Both my step-parents really showed up for me and became heroes when alcohol and drugs found their way into the lives of my primary family. Childhood crush? Johnny Depp Career path? Fashionable: 4, cozy is my go-to, but the times I’m lucky enough to have someone else dress me for an event, I always enjoy. Emotional: 7, being that I’m naturally very sensitive, the emotions do need to have an expression at that. Forgiving: 8, not always perfect at this, but do continually strive for it.
Embarrassing moment? Falling down the stairs because I took a FaceTime call as I walked out my door.
Nurturing: 10, always feels good to make someone else feel loved and cherished.

Favorite quote? “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” —Oscar Wilde
Happiest moment? I have a feeling this is yet to come...
Critical: 5, the areas I’m most critical are of myself. Generous: 7, to give to another always feels good. Honest: 9, sometimes to a fault.

IS LAURA PIERI THE NEXT J.LO?
Brazilian beauty Laura Pieri has her mind set on using her music to help heal and inspire others, and, according to Cory Rooney, Jennifer Lopez’s producer, there’s no limit as to what this girl is about to do.

Keeping up with singer Laura Pieri is like chasing the wind. Her days begin with a workout at the crack of dawn, frequently ending with studio lights blazing into the wee hours of the morning. “We work until we hit gold,” Laura shares. “I go home around midnight or 1, sometimes later, and then it starts all over again.” Under the guidance of uber-producer Cory Rooney, the man who helped shape the careers of Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Marc Anthony, and Michael Jackson, When Laura was 16, and her brother, 14, her Laura’s musical career is on the right track. parents got divorced. “When you love two people dearly, and they don’t get along, it hurts,” Five years ago, the two met through someone she says. “In the fight between the sea and the who knew somebody, and the pair have worked rock, those that suffer are the shells. She can However, Laura did not always have so much confidence. Her path to music came through personal pain. “I was weird, chubby, wore glasses, and was non-conforming,” she says. “Sixth and seventh grades were bad for me. I used to cry and not want to go to school. No one here wants to be my friend. No one wants to talk to me. I truly felt like everybody hated me, so I ate lunch alone in the bathroom. I’m still dealing with that, and I have feelings of inadequacy.” She found solace in music. “I listened to Taylor Swift, and Michael Jackson’s music really helped me through that time. I fell in love with his music, like “Keep the Faith” and “They Don’t Care About Us.” That’s when I said I wanted to share my experience through my music, where, if I can make one person feel less alone and happier, then I’m happy and satisfied. I want to comfort the uncomfortable—and make the comfortable, uncomfortable.”

Only five years ago, she came to the US to attend an American International Baccalaureate school. The girl has no accent, not a trace. “I lucked out because music is my primary passion,” she explains, “So phonetics really mattered to me. I learned English by really listening. When I’m around people, I quickly adopt the way they speak.”
Right now, Laura, a Gemini, is focused on her full-time studies at NYU’s Gallatin School while also finishing up her album produced by Cory for Kobalt Music. “I have no vacation days and don’t sleep, but I’m happy,” Laura says. “There’s a lot of pressure to do well because Cory’s a legendary artist. He’s crazy talented. To have him bet on our project is a little insane. In five years, I hope to have my own tour. I want to represent the Brazilian culture and make a mark for Brazil. Mission accomplished. I’m already off-script. The script was moving to America—that was my dream. Now that I’ve gotten here, the movie doesn’t end. There’s more after you cross the border.” “When talented singers like Laura Pieri walk the talk, you’d better believe that success is on the way,” Cory says confidently, “there’s no limit as to what this girl is about to do.”

