Three blessings? My health, my love relationship, and my friends. Your passion? Helping others. I get so much joy out of supporting others on their journey towards fitness and health. I’m also passionate about cooking. Latest accomplishment? My first cookbook, Models Do Eat: More than 100 Recipes for Eating Your Way to a Beautiful, Healthy You. Guilty pleasure? Cheese, ice cream, and fries with mayo! Some people call it cheat days; I call it treat days. Beauty secret? A whole food diet, daily exercise, eight hours of sleep, superfood supplements, natural beauty products, scrub, body oil, infra-red sauna—and the list goes on. Fashion style? Athleisure. I wear leggings, sports bras, and T-shirts all day, every day. Favorite getaway? Maui! I met my boyfriend there and now we’re building a home next to our favorite beach. We love spending time in nature; road biking, kiteboarding, surfing, beach walks. Favorite quote? Wake up with determination, go to bed with satisfaction.
Biggest regret? Fortunately, from a young age, I learned to make decisions from my heart. When you make decisions from the heart, there’s no regret. Future change? I’d like to create time to rest more. Awkward moment? When I got my very first car stuck on a concrete block in a parking structure. I didn’t know I was parked in front of it, so when I drove forward, the wheels went up and over and creamed the bottom of the car. I still cringe about it. Favorite charity? Meals on wheels America. They provide seniors with the necessary nutritional support to protect them against food insecurity and to help them live independent fulfilling lives. 2024 plan? By then, I hope to be the author of a best-selling motivational book, to be hosting female empowering events, and to work with companies that do good for people and planet. Justin Hartley, who co-stars with Chrissy Metz on This is Us once said there’s nothing this girl can’t do. We agree, and, if there were any doubts, check out her new song, I’m Standing with You—you’ll be thoroughly convinced, too. Here, the actress with the soulful chops answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire.
GPS Position? I’m in
Nashville.
Your breakfast? I had
two eggs, a biscuit and country sausage.
Libra traits? I’m a
lover of balance and harmony; diplomatic and super social.
Early memories?
I grew up in Japan. I remember camping, attempting judo, ballet, and those amazing Japanese toys! First job? McDonald’s,
and I was darn good at the back drive-thru! What can I say, I love people. Spiritual life? I was raised Catholic. I went to church often and loved it. I think I was always searching for something. Superstitious habits?
I believe in good energy and putting out what you want in return. I like to center myself with a deep breath and visualization before any take or performance. I have been told that two people should never “split” a pole—so I make sure we walk on the same side of it.
Childhood crush? A boy
named Derek that I met at a track meet in Gainesville. He was a runner with the most beautiful blue eyes and amazing head of hair! I can still picture him. Also, does Aladdin count?
Early lessons? My stepfather helped instill me with a good work ethic. I hated it at the time, but now, I’m so grateful for it. Your believers? My
Grandmother literally thought I was the funniest person alive. And my three best friends, who I’ve known for over a decade, believed in me when I did not believe in myself. Thank heavens!
Your heroes? Growing
up, my heroes were my Grandmother and my Mom. They are some tough cookies! I don’t know how they did it.
Biggest regret? I like to believe that everything I have done or haven’t done has led me to the exact place I am now. So, I don’t think I regret anything. Perhaps I just need more therapy?
Recurring dream? I
don’t have any. But I do think I need to create a coffee table book with my dreams storyboarded by an artist. My dreams are absolutely bananas!
Fan stories?
I have heard so many incredible stories from our amazing fans of This is Us. One woman shared with me that her daughter was contemplating suicide, but because of the show and the role that I play, she felt less alone, important and worthy of living. It’s hard not to weep even telling you. Favorite charities?
Operation Smile and Saint Jude. The work that is done for both of these charities is so important, life-changing and so beautiful. Future goals? I’d love to co-write an episode of This is Us and finish recording an album. 0140
In the new film, Breakthrough, Chrissy portrays Joyce Smith, the mother of her adopted son, John, who falls through an icy lake. He’s rushed to the hospital where he’s pronounced dead. Joyce rushes into his room and screams out her prayers for God to save her son. Miraculously, he comes back to life. LA Times film critic Katie Walsh commented, “Gripping lead performance from This is Us star Chrissy Metz.” Chrissy also sings, I’m Standing with You, on the film’s soundtrack. Biggest challenge? The movie is based on true events, so it was important for me to get it right. To make sure Joyce and the Smith family were happy with their incredible story. At one point she thought my voiceover was actually hers. Meet Steph? Yes, we
met [Stephen Curry is Breakthrough exec. producer] when he invited our cast to a Golden State Warrior’s game. He’s just the nicest and knew who I was!
Read reviews?
I try not to read my reviews, art is so subjective.
Answered prayers?
Everyday I pray for the little, the big and the inbetween. From parking spots to how a meeting goes to my dream of acting and singing. Singing career?
I met songwriter Diane Warren at a party, who mentioned the movie Breakthrough, and she asked if I sang. The next thing I know, she watched it and was very inspired by the first responders ceremony scene where the entire congregation stands up to show John just how many people had been praying for him, loving and believing in him. She wrote the song I’m Standing with You which I had the honor of singing. Your influences?
I have always loved Motown, bluegrass and the blues; Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, The Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt, and most recently Chris Stapleton, and Adele. What’s next? I would
love to have a production company, be in a musical, and help other aspiring dreamers to provide opportunity or mentorship. G

