W

elcome to our Spring/Summer issue with a special emphasis on bridal.

Mon coeur balance! This season my heart is split between casual chic and goddesslike outfits. Between a walk through Central Park on a hot and humid summer afternoon or gambling at the casino all night in Monte Carlo. I guess both scenarios appeal to me. For an opulent and classy look, Zuhair Murad is the man for me. He is one of the few fashion designers who create haute couture. He knows how material and shape work on a woman’s body. Born in Lebanon, as a little kid he always dreamt of escaping to a world of fantasy, which is exactly how his collections might be described: a fantasy world. Two of my faves are the lace jumpsuit with silk capelet and handbeaded silk bodysuit, both worn with gold metal belts. Je veux s’il vous plaît! As for laid-back fun attire, Diane von Furstenberg gets my vote. (p24) By the way, have you seen the “Journey of the Dress” exhibit at LACMA? It’s hard to believe that forty years ago Diane created the iconic wrap dress. If you love fashion, art and design, go see it. You have until May 1st. Speaking of art, congratulations to Philippe Vergne, the new director of MOCA. Last weekend I had the pleasure to attend MOCA’s 35th anniversary gala presented by Louis Vuitton and celebrating the opening of the Mike Kelley exhibition. The event netted $2.4 million to support the museum’s operations and follows MOCA’s recent success in raising its endowment to a historic high of over $100 million. We are very excited about this. Job well done! This is our second time having Lydia Hearst grace our cover. We had a blast working with her last time, so we welcome the heiress back. A beautiful young lady with a good head on her shoulders. Are you ready for BritWeek? Let’s go!

I

t was February 2009, and we first met Amanda Eliasch in her Beverly Hills home for the celebration of the launch of Cloak & Dagger Butterfly— a book of her brilliant poetry. The party grew particularly auspicious when out rolled a giant martini glass, and in climbed none other than Dita Von Teese, who splish-splashed her way through her burlesque performance, complete with crystal-encrusted bikini. We later discovered that Dita had been in Paris at the time, so Amanda, rarely one to take no for an answer, flew her in just for the party. First class, of course.

Since that first meeting, we witnessed Amanda’s quirky imagination alchemize a play, neon art, a successful blog, and most recently, a movie about—what else?—her life. Perhaps by default, she’s also become a real-estate mogul, having bought and sold five or six, beautiful homes for herself here, London and Paris. Her Paris home was once owned by artist Tamara de Lempicka. She’s also amassed an eclectic mix of modern art and furnishings—some, frankly, that incite slack-jaw reactions. At Genlux, we became so enamoured of Amanda’s nonstop attitude, fantastic lifestyle, and endless wardrobe closet we proudly crowned her the fashion editor of this magazine. Now when it comes to love, Amanda’s checked off as many things on her to-do, as her not-to-do, list. She’s been married twice and divorced twice, once when she was only twenty (that lasted two years), and once to Johan Eliasch, the chairman and CEO of Head—the company famous for skis and tennis rackets. Amanda and Johan have two boys, both grown and in college now. Many have come to know Amanda through her free-spirited

and sometimes painfully honest blog, Rat’s Tales, where she filets her life right before our eyes, often calling herself porky or fat, and she doesn’t hold back from sharing the problems she’s had with men. She’s built her successful foray into filmmaking the same way. In her film The Gun, the Cake and the Butterfly, she sliced her life, hung it on pieces of video, and edited it without fear. The beautifully executed self-portrayal, which also stars Justine Glenton and Lisa Zane, transports us into the unfiltered mind, heart and bed of the hauntingly honest and vulnerable British bon vivant. Along the twisted, sensual path of her life, Amanda weaves through the loss of innocence and her tragic childhood, into the luxurious world of love and sex in high society. Cheating husbands and gold-digging lovers leave her companionless, yet optimistic, with a lifetime of extraordinary moments in the face of endless longing for unattainable love. The shining result is an award-winning film that’s an open book…wide open. The good news, it’s a very spicy read.

