can’t believe summer is almost over! Thankfully, it never gets too cold in LA, and at least we can look forward to the change of seasons—and of fashion. What are you all going to wear this fall? How cute will you look in your new LVs or LBs? Do you know yet? Read on, and hopefully you will be in the know. Fall is all about being back to opulence, abundance and luxury. Coco Chanel once said that luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it isn’t luxury. I believe the designers have achieved that. They made a clear statement and closed a chapter on austere, minimalist silhouettes to open a new one on romance and glitter. The future is bright, both economically and in fashion. Runways are filled with luxuriant attire, precious stone adornments, embroideries galore, and shimmering fabrics. There’s also a profusion of feathers and leathers that come in myriad colors and textures. In this issue we bring you the key trends. One is gold, but not just any gold— metallic, glossy, lacquered gold. Christian Louboutin, never one to disappoint, brings us the gold metallic and shearling bootie—a shining example of doing it right. Be careful not to blind people around you when you wear Barbara Bui’s cute bomber jacket in gold leather (p116). There are lots of deep red tones from Raf Simons, who debuted his first haute couture collection for Christian Dior. Then there’s Michael Kors’ long sparkle dress (p115). One of my favorite picks is the new Cartier minaudière evening bag in red lacquer and gold finish. This is a very special clutch...more like a piece of art (p28). On September 6, Genlux and the Beverly Center are celebrating Fashion’s Night Out. We will also be celebrating the release of this issue with the gorgeous Kendall Jenner on the cover. The next day, I hop on a plane to attend Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, then on to Milan. My plan is to end the trip in Paris, where I look forward to the October 3rd opening of the brand-new Louis Vuitton fine-jewelry boutique on the legendary Place Vendôme. Bisous à tous!

The chic luncheon brought together fashion’s leading ladies of California. Guests were greeted poolside with signature Cipriani bellinis and dined on burrata and heirloom tomatoes, branzino and risotto alla primavera. The ladies were treated to personalized Rachel Roy Dress Salon cupcakes from Sweet E’s Bakery. Guests included celebrity stylists Deborah Waknin, Jessica Paster and Elizabeth Stewart. “The dress, to me, is about the ease of putting on one singular piece and making that your statement. This is a collection of dresses that flatter, fit, and move with each need of my client’s busy life,” said Rachel.

