supernatural-A™ | restorative retinoid creme Supernatural-A™ is a luxurious, emollient-rich, anti-aging crème formulated with potent anti-aging ingredients that offer significant improvements in the visible signs of aging and skin smoothness. The most important ingredient being patent pending IconicA®. IconicA® is a stabilized, naturally encapsulated Retinaldehyde, form of Vitamin A. It works by helping to speed up the cell-turnover rate, which can help to visibly revitalize skin, as well as improve the appearance of facial lines and skin-discoloration. ChroNOline™ an anti-aging peptide also helps to soften the appearance of surface lines, enhancing the skin’s youthful look and improving the softness of the skin. Adaptonyl®, an MMPi, was included to revitalize stressed skin by helping to support the natural defense barrier function of the skin. All of these multiple innovative technologies merge in this one age-defying complex, resulting in more youthful looking skin that appears more radiant and contoured. This is a game-changer!

GENLUX SAMIA ARSLANE EDITOR IN CHIEF

“Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.” – John Ruskin Am I the only one who loves this rain? Growing up in France where it was raining more often than not, I hated it, because rain came with icy cold and strong winds. In LA it’s totally different. Even when it rains, it’s rarely cold, and it rains so infrequently, I’m excited when it does. Plus, we need it. And like Dolly Parton says, “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” Besides loving the rain, I love me some diamonds too. Have a look at my editor’s picks (p90). Starting with the two gorgeous pieces by Mexican-French jeweler Colette, who just opened her first boutique in LA. On our Outof-Towner page is the talented French designer Alexandre Vauthier (p112). His Fall/Winter 2016-17 Haute Couture

20 GENLUX WINTER/RESORT 2016/17

collection is fabulous. Designer David Meister, who chimes in every season for Genlux, offers up some of his must-haves (p100). We profile designer Brad Robinson (p102), and restaurateur of SUR restaurant, Guillermo Zapata (p106). Our Genlux Restaurant Guide covers some trendy new places, along with some old favorites (p104), and on our Getaways pages, we highlight Carmel, Seattle and Palm Springs (p107). We reserved our cover story for the remarkable Sanela Diana Jenkins and her rise from Bosnian war refugee to CEO of the successful beverage brand she owns and operates, Neuro Drinks. Talk about a powerful woman—not only does she employ over 100 at her Burbank-based corporation, she also heads up two charitable foundations and is co-chair, along with the man himself, for the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party. A true philanthropist.

Actor Edgar Ramirez (Hands of Stone, Joy, Zero Dark Thirty) hosted the kick off of Gran Centenario Tequila’s Angels on Earth 2017 at Sunset Tower Hotel in Hollywood alongside insiders and industry influencers. The UNICEF goodwill ambassador and He for She partner helped encourage guests to sign up for a volunteer beach cleanup initiative with Heal The Bay on February 18, 2017, giving them the chance to become ‘Angels’ themselves. The intimate event was able to recruit 80 people to donate their time to the project. “The “real angels are those amongst us who make a difference in the lives of others, no matter how small the deed,” said Edgar Ramirez. healthebay.org

STILL WATERS RUN DEEP

Meet Sanela Diana Jenkins, whose fascinating real-life story reads like a Hollywood novel. Stella McCartney teal sable envers satin Allison top, $2065, ike the opening sequence to a James Bond film, Sanela Diana Jenkins’ long driveway off the PCH in stellamccartney.com Malibu leads to large gates that part slowly, welcoming you to her three-acre private lair. Lining the Stella McCartney silk crepe de chine path to her home are an army of automobiles (all hers). A pair of Lamborghinis, a black Rolls-Royce, Abigail skirt, $4055, one of those cool new Bentley SUVs, and for a quick getaway, a souped-up, blacked-out Shelby Musneimanmarcus.com tang. At any moment, you’d expect to see Dr. No propelling down from a Jennifer helicopter, Fisher brass silver abstract line and like a Hollywood movie, the story of Diana’s rise from Bosnian war refugee to all cuff, $655, jenniferof this—and so much more—is so fascinating, it’s hard to imagine that it’s fiall true. sherjewelry.com