Here, Amanda answers the Genlux two-word questionnaire: Your youth? I attended the Cordon Bleu and finishing school at Winkfield Place, in Windsor, where I learned to walk, talk, get into a car, flower-arrange, and be a good wife. For a year I learned to sew, to make lampshades—all these domestic duties. My parents had grand plans that I was to marry a duke and live in the country. Your passion? Living life to the fullest. I want to experience everything! I want to live many lives. In the end, I want to be able to create something that will continue after I die—to do something worthwhile. Your charities? I have many. Elephant Family. The London Symphony Orchestra, because unlike most, they practice every day of the year. I also support the British Film Institute, and Art of Elysium in Los Angeles. Your loves? My sons, fashion, art, music, and trying new things, like Kundalini yoga. Favorite escape? Marrakech. It’s like 400 BC there. It’s interesting to go back in time. Favorite paintings? All pieces of work by Velázquez. I like Matisse too, and I have a few ceramics from Picasso. I also love a little-known 1950s English artist named Michael Ayrton. (continued )

Amanda with friend Lisa Zane, who appears in The Gun, the Cake, and the Butterfly

What superpower? To see the future. Painful memories? Many about my father. Also, my love stories are a disaster. I’ve made some painful decisions. Joyful moment? Giving birth to my two sons. It’s a vanity project, because you know they’re not really for you—they fly from you. You have to give them their wings, and they are not yours to manipulate, and that’s very difficult. Why Hollywood? I came here because the children have to grow up. My two boys would be mommy’s boys if I’m around, and that’s not very attractive to other women. Music genre? The four last songs by Richard Strauss—they are my favorite pieces of music. Favorite museum? The Victorian Museum in London. You’re wearing? My favorite: a Louis Vuitton A-line dress. You’re carrying? I love my Vlieger & Vandam handbag, because it’s naughty. It’s got an impression of a gun on it. The bag comes with a warning: “To avoid any problems do not take this bag on a plane or to the bank to pick up cash.” I also love my new pink and black Prada bag. DNA change? I’d like to change my feisty character. Self-control is a dreary thing too, but it would save a lot of drama. Favorite poets? I like the English war poets from the Second World War, and Shakespeare sonnets. Fad diet? The last three weeks I’ve been doing the no-carb diet and I’ve lost nine pounds, but I still have to lose another seven. Or is it 14? Your workout? I do yoga, though I do these things to get through life—that’s it. I like to be as busy as possible, then I have no time to think. Drama queen? I suppose I’m turning into one. But I’d rather not. I don’t think I’m a diva, but perhaps I am? Fantasy dinner? Oh, that’s fun. I like Peggy Guggenheim. Madonna, so it’s going to be amusing. George Clooney. You have to have someone fancy, so I’d want Shakespeare just to pop by. John Donne, another fabulous writer of the 16th century. I’ve got to have someone who’s beautiful…a great beauty, like Marilyn Monroe, Betty Davis, or Rita Hayworth. I like all those old Hollywood divas. What’s next? Let’s see. Well, I’m working with pyxit.com. It’s a website that keeps your memories alive. I love this site because things are lost in time and space and here is a place to keep them forever. Favorite movie? The L-Shaped Room. I also really love an old thriller that my grandfather, Sidney Gilliat, directed and wrote, Green for Danger. When I was a child, I used to watch it all the time—to try and catch the murderer. I could never believe that it was the person who it was, and it upset me. Favorite decades? The 50s and 60s. I’d love to hang out with Andy Warhol. I would have liked to be friends with Marilyn. Next journey? To write a contemporary children’s musical—a modern tale. I’d also love to run off with the man of my dreams, but unfortunately he’s already married. G

Amanda Eliasch’s controversial film The Gun, the Cake and the Butterfly will screen exclusively as part of BritWeek’s annual series of events that highlight the rich and varied creative relationship between the UK and the US. BritWeek runs April 21 to May 4 in Los Angeles.

