GenLUX
W
elcome to the spring/summer fashion+architecture+interior design–themed issue of Genlux. Remarkably, the first quarter of 2011 is already behind us, and life shows few signs of slowing down. Good or bad, the entire world has accelerated at an unprecedented pace, and the information that transfers through our internet is predominately responsible—or, in the eyes of certain dictators, partially to blame. Fashion is no different. Almost as they happen, whether you’re on your phone, iPad, computer, or whatever, you can access all the fashion shows of any of the fashion weeks around the world. You’re able to see which collections you’ll buy this fall, wait to go on sale, or avoid altogether—as quickly as the buyers. Right now, some exciting Spring 2 fashion and accessories are hitting the shelves of the high-end department stores. One of my favorites is Hermès’ newest garden perfume, Un Jardin sur le Toit. In early March, I was invited by the house of Hermès to a very intimate gathering at the Betsy hotel in South Beach, Miami, where they unveiled the new fragrance. The Hermès team went all out and decorated the roof of the hotel to resemble the roof garden at 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré, their mother-

ship store in Paris. The winds were high, but the weather was warm—a perfect time to be in Miami. Add the ocean view, and the whole experience became very surreal and unforgettable. This is the season to rediscover the harmony of the aquas, blues and greens of the Mediterranean. Fulfill your need to escape by slipping into the Grecian Goddess gown by Alberta Ferretti (p.116). You’ll be instantly transported to the island of Mykonos. Don’t believe me? Try one on! White is also a huge trend. I’m in love with Badgley Mischka’s long white draped gown— simple, yet expensive (p.118). Makes me want to get married! Well, almost. As with most women, jewelry is one of my favorite accessories. I’m obsessed with Harry Winston’s ruby and diamond cluster earrings (p.28). They are beyond beautiful—so delicate and elegant. This issue, our beautiful cover girl is the always positive and gorgeous Petra Nemcova, photographed by worldclass shooter Marc Baptiste. Petra has survived great adversity to become a stronger human being—determined to help others in need. Prepare to be inspired! Bisous à tous!

It’s no wonder that celebrity favorite Badgley Mischka chose coveted Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills for its new two-level flagship store. The impressive space boasts 2,800 square feet, a grand staircase, and the brand’s couture, bridal, and ready-to-wear lines. The opening took place on March 2, and was hosted by Rumer Willis, the new star of Badgley Mischka’s spring/summer marketing campaign. In attendance at the invitation-only cocktail reception were Brenda Song, Audrina Patridge and Lo Bosworth.

By STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER
oan Severance settles into the makeshift makeup chair. All around are sleek, shining examples of modern Minotti furniture. Mary Ta, the owner, has graciously opened her doors for our shoot. It’s Joan’s first editorial shoot in, well, decades. She talks about her beginnings in the modeling industry and shares some shocking revelations.
“I
had no interest in becoming a model. None. My mother pushed me to do it.” Joan, now 52, confides with her slight Texas accent, “In high school, I was 5’ 9” and weighed all of 90 pounds. It wasn’t a pretty sight. I was all hair, all eyes, and stick-skinny.” John Casablancas, founder of Elite Models, saw a photo of Joan that her mother submitted and invited her to Paris. So in 1977, then only 18, Joan’s on a jet with her matching blue Samsonite luggage. “Believe me, on this trip, I went from Ms. Naïve Texas to Ms. Don’t F With Me in just a few weeks.” The trip would open her eyes to modeling’s glamour as well as what was, at that time, its darker side. “Kim Acee takes me to a party with these guys she’d just met. In walks this man with four women on his arm. He appears to be very important. The next day I get an invitation at my hotel from this same man to be his date for Sophia Loren’s 40th birthday dinner at L’Orangerie. It sounded exciting, so I went. So we go to dinner, get a table, and sure enough, in waltzes Omar Sharif and Sophia Loren. I don’t remember if I said a word.” Then Joan drops a bomb. Just a few days later, on her first job, where she meets Eric Milon, whom she would one day marry, “I get a message from John Casablancas saying, ‘Urgent! Urgent! Don’t do anything! Call me right away!’ So I call him and he demands that Eric bring me to him immediately. John made me privy to the white-slave trade with models. He laid it all out. I had a thousand questions. He said, ‘This is these people, this is what they do, this is how they do it, and this is what happens.’ Then he went on to say, ‘Those people you recently met came to your hotel and tried to move you out of there.’ I was shocked. Luckily, I never saw or heard from any of those people again and, fortunately, went on to have a pretty successful modeling career.” Over the next eight years, Joan became one of the 70s supermodels. “I got to shoot with Arthur Elgort, Steven Meisel, Phillip Dixon, Greg Gorman, Marco Glaviano, Helmet Newton, Renato Grignaschi, Richard Avedon, Francesco Scavullo, Bill King, Albert Watson, Mark Abrahams, Matthew Rolston, and so many more.”
On a shoot for Richard Avedon, then the biggest photographer, “Rosie Vela and I were booked together, but she never showed up. It was a half-day booking and I’m ready to go to my next shoot, when in walks Rosie. But then Avedon gets really upset at me for leaving, even though Rosie was late. Maybe that’s why I never worked with him again.” Her favorite was Arthur Elgort. “He would point out which direction your face looked best in. He taught me to always have a thought going on in my head so he could capture it in my eyes. He told me my face was best with a 105mm lens. I still remember that. I learned so much from him. One day he shot me with psychologist Arthur Janoff, writer of Primal Scream for French Vogue. He was just so fascinating; you couldn’t get me unglued from the conversation. And you can see the intensity of the moment in the photo. It was my favorite shoot.” Then there’s the story of her worst shoot. “It was my birthday and I had a job with photographer Barry McKinley. I got up early and I’m slicing up a papaya, and I slice the tip of my finger off ! So I go to the emergency room to get my finger sewn back on. The phone rings and it’s Barry and he reams me for not showing up. I felt so horrible because I couldn’t make it, and also because my finger was chopped off ! He had nothing nice to say. He said the next time he was in the neighborhood, if he could use my toilet, he’d love to. I didn’t know what that meant. I still don’t. I never spoke to him again.” Joan never had children, though she does admit her clock ticked when she was 36. “So I put it out there to about twelve guys: ‘Hey, how about having a kid together? We don’t have to have a relationship. 50/50 custody without the battle.’ I even called up my ex, Eric. He never returned my phone call. Then I considered adoption. In the end, I talked myself out of it.” The Genlux crew erupts in the customary end-of-shoot applause, and some of the girls who work at Minotti come to get closer look at Joan’s beautiful, bright blue eyes. Joan smiles and says, “Wow! I had such a blast! It was one of my best shoots. It was so much fun. It’s good to be back.” G

Once best-known for gracing the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue in 2003, Petra Nemcova became better known for surviving the 2004 Thailand tsunami that tragically took the life of her then fiancé, photographer Simon Atlee. Recently, we became reaquainted with her as a contestant on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ and now, as Stephen Christopher finds, the supermodel is focused on being known for the most important role of her life.