I
never thought I’d get divorced. I was a child of divorce, and to me the “d” word was a dirty one.
I was just entering my thirties, my two children were growing and thriving, my career was advancing, but my marriage to Kyle was crumbling. We were college sweethearts, solid friends, and managing our full lives together side by side. But, as that old cliché goes, we were growing apart. After more than twelve years together, eight of them married, our relationship began to dissolve. But you see, the details about our decline aren’t as important as what came after. In 2007, I woke up a single mom of two, living thousands of miles away from my family back home in Indiana. But thankfully, I had a fantastic TV job in LA, hosting a show that challenged me creatively and also filled me emotionally. The Daily 10 cast and crew were like family. That experience brought laughter into my life every day, and was in many ways an escape from all the heartache I was feeling after my divorce. When the lights would go on, I would grit my teeth and smile through the hopeless feelings I was having about my future. I couldn’t lie in bed self-loathing; I had to soldier on for my boys. Time would heal, and eventually I began to understand that for Kyle and me, being friends was better than being husband and wife. And I also felt that our children were adjusting well—all things considered. It was the afternoon of my oldest son Austin’s birthday party at our home. He was turning seven. Several of the kids’ friends were invited, my girl friends and their husbands were there, and of course, Kyle wouldn’t miss it. I knew he had been dating Sarah for several months, and so when he respectfully called beforehand to ask if she could come to the party, I said yes. My friends were astonished. “Are you okay? How are you holding it together? How are you corralling kids, overseeing the face-painting, leading the happy birthday song, and not losing your mind knowing she is here?!” And then something happened. She asked if I could use her help. A moment later I was cutting the cake and she was scooping the ice cream. We were side by side. It was then and there, in that very moment, I knew it wasn’t about me. It wasn’t about us. It was about the boys. It was about forgiveness. And most of all, it was about love.
Fast-forward more than four years, and Sarah and Kyle are married. I, too, have found love again. I married Rhys last October. And today, long after the divorce, I consider my family to be progressive, healthy, and, according to many who know us, even inspirational. Our Modern Family exists because of a conscious choice to put our children first. Once that determination had been made, the fruits of that decision included a continued friendship post-marriage with my ex, and eventually, new friendships among the four adults involved. I started noticing how rare our dynamic was at the kids’ basketball and baseball games. Other parents would easily confuse who was married to whom because of the loving, collaborative effort on all of our parts. Then teachers started chiming in: “Whatever you’re doing at home, it’s working!” The boys were getting reports from the classroom indicating they were born leaders, confident, positive, and well mannered. I was also told how at ease they were when discussing their parents—all four of them—without hesitation. I’m not patting myself on the back. Kyle and I set a precedent that not only do we ‘get along’ for the kids’ sake, but our desire to continue co-parenting would have to be acceptable to the new partners entering our lives. Sarah and Rhys not only support and encourage the ‘Joy Division,’ as we know it today, but they are an integral part of it. We take trips together. We spend holidays together. We go to the boys’ ballgames together. We go to teacher conferences together. We’ve even had barbecues turn into sleepovers. We tear up during toasts around the dinner table, giving thanks for our happily ever after. My parents and Kyle’s parents, at first, would scratch their heads. My siblings questioned my ease in moving forward and forgetting the past. Just this last Christmas, I had a house full of people that included my parents, Kyle’s parents, Sarah’s parents, and Rhys’s parents, all of whom, as you can imagine, are amazed at the unconventional love fest among us all. Our story has been spreading. I constantly run into people who say, “You need to share your story. You should write a book about this!” And so this, here, is my first attempt at sharing our story. I genuinely want to alert others to the possibilities of what life can be for you and your children after divorce. It is possible to reboot and achieve a symbiotic, thriving family dynamic. Sure, there are a number of variables involved, and if one person in the group had not shared the same vision, none of this would be possible. But ours is love—divided and conquered. G

It was Cornelia, ginormous hair and all, who soared to the top of the social ladder, becoming the 80s Deb of the Decade—the first to publicly rebel against Long Island’s social status quo and head for the Quaaluded-out discos of Studio 54, Limelight, and Xenon. Her BFFs read like the Who’s Cool of Manhattan: Andy Warhol, Francesco Scavullo, Liza Minnelli, Halston, Boy George, and Mick Jagger (whom she reportedly dated, though her lips can’t be pried). “I had a lot of great friends and people who were inspirational to me in the eighties,” Cornelia shares on the phone from her home in Westbury, New York, where she grew up and is now living. “That whole New York scene is where I learned the most about life. One of my fondest memories is when Andy and I would walk his two dachshunds, Amos and Andy, through the park. He loved those dogs so much.” That odd Warhol/Guest kinship also resulted in a Warhol painting of the young deb that now hangs in her 11,532-square-foot, elevenbedroom, six-bathroom home. Her sprawling 16-acre estate possesses a tennis court, three greenhouses, a few cottages and a 17-stall barn and paddocks. There’s also a resident donkey named Madonna and a nine-member brood of canines including Oscar, the Chihuahua rescued from a dumpster while Cornelia was in LA for the Academy Awards, and Cash (named after Johnny) the Newfoundland. Though life’s peachy at the Guests’, Cornelia has her concerns. “We are killing our planet through factory farming. That’s why I’m doing my best to create an intelligent solution. I have a brand that’s cruelty-free. I have cruelty-free handbags [you’d swear they were leather] and I have Cornelia Guest cookies [delicious chocolate-chip treats] where we don’t use animal
products. A portion of the sales go to the Humane Society of New York where I am on the board.” Recently, to show her support of PETA’s no-fur stance, (old society, please cover your eyes) Cornelia bared all for the charity’s “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” ad campaign. Another famous Guest family photograph is Slim Aaron’s 1955 iconic image of Cornelia’s mom, the late author, equestrian, and socialite C.Z. Guest and her brother Alexander taken in front of the family’s resort-size pool in Palm Beach. According to Cornelia, this photo never hung in the family home—undoubtedly too pedestrian for the family gallery compared to the likes of John Singer Sargent’s portrait of Cornelia’s infant dad, Winston Guest, on the lap of his grandmother, Anne Phipps. Winston Frederick Churchill Guest was godson and second cousin to Winston Churchill, and an allied member to the Phipps family steel and real estate fortune. He and C.Z. were wed at Ernest Hemingway’s ranch in Cuba, where Hemingway himself was the best man. Cornelia’s godparents were the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. On the list to the Guest family home were John and Jacqueline Kennedy, Truman Capote, Rudolf Nureyev, and fashion’s fabulous, like Oscar de la Renta and Yves Saint Laurent. Cornelia describes her fashion style as “Classic with a twist. I love a huge mix of everything! I suppose my go-to things for a party are Badgley Mischka or Carolina Herrera. I love Alaia. I love going to Target. I’m into Bloomingdale’s. I think Rag and Bone are the greatest jeans in the world.” In revealing her handbag’s contents, she’s not too shy to offer up a little product placement. “Inside my Cornelia Guest handbag… (fumbles around) would be a Cornelia Guest wallet. I have some enzymes prescribed by my doctor…keys to my office…I have MAC Lustre Budding Love pale matte pink lipstick, some Pentel RSVP fine pens, MAC lip pencil in Dervish, a pair of gold Ray-Ban aviators, some Clean Well hand sanitizer, and MAC Partial to Pink cream sheen lip gloss.” Cornelia’s favorite Studio 54 moment? How about the farewell party for owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager on February 3, 1980 (the night before they went to jail for tax evasion). “I remember standing next to Halston on the fire escape on 53rd Street, looking down and seeing thousands of people up and down the street. It was amazing!” In calculating that Cornelia would have been well underage during those decadent Studio 54 days, I crack that she probably had no business being there that night. To which, with a rebellious smile in her voice, the socialite retorts, “I know. But I was.” G

