This backdrop sets the scene today for a modern city that retains all its medieval charm, its narrow winding lanes and cobbled streets leading the way to a playground for lovers of design, fashion and food. Jewellery brand Wouters & Hendrix, a stalwart of the city’s creative scene, was established in 1984 by Katrin Wouters and Karen Hendrix. The duo have spent 30 years cultivating a design DNA that has evolved from base metals to gold and sterling silver. Pieces are executed in an abstract, eclectic fashion and include collaborations with the likes of Dries Van Noten, Paul Smith and Burberry. ‘Our goal is to fill the gap between classic jewellery and the cheap supermarketkitsch kind,’ they say. ‘We aim

hey say the best trends take a while to catch on and that’s certainly true of Antwerp, one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. Unlike so many design and cultural hotspots, Belgium’s second-largest city remains refreshingly under the radar, largely unaffected by the chatter of online commentary that can often disrupt the spontaneity and excitement of visiting somewhere for the very first time. It hasn’t always been this way, however. During the 16th century, Antwerp was one of Europe’s most prominent cities. It was home to artist Peter Paul Rubens, a hub for both the architects and consumers of art, design and culture, and one of the centres of the world’s diamond industry, which formed the backbone of the

Antwerp’s leading shopping streets combine local boutiques with global favourites to occupy the niche between innovative jewellery design and goldsmithery.’ The brand embodies the notion that creativity has an indefinable appeal – an approach which feels authentic to Antwerp. Also flying the flag for accessories in Antwerp is Coccodrillo, a boutique whose brand portfolio reads like a who’s who of shoe design. The store features designers such as Ann Demeulemeester, AF Vandevorst, Church’s, Prada and Tabitha
Simmons. Its muted, refined and neutral interior contrasts beautifully with customers’ excitement at finding so many cutting-edge designers under one roof. Those looking for further style inspiration should head to the area surrounding Lombardenvest, one of Antwerp’s leading shopping streets, which is dotted with little boutiques. International favourites APC and Scotch & Soda are interspersed with independent Belgian brands such as Ganterie Boon, a leather specialist shop established in 1884 that still retains its 19th-century frontage. Nearby, Step by Step stocks leading contemporary fashion including Alexander Wang, Vanessa Bruno and Isabel Marant. Antwerp may have become synonymous with innovation but it’s no stranger to vintage

The top of the Museum aan de Stroom gives a birds-eye city view style. Viar is a spacious interiors emporium that stocks an impressive selection of goods, from furniture and clothing to cars and artwork, across a range of different eras. It is centrally located on Kloosterstraat, where you could easily while away an afternoon perusing the host of antique and vintage stores. Antwerp native Regula Ysewijn
is a writer, photographer and fan of the city’s retro boutiques. ‘The numbers are declining but those that remain like to offer a unique style: a mix between designer vintage and no-name brands. Turn a corner and you’ll find a street entirely devoted to vintage Chanel and Dior!’ she explains. Antwerp’s renowned chocolate shops are a pleasure to behold – and sample – but there is a lot more to the city’s cuisine than cocoa. Food enthusiasts should start at Goossens, one of the oldest bakeries in the city, where the aroma of freshly baked bread fills a space only large enough to accommodate three or four customers at a time. Goossens, head to Caffènation on Mechelsesteenweg, a speciality coffee roaster where you can work, swot up on single-origin beans or simply take in the relaxed caféculture vibe. For Ysewijn, Antwerp’s ethnic quarter, close to the station, offers the most excitement. ‘You can enjoy a Lebanese flatbread and explore the many Moroccan shops selling brightly coloured dresses and headscarves. Or visit the Chinese district – the place to find a bowl of hand-pulled noodles and the kind of vegetables and fruits you won’t see anywhere else.’ As the daylight begins to fade, climb to the top of the striking nine-storey Museum aan de

‘It’s all about your olfactory memory,’ says Anne-Pascale Mathy-Devalck. ‘Everyone is looking for their inner self and a fragrance that reminds them of something from their childhood, the smell of a garden, the feeling of having the smell of someone they loved on their skin.’ It was this highly personal relationship between people and scent that inspired Mathy-Devalck to open her Brussels boutique, L’Antichambre, specialising in bespoke fragrances. Mathy-Devalck has always been passionate about perfume. She was working as a graphic designer and photographer when, in 2005, one of her close friends found a historic book of perfumes among her mother’s belongings. The book, dating back to 1905, was flled with forgotten formulas
that immediately piqued MathyDevalck’s interest. Initially, the perfumer planned to resurrect these lost fragrances but she soon realised that her real passion was imagining and creating her own original scents. She then spent four years learning her craft before fnally opening L’Antichambre in 2009. Each scent sold in the store is crafted from the highest-quality raw materials and is manufactured in Grasse, the historic region at the centre of the French perfume industry. ‘We manufacture our perfumes in Grasse because it’s the most renowned place in the world to fnd the highest-quality raw materials for perfumes,’ Mathy-Devalck explains. ‘It’s the world capital of perfume and has a long history of perfume creation – it’s also one of the best places to fnd professional noses.’ While L’Antichambre’s perfumes are manufactured in France, each is imagined and conceived in Brussels. example, musky notes, heliotrope notes … and a million more!’ Although the boutique is known for its bespoke service, L’Antichambre also ofers a highly sought-after range of ‘ready-towear’ perfumes for both men and women, as well as a selection of home fragrances, including room sprays, difusers and scented candles. Each ready-mixed scent is based on the highest-quality ingredients available and crafted with the same amount of care as the bespoke fragrances. ‘Our home-made fragrances are based on stories, meetings we have had with people who came into the shop, a moment, a feeling,’ says Mathy-Devalck. Every perfume, whether a house fragrance or a unique bespoke creation, is the result of careful thought and consideration, and this attention to detail is

