STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Documentaries, aside from coffee table books, are my drug. For me, they can’t make them fast enough—especially in the fashion and design categories. Thus, as the rains begin to pour in LA—meaning it’s time to spend more time indoors—let’s Postmates some sushi and binge-watch seven of fashion’s finest documentaries. 1. Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s McQueen (2018) is about the rollercoaster life of Alexander McQueen. It is a beautifully edited documentary that covers the designer’s life from his early school days to his rise to the top of the fashion chain up until his tragic suicide. The film reveals his obsessions, his demons, and his extraordinary relationship with fashion stylist Isabella Blow. 2. Like finely polished silverware, R. J. Cutler’s The September Issue (2007) is shiny and flawless and reflects on the lives of those building fashion’s bible, Vogue, and its brilliant leader, Anna Wintour. 3. Nobody’s life in fashion was as fabulous as Diana Vreeland’s, and this documentary is, too: Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel (2011) by filmmakers Lisa Immordino Vreeland and Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt. It is a brilliantly constructed representation of Vreeland’s editorship at Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and her larger-than-life persona. Side note: Our friend and hairstylist Robert Steinken can quote every line of DV. 4. Valentino: The Last Emperor, Emperor (2008). If living vicariously through the opulent life of others brings you happiness, then hop onboard this joy ride. Director Matt Tyrnauer, who was given carte blanche access into Valentino’s life, peels back the velvet curtain to reveal how it’s good to be Valentino. You know, things like making sure the dogs have their seats on the private jet and other normal activities. 5. Mix one part humility, two parts kindness, and three parts love of the job, and you have Bill Cunningham New York (2011). Director Richard Press captures the essence of the man who photographed and edited street fashion as a reporter for T he Ne w York Times from 1978 to 2016. So ethical was this man, Cunningham, that he would even refuse food or drink at events so as not to influence his reporting. 6. Take a genius title like Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s (2013) and you have the basis for a sweeping documentary by director Matthew Miele into one of America’s most influential fashion retailers. And now, with the death of Henri Bendel—may she rest in peace—Bergdorf has an even greater torch to carry. 7. Most everyone’s favorite shoe designer, Manolo Blahnik, is the subject of journalist-slash-director Michael Roberts, who brings us into the meticulous cobbler’s life. Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards (2017) is the fascinating documentary of Blahnik, whose pricey shoes are coveted by celebs, stylists, and fashion slaves. Featured players include Anna Wintour, Naomi Campbell, Iman, Karlie Kloss, Paloma Picasso, Rihanna, André Leon Tally, and more.

Some people are born to be stars—and with a name like Carly Craig, what option was there. The San Diego-native, 30-something actress, and step-sister of Mandy Moore, has been on the acting scene since 2005. She appeared as a young Fraida Felcher in Dumb and Dumber To, and starred as a flight attendant in the Adult Swim series Infomercials. This year, she stepped up her game to co-create and star in Sideswiped, a comedy TV series. The Gemini beauty answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire. Your breakfast? I had eggs, a gluten-free bagel, and some fruit. First job? I was a cashier at Dixieline Lumber store. Role model? My mom. I loved how strong and independent she was. I always felt like she could do anything. And I strived to be the same way. Three blessings? My fiancé, Zach, my dogs, and getting to do what I love for a living. Your passion? I love writing and acting — also, anything to do with animals. Charity work? I love Baby2Baby. It’s an amazing organization that provides low-income children with diapers, clothing, and basic necessities. I also give to The Alexis Project and the Animal Welfare Institute. Biggest risk? Moving to Los Angeles with my friend, Riva, right out of high school. Early dues? I worked as a waitress, a nanny, an assistant, and many free jobs in acting and writing.
I didn’t get my first paying acting job for nine years. Communication change? Sometimes my point has already been made, and I just keep going. DNA change? My crooked bottom tooth, but I probably never will. :) Dream role? To star opposite Meryl Streep. Best trait? My friends would probably say I’ll be there for anyone at a moment’s notice. Biggest fear? Telling people my biggest fear, and they use it against me. ;) Best feature? My eyes. First heartbreak? My high school boyfriend. He was a little older, and we broke up when he went to college. Spirit animal? My dog Molly. She’s not afraid of anything, except the vacuum cleaner. What’s next? Hopefully a season 2 of Sideswiped, and getting married and starting a family. Should I have put the getting married part first?