She loves sports, plays basketball, and even has a court in her back yard. She bets the Superbowl (her Patriots lost, and Maria had to host a show in her bikini. In Times Square. In winter). One of her favorite restaurants is this joint in the Valley called Lido’s Pizza. She cooks—even grows her own vegetables. She’s no dummy—graduated from Emerson and authored the Ne w York Times bestseller T he Ever yGirl’s Guide to Life. She hangs with celebs like 50 Cent. She’s into WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) and, believe it or not, she’s even grappled in the ring herself. The only ding to her detriment is that she loves to laugh. What the hell’s wrong with that, you ask? You haven’t heard her laugh. But more on that later. All of which begs the question, why isn’t this angel married? “It’s funny, because we’re doing a docuseries/sitcom for Oxygen Network based on me and my family,” Maria shares from her makeup trailer at the Grove, where she co-host’s Extra, the entertainment news show. “And this is just one of those obviously big questions in my life that they want to discuss. It’s interesting because I just… don’t…know.” Sure, she may not be married, but for all intents and purposes, she might as well be. For fourteen years she’s been with boyfriend Keven Undergaro, who, of all of her blessings, she nicely places at the top. “When I met Keven we wanted to get married, but it wasn’t the right time and we didn’t pursue it—obviously. And now, it’s been so long—like two common-law marriages long. It’s not something I yearn for or feel like I’m missing. We feel married. We’ll do it at some point, maybe when we’re serious about having kids.” Maria pauses to reflect for a moment, “Or maybe we won’t. Maybe we never will.” But does she want kids? “I would love to. I’m trying to figure out when that fits into my life.
Between the fear of not having children, which people definitely have instilled in me, since I’m 34, and they say it’s hard to have children after 35. These things are hovering over me.” If you really want to get under this girl’s skin, tell her she can’t do something. “When I get overwhelmed and get uber-busy, I get stressed. Stress equals the one word I hate: can’t.” It’s the ‘I’m so busy. I’m so stressed. I just can’t take this on. I just can’t do this.’ I hate being in that position, and I dislike how fragile I get in those moments. I also hate when people tell me ‘you can’t.’ If you say I can’t, then I’m definitely going to do it.” Maria’s ‘Don’t tell me what I can’t do’ fingersnap attitude and her love of/addiction to TV motivated her to launch Afterbuzz TV—her own online network that broadcasts after-shows of favorites like Breaking Bad, Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, Madness, Keeping up with the Kardashians—similar to what Andy Cohen does with the House wives where the show’s stars come on to rip apart the other cast members. “We have about 40 hours of programming a week and about 200 hosts who I’m breaking into the business. It’s grown so fast! We have over five million downloads per week from 75 countries all over the world.” Then there was Dancing with the Stars, the celebrity dancing competition, where she and pro dance partner Derek Hough gyrated their sexiness all the way to the semi-finals. When it was over, depression set in. “Between the depression, missing the show, and the exhaustion, I went down to the ocean by myself and just took some time to reflect and feel the sun and just relax. It’s been a wonderful summer. Amanda, our beautiful fashion editor, asked me to work as the wardrobe stylist on a film she’s producing. So off we went to shoot in London, Paris, and Italy —and had a ball. While in London, I ran into Phillip Treacy, the renowned hat designer (Who could forget his hats at the Royal wedding earlier this year?). One in particular, the one worn by Princess Beatrice, caused quite a stir. Phillip and I sipped Champagne mimosas on a sunny afternoon in his Chelsea Atelier garden as he recounted his meeting the Queen the night before at a jubilee function. While in Paris, I also ran into the incredibly creative John Galliano. We had fun catching up. Despite his unfortunate tirade, for which he seems genuinely remorseful, I have so much respect for his work. Now it’s time to snap up some fall men’s fashion items! Remember, it’s not always necessary to go all-out—just a few pieces can do the trick. For example, this season grab a pair of leather pants that will work well with your existing wardrobe. My favorite example for fall is a coat. I like to wear coats

