I
t’s going to be a colorful summer! Colorblocking is one of the hugest trends this season, and I am thrilled because I love color! If you’re shy or not so sure about it, I advise you to start with a white or a neutraltone item—whether it’s a pant or a skirt—and then pair it with a colorful piece like the gorgeous pink Christian Dior belted jacket (p107). Or be bold and wear that sumptuous green cocktail dress by Jil Sander (p107) to a romantic dinner. In every issue I have my favorite things, and in this issue I’m obsessed with Vertu’s new Constellation Quest Carbon Fibre smartphone (p28). To me—and to the entire fashion world—the beginning of summer also means that Paris Haute Couture Week is
20 GENLUX SUMMER 2011
around the corner. It is said that there are only 200 or so couture clients worldwide—that’s right, only 200 people can afford these clothes. Nevertheless, the whole world is watching to see designers such as Lagerfeld demonstrate their skills in enviable surroundings. Last year, under the glass roof of Paris’s Palais Royal, fashion house CHANEL unveiled a spectacular and glitzy show highlighting the opulence of Romanov Russia. I can’t wait to discover what they have in store for us this year. We’re thrilled to have the beautiful Angie Harmon gracing our Summer cover. Enjoy the season, and don’t forget your spf !
Bisous à tous!

Genlux toasted the launch of its Spring/Summer issue with a glamorous party at the Luxe Hotel on Rodeo Drive. Guests lounged rooftop while sipping on concoctions by Dolce Touch Vodka, One Hope Wine and Hansen’s sodas. SmartWater, Coca-Cola, and Nutra Resveratrol anti-aging water provide non-alcoholic libations. Thanks to Voluspa candles, the most common phrase of the evening was “It smells so good in here!” DJs Luxury Kills set a soundtrack that got guests dancing, while others hammed it up taking pictures at the photobooth.

There was a lot to celebrate as Chaz Dean launched the grand re-opening of his newly designed studios by hosting the Genlux issue party in the beautiful space. The redesign was featured on Bravo’s “Flipping Out.” The designer, Jeff Lewis, and the entire crew were in attendance. The night’s special guest, Genlux cover girl Petra Nemcova, looked stunning in Avakian jewelry. Her charity, Happy Hearts Fund, rebuilds schools for children around the world. The event benefited the fund with a live auction. The wonderful items included stays at Mandarin Oriental hotels in Las Vegas and Miami, front-row New York Fashion Week tickets to sit with Petra—and even the Gucci dress she wore to the event! As guests departed, they were given gift bags that included gift certificates from event sponsor Dan Deutsch Optical Outlook and Chaz Dean’s Wen products.

t may not be the most comfortable feeling in the world when the temperature soars into the high 90s and the humidity level is equally ghastly, but when you consider that the ocean temp is a bathtub-warm 86 degrees, and you’re in your Louis Vuitton swimwear, who cares? Besides, you’re in Miami for a little rest, relaxation and, believe it or not, some sophisticated elegance at the only Five-Diamond hotel

