GlamourAffair: Ciao Roberto! Qual è il tuo nome d’arte? E perché ? Roberto Gilardoni: Ciao a tutti e grazie per avermi invitato! Il mio attuale nome d’arte è Lady B, che è il nome che adottai quando iniziai a lavorare nel settore dell’intrattenimento notturno 4 anni fa, in origine invece era Berta Zanotti. Il nome Berta Zanotti mi è stato dato dal mio migliore amico, nonché la mia sorella drag, che me lo affibbiò in seguito ad una decisione comune di sceglierci l’una per l’altra i nostri rispettivi nomi d’arte. Così nacque Berta Zanotti. Berta deriva da Roberto e dal fatto che indossavo sempre dei look molto da “zia” e Zanotti perché è il mio brand di scarpe preferito e rappresenta il maggior numero di tacchi presenti nella mia scarpiera. Lady B invece nacque dopo la mia prima serata lavorativa, dove il mio stile, rispetto all’inizio, era già molto cambiato: non più da signorina o “zia”, ma molto più aggressivo e sempre più androgino. Spuntò così il bisogno di trovare un nuovo nome, molto più adatto a ciò che stavo andando a creare sul mio personaggio. E così dopo una settimana di riflessione arrivò l’idea di chiamarmi Lady B: Lady in contrapposizione all’immagine poco femminea che davo, B in onore del mio primo nome.

GlamourAffair: Hi Roberto! What is your stage name? And why ? Roberto Gilardoni: Hi everyone and thank you for inviting me! My current stage name is Lady B, which is the name I adopted when I started working in the night entertainment sector 4 years ago, originally it was Berta Zanotti. The name Berta Zanotti was given to me by my best friend, as well as my drag sister, who gave it to me following a joint decision to choose our respective stage names for each other. Thus was born Berta Zanotti. Berta derives from Roberto and from the fact that I always wore very “aunt” and Zanotti looks because it is my favourite shoe brand and represents the highest number of heels in my shoe rack. Lady B, on the other hand, was born after my first working evening, where my style had already changed a lot since the beginning: no longer as a young lady or “aunt”, but much more aggressive and more androgynous. Thus arose the need to find a new name, much more suitable for what I was going to create more and more about my character. And so after a week of reflection came the idea of calling me Lady B: Lady as opposed to the un-feminine image I gave, B in honor of my first name.

GA: Sei un artista a 360° tra Design, styling, modeling, make up e hairstyling. Qual è lo studio che si nasconde dietro a tutto questo? RG: A livello didattico non esistono degli studi a riguardo, anche perché non ho mai frequentato né l’artistico né scuole di moda, ma il liceo linguistico, durante il quale però make up e moda sono sbocciati come curiosità e divertimento. La mia passione però era il make up, che mi ha portato a scegliere di frequentare due accademie nelle quali ho appreso le tecniche principali e l’uso dei materiali. Con queste basi ho iniziato lo studio sempre più approfondito del mio personaggio attraverso la ricerca, utilizzando app come Pinterest ed Instagram, che mi hanno permesso di osservare una miriade di lavori da cui ho potuto attingere dettagli, ritrasformandoli poi secondo il mio gusto in nuove idee. Ovviamente, come tutti, ho delle figure e dei brand di riferimento su cui “baso” spesso il mio stile: per i costumi per esempio mi ispiro molto allo stile di Thierry Mugler e Gareth Pugh, mentre per il makeup a personaggi come Is She Hungry e Ryan Burke, dai quali estrapolo alcuni dettagli rielaborandoli in base al mio gusto a alla mia fisionomia per ottenere nuove idee.

GA: You are a 360° artist between Design, styling, modeling, make up and hairstyling. What is the study behind all this? RG: On a didactic level, there are no studies on this, also because I have never attended the artistic or fashion schools, but the language high school, during which, however, make up and fashion blossomed as curiosity and fun. My passion, however, was the make up, which led me to choose to attend two academies in which I learned the main techniques and the use of materials. With these bases I began the study of my character more and more through research, using apps such as Pinterest and Instagram, which allowed me to observe a myriad of works from which I was able to draw details, then transforming them according to my taste into new ideas. Obviously, like everyone else, I have reference figures and brands on which I often “base” my style: for costumes, for example, I am very inspired by the style of Thierry Mugler and Gareth Pugh, while for make-up to characters like Is She Hungry and Ryan Burke, from which I extrapolate some details reworking them according to my taste and my physiognomy to get new ideas.

GA: Com’è nata la passione per lo spettacolo e come hai conosciuto il mondo delle Drag Queen? RG: La passione per quelli che sono diventati i miei attuali lavori è nata al liceo come una forma di svago e divertimento, un qualcosa senza “importanza” che però mi faceva sentire libero di espri- mermi. Tutto ciò nacque grazie a youtube, dove ebbi modo di iniziare a conoscere la cultura drag guardando una serie di video del programma americano Rupaul Drag-race, nonché grazie ad Instagram sul quale, seguendo personaggi come Jeffree Star, ho iniziato ad avvicinarmi sempre di più al mondo del make up delle drag queen e dei personaggi eclettici.Se proprio dovessi dire il nome di un personaggio che con la sua immagine ha influito molto sulla nascita del mio alter ego è proprio Jeffree star.

GA: How did your passion for the show come about and how did you get to know the world of Drag Queen? RG: The passion for what has become my current job was born in high school as a form of entertainment and fun, something without “importance” that made me feel free to express myself. All this was born thanks to youtube, where I got to know the drag culture by watching a series of videos of the American program Rupaul Drag-race, as well as thanks to Instagram on which, following characters like Jeffree Star, I started to get closer and closer to the world of drag queen make-up and eclectic characters. If you really had to say the name of a character who with his image has greatly influenced the birth of my alter ego it is Jeffree star.