as opposed to jackets. Guys, you can even wear your t-shirts and jeans, but throw on a great coat and transform your look in one swift decision and look wonderful. f you’re one of the six people left who think that online dating is weird and shameful, then maybe you need to read this most of all. Firstly, no one is ever “too old” for online dating. Online dating is simply dating made easier. You don’t have to make awkward small talk with anyone. It’s like shopping. You see what you like and you move on. And it can be great for your self-esteem. So here are some tips that I’ve gathered from my own experience. Maybe we can all learn something. DON’T take that whole “about me/self-summary” section too seriously. No one really wants to know everything about you right now. Write down what you think the five most important things to know about you are. Then throw that list away. DON’T give us a list of things. I don’t mean in the OKCupid section where it says “the six things I could never do without,” I mean in the general favorites or likes/dislikes section. I don’t want to read a wall of text that’s a list of movies or bands. Which is more interesting? “My favorite bands are The Beatles, The White Stripes, Kings of Leon, Nina Simone, The Animals, The Who, Ke$ha, Bob Dylan, Gotye, The Supremes, The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, Robyn, and The Drifters.” or... “I like mostly 60s rock and am not ashamed to admit that I have a weakness for pop music like Ke$ha. I know, I know. I’ll make a great argument for her over drinks.” The first one is a list that could have come from anyone, and the second is a description that has personality in it and a potential talking point. DON’T upload fewer than three photos. Sorry if this is news to you, but appearance counts. That doesn’t mean that every man has to look like Jon Hamm and that every woman has to look like Charlize Theron. Because some women prefer Zach Galifanakis and some men prefer Ellen Paige. What it means is that no one is going to interact with someone who doesn’t
even have a photo or who has only two. Would you rather someone meet you in person and be surprised and disappointed with how you really look because all you posted was your professionally touched-up headshot? Also, DON’T use your headshot as your profile photo. It’s cheesy! No one looks like a blemish-free, easygoing person glancing up at the camera against a bright wall all the time. DON’T continue to send messages if your first one is ignored. Give someone at most a week to get back to you, and if they don’t, move on. If you’re going to date online, or hell, in general, you can’t take rejection personally. If you do, you’ll go mad. Just let it go. You want to be with someone who actually wants to be with you. DON’T use “lol” or any kind of emoticon in your profile. You can save that for messaging if you must. Putting it out there in your profile makes you look like a twelve-year-old on MySpace. If you’re telling us something and you’re not sure if we can tell it’s a joke, either make the decision to leave it there and if they don’t get it, they’re not for you anyway, or make it a very obvious joke without letting us know to “lol.” You don’t need it, trust me. DON’T post any photos of you taking a picture of yourself in a mirror. Do I really need to explain this one? Now go out there and just try it, just a little bit. You might be surprised.

