GROWN-UP GIVENCHY
FLAT-OUT STYLE When fat shoes go on show during couture week, you know something is changing. Gone are the sky-high heels of seasons past, and in their place a host of fat shoes combines style and comfort in a way usually unheard of in the world of high fashion. These lace-ups from Save up to 8% by shopping tax free, see page 98
There was a decidedly elegant tone this season at Givenchy, as much-loved designer Riccardo Tisci presented a more ladylike collection than we have come to expect. A casual and punchy aesthetic, often inspired by streetwear, has been Tisci’s leaning for the past few seasons, but his grown-up departure most certainly did not disappoint. Delicate, fowing fabrics were printed with bold natureinspired motifs. Expertly tailored into ftted feminine dresses, these choice textiles were emblazoned with spread butterfy wings, or precisely patterned with vintage style forals. Managing to be at once lovely and edgy, Tisci proves once again that he can do no wrong. hl Givenchy, Berytus Building, Park Avenue, Beirut Central District, +961 (0)1 976276, givenchy.com

A TASTE OF PARIS
WINTER WEAR
Beirut has often been described as the Paris of the East, and along with the French infuences on its culture, visitors can experience a little taste of Paris with a visit to the Ladurée boutique. Since the invention of the Ladurée macaron in the middle of the last century, when pâtissier Pierre Desfontaines frst joined two dainty meringue shells together with ganache, the house has been famous for these delicious creations. While Ladurée ofers far more than just macaroons, these bitesize beauties are what a visit to the store is all about. The recipe remains the same today as it has always been, although new favours pop up all the time. Don’t leave without trying the pistachio variety; this is a sweet treat to remember. hl Ladurée, 128 Foch Street, Beirut Central District, +961 (0)1 992922, laduree.com
The Italian label behind some of the best coats to ever grace a catwalk, Max Mara once again meets expectations this season. All styles, from trench coats to padded jackets, feature touches of masculine tailoring, and the materials, such as herringbone tweed and Prince of Wales tartan, are the stars of the show. The boxy, oversized waistcoat can be balanced by a sleek leather pencil skirt, while grey-on-grey layering enhances the diferent weaves and knits found throughout this season’s collection. Look out for brightly coloured woollen jackets that will lift your mood in darkest months, or opt for an absolute classic with the label’s camel coloured coats. hl Max Mara, 174 Marfaa, Abdel Malek Street, Beirut Central District, +961 (0)1 960152, maxmara.com

Sophie’s Choice in the Beirut Souks is one of the city’s most enticing concept stores. Opened in 2009 by Sophie Salame, it is known for its carefully selected fashion, art and design goods. Over the past 20 years Salame has helped launch brands including Céline and Roberto Cavalli onto the Lebanese market and played a key role in founding Lebanese retail giant Aishtï. Hannah Lewis spoke to the stylish entrepreneur about her store’s fashion philosophy
‘At Sophie’s Choice, we are a small, close team of around seven. My most important role is to make sure that every client is treated in a personal way. ‘I have witnessed the reconstruction of Beirut over the past decades and have watched as the city became more open to the fashion market. I became very interested in this, which is how I started working at Aishtï. Five years ago, when I decided to open my own store, I chose this area because it is a well-known part of Beirut, the centre of Lebanon. There was so much renewal before I opened that it hasn’t changed much since then. ‘We sell clothes, bags, shoes, sunglasses, jewellery and Fornasetti candles. Lebanese designers are popular across the world for their beautifully timeless designs. Frances Wasem profles the names to know
Lessons In Glamour The rise of the Middle Eastern designer on the international circuit and the move towards timeless glamour in both fashion and beauty have been among the biggest style stories of the last decade. Craftsmanship, feminine draping, jewel colours and heady embellishments, the signatures of Middle Eastern designs, have long
remained on the sidelines while trends such as minimalism and cutting-edge cool took over fashion. But with a rising tide of style followers longing for a more classic, timeless mode of dress, the Middle Eastern fashion industry’s reputation for pure, unadulterated, Hollywoodstyle glamour has evolved.
48 | F E AT U R E S
Middle Eastern designers are renowned for their love and celebration of femininity, and for using wonderfully luxurious fabrics to emphasise the female form. French actress Emmanuelle Béart, sitting front row at Lebanese designer Elie Saab’s autumn/winter 14/15 ready-to-wear collections in Paris, explained it thus to Nowfashion.com: ‘He likes women. He likes real women … He comes from a country where women have a very special kind of sensuality and you never feel vulgar in Elie Saab, he’s elegant.’ Elie Saab started, like most Lebanese designers, by opening a bespoke atelier; this market is often the frst step for Middle Eastern designers. The self-taught designer, who briefy studied in Paris, opened his studio in 1982 and has since been recognised as an haute couturier by the Fédération Française de la Couture. Lebanon has traditionally been a holiday destination for visitors from the Gulf Arab States because of its relaxed social attitude, close proximity to the Gulf and its wealth of shops – and the money spent by those visitors means that many young and up-and-coming designers turn to bespoke rather than ready-to-wear as the frst rung on the design ladder. Creating a custommade and thus pre-ordered dress with a price tag of thousands of dollars is a safer bet than launching a ready-to-wear collection. As a result, Lebanon has become known as the creative fashion hub of the Middle East: a destination for new designers and bespoke