Hey, Carly Craig! Please rate yourself on a scale of 1-10. Competitive: 9. I grew up with two brothers and a sister. Game night was very loud. Romantic: 9. I love romance. The little things are the best. I leave notes for my fiancé, Zach, to find when I leave sometimes. He’s really good at texting. Always sending me sweet texts in the middle of the day while we’re working. And I always smile when I go to brush my teeth at night and he’s filled up the water for me in the Waterpik. Sensitive: 6. I’m not usually too sensitive ... unless I’m PMSing. Affectionate: 10. I’ve been told I’m an over-hugger. : ) Driven: 10. When I have a goal, I stop at nothing to achieve it. Fashionable: 7. I try, but I wouldn’t say that’s my biggest strength. Forgiving: 9. If someone is honest and sorry, it’s hard for me not to forgive. Temperamental: 3. Takes a lot to get me mad...unless I’m PMSing. Critical: 6. I can be a little hard on myself sometimes, but I think I’m getting better at that. Afffair dress, @afffair.fff

Hawaiian-born Tia Carrere is mastering Hollywood. She‛s checked off most of the boxes: Starred in an iconic role (Wayne’s World); Recipient of a Grammy award (well, actually, it’s two, but who’s counting); and now, she’s starring in a Netflix comedy series—AJ and the Queen. We caught up with Tia to chime in on our Genlux Take-Two Interview.

First job? Modeling for Japanese companies. Role model? I suppose that would be my maternal grandmother who raised me during my teen years. Three blessings? Health, family, and financial security. Your passion? Raising my brave, bold teenage girl, and contributing to the world creatively and philanthropically through volunteering. Charity work? Mostly our public school system for the past number of years, and Girl Scouts, where I was a troop leader for a few years. I also support Food On Foot and public radio stations KCRW and KPFK, and the Children’s Health Defense with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Biggest risk? Staying in LA when a boyfriend had stolen all my money and left me homeless. I moved into the hallway of my modeling agent’s home and worked hard to bring myself up again.

ROBIN’S NEST
Last month, Robin McGraw, Dr. Phil’s better half, led us on a fashionable tour of the couple’s sprawling 15,000-square-foot estate, though, as SUSAN CAMPOS discovers, this larger-than-life entrepreneur, television personality, New York Times best-selling author and philanthropist is really a small town girl at heart.

