GENLUX SAMIA ARSLANE EDITOR IN CHIEF
A few weeks ago I attended MOCA’s Annual Gala honoring the iconic LA artist Ed Ruscha. The evening started with a cocktail and a walk through The Geffen Contemporary museum showcasing ‘Don’t Look Back: The 1990s at MOCA,’ an exhibition curated by Helen Molesworth. A mustsee! (on view through July 11) Next, we stepped into a sparkling, fiber-optically adorned gala tent with décor inspired by Ruscha’s iconic ‘City Lights’ paintings. The museum also showcased Balloon Dog (Magenta) and Balloon Dog (Yellow), a limited-edition series by Jeff Koons, produced by legendary French porcelain maker Bernardaud. At one point during dinner, MOCA board co-chairs and Gala chairs Lilly Tartikoff Karatz and Maurice Marciano took the stage to give heartfelt speeches. We learned from Maurice that the person scheduled to perform was AWOL. Everybody seemed to panic…well, except for Lilly. She told Maurice not to worry—she was going to take care of it. And, boy, did she! Who shows up? Robin Thicke to support his friend…and he didn’t disappoint. He had everyone on their feet and closed out with his smash ‘Blurred Lines.’ It was such an honor to be part of this incredible night surrounded by talented people from all parts of life, art, design, fashion, film, and music, and especially to see Lilly, who is bigger than life (Maurice’s words). We are excited to feature Lilly (p22), one of the world’s most important philanthropists, and she’s on the cover of this issue.

Every year about this time I head back to Europe to visit my family. From there we take off for Capri, Ischia, Sardinia, Greece… This year we’re going to Corsica and Monte Carlo. I’ll tell you all about it when I get back. I’ll still be working, only from a far, far away land. For now, check out our Getaways features for stunning places to visit. In this issue we’re highlighting Thaïland (p114) and Tulum (p116). Very different places—both extremely exotic. Pick one, or why not go to both? Life is short, just do it! But wait, before hitting the beach, have a peek at our selection of swimwear in Closet Desires (p108) and ask yourself what’s the best style for your body type. Do you prefer bikinis or one-piece swimsuits? A lot of coverage or minimal? One of my new favorites is the Farrah one-piece by Lisa Marie Fernandez (p20). J’adore trop! Our Genlux summer issue wouldn’t be complete without our beautiful fashion spreads by top photographers like Tracey Morris, Paul Schefz, Jeff Berlin and newcomer Eleanor Stills. And last, but not least, please check out our selection of top fragrances for this season (p105). Have a fun and safe summer! Bisous à tous!

At nearly every fashion show, a fight breaks out on the front row. “Hey, that seat’s mine—no, it’s mine!” Fortunately, it was a civil crowd that descended at Unici Casa to witness Julien MacDonald’s stunning show featuring a collection of both men’s and women’s fashion—all without so much as a shouting match. The only glitch may have been the AV system cutting in and out, but the show was so...well, shockingly brilliant, it’s doubtful anyone noticed. This night was clearly Julien’s. He convinced us all that he’s the master of glamour—effectively draping both men and women models in sexy and provocative, yet elegant ways. Certainly proving himself worthy of our crystal Genlux+BritWeek Designer of the Year Award that publisher Cecilia Moreno handed him following the show. In the crowd were Deborah Sawaf, Dr. Gabriel and Christine Chiu, Brooke Burke, April Bowlby, Donna Antebi, Laura Dunn, Dr. Kathy Zahedi-Foroutan. Cheryl Woodcock, Skylar Woodcock, Christopher Renz, Nathalie Pouille-Zapata and her darling daughter Lulu, Michael Wolfgeher, and husband, Chuck.

The event was graciously presented by Michael Foroutan, owner of Unici Casa, and featured a performance by Blue Mood recording artist Sebastian Kill. The models looked chic and modern in ‘wet’ hairstyles courtesy of Chaz Dean and his team, while the heavy eye looks by the 15-strong NARS Cosmetics team led by International Lead Artist, Uzo, boosted the wow factor. The evening was supported by generous sponsorship of NARS, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, and Chaz Dean. Front-row guests and models were gifted with bottles of Chaz Dean’s haircare products.