These include designers such as US-born, Lebanon-raised Rami Kadi, whose line is architectural, elegantly ftted and embellished, and Krikor Jabotian (who worked with Saab before setting up his own atelier at the age of 23), whose embellished chifon designs feel as though they’ve dropped out of a modern version of Doctor Zhivago. A Lebanese designer’s bespoke dress is also less expensive than a traditional Parisian haute couture piece – but no less exquisitely made and certainly with equal levels of craftsmanship. The pure glamour (those layers of foating chifon and expert draping) and unashamed femininity of Lebanese designers appeals to international clients too. Women who love

Lebanese designers are also adept at making their pieces glamorous but accessible, not just the preserve of the lofty atelier but a real style option for all women. Rabih Kayrouz combines gold ‘snake’ cowboy boots with avant-garde cuts for his autumn/winter 14/15 collection. of Krikor Jabotian’s designs are beaded dresses in heady jewel colours, but he also creates jackets and layered chifon in shades of cream. This focus on a timeless sense of femininity also carries itself into the beauty market in Lebanon, with prettily packaged soaps made with olive oil, lavender and honey harking back to a bygone era. The latest Lebanese interiors pieces showcase the country’s varied, rapidly evolving contemporary aesthetic, reports Stephen Doig
Sculptural edges. Gleaming brushed metallic fnishes. Splashy, artistic prints and exacting, sleek lines. These interiors pieces – from textiles to furniture – could take pride of place at any interior design fair from Milan to Manhattan, which makes the fact that they can be found in Lebanon and are made by
Lebanese designers all the more interesting. Set aside assumptions that Middle Eastern design is focused on the traditional; this new crop of interiors names proves otherwise. Lebanon’s position between the Orient and the West meant that the country embraced silks from the East and incorporated them into

its own sumptuous textiles heritage. Thanks to interior designer Nada Debs, this rich craft history is being reworked for a contemporary audience. The Lebanese native, who after years of studying abroad set up her furniture and textile brand in Beirut in 2000, aims to honour the craft of her homeland in an innovative way. Her East & East range is perhaps the one that most embodies the spirit of keeping this history alive – with a contemporary tweak here and there. The Arabesque range of chairs and stools is entirely handcrafted and comes in a Middle Eastern cut-out pattern design and rich, jewel-toned fabrics; mosaic-patterned mirrors and tables shine with mother-of-pearl inlays as the traditional Arabic aesthetic is given a new lease of life. It’s a similar story at Bokja, a homeware brand founded in 2000 by Huda Baroudi and Maria Hibri to promote the traditional designs of Lebanese textiles. The focus at Bokja is on

the artistry of the fabric itself and each piece is woven by Beirut craftspeople. Bokja is sold internationally and a celebrity client base is swiftly evolving around the beautifully crafted fabric, pattern and print, spliced together in a patchwork-style aesthetic and applied to chairs, footstools and cushions. The founders have even revamped a classic Eames chair in colourful Bokja designs. The efect is joyful and vibrant; from exuberant forals to lavish swirls and graphic mosaics, Bokja brings a touch of traditional Middle Eastern craft to a 21st-century audience of design connoisseurs. Profts are used to support and educate women in Beirut too; the company’s roots are frmly embedded in Lebanese culture. Milan, and her store ofers international names alongside her own work. Living Space III is a sculptural piece composed of various blocks to lounge on as well as storage space and table surfaces; Chekerdjian’s thoroughly contemporary designs also include gleaming, spherical tables in shining brass and sleek, dome-shaped lamps. Her industrial-styled urban store in the city’s port district is helping to reinvigorate an overlooked Beirut neighbourhood. This trailblazing approach to interior design is also very much in evidence at Carwan, the innovative art and lifestyle space in Beirut that was founded as a gallery in 2010 by architects Pascale Wakim and Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte. Alongside exhibitions, the pair curate design pieces that are sold in-house, harnessing talent from Lebanon as well as further afeld. Lebanon is establishing itself as a creative hub for Middle Eastern artists – and a focus for their growing international appeal. Karen Munnis discovers Beirut’s thriving artistic community
PHOTO: ArT ON 56TH
Going Global Over the last decade in Lebanon, what began as a gradual trickle of artistic talent has become a veritable torrent. In 2012, Noha Wadi Moharram opened the Art On 56th gallery, initially to showcase contemporary Lebanese artists to an international market. The gallery is located in a charming, French-era building in Gemmayzeh – a bohemian, on-trend district
in East Beirut that’s rich in cafés, restaurants and luxury shopping boutiques and home to a large community of contemporary artists. Along with Lebanese artists such as painter and sculptor Raf Yedalian, whose work was exhibited at the gallery this September, Art On 56th also showcases other well-known Middle Eastern artists, including Syrian-born

