You’re a winner baby!

I have just spent a week with my mother-in-law.

My mother-in-law was an absolutely fierce card player. Games of 500 with friends extended well into the night. She was an amazing seamstress – she sewed her daughter’s wedding dress and the whole family has been gifted intricate colourful quilts – which are works of art in their own right. As a primary school teacher for over 40 years, she taught, loved, (yelled at), and inspired literally thousands of kids over her time (she has 142 ‘Best Teacher’ mugs to prove it!).

My clever, beautiful, driven mother-in-law spent her entire adult life trapped in a cycle of ‘I need to lose weight’, ‘Thank God I’ve lost weight’, and ‘Oh my God! I’ve put on weight’.

She tried Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Lean Cuisine, Curves and any number of ridiculous fad diets. This was accompanied by vicious derogatory self talk. If only she had more bloody willpower! If only she could keep the weight off! She hated photos of herself and when pictured with a new grandchild she would see, not the cherubic baby, but the chubbiness of her arms. Over her time her body has ranged from a size 12 to a size 24. Her body, ironically at this point, is now a size 10. I say ironically because although her body has finally achieved the holy grail of an approved numberher mind has flown far, far away. She can, when calm, recall her children but her grandchildren have retreated into the mist. She ranges between benign confusion and hot aggressive frustration. I can’t ask her, but I would think that one of her biggest regrets would be the sheer volume of time, effort, thought and energy spent, thinking about weight, trying to lose weight, desperately hoping not to put on weight and berating herself for being fat.

Think about what we could achieve if we just let go of the mental load of our BMI.

So, in the spirit of body positivity, I’d like you to take my exclusive, patented, ‘Get It Mag’ Quiz:

1. Do you have a body (YES/NO)

2. Does it work? (YES/NO/SOMETIMES)

3. Would it work better if you moved it more and fed it less? (YES/NO/D’OH)

If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of the above questions –congratulations!! You are a winner! In the random genetic lottery that is the million to one chance of you being born at all you have won first place!! You’ve got one body, one mind. Go rejoice in the miracle of sinews and synapses that makes up the unique you. Win. Win.

Simple steps to regain control

Anxiety is when we try to predict (or think about) any possible future threats. The pre-frontal cortex helps us to plan ahead but if we are struggling to predict what might happen, we try to work out all possible scenarios.

Dee Hardy Shifting Tides Counselling

There are many ways that we can deal with anxiety. And not forgetting that anxiety looks different for everyone. Aside from talking therapy/counselling, there are ways that we can begin to help ourselves.

Make a list!

Make a list of things that you can take action with that have been worrying you. Writing down your worries and fears can be a great way of realising that you might have been catastrophising your concerns. Plus, taking action can help you to feel more in control. If you have too many things to do and are feeling overwhelmed, look at what can you delegate or do another day.

Breath

Get the look you’ve always wanted without going under the knife

A contoured chin and jawline is a well-defined look that many people covet.

According to Dr Vivek Eranki, CEO of Cosmetique, thanks to the latest innovations in injectable treatments, a more defined jawline is now far more achievable than most people realise.

“There is no need to go under the knife and have irreversible risky surgery, injectables will deliver the same result without the expense, risk and worry. The look is achieved with chin and jaw filler.

How jaw fillers work

“Jaw fillers are dermal fillers that get you the look you want by adding shape, volume and definition to the jawline,” Dr Eranki said.

“They can restore lost volume and add structural support to the cheek and lower face area giving a more youthful, well defined and balanced jawline.

“Because the treatment is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure, there is no down time and no scalpels involved. You don’t have to spend weeks bandaged up, looking like a train wreck!

“You get immediately noticeable results in the time required for your lunch break with just a bit of redness that will go away in a couple of days. The effects can last up to three years and can be adjusted as needed.”

“The beauty of jaw filler is that you can adjust it as needed. My personal recommendation is to gradually progress to your desired aesthetic result. This means, start with a small volume and add to it as you desire. This also helps you ‘maintain’ your desired look by ‘adding to it when and as needed.”

Benefits of Jaw filler

“If you want a more defined look, to give your jawline a sharper angle, make your jawline more symmetrical or simply achieve a more youthful appearance by reducing jawline sagging, jaw filler is definitely a good solution,” Dr Eranki said.