WINTER 2020 GENLUX 45
Your roots? I grew up in San Rafael, a city in Marin County. I had the understanding that Dad was famous at an early age. As kids, we’d go to his concerts and run around backstage. A lot of the band members had kids the same age. So we’d go to Toys R Us before a show and get puzzles and coloring books and play in the kid’s room. I remember I didn’t like being in the audience because weird hippies were doing weird dances, and they’d smell funny. Astrological sign? Capricorn, January 6. Any tattoos? On my right hand, a small arrow points in, and on my left hand, an arrow points out. They symbolize the flow of energy. On my neck and chest is a sacred geometry lotus, and on my left arm is the woman from my Dad’s Abraxas album but without the congas. I also have tattoos of flowers. I have a cross on the back of my leg. Love life? I just got married, but we haven’t had a wedding yet. My husband is Paul Carrigan, and he’s from Scotland. We’ve known each other since 2015. Wedding plans? We’re quasi starting to plan our wedding celebration. I’m just so non-traditional. When I think about our wedding, I feel like I’m going to bust out laughing. I’ve never pictured myself having a wedding—not that I didn’t want to. Some girls dream about their wedding their whole life—that was never me.
Name change? No. I’m keeping my name forever. If we have kids, it might be combined. We also joke about combining our names like Santarrigan or Carritan. I just didn’t understand why I have to have someone else’s name when I got married—so I kept my name. Holiday plans? Paul and I went Kauai to visit my dad. We’ve been listening to the Charlie Brown Christmas album and a little Jimi Hendrix because Dad’s been the DJ. Your sound? My music is laid-back and soulful, though I’m also throwing in some Bob Marleyesque reggae into the mix. My new project will release in early 2020. I have about eight songs done so far. I write and co-produce all of my lyrics and music. Book pick? The War of Art. It’s a great book, and it’s a fast read. It talks about resistance. It’s like when you have something to do, but you find a hundred other things to do instead. Why we have these blocks? Rumi said, “Don’t seek love but seek all the barriers in yourself that you’ve built up against it.” Natural disposition? I’m always happy. I’m realistic vs. optimistic. By seeing things as they are, I get a better idea of the trajectory of things and can see them without having an emotional attachment. Then I can decide if I want to participate or not. And that’s empowering. Any pets? I love dogs. I have a Chihuahua. She’s 14 and travels with me. I thought she was a boy, so I named her Baxter. In my defense, the breeder told me she was a boy, but when I took her to the vet, they said what? No, she’s a girl.
Wedding dress? Even saying the words, wedding dress, applying to me feels like a show. I’m on Pinterest for five minutes before I want to kill myself. I’m like no, no, no, no. When I was in fourth grade, I said I’m going to get married in jeans and a t-shirt.
Charity work? After I graduated from Pepperdine University, I moved home for one year and worked for Artists for a New South Africa. They have many orphans because of the AIDS rate, so they funded an orphanage. I worked there for nine months.
Want kids? Children are cool, though I’m not quite ready for that. I’m 34, but I’ve never been like I want to get married and have children. I’ve always been very independent.
Spirit animal? A wolf or husky, because they’re loners, but they’ll also go in packs when necessary. I like to be alone. I like myself, so I don’t mind being by myself.

You’re wearing? A blue and black Dickies flannel shirt, Gallery Department jeans, and a pair of black YSL boots. Under my shirt, I have on a Balenciaga scuba shirt.
Jealous streak? No, I’m not a jealous person, but I’m also direct and will say something if I feel something is not appropriate. I don’t really care about past friendships as long as everyone is on the same page, and there’s respect. I do want to make sure nothing stupid is going on, so I don’t have to murder anyone because I’m too busy and can’t add murder onto my schedule.

Stella Santana making music? Too cliché, she thought to herself. After all, with a guitar legend like Carlos Santana for a dad, following his footsteps would appear too obvious. LIZ HURLEY CONQUERS THE WORLD
The forever-young Elizabeth Hurley, 54, is now in her 25th year as an Estée Lauder spokesmodel, has her eponymous swimwear collection, and stars as Morgan le Fay, the bad-ass sorceress who fancies ruling the universe.