Pennsylvania-born beauty Dr. Carla Sands studied fine art and art history in college, switched to pre-med, and received her degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College in Atlanta. In 1999, she married real-estate mogul Fred Sands, president of MOCA. The couple live in a Tuscan-style villa in Bel-Air they share with their daughter, Alexandra. Here, Dr. Sands answers a few questions from our philanthropy editor, CATHERInE WILLAMS. Photography by TRACEY MORRIS What are you most grateful for? Marrying my husband. Without him I wouldn’t have my incredible life and family. If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?

I’d love to live more in the moment.

How would your closest friends describe you?

Hopefully

they’d say I was trustworthy and kind. I love the work of the new team at Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli. And I think Elie Saab makes women look like goddesses. Who are your favorite fashion designers?

Valentino shirt, jeans by 7 for all mankind and low Fendi motorcycle boots.

Who are you wearing today?

What charity events do you always make time to attend?

MOCA’s openings—my husband’s the president. The Hammer, the LA Philharmonic, and the LA Opera. And I love the Colleagues Lunch that supports Children’s Institute.

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?

Becoming the Blue Ribbon president and helping to grow the organization. Of course I love The Blue Ribbon because of the members and the Children’s Festival. We’ve brought over 800,000 children to the Music Center for free in the last 44 years. I love Children’s Institute because they help abused and neglected children and their families. I think they heal families. It’s so fundamental.

What charities are closest to your heart?

The Blue Ribbon was founded 45 years ago by Dorothy Chandler to fund performing arts at the LA Music Center. It’s still the largest independent fundraising group for the Center. The Blue Ribbon funds and supports Center Theater Group, the Los Angeles

Opera, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the LA Master Chorale, and Glorya Kaufman Dance at the Music Center. There’s a great deal of Blue Ribbon influence overall at the resident-company level. Our big gift to the community is the Children’s Festival. Each spring we bring 18,000 fifth-graders from all over the greater Los Angeles area to the Music Center free of charge. Any school can participate. The students see a world-class show, and it’s the first time that many of them experience a live performance. Then they participate in a choreographed dance on the plaza. So three thousand kids at a time are doing this gigantic happening of a dance. It’s incredible!

How would you inspire more women to become involved

Make it fun and make it meaningful. Some people want a hands-on experience, and some want to just write a check. You have to take care of both.

with charitable organizations?

What’s your greatest distraction?

My iPad.

So many. I’m a serial reader, but one is The Good and Beautiful God. It’s inspirational.

What book are you currently reading?

What causes you the most frustration?

Traffic in LA!

If you had one day to live over again, which day would it be?

Any day I’m traveling.

LOVELY LYDIa So far, supermodel, actress, and Operation Smile ambassador Lydia Hearst has steered clear of controversy. But now, as she’s dropped in the boiling pot of reality TV via The Face, we’re waiting to see if she’ll cave under the chaos. Our STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER serves up some hot topics like Naomi Campbell, Terry Richardson, wearing fur, Scientology, and that new love in her life, to see if she’ll flinch.

I

get a text from Lydia Hearst on my iPhone: “I just got to NYC! I booked Condemned, a new horror movie. I play a degenerate junkie who lives in an abandoned downtown New York building and terrorizes teens.” My initial thought is, how in the world is this little rich girl who’s never done a drug in her life ever going to prepare for this role? My next thought is, Lydia can.

