IN THE WRIGHT LIGHT

Following the unexpected passing of her sister, Paulette, to suicide in 2018, actress Gabriella Wright teamed up with Deepak Chopra to create Never Alone, a non-profit that provides an avenue of healing for those suffering in the darkness of the soul and to destigmatize the taboo of mental illness.

A

s much as I miss lunching in restaurants, I like the way Zoom meetings throw us into a more casual cadence in our natural habitats. I am fresh from a fight with freeway traffic when I come to rest at my kitchen table to meet Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger. Dee is waving and smiling on my computer screen, coming to me from a beautifully appointed desk space in what appears to be her dressing room. “Thank God for technology,” she says. “I can’t imagine what a pandemic would be like before we had this. We’re just fortunate we have this technology and can connect.” So true. Dee is the very image of a supermodel in a relaxed sage green kimono-style wrap dress and gold-rimmed aviator glasses. Though she is decidedly nonchalant about it, her early modeling days in Paris set the course for a life framed by the fashion industry. After attending an all-girls Quaker school in Rhode Island, she broke out of her self-proclaimed bubble and flew off to join the Karine modeling agency. “When I got to Paris, my whole world opened. Women were less decorative, and they had this effortless style that I really loved. It’s a fine line, but there’s something to be said about not trying too hard. I think a lot of women fall prey to just doing a little bit too much.” In 2011, she launched Dee Ocleppo, her eponymous brand focusing solely on accessories. “The quality is very meaningful to me. I am looking for quality, not quantity. I’ve never seen a 99-cent buffet in Europe! Less is more, and I love the timelessness of what I design. I work for an aesthetic that women of all ages can wear.” For the moment, the brand creates luxurious Italianmade leather shoes and handbags using centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship. However, when pressed, she does admit that she may be flirting with a capsule collection of cashmere. She is desperate to pull away from the current trend of disposable clothing and the environmental hazard it presents, hoping instead for a return to classic pieces. “The bags are simple, stylish, and timeless. And I think a good accessory, a good shoe or a good handbag—something that is really well made—is something that can be worn and passed down. The best things in our closets are things that we get to wear. A lot.” Dee Ocleppo, the brand, aims to take its place as a mainstay luxury brand with a philanthropic mission. At the company’s core is an ongoing commitment to fund breast cancer research through a Breast Cancer Research Fund partnership. “We give 10% of all our sales across the board back to the BCRF, the largest funder of breast cancer research in the world. It’s my way of giving back and making a change that will hopefully someday eradicate the

♥ CLICK HERE TO WATCH MY FAVORITE THINGS VIDEO WITH DEE OCLEPPO HILFIGER

disease.” Dee serves on the board of BCRF and makes significant financial donations yearly. “We have made great strides, but there are still a lot of women who are dying every day, and we have to do more.” Another charity that hits even closer to the Hilfiger home is Autism Speaks. “We have three children, between Tommy and I, that are on the autism spectrum. If you ask around, this is something that affects a lot of people. It doesn’t feel right to talk about your child, so it’s trickier to discuss.” Dee stresses the need to eliminate the hushed tones and whispers that keep autism closeted. “I wish I could say there has been as much progress with autism as has been made in breast cancer, but unfortunately, there hasn’t. I think I have to start working harder because it doesn’t get the same amount of attention, largely because you don’t want to stigmatize your children by talking about it. Myself included. If it’s breast cancer and you’re talking about your own body, it’s easier than talking about a child that you want to protect.” For Dee, fashion has been a career, a mission, and a platform for change. But there is also a deep love for the beauty, creativity, and sheer fun of the design process. In 2019, Judith Leiber, the brand famous for dazzling jewel-encrusted minaudieres, tapped Dee as creative director. She brings a very of-the-moment spin to the glitzy handbags by memorializing everything from French fries to cell phones. “We’re lucky that we already have such a strong identity,” she says. “It’s a luxury brand that’s been around for over 50 years. We are always thinking, what haven’t we done, what is relevant to today?” Under her direction, Judith Leiber currently boasts attention-grabbing collaborations with icon Iris Apfel and pop artist Ashley Longshore. “We are constantly trying to push the envelope. Ultimately, I’d like to broaden the brand into other categories. I really think that Judith owns the evening purse space.” It would be easy to bask in the shadow of a famous fashion designer husband, Tommy Hilfiger, but Dee isn’t that kind of girl. With her newly announced partnership with Farfetch.com, she’s set to take her brand global, and her tenure at Judith Leiber continues to find the hands of the A-list. But even with such big career wins, her future seems much more dependent on family ties and good work. “My most important goal in life is to raise our children to become healthy, happy, independent, and kind human beings. I believe that would be my most important contribution and legacy. I would also love to help finally eradicate breast cancer.” The only thing standing in her way? The clock. “I find my biggest obstacle is time. I never seem to have enough of it.” G

I AM LOVING SIMONE ROCHE

Life’s door is gently opening through which the sun is shining, and it feels like a birth of a new day.