S P
upermodel Petra Nemcova stretches her svelte 5-foot 9-inch frame, leaps high, and nails a 9.2 swan dive into the pool. A collective gasp rises from the Genlux crew. Then, before she’s even broken the surface of the water, photographer Marc Baptiste yells out, “Oh, no! Didn’t get the shot! Didn’t get the shot! Do it again.”
etra is that supermodel, the one whose name you may not recognize but whose story you probably do. She’s the model who survived one of the worst natural disasters in history—the tsunami that hit Thailand in 2005. Tragically, of the 230,000 who perished in the catastrophe, one was her then fiancé, photographer Simon Atlee. Ironically, just a few months prior, Petra, who had started modeling at 15 in her native Czech Republic, was celebrated in the news for landing the coveted Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue cover. “It was early morning, the day after Christmas. We were in a bungalow, and in a few seconds, the entire bungalow was swept to the sea,” Petra recounts at the Genlux photo shoot high above Los Angeles. “My pelvis was broken and I was drowning. I caught a palm tree and held on. It was so painful. A man came to rescue me but he couldn’t lift me on his own, so he left. I didn’t know if he was ever going to come back. But he did. The support not only of the men who helped me, but of the entire world, was so incredible.” In some ways a blessing, the tsunami was the impetus for Petra to pursue another passion in life: helping children. “As soon as I could walk again, my friends and I went back to Thailand to see how we could help. We went to shelters and hospitals and temporary schools and witnessed the needs that remained after the first-responders left.” Seeing a pressing need to rebuild the schools, Petra founded the Helping Hearts Fund foundation to help in areas ravaged by natural disasters. In only five years, with help from corporate partners like Hewlett-Packard, which provides all of the computers for the schools, ING, which gives financial support, and DLA Piper (one of the world’s top ten law firms), which supplies all of the fund’s legal advice, Petra Nemcova’s Happy Hearts Fund has already built an astounding fifty schools and kindergartens in nine countries around the world. As positive as that news is, there’s even more encouraging news: Happy Hearts Fund claims zero administrative costs—so every penny of every dollar donated goes
to helping the children. Petra’s board underwrites all the rest. “It started with two people with a pure passion to make a difference. Now we have nine employees and 250 volunteers. Plus, we have the employees of our partners— so over 700 people are helping!” To help her lead more effectively, Petra decided to go back to college, and in 2008, entered Cambridge University in England. “I learned to lead the foundation as a business—to have good corporate governances, strategic marketing and decision-making. It’s been an amazing journey, and each day is full of learning.” Last night was a bittersweet one for Petra. She was voted off the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ TV competition she’d been doing so well on. She was visibly moved. On the one hand, the show was great for bringing awareness to her cause, but it also took an immense amount of time away from her good work. “The response we received for the charity through the show was amazing. People had Dance-a-thons and ‘Dancing with the Stars’ viewing parties to help raise money!” About a year ago, Petra found love again. He is Jamie Belman, a British actor. What does she love most about him? “Way too many things,” she gushes. “The best way to describe it is that he is beyond my expectations and wishes.” She continues, “You never know where life will take you—that’s the beauty of it, but in the coming years I hope that we will start a family and that in about three years there will be at least a hundred schools built through Happy Hearts.” When asked whether she has a fear of water, Petra becomes pensive and her voice gets thinner. “After the tsunami I did have a fear of water, so the first thing I did when I went back to Thailand was to go scuba diving. I was very afraid to go back to the sea, but I knew I had to do it. During those first few moments under the water, the memories came right back and were very frightening. But I kept telling myself, ‘You have to do this!’ And do you know, it was the first and only time that I’ve seen sea horses. It was so beautiful,” she says, clearing her throat. “I try to face my fears.” G

GENLUX EDITOR AT LARGE
BREATHLESS—GEORGE BLODWELL Being Genlux’s editor at large means I have the opportunity to experience many wonderful things. This month I attended the opening of the new Tom Ford store on Rodeo Drive. The array of luxurious items left me breathless. Everywhere I turned I saw beautifully made desirables for men: tuxedo jackets, suits, bags, shirts, walking sticks, shaving accessories, crocodile belts, and shoes. The air of quality is unmistakable. Tom, as you know, is responsible for reinvigorating Gucci before doing his own label, and his Tom Ford women’s collection left me no less awestruck. Vivienne Westwood also just came to town to open her new