84 GENLUX SUMMER 2011
L
et’s state the obvious: Angie Harmon is stunning. She’s got a neck like a swan and cheekbones so ridiculous I don’t even know where to begin. She’s got a voice like an actress from Old Hollywood. She’s sweet and playful with a bite. There she is, looking regal in a slim velvet tuxedo, posing for Genlux in a large white chair in her back yard, when her dog bounds over to say hi. “Would you get out of my shot?” she teases.
A
ngie works it like a factory. The shoot wraps. “Sangria time!” someone shouts. “Oh it is!” Harmon responds. She generously serves the crew sangria and then leads me to a room for our interview. “I was actually touching dead people,” Angie says, with giddy fascination. She’s referring to her stint on Oprah (the episode was “Dream Jobs”), and Harmon was in the morgue like a real homicide detective, like police detective Jane Rizzoli she plays on TV (Rizzoli and Isles). “It was very…” she chooses her words carefully, “…lovely.” She explains. “I thought I was going to be terrified and nauseous, but it’s a very peaceful place. I would be a homicide detective if I could.” “Really?” I ask. She gives me a ‘Girl, you don’t even know!’ type of “Oh!” Some of Angie’s other surprising interests include NASCAR and comics. This strong, sexy actress is a bit of a comic-book nerd. She voiced commissioner Barbara Gordon in the cartoon film Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker. She’s Team Marvel and also loves video games like The Velvet Assassin. “I love the artwork [of graphic novels], the fantasy of it. Everybody’s sexy and slammin’ and they kick ass and I love all that.” I tell her that I have some questions from her fans, and her face lights up. She’s well aware of her “Twangels,” the Angie Harmon Twitter fans who tweet her constant messages of support and love. I ask her if she’d be interested in filming a video shout-out for them, and she doesn’t hesitate. The giddiness returns. Note: if you want to excite Angie Harmon, all it takes is a room of dead bodies or her Twitter fans. Not having any dead bodies around, I ask her questions courtesy of her fans: Would you like to do more voiceover work? “I’d love to.” Can you tell us anything about the second season of Rizzoli and Isles? Without pause, “No.” Then, playfully, “No. You know what? Because here’s my thing: if I tell you something, you know it’s coming. It would be like if you’re standing in line for a roller coaster and someone came up to you and described to a T what just happened. They’re my Twangels; they know what I’m like.” Her enthusiasm is something her fans definitely appreciate. That and her style. Does she have any style inspirations? “How I feel that day usually dictates what I wear. I think
I mostly enjoy dressing like a man. A baggy jean [or the feminized tuxedo perhaps], or I love a man’s shirt and baggy shorts. That’s probably my favorite. I’ve got three kids and a husband and a house, and I want to be as comfortable as I can, as often as I can.” Speaking of her husband, NFL player Jason Sehorn, I congratulate her on her upcoming ten-year anniversary. “That’s coming up soon, right?” She smiles. “Thank you. It is.” Then, suddenly, “OH MY GOD, IT IS! Oh my God, it is! I have to get something for my husband! There, that can be a question for my Twangels: ‘What can I get my husband for my anniversary?’” How does she make her relationship work? “I think because we want it to work and we want to stay together and we want a family…we want this. No marriage is perfect, but you can always feel when you’re in different places, and you gotta jump on it and talk it out and figure out what to do. There really isn’t one thing. It’s two people who grow together and are working toward the same goal.” Speaking of relationships, does she find it difficult or tricky to be one of the few staunch Republicans in liberal Hollywood? “Yeah, but I also think it would be difficult or tricky being a Democrat in a Republican area. It goes both ways. I think the importance of us being able to listen to each other and tolerate each other is where we need to get to first.” I ask her about her most recent NASCAR event, where she got to serve as the honorary pace driver for the 27th Running of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race in May. How did that come about? What was it like to drive one of those? “We have a lot of friends in the NASCAR community, and it was a really fun thing. They just asked me, ‘Would you want to drive the pace car?’ I was like, ‘ARE YOU KIDDING? Absolutely!’ Then I got in it and you can only go 47 miles per hour. And it was like, ‘…really? Are you serious?’ So it was not exactly like what I thought it would be, but nonetheless it was still fun.” What’s her favorite scene that she’s done, acting-wise? “The finale of Rizzoli and Isles. When Jane shot herself to save her brother. Jane is so close to me, running through my veins and in my skin. So when you play a hero, the most heroic moment is going to be my favorite.” Ours, too. G

Life runs through my hands and I am a ghost on roller skates. Seasons pass so quickly. Summer days are here and I personally think you should wear color and the shape that suits you, but I only ever wear black and the occasional hat. More and more, I love wearing hats with nets—it gives me the feeling of glamour almost lost. As I travel a lot, it is a good idea to pack lightly. I adore my Dolce & Gabbana lace dress over Spanx; it adds glamour to practicality. I have a shiny plastic tail coat from Norma Kamali. I live in black ankle boots from Clergerie. My sparkly last-season’s Marc Jacobs handbag is still loved and adored. I am not fickle in this area.

