IN STORE: YERSE Originally founded in 1964 by Lluís Generó i Domènech to produce knitwear, Yerse has since grown into an international company with a focus on womenswear. Its casual-chic collections, which ofer vintage details with a contemporary feel, are produced four times a year and sold in an evergrowing number of stores in Spain and around the world. Ximena Daneri spoke to creative director Lluís Generó about the family-owned brand’s present, past and future, and its Barcelona fagship
‘I have been the creative director of Yerse since April 2015. My father founded the company 50 years ago, and now I’m so excited and proud to be part of the future of his legacy. Before that, I worked as a fashion and shoe designer for diferent brands such as Antonio Miró, Pons Quintana and Castañer, and in the 1990s I had my own Lluís Generó knitwear brand, making pieces with refned fabrics. I’ve also been creative director and consultant to diferent fashion frms. ‘To think about Yerse and its philosophy is to think about knitwear, which was so important for so many years. After that we expanded to Madrid, and in September 2013 came this store in Barcelona, at the renowned L’Illa Diagonal shopping centre. It’s perfect because the centre is a good ft with the brand’s image and clientele. ‘We’ve overseen the interior

We use the same antique wood, natural materials and carpets made of coconut fbres for a warm and stylish contemporary look appropriate to our brand identity.’ Yerse, L’Illa Diagonal, Avinguda Diagonal 557, 08029 Barcelona, +34 93 321 0635, yerse.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 59

he most important day of a woman’s life has always called for a show-stopping gown, something that reflects her personality while simultaneously wowing the groom (and pleasing his mother). Though it may not be common knowledge, Barcelona has been carving out a name for itself as the ultimate place to discover the latest designer bridalwear. With its 69 77

annual Bridal Fashion Week, and a host of talented designers basing themselves in the city, Barcelona is the perfect place to find your ‘I do’ dress. Spain, best known perhaps for sun, sea and sand, is also the second-largest exporter of bridal fashion after China. Estermaria Laruccia, director of Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week (BBFW), Lef: Yolan Cris Couture capsule bridal collection autumn/winter 2016/17
details just how crucial Barcelona is to Spain’s bridal sector as a whole. ‘Barcelona has a long tradition of textile manufacturing and Catalonia … is the home of some of the most international and powerful companies in the bridal sector,’ she explains. The figures speak for themselves: with a turnover of nearly €1.3bn – 12.9% of the whole textile sector – Spain is the only Western country whose output exceeds domestic demand. An impressive 755,000 wedding dresses are made in Spain each year, and Catalonia’s share of that market is around 42%. With such a vast impact on the bridal industry both in Spain and beyond, Barcelona’s bridalwear designers are certainly worth
discovering, and nowhere was this better evidenced than at this year’s BBFW. From 26 April to 1 May the latest bridal collections from the best Spanish and international labels were unveiled before the world’s media and top buyers, who descended upon the city to find out what brides will be wearing come 2017. With a three-day catwalk event and a subsequent trade show, the crème de la crème of international bridalwear brands, from Pronovias and Jesús Peiró to Justin Alexander, showed off their best designs. Though all manner of bridal fashion was showcased at the event, in terms of overall trends Laruccia highlights ‘a resurgence of purer lines, very soft, lightweight dresses

made from superimposed layers of muslin that create silhouettes that are both sensual and discreet at the same time’. She continues, ‘In general, we’re seeing less gloss and embellishment and more minimalist looks, though just as luxurious, and a reinterpretation of 1970s fashions transformed into a hippie-chic style for the more adventurous.’ Adventurous brides will certainly be drawn to the creations of Barcelona-based brand Yolan Cris. Known for designing a wedding gown for model Nicole Trunfio, as well as bridesmaid dresses for Kim Kardashian’s wedding to Kanye West, it is an excellent choice for the fashionforward. At BBFW 2016 the brand presented an array of captivating and original 70s-inspired gowns. Heavy on texture, looks showed off bold ruffles, modern lace, and feathered and fringed jackets fit for the headline bride at a wedding festival. There were even minidress options for those looking for something to break the mould. ‘A modern bride needs a modern wedding dress,’ say the brand’s

founders, Yolanda and Cristina Pérez. ‘We apply fashion trends to bridal gowns to achieve contemporary designs.’ Comfort is of increasing importance to the modern bride, who wants to be able to show her skills on the dancefloor as well as look demure walking down the aisle. ‘Although