I text her back: “Congrats and I hope Kevin is okay.” Splashed on my Yahoo! homepage today was news that her boyfriend broke his leg on the film set of Entourage. He’s actor Kevin Connolly who plays Eric Murphy, or “E”—the one who looks barely old enough to drive a car, but who’s 40. The two met on Facebook. It was Lydia who initiated by sending a ‘friend request.’ He ‘messaged’ her, they met, and have been inseparable ever since. A real modernday romance. “Yes, I’m in love and I get more in love every day,” the green-eyed beauty tells me over tea at the On Rodeo Bistro. “I’m a hopeless romantic.” Lydia’s other big news is her successful new show, The Face, on the Oxygen channel. It’s a model competition reality show that features fellow supermodel Naomi Campbell, Victoria’s Secret supermodel Anne Vyalitsyna, a gaggle of always-on-the-verge-of-crying teenage models, and, to mitigate the madness, one Lydia Hearst. There’s plenty of chaos, buckets of tears and gobs of controversy. Good stuff. The result is a wildly entertaining cocktail—sure to give that other top-model show a

run for its money. For starters, this one actually has a chance of discovering America’s next top model. “Our show is very different,” claims Lydia. “There are various campaigns that these girls are competing for, where they actually get them. One ultimate winner will become the face of Frederick Fekkai, 2014. They all have legitimate potential— they weren’t just picked off the street.” Like NBC’s The Voice, Lydia, Naomi and Anne each mentor or coach their team of models to win a series of challenges. Naomi also serves as executive producer, which does, it seems, give her the upper hand. “I love Naomi. Believe it or not, she’s really not a diva,” Lydia says of fashion’s most notorious prima donna. “I must say Naomi’s got one of the most incredible work ethics.” Lydia is equally vanilla when talking about the models. “They’re all very unique and beautiful in their own way,” she says. “There might be one girl in particular who needs a bit of a reality check. Yes, there are some shocking things that happen—people can only put on masks and facades for so long, but eventually you do see the truth.” After seeing a few

episodes, I can tell you that one girl is definitely nuts and Naomi is definitely a diva. Speaking of truth, allegations continue to sprout on the Internet slamming fashion photographer Terry Richardson’s sexual misconduct with young models. Cringing claims of “waggling privates” and “predatory behavior” are bandied about. Again, Lydia skirts the controversy. “I love him. He’s one of the nicest, funniest people I’ve shot with. He has an artistic vision and he makes you very comfortable. I know people try to say one thing or another, but honestly, I’ve never seen him be anything but completely respectful and professional on set.” Hmm.. anyone considering remaking The Stepford Wives? To wit, Lydia offers some modeling and, yes, parenting advice. “For young models, you can’t be that naïve. This is a grown-up industry, so if you’re not a grownup, where are your parents? Why are their parents sending them out to castings and shootings alone? That’s a bigger issue than whatever is happening on set. I know that when you’re on a film set (television or movies), there is no child who’s unsupervised at any time. I think it’s inexcusable in fashion.” Though Lydia wears fur, she’s quick to diffuse any controversy. “The fur I wear is vintage. I don’t know if that makes a difference in people’s beliefs nowadays. If I were, theoretically, to buy

a fur today, I’d buy vintage.” Spiritually, Lydia was baptized Protestant, but now considers herself a Scientologist. “When it came to Scientology I didn’t really understand what everyone was talking about. I’d just moved to LA and was sort of lost in this new city. So I went and got a book, A New Slant on Life. Probably a week later, I went to the church and have been going ever since. That was two years ago.” If there’s one thing Lydia says she’d give up entertainment and modeling for, it’s her ambassadorship with Operation Smile, now going on 10 years— the nonprofit that gives needed surgery to young patients with cleft palates. “I started with them by stuffing and mailing letters to raise awareness, and slowly got more involved. My first mission was to Cairo in 2009. It was a completely lifealtering experience and put everything in perspective. Since then, I’ve been to Panama, Canada, and to Sweden, for the launch of the global offices there. It’s such a remarkable experience, such a great charity.” Lydia, who turns 30 this year, hopes to have her own children one day, but for now, working with Operation Smile fulfills her desire. “I love these kids. They’re all so beautiful and amazing and they’re just really precious. They make you understand the true value of life and how significant a smile really is,” she says, smiling. G

Slumber with the best that nature has to offer in this dramatic canopy bed. The capricious dimensions invite colorful dreamscapes; the majesty of the carved wood has been divinely sculpted to exude a feeling of being cocooned and protected from the outside world.