calligrapher Mouneer Al Shaarani. Lebanon has increasingly become a hub for supporting both local and regional artists throughout the Middle East, where they may not have had the opportunity to promote their own work locally. ‘There has been an infux of support for Syrian artists, prominent and up-and-coming, from art galleries and art collectors [in Beirut],’ says Moharram. Joy Mardini is the owner and director of Art Factum, a gallery housed in a renovated steel factory in the industrial Quarantine
district in Beirut. She says that the art scene in Beirut is unique compared to that of other cities. ‘We have so much chaos here, so much instability. Yet we also have so much love, and so much kindness. This love-hate relationship with our country is a constant push into the products of our artists.’ While refections on a turbulent past remain a constant theme, working with new technologies and experimenting with photography and video is becoming more prevalent. This can be seen in much of the contemporary work of both emerging and established artists, such as Beirut-born photographer Caroline Tabet or visual artist Ali Cherri. ‘It’s very nice to see all the transitions of experimentation going on these days in

Beirut. At the same time, they merge with very well-established artists, who are in turn shifting their styles and artistic outcomes to ft the era we are in today,’ says Mardini. Saleh Barakat founded the Agial Art Gallery in the cosmopolitan Ras Beirut district in 1990, and has seen frst-hand how the art scene has evolved over the years. ‘The major diference in the past few years is an increased interest from international institutions and collectors in our local scene,’ he says. ‘There is also a growing patronage in the arts, which will result in a better institutional infrastructure in the near future.’ There is no doubt that international collectors and galleries are increasing the profle of Lebanese artists. ‘Middle Eastern

a strong international appeal for Selma Feriani’s patrons. ‘Lebanese art has been greatly welcomed in the UK, not only as highly conceptual art inspired by both a universal artistic movement and as a window to local Lebanese political and social issues, but it is also regarded as representing the heartbeat of British culture. After all, beauty, politics, social struggle, and the status quo are common ground for discussion and pride among any given nation,’ says Javier Robledo, general manager of Selma Feriani. This international appeal is making Lebanese artists more prominent across the world. Lebanese flmmaker and visual artist Ali Cherri has shown his work at flm festivals around the globe, as well as at major exhibitions and galleries including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Venice Biennale. Cherri graduated from the American University of Beirut with a degree in graphic design and his work combines flm, installation, Above (clockwise from top lef): artist Ali Cherri; Art on 56th gallery; Burj Khalifa III by Ziad Antar; Put your Foot in your Mouth by Pascal Hachem, displayed at the Selme Feriani gallery

performance, silkscreen and print. His 2013 flm The Disquiet, a study of Lebanon themed around the country’s position above several geological fault lines, showed at the Dubai International Film Festival. In 2013, Beirut-born abstract painter and sculptor Saloua Raouda Choucair held her frst UK exhibition at Tate Modern in London. Born in 1916 and prolifc on the Lebanese art scene since the 1940s, Choucair combines
both western and Islamic infuences to create abstract paintings, drawings and sculptures. Infuenced by science, mathematics and Islamic art and poetry, Choucair is also renowned for experimenting with a multitude of materials, and her Tate Modern exhibition focused on sculptures created in wood, metal, stone and fbreglass. ‘I have huge respect for her. She’s a great Lebanese artist and, though her artwork was done a long time ago, she’s still ahead of her time,’ says Moharram. The growth of art galleries and exhibitions and the increased international interest in the proud, tight-knit Lebanese art community is proving Lebanon’s status as a Middle East creative hub.