we work with haute-couture techniques, we use the most exclusive and high-quality European fabrics to make our wedding dresses weightless and comfortable,’ explain Yolanda and Cristina. ‘Otherwise, the main thing that moves us is still creating dreams and still thrilling brides-to-be. That’s our main aim!’ Rock-star brides wanting to tie the knot before dashing off on tour with the band need look no further. For simpler, more classic designs, look to Cristina Tamborero, another Barcelona native. Her BBFW 2016 show featured minimalist gowns with subtle hints of beadwork and embellishment; many were cut close to the body, while others displayed a modern take on the full skirt, with added pockets. Her most stunning bridal outfits were the contemporary two-piece options, including an embellished top and floaty miniskirt, and a maxiskirt with beaded lace crop top worn over a plain bandeau. Speaking about Spain’s bridal industry, the designer says, ‘We’ve had lots of good ambassadors and that has converted “Made in Spain” into a phrase with much more value.’ When it comes to the designers who inspire her, Tamborero lists Pronovias and Rosa Clará. ‘Both have managed to grow and teach the whole world about the talent in the Spanish bridal market.’ With their stars on the rise, we’re sure it won’t be long before Cristina Tamborero and her peers at Yolan Cris follow in their footsteps

TABLE TALK Tap into the relaxed Barcelona lifestyle by lingering over an indulgent weekend brunch, says Isabella Redmond Styles
The Spanish are known for their enviably laid-back attitude to life, evidenced by the traditional mid-afternoon siesta and dinners that start late and go on long into the evening, and there are few more enjoyable places to enjoy a lingering weekend brunch – a cross between breakfast and lunch – than Barcelona. Local brunch staples include dishes such as eggs Benedict and spicy baked eggs, alongside plates of French toast or churros – long thin doughnuts dusted with globalblue.com
icing sugar and served with thick hot chocolate. However, there are also plenty of more unusual oferings, from fresh seafood and local Catalan delicacies to sweet creations such as brioche pizza with chocolate and fruit. Cocktails – think spicy Bloody Marys, perhaps – or champagne make the perfect accompaniment, though those who’d rather not indulge are ably catered for with fresh fruit juices and, of course, expertly made cofee, often sourced from local roasteries.

TOTO Toto’s menu may change daily, but fresh, seasonal and often organic local produce is a permanent fxture of the restaurant’s Mediterranean-inspired dishes. With its marble-topped bar, tiled foors and low-hanging glass lamps, the interior provides a masterclass in old-world charm. Brunch is a lively and delicious afair, beginning with a classic Mimosa or Bloody Mary
cocktail or a more wholesome Detox juice, a reviving blend of grapefruit, orange and lemon. Follow this with French toast with cinnamon oranges and yoghurt, say, or Toto’s version of eggs Benedict served with parsnip chips. The particularly ravenous will appreciate the Black Angus beefburger, which is piled high with gorgonzola, roasted apple and caramelised onion. Brunch like a king on muesli with passion fruit yoghurt, berries and toasted almonds or the incredible coconut French toast, served with strawberries and ice cream. Savoury plates include Moroccanstyle baked eggs, and corn fritters with poached eggs, avocado and rocket pesto. The sweet-toothed hotfoot it to Chök for its irresistible chocolates, cakes and doughnuts. Housed within a 116-year-old Modernista building, it has a small seating area which serves as the perfect spot for an indulgent brunch. Try a plate of classic Spanish churros dipped in molten chocolate, an extravagant pistachio and passion fruit cronut (a cross between a croissant and a doughnut), or a double doughnut with raspberry violet jam. The doughnut favours are pleasingly imaginative – the crema catalana and white chocolate is a particular favourite. Don’t forget to stock up on Chök’s wonderful handmade chocolate trufes before leaving. globalblue.com

ON LAND On Land is one of the city’s leading multi-brand stores, having catered to Barcelona’s most discerning shoppers for more than 20 years. With a strong focus on smaller, independent labels, owners Elena Castaudi and Michele Gilli champion contemporary design. The store’s intriguing range of cutting-edge brands includes forward-looking Spanish tailor Josep Abril, minimalist German label Rundholz, Danish accessories maker Becksöndergaard and nautical-inspired French name Armor-Lux, as well as the inhouse brand Gorni Kramer, which ofers a modern take on the laidback aesthetic that has come to defne the city’s style. 40: And The Bride Wore ...