You start dying slowly if you do not travel, if you do not read, If you do not listen to the sounds of life, If you do not appreciate yourself. You start dying slowly When you kill your self-esteem; When you let others help you. You start dying slowly If you become a slave of your habits, Walking everyday on the same paths... If you do not change your routine, If you do not wear different colors Or you do not speak to those you don’t know. You start dying slowly If you avoid to feel passion And their turbulent emotions; Those which make your eyes glisten And your heart beat fast. You start dying slowly If you do not change your life when you are not satisfied with your job, or with your love, If you do not risk what is safe for the uncertain, If you do not go after your dream, If you do not allow yourself At least once in your lifetime, To run away from sensible advice... by Pablo Neruda

108 GENLUX SUMMER 2021

This week, I bought a whippet puppy. I found out that its breeding traces back to my Mother’s first whippet, so it was a sign that I had to have her. She is fast—like “a Killer Queen, dynamite with a laser beam.” Black with white paws, she matches perfectly with my wardrobe. She is called Gigi, and she’s increased my reason for exercise and my heartbeat. I am inspired by Alice in Wonderland, a whimsical musical at the Victoria and Albert Museum that takes us down a beautifully made rabbit hole. That same day, I fell in love with a trouser suit from Vivienne Westwood. Harem pants, a short jacket, and a corset attached to them. I had tea at Sketch and continued Alice’s theme by wearing outlandish colours. Yesterday, I went to see the Yayoi Kusama show. The balls of light created illusions that I was in a huge castle, yet the room was tiny. “Expand our lives!” Is the takeaway message. Our imagination can see and feel, and we are so lucky to enjoy these moments. I found a great staycation at Oakley Court near Windsor, from where I sailed downriver on a boat and spent the afternoon watching Etonians playing cricket and going to church. Last evening, it was a night at the opera seeing La Boheme. At last, creative people are out and about. I had dinner at The Tate, although after watching the dark but fascinating Netflix film Seaspiracy, I felt hesitant to eat the salmon. This season, I am loving Simone Roche—the voluminous skirts, shirts, ruffles, and clumpy boots. I’ve been dressing in black and white for so long; I wonder if I will ever change? I can barely imagine myself in colour. My friend Murray Lachland Young invited me to a poetry recital at the Townhall in Fulham. Young artists had decorated this mad Victorian building which is turning into a hotel. I’m grateful there’s never a dull moment in life. I desire to see far into the future and keep my door open wide. I’ve found my mantra in Pablo Neruda’s beautiful poem on dying, which is all about living, isn’t it? G

THIS SKINCARE! Joyce Bonelli, the renowned celebrity makeup artist, who has

created some of the most beautiful looks on some of the most famous faces in the world, understands that prepped skin helps produce seamless makeup looks. Joyce combines her decades of experience in beauty to offer an affordable luxury skincare collection and has just launched in the largest big-box retailer in the world—Walmart. As the GENLUX luxury editor, I know a thing or two about luxury skincare, and here I am telling you about a Walmart product? Yes! There is no person on the planet that I would trust more with my skin than Joyce Bonelli! So let’s get started. Four products make up the line. Le Masque ($25): A gorgeous glitter treatment masque that delivers mega-targeted ingredients to help make the skin’s contours feel firmer and look more defined after just one use. Step one in the regime that preps skin for layering products.