WINTER 2020 GENLUX 65
When one door closes, another opens... So, when Elizabeth Hurley’s four-season stint as the Queen on E! Channel’s The Royals slammed shut, in no time, another role emerged. Enter Marvel’s Morgan le Fay, the latin-speaking, immortal, bad-ass temptress who wants to take over the world in Hulu’s The Runaways. The most challenging part as the greatest sorceress of all time? “Squeezing myself into Morgan’s catsuit every day,” admits Elizabeth. Elizabeth, the doting mother of her 17-year-old, model son, Damian, answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire. Your GPS? I am at my house in the country in Herefordshire, England. I love being here when surrounded by family and friends for the holidays. I love a house full to the brim with naughty people. You’re wearing? I’m wearing black velvet jeans by J Brand, a grey, fur- trimmed cashmere sweater by Pop Ski and a thick cashmere scarf by Heidi Wynn. How’s Damian? My son is a typical teen but, luckily, very loving and relatively civilized. I call him my blessing. He has his big exams coming up in the summer, and then, he’s taking a gap year. Describe yourself? Hmm... in five words, I’m energetic, determined, hard-working, irritable and irritating. Three blessings? My son, my family, my friends. Current passion? Decorating my house. I’m driving everyone demented by torturing them with paint colors and fabric samples. I’m not particularly good at it and agonize over every decision. Guilty pleasure? I can’t walk past a jar of peanut butter without sticking my finger in it. Childhood heroes? Marilyn Monroe and Muhammed Ali. Childhood crush? David Soul in Starsky & Hutch, and Jimmy Osmond. Biggest heartbreak? Losing my father twenty-three years ago was the worst time. He died whilst staying with me
66 GENLUX WINTER 2020
in Paris, and it was very traumatic. Happiest moment? Watching my son grow up into such an amazing human being brings me joy on a daily basis. Beauty secret? Plenty of sleep, fresh air and moisturiser. Everyday style? I wear jeans-denim, leather or velvet pretty much every day with a T-shirt and/or cashmere sweater. Youthful figure? Why, thank you! I don’t really do any exercise, but I’m extremely active and am not very good at sitting still. I’m fairly disciplined when it comes to food. The minute my jeans feel tight; I eat a bit less. I try to make sure that half my plate is always of vegetable matter and very rarely eat between meals. That said, I just ate an entire box of Quality Streets, my favourite chocolates, which every household in England stockpiles at Christmas. Best trait? My friends would probably say my loyalty. I’m a very good friend when times are tough. But I learned from the best— my friends have been amazing to me in my times of need. Best feature? Oh gosh, I’ve never really thought about it, and even though I’ve had one of the longest-running beauty contracts in history with Estée Lauder (I’m in my 25th year) I’m not remotely vain. DNA change? I have always wanted thicker, wavy hair. My hair is fine and dead straight.
Biggest regret? I deeply regret that my father never met my son. He would have loved him. You’re reading? I’m a book-aholic and read at least a couple of books a week. I’ll read anything, but, when I’m traveling, I’ll read mostly grisly thrillers. Right now, I’m re-reading all the Flashman novels by George MacDonald Fraser. I love them and re-read them all the time. Latest getaway? Since my first visit to the Maldives nearly twenty years ago, I’ve never really wanted to go anywhere else. It’s just
heaven on earth. Tranquil azure waters, white sands, superb service, privacy, and perfect food. Fantasy dinner? I’d have Marlon Brando, Vladimir Nabokov, Lord Byron, Marilyn Monroe, and Mae West. Favorite words? Amor vincit omnia. Stupid tricks? I can do the rap in I want to be a Billionaire. 5-year plan? I’ll be right here in the countryside, playing with my power tools in the garden.