Breathing exercises can help to calm us down when we begin to feel anxious. Breathing in for the count of four, holding for four and breathing out for eight can begin to calm down the body. As we count, we are focusing on the breath and the count which can help to get our thinking brains back online. This simple and effective process of ‘slowing’ things down, is being gentle on your nervous system, allowing room for better processing of thoughts.

Practice mindfulness

Being mindful simply means noticing the things around us from moment to moment to allow us to get back in touch with our senses. Being in each moment takes practice and starting with a few minutes a day can help to slow down the busy anxious thoughts.

Eat healthily

Healthy eating and cutting down on alcohol and caffeine can be steps towards lessening anxious feelings, as coffee and alcohol are stimulants and serve to increase anxiety. Eating food that can help us to regulate mood can all help. This includes eggs, brazil nuts, oily fish and yoghurt.

Keep a diary of thoughts and emotions

Doing this can help to work out which areas of our lives are causing the most worries and anxiety. Journaling can be cathartic too and can help to get our worries out onto paper, almost like getting the pieces of the puzzle out of their ‘box’, your brain, onto a larger surface so you can see things clearly.

Downsize your home,upsize your lifestyle

Active over 50s looking for a life with less maintenance, lower bills and more time to do the things they love are flocking to resort style communities that offer them the chance to improve their financial position without compromising on lifestyle.

Demand for resort-style living is growing rapidly, and with fewer developments coming to market thanks to COVID bottlenecking the building industry, finding a well-appointed new home in a tempting location can feel like searching for a unicorn.

The world class lifestyle mecca of the Gold Coast is a sought-after destination for over 50s from all around Australia and Seachange Riverside Coomera has been a standout choice since the development launched in 2018.

Seachange Lifestyle Resort homeowners frequently cite being drawn to the spacious ‘lock and leave’ homes, amazing facilities, fully maintained grounds and coveted Gold Coast location. These features, along

with substantial caravan and boat parking areas for homeowners, are exceptionally appealing to those eager to hit the road or take flight for jaunts further afield.

In good news for prospective buyers, the final properties at Seachange Riverside Coomera, which include the last premium riverfront homes to be built, are about to be released.

Two architecturally designed riverfront homes, and four premium double storey homes with stunning mountain views, will be the last brand-new properties available at the over 50s resort.

Located on the banks of the Coomera River, the new riverfront homes offer the ultimate in comfort with two luxurious master suites, a third bedroom, and living areas that flow onto a spacious deck designed to maximise beautiful water views.

Seachange Lifestyle Resort Sales and Marketing Manager Sally Morrison said the new properties were the largest singlestorey homes to be built at the community.

“We’re really excited to bring these particular lots to the market as they offer

some of the best views in the resort… directly up the Coomera River,” Sally said.

The other 3 bedroom homes are double storey and face the Hinterland – but residents need not worry about negotiating stairs as three of these properties feature a lift for ease and convenience.

The double level homes will have stunning balcony alfresco areas on the top floor, with a desirable open outlook.

“These will be an ideal choice for someone coming from a bigger property who doesn’t want to downsize their living area or open their door to their neighbour’s back fence. They’ll also get a beautiful big space with plenty of room for guests to come and stay and to entertain,” Sally said.

All homes come complete with premium finishes and appliances included as standard to ensure that each home is a luxurious sanctuary and a fitting reward for a lifetime of hard work.

Seachange Riverside Coomera residents Jan and Graeme Douglas have been busy adding their personal touches to their two bedroom, two bathroom, two storey house. It’s the first

double storey home they’ve owned, and they are still thrilled with their choice.

“We were never concerned that it was on two levels,” Graeme said. “We looked at it, we loved it and we thought why not?”

The decision to downsize should not mean having to compromise on anything – and that includes comfortable living spaces.

The couple moved from a single-level, 4 bedroom house. The floor area was comparable with their new Seachange home, which also features two bathrooms and a powder room, plus a double garage with storage at the rear. However, instead of an unwieldy yard to maintain, they have a compact private outdoor space and access to fabulous amenities and services both in the resort and nearby.