After losing her first husband, Brandon, to cancer in 1997, Lilly Tartikoff Karatz’s irrepressible doggedness to help cancer charities led to unprecedented fundraising and, more important, to life-saving discoveries. 26 GENLUX SUMMER 2016
T
his Tuesday morning finds me sitting atop a bar stool in Lilly Tartikoff Karatz’s bright Bel Air kitchen. “I just have to finish one thing,” she says, floating about the room giving final instructions to Kristy Owen, her assistant, for the planning of a Mother’s Day brunch. Dressed in a soft cream Roland Mouret dress, Manolo Blahnik chocolate suede booties, and a sensational pair of Vhernier earrings, her lithe beauty is like a dancer in a Degas painting. As it happens, the comparison is more than accurate.
Raised in Los Angeles, Lilly began life in the ballet at 10, and by the age of 17 was whisked away to join the famed New York City Ballet under the direction of legendary choreographers George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. “Ballet was my education; it set me up for life,” she says, “Balanchine was the most brilliant, creative genius I’ve ever met—and probably the most terrifying person I ever met. We loved him, we worshipped him, we hated him. It was all in one.” Few dancers achieve Lilly’s long professional ballet career on the New York stage, but after nine years, she’d had her fill. She returned to Los Angeles where a casual encounter at a pool party brought her face-to-face with her future husband, TV producer and the phenom behind NBC’s ratings dominance during the 1980s, Brandon Tartikoff. “We were destined to be together,” she says, giggling. “I was a ballerina, he was a TV executive. We had nothing in common, but he was funny and I fell in love. The day I met him he got stung by a bee and I never stopped taking care of him.” Much has been written about Lilly and Brandon Tartikoff—his long and ultimately fatal battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma; her dogged efforts fundraising for cancer research. “I became obsessed with wanting to move cancer research
forward,” she says. It was a chance introduction to Dr. Dennis Slamon at UCLA that would help prolong Brandon’s life by 15 years, as well as set Lilly on her determined mission. She told Dr. Slamon, who had been working on pioneering a nontoxic targeted cancer treatment, that when his therapy was ready she would help him raise money. Did she ever. “I had no experience fundraising, but I was obsessed, and I had Brandon’s Rolodex. I started at A and went to Z. I called every person I knew in Hollywood.” She enlisted the help and sponsorship of Revlon CEO Ronald Perelman and created the Fire and Ice Ball. “I wasn’t sure anyone would show up,” she confides. Quite an unfounded fear, as it turned out. Over ten years the Fire and Ice Ball raised $25 million and provided critical funding for much of the research and trials for the non-toxic targeted breast cancer treatment Herceptin. However, this was only the beginning of Lilly’s masterful fundraising. Her next, and perhaps most significant venture was the co-founding of the Revlon Run/Walk. Once again she convinced Ronald Perelman and Revlon to back her play, and this time the CEO of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Lisa Paulsen, joined their efforts. Together they created a game changer. “We now had 40,000 people at a time coming out to support this science.” A total of 38 Revlon Run/Walks yielded an astonishing $50 million for the Revlon/UCLA Women’s Cancer Research Program. It provided the muchneeded funding which would lay the groundwork for the nontoxic breast cancer treatment Ibrance. Lilly’s indefatigable fundraising efforts are a unique accomplishment—though she is loathe to take credit. She cites a long list of those involved—from Perelman and Paulsen to Dr. Slamon and his team of scientists, to survivors and family members of those dealing with cancer. “When people get

behind something like this they can make a difference. I am not responsible; I just happened to put myself in the middle.” She adds, “The thing I’m most proud of with regard to the money that everyone helped to raise for the Fire and Ice Balls and the Revlon Run/Walks is that this could potentially serve 75% of all women challenged with breast cancer.” She may have little interest in commendation for her work, though from where I’m sitting she deserves a standing ovation. After 21 years, the Revlon Run/Walks ended and Lilly found herself in need of a new challenge. She found it in the form of an invitation to be on the board of MOCA. “It’s brought me back to my roots,” she says brightly. “In a way, I am back in the art world. I’m back where I began as an artist, and it’s been thrilling.” She admits that she learned to love contemporary art through her current husband, former chairman and CEO of KB Home, Bruce Karatz. “I traveled the world with Bruce and it was all about going to museums and galleries and art fairs, and I fell in love again. Bruce and the art world added beauty and balance to my life.” “Speaking of contemporary art,” she says, fingering one of her gold and ebony dangle earrings, “Bruce introduced me to Vhernier. The jewelry is so exquisite, so modern, it enhances whatever you wear.” A stroll through her immaculately organized closet reveals a penchant for modern feminine shapes. “I love dresses,” she says with a grin. Her go-to designers, Victoria Beckham, Narciso Rodriguez, and Roland Mouret, are represented in abundance, as well as several recent additions from Oscar de la Renta, a Valentine’s Day gift from her husband. I ask Lilly what she would like to do next. “I talked to Dr. Denny Slamon on the Friday before the MOCA Gala, and said I’ll call Monday and we’ll figure out our next plan of action. I promised the women on the trial I would never stop.” It looks as though Lilly’s quest to fund cancer research is just beginning. That should be exciting to us all. G

You’re wearing? An orange vintage 60s romper that’s hitting below the knee and a long-sleeve safari print onesie underneath with a tie around the neck. Some pointy flats. And I’m wearing some Dita eyeglasses. And a maroon beret. Everyday style? Every single day, I dress up. Even if I go to Target. Sometimes I change five times a day. Fashion influence? When I was 13 I became obsessed with fashion because I loved Jennifer Love Hewitt’s style. I saw her on Party of Five and watched everything she’s been in. I’m also all about the 60s Brigitte Bardot fashion. No deal? I went into Shark Tank with a fair offer of $100,000 for ten percent equity in my new app, FashionTap. It’s a working app with ten revenue streams, so it blew my mind that they didn’t get it. Barbara Corcoran offered me $100K for 25%. Her offer was so unreasonable, and they basically threw a fit that I didn’t accept it. Saddest time? There are a few. When my mom had breast cancer. Thankfully, she’s fine now. Another saddest time was right after Shark Tank. I felt like I hit
an all-time low. Because when you create something you love, and you go out there and pour your heart, and don’t get the right deal… It killed me. Kevin O’Leary is not a nice person. He made me feel awful when he said I was going to be crushed. He’s not so wonderful. Your childhood? I was always teased about my loud, crazy laugh. People said I sounded like a horse. When I was younger I wanted to be a stand-up comedian, and I love being the center of attention. I also love being a leader. Ever since I was a little kid I knew I’d run a corporation one day. First gig? At 17 I worked at a wedding place at the River Mill. I only worked there for a couple of months. It was so fun. After that I started doing acting and got my SAG card and was booking huge commercials for American Express and Kia out of San Francisco. School smarts? I have my degree in fashion marketing. Biggest fear? Not seeing FashionTap see its full potential. Or fear that this app dwindles out because I didn’t have investors. Another big fear is that some-
one with more connections and money comes out before mine. Best dream? I had this dream last night that my boyfriend asked me to marry him. It was this amazing theatrical proposal. We’re at a theatre, and I sit down, and our favorite band is playing, and I figure out this is a setup for him to propose to me. There was a movie that he was in and puppets. It was crazy. Guilty pleasure? I’m obsessed with Oreo cookies. I’ll eat the whole package. What’s next? Since Shark Tank aired we tripled our user base and had non-stop investor meetings. It’s my goal to make FashionTap the biggest social network around. It connects the entire fashion industry on one platform by what they do. With my app, bloggers, makeup artists, stylists and photographers can all make money. When these people tag their photos, someone saying, ‘Oh, what a great dress, I love your dress,’ or ‘I love your lipstick’ can tap and buy directly from it. The people who tag their items make commissions off those sales; Top Shop or the boutique is happy; and the person who bought the item is happy. So there’s a three-way win.

