Letter from Nicole

Recently, my husband went away on a work trip. It was an overseas trip to the US (the things we do for work!), leaving us separated for a few weeks – far longer than we’ve ever been before.

During that time, for a variety of reasons, (such as school camps, bio parent visits etc), I found myself in a situation where I was home with just two of my children, for about four days.

As a blended family of seven, this is a rare situation indeed – very rare. The norm for me is a flurry of activity, noise, organised (and some not-so) chaos, jobs, errands, work, lifts, cooking, organising, helping, sorting – you get the idea.

But for four days, it was me, and two others. The quiet two. The easy two. The two that are happy to just chill.

And so, I found myself with something I simply never have – time. Time after I’d finished work, done the washing, made lunches, helped with homework, played games, cooked dinner, done the dishes, and taken kids to bed.

So, I did things I never do.

I read books. I cleared out my wardrobe. I watched a movie. I rested

And more importantly, I had time to think. Think about my day, my kids, my work, my life.

And that got me thinking, how often do we make time to just sit and think. To rediscover who we are, our interests, our passions, our needs

The answer, for me at least, is basically never.

And while I wouldn’t swap the chaos of my family for the world, one thing I did realise is the importance of taking time for me.

Because without taking care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else. At least not to the best of your ability anyway.

That old saying is true – you need to fit your own oxygen mask first!

Look at it this way, your family deserve the best version of you. So, make an effort to give it to them.

Same, same but different!

There is something very inspiring about starting something afresh. A blank page and a beautiful pen, new workout gear – hearing the subtle ‘pop’ of a fresh bottle of fancy champagne. A new beginning can be a time of unfettered imagination with the world as your oyster and endless possibilities.

A new beginning can also be a painful time of scraping yourself together and licking your wounds before tentatively (and extremely bravely) taking the first step into your new reality. All my friends are turning (or have just turned) 50. I’m not quite there yet but it does seem to make a big impact.

Most of my friends are also in long term (>20 year) marriages and the combination of these two factors seem to be pretty volatile. There are many re-negotiations of the status quo. Women who’ve spent years focusing on their families who now need/crave a space for their own wants and ambitions (much to the bewilderment of their families).

I have friends whose marriages have been tested in ways in which they never imagined, facing situations they assumed happened to ‘other people’. Couples that seemed perfect are fracturing, pulled in different directions by the realisation that neither is willing to compromise anymore. It’s really quite distressing and my own marriage is certainly not immune from the pandemic of midlife crises. Conversely, realising that something you thought was unbreakable is actually quite fragile makes you treat it with a lot more care. I think that the best way to negotiate this brave new world of adult kids and competing desires is to be really really kind.

To yourself, to your lover, to your friends, to the lovely person making you a lifesaving coffee at 6.30 in the morning. New things, new directions, new people are so very very shiny. We all want what we don’t have. Got kids? Well now you crave a career. Got a career? All you want is a baby. Married? Playing the field looks damn attractive. Single? You just want to settle down with a solid human being.

I propose we have our new beginning, but we adjust and adapt, communicating our desires, we bring people with us and create a new life in our old world. You may really need a completely new beginning and explosively blowing up your life might be the best way to do it. But to quote ‘The Sunscreen Song’ (see how old I am J) ‘The older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young’.

How to reclaim your mental energy and not give it away

One of my most important go-to strategies to make the most of the day ahead, is to set the mood, by a creating a mindset of ‘good intentions’

A morning intention helps prime your subconscious mind to know what to expect today. If we wake up asking ‘what will go wrong today?’, well guess what, things will go wrong … because you pre-ordained it!

Instead of affirming stress and looking for it, affirm ease, peace and harmony so your subconscious mind expects it.

Ninety per cent of our habits come from this very simple thought process ...powerful huh? Just starting on the right footing results in a 90 per cent chance of having a better day rather than a not so good day. I know where my thoughts are first thing in the morning!

This we can control – what happens ‘out there’ we cannot. We can only choose to make that call as to whether we allow those events to affect us, or not, so ease this process by having that ‘intention’ of a good day.

To be more effective in communication and avoiding conflict is another key strategy to assist in reclaiming your mental energy so learn to slow things down, and that means, your responses. Too much of society today is focused on that ‘urgent culture’, where we need to respond NOW, immediately and quickly.