Chrissy Metz, please rate yourself on a scale of 1-10: Competitive: 9, you definitely don’t want to play Uno or have a game night with me. Kind: 10, I think that’s all that really matters is how we treat people. Romantic: 10, I am a lover of love and a hopeless romantic. Sensitive: 12, I’m working on it. I have to remind myself nothing is personal. Affectionate: 10, we all need it! Driven: 8, there’s always room for improvement. Should I be doing more? Fashionable: 5, I love fashion, but I don’t think I’m very fashionable. I don’t necessarily keep up with trends. Forgiving: 9, I’d almost say 10, but there are some things I’m working through that I didn’t even know I need to work on. Empathetic: 10, I feel things very deeply. Temperamental: 7, I’m working on silencing the ego while maintaining balance of boundaries so I don’t over react when instances do arise. Critical: 8, I really don’t know how to be objective. I am trying to be a little more gentle with myself. Generous: 9, I feel very blessed, so I want to make sure that I give back. Honest: 6, I have a hard time being honest about my needs and desires. I put other people’s feelings first and I know that doesn’t serve anyone. Like I said, I’m absolutely a work in progress.

The Genlux Two-Word Interview with actress Scottie Thompson.
Romantic: 7. I love romance, and when I’m in that state I’m an 11, but I’m also motivated and hard-working and often in that mindset— so more at a 3, and I think it comes out to a 7.
Your breakfast?
Scrambled eggs and avocado wrap. First job? Apprentice with the Richmond Ballet; the State Ballet of Virginia.
Sensitive: 10.
Role model? Nelson Mandela
Whoa.
Three blessings? My health, my friends, and my family.
Driven: 10 Compassionate: 10
Fantasy dinner? I’d have
Nelson Mandela, Katharine Hepburn, Desmond Tutu, Dalai Lama, and Lucille Ball.
Affectionate: 8,
with those I love deeply (friends, family), though I can go up to a 10, but usually a bit more reserved until I warm up to you.
Your passion?
Storytelling.
Favorite charity?
Fashionable: 7. Working on it.
BuildOn
Biggest risk?
Temperamental: 7.
Becoming an actress. Early dues? I had to
stare at a computer editing graduate school application essays for hours on end. I babysat a ton; which I loved. Acting is a funny business. In a sense, I’m often paying dues by going to auditions and searching for work, but then there are the wonderful highs of working that make it all worth it. So it’s less due paying, but always humbling in this business. Character change?
I'd like to change my tendency to worry. Physical change? I’d like to
change my booty.
Childhood teasing? I was teased
Now, Scottie Thompson, please rate yourself on a scale of 1-10:
Dream co-star? Cate Blanchett
or a wolf.
Competitive: I give myself an 8. I am probably more competitive with myself (and younger self in that sense), but I do compare—which isn’t great, but also very human. I feel this feeds ambition, which can be super healthy. It’s a matter of keeping it in check and coming back to asking why do I care so much? Hopefully, I can temper this side of myself so that I can focus on the work itself.
What’s next? That remains to be
Forgiving: 9.
for my lack of common sense.
Best trait? My friends would
say that I’m a big nerd with a big heart.
Biggest fear? Failure. First heartbreak?
Leaving ballet.
Spirit animal? Dragonfly
told, but I am writing my own projects these days, and intend to bring them to life.
I think I’m pretty good at this, but it takes time with the bigger things.
I can be quite emotional and am prone to give in to that part of my nature, but I meditate daily to try to find more balance.
Critical: 10. Mostly of myself. Generous: 10.
I feel best when I can share my skills, my time, my money.
Honest: 10.