Julien shares his faves on the Genlux video series ‘My Favorite Things’ at genlux.com
Though we recently named fashion designer Julien MacDonald our 2016 Genlux+BritWeek Designer of the Year, there’s a good chance he’s the best designer you’ve never heard of. The Wales-born MacDonald, who has quietly gone about the business of creating elegant, sexy, body-clinging fashion that notables like Kate Beckinsale, Kristen Stewart, Madonna, Liv Tyler, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Beyoncé are swooning over, has led a relatively stealth stateside presence. Not so in London. There, MacDonald received his MA from the Royal College of Art where his graduation show caught the eye of Karl Lagerfeld, who in turn appointed MacDonald as head designer of knitwear at CHANEL. Not only that, Karl also hired him to head up Lagerfeld’s own label. After the three-year stint there, MacDonald was appointed successor to Alexander McQueen as creative director of Givenchy, where he designed both the haute couture and ready-to-wear collections. He’s won British Designer of the Year at the Elle Style Awards, British Glamour magazine’s Designer of the Year, and GQ’s Womenswear Designer of the Year. In 2004, he decided to focus on his own label. One that he’s now— most deservedly—garnering world-wide attention for. On the philanthropic front, Julien is involved with the MacMillan Cancer Support charity as well as being a patron of Breast Centre at Llandough Hospital in Wales. For the last two years he designed the Tickled Pink Cancer Charity bag that’s sold over 300,000. So just why haven’t you heard of him? Um, you have now.

50 GENLUX SUMMER 2016
Nicky Whelan is yet another stunning blonde actress who comes our way from Down Under. The recently engaged 30-something talent says she’s anxious to start a family with fiancé Kerry Rhodes, the ex-pro football player. Here, Nicky answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire.
♥
Nicky shares her faves on the Genlux video series ‘My Favorite Things’ at genlux.com
You’re wearing? I’d love to say ‘something sexy,’ but I’m running around like I’ve done a workout. I’m in leggings and chunky trainers and an old dancing top.
Major breakthrough? When I was 25 I was on the show ‘Neighbors’—a famous soap opera that’s been going on for 30 years. That propelled me to America.
Everyday look? It’s usually sportswear. Fred Segal wedges. Chunky boots. Depending on the weather, I’m usually in jeans and a Rick Owens top. I’m dressy casual. I’m rockin’ some awesome boots from Gregory’s or oldschool chunky trainers from Monika Chiang.
Guilty pleasure? Chocolate. Everything chocolate. I love chocolate. I always have a big bowl of Kisses and M&Ms. Both plain and peanut.
Your start? A photographer saw me when I was 13 and took photos. From there, my sister Katie was involved in modeling so I branched off of a few people she knew, and it all grew from there. First gig? A travel show called ‘Postcards’—my first TV gig. Huge horseracing event. It was always TV shows and hosting and presenting. I worked with people who were willing to train me. I didn’t do any courses or anything like that. Your passion? It’s always been performing. I was a promo girl in my teens and a dancer for 20 years. Cheerleader for the professional Melbourne Storm rugby and the Melbourne Tigers basketball team. Favorite charity? The TACA event for autism. It’s a great organization. One of my nephews has autism. Every year there’s a big fundraiser. I also do anti-bullying campaigns. In Australia I was involved with ovarian cancer causes. I’m getting involved in animal rights causes.
Photographer: PAUL SCHEFZ / Schefz.com Stylist: HAZEL PEPPER / HazelPepperStylist.com Makeup Artist: SOOYOO KIM / SooYooKim.com Hair: MARINA MAGLIACCIO using Oribe / TheRexAgency.com Video: DARREN STONE / DarrenStonePhotography.com Art Direction: STEPHEN KAMIFUJI
Childhood bullying? I was picked on and bullied for being the “blonde model” and had to change schools because of it. I looked after a lot of kids who were bullied and got into fights because of it. I was the leader in my group. It’s not just the child who’s not good at something that gets bullied. All sorts of kids get bullied. I had a very tough dad who made me very tough. I really developed a thick skin that’s helped me through the years. It’s a roller-coaster career, so you’ve got to have some thick skin. Greatest fear? Growing up I had a fear of the unknown, but for some reason I was also more fearless. As I’ve grown older I’ve lost my big fear. My priorities have changed. I have a different kind of confidence. Back then it was run and gun and hope for the best and give everything a crack. I’m more conservative about my choices now. Saddest time? My grandparents passing away. Also adapting to a new country. I was very sad to leave my great family in Australia for my career. Love life? I just got engaged in February, so we hope to start a family soon. We’re just planning it now. I’ve had an incredible career, so to do a little bit of family time will be a new adventure for me. What’s next? I’d like to continue on with television. I was on a show called ‘Matador’ by Robert Rodriguez. I’ve worked with some great people, and I’m also getting into producing. G