A play I wrote about my father called As I Like It is about to debut at the Chelsea Theatre in London—a contemporary restoration comedy. While here in LA, I'm busy working on a show of neon called Peccadilloes at the Leadapron Gallery on Melrose. The collection is inspired by cartoons of me depicting the Seven Deadly Sins, drawn by Kay Saatchi and kindly hosted by Jonathan Brown. I find we are all full of sin, so I have used myself as an example.

SuMMER OF COLOR! —George Blodwell Summer is here, gents! After a day in the summer sun, you’re probably sporting a nice, warm, healthy-looking glow. So why not add a touch of “coolness” to your attire? It’s really quite easy. This season’s fashion is all about “colorblocking”— pairing up bright primary colors that clash or complement each other. Be on the lookout for some solid-color accessories: a belt, a great shoe, a bright shirt, a colorful pocket square, watch band, or even a nice loud pair of trousers or jeans. The louder the better! Some bright, colorful socks work, too. Don’t be timid! Brighten it up!
Tap into some inspiration from DSquared2: a red jacket, white pants and a blue T-shirt is a great summer look. Add an orange or sky-blue pocket square. Accessorize your wrists with colorful Nialaya bracelets that are popping up everywhere. Even the Burberry earth tones can be jazzed up with an Hermès orange belt—taking your look to a whole new level. Pop into Tod’s and pick up a pair of colorful loafers. Celebrate the breath you take, and remember: there is only one of you on the whole planet—just one—so be brave, be colorful, be here now! Happy Summer! Love, George. SORRY, I WAS BORN THIS WAY—Almie Rose
“M
AYBE HE’S RIGHT. MAYBE THERE IS SOMETHING THE MATTER WITH ME.” – ARIEL, THE LITTLE MERMAID
We’ve all heard, “it’s not you, it’s me.” In my case, I am really, definitely, pretty much positive that it is, in fact, me. My relationships start out well, but then something happens and like most contestants’ careers post-“American Idol,” it’s suddenly over. And I have a feeling that “something” is me. Look, I can be an intense person. I’m German-Italian, that’s just gonna happen, it’s built into my DNA to be a little loud and a little proud. (I’ve probably even mentioned my heritage before; that’s how obnoxious I am.) I have little to no filter. It can be too much, and I get that. Yet, doesn’t everyone say you should be yourself? What if yourself sucks?
I can’t change who I am. I mean, I could. On dates, I could think a little more carefully before I speak. I could hold back. I could have some restraint. But if I did that, then wouldn’t I be betraying myself? Isn’t that changing who I am? I guess it’s a granted, for everyone, that on your first date, you’re going to be on your best behavior. You’re not going to, at least not within that first sober hour, tell someone you just met, “Those shoes are diabolical.” You’re going to save that for six months in. Or if you’re me, six days in. But the point is, we all are sort of ourselves. We’re the Facebook versions of ourselves. We put our best out there, our most flattering, our most witty, our most loveable. But damn, this gets tiring, right? Then again...it’s probably just me. I have a feeling that most people don’t have to try so hard to edit themselves. It’s not that I’m a total jerk; I promise I’m not! I just can’t stand listening to guff. I’m not going to be rude, but if I feel that you need to be called out, I’m going to pick up the phone and dial.
But do these less - than - flattering qualities help balance my better ones, and make those all the more endearing? Maybe that intensity is what helps me write and create. Maybe I should just accept it. Everyone’s got some kind of monkey on his or her back. What’s your flaw? Are you too critical? Maybe that critical side is what keeps you from making careless mistakes. Are you too optimistic? Maybe that’s what inspires other people. And so forth. (Leave it to someone like me to find optimism a fatal flaw.) You shouldn’t try to change who you are, unless you are a total ass-hole. But if you’re not, then don’t hide. Sure, you can put your date face on, but don’t edit yourself unless it’s going to lead to drama. You want to be nice, but you want to be you. There’s a balance. Find it! But I urge you, don’t tone it down if you don’t have to, don’t shy away, and don’t mute your colors because, baby, you were born this way. And I changed my mind, I’m not sorry!