Fellow residents Lyn and Bryan Evans fell in love with the location in 2017 when they stayed in an Airbnb on the grounds of what was to become the five star over 50s resort. Lyn said she was particularly delighted to find the builders had incorporated much of the property’s original homestead in the design and layout of the resort. “They’ve used

whatever they can in the work here including stonework, rocks, timber, the brickwork in the driveway and in the River House. You can see it everywhere you look.

“Even the billiards table in the River House is from the original homestead. I’m so glad they have used everything they could – it really means something.”

Lyn said her favourite place was the River House and she likes nothing better than whiling away the days there looking out at the river.

All Seachange Lifestyle Resorts are strategically located on the basis that they are unique with easy access to community facilities.

Riverside Coomera is no exception. The resort also features a five star Country Club in addition to the River House, which is filled with facilities so that you can make that change and love the way you live.

The boutique community is limited to 124 premium homes.

Seachange Riverside is available to inspect by appointment.

“WE LOOKED AT IT, WE LOVED IT AND WE THOUGHT WHY NOT?”

“The moment I put paint to canvas, I knew this was my calling.”

With her CONNECTED partnership with Murkani officially launched, we chat to Aboriginal artist, Gold Coast local and visual storyteller Daisy Hill to get a behind-thescenes insight into her creative process and the experience of transforming her art into jewellery.

1. How did your collection with Murkani come about, and what drew you to them as a label?

In December last year, I was gifted a Murkani necklace by my friend and immediately fell in love with the brand. It has been a dream of mine for a long time to have my art reimagined on jewellery, so I reached out to Kiralee McNamara with the idea of a collaboration. I knew that storytelling was a shared passion for both of us and felt that combining my art designs with Kiralee’s jewellery designs would be a match made in heaven!

2. Tell us about your career as an artist, where did you get started?

Initially, painting was more of a hobby and creative outlet for me. I painted as a form of therapy, a way for me to connect to my identity and heal life experiences. Through my paintings, I’m sharing my story, my journey, my passion, my gift and my purpose.

For so many years I was selling other people’s products and making other people’s brands look good but always dreamed of doing it for myself one day. I never quite knew exactly what that would be or how that looked but I always felt it in my gut. I knew I had a gift; I just hadn’t fully tapped into it yet. The moment I put paint to canvas, I knew this was my calling.

3. Tell us about your CONNECTED collaboration, and how did you settle on this as your theme?

Art is all about resonating with a story and feeling that sense of connection to a piece. When creating the artworks for the pieces in this collection, my aim was to use elements and symbols that connect the wearer closer to themselves, to Mother Earth and to their loved ones.

In celebration of our First Nations people, this collection was conceived to honour the cultural traditions and knowledge that has been passed between generations for thousands of years. I feel so honoured to have my original artworks featured on these beautiful Murkani pendants and hope the wearer can connect with their meanings and carry these stories with them on their own journey. As with any piece of art, I hope the wearer will treasure their CONNECTED necklace for many years to come and maybe even pass it on for future generations to enjoy.

4. As a proud descendant of the Muruwari people, how do you balance showcasing your own style and staying true to the traditions and storytellings of your community?

I am completely self-taught and paint intuitively. My art style is more modern and contemporary which means I share my own personal and unique interpretation of particular symbols and stories. My paintings are inspired and influenced by my childhood, growing up on Bundjalung/ Yugambeh Country, by the ocean and in the hinterland. Fascinated by the beauty of the sky, ocean, sun and sand, I paint to express my gratitude and acknowledge the Country on which I walk, live and breathe.

It’s important to note every First Nations person has their own unique connection with the stories of our land and will choose to interpret and share these in a way that is meant to be shared by them.

5. What’s next on the career horizon for you?

I have already been so fortunate to collaborate with so many wonderful Australian brands. Through these collaborations, I’ve been able to give back to so many wonderful Indigenous charities and organisations who are doing incredible work with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. I still have a few more exciting collaborations to come this year so stay tuned!

Iron

Key To Heart Failure Patient Wellbeing

Heart failure is a major health concern for older Australians, estimated to claim 61,000 lives each year. More than half a million Australians are diagnosed with chronic heart failure, of which, 158,000 will require hospitalisation.