Ask yourself, if the world will stop if I take a few deep breaths (great for the vagus nerve which regulates your nervous system to keep calm under stress), take the time to pause and give yourself that moment to consider a response rather than jump into a reaction.

Don’t rush your responses. Avoid being fearful of having to fill that moment of silence that comes from a pause. Take control of you, your energy and listen with the intent to understand. When we take our time, we take the sting out of the situation and in turn protect our mental energy.

And finally, stay in your lane! When you step out of your lane and into someone else’s, you are giving your power to that person, their narrative and therefore stripping you of energy. Instead of giving our energy away, create a safe space of listening with the intent to understand, be present and hold space.

Validate that you have heard what the other person has shared, like ‘that must have been so upsetting for you’ and allow them to share without judgement or pressure. Always ask permission if you have an idea or thoughts about what to do and seek their permission, ask the question ‘what do you need from me right now?’. That is showing support, empathy and compassion.

Reclaiming your mental energy is in your control. Learn to master these very simple strategies and you will move towards a more peaceful existence.

Does lip filler make you a better kisser?

The hot question on everyone’s lips.

According to Dr Vivek Eranki, CEO of Cosmetique, the most common question asked of the nurses relating to lip filler isn’t will it hurt, how long will it last, or how much will it cost – it is – will it make me a better kisser.

“According to our patients, not only does lip filler enhance the appearance of your lips, it also increases volume, definition and structure which enhances self-confidence.

“The other question our nurses are often asked is, when can I kiss my partner again,” Dr Eranki added.

“The answer is, you should wait at least 24 hours after having your lip filler treatment and there are a few reasons why.”

Wait 24 hours before kissing

“Lip filler involves putting a fine needle through your skin. While it only feels like a small pin prick, it still pierces the skin. It is important to avoid anything that could cause infection or inflammation for up to 24 hours,” Dr Eranki said.

Let your lips settle

“It is important to let your filler settle. Doing this will allow enough time for the lip filler to fully integrate with the lip tissue. Kissing can place pressure on the lips and this can potentially cause the filler to migrate.

“While not common, it is best to avoid any activities which can move the filler around and cause unevenness. The last thing you want is to experience is unevenness in the lips because you couldn’t hold off giving your partner a passionate kiss.”

What if I can’t wait

“Filler migration is rare but it can happen, especially if you give your partner a hard kiss, hard enough to move the filler around so that more of it is on one side of your lip than the other,” Dr Eranki said.

“If this happens, we can address the issue by adding more filler to the other side of the lip to help even things out.

“Lip filler can also travel past the upper lip to above the Cupid’s bow, creating fullness above the lip. This is not ideal. In situations like this, we need to undertake urgent restorative action and dissolve the migrated filler and start over.”

MOBILE VITAMIN DRIPS VARICOSE VEINS WEIGHTLOSS

Nourish from within Varicose and Spider Vein Treatment

Feeling burnt out when it’s only March? As much as we like to try, when it comes to prioritising our health above all, it can easily fall below life’s endless list of commitments from work to family.

With perpetually busy lifestyles, we Gold Coasters sometimes need to carve time out for our self-care rituals. Drip IV Australia makes it easier to incorporate IV vitamin therapy into wellness regimes, with registered nurses available to treat clients in their home, hotel or office in as little as 30-60 minutes.

Keeping hydrated and nourished at the cellular level is essential to aid our cells in performing biological processes. Your body contains trillions of cells playing various roles, keeping you alive, thinking, moving and communicating with the world around you.

When your body is fuelled with vitamins, minerals and amino acids, this regulates cell function which may assist with energy levels and mood while supporting the immune system.

Drip IV is Australia’s first and leading IV vitamin service specialising in intravenous vitamin infusions and intramuscular booster shots. IV vitamin treatments deliver nutrients directly to the body via the bloodstream to allow for optimal bioavailability.

Our registered nurses provide complimentary consultations and tailor infusions to individual wellness goals.

Drip IV is offering Get it readers $70 off your first vitamin infusion when you mention the magazine. For a free consultation or to book a vitamin drip, call Drip IV on 1300 374 748 or visit www.dripiv.com.au. Mobile and in-clinic services are available.

There are many reasons why people develop varicose and spider veins. The most common cause is genetic – if you have a family history of veins then you are more likely to develop them. Pregnancy, weight gain and lifestyle can also all contribute to the appearance of your veins.