boutique on Melrose. She is the epitome of an English eccentric. What an eye this lady has! I love her men’s collection with her signature peak wide lapels and detailing. She makes the best corset-inspired tops and gowns. All in all, I found the new store inviting and exciting. Genluxers, you have two new stores to check out and enjoy—I certainly did. Here are some other good ideas to jazz up your spring/ summer looks. I love the green in the Prada examples—check out those shoes. The Demeulemeester fencing jacket is extremely flattering and very cool, while the suede shirt from Dolce & Gabbana is a timeless keeper. TYPED (PART 2)—ALMIE ROSE
D
O YOU BELIEVE IN HAVING A CERTAIN TYPE WHEN IT COMES TO DATING AND ATTRACTION? I DO. IT MAKES SENSE TO ME. YOU LIKE A CERTAIN TYPE OF MUSIC, OF FASHION, OF FOOD—SO WHY NOT SOMEONE YOU DATE?
Photo by Andrew Matusik; Dolls meticulously styled by: Dale Johnson / Artists by Timothy Priano
According to my friend Molly Lambert, my type is shaggy-haired boys who might be in popular VH1 bands. She has me pegged. How did I not see this? Can you identify your type, and if so, do you fight it? A lot of people want to deny their type. Perhaps it’s something inside themselves that makes them hesitant about admitting what they want. I believe that those we seek (whether it’s for friendship or more) are in some ways a reflection of ourselves. We don’t exist in a vacuum, unless you’re Patrick Bateman. If you’re Patrick Bateman, you’re probably not reading this, and that’s probably a good thing. When you go for your type, do you find it works out, or do you find yourself disappointed? I have another friend who tells me that it wasn’t until she dated outside her type that she found a deep love and connection. But, just maybe, that was her type all along! Inception. She suggests I try an experiment to date outside of my type. But where’s the fun in that? If I’m only attracted to a certain type of man, why fight it? Oh, right, because I wind up getting hurt every single time. So which is worse? Going after the kinds of people you’re interested in, even though those people usually wind up being toxic, or going after people you would never look at twice in hopes of being happy but with the strong possibility of winding up hopelessly bored and forcing a connection? Isn’t that just settling? I have to have hope that I’m going to meet the shaggy-haired VH1 rocker who isn’t going to make the mistakes that so many others made before him. It doesn’t mean that I have to
say no to anyone who wasn’t in Matchbox Twenty or Train, but it doesn’t mean that I should force something with someone I don’t spark with just for the sake of trying something different. A lot of women write to me, saying, “This guy likes me and he’s nice and he’s smart and kind of funny, but I don’t know, I think he looks a little like Yoda and he’s just not my type, but my friends say I should just go out with him and see what happens. Should I?” No. If you don’t want to, why should you? Going out on a date with Yoda is the definition of settling. People say I’m too harsh, that you have to sit down with people and talk to them and give them a chance for chemistry to develop. No. That’s how friendships develop. Not chemistry. You either feel something enough to explore or you don’t. If the guy won a Nobel Peace Prize and donates millions to orphans every week, that’s great, but it doesn’t mean you have to date him. He’s someone else’s type, not yours, and that’s fine! There is no point in settling, ever. Life is too short. There’s too much to do, too many people to meet, too many things to conquer. By all means, try something new, but make sure it’s not out of fear that you’re going to wind up alone. To quote Madonna, “Second best is never enough / you’ll do much better, baby, on your own.” It’s unfortunate that fear can be a great motivator. Be fearless. Don’t settle. Don’t fight your type, just be smart. And if you want to try something new, do it…but again, don’t do it out of fear or a sense of obligation to be nice. You don’t owe anyone anything, except yourself.