IN THE PINK! Fall never looked so bright as it does through the 2021 eyes of Vivienne Westwood! The whole collection is whimsically bomb! But this pair of velvet paper bag trousers is a dream come true!! I’ll love it when we can start wearing our fall pieces in summer, and nothing is cooler than this hot pink pair of pants topped with Vivienne’s ‘True Punk’ tee or even a hot pink bikini top. I ADORE the whole collection, but these beauties will be residing in my closet the minute I can get my hands on them. Please do not be surprised to see them all over my Insta this summer.... viviennewestwood.com

our precious lips and keeps them kissable soft! Sircuit Cosmeceuticals Mangilla, mangovanilla moisturinzing lip balm, $10, sircuitskin.com

Come Thru Flawless ($25): The makeup setting spray serves as steps two and five in the regime by delivering broad-spectrum SPF 15 sunscreen protection. Applied throughout the day on top of makeup without disruption, the fine mist dries down quickly to instantly set makeup, reduce shine and provide a matte finish and soft-focus effect. For the Gods ($25): Bonelli’s top-secret, agedefying serum has taken many years to perfect. It visibly diminishes redness and improves the overall skin texture for a goddess glow. This serum would be step number three. THE Facelift ($25): Bonelli’s serum provides an instant blurring effect. Skin smoothing concentrate improves the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles while visibly re-defining and lifting facial contours. Infused with Argan Oil, Vitamin E, and linoleic acids help moisturize, soften dry patches, and reduce acne. To know Joyce Bonelli is to know she has some of the most beautiful skin in the game. Not only is she gorgeous on the outside... the insides are just as beautiful. Congratulations, Joyce on the release of your new line!! As soon as I finish here, I am Googling directions to the nearest Walmart to grab all four products! walmart.com

GENLUX The Three Most Effective Skin Treatments

Get your skin back on track with my go-to in-office treatments that refresh the appearance of skin and reverse the signs of aging. My best recommendation to my clients, and you, dear Genlux readers, is to rotate all three treatments below to achieve the healthiest and beautiful skin. -Ninka B @ninkabskin

1.

MICRONEEDLING

Microneedling, aka collagen-inducing therapy, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenating procedure. When small structures of the epidermis and dermis are damaged, acne scars, fine lines, and loss of elasticity become more apparent. For the skin to have a smooth texture and youthful appearance, the growth of our skin’s collagen needs to be stimulated. The penlike tool with fine needles creates controlled micro-injuries, which encourages new healthy skin cells. Therefore minimizing imperfections and promoting youthful skin. Benefits of Microneedling: Treats and improves acne scarring, fine lines, deeper wrinkles, loose skin, texture irregularities, hyperpigmentation, and pore size.

3.

ment right before a big event to look your absolute best or to do regularly as part of your selfcare/anti-aging skin regimen.

This is one of my all-time favorite treatments! It resurfaces skin with little recovery time. You can see the improvement of skin with a single treatment—though it’s best to do a series of three. Any post-procedural swelling and redness disappear after a day or two. The treated area becomes rough, and it will gently flake away within five days. The result is radiant and youthful skin!

CLEAR + TREAT YOUR SKIN TO A FACIAL BRILLANT LASER HydraFacial is a perfect treat-

The HydraFacial process includes:

Seiso Skincare! Industry veteran Tracey O’Connor and Rohto Pharmaceuticals of Japan team up to create clean, sophisticated formulations that transform skin. Seiso immediately hydrates and delivers essential nutrition for a healthy and natural glow. Seiso Ceramide Moisture Milk, $95; Fuwafuwa Foaming Cleanser, $38; Pure Ceramide Concentrate, $155; Seiso Water Velvet Cream, $65, seisojbeauty.com

• Exfoliation of the skin. • Extraction of impurities. • Infusion of the skin with a multitude of customized serums. • Treating dehydration, boosting collagen, brightening pigmentation, or soothing rosacea. Instantly takes your complexion from dull to glowing! It’s safe and gentle on all skin types, including sensitive skin. Benefits of HydraFacial:

Improves dehydration, rosacea, fine lines, shrinks pores, and firms the skin.

Benefits of Clear + Brilliant:

Improves the appearance of mild or moderate wrinkles, skin discoloration, rough skin texture, scars, and enlarged pores.

These are three great in-office treatments that will visibly rejuvenate your skin. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact me on Instagram @ninkabskin. I’m here to bring out your best glowing skin!

MYTOP 5 FOR GREAT SUMMER SKIN—GINA MARÍ

Facials are back! Skincare services are reopening, so we are so thrilled to see you in the flesh! While in-person office visits are now available, I want to continue to educate you on some must-have treatments you can do at home. Here are five of my favorites.

1.

3.

Peel to Perfection

Slip into Summer Skin.

