GIOVANNI TROILO

Cominciamo. Occhi chiusi, mente espansa. Occhi aperti, nessun confine.

Punto 1: sei finito in un sogno. Le montagne davanti a te sono candide di un bianco immacolato, candeggiato, non sono altissime, le puoi scalare e - particolare da non sottostimare – anche ingerire. Sono il sapore, sono il senso dialogante, sono il sale in tavola. Puoi salirci, possono sgretolarsi. Le acque sono arancio, rosa e rosse, cambiano colore, puoi toccarle senza mutarle: loro ti muteranno, sono aliene. Montagne e acque non sono sole, ecco che appaiono le sentinelle, le guardie, i custodi, i punti cardinali, pelle nera, abito retto, perfetto, sguardo immobile. Non ti svegli.

Punto 2: non era un sogno, per nulla. Le montagne sono vere, ma, ugualmente, di sale. Le acque del pantone sono quelle che lo generano. Ebbene sì, sulla mappa esistono, si chiamano Saline di Margherita di Savoia, un prodigio creato da mirabile mano umana che divise le acque, creò i camminamenti perché l’evaporazione in vasca producesse l’alimento, il mare il lavoro. Ed è sempre mano umana che taglia gli abiti, li cuce, produce e anima. Perché le sentinelle, i custodi permangono anche nella versione “realtà”, sono modelli, indossano abiti che cadono al filo di piombo: sono nati prima loro o quello che indossano?

Let’s start. Eyes closed, mind expanded. Eyes open, no borders.

Point 1: you ended up in a dream. The mountains in front of you are white with an immaculate, bleached white, they are not very high, you can climb them and - particular not to be underestimated - even ingest them. They are the flavor, they are the dialoguing meaning, they are the salt on the table. You can get on it, they can crumble. The waters are orange, pink and red, they change color, you can touch them without changing them: they will change you, they are alien. Mountains and waters are not sun, here appear the sentries, the guards, the keepers, the cardinal points, black skin, straight dress, perfect, motionless gaze. You don’t wake up.

Point 2: it wasn’t a dream, not at all. The mountains are real, but still made of salt. The waters of the pantone are those that generate it. Yes, on the map they exist, they are called Saline di Margherita di Savoia, a prodigy created by an admirable human hand that divided the waters, created the walkways so that the evaporation in the tank would produce food, the sea and work. And it is always a human hand that cuts clothes, sews them, produces and animates them. Because the sentries, the keepers also remain in the “reality” version, they are models, they wear clothes that fall to the lead: were they born first or what they wear?

Punto 3: stiamo sfogliando un catalogo, “Landescape”, è la collezione inverno 2020 di un marchio, Hevò. Sono piani ribaltabili, speculari di un viaggio, in “quattro capitoli futuristici dalla terra pugliese”. Ciascun piano non è asintomatico e anzi produce una reazione, con richiesta di messa a fuoco di varchi di tempo e spazio, di percezione, di realtà. Il Fotografo prepara una missione su Marte, divide il paesaggio in griglie di codici binari da Insterstellar, lascia la gravità attiva, ma gravita con il suo sguardo come un invitato in trance a un banchetto allestito in un wormhole. È sveglio, molto sveglio. Eppure fabbrica quello che si direbbe un sogno, immerge i modelli nelle acque pennellate da pittore evanescente, li specchia, li scocca, li mesmerizza, li tiene. La luce è sua. La bellezza si mette all’incanto in un’asta di beni che, invece, sono tutti nostri e il cui filo non è nascosto, non è un codice ma una radice cucita nella terra.

Punto 4: Abbiamo mentito, era tutto un sogno - dicono i fenicotteri rosa. E, adesso, svegliati.

Point 3: we are leafing through a catalog, “Landescape”, it is the winter 2020 collection of a brand, Hevò. They are folding plans, mirror images of a journey, in “four futuristic chapters from the Apulian land”. Each plane is not asymptomatic, and indeed produces a reaction, with a request to focus on gaps in time and space, perception, reality. The Photographer prepares a mission to Mars, divides the landscape into grids of binary codes from Interstellar, leaves gravity on, but gravitates with his gaze like a guest in a trance at a banquet set up in a wormhole. He is awake, very awake. Yet he manufactures what one would call a dream, immerses the models in the brushstroke waters of an evanescent painter, mirrors them, molds them, mesmerizes them, holds them. The light belongs to him. Beauty is enchanted in an auction of goods that, instead, are all ours and whose thread is not hidden, it is not a code but a root sewn into the earth.

Giovanni Troilo è nato a Putignano nel 1977. Laureato in Economia con una laurea in Geografia dello Sviluppo. Regista e fotografo, Troilo si muove tra il mondo del cinema, della televisione, dell’editoria e della pubblicità. Ha iniziato a filmare e scattare fotografie in giovane età; ormai, a quasi vent’anni di distanza, l’elenco dei progetti collaborativi importanti è impressionante. Il lavoro di Troilo è stato pubblicato su Newsweek Japan, Der Spiegel, D La Repubblica, GQ Italy, CNN, Wired Italy, Wired UK, Wired Corea, Wired Germany, Ventiquattro, Wallpaper, GQ Spain, Io Donna, Flair, Sport & Street, Velvet and Urban. Nel 2011 ha diretto Fan Pio, il suo primo lungometraggio, e pubblicato in Germania il suo primo libro, Apulien, premiato come miglior libro fotografico agli International Photography Awards nel 2012. Tra il 2012 e il 2015 Troilo ha diretto per Sky Arte HDFotografi, tre serie di documentari su famosi fotografi italiani e diversi documentari tra cui On The Road - Joe Bastianich Music Tour e Caravaggio Criminale. Nel 2015 con il progetto La Ville Noire, The Dark Heart of Europe è stato premiato People Photographer of the Year ai Sony World Photography Awards. Nel 2016 William Kentridge, Triumphs and Laments, il suo film documentario sull’artista sudafricano William Kentridge, è stato in concorso al Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma e Coeurope, il suo lavoro ambientato in Belgio sull’Europa contemporanea, è stato in concorso all’IDFA e trasmesso su Rai e Arte in Germania e Francia. Nel 2017 dirige The Mystery of the Lost Paintings, serie di 7 documentari per Sky Arts International Hub (UK, ITA, GER), in onda da aprile 2018.Hi film Le ninfee di Monet (B / Arts - Nexo Digital), è stato distribuito in cinema nel novembre 2018, e il suo ultimo film Le due Frida (B / Arts - Nexo Digital - SKY ARTS) è stato distribuito nelle sale nel novembre 2019. Troilo sta attualmente lavorando a due nuovi documentari, al suo secondo lungometraggio e a diversi progetti fotografici.

Giovanni Troilo was born in Putignano in 1977. He graduated in Economics with a degree on Geography of Development.