Meagan Good takes the time out of her busy schedule to answer our Genlux Two-Word Interview You’re wearing? I just
came from the gym, so I’m wearing Alo black stretch pants, gray Alo crop-top sweater, Nike sports bra, and Nike tennis shoes. I’m trying to get healthy.
Your earrings? “My earrings are by Jason of Beverly Hills. I’m scared of pain, especially needles, so I didn’t pierce my second and third holes until I was 27. Your passion? “My heart
has always been for young girls and how to empower them. It’s hard to be a girl, to love every part of you fully, to get clarity on what you’re supposed to be doing, and how that relates to exactly who you are. From your upbringing to the way you look to the way you experience the world to the people you have in your life; it’s difficult to have perspective on how good and positive it all is—even the parts that hurt. My passion is to help them see the incredible things they’re going to do in the world, and to know that they’re worthy! They’re always on my mind.”
Your parents? “My dad
was a police officer for 26 years. He and my mom separated when I was four. I remember him marrying my stepmother and my mom missing him.
Your childhood? I grew up on a cul-de-sac in Canyon Country, what is now Santa Clarita. We were the only black family, so there was a lot of racism from students, neighbors, strangers, and definitely from teachers. I’ve been called the ‘N’ word more times than I would like to say. From teachers? Yes,
my father, who was a police officer, would send me commemorative Vietnam or police coins. One day, in class, I was looking at them when the 6th-grade teacher said, “Give me those. They’re going in the June box.” So June came; she opened the box, and when the coins came out, this little girl named Brianna said, “Those are mine.” I said, “No, those are mine. My dad gave them to me.” The teacher told me, “Meagan, don’t lie,” and she gave them to Brianna. Luckily, three years later, Brianna apologized and gave the coins back to me.
Other examples? When
I was 11, there was this other little neighbor girl who would always pick on me. Sadly, I wasn’t even allowed to cross the line from the sidewalk to their house. One day, we were in the cafeteria, and the little girl stuck her tongue out at me, so I told on her.
82 GENLUX SUMMER 2019
And the teacher said, “Meagan, stop lying. You have detention.’ They would pick on me a lot. First job? My first job
league. We dated for ten months and married two months later. It’s been seven years now. Biggest risk? Recently,
was on Nickelodeon when I was almost 16. Because of my schedule, I began being home-schooled. My best friend at the time, and who is still my best friend, was also homeschooled and I basically moved into her home.
the biggest risk I take is being myself as it relates to being a Christian. Here’s an example: In the first year that DeVon and I were married, I wore a sexy dress to the BET awards, where I presented the Best Gospel Award. After I got off stage, I was trending on Twitter. Everyone was saying what a whore, what a slut; she’s not a Christian, and all kinds of stuff. I lived a few years in trauma and fear and walked on eggshells. When I was bold, I felt I was putting myself in front of a firing squad. I’ve learned to be myself because I’m proud of it. At times, it made me better, at times, defiant, and at times, sad. Now, it’s just about being me. The best we can be is whoever God calls us to be.
Favorite tattoo? On my
People pleaser? I used to
was in a Marshall Field commercial when I was four. That same year, I was also on Amen, and Doogie Hauser. By the grace of God, I started doing extra work, which eventually led to being on camera. This led to saying one line, then one line became three, three became five, five became a scene, a scene became three scenes, and then, as Drake says, “We started from the bottom, and now we’re here.”
Television roles? My first
left wrist, I have ‘forgiven’ tattoed in Hebrew, and I have the scripture, Romans 14:22, tattoed on my right wrist.
Your hubby? His name
is DeVon Franklin, and he’s a producer, author, and a Seventh-day Adventist preacher. When we met, I felt like he was out of my
First heartbreak? A guy that I dated, broke up with, dated other people, and then got back together. One day, he asked me if I’d slept with the other guy. I was honest and said, yes. He hung up on me and didn’t speak to me for four months, and I was so heartbroken. It wasn’t days or weeks; it was four months. One day, he picked up the phone like it was any day of the week and I let him have it so hard. We never got back together. Best trait? I try to be
non-judgemental and to love unconditionally.
Biggest fear? Disappoint-
ing God.
Spirit animal? Lisa
be a big people pleaser, but I’ve freed myself of that. It’s in my nature. I want people to feel taken care of and to like me. I’m learning to navigate that better.
Bonet, no, maybe a monkey. I’ve had two pet monkeys. First, I got Esther, then I got Rocky. I had a massive cage in my room. When you raise a monkey, you have to bottle feed it. They throw poop against the wall. When I started traveling too much with work, I gave them to my friend China, who still has them after five years.
DNA change? I have one wrinkle above my brow that I’d like changed. My calves could be a a little more muscular.
Three blessings: My husband, my parents, my siblings, and my cousins, who are more like siblings. G