Heart failure occurs when your heart is not working well enough to pump blood around to your organs and tissue within your body. It can result from conditions such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, heart valve defects, viral infection, or alcohol misuse. Heart failure patients can experience fatigue, shortness of breath, swelling and a racing heart, and these symptoms are often made worse by iron deficiency.

According to Cardiologist Associate Professor John Amerena, many patients attribute these symptoms to their recent heart failure episode, unaware that iron deficiency can be a contributing factor.

Around fifty per cent of heart failure patients will be diagnosed with relative or absolute iron deficiency with and without anaemia. Iron is essential for overall wellbeing it helps your red blood cells carry oxygen to your organs. Iron deficiency occurs when your body has insufficient iron stores and can no longer make enough red blood cells.

“It’s quite common and we think it’s probably due to decreased absorption, as oral iron is not well absorbed in patients with heart failure” said Assoc Prof Amerena.

If iron is low, patients often feel lousy, tired and breathless. If it’s replaced, they usually feel better with improved symptoms and quality of life.”

“We recommend replacing it up intravenously if iron stores are low in patients with heart failure with reduced heart function. Oral tablets are not effective, but intravenously, it can have consistent benefits and make patients feel better.”

Assoc Prof Amerena said heart failure patients’ chance of survival decreased with each subsequent hospitalisation, with research showing a 25 per cent chance of death within one year of their first hospital visit. Intravenous iron replacement therapy has been shown to reduce hospitalisation, and Assoc Prof Amerena says medical researchers also hope to show it improves long term health and death rates, and that this is currently being studied. Mindfulness: The solution to overcoming your barriers

With the everyday hustle and bustle consuming us more than ever, it’s easy to feel busy yet not actually productive. The same can be said for our health; there is more information, gyms, workouts online, videos and bootcamps available to us yet as a country, Australia is unhealthier than ever. We start a new diet or program, get overcome with all the information and sheer stress of the extra load onto our lives, break down and become even worse than before. They key is to learn the principles of mindfulness and learning to become aware of the present moment.

Key Benefits:

Relieve stress, treat heart disease by lowering cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, improve sleep, increase productivity, improve structure of day, being truly present in key situations.

What is Mindfulness:

Mindfulness is the psychological process of purposely bringing one’s attention to experiences occurring in the present moment without judgement, which one can develop through the practice of meditation and through other training.

What are the key aspects of Mindfulness?

Intention: what do you wish to gain from practicing mindfulness?

Attention: gaining a greater perspective to what’s going on around you

Attitude: paying attention to certain attitudes or emotions you and the people around you feel.

How do I start being mindful?

Becoming mindful or practicing mindfulness activities can be diverse and individual as to what works best for the person. One key activity is to create a space or a time where no outside distractions can occur. Within this space or time, the individual has the time to process all the day’s issues, thoughts and things to do in a calm, rational environment. The key to this time is to look at these thoughts objectively, not letting

these thoughts become feelings or emotive states. The ability to detach from these thoughts and look at the best possible solution or way to move forward. To enter a meditative state, try using deep breathing exercises, physical exercise such as running or lifting weights, walking along the beach, lying under a tree in the sun are all perfect ways to enter this “mental calm” state. Having a morning routine is a perfect example of creating a mindful space: writing your daily to-do list, your intentions for the day, the things you are grateful for in life, all create perspective for what will occur in the next 24 hours. Exercising early will get blood flowing to the brain and around the body, releasing endorphins that also make us “feel good”.

By using these spaces or times, we can progressively work through the situations that confront us daily and enable us to find clarity to continue moving forward.

BlissfulByron retreat

If you want to holiday like a Hemsworth, then look no further than the luxurious 28 Degrees Byron Bay. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like a pampered star, then this is the place for you.

And it’s not just the Hemsworths who you may rub shoulders with here. Elvis filmmaker Baz Luhrmann wrote much of the screenplay here at 28 Degrees, and many other famous creatives have found that their work has flourished in this intimate resort. It must be all that sea air.

At 28 Degrees there’s a plethora of inspiration and much-needed peace to be found. The spiritual magic of Australia’s most easterly point weaves its way into life here, whether it’s the breathtakingly beautiful sweep of white sand and wide blue ocean, or the hushed beauty of the walking tracks to the famous lighthouse.