98 GENLUX SUMMER 2016
The rain continues here in London. The weather pushes me to escape a lot, mostly to Taormina in Sicily. You may have noticed that all my picks for this issue are black (not your typical bright, cheerful summer color of choice). I’ve been wearing black since I was a child. I enjoyed being a funeral gnome, a gothic dark figure as a teenager…so you see, little changed. I might wear a different length of skirt, but black always makes me look my most interesting, and though I suit most colors, and love colors on others, I prefer black. A black dress will take me through the whole day, through all my moods (light and dark) and I will look as smart in the evening as I did first thing. When at the film festivals in Cannes and Taormina, you may only have time between films to change a necklace and put on some fresh lipstick. I prefer red lipstick contrasting my blonde hair. It makes me feel like a Hollywood actress—and isn’t that is what life is all about? Feeling comfortable, confident and happy? At the moment I am going to lunch with Harvey Keitel and then to a lecture with Oliver Stone. I will wear the same Maje dress with a CHANEL bag and Alexander McQueen leather studded jacket, or my favorite Saint Laurent green leather jacket I scored from the outlets while in Palm Springs. I was once schooled about dresses by both Alber Elbaz and Azzedine Alaia. They said people usually suit a certain shape and that it doesn’t change throughout their entire life. It is why from season to season, Mr. Alaia’s clothes are similar shapes, and why to this day they still suit me, whereas I do not suit Lanvin. I am not an asparagus. All of this is not to boast, just to make sure you all understand that black is black; it is noticeable, fashionable neat and great, and if I could wear a red dress as well, then I would wear red. I will probably spend the rest of my life in this positive, elegant darkest of colors, and the only things I wish to be dramatic are my brain and my lips. The rest can remain in tune with the vampires. G

CHARITY REPORT

1O Charities in Deep Financial Trouble
If an organization owes more than it owns, that’s a bad sign. According to CHARITYNAVIGATOR.ORG’s recent ratings report, not only do these 10 charities’ total liabilities exceed their total assets, they also maintain negative working capital. While they may not be facing bankruptcy, their solvency issues put these charities in a very dangerous position. Sadly, four out of the top 10 most troubled are symphony orchestras.

No Hero Left Behind
We all know Adrienne Maloof because of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but her tireless work on behalf of Battle Buddies to bring home four-legged military heroes and other charities is what she really hopes to be known for. Here, Adrienne answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire.
Your breakfast? I had a bagel with peanut butter and jelly. Your passion? Designing jewelry. My designs are sold in Bloomingdale’s and online. I call it affordable luxury. Our pieces are very delicate and handmade. The price-point is very good for a little piece of Beverly Hills. $150 for a drop necklace. Rings are about $100. They are very well made. Guilty pleasure? I like these new crème-filled pastries. They’re like heaven. Everyday style? A great pair of leggings, a blazer and a pair of Prada flat leather walking boots. Looks classy and tailored, and I can run errands and go to a meeting and still look professional. Favorite designers? Donna Karan, because everything— from her panty hose to her eveningwear—it’s all seamless. I like Alice and Olivia because it fits my body. I’m petite.
Happiest moment? When my children were born. Favorite charity? I’m working with Battle Buddies, a part of the American Humane Association that helps unite military working dogs with their human handlers when returning from deployment. Up until now, the dogs were left behind. Imagine being in a wartorn area where your dog—your best friend—has saved your life and the lives of hundreds of others, and the dog wasn’t going to come back. The separation for returning vets—especially those with post-traumatic stress disorder, was horrible. A bill was just passed to help with this.
Favorite shops? Neiman Marcus and online. I like Diane von Furstenberg. Her signatures are fantastic. Beauty secret? I take care of my skin. I’m fanatical about not going to bed with makeup on, and I’m religious about using products every day. I use a mixture of Obagi products. thale blanc Favorite place? I love London. gypsy gray The shopping lambskin with is great and I love the people. beaded suede strap, $242, Best trait? My friends would Fred segal, la, say323-651-4129 I’m humble. DNA change? I need to have more patience when I don’t feel people see my vision. I see things five to ten years before it hits, and I want them to see my vision now, so I get frustrated. I have a creative mind. Three blessings? My three children. Last dream? I can’t remember, but I remember I woke up thinking I’m starving.
102 GENLUX SUMMER 2016
What bill? For the first time, language in the bill, supported by the American Humane Association, mandates that our heroic military working dogs will be returned to U.S. soil upon retirement, and that their human handlers and their families—to whom these dogs mean more than anyone else—will be given first right of adoption. It is estimated that each military dog saves the lives of between 150 and 200 servicemen and women by detecting IEDs and hidden weapons caches. The language the yellow wasstunning introduced in the House guo Pei dress worn and the Senate by Congressman by rihanna to the Frank LoBiondo and Senator 2015 met ball Claire McCaskill. Your pets? I’m an animal lover. I have three dogs and a cat. Other charities? I’m also working with the AHA on a program where they send animals to be with children suffering from cancer. Embarrassing moment? Recently I was talking to a woman at school and kept saying the wrong name. She finally looked at me and said,
“Adrienne, that’s not my name. My name is…” Biggest regret? Probably not following through on a project that I knew was going to hit. Like the television show ‘The Apprentice’ that our family turned down. Hero? My mother. What’s next? I’m excited about my new hangover supplement called Never Too Hungover. We’ve already sold over two million bottles. It detoxifies the liver. It has amino acids, vitamin E oil, and B12. It’s not only great for hangovers, I use it for my hair and skin too. I actually take it every day. We have a new energy version coming out called Never Too Hungover Boost that has caffeine. I’m also getting into the tech world, and I’m excited about my philanthropic work. the neVer too hungoVer™ Prevention 6-Pack comes with six 3.4oz bottles, $23.99, nevertoohungover.com