I am at a stage in life when everything needs sifting and I started with my clothes. I found a charming auction house in the middle of the English countryside, where, Thomas Keane, the owner of The Swan, has brought life to a small village thirty miles from London via his quirky, unusual objects and fashion. I brought him six rails of clothes, and 300 coats and jackets from Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and Valentino. I feel lighter and brighter, and, like being on a fast, I am glowing. It feels nice to have other people discover and enjoy clothing that I once did. Beats lying around in boxes. Here in London, The Victoria and Albert Museum has two incredible exhibits: Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams; and Mary Quant, celebrating the 60s fashion revolution on the British high street. Next week, a glamorous list of celebrities from around the world will gather at the Serpentine Summer Party. I have just returned from four days in Lake Como at Villa d’Este on the waters edge for the wedding of Phoebe Saatchi, daughter of advertising guru and art collector Charles Saatchi and his ex-wife, Kay Saatchi. You can understand what George and Amal Clooney love about this place. Phoebe looked pretty in a Vivienne Westwood couture dress and was as happy as any bride could be. The wedding theme was based on the 60s photography of Slim Aarons and his shots of the beautiful people in lovely places looking stunning. I went to Phillip Treacy in Belgravia to purchase hats for Ascot and for the wedding. At the private fitting, I was advised not to wear flowers; it was too “before noon” for me! I love that, though, of course, I broke the rule and wore a Dolce Gabbana hat full of them. I understand his point, but realize I prefer being a little rock ‘n’ roll.

OVER 35 MUSTHAVE
Recently, the skincare buzz has been all about LA-based Sircuit Cosmeceuticals. Last week, I sat for several hours with the creator and owner, Michael Wolfgeher, to learn about his line. I asked for a cream to use on dry and crepey skin. Michael told me to try the Handsome Luxurious Lavender Body Cream. Seriously, I have used almost every cream on the market, but this one blew my mind! Within 24 hours, my dehydrated skin was hydrated, and with 48 hours I could see the signs of age reversal. Sircuit Cosmeceuticals is so amazing; I will be doing a full story (lauradunn. com) on several of their MUSThave products. Made using science, their products’ proof are in the results. My legs and arms have not looked this good in five years, and I cannot thank Michael enough for creating a cream that finally works! OMG! THE HEAVY BLANKET
On last week’s flight (a lot of those this year) I read about “The Heavy Blanket,” and wondered if its benefits could actually be true. What is the heavy blanket, you ask? It’s a blanket that weighs 10% of your full body weight and is the newest trend in sleep—but goes so far beyond a good night’s sleep. They say it helps fight insomnia, reduces anxiety and stress, improves focus, eases symptoms of restless leg syndrome, helps Fibromyalgia pain, boosts mood, and promotes calm. For your perfect night’s sleep, check for the online charts to help you find the proper weight blanket. I recently ordered a beautiful chunky knit one, and I will be happily reporting on the ongoing results on lauradunn.com
SHORT STORY
It started in 2018, rolled into summer 2019, and now looks like the Bike Short could be here for more than a minute. This past year, we see it popularized with the huge saturation of streetwear—with Kim K leading the charge. Worn with anything—from a simple tee shirt to expensive blouses and insanely fabulous blazers—the bike short is comfortable to wear and covers the danger zones on the legs. Everyone from YSL to CHANEL has featured the bike short, but the best part? We could grab a pair of cropped yoga pants from our favorite yoga store and pimp them out with some fabulous pumps, a belt, and a gorgeous oversized blazer and voilá...spot on trend!!