Varicose veins are usually blue or purple and bulge above the skin. Spider veins are often red and are much finer with no bulging. When you have veins there is always a possibility that you may have underlying vein issues which are contributing to the veins you can see on the surface. At your initial consultation with the Varicose Vein Clinic, Dr Paul or Dr Jamie-Lea will perform an ultrasound scan to investigate the veins under the surface and develop an appropriate treatment plan based on the findings of the scan.

Our initial consultation has a fee of $250 and you will get approximately half of this back from Medicare. We treat all sorts of veins including, leg veins, vulval veins, hand veins and breast veins. The Varicose Vein Clinic was established in 2008 and we have literally thousands of happy clients.

Make 2023 your year to finally do something about your veins. There is no need to put up with achy, unsightly, varicose or spider veins anymore.

Weight Loss Surgery

Being overweight or obese can be one of the most frustrating health problems we face. As well as affecting self-esteem, mental health, contributing to low energy, it has major detrimental effects leading to many medical problems and a shorter life-span.

It can also affect the health of children born to overweight mothers. We all know how difficult it can be to lose weight with diet & excercise regimes & even medications. In fact, research shows that an obese person has an extremely low chance, less than 1%, of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight with conservative measures.

Weight loss surgery is the only proven method to provide long term weight loss in obese patients, with sustained dramatic results compared to all medical, endoscopic & other therapies. Weight loss surgery has been shown to eliminate or dramatically improve many medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, arthritis, migraines and has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of at least 13 types of cancer.

Surgery for weight loss is extremely safe, with very little impact on a patient’s life. The procedures are keyhole, with an overnight stay and patients often only require a few days off work. There are many different types of weight loss procedure, and all suit different patients for a variety of reasons.

At the Surgery Gold Coast Weight Loss Surgery Clinic, Dr Jason Free and his highly experienced & dedicated team have helped thousands of people over the last 10 years with their weight loss journey.

Set Your Intention

Every new beginning starts with intention.

Setting your intention is a commitment. It may be an end result, a milestone or a goal. It allows you to create space to enjoy the journey and be present as you move through towards realising your intention.

When it comes to nutrition and eating smarter, there are many factors that make “food” harder than the exercise to implement as a new routine however the key here is preparation. When you plan and prepare you are much less likely to reach for those treat items. Pre and post-workout food can play a critical role for your workout routine. Fuelling prior to have the energy to perform, followed by nourishing and replenishing the body post workout will set you apart if you master this component. Post-workout is truly the most optimal time for nutrition to allow you to maximise your energy balances and weight management.

Here are some key supporting lifestyle factors:

1. Sleep

It seems so simple, but for many it is not. Sleep is where your body recovers, processes, and delivers many nutrients to the cellular level. Consistency in the time you go to bed and sleep is more important than the total hours slept. In saying that, a concerted effort at getting 8 hours sleep daily is certainly a great plan. Your body and the circadian rhythm it follows does things in sequence so sleeping earlier in the evening rather than sleeping in later in the mornings is a better general rule.

2. Alcohol

Refreshing, stress relieving, rewarding are words I could describe for having or not having a drink in your nutrition plan. Nothing needs to be forever, it’s more a change for now and monitor the effects positive or otherwise to your system. If nothing else, avoiding alcohol consumption will enhance point 1 above. Enhance your sleep quality and that all important regeneration of muscles, cells and overall connectedness in body & mind.

3. Reflection

Stop, stand, study. Learning to pause, breathe and look inward will put you in good stead daily and weekly. If something has gone amiss or could be done better, then the sooner you pick this up and find a new path or just get back on the bandwagon the better. Be critical but don’t beat yourself up. You have an intention, you are trying your best, but can you do better?

4. Find something that makes you happy

The best way to stick to your fitness plan is to find something you enjoy doing, that brings a smile to your face. That’s why we love reformer Pilates – it’s a challenge and it’s always interesting.

We offer different types of classes to cater for all needs from reformer beginner to intermediate, reformer strength, reformer HIIT, reformer FIT along with small group Pilates and private sessions.

Every journey will have ups and downs. Make the best choices with what is in front of you.

