ETHICAL ELEGANCE Natural diamonds were formed under immense pressure, deep beneath the earth, anything over a billion years ago. Renowned Austrian crystal company Swarovski has sped up the process with the introduction of Created Diamonds; a pioneering collection of lab-created diamonds set to bring fine jewellery into the future. While mined diamonds are subject to a wealth of environmental and ethical issues, Swarovski Created Diamonds remove these factors by creating real gemstones from diamond ‘seeds’ in laboratory conditions. BEST OF BRITISH This season, Mulberry examines the attraction of opposites: elements from different decades and locations are woven together to create a collection that’s both eccentric and quintessentially British, in keeping with the brand’s DNA. Key styles for autumn/winter include the Harlow (pictured, from €1,150). Defined by its geometric qualities, it has a structured form and double V-flap, and features Mulberry’s signature ring-shaped Rider’s Lock – a motif that evokes the brand’s equestrian roots. Available in a variety of colours and finishes, the Harlow exemplifies Mulberry’s skill at referencing its past and presenting it in a fresh light. grc Mulberry, Seitzergasse 2-4, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 532 0976, mulberry.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 38
DOUBLE TIME Glashütte Original introduced the Senator Cosmopolite in 2015: a timepiece specifically designed for modern travellers, equipped with a state-of-the-art mechanism that displays two time zones at once. This year, the brand has unveiled a new stainless steel Senator Cosmopolite. Like the original red and white gold models, this latest version displays the Glashütte Original Panorama Date and home time, as well as a choice of one of the world’s globalblue.com
35 time zones. Dark blue poire hands, a matte white dial and dark blue alligator leather strap perfectly complement the watch’s 44mm stainless steel case, making the new Senator Cosmopolite a sophisticated timepiece for the most stylish globetrotters. hl Glashütte Original, Kohlmarkt 4, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 532 1310, glashuette-original.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 38

SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY Kim Jones’s final collection as men’s artistic director of Louis Vuitton taps into the spirit of travel and discovery that has always been central to the luxury brand, contextualised through the idea of a geographical and historical overview. Coats, jackets, trousers and shorts feature a print made from aerial photographs taken during a helicopter ride across Kenya, and designs have diverse references to exploration, seen in homages to the American rodeo and the winters of Siberia. Sportswear influences are prevalent throughout, in addition to novel takes on the LV monogram. New bag styles include reinvented takes on the iconic Louis Vuitton Speedy in the form of a cross-body for men, a backpack and two messenger bag models. grc Louis Vuitton, Tuchlauben 3-7, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 533 6151, louisvuitton.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 38
If you’re on the hunt for a new digital camera to take on your travels, look no further than the recently unveiled Fujifilm XF10. Available in two colourways, this lightweight compact camera is also equipped with a Fujinon lens which can be counted on to produce crystal clear high-resolution images. Fujifilm’s Film Simulation and Advanced Filter modes provide a wide range of options to enhance images, and the camera is also equipped with 4K Movie and High Speed Video functions. The Bluetooth capability allows you to easily transfer images to your smartphone, making this new model a great on-the-go option. grc Foto Köberl, Münzgrabenstrasse 53, 8010 Graz, +43 (0)316 846023, fujifilm.eu

TIME FOR ACTION Autumn/winter 2018/19 ushers in a high-performance Calvin Klein collection alongside the new Performance monogram. Activewear essentials are defined by technical qualities: a sports bra is made from a wicking fabric, elastic cuffs on a bomber jacket help retain heat, while a hooded fleece pullover for men uses fast-dry technology. The collection is inspired by heritage sportswear and Americana yet also references the iconic Calvin Klein underwear branding in its deep waistbands. Highlights include a unisex poncho and a reversible parka. grc Calvin Klein, Giga Sport, Andechsstrasse 85, 6020 Innsbruck, +43 (0)512 341770, calvinklein.com

BAGS OF STYLE Aigner’s autumn/winter collection is based on the idea of a Wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, and thus draws upon a plethora of styles and fashion eras. Aigner’s signature bag, the Cybill, is presented in two new versions this season, inspired by the art deco movement and 1970s nonchalance. The Cybill Fiera is an ocelot ponyskin model (pictured, €1,200), while the Cybill Velluto comes in a choice of three different shades of velvet. Other key bags include the Felice, Aigner’s take on the saddle bag, the classic, structured Alia and the Lola cross-body. grc Aigner, Alter Markt 7, 5020 Salzburg, +43 (0)662 849010, aignermunich.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 44

T
he notion of concept stores is a relatively new global retail phenomenon, yet it has established a firm foothold in Austria over recent years. The Viennese fashion and lifestyle boutique Song, which opened in 1998, can be counted as one of the forerunners: it paved the way for a whole fleet of fascinating concept stores to open across the country. Designed as a world of its own, each concept store is based around a specific theme and sets out to offer an exclusive shopping experience. Often established as a reaction to mass consumerism and large chains, these
stores set out to provide a different offering. Die Sellerie, which is located in the creative neighbourhood of Vienna’s seventh district, is one such boutique. ‘We wanted to position ourselves as a Viennese alternative to the big players of home decor and create a cosy space where you can enjoy your day,’ explain founders Patrick Bauer and Georg Leditzky, who are both graphic designers. Home accessories, stationery and beautiful gifts produced by niche European names sit alongside the brand’s own line of locally made stationery products.