personalised. The client is frst led through each of the base ingredients, sampling them and discussing his or her emotional reaction to each scent with MathyDevalck. After a preference is determined, the perfumer then crafts a series of samples in test tubes, adding and removing diferent ingredients depending on the client’s tastes, until the fnal blend is determined. Every bespoke perfume is unique and its exact ingredients are kept a closely guarded secret. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Mathy-Devalck’s own tastes are extremely varied. ‘When I frst started working I liked the woody and spicy notes,’ she explains. ‘After working and discovering all these new raw materials and fragrances, my senses and tastes have become broader and broader. refected in both the fragrance bottles and the boutique itself. Each scent is presented in a bottle designed to echo the spirit of the house and each features a personalised label. ‘We wanted to have something simple to keep the focus on the fragrance rather than the packaging; our main concern is the quality of the product and not the marketing of the bottle,’ explains Mathy-Devalck. ‘It had to be a bottle that shows the luxury of yesterday and the modernity of today but in a very simple way. It was also important for us to have all of our packaging produced in Europe.’ L’Antichambre’s interior has been similarly well thought out. Architect Olivier Hannaert and designer Michel Penneman have created an intimate store, perfectly suited to the personalised nature of its ofering. ‘It is a classy and
confdential place,’ says MathyDevalck. ‘Customers have to feel confdent to make their own creations – coming into L’Antichambre is like entering another world.’ It is this perfectionism combined with personalisation that has proved a winning formula for Mathy-Devalck and L’Antichambre. Imaginatively conceived in Brussels and impeccably executed in Grasse, L’Antichambre’s perfumes now enjoy international acclaim and, perhaps most importantly, MathyDevalck is free to do what she loves every day. So what’s next for the perfumer? ‘International development is the next step; we would love to conquer the biggest capitals of the world. SWEET THING Belgian expertise with chocolate has made the country’s pralines, ganaches and caramels into international favourites. Isabella Redmond Styles profles some masters of the chocolatier’s art
Belgium has long been known for its superb chocolate. One of the frst records of chocolate trading in the region is from 17th-century Ghent – a purchase made by a local abbot. As in many parts of Europe, chocolate frst became popular as a hot drink enjoyed by the social elite. Belgian chocolatiers, many of whom are now known worldwide, particularly thrived from the early 20th century onwards, when large quantities of cocoa were imported into the country from Africa – and are responsible for some clever innovations. globalblue.com
The praline, an irresistible combination of a chocolate shell with a soft flling, is a Belgian invention and an international favourite. Belgium also claims the invention of chocolate spread, as well as the ballotin, the distinctive deep cardboard box, sometimes tied with a ribbon, in which pralines and other chocolates are frequently packaged. Rightly proud of its chocolate making tradition, the country carefully regulates chocolate production to ensure standards are kept high and traditional techniques are maintained.

DUMON A relative newcomer on Belgium’s chocolate scene, Stephan Dumon set up his frst shop after he began producing artisanal trufes for nearby bakeries and patisseries. He now has seven stores, including three in Bruges. Visitors can expect to discover a traditional chocolatier that lends a contemporary spin to traditional Belgian recipes and uses the fnest possible ingredients in all of its creations; no preservatives are added. Specialities include impeccable praline sea shells and cerisettes – whole cherries soaked in kirsch and brandy and then enrobed in layers of dark chocolate. Artisanal chocolatier Mary Delluc began her business in 1919 on the exclusive rue Royale in Brussels, opening both a chocolate shop and a tea room. She soon developed a reputation for exacting standards and inventive recipes, and was awarded a royal warrant for her exquisite creations. Today, the quality of the natural ingredients is still paramount at Mary, evident in the chocolatier’s pralines, caramels, fresh creams and marzipans alike. Mary store interiors are inspired by art deco, and in the boutiques visitors can discover a very special range of chocolates, produced in small batches according to traditional recipes and presented in boxes that make charming keepsakes. The favours on ofer include the Windsor, a dark chocolate ganache infused with Earl Grey tea and the Tonka, a milk chocolate ganache favoured, as the name suggests, with aromatic tonka beans. N EU H AUS Perhaps surprisingly, renowned Belgian chocolatier Neuhaus began as an apothecary. Set up by Jean Neuhaus in the prestigious Galerie de la Reine, Brussels, in 1857, the store was originally known for enveloping the less pleasant tasting medicines it sold in a more appealing chocolate shell. It took 55 years before Jean Neuhaus’s son decided to forgo the medical element completely and, it’s claimed, invented the globalblue.com
frst praline chocolate as a result. Today every Neuhaus praline is still made by hand according to traditional and authentic recipes at the company’s Brussels workshops. DELVAUX Established in 1829, Delvaux is the oldest leather goods house in the world, predating the establishment of modern Belgium by a year. As developments in travel created a surge in the demand for luggage and other leather goods, founder Charles Delvaux recognised a growing market, and his luxurious designs soon proved highly popular.