Finding Friends

in Adulthood

The How-To Guide

If you’re struggling to find your ‘tribe’ in adulthood, you’re not alone – for many women, finding and maintaining solid friendships can be a challenge as life gets in the way. Balancing careers, family and other commitments, how can we also make time for these relationships and forge meaningful friendships that stick? We talk to psychologist Patrea O’Donoghue to get her tips for reaching out, connecting and making it last.

While movies and television are filled with depictions of friendship bonds that start in kindergarten, the reality is that life often pulls us in different directions. Even if we have got close bonds with university or highschool friends, we may not always be able to rely solely on these connections to fill our cups – so how exactly do you make new friends in adulthood?

Patrea O’Donoghue, Brisbane-based psychologist, has both professional and first-hand advice on the matter of making friends and keeping them.

1. Why do you think new friendships drop off at a certain age?

When people are younger there are natural avenues for meeting new friends: school, sports or other hobbies and activities, tertiary studies, work. As we get older, some of those natural structures for meeting new people are not so obviously woven into our lives. As such, we need to be more proactive in making new connections.

2. Do you feel it is a myth that we won’t make quality friendships at a later age?

Absolutely! Yes, the longevity of long-term friends from school can be wonderful. However, when people make friends as Above: Patrea O’Donoghue, Psychologist

GET IT March 2023 16

adults, they are connecting on a different level to the friends they’ve met through their earlier years. These friendships can be as a result of shared goals, values, and life direction.

3. What are some common challenges women face making new friends?

In their desire to make connections, some women may risk opening up too much without the solid foundation of knowing how that disclosure will be respected. Challenges may include a sensitivity to rejection, navigating existing commitments, managing expectations of what is reasonable in a friendship and how often to make contact.

4. Why are friendships so important for our mental health and well-being?

Research seems to indicate that loneliness is as dangerous for a person’s health as smoking – it also shows that being socially active is one of the three key factors

for healthy brain ageing. Friendships help in providing support to get through challenging times. True friends can keep us grounded and call us out on our behaviour – if we are willing to be open to that feedback, that can be such a great gift to us – to evolve to be a better version of ourselves.

5. What’s realistic to expect out of friendships in adulthood?

We need to communicate our needs, yet there is no obligation on the part of the other person to meet that need. We can make a request, but expecting any other person to meet that need is likely to end in disappointment. When those friendships are in the early stage or coming across something not faced previously in that relationship, the individuals are entering new territory and there is no guarantee or road map as to how to navigate this new terrain. It is helpful to adopt an openness and willingness to explore ways to connect that honour our values.

Patrea’s Top 5 Tips for Making Friends Beyond 30

1. Don’t wait for your social life to arrive at your door – be willing to initiate contact.

2. Be open to attending events alone – you’re likely to be more inclined to meet new people and introduce yourself.

3. Stay off your phone! If you feel the need to bring something with you to look at, try a book (which can also become a talking point).

4. Attend networking events within your field of work which benefits you both professionally and personally.

5. Smile, be approachable and explore small talk with the intention of finding common interests.

Patrea & Julia – Friends in Their 50s

“My friend Julia is an educator and we met at a UQ presentation in 2016. I attended by myself, as did Julia. I saw her by herself and thought she seemed approachable, so I went up to her in the social part after the main speaker event.

Our friendship is great. We call each other for catch ups, and Julia stayed with us last night as we had an early start to the beach this morning for a breathwork and ice bath experience! Julia and I love the beach,

pottering around markets, catching up at each other’s place for meals.

I have made a number of really good friends beyond the age of 30 (one of whom is my partner!). I have met these people through business events, swimming clubs, training programs and speed dating. I believe it is important for people to continue to form friendships at every age – and they might just become one of your best friends!”

We caught up with Finlay ahead of his time here in Australia, sharing with us, “Kilted Yoga encompasses some of my ideals but it draws from the Forrest, Hatha and Ashtanga lineages of yoga,” he explains, “A big part of my work is helping beginners find a practice that works for them and enables a way to navigate injury in a way that feels physically rewarding.”

Each class will begin with breathwork, followed by a warm-up and sequences that will leave you charged up for the rest of your weekend, with Finlay’s sessions showcasing the breathtaking locations across Waterloo Station, an iconic homestay on the outskirts of Glen Innes with deep-running Scottish heritage.

“People can expect to laugh and learn and meet conventional yoga poses flipped to get the most out of them”, Finlay tells us, “It’s less about how it looks and more about how it feels!”

