LET’S LAYER IT UP!
Saint Laurent
We have snow in Austria and how delicious it is! It’s so cold outside, I feel like a school girl trying to keep warm. Luckily fashion is at its best when layered, so I can wear everything at once. Like Alexander McQueen’s wonderful coat that wears great here. As we begin the new year, it’s very much like the last, I am still in love with Gucci fashion and their lovely bags. It’s that time of year, where, with the Oscars, and Baftas quickly approaching, I am fasting at the Viva Mayr Clinic, a beautiful health spa. The Clinic is a luxurious club in the Lake District of Austria and boasts having Kate Moss as a guest. It up-to-date sports equipment helps you get ready for the red-carpet next month in Hollywood—where your skin needs to be glowing. This year I shall use lipstick called Demon, named after me, from Trinny London. I’ll also use foundation from Rihanna’s brand Fenty along with a dash of Charlotte Tilbury powder. Voila! I shall feel fantastic.

The Evening Standard Awards in London are approaching as are the BAFTAs so I have bought a beautiful tailcoat with a net skirt in layers of sparkling chiffon from Ralph Lauren. I am sponsoring the best script this year, so I have to look not only glamorous, but clever. Who will win, that is the question? Will it be Alexandre Desplat, who performed the music for Shape of Water; and will Gary Oldman win for his portrayal of Winston Churchill? As awards’ fashion goes, the Oscar’s are sexier, but this year, with the hashtag Me Too brigade, it would be better to be a bit more austere and chic. If women wish to be respected by men we need to cover up don’t you think?

Everyday style? My style is a knee-length pencil skirt with a fitted Thierry Mugler-inspired blazer and high heels, a deviation from my weekday scrubs, which can get boring. Skincare regimen? I’m fortunate to have one of the world’s best dermatologists, Dr. Ava Shamban, as a friend. She’s put me on a simple skincare regimen. I’m good at keeping my skin clean, and I do the facials recommended in her book.
Fantasy dinner? A dream dinner would be with Michelle and Barack Obama and the previous king and queen of Persia. Island must-haves? I’d take my cell phone, because I’m constantly checking to make sure everyone is okay; my electric toothbrush (and not because I’m a dentist, but because I’m addicted to it); and Genlux to keep me busy!
TE
Your passion? Transforming unhealthy smiles into healthy beautiful ones. When people feel good about themselves, they are more confident and happier and are able to pursue their goals with confidence. My passion involves taking a patient who has neglected their teeth, either due to fear of the dentist or other reason, and help improve their smile.
O IN
You’re wearing? Grey’s Anatomy black scrubs and rose-colored Puma sneakers—which is what I wear to work every day with a white lab coat.
Best traits? I would hope my patients would say my best character trait is compassion and empathy and the ability to make them feel as though they were family.
Favorite charity? Face Forward. A charity started by my dear friend, Deborah Alessi, and her husband, Dr. Alessi, a plastic surgeon. Our goals are to rebuild the lives of men, women, and children that are survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other cruel acts. I help with dental reconstruction needs. Currently, I’m working with a patient whose face and upper teeth were destroyed by gunshots. It’s rewarding being able to help rebuild their lives.
TA K E
TW
Your background? I was born in Tehran, Iran, where our family lived in X U a beautiful house and had a vacation home in Northern Iran by the Caspian Sea. My father moved us to Los Angeles, where, at first, life was difficult since I didn’t speak English very well. I finished elementary school here and went to Marymount High School. I managed to graduate as class Valedictorian. I then went to UCLA to study biochemisty, and continued on to the UCLA School of Dentistry and then did a post-doctorate program in Advance Dentistry and Cosmetic Dentistry. Nine years of UCLA, a true Bruin!