30 GENLUX WINTER 2019
O
n any given evening, you’ll likely find Robin McGraw in her Beverly Hills home, cuddled next to hubby Dr. Phil McGraw, binge-watching a new TV show and ordering in from one of their favorite restaurants. “We are both homebodies,” she explains in her disarming Texan accent. “We love to stay at home, so a date night for us means to stay at home together.” While millions of television viewers see her on the Dr. Phil show clad in Dior or Alexander McQueen, she prefers snuggling in a pair of black sweatpants, a soft V-neck sweater, and a pair of Fendi flats. “If I’m home and I’m not in sweatpants,” she shares, “then I’ll wear a t-shirt and throw this one soft cotton dress by Reformation over it, and I’ll slip into a pair of comfortable Uggs or my husband’s cozy tennis socks.” But after 42-years of marriage, Robin and Dr. Phil McGraw share much more than just socks. The loving couple have two successful sons (one a musician and one a television producer) and two grandchildren and embrace the simple pleasures—like a competitive arcade game. “We have a pinball machine at home, and we’ll go out there at night,” explains Robin with a grin. “When I want to win, I just start playing topless. We’re both competitive, and I have to win at least one game!” Their 15,000-square-foot Beverly Hills home has well-manicured grounds, a tranquil koi pond, tennis court, and sweeping Southern California views. Known for her impeccable taste, Robin is involved in every square inch of the interior design. A well-curated art collection hangs on the walls. There’s a Steinway baby grand piano in the living room, and candles encased in hurricane holders are everywhere. “I love decorating,” she says, “I’m very into tradition.” In the McGraw household, holidays are embraced with a vengeance. It is a classic Christmas extravaganza, and she would never dream of outsourcing any part it. Robin stays up into the wee hours of the morning, putting up decorations, and each year, she picks a different theme — right down to the handpicked tree ornaments. As with everything she does, Robin gives 100% and does it effortlessly. Robin Jo Jameson rose from humble beginnings in Texas to marry a man who would become, according to Forbes, the 15th highest earning celebrity in the world. In the process, she became a self-made success through hard work and dedication to both her family and career. Three days a week, she tapes the Dr. Phil show, and rather than indulge in a glam squad, she does it all herself. “I pop up at 5:55 in the morning and get in the shower. I do my own hair, makeup, and wardrobe.” On the Dr. Phil show, she chimes in on everything from parenting to decorating to marriage. Her husband is her biggest fan. “The camera does not love me,” Dr. Phil says. “It is absolutely in love with her, so every chance I get, I get her in the camera frame, and then I raise my game ... a lot.”
We’ve all come to know the show’s signature ending. As the theme music cues, Dr. Phil walks toward the audience and over toRobin (who is always dressed flawlessly), takes her hand, and the pair strolls offstage together. On one occasion, they rode off on Dr. Phil’s Harley Davidson motorcycle; on another, the couple daringly two-wheeled it off-stage on scooters. In every case, the audience eats it up. These days, Robin, the TV personality, wife, mother, grandmother, New York Times best-selling author, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, can’t wait to launch her latest skincare products. The products have cute names that ring true in normal Los Angeles conversations, such as “She’s Looking Great Lately,” “What’s Going On,” and “What Has She Done? I Must Do It!” However, these days, it’s her passion to give back that truly fills her soul. Robin is part of a new tireless crop of philanthropists dedicated to changing the world by improving the lives of others—especially women and children. In 2013, Robin launched When Georgia Smiled, an organization designed to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. It comes with a potentially life-saving app (that looks like a typical news application) that allows victims of abuse to call for help, inconspicuously, at the touch of a button. Robin named the foundation after her mother, Georgia, and the smile that would make the family feel safe and secure despite the tremendous stress. While her mother did not endure any physical violence, her father was an alcoholic. “It caused me to live a life of uncertainty,” explains Robin of her childhood. “I knew the one thing that was certain in my life was my mother’s smile. I wanted to create a foundation so that I could bring others a way to find that same sense of peace and that same sense of joy.” Giving back is always top of mind; she’s a founding board member of The Dr. Phil Foundation, a spokesperson for the American Red Cross and the Girl Scouts, and was named a national spokesperson for C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children). “Robin’s always looking at what she can do next to make this world a better place,” Dr. Phil says. “She doesn’t go into it asking what the world has to offer to her. She always goes into it asking, ‘What can I offer to the world?’ She’s always looking for a bigger platform to play on so she can make a bigger difference, and that’s why we don’t ever get bored because she’s always looking for something else she can do.” Together, they reach out to millions through television and philanthropy. Robin is grateful for the life they’ve created together and values their low-key time at home. Dr. Phil still cherishes the woman he met more than 40 years ago in Texas and appreciates that those humble beginning are still there. “The minute I met Robin, she was very proud of her small town roots,” he recalls. “It’s not like she thinks, ‘Oh, I’m bigger than small-town.’ She just wears small town with such dignity that it’s astounding.”

CHANEL FALL-WINTER 2018/19 HAUTE COUTURE
I am writing from Capri, the beautiful Island off Naples, from the exclusive Capri Hollywood Film Festival—the brainchild of Pascal Vicedomini— which is hosting Fashionable Icons in Film this year. Actress Greta Scacchi, who once helped Cod overfishing with her nude photographs taken by Rankin, won the art prize. This year, the masterpiece ROMA is on everyone’s best list. Also of note: Nick Nolte, Jonathan Pryce, and, Joely Richardson for her role in The Aspern Papers.
CHANEL FALL-WINTER 2018/19 HAUTE COUTURE
Turning to fashion, I love Moschino where creative director Jeremy Scott’s wicked sense of humour comes through in his creations. Take his handbag with handcuff handles. I loved being stopped in customs and asked if they could remove them from the bag. I also fell in love with his upside-down tails, bras on teeshirts, long fishtail suits in pinstripes, and his scribble-print fabrics. Scott has a hint of Gaultier about him which amuses me. If nothing else, I can’t wait to wear his eccentric tights.
MOSCHINO
Listen, not everyone can hit a homerun every time at bat, and King Karl is no different. CHANEL’s FW18-19 Couture collection was hit or miss. While the detailing in the necklines, fabrics, and colours was exceptionally divine—as were nearly all of the tops—it’s the handling of many of the skirts that moved off the mark. The stiff, mid-length front panels of the skirts—slit fully on both sides—did not move well. They bunched-up as the models walked, causing unwelcome breaks. Oh, well, nobody’s perfect— not even Karl Lagerfeld.
CHANEL FALL-WINTER 2018/19 HAUTE COUTURE
On another note, I applaud Vivienne Westwood who is encouraging us to buy responsibly by purchasing fewer clothes, but of better quality. My next stop: America and The Oscars.