Clear your heart and mind, get your body into gear and capture the spirit of Scotland Downunder with the help of your talented host Finlay. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are fully catered for your retreat day, plus special guest speakers and plenty of opportunity to explore the beautiful property.

“The retreat is the perfect downtime before the festival where guests can take in the stunning surroundings, and work closely with me,” Finlay adds, “Clean air, good food, refreshments and entertainment – all set to gear shift you into the weekend ahead!”

Though Waterloo Station’s luxury accommodation is booked out, for those looking to truly immerse themselves, they are offering an area with amenities exclusively for those attending the day retreat, providing you with a unique Celtic Festival experience.

Festival attendees can also catch Finlay and his Kilted Yoga demonstrations and workshops at the Australian Standing Stones on Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 May (see official program for all details), including an attempt at the biggest Kilted Yoga gathering in the Southern Hemisphere (don’t forget your kilt and a good sense of humour!).

With the 2023 Australian Celtic Festival just around the corner, why not bring your friends and family together for an unforgettable weekend, including a welcome concert, street parades and much more.

The Magic of Sardinia

On a mission to bring Sardinian style to Australian homes, La Sarda Home founder Giuliana Manca takes us on a journey to the heart of Sardinia, a region that truly celebrates its culture, craftsmanship and community.

Within the Province of Oristano is the well-known fishing town of Cabras, and this is where Giuliana Manca’s Sardinian story begins.

“My home town is called Cabras, just 10 minutes from the capital of the province. It’s a well-known fishing village – generations of fishermen have grown up here and still fish the local lake to this day,” Giuliana shares, “There’s such a strong culture of passing on these core skills and traditions – textiles, rug-making, carpet weaving and other agricultural work are all highly valued and respected.”

Long before launching La Sarda Home, Australia’s premiere online boutique for luxury Sardinian homewares, Giuliana had identified that these very skills and

manufacturing practices were something that needed to be shared with the world.

“It was just a natural progression for me to bring these creations to the Australian market, there’s simply nothing else like them – quality, style, storytelling, whether it’s a vase or a piece of jewellery, these beautiful pieces transport you to this incredible island region.”

Working with several local artisans to transport their creations down under, Giuliana reflects on the cultural factors that have allowed creativity to thrive.

“Sardinia is one of the ‘Blue Zones’ of the world, known for the longevity of its people. A big part of this comes down to not only the quality of food and lifestyle but the connection, the camaraderie and the community,” she explains, “Everyone comes together almost monthly for religious festivals – not a weekend goes by it seems that they aren’t celebrating!”

Hosted each year within the province of Oristano is the Corsa degli Scalzi, a procession dating back to the 17th century which honours Saint Salvatore. On the first

Where Culture & Creativity Converge

Saturday of September, 900 male runners adorn white robes and tunics and run barefoot from Santa Maria Assunta Church in Cabras (Giuliana’s home town) to San Salvatore di Sinis, all carrying the image of Saint Salvatore – an impressive sight which culminates in a town-wide celebration with plenty of food, wine and festivities.

“It’s the perfect time to visit – the town just comes alive, and you can really see the generational bonding – fathers, sons and grandsons run together – my own father ran this in the 60s and 70s,” Giuliana recalls, “People gather from around the world to witness it, a moment in time that you’ll remember forever.”

2022 was the biggest tourist season for Sardinia to date, attracting families, backpackers and beyond from all walks of life.

“I’m excited that even the lesser-known areas of Sardinia are getting their moment in the spotlight now – it’s exactly why I launched La Sarda Home, I want to support the artists that have made creation a part of their life and ensure these traditional ways of production can continue to thrive,” Giuliana adds.

La Sarda founder Giuliana Manca

Long before they reach Australian homes, the curated selection of La Sarda Home products have been handcrafted by proud local artisans, often female-led small businesses for whom creativity runs in their blood.

“Their home and their workspace are one and the same – it’s completely a natural part of life to express, to teach and to tell stories through their craft,” Giuliana tells us, “One artisan I work with is called Isabella – she’s 92, and her daughter and niece have continued on the business alongside her. Isabella is there, still weaving and using the same looms she was taught on as a young girl – as a Sardinian woman living in Australia, giving a platform to these female industries is so important to me.”