Childhood teasing? When I first moved to the United States, kids teased me because I didn’t speak English and would say things incorrectly! Your hero? My hero growing up was my father. He had such a passion for life and always lived it to its fullest. He had the kindest heart and he was trying to help anyone in need. He told me I could achieve whatever I wanted and to stay strong in the face of adversity. Unfortunately, I lost him way too early, but his teachings and love have helped me every step of my life. Your superpower? I guess my superpower is transforming people’s smiles. Embarrasing moment? I was playing piano in an 8th grade recital in front of hundreds of people when I got so nervous I completely forgot all the notes and could not play anything. It was horrible! DNA change? I would like to tone down my type-A personality. As a wife, mom of two and a professional, I want to make sure everything about each of those is perfect, so it tends to create a lot of stress—not just for me, but for those around me. I’m learning that everything can’t always be perfect and that it’s okay! Three blessings? 1. My husband, Michael, whom I’ve been with since I was 18. He is the most loving, most encouraging, most positive, and the strongest person I’ve ever met. I’m blessed to be alongside him all these years. 2. My two beautiful daughters, Natalia, 13, and Isabella, 7, and 3. My loving parents who gave me the foundation to be the mom, wife and professional I am today. 2023 plans? I’ll email you on that later. LOL.

E
rika Jane, aka Erika Girardi, calls me this morning from the 1920s Pasadena mansion she shares with attorney Thomas Girardi, her husband of almost twenty years. She’s sitting in her enormous closet, wearing Gilligan & O’Malley pajamas from Target. “I like Target a lot,” remarks Erika. “I enjoy pushing a cart down the aisle and buying things I don’t really need like toilet brushes, and I shop all of the departments—kids, sporting goods, they even have groceries.” Nowadays, even in her dressed-down style of sweats, T-shirt, no makeup, and a pair of sneaks, Erika can hardly traipse through Target, or anywhere, without someone commenting on how much they enjoy her on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or her stint on Dancing with the Stars. And that’s only the half of it. As a successful singer, Erika Jayne has nine singles that topped Billboard’s dance charts. The first was “Roller Coaster” from her debut album, Pretty Mess, which is also the title of her new book. “My new book is my memoir,” she declares, “It’s about where I come from and stories of my life. Some are funny, some are sad. I hope that the book makes people laugh. I also hope they’re inspired to reconnect with something they’ve lost in the past. This year, if I could do one thing, it would be to encourage people to reach for the stars and know that their best days are ahead and not behind.” Erika Chahoy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to a single mother, in 1971. She went to North Atlanta High School for the Performing Arts, where, “My favorite subjects were history or English,” she says, “and my least favorite was math. I’m not mathematically inclined. It is the language of the cosmos—I just needed more time to understand it.” She also admits she wasn’t the picture of beauty she is now. “I was a really skinny, knock-kneed kid, and my teeth were too big for my head.” Erika was also a tomboy. “I grew up in Georgia, so I played softball and water-skied and did other fun country stuff. We had a lake house, so I’d love to go fishing. We’d go to Alaska and down to the Sea of Cortez. I’ve fished all over the world, and I like to camp. I’ve been to a safari in Africa—not a hunting one—please make that clear for everybody. I enjoy getting out and into nature.” Erika’s favorite year growing up was 1987. “It was a good year. I had my own car, I’d drive everywhere, I had a boyfriend, I was long and skinny, and I was cute,” Erika says,
72 GENLUX WINTER/RESORT 2018