A quick scan of Diana’s breathtaking property, and clues to her love of water (ironic, since she was born under the fire sign of Leo) are everywhere. The 180-degree view of the Pacific Ocean, the custom-built outdoor koi aquarium housing her collection of rare tropical fish, and then there’s the curious, round-shaped structure built to the side of her home. Inside, a huge circular Dead Sea spa is filled with water imported from— where else—the Dead Sea, over 7,500 miles away. “The water’s salt content is so high it alkalizes your body and is very healing,” Diana says. “In fact, all the cures can be found within the world.” Diana centers herself in the makeup chair in her colorfully appointed guest house. The petite, size-2 blonde beauty, who has two teenage children, gives suggestions to the hair and makeup team and glances at stylist Lia Davis’ fashion picks. Jenkins’ good friend and photographer Steven Gomillion pops in to check on things and shares that it might rain today, so we’ll likely shoot inside. First up is a stunning Saint Laurent gown paired with Diana’s personal collection of diamonds. Between applications of foundation, blush, lipstick, and lashes, Diana shares her story. “I grew up in a small town in the former Yugoslavia and had a very happy childhood—the kind every child dreams of,” she recalls. “Then war suddenly broke out. First, there were gunshots, then bombs, and the next thing we knew we needed to escape our town.” The war was the Bosnian war (1992–1995) and though her parents and brother would remain in Bosnia, they urged her— then just a teenager—to leave. She fled to a refugee camp in the city of Split in Croatia where she spent 18 months before heading to London. There, Diana learned to speak English and sold silver jewelry on the streets to put herself through school, eventually graduating from City University with honors. Tragically, back at home, the war had taken its toll. Killed were more than 100,000 including many of Diana’s friends and cousins. Just days before the end of the war, her brother, Irnis, was also killed by Serbian forces. Even more heartbreaking, Diana’s father, who’d lost his parents in 1944 during World War II, would now also lose his only son. “What I’ve learned through my life is that we all get our fair share of suffering,” says Jenkins. “Different people suffer differently, and nobody escapes it. In my case, the war was just something that happened to my country and me.” People also experience success differently, and Diana’s is off the charts. In 2009, she started Neuro Drinks, a wildly popular line of great-tasting smart drinks that use essential ingredients

for a broad range of health-related results. Diana passionately goes into hyperdrive, spewing in auctioneer-speak about detoxification, amino acids, better focus, building immunity, better sleep, antioxidants, better play, more energy, a trimmer body, better health, finally summing Neuro all up in four words: “Drinks with a purpose.” As Chairman/CEO, Diana is hands-on with Neuro Drinks, putting in 12 hours a day, six days a week in steering her 100-employee company. She oversees every aspect from formulation to packaging, marketing and music to social media. After all, if experiences have taught her anything, it’s that time is precious, and she makes no bones about being decisive. “I don’t waste people’s time. If I like or don’t like something, my face will show it immediately. I’m passionate about everything, and I’m an all-or-nothing person.” On the subject of charity, Jenkins offers a practical determination. “In life, there’s one important measurement worth our reflection. That’s the measure of how much we are willing to ease others’ suffering. For me, whenever I could do something, I would, and will, do something.” One of those ‘somethings’ is the Sanela Diana Jenkins Foundation for Bosnia and Herzegovina in Memory of Irnis Ćatić. The foundation provides funding for the medical school at the University of Sarajevo and helps establish schools and orphanages in Bosnia. It also builds homes for the poor, supplies emergency aid and relief, and cleans the country’s freshwater lakes. In 2009, in conjunction with the UCLA School of Law, Jenkins started the Sanela Diana Jenkins Human Rights Project—the first endowed program on international justice and human rights at any law school in the western United States. She continues to work with the faculty and students to advance human-rights causes around the world, including bringing war criminals to justice in Bosnia-Herzegovina and addressing human trafficking issues in the Congo. Perhaps her highest-profile philanthropic endeavor is sponsoring and co-chairing the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party—one of the hottest tickets in town on Oscar night. Every year since 2010, Neuro has helped the Foundation raise millions. “I’ve been working with my good friends Elton John and David Furnish since back in London when the event was called the White Tiara party.” As the sun begins to set, Diana steps outside for the last shot of the day wearing a bright red Valentino jumpsuit that hugs her trim figure like a glove, and right on cue, drops of precious water start falling from the sky.