Kevin Walz Daybed

This daybed is perfect for relaxation and close encounters of the romantic kind. Crafted with comfort in mind, it’s enveloped in luxurious, inviting silk velvet, and enhanced by plush bolsters cleverly designed to change positions. Use your vivid imagination to find your very own comfort zone.

‘Falling’ by Niamh Barry

This romantic light sculpture is formed around the idea of a glorious suspended moment. Polished bronze rings are finished with reflective mirrors and opal glass, and imbued with a sense that they’re falling and may collapse into one another. Next to candlelight, I believe this to be the ultimate love light.

‘Fallen Tree Bench’ by Benjamin Graindorge

This piece was conceived to portray the DNA of wood in its primal glory. In one bold stroke it brings the outside in, and becomes a living, breathing energy within your home. The beautiful marriage between manmade Lucite and artistically twisted wood partially returned to its original form serves up a subliminal reminder of our own truest essence.

This table comes to life in the sculptor’s hands as if in a slow dance between opposing forms. American black walnut and Calacatta marble are separate yet equal here, each holding its place in a soothing rhythm of inspired movement. Its graceful presence suggests a lasting love affair between two entities.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA OFFERS UP A LUSCIOUS BOOK OF HIS LIFE—50 YEARS IN THE MAKING. —STEPHEN KAMIFUJI

O

ne might find it shocking to hear that such a talent as Oscar de la Renta once needed to pull out the ‘fake it till you make it’ card, but truth be told, he did. In his new book, T he Style, Inspiration, and Life of Oscar de la Renta (Assouline), he admits that in 1959, while interviewing for a position with Antonio Castillo at Lanvin—a skilled position for which he clearly wasn’t qualified—he exaggerated his work experience at Balenciaga. Castillo hired him on the spot. To get up to speed, well, let’s let Oscar tell the story: “I bought time by saying I had to go back to Spain and collect my things. Then I went straight out and looked up the biggest advert for a fashion school in the yellow pages. I called up the lady and asked if she could teach me everything she knew in the space of two weeks.” From there, Oscar came to New York in 1963. At a dinner on his very first night in the city, he was strategically placed (thanks to Count Lanfranco Rasponi) next to Elizabeth Arden, whom Rasponi knew was on the hunt for a new designer. As it turns out, Castillo had left Arden to start his own collection— something that angered Arden. So Oscar played up the fact that he worked as Castillo’s assistant, and Arden, who couldn’t resist a little payback, bit, hiring him the following morning. Five decades later, and Oscar de la Renta has designed for major film stars, royalty, politicians, and some of the most important ladies who ever lunched. Though he considers himself to have “the memory of a mosquito,” and not one to look back—with nary an archive to speak of—this book resolves all of that. It is full of wonderful anecdotes and stunning photographs that document Oscar de la Renta’s enduring legacy. “What matters above all are the people I love and to try to have a life that is well-lived. Every day I wake and see the sunrise, I look up and say, ‘God, thank you.’” The Style, Inspiration, and Life of Oscar de la Renta, published by Assouline, $125, assouline.com

SERIOUSLY, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT... BY LAURA DUNN (THE FABULOUS365.COM BLOGGER) MY MIRACLE MASK

A 20-hour flight can absolutely destroy your skin... and that’s exactly what happened to me a couple of weeks ago on my way to Bali. I’d checked my SK11 3D Mask in my luggage— not my carry-on. When I arrived, I looked so dry and sallow that I frightened even myself. The return flight was a different story. When I landed, my complexion actually had enough of a beautiful glow