ello, sexpot!” is how 87-year-old Greta greets me before our interview. God, I love this woman. She embraces me and introduces me to Iris Riewer, her right-hand woman since the early 80s. Everyone who works for Greta is considered her family. We sit down to talk about the 50th anniversary of the Greta boutique, her other stores, her highs, her lows, her beautiful, crazy life. After all this time, how does she feel? “I’m happy,” she says. “Or I wouldn’t be here.” Is she going to settle down now, relax, and bask in her happiness? “Unfortunately, I have a bad habit.” She smiles. “I cannot relax. I love what I’m doing and I’m not going to give it up yet.” Her future decided, I ask her about her past. She in part attributes her tenacity and tough skin to growing up during WWII and being thrust into literal do-or-die situations. She left Austria only to wind up in England during the Blitz. She has a warm fierceness that always glows inside her. Does anything throw her? Has she ever been heartbroken? “No,” she says, without hesitation. “I think it’s just what I went through in my life.” She’s been with a man for thirty-seven years now, her favorite person, and also her future husband. That’s how Greta is. She’ll get married, but when she’s good and ready. “He finally talked me into it,” she laughs. What’s her secret to maintaining a long and happy relationship? “You have to have your own sense of independence,” she says. “And I’m a giver, too.” But the loves of her life will always be “my mom and my brother, who are long gone.” Family is important to Greta, so she created her own with her friends and employees and the people who have supported her throughout the years. “I didn’t have children because during the war I was in England with the bombs dropping, so I certainly didn’t have time for that,” she says matter-of-factly. “After the war it was tough times.” But out of it she created something wonderful: her career in fashion. She went to Italy and found a land of couture to work with. “The fashion was unbelievable.” It was the 1950s. Cut to a decade later when Greta is established in Los Angeles, with a store not only in Beverly Hills but also one right on the Sunset Strip. Rudi Gernreich, at the time an up-andcoming designer whom Greta fostered, had just created his infamous “topless swimsuit” that Greta proudly displayed in the store window. The Beach Boys, Pamela Courson (Jim
Morrison’s long-term companion) and other rock stars and LA’s coolest would flood her store. But during the Vietnam War things got crazy. Protestors would line the streets, which, unfortunately for Greta, happened right outside her store. Hippies would chain themselves to fire hydrants and refuse to move. “That’s when I knew we had to get out of there.” Times were definitely more liberating then. “We used to travel to Milan for business,” Iris says. “The hotel where we stayed was next to this well-known train station that was built by Mussolini. We’re in a taxi driving through town, and we’re looking at these beautiful Brazilian women, and it’s cold so they’re wearing fur coats. All of a sudden they open up their furs and they’re all transsexuals!” Greta laughs at the memory that makes the hippies in America look tame. Really, nothing shakes her. Not even when at one of her fabulous parties, her friend Eddie found himself the target of one of Greta’s poodles. Greta explains: “We had a party at the house and he had his caftan on and one of them did his business on his caftan. Eddie didn’t even notice, but when he did, he said in his accent, ‘Never mind, it’s just a little poopay!’” Now that’s a friend. Greta has good instincts, and when she decides something, she doesn’t question herself. People advised her against opening a store on the south side of Beverly Hills, saying that a high-end store would never make it there. Now Greta is the only high-end boutique still standing. Her current location was and is a long-time celebrity favorite. Ann-Margret was a frequent shopper in the sixties and seventies, as was Gilda Radner, for whom Greta personally designed a special New Year’s party dress. (Radner passed away a few months later.) One client, who was a big star in the forties, was a kleptomaniac. In the eighties. There was the time Candy Spelling came into the store dressed casually in sweats. The sales people were, well, less than attentive. One look at her flawless 10-karat ring, however, gave her away. “Don’t judge by what somebody’s wearing,” Iris had to later lecture her staff. Greta welcomes everyone, even if you’re not a member of a television dynasty. Minor bumps along the way are fine for Greta. “I have no regrets whatsoever,” she says. “Some things are meant to be. If you enjoy something, you’re successful. That’s my philosophy. That’s my way of life.” That, and the occasional stellar party.

DESIGNER PROFILE: XORIN BALBES
gENLUXshop Xorin Balbes has designed the interiors of some of LA’s landmark properties. Here, he shares with Genlux about his inspiration, his design philosophy, and his most ambitious project to date.

eet Xorin Balbes. Award-winning architectural conservator, lauded designer, philanthropist and co-owner of the architectural design firm TempleHome. His work has been extensively featured in Architectural Digest, Wallpaper, Traditional Home, and many others. He’s also been profiled on a variety of television shows such as Home and Garden and Entertainment Tonight. TempleHome recently conceived and designed Esquire magazine’s “Ultimate Bachelor Pad” as part of their Signature Spaces series. He is also co-founder of the nonprofit Global Vision for Peace, which launched at the 2002 Academy Awards. The organization’s mission is to create awareness and solutions for the burgeoning problem of homelessness, focusing on one person, one family at a time. He has also launched, in conjunction with the United Nations, initiatives promoting world peace and HIV/AIDS awareness of orphaned children in Africa, along with well-known artists and celebrities, including Drew Barrymore, Leonardo DiCaprio and Sharon Stone. Xorin’s vision is to weave his ideals of inner peace, beauty, passion, and restoration into all of his work with the intent of inspiring others to live more soulful and compassionate lives. How did you get started in design? I started my interior design career in Montecito thirteen years ago when I bought my first house to renovate. When I was done, I realized that I had found my passion. What is your design philosophy? It’s based what I call SoulSpace— an eight-step design process through which I connect with the soul and essence of the client as well as the soul and essence of the property they live in. The eight steps are Assess, Release, Cleanse, Dream, Discover, Create, Elevate, and Celebrate. What is your design inspiration? I see myself more as a facilitator, bringing design elements together from the client’s vision, from the architectural detail of the property, and from my sensibility about how to blend everything. What are some of your favorite projects? My absolute favorite is the Sowden House. Also, the Norma Talmadge Villa was a very exciting project because it involved taking this over-the-top 1929 mansion and grounding it into the 21st century while honoring its historic nature. Also, the Esquire Ultimate Bachelor Pad on Doheny Drive in West Hollywood is a modern ground-up design and build which incorporated art deco architectural details. What are you working on now? Several renovation projects. One in particular is a house we brought all the way down to the studs to reinterpret the architectural design into a warm, contemporary masterpiece—a very unique boutique and retreat in Makawao, Maui. We heard that Sowden House might be on the market. Is this true?
Yes it is, because we’re opening TempleHome offices, a boutique dormitory, and retreat on Maui. So I’ll be spending less time in LA while overseeing our projects there. My partner, Norm Wogan, will be handling most of the business in LA and on the East Coast. Those interested in purchasing Sowden House should contact Andrew Morrison at Sotheby’s Realty.