laughing, “My mom and I were living together and had a great time. I was traveling, and I was working. So now, inside, I’m always 16 years old—17 max.” At 18, Erika married her first husband and, at 21, had a son who is now a police officer. “I wasn’t a strict parent,” Erika states, “I didn’t have to do much. He was always responsible. He never snuck out, he never stole the car, and didn’t drink until he was 21. From an early age, his focus was being a police officer.” Erika rattles off the life lessons she shared with her son. “I told him to rely on yourself and to be responsible for the choices you make. It’s up to you to be successful or not and to live with the consequences. Be strong enough to accept your failures, weaknesses, and mistakes, but don’t let them define you. You must be aware that you’ve got to go to work; show up every day with enthusiasm, passion, and love for what you do. People come into your life for a reason or a season. People come in as teachers. People come in as friends. People come in as adversaries. You must recognize their role and know that you cannot rely on anyone to get you anywhere. It’s up to you and no one else.” One of Erika’s passions is cosmetics, and naturally, makeup companies are lining up for her marketing potential. Two brands jumped on her bandwagon early: Beauty Blender, an ingenious makeup sponge applicator shaped like an egg, and Two Faced cosmetics, a brand known for its fanciful and sometimes wacky packaging. “I speak about makeup with authority,” Erika admits, “because I’m always putting it on and always taking it off.” If there’s one group that has come to embrace Erika Jayne, it’s the LGBT community. She has supported it over the last 20 years with her time and money. “Equality for everyone and acceptance of people as they are is what’s going to change the world for the better. GLAAD is one of the organizations that’s helping to make that change real. Their work with the media and entertainment industry is bringing a light, not just to the LGBTQ community, but our culture, and I’ve been happy to support however I can.” There was one last question to ask. Has this interview been with Erika Jayne or Erika Girardi? “Just Erika,” she deadpans. “I’m Erika, and everyone is Erika Jayne, and everyone is Erika Girardi. There’s always that little bit of aggressive-rebelliousnot-giving-up-spirit that’s in all of us.” G

Nina B’s Beauty Habits for 8 Hello, again. It’s Nina B, your aesthetician advisor at Genlux. I’m the European model who earned a Masters in Aesthetics because of my passion for helping people achieve glowy, youthful skin.
1. Get Plenty of Sleep
Science has repeatedly shown that women who sleep more, look younger. That’s because lack of sleep stimulates processes in the skin that damage protein fibers which are responsible for our skin’s elasticity. So the up-all-night and work-all-day “chic” look, went out with the old New York club scene. Try to get at least eight hours of sleep.
2. Get Silk Pillowcases
They’re a small luxury with grand benefits! Silk fibers help keep creases and sleep lines from forming and they help keep moisture close to your skin. Additionally, silk is hypoallergenic and makes your hair pretty. Quite a combo. Nina B. recommends: Silk pillowcase, $79, Saks Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills, 310-275-4211
3. A Berry a Day Keeps the Gray Skin Away To each morning’s breakfast, add blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. Or have a different berry each morning. Berries brim with powerful antioxidants and Vitamin C -- absolute necessities for vibrant skin and anti-aging. Berries also help regulate your metabolism and promote healthy intestines. Best of all, berries are naturally sweet and delicious. Nina B. recommends: eating a handful daily.
4. Scrub Away All the Dead Skin Cells
Having body skin regiment is as important as looking after your face. Few times a week pick up a body scrub and gently massage all your skin with it. Then rinse away and pat dry. Nina B. recommends: Avaha Softening Butter Dead Sea Salt Scrub, $24, ahava.com
5. Sleep with a Mask
Skin depends on water for youthfulness and optimal functioning. A mask will provide your skin with optimum hydration while you dream. The mask is formulated with super-nourishing avocado and apricot kernel oil and will feel heavenly on your skin. Nina B. recommends: Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask, $27, Sephora
6. Secret Weapon: Use a Massage Oil after Washing! Following your relaxing bath or shower, when your skin is still damp and receptive to nutrients, apply hydrating oil. Your body will feel lovely and contain high levels of antioxidants. Nina B recommends: Caudalie Divine Oil, $49, net-aporter.com
7. Use a European Trick for Puffy Eyes All you need to heal puffy eyes, you’ll find in your kitchen cabinet… green tea. Let a tea bag steep in hot water for ten minutes and then cool. Dip in two cotton rounds and lay those tea-soaked cotton rounds on your eyelids. Swelling and puffiness will diminish and the skin under your eyes will become brighter and smoother. Simple home magic. Nina B. recommends: Yogi Green Tea Pure Green, $4.89.