GA: Ci sono stati dei pregiudizi da superare e quali? Interferi- scono molto sulla tua vita privata? RG: Beh partiamo dal presupposto che secondo il mio onesto parere, quando si inizia questo percorso lavorativo, si firma tacitamente un “contratto” nel quale sottoscriviamo la nostra “solitudine”. Mi spiego meglio. Ci sono una moltitudine di pregiudizi legati al mondo della notte e al mondo drag, tra i più comuni possiamo trovare: l’essere considerati dei mezzi uomini e i pagliacci di turno. Tutti questi fattori ovviamente vanno ad influire poi sulla nostra vita privata, nella quale veniamo spesso allontanati o messi in secondo piano appena si dice “lavoro nel mondo della notte” o “sono una drag queen”. Tutto questo ovviamente avviene per colpa di persone che si basano solo su quello che vedono e sentono, preferendo fermarsi alla “maschera” che ognuno di noi indossa quando saliamo su di un palco, piuttosto che toglierla e provare a vedere chi si cela realmente sotto trucco e lustrini. Io in primis ne sono stato vittima e l’esempio più palese fu con un mio ex fidanzato, che dopo quasi un anno di relazione decise di mollarmi usando come motivazioni il fatto che non voleva che continuassi in questo percorso e che mi truccassi, perché a lui piaceva Roberto, ma non voleva in alcun modo aver a che fare con il mio alter ego, neanche in foto. Ed infatti chiudemmo la relazione. Fortunatamente non può sempre piovere, perché non tutti sono come ho appena descritto. Infatti, dopo cinque anni da solo, ho finalmente trovato un ragazzo che mi apprezza per quello che sono e, per di più, mi sprona a continuare a fare quello che mi fa stare bene.

GA: Were there any prejudices to overcome and which ones? Do they interfere a lot with your private life? RG: Well we start from the assumption that in my honest opinion, when you start this career path, you tacitly sign a “contract” in which we sign our “loneliness”. I’ll explain. There are a multitude of prejudices related to the world of night and to the drag world, among the most common we can find: being considered half men and clowns on duty. All these factors obviously go on to influence our private life, in which we are often pushed away or overshadowed as soon as we say “work in the world of the night” or “I am a drag queen”. All this obviously happens because of people who rely only on what they see and hear, preferring to stop at the “mask” that each of us wears when we go up on a stage, rather than take it off and try to see who really hides under makeup and spangles. First of all, I was a victim of it and the most obvious example was with an ex-boyfriend of mine, who after almost a year of relationship decided to give up using as reasons the fact that he didn’t want me to continue on this path and to wear makeup, because he liked Roberto, but he didn’t want to have anything to do with my alter ego, not even in photos. And in fact we closed the relationship. Fortunately, it cannot always rain, because not everyone is as I have just described. In fact, after five years alone, I finally found a guy who appreciates me for who I am and, moreover, encourages me to continue doing what makes me feel good.

GA: Dove hai la possibilità di esprimerti artisticamente? RG: Durante la mia carriera ho avuto la possibilità di esibirmi in molti locali, italiani ed esteri, ma mai fisso in un unico locale. Ho sempre avuto un’ottima alternanza in location in cui tornavo mensilmente ed altre in cui andavo per una one night. Per esempio, attualmente sono una delle drag resident della serata torinese Qimanji ma, siccome sono in turno due o tre sabati al mese, i restanti me li gestisco a piacimento. I locali dove mi sono esibito più frequente- mente sono situati principalmente nel nord Italia, più precisamente in Lombardia e Liguria, e all’estero in Svizzera.

GA: Where you have the opportunity to express yourself artistically? RG: During my career I had the opportunity to perform in many clubs, Italian and foreign, but never fixed in a single venue. I have always had an excellent alternation in locations where I returned monthly and others where I went for a one night. For example, I am currently one of the drag resident of the Turin evening Qimanji but, since I am on shift two or three Saturdays a month, I manage the rest of them at will. The places where I performed most frequently are located mainly in northern Italy, more precisely in Lombardy and Liguria, and abroad in Switzerland.

GA: Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri? RG: Molti sono gli obbiettivi che voglio raggiungere. Il primo tra tutti è una costante evoluzione del mio personaggio, sia a livello di make up che di costumi. Un altro obbiettivo è farsi conoscere sempre di più all’estero sia tramite i social e, soprat- tutto, sia a livello lavorativo in locali ed eventi (come ad esempio la Demence di Bruxelles). Per mia vanità invece, come obbiettivo mi piacerebbe realizzare un mio profumo di cui avrei già il nome: Evil Soul. Un profumo intenso, che sappia catturare “l’attenzione” come un dolce invito; infatti come ingredienti mi piacerebbe che si usassero la vaniglia e la rosa. Al di fuori della mia vita notturna invece, essendo io un truccatore, mi piacerebbe ottenere molte più collaborazioni con le case cosmetiche e con le riviste. Infatti vi ringrazio per l’intervista concessa sul vostro magazine e vi saluto!

GA: hat are your future projects? RG: There are many goals that I want to achieve. The first of all is a constant evolution of my character, both in terms of make-up and costumes. Another goal is to make yourself known more and more abroad both through social networks and, above all, at work level in clubs and events (such as the Demence in Brussels). For my vanity, however, as a goal I would like to create my own perfume of which I would already have the name: Evil Soul. An intense perfume that knows how to capture “attention” as a sweet invitation; in fact as ingredients I would like vanilla and rose to be used. Outside of my nightlife however, being a make-up artist, I would like to get a lot more collaborations with cosmetic houses and magazines. In fact, thank you for the interview given on your magazine and I greet you!
