DISTINGUISHED DESIGN In 2018, Longchamp celebrated its 70th anniversary and unveiled Kendall Jenner as its new ambassador. And 2019 looks set to be another superb year for brand, with its new shop-in-shop at Steffl The Department Store in Vienna, which brings its distinguished designs to this renowned venue. Now run by members of the second and third generations of the Cassegrain family, Longchamp displays unparalleled leather craftsmanship. Highlights to look out for this spring/ summer include the Amazone and Cavalcade bags. grc Steffl The Department Store, Kärntner Strasse 19, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 9305 6635, longchamp.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 38

Every year Graf von Faber Castell produces a special Pen of the Year range and for 2019 the collection is inspired by samurai. Known for their precision, perfection and principles, the warriors embody some of the same qualities that the German pen manufacturer is famous for. The pictured fountain pen (€3,500) features a magnolia wood barrel – the same material used to create the sheath and handle of a warrior’s sword – as well as engraved Japanese characters and an 18-carat gold nib with ruthenium coating. A ballpoint pen, as well as two Black Edition designs, complete the collection. grc Hackenbuchner, Getreidegasse 12, 5020 Salzburg, +43 (0)662 843362, graf-von-faber-castell.at FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 44

BREGUET BLUE Breguet presents the Classique 5177 Grand Feu Blue Enamel watch (€23,600), which features the brand’s self-winding 777Q mechanical calibre. In an exciting twist, Breguet’s signature blue, a shade usually used for the hands of the watch, features on the dial here and the enamel was carefully researched and fired at 800 degrees Celsius. The dark blue alligator strap emphasises the colour of the dial, while the 18-carat white gold case and rhodium-plated steel hands contrast beautifully. The reproduced calligraphy, originally drawn by Abraham-Louis Breguet, adds a beautiful finishing touch to this state-of-the-art watch. grc Breguet, Kohlmarkt 4, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 533 8782, breguet.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 38

SUMMER STYLE Strellson’s spring/summer 2019 collection is all about light colours and materials. Poplin, light gabardine, linen and jersey are just some of the fabrics used in the menswear designs. Key styles include summer-ready outerwear, tailoring and casual knits, while stripes, plaids and prints are the preferred patterns of the season. Accessories highlights include the new Sutton bag range, in shades of cognac, and the summery Trial trainers collection, available in suede and nylon or nappa. grc Kastner & Öhler, Sackstrasse 7–13, 8010 Graz, +43 (0)316 8700, strellson.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 47 globalblue.com

GOOD SPORT Chopard pays tribute to the classic Happy Sport watch with the Happy Sport Oval, 25 years after the original timepiece was first introduced. Updated with an oval dial and paired with the classic bracelet design from 1993, it is equipped with a 09.01-C mechanical self-winding movement. The galet (meaning pebble) bracelet features intricately interwoven links that allow for flexible movement. Choose from the 18-carat rose gold model or the pictured stainless steel version with a diamond-set bezel (€13,900). The ingenious design of Chopard’s Happy Sport timepiece range sits at a meeting point between sporty style and elegance. grc Chopard, Kohlmarkt 16, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 533 719719, chopard.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 38

Ludwig Reiter’s signature style combines exquisite craftsmanship with a sophisticated, modern aesthetic. The brand often references local people and the Golden Hour range takes inspiration from the philosophy of Ella Schönburg, founder of Austrian jewellery brand Eambrandis. Pieces include slip-ons, trainers, rubber boots and bags crafted from gold chevraux leather, used to unique effect. The pictured Pamina sandals (€339) are among our favourite styles, with their fine straps, soft insoles made of suede leather and understated silver buckle. grc Ludwig Reiter, Sackstrasse 12, 8010 Graz, +43 (0)316 825416, ludwig-reiter.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 46 Save up to 15% by shopping tax free, see page 50

FRENCH FLAIR For spring/summer, Sandro’s collection embodies the Parisian style that has long been synonymous with the brand. Founder and artistic director Evelyne Chétrite reinvents classics such as leather jackets, trench coats and polo tops. The effortlessly chic collection includes relaxed tailoring in the form of pinstripe suits and suit jackets, printed silk blouses and lace pieces. Chunky trainers and large banana bags are worn with mididresses, offering a casual edge to outfits. grc Steffl The Department Store, Kärntner Strasse 19, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 930560, sandro-paris.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 38