that a fellow passenger told me I had beautiful skin. It softened and hydrated beyond my wildest dreams. Getting off a long flight and having your skin look good is almost impossible, but I was able to pull it off with my new ‘never to travel without’ companion. A skin serum made from your own platelets? I’m not kidding. I just saw a friend who looks ten years younger. Her secret weapon? PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatment performed by world-famous Dr. Fouad Ghaly in Torrance. So of course, I couldn’t get an appointment soon enough! When I arrived at the office, four vials of my blood were centrifuged (spun at a high speed) to separate the platelets and growth factors, which were then mixed with Dr. Ghaly’s secret recipe of vitamins and minerals. A serum was then created that is unique to me. The doctor made micro-punctures in my skin using a dermaroller to help the serum penetrate my face neck, hands and legs. I left the plasma on overnight to allow for maximum absorption. The treatment took a total of 60 minutes, with really no downtime except for a few bruises that were easily covered with makeup. The upside? I can already see a difference in my skin tone and texture. The best part? My skin will continue to form new collagen, creating a lifting and toning effect that will last until my next treatment in six weeks. A total of three treatments and once-a-year maintenance. Production design was never Derek McLane’s long-term game plan. But while at Harvard, he was asked to design a set and found his passion. He went on to receive his MFA from the Yale School of Drama, and now sports an Emmy nomination and a Tony award on his mantle. When he’s not busy creating scenic designs for the Oscars or Broadway plays, his favorite thing to do is being with his three kids, fishing and enjoying the ocean air in Massachusetts. Here, Derek tackles our Genlux two-word questionnaire. CURRENT PROJECTS? I just collaborated with Swarovski on the

set and theater décor for the 86th Oscars. Last year was my first time designing for the award show and Swarovski collaboration. I’m working on several new musicals and two revivals, including the Broadway revival of Gigi. I have another project for TV in the works. ANY AWARDS? I’ve been fortunate to receive many awards and

nominations, on a wide range of projects. It’s always an honor to be recognized by colleagues and critics. PROUDEST MOMENT? I think the award I’m the most proud of is the Tony I received for 33 Variations in 2009. BIGGEST PROJECT? It’s hard to say what my biggest project was, as my definition of that changes as I continue to work. My first show on Broadway was What’s Wrong With This Picture? It was a flop, and closed in nine days! My first Tony nomination came with The Pajama Game, starring Harry Connick Jr. and Kelli O’Hara, and it was a smash hit. Last year I designed The Sound of Music Live, which was very exciting, and was a huge project. FAVORITE PROJECTS? They’re also some of the most challenging, like

the new musical Beautiful, the Carole King Musical, 33 Variations, and the Broadway revival of Anything Goes. THOUGHT PROCESS? I start every project a little differently. If

it’s a play or musical, I read the script and listen to the music. For something like the Oscars, I start by talking with the producers about the themes of the show, and brainstorming ideas. For example, when we found out about Frozen’s nomination for Best Song, I immediately watched the film. I saw the ice palace and felt that the Frozen performance would be the best place for the Swarovski crystal drapes. YOUR INSPIRATION? I get inspired all over the place—from walking

around New York City, to looking through photography books, to things I see in nature. I see inspiration in all sorts of situations. AVERTED FIASCO? When we did How to Succeed in Business on

Broadway, Daniel Radcliffe had a prop book he carried and read from through out the show—it is a part of the story. At the first preview, the book got knocked into the orchestra pit after the first scene, and could not be retrieved. Since it was the first preview, we had no back up. In a panic, my assistant slipped out of the theatre, taking her laptop, went to the office and printed out a new version of the book, stapled it together, and ran it back stage. Someone handed it Daniel before the next scene, and no one was the wiser. PLAN B? I would be some other type of designer—furniture designer, interior designer. I have ideas, visual ideas all the time, and love trying to make them come to life. YOUR MENTOR? I have an uncle who is an architect, a really wonderful

architect, and he has always been someone who admires (and sometimes critiques) my work. FAVORITE ARCHITECT? Aside from my uncle, I am a huge fan of Renzo Piano. I was lucky enough to meet him last year. He came to the Oscars, and I met him at the Governor’s Ball.