What’s your favorite getaway? I believe anything can be a getaway...even having friends over for dinner is an escape for me! But of course I love traveling— anywhere, really. Q+A: MAXMARA MUSE AND INTERIOR DESIGNER NINA FREUDENBERGER What do you appreciate most about MaxMara? So many things. I love that MaxMara is still a family-run business. I’m always so excited to see the new collection; the pieces are incredibly classic and beautifully tailored. I also think that the brand is perfect for the working professional woman. The ability to shift from day to evening is something which I think is unique in the world of fashion. What’s your personal fashion style? My style reflects my love of fabrics, patterns and color combinations, right in line with my profession! I find myself leaning toward unusual colors, layering collections/seasons for something unexpected. I love combining something utilitarian and something shiny in every outfit I wear. How does fashion play a part in your design world? I think having the ability to express oneself, confidence in one’s decisions, and feeling inspired occurs in both my fashion and design. What projects are you currently working on? We’re working on homes in LA, residences in NYC and the Hamptons, and a project in London. A
few months ago my good friends and I took off for Maui to celebrate the 31st Annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival. Held every year at the prestigious Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, it’s the oldest foodfest in the U.S. We stayed at The Outrigger Kapalua Villas—a stunning resort overlooking emerald fairways and sheltered bays on Maui’s northwest coast. It was heaven! The welcoming reception was held at Merriman’s Kapalua. For over twenty years Chef Peter Merriman has been a culinary pioneer in Hawaii. Hailed by The Los Angeles Times as “the Pied Piper of Hawaii Regional Cuisine,” he’s the original ‘locavore’—devoted to using locally grown and raised foods. The gorgeous ocean views and infinite blue skies keep you fixated for hours. It turned out to be the perfect location to kick off an activity-filled weekend: cooking demonstrations with celebrity chefs, tasting of premium Spanish wines, cocktail receptions and more. I particularly enjoyed the seafood part of the festival, which featured culinary delights from Hawaii’s most prominent chefs. I was really looking forward to indulging in some savory Hawaiian delicacies, but to my surprise, one of my favorites was Merriman’s white-chocolate-filled Malasadas dessert. Malasadas come in a brown bag that your server shakes up to give a nice, even coat of powdered sugar, then you dip them in a little pot of Maui Oma Coffee caramel dipping sauce. Mmmm! Malasadas are very traditional to the island. They came to Hawaii with the Portuguese immigrants who worked on the plantations in the early 1900s. And they are dangerously exquisite. Oenophiles, gourmands and enthusiasts of the good life will definitely enjoy the festivities and fall in love with the serenity of the resort. Maybe I’ll see you next year! Aloha!

Q+A with Chef Peter Merriman When did you know you wanted to be a chef? Ever since I was a small kid, and I could never satisfy my appetite. You’re known for being the first chef in Hawaii to go to local ranchers and farmers to source your menu and get local products. What challenges did that present? Originally there wasn’t enough fresh supply, so we had to encourage farmers to grow vegetables and produce. Locally grown produce just tastes better. Our biggest challenge now is helping ranchers stay in business. We would like to see Hawaii raise pheasants and chickens. Additionally, we would like to see the state’s dairy business grow. Did you learn anything new/interesting at this year’s Festival? I learned how much I love Gary Pisoni’s Pinot. What’s your signature dish? Dessert? Wok-Charred Ahi and Merriman’s Chocolate Purse Dessert Favorite fruit? Lilikoi (also known as Passion Fruit) Favorite vegetable? Pohole fern (wild Hawaiian Fern) Favorite aroma? When I’m riding my bike and a pineapple truck drives by. Red wine or white? Yes and yes! Is there something you won’t eat? Ake—raw bull liver. Dying to eat? Ceviche while vacationing in Rio. What are the biggest misconceptions people have about chefs? That they are sane and that they don’t drink that much.