8. Be a Royal and Take Luxurious Baths
BEAUTY
GENLUXSHOP
After a long day, there’s nothing better than a relaxing bath… but did you know that even weekly baths can visibly improve the appearance of cellulite? Adding Epsom salts aids the smoothing and detoxifying benefits of a bath. Epsom also contains magnesium and sulfur, which relax and rejuvenate. Add some scented candles, your tiara, and you’re set for a royal bath of turning back the clock and looking younger. Don’t let Meghan Markle have all the fun. ;) Nina B. recommends: Dr. Teal’s Pure Epsom Salt Soaking Solution, $5.99, CVS, and L’Occitane Lavendar Foaming Bath, $69, usa.loccitane.com
9. Nourish Your Feet Want that great feeling we get from glamorous pedicures? Well, here’s a trick I learned from doing too many runaway shows (ouch!). Take two minutes each evening to apply a nourishing, luxurious cream to your feet. They’ll feel relaxed and baby soft…just like they feel after a pedicure. Nina B recommends: L’occitane Shea Butter Foot Cream, $29, Nordstrom
10. Remember Daily Eye Cream!
Especially after depuffing with green tea. Helena Rubinstein, the woman who invented modern skincare (my idol), famously advised... Eye cream should be smoothed over the eyelids with very light strokes, like “fingerprinting” under the eyes, from outer corner to inner. Nina B. recommends: Naturopathica Vitamin K Brightening Eye Serum, $74, naturopathica.com Nina B. @ninabskin

Seeking Setouchi
MUST VISIT: Relax and take in the tranquil Korakuen Gardens in the Okayama prefecture. Designed in the Kaiyu (aka scenic promenade) style, each angle and pathway presents visitors with a new and stunning view. The Korakuen Garden is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.
Located about a four-hour train ride from Tokyo, the Setouchi region is Japan’s hidden gem that encompasses seven prefectures and 350 islands.
MUST STAY:
A ryokan is a Japanese inn that follows traditional design methods using tatami floors, sliding doors, futons on the floor, and a balcony to take in the surrounding views. We suggest the Kotohira-Kadan ryokan situated in the Kagawa prefecture. It offers natural hot spring baths and sits in the midst of a Japanese garden with stunning mountain views. kotohira-kadan.jp/english.html
MUST SAVOR:
MUST SHOOT:
Most know that Kobe beef is the holy grail of all meat, but few know that to be certified cattle must be born within the Hyōgo prefecture and fed only local grasses and water. Only 3,000 herds of Kobe beef exist and less than 30 restaurants in the United States serve it, including Jean-Georges at the Waldorf-Astoria, Beverly Hills. jeangeorges.com
Instagram and Snapchat followers will love the Naruto Whirlpools of the Tokushimi and Awaji Islands—a true spectacle. Around 65-feet in diameter, these whirlpools are some of the world’s largest and most beautiful. Visitors can view them through the glass floors of the Naruto bridge or on a cruise ship that takes them right up close.

MUST TASTE:
When in Setouchi, you should try fugu (aka blowfish), the Japanese delicacy from the Yamaguchi prefecture, the leading producer of fugu. Because the fish is venomous, chefs must go through years of certification training. Michelin-starred restaurant Yoshiko, located in Osaka, specializes in extravagant dishes and appetizers prepared with fugu.
MUST SPA:
Japan resides on volcanically active land, so it’s no surprise there are thousands of onsens aka natural hot springs on its islands. One of the most famous is the Dogo Onsen located in the Ehime Prefecture of the Setouchi Region. With over 1,000 years of history, it’s a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. However, visitors are encouraged to come prepared. Even though onsens are a place of relaxation and rejuvenation, they also have strict traditional etiquettes and rules (see sidebar). https://tinyurl.com/y9zbnakc
Dogo Onsen
Onsen Etiquette 1. Wash carefully before entering communal bath. 2. Don’t take photos. 3. Many onsen ryokan have male-only/femaleonly hours, so look for appropriate times. 4. Enter the water modestly by placing your towel in front of you. 5. Never wring your towel in the bath or let it touch the water. 6. While bathing, put your towel atop your head, or set on side of the bath. 7. Respect other bathers, don’t splash, stir, or swim. 8. When finished, wipe off excess water with your towel prior to re-entering the locker room area. 9. Tattoos rarely allowed.