BEAUTY
GENLUX
SUN VS SKIN
These 7 summer habits help protect your skin from harmful sun damage. —Nina B. 1. Use sunscreen on your face including under the eye and your eyelid! My motto is: I only wear sunscreen on days ending with “Y.” Sunny or cloudy, sunscreen must always be on your skin. It is the last step in your facial skin routine, and it will protect your collagen and elastin from breaking down. Nina B. recommends: ZO Skin Health, Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30, $65, zoskincentre.com 2. Sunscreen, not a one-time application fix. Whether you are outdoors hiking, playing sports or unwinding by the ocean, reapply your sunscreen every two hours. Make sure your sunscreen is broad spectrum, water resistant and has an SPF of 30 or higher. Nina B. recommends: EltaMD UV Sport Broad-Spectrum SPF 50, $49, dermstore.com.
3. Seek shade. When you’re lounging by the pool or eating lunch on the patio always look for shade. The sun’s rays are the strongest between 10 a.m
and 2 p.m. That’s when there’s the highest possibility your skin will get sunburn which leads to long-term damage such as loss of firmness and hyperpigmentation.
Hello, again. I’m your aesthetician advisor at GENLUX. My passion is to help you achieve a youthful and glowing complexion. Follow these points, and your skin will always be wrapped in protection from the #1 reason skin ages: The Sun. —Nina B.
4. Wear your shades. There’s nothing like wearing fashionable sunglasses, but the main reason you should wear them is to protect your vision and prevent your eyes from squinting. Repetitive facial muscle movement like squinting will create fine lines which leads to crow’s feet. So always have your shades on hand! Nina B. recommends: CHANEL acetate and rope
sunglasses, $700, chanel.com
6. Cover up. Whenever you can, arm yourself with a hat. The best sun hats will shade your face, neck, and ears. Nina B. recommends: Eugenia Kim ‘Mirabel’ straw hat, $515, net-a-porter.com
5. Don’t skip the eye serum. The skin is thinnest around the eyes; therefore it is more prone to showing sun damage first. When the skin is affected by sun damage, it will look dry, wrinkly, and some pigmentation may be present. To avoid all the above symptoms use eye serum daily. My favorite eye products are formulated with antioxidants, vitamins, and whispers of retinol. Nina B. recommends: Dr. Dennis Gross, Ferulic +Retinol Triple Correction Serum, $69, nordstrom. com; and Sircuit Cosmeceuticals revelation intensive antiwrinkle eye serum, $90, sircuitskin.com
7. Lip TLC. The skin on the lips is as fragile as the skin around your eyes; therefore it requires the same attention. Choose a lip product that nourishes, hydrates, but most importantly protects with sunscreen. It will provide a cushion of protection against UVB (responsible for sunburn) and UVA rays (causes premature skin aging). Nina B recommends: COOLA Mineral Liplux SPF 30 Tinted Lip, $18, revolve.com.
If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact me on Instagram @ninaBskin. I’m here to bring out your best glowing skin!

Sky Dining Enjoy a romantic 7-course dinner up high in the hotel’s private treehouse.
MUST STAY:
Aphrodite would approve. The Hotel Wailea is a romantic adults-only Maui love nest—a contrariety to Hawaii’s supersized beach resorts. No pools with slides here. Instead, a mere 72 dreamy, one-bedroom suites, nestled within waterfalls, and lush foliage, that blend harmoniously with the calming wood and stone architecture. Last year, Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards voted this Relais & Châteaux property as Hawaii’s number one resort, and TripAdvisor voted it the number one hotel in Hawaii.
Recently, the hotel spiced things up by creating a ‘Romance Under the Stars’ package. It includes five nights in an Ocean View Suite that’s topped by an exclusive 7-course dinner for two in the hotel’s private treehouse. While you’re savoring every bite, serenaded by sweet Hawaiian ukulele melodies, turn-down service is back at your suite, skillfully prepping your romantic evening with a Lunya Luxe Silk sleepwear set, Hotel Wailea’s own signature CBD massage oil, a stargazing guide, and some sweet Hawaiian treats. Oh là là. hotelwailea.com