“Every item that goes online at La Sarda Home is one I’m proud to share, I too feel

the sense of pride that the creators do, and I want that feeling to be passed on to every one of our customers,” Giuliana says, “This is a totally unique retail experience –whether you invest in one of our ceramics or rugs, Sardinian style is carried through from the product all the way to the packaging. These are pieces of culture, pieces of history, and I’m so honoured that I can showcase Sardinia in this way.”

Giuliana’s ‘Simply Sardinian’ La Sarda Home range is available to explore and shop exclusively online, with new pieces added regularly. Sourced from a place where festivals, food, coastline and culture collide, the perfect addition to your home awaits.

Phone addicts what would you give up for your mobile phone?

How much do you rely on your mobile phone? And what do you rely on it for? Well, according to a new survey, a surprising number of young Aussie adults would rather give up life essentials like brushing their teeth and showering – even having sex – than part with their phones.

Digital telco Circles Life surveyed Australians aged 18-35 to understand today’s mobile phone behaviours and attitudes. In true Aussie spirit, questions around toilet selfies, intoxicated phone calls and risqué texts were met with startling honesty, as well as some more topical subjects around the cost of living, with half of the respondents considering switching carriers in search of cheaper phone plans.

More than half of Australian adults couldn’t go a day without their mobile phone. In fact, one in three Australian adults would go without sex for a week rather than their phone for a day, and one-quarter would go without a car for a week.

Women were more likely to sacrifice sex for a week rather than their phone for a day (37 per cent compared to 27 per cent men), while men were willing to forego brushing their teeth (15 per cent compared to 8 per cent of women) or showering (12 per cent compared to 7 per cent of women) for their phone.

When it came to cringeworthy phone faux pas, Circles Life research also revealed 61 per cent of Aussies admitted to taking a call or selfie while on the toilet; 41 per cent have accidentally screenshotted a conversation and sent it back to the same person; 37 per cent have called or texted an ex while

intoxicated and 26 per cent have texted or sent a risqué picture to the wrong person.

Other shockingly common phone habits from the research findings included:

• 73 per cent of Australians have had to wait before eating until a photo of the food has been taken, and close to half have asked someone to wait before eating so they could snap a photo.

• Around one in five think they’re known for sharing private messages or inappropriate content.

• More than half of Australian adults play video games at least weekly, with a quarter playing daily, and half believe that playing video games has improved their problem solving and technical skills.

• On average, Australians spend 3.6 hours a day on their phone; more than a third spend over 4 hours each day on their phone; and almost a quarter are spending more than 5 hours a day on their phone.

Australians pay an average of $63 a month for their mobile phone/data plan, and when asked about phone bills, more than a third feel their phone bill is too high. Half of those surveyed have considered switching carriers because of cost-ofliving pressures, and 68 per cent are tired of phone plans getting more expensive each year.

Food to fuel a positive mindset

With more than 4 million Australians suffering from mental illness each year, there’s no denying we could all benefit from incorporating more of these mood-boosting foods in our diet. Here, Accredited Practising Dietitian Kamyra La Fauci shares some of the top foods that may help combat the blues and boost your mood – according to science.

Oily fish

Salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines are all great sources of omega-3, an essential fatty acid that’s crucial for our brain, nervous system and for cell growth. According to research, omega-3 may reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression and also lower the risk of developing them in the first instance.

Plus, fish is also a great source of B12, a vitamin known to produce mood-enhancing neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.

As our bodies cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids on their own, they must be consumed through the foods we eat, or from supplements. To reap the mood-boosting benefits, aim to consume oily fish 2-3 times each week.

Yoghurt and fermented foods

Foods like yoghurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut (particularly shelf varieties) all contain probiotics, which are live microorganisms known as ‘beneficial bacteria’. Probiotics not only improve digestion and build immunity, but also support the growth of good bacteria in our gut (aka our microbiome).

How does this influence mood? Put simply, our gut and brain communicate with each other (aka the gut-brain axis) by the vagus nerve and by chemical signals called neurotransmitters. Research has shown

that eating probiotic foods not only support gut health but can also influence our brain and overall mood by improving symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Pretty fascinating, right?

So next time you’re at the shops, be sure to add these mood-boosters to your shopping cart. Note: not all fermented foods have this effect – unfortunately beer and wine don’t count!