GET IT I TRAVEL GET IT November 2022 26

The beauty of the Bundjalung region is easily matched by the private sanctuary of the retreat. Staying here is truly a treat for the senses and an escape from the real world. There’s seven luxurious residences to choose from, where you’re invited to switch off and chill out. Byron is a laid-back town, a vibe that echoes within the whitewashed walls of the resort – bare feet and laid back attitudes are welcomed here, in fact, it’s encouraged.

Founded by interior designer, Deb Garske,“the ethos of 28 Degrees is quite simple. I set out to provide the perfect location for a slow-living reset; a haven in the centre of Byron where everything is within walking distance but as soon as you walk through our doors you are transported to a sanctuary.”

And she has delivered her promise, and then some. This is slow travel with a dusting of sparkle. There’s no children, no television, nothing to distract or interrupt you, just a dedication to rest, rejuvenation and a return to self.

All that relaxation can make you work up an appetite: feast on the complimentary breakfast of homemade paleo granola with seasonal fruit compote and organic yoghurt, paired with slow-filtered moonshine coffee or organic teas. It’s a good time to step back, to be mindful, before making your plans for the day.

Take your time to explore – there’s the private plunge pool set in your very own oasis, where you can while away the hours, reading from the carefully curated selection of books or just listening to the sounds of Byron. On your doorstep are the offerings of Byron, from five-star restaurants, laid-back cocktail bars, cafes offering world-class coffees or boutiques such as Spell and Kivari the Label – favourites of the A-listers for that true bohemian Byron look. If you’re lucky enough to visit on a weekend, take a twirl around the markets for some mouthwatering food offerings or to invest in some local art.

When you’ve exhausted yourself at the shops or restaurants, head to the worldfamous beaches. You can try your hand at surfing at one of the many surf schools, or just walk the white miles of sand, uninterrupted by real life and indeed, the 21st century.

Then return home – and it truly feels like a home, or a very generous friend’s home – for a respite from your day’s adventures. Enjoy a cocktail in the pool at sunset before deciding on the evening’s adventures. If you prefer to wind down at night, book an inroom massage to properly help you feel like you’re on holiday, before slipping into the plush linen sheets for the best night’s sleep you’ve ever had.

Prices range from $600–750 per night during off-peak season across the room categories; luxury master, main classic luxury, lighthouse room and plunge pool room. For more information visit 28byronbay.com.au

• 20g parsley, chopped

An impressive twist on the traditional fish and chips, Cory Campbell’s crisp skinned barramundi is a beautiful dish to share with friends and loved ones. If you’re stuck for time, you can prepare the tartare sauce in advance or simply replace it with a premade bottle at the supermarket.

Created by Cory Campbell, Barangaroo House Serves

• 300g mayonnaise

• 30ml apple cider vinegar

• 30g Dijon mustard

• 30ml lemon juice

• 50ml fresh orange juice

• 50ml apple cider vinegar

• 2g shallot, chopped

• Pinch of crushed fennel seeds

• 50g butter

• 2 baby cos lettuce heads

• 16 mint leaves

• 1 lime, zested

• Sea salt and cracked black pepper, to season

Method:

1. Wash Kipfler potatoes and add to a large pot. Cover with water and add generous amount of salt to season. Bring to the boil and turn down heat to simmer. Boil until potatoes are cooked, then remove from water and allow to cool a little.

2. Preheat oven to 200°C. One at a time, squash potatoes flat and place in an oiled baking tray. Drizzle with 100ml olive oil and season with salt and chopped herbs.

3. Place potatoes in oven and roast until the edges are golden and crisp but still soft and fluffy in the centre.

4. Meanwhile, combine onion, parsley, cornichons, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard and lemon juice in bowl and whisk together to make a tartare sauce.

5. To create the citrus salad dressing, combine orange juice, apple cider vinegar, 40ml olive oil, shallot, fennel seeds and salt and pepper to season.

6. Heat fry pan to medium-high heat. Pat the barramundi dry then season with salt and 50ml olive oil. Pour a small amount of oil into pan and wipe it around with kitchen paper. Carefully place barramundi skin-side down into the pan, adding a little pressure to the fish so it doesn’t curl up.