European Port? Try Catalina, less than an hour away

or a far-away-feeling destination that’s not so far away, look no further than Santa Catalina Island, 22 miles off SoCal’s coast. Catalina’s fascinating history involves Spanish settlers, Hollywood legends, the Chicago Cubs—and a giant herd of buffalo. Despite growing up in California, I’d never been, so decided to go! This year, the town of Avalon (and only official town on the isle) turns 100, and according to her fans, she has never looked better. How to get there? Chopper over Magnum P.I.-style (weather permitting), or do like we did and get nautical. Take the Catalina Express (ports out of San Pedro, Long Beach and Dana Point) and watch dolphins frolic, feel the wind in your hair, sunbathe on the open deck or lounge with a libation in the Commodore Cabin. Regardless, arrive feeling frisky for adventure—all in under an hour. With the city behind us, we ditched our luggage and made a break for Avalon Grille. We canoodled in a crescent-shaped booth, ate a scandalous amount of starters and watched the sun sink through picture windows. My handsome chap and I shared a buttery filet and wild-caught salmon, cooked to savory perfection. In recent years, the town has stepped up its culinary game and boasts top-notch bistros, including Bluewater Grill, Steve’s Steakhouse and the casual but delicious Lobster Trap. On the short walk back from dinner to our Hotel Metropole digs, we glamorized the days pirates hid in the surrounding coves, Water Colors: Clark Gable swam the Fishing boats green waters, and the beached at low tide Chicago Cubs played ball (spring training). Our fashionable suite did not disappoint. It featured a cozy fireplace, open living area, sumptuous linens, bay

Other sweet and chic stays on the island include the Vista Del Mar, Pavilion Hotel and Snug Harbor Inn. Not so early to rise, we grabbed homemade carbs from Catalina Coffee & Cookie Company (where we ran into Mayor Robert Kennedy) and headed for the Zip Line Eco Tour. Our guides Elena and Russell (slash Lucy/Ricky comedy duo) coaxed out my inner man-on-wire. Not your typical sketchy, middle-of-nowhere, jungle zip excursion, this state-of-the-art tour has plenty of safety features. Soar through breathtaking canyons 500 feet above the Pacific, and by the final zip, you’ll be begging for more. Non-adrenalin seekers should explore the Garden-to-Sky Hike in the Wrigley Memorial Botanic Garden. According to Russell, a native, “Hiking the interior of the island is something special. You just might roam where the buffalo do.” A short stroll from the center of Avalon takes you to Descanso Beach, where activities abound: snorkel or free dive with guides, rent a kayak or a boat, book a private cabana or chaise with waiter service. You can’t miss the nearby Avalon Casino, a stunning 1929 art deco masterpiece, featuring the original theatre where movie magnates such as Samuel Goldwin and Cecil B. DeMille premiered features. Golf lovers might revel in a round at the oldest operating golf course west of the Mississippi. Hotel Metropole Before shoving off to Catalina’s finest luxury hotel awaits you the mainland, we hit up the Marketplace arcade and engaged in an oldfashioned game of skiball. Catalina does transport you to an earlier, gentler California, alive with romance and adventure. It’s a place where everyone seems to know your name—even the mayor. @ClubTracy G