Fruits and vegetables

Fruit and veggies offer a number of health benefits, so it’s no surprise they’ve been linked to lower rates of stress, depression, and other mood disorders as well. While it’s not completely understood, researchers believe it could be the antioxidants responsible for elevating mood. Regardless, fruit and veggies are also a great source of vitamins and minerals plus they’re also a great fibre source to support a healthy gut. When it comes to boosting mood, some standout fruit and veg to add to your shopping list include bananas, berries, and dark leafy veg such as rocket, Bok choy or kale.

Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds are nutritional powerhouses, rich in plant-based proteins, healthy fats, and fibre. According to research, it turns out they’re also great for our mood, too! In a 10-year study containing over 15000 participants, those who consumed a moderate intake of nuts were found to have a 23 per cent lower risk of depression.

Plus, they’re also a great source of tryptophan – especially almonds, cashews and walnuts – an amino acid needed to produce serotonin; a chemical known to boost mood.

In summary, there are a number of foods you can add to your diet to boost your mood, and overall health. This said, it’s always important to also take care of your mood and mental health by managing stress, getting adequate sleep, exercising regularly and also seeking support from your GP when needed.

Stop Restarting your Fitness Journey

When it comes to fitness and health, in particular weight loss, it’s common to see the all or nothing approach. We are constantly marketed extreme fad diets and quick fixes that require an extremely strict approach that’s unsustainable. So, lets shift this thought process and focus on balance and doing the best we can over perfection.

1. Stop Categorising Food as Good or Bad: Labelling a food as ‘bad’ is automatically attaching a level of guilt if you are to consume this food. It is setting yourself up for failure by knowing you can never have that food without feeling guilty or as if you have fallen off the wagon. Instead, think of it as a sometimes food and if you consume it, enjoy and move on. Thinking of food as fuel rather than good or bad will lead to a better relationship with your nutrition and overall lifestyle.

2. Stop the Cheat Day Mindset: If you want to enjoy a pizza and a glass of wine or go out for a nice dinner with friends don’t

consider it a “cheat” meal. The word alone implies that you are doing something wrong and again attaches guilt to the meal. It can lead to binges and trying to eat as much as you possibly can before getting back into diet mode. Your diet should be balanced enough that you don’t feel deprived and as though you have to “cheat” on your goals.

3. Stop Aiming for Perfection: Think 80 per cent whole foods, 20 per cent soul foods. This means if you want to have a few squares of chocolate at night or a take-out meal once a week go for it. Think big picture, if you’re fuelling yourself with wholesome foods 80-90 per cent of your time, that’s amazing. Allowing yourself a glass of wine here and there will mean you are much less likely to drink a whole bottle in one go because you aren’t depriving yourself.

4. Ditch the Fad Diets or Food Rules: Don’t attach any rules to how you should be eating. Nourish your body don’t punish it. Find an enjoyable and realistic way of eating that you can maintain long term!

5. Exercise in a Way that is Enjoyable: If you hate running don’t run, replace it with something you actually enjoy and can stick to. We want to make exercise a part of our lifestyle not something we dread.

6. Eat Foods you Enjoy and Fit

Your Lifestyle: Get creative with your food and get the family involved. Maybe try a new recipe each week and get creative in the kitchen. If you are enjoying the foods, you are eating the chances of maintaining a healthy lifestyle will be some much higher.

7. Be Aware of your Thoughts: If you feel yourself start to slip into the all or nothing mindset take note and try to flip your thoughts. For example, switch “I had a burger out and ruined all of my progress, I may as well eat whatever I want and start fresh Monday” to “I really enjoyed that meal out and am ready to fuel my body with nutrient dense, whole foods for the rest of the day”.

1. Place the water with the sugar in a pot and bring to the boil, simmer for 5 mins.

2. Mix the nuts, sultanas, spices, lemon and orange grind together with the sugar and water mixture. Add small amounts of flour until the ingredients bind together, shaping them like a Christmas Tree.

3. If you like, add approximately a ⅓ of a cup of Vin Cotto (Wine Must) which makes the mixture darker, but will require additional flower to bind the mixture.

4. Bake in a moderate oven, approximately 160°C for 20-30 mins.

5. Once cooled the biscuits can be decorated with icing sugar and a few drops of lemon juice, piped around the biscuits to resemble Christmas Tree decorations.