This at-home peel kit is seriously professionalgrade quality. The five-step peel system is straightforward to use and features active ingredients such as Lactic Acid, Vitamin C, and Hyaluronic acid. The results are a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improvement in uneven skin tone, and overall skin tightening and toning. The Sanitas AHA Resurfacing Peel Kit ($89).

2.

Here Comes the Sun.

Warm weather is here. Let’s get comfortable and confident with showing more of our skin—head to toe! Esker Beauty’s Body Plane tool ($45), combined with their Firming Body Oil ($40), will exfoli-

THE ESKER BEAUTY BODY PLANE IS CRAFTED FROM PREMIUM TEAK WOOD. THE STAINLESS STEEL EDGE IS PLATED WITH COLLOIDAL STERLING SILVER WHICH IS NATU RALLY ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIINFLAM MATORY. LEAVES SKIN SOOTHED AND BABY SOFT.

Don’t forget the sunscreen! Whether the sun is shining or it’s overcast, don’t forget to apply your SPF. I use IS Clinical’s Extreme Protect 30 ($78). The UVA/UVB broad-spectrum provides great protection while also including great antioxidant benefits.

ate and tone for an all-over and utterly indulgent experience. Use the Body Plane as directed in combination with the oil to assist with lymphatic drainage, reducing the appearance of cellulite, improved circulation, and increased exfoliation allows for deeper product penetration.

4.

Collagen Counts

Healthy skin comes from the inside out. What we put into our body is just as important as what we apply topically. I’ve seen great results by adding supplemental vitamin collagen to my daily routine, and I am loving Neocell’s Super Collagen-C

(7-oz, $16.95, neocell.com). As we age, our cellular turnover slows down, so collagen production also slows down. Neocell’s Super Collagen-C has been a total gamechanger for me.

5.

Hey, Mister!

A refreshing mist is essential for both hydration and blue light protection. This one is infused with minerals, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid to soothe stressed skin any time of day with the added bonus of shielding your skin from harmful rays. I use Goldfaden MD Mist RX (2oz, $48).

ONE SEED COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE

There are few silver linings when it comes to the pandemic. For me, it was pickleball and my garden. Hi, my name is Kelly Emberg. You might remember me from the 70s and 80s. Miraculously, I ended up on the covers of many fashion magazines, kind of by accident, but that is a long story. Years ago, GENLUX featured me in a fashion spread with a gardening twist. That’s where I met creative director Stephen Kamifuji who recently invited me to write about my 14 years of experience growing my own food. It’s become my mission to convince others to start growing, and I am honored to share my passion with you. In this first article, I’m planting a seed for those who haven’t grown anything yet, in hopes you too will get bit by the gardening bug.

By Kelly Emberg - The Model Gardener

Back when I started, I was a little ahead of my time. You couldn’t use the term organic or seasonal! In my quest, I pitched a garden show to the networks, but it fell flat. They told me that the advertisers wouldn’t recognize that organic and seasonal was a good thing, and they didn’t believe anyone would want to know where their food originated. Well, times have changed, thank the Lord! More and more people do care what is in their food and from where it comes. During the COVID-19 lock-down, home gardening blossomed all over the world. I’m ecstatic to witness this wonderful resurgence in my favorite passion!

Here’s a peek at my organic garden —14 years in the making!

GOOD BETTER FOR FOOD, GOOD OUR PLANET Gardening organically reduces HEALTH! the chemical runoff from pesGrowing organically definitely makes you appreciate the farmer that grows food for us responsibly. Why do you think gourmet chefs celebrate and support our local organic farmers? Growing organically assures that your food won’t be laden with harmful pesticides or weed killers that can cause cancer. Plus, organic food is more nutritious, full of antioxidants, and tastes better than its conventionally grown counterparts. Wait till you taste your first homegrown, vineripened tomato! Then you will understand what I’m saying.

store, the lengthy process from farm to table causes produce to lose its nutritional value and flavor. In the supply chain model, food must be transported from the farmer to a processing center, then to a regional distribution center, then to the local retailer or restaurant, and finally, to you. Shipments coordinate with thousands of other orders carried on the same trucks, freight cars, or planes. If you grow your own food, you’ll harvest when it’s fresh, ripe, and ready for the picking.

ticides and fertilizers, which causes nitrogen bloom in our oceans that is suffocating our marine life. If you compost, you’ll help reduce debris in landfills while building the nutrients in your soil. Applying compost and mulches also reduces topsoil erosion. Organic agriculture brings value to areas such as biodiversity, pollination, and soil quality. Every little bit helps.

