches have one goal: to improve your skin’s condition. They provide a soothing, depuffing effect while intensely hydrating your skin. This quick at-home treatment is perfect for Springtime when seasonal allergies impact the skin around the eyes. Ninka B’s tip: For an added cooling and depuffing effect, keep the patches in the refrigerator. Use them in the morning as a part of your beauty ritual. Ninka B recommends: Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Hydra-Gel Eye Patches $55, nordstrom.com
3. Gentle Eye Make-Up Removal
The skin around the eyes is sensitive and prone to dryness. Choosing a gentle and soothing makeup remover will effortlessly cleanse the eyes from stubborn makeup without irritating your gentle skin. My go-to is the Eminence Herbal Eye Makeup Remover. Fraught with natural extracts such as chamomile, cucumber, lavender, and green tea, this formula is excellent at reducing signs of fatigue, rehydrating and getting your skin prepared for further treatment. Ninka B recommends: Eminence Organic Skin Care Herbal Eye Makeup Remover $29, dermstore.com
4. Sweet & Silky Dreams
In the evening, rest your head against a silk pillowcase. The precious and delicate silk material is gentle on the skin and helps to minimize creasing and protects the sensitive skin around the eyes. Additionally, silk has a natural moisturewicking effect and does not absorb moisture as its cotton counterpart does. This simple addition to your routine will helps all your serums and creams stay deeply infused in your skin during your beauty sleep. Ninka B recommends: Zima Silk pillowcase, $31, zimasilk.com
5.Sunscreen for Eye Area
Quality Sunscreen is a must for everyone! To protect the skin’s integrity, it is essential to apply sunscreen around the eyes. It is the last step in your facial skin routine and will protect your collagen and elastin from breaking down. Ninka B recommends: Colorescience Total Eye 3-in-1 Renewal Therapy SPF 35 $69, dermstore.com My mission is to create a beautiful future for your skin. Enjoy the selection of products I hand-picked to maintain the beauty and youthfulness of your eyes. I wish you all a wonderful Spring! @ninkabskin

20 collaborations with 20 dynamic women in support of 20 worthy causes. That’s how American jewelry designer, Zoë Chicco, is marking the twentieth anniversary of her eponymous jewelry brand. —Catherine Williams

Catt Sadler x Zoë Chicco 20x20 Collab 14K gold diamond signet “be in the moment” symbol ring, $395, proceeds benefit The Loveland Foundation
I have always been a fan of Zoë Chicco, and I’m not alone. You will have seen Zoë’s jewelry designs gracing the bodies of your favorite celebs, influencers, and probably some of your best friends. If you’re not wearing Zoë Chicco, you should be. I phoned her recently to get the full details on her 20 x 20 project and find out how she built the company from scratch. Zoë is the kind of girl you want to have a 3-hour lunch with. She’s unfailingly honest, delightfully unpretentious, and eager to give credit away for her success. But I can tell she’s a fireball of ambition and focus. Her brand’s beginnings were flat out humble. “It was me, at a desk, in my closet,” she confesses. The early days saw her hustling door to door to local boutiques and trade shows. Nothing came easy. Truckloads of rejection followed but also enough business to keep her forging ahead. Two decades on, Zoë is leading a company of talented employees and bench designers boasting a solidified retail presence in elite stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale’s. “I am so proud of the company we have built. I’ve come a long way since making all the jewelry myself in my apartment in San Francisco 20 years ago. And I’ve definitely learned the value of an amazing team. When you have strong employees that you trust, you can let them steer their part of the ship and it frees you up to focus Tara Mercurio photographed your time and energy at onCalamigos other things.” Ranch, Malibu, by Prakash . into the mainstream was catapulted by The brand’s giantShroff leap the arrival of a pretty terrific boyfriend turned husband.

14K pavé and pearshape diamond ring, $5850, zoechicco.com
A mechanical engineer by trade, Zoë’s husband, Tim, introduced computer and product design techniques and the company soared. “Once he came on board things began to really take off. He even did my books for me when we were dating.” For Zoë, accessory design is a passion. Another is keeping the brand accessible to all women. “I do believe in something for everyone and try to design an inclusive collection by offering a wide variety of styles that can appeal to just about anyone, no matter their age, style preference or bank account.” Her collections have balanced current trends while reinvigorating classic looks. “I describe my jewelry aesthetic as every day, easy to layer style. I think jewelry is deeply personal, and the pieces a person chooses to wear on their body reflect who they are on the inside.” As she approached the 20-year mark, Zoë says she knew she wanted to celebrate with impact. “The 20x20 initiative was born to give back to the community that has supported my business over the years. I wanted to collaborate with 20 female founders, innovators, and entrepreneurs to each create a limited-edition jewelry design. I put a lot of thought into the women I chose, making sure to select from a diverse range of fields, and I have enormous respect for what each individual has created in her area of expertise.” Thus far Zoe has teamed up with Sprinkles Cupcakes founder Candace Nelson, fashion designer Rachael Pally, podcast host Catt Sadler, Jungalow founder Justina Blakeney, and I am a voter. creator and co-founder Mandana Dayani. 15 women will follow, each designing an emblematic piece, with all proceeds donated to the charity of the guest designer’s choice. “I would love to do more design collaborations in the future with brands or companies whose passion and business ethos align with mine, continue to give back to causes I care about and make a positive impact in my community and beyond.” I really want to know what she has in mind, but she steers me in a different direction. Zoë doesn’t seem interested in meticulously scripting her next act, she’s perfectly content to savor the moment and reflect on the values that got her here. “I always come back to this, but I think that my personal mantra – ‘Work hard, Stay humble, Be kind’ - has served me well over these last 20 years.” Indeed it has, Zoë. Donatella Versace wasn’t about to let a global pandemic deter her Spring/Summer show from going on—in a big way. So, over nine days and nights, the crew from villa eugénie built this spectacular maze in Milan to accommodate the beautifully choreographed camera moves as the models strutted through the set. Villa eugénie founder, Etienne Russo, is known for transforming designers’ wildest concepts into reality for clients such as CHANEL, Lanvin, Hermès, Miu Miu, Kenzo, and Dries Van Noten, and here, he does not disappoint. The VERSACE fashion show film, centered on Russo’s masterpiece, showcases how digital presentations in the new democratic-age of the internet can be nearly as spectacular and compelling as live ones. —SK G