MY HOT SUMMER HITS —Susan Campos Marea, the new boutique at the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes,
Everyone from Michelle Obama to Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson seems to be a fan of jewelry designer Kimberly McDonald. Ms. McDonald is known for her designs featuring geodes, agates and quartz mixed with gold, diamonds and other gorgeous stones. Her bracelets are insane! From $2000, Marea Boutique, 310-265-2850.
has got tongues wagging among the savvy shopping set. And since it’s curated by the same ultra-chic women behind the luxury resort retailer Seaside Luxe (whom we can thank for those uberchic stores at the two Four Seasons Hotels in Hawaii), we knew it was to be checked out at once. The gorgeous handcrafted furniture by Tim Clarke instantly sets the well-designed tone; a life-size vintage ice-cream set in pastels featured in the children’s section keeps it playful, and the well-conceived small area for shoes (all must-haves!) proves it thoughtful throughout. Damage can definitely be done: everything from vintage Chanel jewelry to Rag & Bone jeans for men and tees for the kiddies in the softest Splendid cotton. But ladies, let’s not front, we know why you’re here. After you’re done artfully purchasing for the fam, go crazy with designers such as Frank & Eileen, Seaton, Poupette and Vanita Rosa from St. Barth, and Gregory Parkinson. Exhausted yet from all the retail therapy? Then simply collapse in a chair, nurse a latte, or sip some champagne. And if you must stay the night for further repair, well, there are worse places to lay your head than the resort’s beyond gorge hotel—still soaking in excess brain waves from hosting the TED conference—with its stunning views of the ocean. And then look what you get to do the next day: Marea, all over again! Marea Boutique at Ter ranea Resort, Palos Verdes, 310-265-2849

IN THE MIX: SARI SLOANE has a vision for what sells. as the head buyer for intermix, she has a knack for picking the next big thing.
STYLE EXPERT
Growing up in New York, Sari Sloane was constantly surrounded by a mix of high and low, with a melding of uptown chic and downtown edge. Before Intermix CEO Khajak Keledjian recruited her as head buyer for all his stores, Sari was a buyer at Bergdorf Goodman, and even managed to start her own label. Her vision and innovative merchandising philosophy have helped to solidify Intermix’s position as the go-to boutique.
About four years ago, Sandrine de Laage became Harry Winston’s art director. Since then, she has overseen almost all aspects of the company’s creative branding process. She has led their design team in the creation of notable jewelry collections including New York, Ultimate Design, and The Incredibles; the re-design of the setting for the legendary Hope Diamond; and the Midnight timepiece. What projects are you working on?
This has been a very dynamic year for Harry Winston. We also just launched a beautiful advertising campaign, shot by Patrick Demarchelier and featuring Freja Beha, and this spring we introduced an exciting new collection called Lily Cluster that is a very light, modern play on the iconic Harry Winston Cluster design. gENLUXshop EXOTIC BEAUTy Watch out for Disney’s new it girl. Born in South Carolina, Kelsey Chow is best known for her role as Gigi Silveri in One Tree Hill. Half Chinese, half American, this striking beauty is starring on the Disney Channel as Mikayla, the female lead in Pair of Kings, opposite Mitchel Musso and Doc Shaw. This summer she can be seen in the highly anticipated Spiderman 4 with Andrew Garfield. How would you describe your personal style?
Depends on my mood. I like to experiment with different styles: bohemian, classic, edgy. What’s your favorite item in your closet?
A D&G black silk and lace dress I bought with my mother almost five years ago! I love the elegance and style. What’s always in your purse?
Nivea’s Kiss of Moisture lip balm. What’s your weekend look?
Modern hippie by day, rocker by night. What message do your clothes give the world about you?
It’s ever-changing and evolving: I’m very open-minded to life—different styles, food, places, people, etc. If you could only wear one designer from head to toe, including accessories, who would it be?
That would constantly change. Currently, I would say Chloe or Isabel Marant. What’s your favorite low-price secret-weapon store?
Mango. I love their styles. It’s very trendy and has a European flair to it. It’s also sentimental—reminds me of my family travels when I was younger. Very happy to have Mango now in the U.S.! What’s your earliest fashion memory?
My mom dressed me quite differently than most young girls in Columbia, South Carolina. She always had a fashion sense ahead of its time. My favorites were the really modern pieces we’d buy while in France. What do you sleep in?
My grandmother always said to keep the mystery, so no comment! What kind of watch do you wear?
A Seiko vintage watch my mother used to wear when she was my age. Who’s your favorite fashion photographer?
Annie Leibovitz What’s your favorite scent?