Enjoy an intimate dinner under the stars in the garden.
MUST RIDE:
Rev up romance in one of the Hotel Wailea’s flame red or classic silver ’57 Porsche 356 Speedster reproductions. The hotel’s three suggested routes will give you a sweeping glimpse of Maui. Note: Drivers must know how to drive a stick-shift. 6 hours: $322, or 12 hours: $406.

GETAWAY ST. REGIS BALI

Cali to Bali
Samia sets out on the 20+ hour flight from LAX to Indonesia for a luxury getaway at the St. Regis Bali Resort.
I finally made it to Bali, though, it wasn’t for lack of trying. Some people say the third time’s the charm—in my case, it was the fourth. After a canceled trip, a volcano eruption, and a missed flight (reminder, if your flight’s at midnight on Tuesday, be at the airport on Monday night, not Tuesday night), I finally made it. Cheers! Two planes and almost 20-hours Samia and out of LAX, and I passed through Yola Pribadi the mystical rainforest gate, at swanky entered the grand lobby of the St. St. Regis 10th Regis Bali Resort, and heard the Anniversary serene melody of Balinese Rindik celebration instruments. From then on, this entire trip was an ethereal experience. I’d been invited to Bali by a good friend to celebrate the St. Regis Exquisite 10 Celebration gala dinner. The lavish soiree kicked off with delicious cocktails created by uber-mixologist Joshua Ivanovic, the founder of KL Cocktail Co. & Jungle Bird Kuala Lumpur. The journey continued with a never-beforeseen Fire Dance Ritual and a delectable five-course, winepaired dinner crafted by the resort’s award-winning culinary team. Indonesian diva, Titi DJ, sang her hit songs. A raffle and live auction benefited rebuilding Lombok through Habitat for Humanity. The memorable evening concluded with a breathtaking fireworks display.
104 GENLUX SUMMER 2019
H2Ohh! Take a swim in the hotel pool, or steps away, take a dip in the 80° ocean water.
MUST STAY:
The St. Regis Bali Resort is the epitome of a tropical paradise. There are 123 suites and newly redefined luxury villas. Mine, a luxurious beachfront, Strand Villa, spans a monstrous 6499-square-feet. The suite’s beautiful Balinese contemporary design and floor-to-ceiling windows overlook a large private garden, pool, gazebo, and outdoor shower. There’s also a 24-hour Butler Service. Each morning I awoke to the soothing sound of the Indian Ocean waves, walked through the garden gates to the private white sand beach, and waded into the warm waters. Pure zen! marriott.com
MUST DINE:
Dulang is the must-dine spot for delicious Indonesian cuisine. The restaurant, set in a beautifully carved gazebo with a colonial theme, offers a courteous staff who greet you with a Jamu, a yummy hand-crafted drink with native herbs. The highlight of the night was my place card transcribed in Balinese.
MUST RELAX:
The moon-and-butterflyinspired Remède Spa is calm and relaxing. I particularly enjoyed the Aqua Vitale, a seasalt hydromassage bath therapy and cold water plunge, followed by a Balinese massage!

Best Brunch The word elegant may not typically be used to describe a hotel brunch. Here’s the exception.
ETAWAY ST. REGIS BALI
MUST CHOW:
The Astor Diamond Champagne Brunch at the Kayuputi restaurant is arguably the island’s most elegant and lavish treat. They serve the most exquisite Asian-inspired haute cuisine— from Tataki Giant Cuttlefish to Crustacean Bisque with Seafood Dumpling. Try the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare with Wakame Kurisu, and the delicious Salted Lime Sorbet. Other favorites were the Blue Swimmer Crab Cake Salad, Lobster Gratin, Australian Lamb Chop, Ratatouille, and Eggplant Caviar. The best brunch, ever!