Less than five minutes’ walk away you’ll find Volta, which follows a similar principles: this contemporary design store is a celebration of craftsmanship. Volta carries minimalist design pieces for the home, sourced from across the world, including Welsh ceramics, Austrian beeswax candles, brass pieces from Norway and organic tea from Denmark. What began in Vienna has since expanded beyond the capital and today concept stores can be found in other cities. Daniel Matt founded Resort in 2013, bringing a new store format to the town of Innsbruck. He originally Above (right): Resort store, Innsbruck
planned to open in Vienna, but ‘fell in love’ with the Innsbruck location. ‘Nothing like this type of store existed in western Austria, so the decision came quite naturally,’ he recalls. Keen to encourage customers on a voyage of discovery, Matt organised Resort into themed areas. ‘I try to showcase lifestyle in all its daily aspects,’ he says. ‘But I’m always on the hunt for the new, or the unexpected.’ The boutique stocks niche brands across beauty, home and lifestyle, including Binchotan, Cire Trudon and Timorous Beasties, alongside Austrian labels such as Susanne Kaufmann and WienerBlut.
Like Resort in Innsbruck, Tash Living in Graz, opened in 2015 by Natascha Galler, was founded to fill a gap in the market. ‘It was really time to enrich the offer here with such a store,’ she explains. Inspired by experiences in Istanbul of shopping paired with coffee, the boutique, coffee house and interior design studio flow harmoniously together to form one entity under one roof. Products are presented according to the notion of designwelt (design world); carefully thought out and personally selected by the founder, these change on a regular basis.
Despite being different in concept and location, these stores share a common outlook. Ethical and sustainable approaches, for example, are valued principles. ‘I always care about natural materials, little to no packaging and fair production with good quality. And I look for labels from Europe to avoid unnecessarily long delivery routes,’ says Galler. The team at Die Sellerie also seek out products that have not been mass produced in unethical conditions. ‘It’s a constant selfimposed filter mechanism to guarantee our customers the constant high level of quality

they expect from us,’ they explain. Ethics and quality go hand in hand. Besides creating a space for specialised fashion and design labels in Austria’s retail landscape, these concept stores go beyond simply providing a retail experience. Song in Vienna hosts exhibitions, creating a hybrid space that combines fashion and art. At Tash Living, the studio aspect allows customers to enjoy a bespoke experience. ‘It is a useful addition for customers who are not only looking for one furniture piece from the store but would like an individual custom-made concept or Above: Song boutique, Vienna
wish to be advised in interior matters,’ explains Galler. Die Sellerie offers prop and set styling services – and you might get advice on more than just shopping. The team is keen to offer you top tips about their city, as they explain: ‘We love to chat about Vienna, its sights and the most bohemian places around town.’ Whether you visit Die Sellerie, Volta or Song in Vienna, Resort in Innsbruck or Tash Living in Graz, when you cross the threshold you step into a carefully curated world where you’ll enjoy an experience that is designed to be exclusive and personal

TIGER OF SWEDEN Tiger of Sweden was founded in 1903 as a tailoring brand for men and women. Today, the brand’s designers draw on their sartorial heritage while adding a modern, Swedish twist to traditional tailoring. Inspired by the brand’s archives and by Swedish and international film, this season’s collection seeks to bring creativity to suiting techniques and silhouettes. One of the earliest Tiger of Sweden suits, the 1903, has been revamped – recalling the brand’s history as the first company to make ready-to-wear suiting in its home country. If you’re looking for tailoring with a contemporary edge, this top Scandinavian brand is not to be missed. CAFÉ SACHER Enter classic coffeehouse Café Sacher to feel as though you’ve stepped back 150 years. The opulence of decades gone by has not been lost here; this elegant setting features marbletopped tables, rich red velvet upholstery and silk wallpaper. Order Sachertorte chocolate cake, a famous Austrian classic, and you will be impeccably served by waiting staff dressed in traditional black uniforms with white aprons and caps. The original version served at Café Sacher is finished with apricot jam and chocolate icing, and is topped with the official Hotel Sacher chocolate seal – served with whipped cream, it’s a perfect accompaniment to your Viennese coffee. Enjoy your Sachertorte in other cities in Austria too, with Café Sacher branches in Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz. Café Sacher, Schwarzstrasse 5-7, 5020 Salzburg, +43 (0)662 88977 2384, sacher.com

TOMMY HILFIGER Drawing on its roots, Tommy Hilfiger presents a menswear collection that radiates American spirit for autumn/winter 2018/19. The brand’s archive serves as inspiration, seen in revisits of the Tommy Crest, which was first introduced in 1985. The brand’s instantly recognisable red, white and blue is a recurring colour scheme throughout the collection, counterbalanced by designs that use a more muted, earthy, military-inspired palette. Key Tommy Hilfiger pieces this season include fresh takes on classics such as rugby shirts or puffer jackets.

JULIUS HIRTZBERGER

NATURAL BEAUTY For her autumn/winter 2018/19 collection, Austrian designer Lena Hoschek looked to the botanical gardens of London, Berlin and Vienna.