BEAUTY PROFILE DR. NORMAN LEAF
GENLUXSHOP
Aesthetically Minded
You’ve undoubtedly seen his masterpieces, though you’d be hard-pressed to find his signature. For over 38 years, Dr. Norman Leaf, plastic surgeon to the stars, has quietly and quite anonymously gone about the business of helping people look their very best. Dr. Leaf answers our GENLUX Two-Word Questionnaire. Your passions? Art, music, good books, good movies. Five descriptives? A grown-up, a romantic realist, a serious, self-effacing, caring sort of nerd. Your future? Newport Beach Favorite getaways? Road trips up the coast...or Capri in the Bay of Naples. Favorite charity? Rebuilding America’s Warriors foundation (R.A.W.), rebuildingamericaswarriors.org Paying forward? Medical Director of the above. And teaching plastic surgery residents at UCLA for the past 40 years. Hidden goal? I’d like to be able to play the piano as well as I did when I was a teenager. Actually, I’d like to be able to do anything as well as I did when I was a teenager. Embarrassing moment? Doing the Mexican Hat Dance as a solo in a high school performance.
Favorite treatment? Facials. For more information visit leafmd.com

The professional journey of Dr. Alice Pien has brought her on a successful path that includes every aspect of her patients’ well-being—physical, biochemical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Here, the successful doctor answers our GENLUX Two-Word Questionnaire.
Your passion? Self-discovery…and also find their inner and outer beauty. Favorite getaway? Getting in the R.V. and hitting the road with my husband and kids. We’ve done everything from gemstone hunting to fly-fishing and jet-skiing. Favorite charity? There are many orphaned children in Belize where international adoption is not allowed. This leaves many unadopted children in that country, as most families cannot afford to adopt. Many of the children are sick and unhealthy, and the orphanages are less than ideal environments. For the people of Belize and Central America, where the state of medical care is dishearteningly poor, the existence of Advanced Integrative Medicine and Surgery (AIMS) means that for the first time in history, even the poorest among them will have access to worldclass medical care.
BEAUTY PROFILE DR. PIEN
GENLUXSHOP
Giving back? It’s not so much about ‘giving back,’ as if somehow I’ve taken something from society which I am now obligated to give back…but rather to be of service. Nothing less, nothing more. And not because I feel obligated to do so, but because I feel privileged to do so. In fact, being generous is a privilege that blesses the giver with joy and fulfillment. Physicians sacrifice an enormous amount of their lives in order to obtain the knowledge and skill necessary to care for others. I believe that, like doctors, most professionals who have endured long and challenging career paths didn’t get into their professions to take from society, but to give to it... to be of service. Life lesson? The widsom I have gained in life has really taught me to be more vigilant to protect my own internal landscape. No matter what kind of turmoil or chaos you or I might endure in life, our internal self can always be ‘Clear air and sunshine with a balmy, tropical breeze!’ Greatest pleasure? When I was younger I worked with the Flying Samaritans on medical missions in Granada. When the villagers would hear our planes overhead, they would come running, hobbling, carried by piggyback or rickety carts pulled by bicycles from miles around. In the beginning I thought it was because of the free medicines and medical care. But to my astonishment, many came who were perfectly healthy and not in need of treatments. They came simply to be in the energy and the embrace of strangers who didn’t know them but who traveled thousands of miles at their own expense to care for them. Apparently, they came for love. When I figured that out, I was never the same. Medicine is an amazing license to love others; that is what gives me the most pleasure. Beauty secret? That’s easy: the Spectralift! It’s our multiple laser modality non-surgical face lift. It combats aging and skin damage from the deepest levels, stimulating your own body to do the work. It can remove age spots, melasma and rosacea, boost collagen, renew dull skin, reduce wrinkles, tighten pores, and overall bring your face back to its optimum health and beauty. We do an enormous number of these treatments. Most important, we educate people about their skin and that the body, with a little stimulation, is able to again produce collagen and shed old layers of dead skin. Isn’t that what we’re all hopefully trying to do inside and out... shed the old skin to become new again? Future plans? In Belize working with AIMS, the brainchild of my husband. In my opinion, integrative medicine is the highest and most comprehensive form of medicine that all healing disciplines should adopt. This includes everything from the most ancient teachings, methods and sources to the most cutting-edge modern sciences. It also includes every element of a patient’s well-being—physical, biochemical, mental, emotional, and spiritual—all of which are very important to me as a physician. For the first time in history, there will be a world-class medical campus, a healing Shangri-La, if you will, that’s devoted to developing and featuring the world’s most advanced integrative medicine and surgery, where patients can access their ultimate achievable health. GENLUXSHOP Bon Vivant
Markus Molinari is living the life. His BFF Katy Perry recently took him to Cannes
(his favorite place) to celebrate his birthday while she performed at the AMFAR gala. (Meh, just an everyday event in this guy’s life). Besides hanging out with the cool kids on the block, he’s also a jewelry designer and a partner at H.Wood Group, who run popular clubs like The Nice Guy, Blind Dragon and Bootsy Bellows. When not visiting fabulous places and meeting iconic people, Markus is giving back through his philanthropic work. Favorite escape?
Person you’d like to vacation with? Karl Lagerfeld. We met
Morocco. I can’t really explain the feeling, but it truly is a magical place. I had the privilege of visiting the home of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé—such a special moment that I was able to share with some of my very best friends.
just a few times for brief moments in Paris and I found him to be really intelligent and very witty. He’s well traveled and I would love to get his insight on life, fashion and art.
Favorite items for summer?
Name three items you couldn’t leave behind.
My Foreo face brush and cleanser, my Marc Jacobs dark navy tuxedo, and a good book. I’m currently reading Always Room At The Top by Ganna Walska. It’s her memoir and it’s truly fascinating. Foreo Luna 2 for men cleansing brush, $199, foreo.com
J. Scott Fitzgerald clutch (Markus carrying it)
Favorite carry-on?
My Marc Jacobs reflector weekend bag and my Celine leather tote.
Always Room at the Top by Ganna Walska, $65, amazon.com
What are your working on?
What handbags?
Two of my favorites would be my Olympia Le-Tan 10/16 and the F.Scott Fitzgerald hand-stitched book clutch. Another favorite of mine is the Karl Lagerfeld chain metal face bag—only four in the world were made, and mine was stolen in London at Bungalow Club one night. Then a few years later I found one up for auction at a charity, and I bid on it and won. I can’t mention my handbags without mentioning my CHANEL boy bag that’s signed by Mariah Carey. There’s also my Moschino red motorcycle Jeremy Scott bag, which was also stolen and later returned. Last but never least, is my nude Tom Ford Alix leather padlock and zip shoulder bag.
I just picked up an amazing vintage CHANEL necklace from this wonderful store called Vintage Malibu inside the Country Mart. They have the most beautifully curated collection of vintage.
What shoes?
Most always a loafer and one dressy shoe, most always my YSL Johnny boot.
How do you go from day to night without taking your entire closet with you? I’m a meticulous planner and don’t like to have a lot of
clutter. Depending on the day, I will try to plan casual-to-evening integration as much as I can. If the evening calls for a much more dramatic look, I have no problem bringing a small bag to accommodate my various jewelry or face masks or bunny ears.
112 GENLUX SUMMER 2016
I’m working on some new clubs for H.Wood Group like Blind Dragon Dubai and Bootsy Bellows Dallas, and we most recently took over the old Voyeur/ DBA space near Crescent Heights and Santa Monica in West Hollywood. Last month we hosted a charity event for Imagine LA called Imagine Ball, benefiting homeless families in LA. We raised $300K. Besides all of that I’m producing my new jewelry collection. It’s totally different from my previous J. Molinari collection, which I designed over three years ago. What’s something unique about Marcus Molinari? I love spending
time alone sipping tea and listening to Edith Piaf on the radio; I’m in complete bliss.
If Seyie Putsure weren’t an interior designer, her fantasy occupation of choice would be a bit more perilous—an international spy. Thankfully for us, she picked the former. In 2007, Putsure founded Seyie Design, creating fashionable + functional interiors for the luxury and design-conscious market. Since then the company has grown internationally to include retail, high-end salons and spas, boutique bakeries, event lounges and more. A few years back, she was named Fendi Casa’s Designer of the Month and was the exclusive designer for the 54th and 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards® Official Talent Gift Lounge. Here, we discover what some of her favorite vacation items are this season. Where are you jetting to next?