Summer is the time to trade in heavy, intoxicating scents for the lighter, fresher allure of something milder. Many labels offer season-appropriate versions of time-honored favorites, while others offer scents that are simply more suited when the mercury rises. Face Place Face Place’s one and only facial, their signature treatment, focuses on getting your circulation flowing to increase oxygenation of the cells. After a steam, a very thorough and nearly pain-free extraction cleans out every pore. Collagen is applied to your face and a compress of zinc and vitamin C is wrapped on your skin while a very low electrical current runs through the compress to stimulate absorption. After a few minutes you begin to feel a tingle and the blood flowing to your face. You are then treated to an exfoliation, cleansing and moisturizer with Face Place products, which are so gentle but effective. Genlux Out-of-Towner
It’s amazing how one of the world’s most elegant full-time businesswomen has time to breathe, but Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele thrives on her roles as co-president, artistic director and head of creation and design for luxury brand Chopard. Even at a young age, Caroline took an intense interest in the family business of fine timepieces. She began her career studying design and gemology, while learning the ins and outs of the Chopard empire. In 1985 she spearheaded the launch of Chopard’s incredibly successful “Happy Diamond” collection, solidifying her as a force in the company and the high-fashion jewelry market. In 1997 the president of the Cannes Film Festival commissioned her to redesign the world-famous “Palme d’Or,” which elevated the company into a permanent symbol of glamour in the film world. Because of her patronage to the Cannes festival, she was asked to design the Chopard Trophy, which is awarded annually to young up-and-coming stars. Chopard’s highly celebrated “Red Carpet Collection” followed in 2007 with the debut of sixty luxury pieces at the 60th anniversary of the prestigious film festival. Since then, Chopard has put forth an annual collection, adorning the industry’s most notable actors and actresses. In addition to designing and overseeing these creations, Caroline has set out to make a difference by partnering with the José Carreras, Elton John, and Prince of Wales charity foundations. Despite Chopard’s immense success, she continues to evolve her company and strives to bring elegance and impeccable design to the world stage. We caught up with Caroline to talk about her favorite LA spots and travel must-haves when visiting Hollywood. —By Courtney Fortune

What’s in your carry-on? iPad, BlackBerry, drawing paper and pencils to sketch jewelry designs, a good book, my good-luck charms, Chopard sunglasses (of course), one of my favorite perfumes, Fracas by Robert Piguet, and makeup.
What’s the first thing you do to unwind? I take off my shoes and have a shower. How do you make your hotel room feel more like home? I unpack and settle in. Usually there are flowers in my room when I arrive, which definitely makes me feel at home. I travel with a stuffed bear and pictures of family and close friends. Red-eye or morning flight? I like taking the afternoon flight; you have the morning to do some work and still arrive at a decent hour to get a good night’s sleep. How do you look refreshed after a long flight? I try to sleep on the plane. Then, a splash of cold water and a mask does the trick! What do you wish LA had more of that you have in NY? The nightlife. What do you wish NY had that LA has? The weather.