JEREMY DAVIESBARBALA, SR.CREATIVE DIRECTOR, SASSOON SALON, BEVERLY HILLS
The best products to assist with styling at home are Kérastase Ciment Thermique and Kérastase Elixir Ultime. Ultime Apply Ciment Thermique before the blow-dry, and then finish with one pump of Elixir Ultime to create a chic, versatile end result. Though products are a key element for completing a look, it is really important to invest in a strong foundation with a quality cut. If you receive a cut that is suitable for your face shape, bone structure, and hair texture, you should be able to easily replicate your look once you leave the salon.—Jeremy Davies-Barbala salon.— HOW TO:
“IN DEMI-MONDE, THE COLOR PALETTE CONSISTS OF MUTED BRONZE, COPPER AND CARBONIZED STEEL TONES TO CREATE MODERN, MONOCHROMATIC COLOR that is fresh and ready
for spring. The key is to work within the family of tones that your hair naturally takes on when exposed to the sun. Not everyone can wear every color—hair color should be formulated to suit each person.” —Jeremy Davies-Barbala

Designer Jean-Claude Ellena takes us on a garden journey to experience his latest fragrance—Un Jardin Sur Le Toit —Samia Arslane
L
JeanClaude Ellena: The passionate perfumer
ike Lady Gaga’s song Born this Way, JeanClaude Ellena was definitely born with a talent that few people possess. A visionary, he does things like nobody else. In the course of his olfactory journeys, he’s discovered, or I should say created, the “tea note,” and has concocted more than a hundred fragrances since. Roof Garden is his 18th fragrance since he’s been with Hermès. In early March, I was invited by the house of Hermès to attend a very intimate presentation unveiling the new garden perfume, Un Jardin Sur Le Toit (Roof Garden) at the Betsy Hotel in South Beach, Miami. They went all out, decorating the hotel roof to resemble the roof garden at 24 Faubourg Saint Honoré, their mothership store in Paris. Two workshops were set up for guests to experience the making of this fragrance. The first was led by well-known French chef Georges Berger. We all put on our Hermès aprons and learned to bake an apple tart (apple is one of the ingredients used for the perfume). Then we moved on to a table where delicate roses were waiting for us to transplant them into bigger pots. All this was meant for us to understand the fragrance and the journey Jean-Claude experienced to create his Jardin—a delightful mix of florals, sweet apples, and pears. Delicious! Jean-Claude Ellena isn’t daunted by challenges, but always thrives to be unique. When asked if there will ever be a partnership between the house of Hermès and a celebrity, he became very agitated and shouted, “Oh, non! Jamais!” This is not the motto of the house. A perfumer’s place, he will tell you, is everywhere and nowhere. Heaven Scent
Hermès recreated their rooftop garden right in South Beach.