Hello, 2020! I am back home in London, where I shall spend Christmas with the Fortes who own Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair —a creative toybox of glamour. Lady Forte is a friend whose family is so ravishingly good-looking and well dressed. I am a lucky girl having so many fabulous and eclectic friends.
BROWN’S HOTEL SUITE, LONDON
Life has been full of drama ever since Prince Andrew hit the papers tied to the Epstein scandal. It’s changed the landscape of the Royal Family and is the talk of England. Whether or not Prince Andrew is complicit, the bottom line is something must be done to protect young girls worldwide, and my heart goes out to the victims. The best house and garden in England has been built by the very elegant Lady Rothermere, who has created a fairytale land in Shaftesbury. A delight to stay in with everything picture-perfect. Perfect children, perfect style, perfect horses and dogs, that make everything look dreamy.

So now, I will take charge of my finances—I think it is that time of life. My mindset is still that of a 12-yearold, but actually, I am going to be ... oh, let’s talk about something else, like ...

THE GABRIELLE
I wrote about The Gabrielle velvet-trimmed sequined chiffon mini wrap dress by Retrofete on my site, lauradunn.com, several months ago—knowing that this dress would be a strong choice for resort wear! I just bought my 6th Gabrielle, and it’s still going strong into spring as the colors just keep coming! What I adore about this easy-to-wear dress is its versatility. It can be dressed up for a fabulous cocktail event … or seriously dressed down for a daytime adventure. Not wearing sequins during the day is a thing of the past. It is no longer a rule breaker. I bought my first one at Intermix and wore it that night to an event. The Gabrielle paired perfectly with thigh-high boots. I plan on wearing this fun lil dress year ‘round! Gabrielle by Retrofete, $635, netaporter.com
VERY RALPH
To know me is to know that I am a documentary fiend and I simply cannot get enough! So when Very Ralph debuted a couple of weeks ago I was so excited ... but .... little did I know just how excited I would be! Very Ralph, the first documentary portrait of fashion icon Ralph Lauren, reveals the man behind the icon and the creation of one of the most successful brands in fashion history. Very Ralph is directed and produced by award-winning documentarian Susan Lacy. Never before have I been more fashion-inspired and at 1 am I was playing in my closet going through all my old Ralph Lauren designs. I came up with several new house design ideas and spent the rest of my week dreaming of the Hamptons! With an uncanny ability to turn his dreams into reality, Ralph Lauren has built a multi-billion-dollar, global powerhouse out of his aspirations, becoming a living embodiment of American optimism and the American Dream. For more than 50 years, he has celebrated the iconography of America and defined American

style, translating his vision and inspiration into one of the world’s most widely recognized brands. In Very Ralph, as he enters his sixth decade in business, Lauren reflects on his journey from a boy from the Bronx who didn’t know what a fashion designer was, to becoming the emblem of American style all around the world. Offering unprecedented access to his life and work, Ralph Lauren speaks candidly in extensive interviews about his childhood, his five-decade-long marriage, the early days of his company, his response to criticism, his inventive multi-page ad campaigns and his pioneering vision which includes a remarkable series of firsts: Lauren was the first designer to create and market a complete lifestyle brand and expand into home furnishings, one of the first to champion diversity on the runway and in advertising and the first to create immersive retail environments that transformed the shopping experience. TOM FORD

It’s deep, and woodsy notes have just the right amount of exotic, yet it exudes fresh notes that work well—even on LA’s hottest days. Tom Ford Beauty Oud Wood Collection, $240, shop.nordstrom.com
MLB PERFORMANCE WOVEN
I created my new woven performance collection inspired by my travels around the world. They’re designed with an ethnic, timeless feel. The collection includes South-Seas inspired Kabba Kabba, Moroccaninspired Mamounia Petite, and Japanese-inspired Shibori patterns. Martyn Lawrence Bullard woven collection, martynlawrencebullard.com
RIMOWA
And now, for my longer traveling needs, the new Rimowa suitcase is a musthave, with its long shape that allows clothes to lay out in a much more useful way. Rimowa Classic Trunk, $1340, rimowa.com
I’ve always loved jewelry and especially pieces inspired by antiques, so I created a collection of signet rings studded in reclaimed vintage diamonds—the Valmonte pinky ring being my current favorite. Available at Roseark in WeHo and online. Martin Lawrence Bullard ‘Valmonte’ Pave Diamond Signet Ring, $7900, 1stdibs.com