These 10 charities are not living up to their missions. Each spends more than 50% of its budget paying for-profit fundraising professionals to solicit your hard-earned money. Makeup artist FIONA STILES reveals how she got Lily Collins’ beauty look for the 74th Annual Golden Globes

“What a dress! It was so beautiful and inspiring… We wanted to do a look that was beautiful but also bold and modern. It’s such a modern look, and Lily pulled it off incredibly,” says makeup artist Fiona Stiles.

EYES/BROWS:

• Lily’s brows are so incredible, so I mostly leave them alone. I just filled in the arches ever so slightly using the Fiona Stiles Beauty Micro-Precision Brow Pencil in Neutral Brown.

• On the eyes, I wanted to create shape but still maintain a light and airy look, so I actually used a Lancôme lip pencil, Le Lipstick in Natural Mauve, with the Lancôme Blush Subtil in Aplum dusted over it to create a wash of color on the eyes. • Under the brows, I used Lancôme Color Design Eyeshadow in Pink Pearls to blend the colors.

FACE:

• After prepping the skin with Lancôme Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate Serum, I lightly

evened out Lily’s skin with Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Long 24H Wear Foundation in

110 Ivoire C and brightened with the Lancôme Effacernes Concealer in Ivoire. • Keeping the look light and fresh was paramount, so I used Lancôme Blush Subtil in Aplum, a soft, dusty pink, on the cheeks for that timeless, romantic feel.

LIPS:

• Last but not least, I wanted the lips to be powdery matte, just an intense stamp of red, so I used the Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in Souvenir and dusted a touch of loose powder to take away any shine.

100 GENLUX WINTER/RESORT 2016/17

• Lily has stunning lashes, so a coat or two of mascara does the trick. Using the jet-black Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara gave the perfect flirty lash. I skipped the bottom lashes to keep the look fresh.

And here’s to You Mr. Robinson, for putting good ideas to work for social good

DESIGNERPROFILE

GENLUXSHOP

What a Difference a Denim Makes By Courtney Fortune

Brad Robinson is, unequivocally, an ideas guy. He’s a dreamer. When you talk with him, it’s hard not to get totally sucked into his revelations. That’s why his role at the center of the Downtown Los Angeles culture boom is a perfect fit. As a leader at the Skid Row Housing Trust, whose ‘housing first’ ethos helps provide quality apartments and reintegration resources to the homeless, Brad can put his big ideas to work. Their latest project, the launch of Skid Row Denim Academy, combines his love of social justice with the utility and beauty of selvedge denim. Expertly crafted denim jackets and jeans that aim to start a conversation and create awareness to end the homelessness cycle. With sales directly supporting the Housing Trust, it’s fashion with a heartbeat and vision, and pieces you’ll wear with pride. Here, Robinson answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire. Describe yourself: I am a father and activist. I believe in community and never underestimating the power of showing up. Your role? My role [at Skid Row Housing Trust] is to drive the perception or conversation toward the solutions to homelessness, so everyone can help make a meaningful and lasting difference. Your passions? My two sons, and building a better future where all kids— regardless of income, ability, or background—understand the importance of being of service to others. Style mantra? My style is driven by utility, so I usually look like a photojournalist on the front lines. I roll up my sleeves (literally) and get to work, investing in a few high-quality items that will last a long time. That is why I’m all about raw denim. ‘Aha’ moment? All the garments were designed and manufactured in Downtown Los Angeles and sourced from local vendors. Skid Row Hous-

ing Trust is all about bringing the Downtown community together for solutions to homelessness. When the idea came to us, it felt like the obvious next step. Why denim? Denim is a durable and resilient fabric. We use limited-run raw selvedge, so each run of Skid Row Denim Academy jeans and jackets is unique. Each fade tells a story. Best advice? Mistakes are not a bad thing. If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not changing yourself. Outreach inspiration? Everyone needs and deserves a home. Before you can heal, seek treatment, get a job, or work toward any type of future, you first need a safe and stable place to live. Downtown Los Angeles evolution? DTLA is diverse and constantly evolving, so I’d like to see it harness change to improve the community for all its residents.