SUNDANCING
With the Sundance Film Festival coming up, I wanted to shout out one of my favorite places in Deer Valley (just up the road from Park City, Utah) and a place I have spent some quality time—especially after a cold day on the slopes. The Veuve Clicquot Après-Ski Lounge is a gorgeously decorated yurt just outside the slope-side door of The Montage Deer Valley. With a seriously Ralph Lauren decor, a warm pot-belly stove, and enough blankets to keep you warm until spring, this is the ultimate see-and-be-seen, warm, cozy and oh-so-bubbly spot. If you really want to take that relaxation a step further, hit the 35,000-square-foot Spa Montage Deer Valley Spa. With some of the best classes and treatments, I have ever indulged. Take a moment to breathe during Sundance and head up the hill to pure bliss! montagehotels.com
CARTIER SNAKE CHARMER
I was at a gala in Los Angeles on January 5th 2019, when I spied this beautifully articulated piece of brilliant art draped around the neck of a stunningly beautiful woman. This timeless collaboration between Cartier and Maria Felix took two years to achieve with 2,473 brilliant- and baguette-cut diamonds and red, green and black enamel set in platinum. Dramatic, supple and flexible, the Cartier Snake necklace can only be worn by a woman with a mixture of strength and sensuality... a true warrior. 370 North Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, ask for Cartier Prestige Advisor Timothy Morzenti, 310-275-4272 A year ago I was at a Louis Vuitton fashion event and saw what could have been the most absolutely perfect marriage: A Louis Vuitton chest filled with a gorgeous floral arrangement... brilliance! I asked to purchase one, and they said it was a display and not for sale. Flash forward to January 2019 when I find out they indeed have started to make this incredible floral chest. Call it a twofer as it has a removable, water-tight metal box that fits snuggly inside to hold flowers, or remove the metal box and use the chest for jewels or watches. Louis Vuttion you have made my floral dreams come true. Louis Vuitton floral chest, $6795, Louis Vuitton, Beverly Hills, I never, ever, write about ask for Louis Vuitton Specialist something unless I have not Anthony David, louisvuitton.com only tried it, but tried it for some length of time. But this one has gotten so much press, and then, when world-famous makeup artist Joyce Bonelli told me that I had to try it... well here it is in print. When Joyce talks ... I listen! The newest photographic book to hit our coffee table is another 200-plus-page gem from luxury book publisher Rizzoli. Cathleen Naundorf, granted access to the hallowed CHANEL haute couture archives, provides us with a stunning series of fashion images. The models, set in iconic Paris locations synonymous with Chanel, like 31 Rue Cambon and the Grand Palais, were photographed using a large-format camera and Polaroid medium, which Naundorf used to compose her painterly and dreamy images. The models are shaped in 50s-style poses and attitudes inspired by famed photographer Horst P. Horst, with whom Naundorf had a friendship. Equally compelling are the book’s diary pages that offer a glimpse into Naundorf ’s daily planning and inspiration. Like painters’ studies, these mood boards allow us to dive deeper into the thought process of the brilliant photographer’s mind. It’s likely Coco, herself, would approve this book. FABULA!
French sculptor and furniture designer Hubert Le Gall’s work might best be described as whimsical alleghory. The new monograph on the man, Hubert Le Gall: Fabula, highlights the genius that brings a smile and a smirk to our face. —SK
It’s challenging to pin down the aesthetic of contemporary French sculptor and furniture designer Hubert Le Gall. It oscillates between the whimsical genius of a Walt Disney and the bold abstractions of a Henry Moore; between essences of Art Nouveau and dashes of Andy Warhol. All told, the sum of their parts creates a tongue-in-cheek symphony of delight. The enchanting new monograph, Hubert Le Gall: Fabula, celebrates his playful spirit and takes us on a joyous exploration of his works through the lens of his most ardent patron, LA-based collector, Pamela Mullin. Take, for example, the masterpiece over the fireplace that she commissioned for her salon at Saint-Calais where, “The mere mention of her overmantel is enough to make Pamela Mullin’s eyes light up, and for her to say in a blissful tone, “Magic!”