SEA SCULPTURE Artist Junko Mori makes breathtaking sculptures brought to life from forged metal coated in wax. Works inspired by organic patterns that bear the imprint of the formation of waves. Mori was moved to create a response to the earthquake and tsunami in her native Japan. This piece brings to mind a burned or charred seashell that has been extracted from the depths of the sea. Raw, natural and moving, Mori has found a way to give the savage forces of nature a beautiful voice. GETAWAY THAILAND
GENLUX Don’t Forget Me Fall in love with the resort’s many rescued elephants. I’ll be back.
MUST STAY:
TALE OF THREE CITIES
Our Genlux editor, BEAU DUNN, travels to all three Four Seasons Resorts in Thailand for an unforgettable experience with nature 1. The Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle is a one-
of-kind experience. This all-inclusive luxury resort is located on Thailand’s Golden Triangle—once the center of all poppy cultivation there. Unlike anything you’ve experienced, the tented camp offers packages that include an extensive list of activities both on and off the property.
MUST TRY:
Get up-close and personal with the majestic rescued Asian elephants on the property. Activities such as wilderness treks by elephantback and witnessing elephant bathing in the river are just two of those offered. “Spending time with these kind, majestic creatures leaves a lasting impression on everyone—yet, each guest’s experience is different. For some, it is an incredible adventure; for others, the interaction is spiritual and transformative; for yet others, it results in unique friendships.” – Four Seasons Tented Camp
MUST SPA:
Heaven Tent The treetop suites are breathtaking
MUST TASTE:
The open-air spa is unlike any other! Immerse yourself in ancient wellness rituals in a treetop-fringed spa located in the leafy bamboo forests. Inspired by the healing powers of mountain plants and local warming spices, traditional Thai services are the top requested treatments. Breathe Deep The resort’s soothing open-air spa!
The Four Seasons resort presents a wide array of delicious options like Nong Yao—the —the openair thatched-roof pavilion restaurant that offers a Thai/Laotian/Burmese menu along with a western cuisine. Magical Morning: Wake up early for breakfast at Nong Yao, where two elephants actually dine with you. Imagine feeding elephants bananas while sipping your morning coffee!
116 GENLUX SUMMER 2016
MUST TRY:
Spend an afternoon learning how to plant rice and transplant sprouts from seedbeds to the rice fields. Wear the morhom, a traditional farmer’s outfit, and learn this ancient farming technique for a unique experience you’ll never forget. Feed and bathe the water buffalos with Mr. Tong and Mr. Tone at the Rice Barn.
MUST STAY: MUST STAY:
The Yoga Barn is a magically spiritual setting suspended over the lake in the heart of the resort’s agricultural and natural habitat. For those who want to strengthen their core, the resident yogi is also an expert Pilates teacher.
2. The Four Seasons Chiang Mai offers a traditional Thai
experience in the heart of an area once known as the Lanna Kingdom, meaning “the land of a million rice fields.” A vibrant blend of cultures gives the area a distinctive charm with a landscape that’s still covered with vivid green rice fields. Chiang Mai is fondly called ‘the Rose of the North’ for its beauty and spirit.
The Cooking School at the Four Seasons Chiang Mai takes both beginners and experienced cooks on a culinary adventure of Northern Thailand.
Oh, Mai! The resort’s stunning pools overlook the magical green vistas
MUST STAY:
Dive Right In Add the resort’s many one-of-a-kind activities to your bucket list
3. The Four Seasons Koh Samui should be
on the top of your list. Koh Samui, the third-largest Thai island, is part of an archipelago of more than 60 islands off Thailand’s east coast. Only a 45-minute flight from Bangkok, the island’s white sand, swaying coconut palms and calm waters help maintain an untouched feeling and away-from-it-all. fourseasons.com/ kohsamui
Skinny Dip? Your private infinity pool overlooks the Gulf of Siam
MUST TASTE:
The CoCoRum Bar is the newest addition to the Four Seasons Koh Samui. Inspired by Latin-American tastes and flavors, CoCoRum houses one of the largest collections of luxury rum found ‘round the world. Each drink is handcrafted and presented with elegant and playful touches.
MUST RELAX:
The term ‘white sand beach’ is an understatement when referring to the beach at Four Seasons Koh Samui. Natural beauty surrounds the resort with a range of water-based activities that include snorkeling, scuba diving, reef fishing and even a private boat cruise that explores the surrounding islands. Or how about just taking an afternoon nap—hammock-style?