Table for Two Guillermo and Nathalie Zapata photographed by MachadoMorassut-Ciccala

It’s a Sur Thing With little more than his pocketful of dreams, at 22, Guillermo Zapata landed in Los Angeles from Buenos Aires. He came to Hollywood to become an actor. Back home in Argentina, he’d studied at the National Conservatory of Drama Art and worked in television series and films, but the LA acting market wasn’t so easy to crack. To make ends meet, Zapata found a job washing dishes at Cynthia’s restaurant, where he quickly rose through the ranks to manager. Then, in 1998, he found a small space on the corner of Robertson and Melrose to build his own restaurant. He called it SUR, and it had only a few tables. My, how things have changed. SUR has grown to two buildings and an al fresco garden dining area and lounge, and has become one of LA’s most popular restaurants. Here, Zapata answers our Genlux Two-Word Questionnaire. Describe yourself: Positive. Determinate. Passionate. Ambitious. Stubborn.

Workout regimen? Boxing, Taekwondo, running, and tennis.

Three blessings? My wife and my two daughters.

Favorite getaway? Formentera, Spain

Your passion? Life

Favorite quote? “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”

Success secret? Never give up! I am living the American Dream—every day.

Your hero? Pope Francis

Guilty pleasure? Dulce de leche

Biggest regret? No regrets

Lucky day? The day my wife Nathalie came into the restaurant. She was visiting from Paris, and I convinced her to stay in LA. We got married and now have two girls. Her business background and European flair helped the restaurant to grow. In 2005 we partnered with established restaurateurs from London, Ken and Lisa Todd. They helped expand SUR to another level, adding a magnificent lounge and garden that only Lisa Vanderpump could have designed. SUR became the sexiest restaurant in West Hollywood.

DNA change? All your qualities and flaws make you who you are; let’s not change it.

Your passion? Besides running SUR, I’m able to go back to my first passion, working as a model and actor. I am currently working on producing and acting on several projects.

Favorite charities? We are grateful to be able to give back. We support Project Angel Food, who helps to feed the sick who are battling critical illnesses, The Aids Foundation, and Stop Yulin Forever, to name a few.

Happiest moments? The birth of my girls.

2022 plan? I hope to be watching my film on a big screen!

108 GENLUX WINTER/RESORT 2016/17

Your hobbies? Discovering new eclectic music from around the world to fill the air of SUR Restaurant and Lounge. Embarrassing moments? Not being a great English speaker caused me a lot of embarrassment. I remember being laughed at while announcing the daily specials when working at my first restaurant, Cynthia’s.

Genlux Out-of-Towner

It’s not hard to spot a Vauthier woman. She’s strong, sexy and exudes empowerment, donned in black silk velvet, camouflage hues, sequin leggings and deconstruction done in the best way. The pieces in his latest runway and ready-to-wear collections are worn like armor with dramatic shapes and plumes and trimmed with gold hardware. Sort of how I imagine haute couture in the apocalypse. Alexandre Vauthier was born in France, where he found a unique talent for sketching and structuring clothing. He graduated from École Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode and got his start in fashion working at Thierry Mugler. Soon he received the opportunity to join Jean Paul Gaultier, taking the lead as studio director. And over the next eight years, he honed his skills and vision with the iconic brand before stepping out on his own with the launch of the first Alexandre Vauthier collection in 2009. Popstar Rihanna is credited with propelling the designer into the celebrity spotlight, commissioning red-carpet looks, tour costumes, and exclusive album cover features. In 2010, after four independent runway shows, Vauthier was invited to 2011-2012 Haute Couture Week. And from there his brand grew swiftly into its elegant, cutting-edge potential. Today he caters to an audience of esteemed couture clients and celebrities from all over the world, as he expands his artistic reach to include forward-thinking fashion, chic RTW, costumes, perfume, music and interior design. In this issue, we catch up with the prolific designer to see what’s on his hot list for LA. –Courtney Fortune