CONNECT TO NATURE

Before I started growing, I hardly noticed the seasons. Of course, when leaves fell, I realized it was fall, and when the weather cooled, I knew winter was on its way. Understanding seasons and what that means for growing is a whole different thing! Even the moon can affect how your plants grow. You’ll begin to notice and appreciate that Mother Nature has a plan for your garden. While you garden, watch the birds take dust baths as the sun sets; marvel at tiny hummingbirds dancing in and out of the spray as you hose off your tomato plants; fearlessly wade through industrious bees scavenging in your herb garden, legs full of pollen. You will learn to despise snails and want to annihilate every last one of them, babies and all. Do not listen to your young children begging to save them! Those little creatures can lay up to 100 eggs almost every month. They are capable of self-fertilization as well—you do the math! You will witness grubs metamorphose into beetles, making great snacks for birds, but watch out; most beetles like to eat your plants! Nurture those beneficial earthworms, and encourage them to stay in your garden! You will feel more connected with the seasons and nature if you grow your own food, I promise you!

LOCATION, LOCATION!

Southern California is THE BEST place to grow food yearround. No matter how much space you have, you can produce something to eat. Some vegetables, fruits, and herbs don’t take up that much room, and others will need ample space. You can grow to fit the limits of your garden or balcony. In my articles, you will learn what it takes to grow, nourish, and protect your plants. Remember, there will always be successes and failures!

Celebrate those successes and learn from your mistakes. That’s how I did it! In the beginning, you might work hard, but every season you will become increasingly proficient and fall more in love with your productive garden. Well, I hope you are convinced to start growing! We are at the end of summer, and it is time to start planting those cool-season plants. Hopefully, one seed will change your life! It did for me!

GETAWAY CABO

GENLUX

Classroom in Cabo

Our 2021 mother-son getaway includes the fortunate circumstance of attending high school remotely from 1,124 miles away. —Cecilia Moreno Our mother-son getaway started with a baseball cap and four folded-up pieces of paper—each with a destination scrawled in Sharpie. There was Cabo, Maui, Alaska, and Cancun. Sean dipped into the cap and pulled out the winner—CABO! Now to find a luxury resort with all the amenities and activities— including strong wifi, so Sean could attend all of his high school classes remotely. The Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas (grandsolmarranchosanlucas.solmar.com) checked all the boxes, including being safe—it sits within a gated community.

MUST STAY:

Our getaway began with this simply awesome welcome message made with grains of sand. The Grand Solmar at Rancho San Lucas is a purely luxury experience, full of these extra-special warm touches. The resort sits in Rancho San Lucas, an exclusive 834-acre resort community set in rolling desert foothills with 1.2 miles of pristine beach-front on the Pacific. Only 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, a deep-sea fishing, golf and nightlife capital, this quiet enclave offers a relaxing and serene vacation.

MUST PLAY:

We biked, we hiked, we paddleboarded, we golfed, we swam, we ate...and we ate! This was an activity filled vacation—morning to night. Next time we come, we’ll go snorkeling and whale watching. Above: That’s our guide, Itzel Ramírez, on the left, Sean, Me, and Rodrigo Gutiérrez, the resort’s General Manager.

MUST DINE:

Photos: Luxury World Traveler

Pack your appetite because the resort offers good food galore. Tacos on the golf course, nachos and cerviche by the pool, smoothies at the spa. A standout is Anica, the resort’s fine dining establishment. Go for the organic cornish hen with pumpkin seed red pipian, corn kernels, dry fruit and wild rice at this truly enchanting dining spot.

MUST SIP:

MUST GOLF:

Sandwiched between the sand dunes, the resort offers a challenging beachfront course designed by Greg Norman, winner of 20 PGA tournaments and two majors. The 7,210-yard layout blends seamlessly with Cabo’s terrain. Beware: The sand does kick up with the strong winds, so bring some protective eyewear.

MUST SPA:

Located steps from the beach, the outdoor spa cabanas provide picturesque tranquility as the sound of the waves lull you into a hypnotic, relaxing state. Treat yourself to a customized massage (ask for the heavenly hands of Alecia).

MUST CHILL:

Savor the moments spent in your private cabana overlooking the saltwater lagoon pool while munching on tapas and sipping on a piña colada. Enjoy! This might be the only thing on your afternoon schedule today.