I try to create food memory: when we eat something really good it creates one of our strongest memories. Best place for spices and seasonings? Penzey’s has top-of-the-line spices. I believe you should stay true to the cuisine you’re cooking. I love India’s Sweets and Spices for traditional Indian spice mixes. Favorite Los Angeles dining Sushi Sushi on Beverly Drive near Olympic. It’s not well known, but hand-over fist. It’s the best sushi restaurant in LA. The flavor profiles are amazing. I also like Pizzeria Mozza and Son of a Gun—it’s fun, playful and eccentric, and exactly what Angelenos want to eat right now. How can a home cook become a Top Chef in their own kitchen? Don’t force creativity. Buy from the Farmer’s Market. Recipes are only as good as your ingredients. Create meals around what’s fresh at that moment. Let the food tell you what the menu is going to be. Where do you find inspiration? Our customers inspire me. I like to know what piques their interest. The farmer’s markets and the pride the farmers take in their produce is inspirational. I also look to other cooks, history books, and restaurants.

I’m using vinegars in place of salt and pepper. I’m also using an atomizer to mist acidity on top of a dish. It creates a taste that puckers on your tongue. Best places to buy knives? Japanese Knife Imports in Venice sells good knives. Mutual Trading Company is also a good resource. I also like Shun knives.

For ethnic food I like Dosa Place – it’s Indian cuisine. We have great drinks on offer at Charlie Palmer at Bloomingdale’s South Coast Plaza. And The Bazaar in LA has some great cocktails. Newest ingredient to spice up your food? Fennel Pollen—lots of flavor with a little bit of sweetness. How can a home cook become a Top Chef in their own kitchen? Buy Bryan and Michael Voltaggio’s cookbook, Volt Ink. My advice for cooking at home is to choose a theme, then present a really impressive main-course centerpiece and then incorporate two or three simple sides to complete the meal. Where do you find inspiration? Everywhere. I travel daily from one city to another across the U.S., so it could be from passing by food trucks, strolling through the green market, aromas from other restaurants, or dinner at a friend’s house.

What food trends are over? Raw-food diet. The Paleo Diet and eating low-fat. Science is proving that a healthy diet consists of eating the right kinds of carbs in the proper amount.

Known for their extensive selection of caviar, they offer classes to educate people on the delicacy. Open with the Heirloom Tomato Salad, try the crispy chicken, and finish with the restaurant’s signature bread pudding. Delicious! Other winners are the beet salad and the Veal Milanese. SOTTO Located in the basement of a Pico brownstone, Sotto looks like it would be more at home on New York Street at Fox Studio’s backlot, just down the boulevard. The restaurant occupies the same space where Test Kitchen entertained us back in 2010. Some of LA’s best chefs opened shop here for brief stints behind the grill, including Walter Manzke and Michael Voltaggio. The final residents were Orange County’s Steve Samson and Zach Pollack. The OC duo liked it so much they decided to stay and reopen under the Sotto banner. Zach insists they didn’t win any contests; they just liked the vibe. And what a vibe they have. The bar is alive with Westsiders, appetizers, and creative spirits after dark. Come early and ask drinkmaster Nick Meyer to shake up a $12 Bartender’s Choice cocktail before dinner. You call the spirit, he does the rest. The kitchen is southern Italian, from Naples down to Sicily, and it’s fully equipped with a wood-fired oven that finds constant use. We ordered the Guanciale Pizza. This miracle of house-cured pork cheek and soft southern Italian pizza dough came out of the oven leopard-spotted and smoky good. Also tried and recommended are the Peppers al Forno appetizer, Warm Octopus Salad, and the Casarecce, a braised lamb ragu. Sotto brings hearty southern Italian to the table with balance and poise.
The wine list is packed with gems from unfamiliar grapes, made by unfamiliar producers. Consumerunfriendly? Not at all. Ask for Rory Harrington, the wine captain. He’ll take you through a tableside crash course on southern Italian wine tasting. It’s fun and enlightening. When our savory courses arrived, Rory came back with reds to sample. My favorite of the night was a bold 2009 Al-Cantara, from grapes grown on the slopes of volcanic Mt. Etna. If you want to bring your own wine, the corkage fee is generous.