Australia’s top workouts revealed

There is no doubt we are spoilt for choice when it comes to workouts in Australia. There are so many concepts, from strength training to bungee fitness to aerial yoga.

“The thing about fitness is that there are so many ways to train, and unless you are training with a specific goal in mind or with a particular injury, any type of workout will be beneficial in one way or another,” says Ben Lucas, celebrity trainer and founder of Flow Athletic

’The key is to choose something that you enjoy, or a community that you enjoy, because if you see your workout as fun, you are more likely to stick with it. Additionally, make sure it is convenient. If you are not near a fitness studio, try an online workout.”

Here are some of the top workouts trending in Australia right now.

Hybrid training

There are so many benefits to this type of workout, from not getting bored, to the benefits of both working on your cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength.

Studies show that strength training can help rev your metabolism for up to 38 hours post workout which means you can keep losing weight long after your session is done, whereas an indoor cycle class is great for helping you sweat up a storm and work on your overall cardiovascular fitness.

BFT

BFT is one workout that is taking the world by storm. Created and founded by Cameron Falloon, a former strength and conditioning coach for international soccer teams and AFL teams, BFT workouts are backed by science and get some serious results. Join a BFT and you will not only experience lifechanging results, but be welcomed into an irresistible community and fitness family.

BFT workouts are programmed into 8-9 week progression blocks, so members can work at and improve specific skills. Each block cycles through 13 workout styles, covering strength, cardio, balance and more (even a bit of boxing)! After each training block, the focus and mode of each workout will change to avoid a plateau or burnout.

UBX (pronounced “you-box”) Boxing with a Difference

UBX started with one aim in mind: to give everyone the opportunity to train like a boxer. Their success came from their ability to rethink boxing and rethink group training in a way that gives members access to a unique mix of boxing and strength training in an ultra-flexible format that removes class timetables and bookings altogether.

Their training methodology was inspired by Co-founder, and four-time world champion boxer, Danny Green, who uses a combination of boxing skills and drills, high impact, explosive training and functional strength to stay at his peak. Workout consists of 12 rounds of boxing and strength training. Six of the rounds include boxing exercises, whether that’s bagwork or one-on-one padwork with a coach. The other six rounds include a combination of functional strength, cardio and conditioning movements.

During a workout, you get one-on-one time with the coaches to work on form, technique and do pad-work. UBX use thousands of exercises in unlimited combinations to provide a new workout everyday.

Connected fitness

There is no doubt that the connected fitness market becomes more popular every year and there is an Australian brand at the forefront of the trend.

Vitruvian is one of the most innovative pieces of tech the world has ever seen when it comes to connected fitness. It acts as an entire home gym in the form of a slim, carbon fibre platform that can easily slide under a bed. Not only does it track every workout via the app to ensure users can keep progressing, but it also has the capability for the user lift up to 200KG.

Vitruvian is powered by AI algorithms that constantly respond to how you move. The patented technology includes the Vitruvian app which gives users access to 200+ exercises, classes curated by elite fitness couches, goal-oriented programs, data tracking and performance insights.

Last year they placed first in the AFR’s Most Innovative Companies for manufacturing and consumer goods.

Therapy Fitness

Therapy Fitness is an innovative new concept that has just launched on the Gold Coast which is co-founded by international fitness expert Emma Masters.

While they have many innovative classes, one of the favourites is Connect which combines a Pilates-fusion class while stripping the stresses of your day away in an infrared heated studio. Here you will meet yourself on the mat while candlelight flickers and bodies move in unison. Expect light weight resistance and cardio bursts married with deep stretching and mindfulness.

Therapy Fitness is the first tri-concept fitness boutique on the Gold Coast which features three fully immersive studios under one roof! Each workout is designed with a specific mood in mind so members are encouraged to choose their workout based on how they feel that day.

Samsara

Samsara is a beautiful day-spa style space on the Gold Coast which is all about individualisation and personalisation. While they do offer classes and have infrared saunas, their key focus is on personalised programs.

As such, every new member receives personalised programming which is reviewed every six weeks to allow for life’s changes – as life and our bodies are constantly changing, it is so important to ensure the direction of the programming does too.

Samsara’s ethos is a product of founder Belinda’s thoughtful approach to both the body and mind connection – exercise and weight loss – as well as her own personal discovery of how our past stories and emotions create the body and health we have today.