HOW DO YOU CARRY YOUR LOOK OVER FROM SPRING TO SUMMER? “I think for spring,
cheeks and lips are more of a stain-blotted color. Benefit’s PosieTint is great for both cheeks and lips. Soft, baby-pink color gives a pop of vividness while looking springtime fresh. Darker-skinned gals go for Benefit’s classic BeneTint. To move to summer I love to add a touch of warm dewiness. On cheeks, NARS Super Orgasm Illuminator comes in one skinflattering shade: apricot with a slight golden opal shine. For lips, you can sweep a touch of gold gloss over your favorite spring shade to give it a slightly sultry naughtiness. I love YSL’s Golden Gloss in Simply Gold. T
Isla del Encanto Our SAMIA ARSLANE heads to Puerto Rico for a little rest and relaxation and also gets a lesson in the Spanish Colonial architectural-style.
he St. Regis Bahia Beach, Resort Puerto Rico is a spectacular and inspiring property with two miles of idyllic private beach between the Espíritu Santo River State Preserve and the lush El Yunque National Rain Forest. The Hill Glazier architects were inspired by the island’s signature Spanish Colonial style. They incorporated local Puerto Rican heritage to celebrate its culture in the architecture and décor. To harmonize the guest experience, the accommodations are designed in a low-rise plantation-style to help bring in the exquisite surroundings and verdant nature. Throughout the resort are numerous artworks created by local Puerto Rican artists. As for the hotel’s spa, director Nicole Miller describes it as “A tranquil oasis set amidst a lush
tropical garden.” The Remède Spa is the ideal space to luxuriate the special treatments. Latticecovered walkways and private spa cabanas flank the pools of water surrounded by the lush gardens. The elements merge for the ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation experience.” The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort sets new standards of service and luxury for Puerto Rico. The staff is pleasant and helpful. For instance, on my last day, I was chatting with a waiter at the pool restaurant and mentioned to him that I really enjoyed the local food, but was disappointed because I didn’t get a chance to try the dessert. To my surprise, this nice waiter came back carrying a tray with what looked like rice pudding in a martini glass. Delicioso! Fortunately, I was leaving the next day, otherwise I would have been asking for it every day.

Genlux Out-of-Towner
She’s been called “the embodiment of CHANEL”—the type of woman who probably rolls out of bed looking stunning, could throw on anything and appear innately chic and, well, very French. But though her beauty may be effortless, Ines de la Fressange’s work ethic is certainly not. Born in Gassin, Var, France, de la Fressange began her career as a model in the eighties. She worked with designers like Kenzo, Mugler and Lacroix, and in 1983 signed on exclusively as Karl Lagerfeld’s muse for CHANEL. Her relationship with the fashion house would last seven years and establish her as an icon—so much so that she would pose for the bust of Marianne, the symbol of France. In 1994 she launched her first collection, and ten years later would join forces with Bruno Frisoni as brand ambassador for Roger Vivier. She made her stunning return to the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier’s 2009 Couture show, and graced CHANEL’s spring 2011 campaign once again with Lagerfeld at the helm. She is currently the energy behind Roger Vivier and author of the forthcoming book Parisian Chic: A Style Guide by Ines de la Fressange. The book has already met with adoring success in France and will launch in the U.S. next month. —By Courtney Fortune
Neighborhoods: I love to walk around Robertson, sections of Melrose and friends’ gardens! Times of year: Any time of year, but I love LA even more when it’s cold and rainy in Paris. ON AND OFF THE PLANE:
What’s in your carry-on? A cashmere blanket, an iPod with music chosen with my daughters, photos of my loved ones, moisturizer, Vivier perfume and water. What are your packing essentials for LA? Sunglasses, white cropped jeans, a white shirt, some T-shirts, a navy blue sweater (the color makes you look more rested; it fits all situations and it looks neat) and Roger Vivier flats or ballerinas.

What’s the first thing you do to unwind? Drink fresh carrot juice.
WHERE DO YOU…
Stay in LA? For several days, the Chateau Marmont; for a quick business trip, the Beverly Wilshire. Have drinks? The garden at the Chateau. For the incredible view, the Soho House. FAVORITES:
Shops: Fred Segal, Opening Ceremony, Kitson, Maxfield, but also JF Chen and Roger Vivier at Neiman Marcus. Restaurant: The Tower Bar, Dimitri and Lucques Museums: MOCA and, of course, the Getty Beach: Point Dume is really beautiful and private. I love walking at low tide.

How do you make your hotel room feel more like home? Foin Coupé or Cyprès candles from Dyptique and some fresh flowers. Red-eye or morning flight? If I’m traveling to Paris, red-eye is the only option; if going to NY, morning flight! How do you look refreshed after a long flight? I take a nap. But if I don’t have time, I just take a shower and drink plenty of water. Sometimes that works just as well. What do you wish LA had more of that you have in Paris? When I’m in LA I wish for more time to relax and sightsee with my daughters. What do you wish Paris had that LA has? Amazing weather and light.