GENLUX SKIN VS WINTER —NINKA B. During winter, our skin faces a lot of environmental factors, such as low humidity, cold weather, and heated homes, which can leave our skin dry and irritated. Follow my seven simple tips and tricks to combat winter dryness and keep your skin feeling happy and supple all season long. - Your aesthetician, Ninka B. @ninkabskin
1. Add a humidifier to your living space Consider this as a “must-have!” During winter, we crank up the heat in our homes, which creates dry air. Dry air means dry skin. By adding this simple gadget to your living room, bedroom, and even workplace, you will increase moisture levels in the air, therefore relieving seasonal dryness. Ninka B recommends: Rowenta Aqua Perfect Humidifier, $149.99, crateandbarrel.com
2. Ceramides protect the barrier of your skin If your current cream works for you, then stay with what works for your skin. However, if your skin is feeling dry, irritated, and overall unpleasant, then most likely, the barrier of your skin is not in the best shape. Protecting your skin’s barrier is the most crucial thing, and Ceramides are scientifically proven to strengthen and replenish the skin. Ninka B recommends: SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore, $128, skinceuticals.com
3. Use a body lotion with AHA’s Let’s face it; life can be busy and hectic, which can cause us to deprioritize body skincare. During these colder months, AHA’s play an even larger role in the wellbeing of our skin. I can assure you, adding a body lotion formulated with alpha-hydroxy acids will get rid of dry skin, smooth out the texture, and boost collagen. Ninka B recommends: Paula’s Choice Skin Revealing Body Lotion 10% AHA, $28, paulaschoice.com
4. Don’t leave your hands and feet behind Our hands and feet deserve as much attention as the rest of our body. After each hand washing, remember to apply nourishing hand cream, and before you snuggle in for bedtime, apply a foot cream. These easy tricks will help to elevate dryness, keeping them youthful in the long run. Ninka B recommends: Grown Alchemist Intensive Hand Cream, $27 shop.goop.com Lavido Thera-Intensive Foot Cream, $28, shop.goop.com
5. Antioxidant Serum This step never goes out of style. Your skin needs antioxidant serums year-round, because, as you know, free radicals are around at all times trying to mess with our collagen. That’s why we need to use topical antioxidants, which create a shield between skin and environmental aggressors. So don’t put away your Vitamin C serum during winter. Ninka B recommends: Sircuit Cosmeceuticals Sircuit Weapon+ 10% Vitamin C Therapy Serum, $85, sircuitskin.com
7. Sunscreen At this point, I’m sure we all know how important sunscreen is, and, same as the Antioxidant Serum, this step never goes out of style. It is the #1 product that will keep your skin young. The best sunscreens will not only protect from damaging sun rays but also add hydration and subtle coverage for natural and foundation free skin. Don’t forget: the sun’s rays can be just as harmful in the winter months as they are during summertime. Ninka B recommends: Neova DNA Damage Control Silc SPF 40, $51, dermstore.com
6. Evening self-care I don’t know about you, but I am such a fan of body oils after an evening shower. And it’s all for a good reason! Applying a hydrating oil when your skin is still damp, will lock in the moisture. Giving your skin a silky softness. Ninka B recommends: Anne Semonin Nourishing Body Oil, $55.90, net-a-porter.com
I am excited to see you in the next issue of Genlux! And in the meantime, I wish you a Happy New Year, and I hope these easy to follow tips will bring your skin comfort and a youthful glow. Also, don’t be shy to say ‘Hi’ on IG @ninkabskin Best, Ninka