Great as a ‘day-of ’ product for brides or anyone else liable to encounter a photographer using flash. Sure to be your “smooth secret” by helping to keep you looking rested, reducing puffiness, and softening fine lines. You’ll look fresh and well-rested for your big day or those HD iPhone selfies. non-surgical procedures, Botox/Dysport reigns supreme. A good number of “Botox Parties” are performed for bridal parties and the mothers of the bride and groom. Fillers, facials, and special treatments to brighten and smooth the face are also popular to ensure a beaming bride at her best. They’ve evolved Micro-Needling with heightened accuracy and longerterm results. Enhanced results are achieved through the addition of a Stem Cell Protein Therapy or custom formulated Pure Plasma Cell Infusion (using various components of the patient’s own blood). This therapy, in concert with the doctor’s own KO’AN Peptide Oxygen Serum, jump-starts cellular regeneration and repair, creating a dramatic and noticeable improvement in skin texture. Micro-Needling is a dramatically evolving, minimally invasive procedure that stimulates the natural formation of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, vastly improving texture, firmness, suppleness and elasticity. Using an enhanced Micro-Needling device, high-speed vibrations and short movements create passages in the skin to allow penetration of a topically applied bioactive material without significant trauma to skin, encouraging optimal pattern collagen synthesis. With minimal downtime, MicroNeedling helps to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks, and even significant hyper-pigmentation. Micro-Needling vs Lasers: There are numerous skin lasers and other destructive devices on the market that tout “collagen-building” results. These devices create deep, controlled burns to the skin and subcutaneous tissue and require downtime for wound healing. These ablative procedures build collagen through tissue injury and inflammation. This damage destroys the normal architecture of collagen, injuring healthy cells and stem cells that normally produce collagen, elastin and aid in future healing. Lasers’ heat energy also causes a vigorous inflammatory response that leads to an unorganized ‘panic mode’ of wound healing. This looks good initially due to swelling, but months later, as the tissues recover and

Cosmetics buyer Melanie Isett had a knack for developing what would become today’s hottest beauty brands. Now she is the founder of her very own collection, Vielet—a line of tanks and tees made from luxurious, lightweight merino wool. Her mission is to “change the way you tee.” Based in New Hampshire, Melanie is a new mom and avid runner who draws inspiration from her active lifestyle, fashion trends, and passion to cultivate the next big thing.

What projects are you working on?

My collection of high-fashion-tofunction tanks and tees. I didn’t always want to look sporty in workout clothes, so I created a breathable, effortless wardrobe that would transition with me when I exercise, have a business meeting, fulfill mommy duties, travel, and even be versatile enough to sleep in. I’m also advising a start-up skin care company and launching a girls’ dancewear website, The Leotard Boutique. I’m learning to work smarter, speak French, and swim—so I can fulfill my goal of completing a triathlon.

Amie on the beach at her favorite escape, the Cheval Blanc Randheli hotel, Maldives. What projects are you working on?

I’m in the midst of planning our annual Living Beauty Fundraiser, hosted by Lanvin, taking place April 26th at our home. This is a somewhat unique event since it transcends the typical fundraiser gala, mixing fashion and philanthropy. The highlight of this year’s event will be an exclusive west coast showing of the Lanvin 2014 pre-fall collection. Last year’s event, hosted by Tom Ford, raised over $250,000 benefitting our organization’s mission to educate, uplift and empower women in their fight against cancer.

Few fashionistas know shoes quite like Sandra Choi, creative director of the iconic accessories brand Jimmy Choo. The lifestyle label is best known for its glamorous footwear, handbags, eyewear and more. Born in the UK, Choi began her career with Jimmy Choo at an early age, working for her uncle—the namesake of what would become the affluent brand. As Choo’s blossoming protégé, Choi spent hours designing, cutting patterns, stitching, fitting and constructing. Soon her passion for design grew into a passion for business. In 1996, the Jimmy Choo brand launched with Choi as the company’s creative director. It has since grown into an internationally sought-after label, garnering celebrity clientele like Princess Diana, Halle Berry, and Sandra Bullock. With Choi’s fashion foresight, Jimmy Choo has become one of today’s most prominent accessories line. This season marks another milestone for the brand, as it debuts its new retail design concept in April at the company’s store on Rodeo Drive. A collaboration between Sandra Choi and David Collins Studio, the new look reflects the richness of glamorous materials, shimmering details and soft pink pearlescent hues. “I wanted our new space to be a luxurious environment that would combine the refined detail of an haute couture salon with the intimacy of a fantasy closet,” says Choi. In addition to her store opening, she enjoys LA for its Malibu beaches and the ambiance of the Soho House. —Courtney Fortune