MASTERPIECE Albert Kriemler, creative director of Akris, has often displayed his love of art in his collections, and for spring/summer 2019 he pays tribute to the late artist Geta Brătescu. Her work, particularly the Magnets photomontage, served as the starting point for the collection. This heartfelt homage has resulted in an elegant range, comprising sophisticated tailoring, floor-length gowns and covetable accessories, which display a mastery of technique and materials. grc Akris, Kohlmarkt 4, 1010 Vienna, +43 (0)1 535 3053, akris.com FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 38

amed for its historic palaces, Lipizzaner horses and exquisite sweet treats, Vienna has not traditionally been regarded as a leading destination for fashion. While the city offers exceptional shopping from some of the biggest international brands, its home-grown talent has remained slightly under the radar on the global stage – until now. The inception of MQ Vienna Fashion Week in 2008 brought a new focus on the city’s modern, contemporary, wearable fashion, which references Vienna’s

past while also looking to the future. Subsequent years have seen a wealth of young Austrian labels go on to achieve acclaim in Vienna and beyond, both via fashion week and through independent routes. Petar Petrov is a leading example of how the city nurtures talent. The Ukrainian-born designer was brought up in Bulgaria and moved to Vienna to study fashion at University of Applied Arts. Here, Petrov found incredible support for his vision and he chose to remain in

Vienna to launch his brand, resisting the pull of leading fashion capitals such as Paris or Milan. Founded in 2009, the label came under the international spotlight in 2018, when stylists, buyers and influencers were pictured sporting Petrov’s elegant, minimalist designs during fashion weeks in New York, Paris and Milan. His eponymous womenswear brand is now stocked by platforms such as Net-a-Porter and Moda Operandi. ‘My passion is designing clothes that create an emotion and desire to

and architecture of Vienna was swept up in the modernist movement. Clean lines and a signature simplicity are seen throughout the brand’s spring/summer 2019 collection, which is ‘a take on the beauty of the simple form contrary to conventional understanding,’ according to Petrov. The combination of luxury and simplicity seems to define many Austrian brands. The goal is understated elegance, using the most exquisite fabrics in a refined and often unexpected way, for clothes that whisper rather than shout. Anelia Peschev subscribes to this philosophy and the Vienna-based designer’s eponymous line has been shown at the city’s fashion week since 2009. ‘First of all, a dress has to surprise me before I can show it to the world to see,’ says Peschev. Using sumptuous silks and opulent jacquards, the brand’s dresses offer a thoroughly modern take on eveningwear. Statement details and volume teamed with classical ballgown styles have made Anelia Peschev a go-to for Vienna’s social set, with the brand’s dresses frequently worn by everyone from politicians to prima ballerinas at the city’s grand balls. Alongside eveningwear,

make women feel beautiful in a fresh, relevant way,’ says Petrov. ‘It is about embracing an aesthetic of effortless elegance and powerful femininity.’ Vienna holds a special place in Petrov’s heart and its influence runs throughout his collections. The city’s architecture and art are a key part of its allure, and serve to constantly inspire his collections. ‘Our designs convey a vision of Viennese modernism,’ he says, referring to the period between 1890 and 1910 when the art, literature, philosophy

Vienna’s new wave of fashion designers create contemporary clothing that respects the past

silk day dresses with pussy-bow details and elegant hemlines were seen throughout the label’s spring/summer 2019 collection, further cementing it as a champion of elegant femininity. The same can also be said of the aptly named Femme Maison, a Viennese womenswear label that creates luxury silk pieces for charismatic, strong women. Heavily influenced by a carefree aesthetic of the 1960s and 70s, the brand is a mixture of relaxed tailoring and easy-to-wear dresses. Terry O’Neill’s iconic 1977 image of Faye Dunaway’s poolside, post-Oscar breakfast in Beverly Hills is often an inspirational starting point for designer Franziska Fürpass-Kermani – with its mixture of 70s nostalgia and effortless glamour, it epitomises the brand. Pieces are handmade using the finest materials at Femme Maison’s small atelier in the city and the team creates seasonal summer and autumn collections as well as bespoke eveningwear and wedding dresses. Dedication to design and craftsmanship is paramount, as is commitment Above (both): Femme Maison spring/summer 2019

to presenting a modern version of timeless style. This is perhaps the key to the success of Vienna’s new wave of fashion designers. In a city that offers so much history and culture, it is crucial to create contemporary clothing that also respects the past. Whether it is the modernist movement, the 1970s or the city’s time-honoured relationship with ballgowns, these emerging brands link past, present and future in bold, exciting new ways. Vienna’s fashion scene is garnering a worldwide reputation for effortless elegance – reflecting the style of its clientele

MÜHLBAUER Milliner Mühlbauer epitomises traditional Austrian craftsmanship. Founded in 1903 in Vienna, the brand is now run by the fourth generation of the Mühlbauer family at its shop in the city’s suburb of Floridsdorf. The small family-run business is making a big impact and counts figures such as Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep and Madonna among its customers. Made collaboratively by dedicated artisans using the best quality materials, each hat offers timeless style and durability.