PROFILE
Sur Zapata
From humble beginnings as a dishwasher to his success as part-owner of Sur Restaurant, and now, film actor and producer, Argentinian-born Guillermo Zapata proves that when opportunity knocks, for goodness’ sake, let her in. —Stephen Kamifuji
Guillermo Zapata can finally exhale. The dreams or goals or opportunities that he’d envisioned for his life have all nearly manifested. But, to get here, the self-proclaimed workaholic shares he’s overcome a few tall obstacles. It was 1992, on the last day of a ten-day vacation in LA, when a wide-eyed, 22-yearold actor, who dreamed of working in Hollywood, was handed an opportunity. “I was having coffee at Cafe Luna. It was exciting for me because this was where many of the Melrose Place television show episodes took place,” says Zapata. “I didn’t speak English, so I asked the Latino busboy the magic words, do you think I could get a job here? That same evening I started working as a dishwasher. I called home to let my family know I wasn’t returning. My dad was very disappointed and he hung up on me. We didn’t speak for a long time.” Within a few years, Zapata leap-frogged to a head-waiter position at another popular restaurant. To support his acting goals, he enrolled in English classes and signed with CESD as his commercial and modeling agency. Then came his next opportunity. An Argentinean family who owned a tiny, six-table restaurant on Robertson, named Sur, was ready to throw in the towel. They offered Zapata a partnership in exchange for fixing it. In turn, Zapata convinced sous chef Joe Martinez to come along for the challenge. Unfortunately, success did not come quickly. “I found myself as an owner but was completely broke,” Zapata shares. “I lost my apartment and my car, but

told Lisa I was looking for a certain amount and that I had other people who also wanted to be partners. ‘Let me stop you right there,’ she said. ‘We don’t need other partners. Look at my purse,’ she said, pointing to her LV bag. ‘We have the money right here, so you can relax.’” Lisa added her exceptional design touch to the Sur interiors, and within seven months, it was ready to premiere. Stephen and Kevin Huvane helped with the guest list that included 300 VIPs. From that moment, Sur thrived.

at that age, you don’t care. I knew that I would get it back. No doubt ever crept in.” Enter the next opportunity: George Michael. “George’s agent asked if I would close the restaurant for his private birthday party. The paparazzi were waiting outside, and word got out about Sur. From there, Kevin Huvane brought many celebrities to my secret place, like Tom Cruise, Madonna, Angelina Jolie—everyone. I would lock the door and protect them. It was a time when there were no camera phones, so it was easy to shield them from being bothered.” In 2002, Zapata recognized an opportunity to expand Sur by leasing the open space next door, but the founding partner didn’t agree, and instead,
decided to go back home to Argentina. It was about this time that a beautiful French girl named Nathalie Pouille stopped by the restaurant for lunch. She came from France to study English at UCLA, and this was one opportunity Zapata wasn’t going to let slip. They dated, eventually married, and now have two lovely daughters, Loulou, 14, and Miarose, 11. “Now, with two brains,” says Zapata, “Nathalie and I created a business plan for our expansion and searched for investors.” The search ended when Ken Todd and Lisa Vanderpump, a couple who owned 26 successful restaurants in London, knocked on Sur’s door. “It was good chemistry from the first moment,” says Guillermo. “I
Then, Lisa lands a spot on the Housewives of Beverly Hills, and, on the heels of that show’s success, she pitches Bravo with a spinoff about Sur, called Vanderpump Rules. It also becomes a hit bringing its own set of challenges. “The A-listers, who loved the quiet, discreet Sur didn’t like the cameras and stopped coming,” says Zapata. On the other hand, tourists love visiting the restaurant they see on television and they arrive in droves. Sur expands again, this time with a new lounge with outdoor space and bumps up to 93 employees. Sur’s success allows Zapata, who looks startlingly like George Clooney, to entertain his first love, which is acting. He recently finished producing and starring in his first film, La Sombra Del Gato, an action thriller that stars Danny Trejo, directed by José María Cicala. Today, the young actor who once washed dishes at Cafe Luna because of watching Melrose Place is now paying it forward to future actors– maybe dreamers–through Sur and Vanderpump Rules, where they might seize the same opportunity.