MUST TRY:
Yoga by Sunset Quite possibly the world’s most beautiful yoga studio
Go ahead, take off your shoes, grab the mat in your room and head over to the yoga studio. It’s built directly on the beachfront with magnificent beach views. Wall-to-wall doors open up to allow the ocean breeze in while you perfect that cat-cow pose. Sanará has leading yoga teachers who live in Tulum as its resident class instructors. Group and private lessons are available. Coba Mayan Ruins: A trip to the Mayan Riviera would not be complete without a visit to the Mayan Ruins. Since it’s a little off the beaten path, the Coba Ruins aren’t nearly as crowded as those in Tulum or Chichen Itza. Coba contains several large temple pyramids that you can climb. This, together with the remote jungle setting, adds to the feeling of being an early anthropologist channeling Did you know there’s such a thing your inner Indiana Jones. as coconut cheese? The chefs at Stairway to Heaven the beachfront restaurant Real The view at the top Coconut Café did. And it’s is worth the effort delicious in the quesadilla served with the best guacamole and pico de gallo! Everything on the menu is good for you—like fresh locally grown ingredients. Try the Real Coconut Shrimp Tacos served on coconut tortillas with chipotle salsa, leafy greens and all the trimmings. After your meal, take your margarita to your lounge chair, located literally steps from the beach.
MUST EXPLORE: MUST TASTE:
Sanará Tulum is a boutique hotel that reflects Daniella Hunter’s aesthetic. A progressive maverick in the holistic community, the ever-so-poised and natural travel and lifestyle taste-maker and photographer is curating the healthful vision of Sanará Tulum. With the combined efforts of Daniella, life and business partner Charlie, and long-time collaborative Toronto-based partner David Woolfson, the Sanará Tulum hotel opened its doors in December of 2014. It also features The Real Coconut, her own line of products which are also sold at Whole Foods.
Your passions?
DNA change?
Creativity...in whatever form that might take: from writing music to creating menus and recipes. It’s what drives me. Also, the ocean, wildlife, and rescuing injured or baby birds.
If I could change anything, it would be to be able to sleep anywhere—literally to zonk out into a deep sleep wherever I am in the world, and not be bothered about noise or space!
Your heroes?
My partner, Charlie, and my children. They teach me more about myself and stretch me to grow every day. And our staff, I’m always in awe of our teams and their dedication to be part of our growing vision.
GETAWAY TULUM
ZENSATIONAL OASIS
GENLUX
Favorite ice cream? Daniella Hunter and life and business partner, Charlie Stuart Gay
Your fashion?
Maybe the best way to describe the way I like to dress would be boho chic. I prefer to shop locally and avoid mass-produced fashion.
Favorite getaway?
Belize—it’s a hidden gem, right on our doorstep with an incredible history and massive potential. Our next Sanará will be in Ambergris Caye in Belize. I found a Mayan spearhead and Mayan pottery, circa 2000 BC just the other day on a remote island!
Five blessings?
1. My children; 2. meeting Charlie; 3. my poor health, as I would never have traveled my journey or birthed The Real Coconut without it; 4. The stewardship of Sanará and creating spaces for people to come into and know themselves better when they leave; 5. My life. It’s an incredible experience and I’m grateful every day for everything and everyone around us.
Favorite song?
The Real Coconut’s Choco Nutty Ice Cream smoothie, made with fresh coconut milk. I stick it into the freezer and enjoy it as a treat. It’s great, as it’s not too sweet but feels like ice cream! I’ve been eating it for years!
‘Running to Stand Still’ by U2. It’s my go-to cover song to sing, other than what I write. I strive to write songs with that pacing and subtlety but I’m not that good! But I love listening to a great variety of music. One that always makes me feel happy is ‘Your Love Keeps Lifting Me’ (not sure of the artist or even the proper title as I’m on a small plane in Belize and can’t check right now!)
You, reincarnated?
I’m hoping I’m done with reincarnations! I’m trying to fit as much into this life and make enough of an impact that I can retire to the other side! But if not, our dog, Milky. She has the best life ever!
Favorite charities?
Currently reading?
Eat Dirt by Dr. Josh Axe. I love this book, and Dr. Axe’s philosophy of health is very similar to The Real Coconut’s philosophy. It all comes down to digestive health!
Both Charlie and I are great fans of social enterprise and figuring out ways to allow people and communities to sustain themselves. We recently set up the Belize Sustainable Development Corporation and the Belize Coconut Corporation as social enterprises, and we are working with the farmers and the ministers on agricultural projects in organic cropping of coconuts, plantain, and yucca to support the local communities.
Happiest moment?
Fondest memory?
On a boat somewhere in the tropics, heading out to some magical spot to skin dive.
Swimming on my own in Sinai, with a wild dolphin. It was pure magic.

