BORN AGAIN Barcelona-based Demano makes distinctive accessories using surplus materials. Its story began in 1999, when its founders came upon a newly discarded advertising banner, and realised it could be put to new use. The following year, the eco-friendly label signed an agreement with the city council giving it an exclusive supply of unwanted posters from cultural events, such as the Grec festival or La Mercè. Not only does this prevent them from going to landfll, it also gives the label’s products a truly one-of-akind heritage. THE BIG IDEA Spanish brands ofer everything you need to embrace the season’s trend for bold jewellery, says Hannah Lewis

40 | F E AT U R E S

So says Harper’s Bazaar, and perhaps it’s this feeling that is fuelling the fashion for over-the-top jewellery right now. If jewellery lifts the mood, then more jewellery, and bigger jewellery, can only be a good thing. And whether you’re layering on multiple strands of precious metals or embracing statement costume pieces, Spain’s leading high jewellery brands prove that their decades of expertise can lead to the creation of some of the most trend-led designs anywhere. Layering was a key trend on the catwalks, from strand after strand of dainty chains to stacks of bracelets and fingers dripping with rings. Barcelona jeweller Rabat offers many striking options for achieving this look. Graceful gold creations, adorned with brown and white diamonds, are dainty enough to be worn in layers, while the luxurious materials are chosen to complement each piece’s distinctive qualities.

‘A

woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls,’ as Coco Chanel once declared. She may have said it many decades ago, but if this season’s catwalks are anything to go by, designers are still following the maxim today. Jewellery was big news for spring/summer 2016, with designers across the globe giving new focus to accessories. From Alexander Wang to Dolce & Gabbana, the message was clear: when it comes to jewellery, more is more. ‘There is nothing that brings a smile to our face like a pretty ring, a jangly necklace, or some sparkly earrings … Jewellery lifts the spirits.’ Previous page (from left): Masreira spring/ summer 2016; Tous Dreams necklace Above (both): Rabat gold and diamond jewellery

Another Barcelona name, Tous, also has beautiful minimalist pieces. Its Ethereal Gold & Diamonds collection has fine bangles just asking to be stacked, with a corresponding gold, diamond and clear acrylic ring that demands more than a second look. For a more playful aesthetic, try the brand’s Caramelet collection, whose delicate rings, bracelets and necklaces feature tiny sweets. Not that this trend is all about the dainty. When it comes to layering rings, slim ones are the obvious choice, but bold cocktail rings piled across each hand make for a truly fashion-forward look. Bagués and Masriera, sister companies who take an artistic approach to jewellery design, offer beautiful examples. At Bagués, rounded shapes and bold colours reign supreme, while at Masriera, diamonds and precious

gems adorn flora-inspired creations in yellow gold. Then there are the pieces that are so striking in themselves that they need no accompaniment. At Bagués, bold is the signature aesthetic, and its iconic Barcelona range offers trophy piece after trophy piece. Inspired by the spirit, the people and the architecture of the city (with more than a little inspiration from Antoni Gaudí), the range’s central motif is a colourful enamel orb caged in swirls of gold. Whether it’s a multi-strand chain dotted with these distinctive orbs or a bold string formed entirely from them, a necklace like this is all you need to take your outfit to the next level. Tous is also embracing colour this season, offering pieces sure to delight the fashion set. In the Face collection, pearls and gemstones form eyes on curious but cute

The message this season is clear: when it comes to jewellery, more is definitely more the gold and pearl Happy Moments set has our vote. If asymmetry just isn’t for you, embrace the other major trend in earrings: oversized and glittering. Here bigger really is better, with shoulder-grazing the ultimate aim, and luxurious materials are an absolute must. Rabat’s 925 collection offers amazing jewelled creations that provide a pop of colour, while its Ethnic range comprises more unusual travel-inspired pieces, such as oversized discs edged in gold. Or why not love the city you’re in and don a pair of Bagués’s rounded Barcelona earrings, their golden swirls enhanced with a smatter of diamonds? After all, as Elizabeth Taylor once said, ‘Diamonds won’t keep you warm at night, but they’re sure fun when the sun shines.’

fantasy creatures. These same eyes can be found floating alongside the brand’s signature bear symbol on pop-art inspired studs. Those who want to go all out should enjoy the Dreams necklace, a celebration of nature, colour and imagination. Last but not least, we come to the ears, which were adorned with all manner of delights on the spring/ summer catwalks. One key trend to note, which has been bubbling for a while, is the asymmetric look. This season’s earrings are stylistically strong enough to not need a twin for support, so why not mix and match? Rabat’s Pearls collection offers various models which, based as they are around white gold, pearls and diamonds, can all be paired quite happily. Or let someone else do the hard work, and pick up the already asymmetrical sets by Tous. Available in a number of varieties,

In the hotel’s Seta restaurant, chef Antonio Guida creates a favourful Mediterranean menu infuenced by his southern Italian background; select a bottle to accompany your meal from the 500-label-strong selection. The Pénélope bag, new to luxury leather brand Longchamp for spring/ summer 2016, is a clever fusion of previous styles and techniques. This sporty offering, with its discreet exterior logo and timeless zip tassels, is available in four colourways – sumptuous terracotta, subtle beige, rich blue (pictured) and black – and also in indigo calfskin with contrasting black cowhide piping and handles, as the Pénélope Fantaisie. French brand Longchamp has a history of sporting style: it takes its name from a famous horse racing track. Longchamp, Passeig de Gràcia 86, 08008 Barcelona, +34 93 272 3907, longchamp.com

ちっぽけなお菓子を globalblue.com

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME – WITH RIMOWA

The 1920s marked the beginning of modern air travel and the golden age of Hollywood. In 1919, Hugo Junkers presented the world’s first all-metal commercial aircraft. It was made using the aircraft aluminum alloy discovered by Alfred Wilm in 1906. In 1950, RIMOWA presented its suitcase with the unmistakable grooved design made of the same material – at the time, it was the lightest suitcase in the world. RIMOWA was a real pioneer in the sector, starting the trend for lightweight luggage back then. RIMOWA STORE BARCELONA: CALLE PROVENÇA, 257 www.rimowa.com