GENLUXSHOP
Menke’s Masterpiece
Internationally renowned fashion photographer Anne Menke’s work embodies glamour and her zest for adventure. The same assets she’s pouring into a divine resort in Mexico, the Teitiare Estate. By Cheryl Woodcock
Anne Menke’s images have graced the pages of Vogue, Elle, and Travel & Leisure, but you might easily mistake this lithe, blonde beauty for one of her model subjects. Gypset chic, her work takes her to the most exotic locales in the world. Today, she calls both New York City and Nayarit, Mexico home. It’s in Mexico where she and husband Johann Ackermann, a former fashion agent, have created a breathtaking compound called Teitiare Estate that overlooks the deep blue sea. So enchanted with the natural terrain, Menke often employs the location as a backdrop for her high-fashion shoots. Teitiare is located just five minutes outside the ever-sopopular seaside village of Sayulita and about forty minutes north of
120 GENLUX SUMMER 2016
Puerto Vallarta’s international airport. While getting there might not be a problem, leaving often is. Once you’re situated in Teitiare, it’s pretty tempting to want to stay. Take your pick between Casa O’te Miti, a six-bedroom air-conditioned villa situated on a rocky point with a 200-degree view of the blue Pacific, and Casa Ninamu, a gorgeous two-bedroom suite just steps away from your private beach and the water beyond. It’s a surfer’s paradise. Casa O’te Miti comes with a butler, chef, gym, sauna, business office, library, cinema and Tuscan-style wine cellar. (See why you might have a problem going back home?) But here’s the good news: if you fancy lingering longer, homes in the exclusive eco-friendly enclave are available for
purchase. Teitiare’s striking décor reflects traditional themes found in northern Africa, the South Pacific, and, of course, Mexico. Both villas feature thatched roofs and open floor plans. The property is built on sustainability, with eco-sensitivity at the core of the construction. But sustainability is more than just a business philosophy for Menke and her family; they’ve made it a community project. Seeking to inspire the next generation of global citizens (including her three beautiful children), Menke and Johann, along with other visionaries, Tamra and Theo Koch, co-founded Costa Verde International School in Sayulita, an ecological, community-oriented, multicultural, and bilingual private school. The curriculum chal-
lenges students to analyze and solve problems relevant to the world. The school is also home to a first-class resource center for the local area on issues of the environment. Thanks to their faithful stewardship, and that of others, Sayulita has responsibly transformed from a small fishing village to a progressive community with recycling programs, farmer’s markets, animal shelters, and healthcare facilities. Teitiare is the ideal place for a wedding or special anniversary, and it’s a beautiful backdrop for a tropical ad campaign or a much-needed retreat. And whether you’re soaking in the local flavor or nestled in a hammock caressed by gentle tropical breezes, you might just decide to stay an extra day…or a lifetime. teitiare.com

Minimalism, despite its definition, can be a very powerful concept. And perhaps few own that idea like designer Maria Cornejo. “In Maria Cornejo’s hands, minimalism is not a bland word,” one wrote, “her clothes have a sleek sophistication and always a sense of surprise.” That element of surprise is what catches your initial attention when you browse the labels’ extensive (and I mean extensive) collection of pieces, from ready-to-wear and jumpsuits to accessories, leather-craft shoes, knits and swimwear. Maria’s ideas are rooted in the core concepts of design and structure; comprehensive, cohesive and stylish – but with purpose and perspective. When asked about her collections, the Chilean-born designer describes them as “personal." Garments are almost entirely produced in the heart of her beloved New York’s Garment District, and her business is owned and run by women exclusively. Her company ethos is committed to its social and environmental impact, including collaborations with women artisans around the world. As her brand expands, Maria and her business partner, Marysia Woroniecka, have garnered a loyal following of tastemakers like Tilda Swinton, Cindy Sherman and First Lady Michelle Obama. She's been a standing member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America since 2003, as well as an original member of the CFDA Sustainability Committee. In 2006, she was honored with the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Award. So where does Maria go when she visits our sunny city? –Courtney Fortune
