NATURAL BEAUTY Antwerp-based jeweller Karolin Van Loon founded her label, Karolin, after a successful career in interior design. Following on from a desire to make women’s living spaces feel special, she decided to make the women themselves feel special with glistening pieces of fine jewellery. BAGS OF POWER Longchamp’s autumn/winter 2018/19 collection was designed with a modern-day version of the mythological women warriors, the Amazons, in mind. The brand’s hero bag of the season is called the Amazone and comes in a wide range of styles. Whether fringed, crafted from velvet or made in faux python calfskin, there’s a version of this bag for all tastes and occasions. The Amazons are commonly associated with horses, a symbol that is also the emblem of the French leather goods house. grc Longchamp, Komedieplaats 10, 2000 Antwerp, +32 (0)3 227 3300, longchamp.be FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 40

Belgium’s leading artisans are proving that traditional craftsmanship is as covetable today as ever, says Hannah Lewis Above: precise attention to detail at Raidillon’s watch workshop

The team will even measure the distance between each stitch handbags. Since then, handbags have been at the heart of Delvaux. From celebrities to royalty, discerning women across Belgium – and across the globe – adore the brand’s creations. Why? Because these are bags that are crafted by some of the most skilled artisans in the world who use only the finest materials available; and they work on designs that stand the test of time. Every Delvaux bag is painstakingly crafted by master artisans to the most exacting Above (from left): Delvaux atelier in Brussels; the brand’s craftsmanship

s one the oldest fine leather luxury goods houses in the world, Delvaux knows a thing or two about craftsmanship. Founded in 1829, the house actually predates Belgium itself, which was established as an independent state the next year. Steeped in history yet constantly innovating, Delvaux is one of a number of Belgian brands proving that exquisite craftsmanship and timeless design are as covetable today as ever. Though it’s hard to believe now, there was a time before handbags. It was during the evolution of railways in the 19th century that handbags became indispensable for women travellers. In the 1880s, founder Charles Delvaux saw the potential in this new accessory and his eponymous firm became one of the first in the world to file patents for

standards. Experts first source the best hides from French and Italian tanneries (house specialities include exotic and rare leathers such as alligator, galuchat, ostrich and python). These are then carefully stored in the Delvaux leather library, from which the artisans will carefully choose the perfect skin for each bag. Each section of the bag – from the smallest to the largest – is then cut and individually worked, expertly manipulated to precise specifications of thickness, softness and so on. From start to finish, no detail is overlooked. The team will even measure the distance between each stitch in the leather. Craftsmanship is, of course, intrinsic to
the appeal of Delvaux. But world-class design is just as important. As well as classic styles, the house releases seasonal collections that comprise a mix of updated favourites and brand new models.
Le Brillant is the brand’s signature style; a timeless shape with a sculptural feel that remains as covetable today as when it launched in 1958. It has been reimagined countless times over the decades, and this season you’ll find a monochrome version with an almost trompe l’oeil design that explores light and shadow, and an all-black design with a detachable concertina strap in black and white leather. These are handbags that feel modern and fresh yet they are also pieces that you will reach for time and again ‒ great design doesn’t age. Delvaux is not the only brand championing world-class craftsmanship. Belgian watchmaker Raidillon was founded in 2001 and is committed to combining the latest Above (from top): Le Brillant, Delvaux’s signature bag; Raidillon 41-CIC-300 watch from the Curve collection

technologies with the kind of exquisite artisanal methods that have been passed down through generations. The brand is inspired by the world of luxury cars and motor racing, and its customer is the gentleman driver ‒ a discerning man who loves automobiles and understands the meaning of luxury. Raidillon takes its name from the most famous curve of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps racing circuit, home to the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix, and many of its designs allude to the motor racing world with sporty touches such as bold stripes. Its Timeless collection is so called because the designs are classic enough to suit any man and almost any occasion. Behind each of the brand’s designs is a solid foundation of great craftsmanship. Straps are
handmade in Belgium and, though Belgian in design, every watch is equipped with a Swiss movement; the prestigious Valjoux 7750 movement to be exact. Only the best will do for Raidillon’s timepieces. This season, look out for the brand’s latest watch, the Curve. This striking timepiece features an asymmetric case of stainless steel with sapphire glass atop the dial. Innovative in shape, it retains two key Raidillon design signatures; its case back is transparent, revealing a steering wheel-like movement, and its leather strap features large holes and visible stitching. As with every Raidillon watch, only 55 of this model will be made, guaranteeing exclusivity. The brand also offers a range of luxury accessories to complement its watches; again, these

are aimed at the discerning motor enthusiast. The City briefcase and Weekend bag are particular highlights of the new collection. When it comes to expertly crafted clothing, gentlemen should look no further than Degand. Established in Brussels in 1983, the maison reflects founder Pierre Degand’s passion for true luxury in fashion. He began by bringing together some of the finest makers in the world, and made a commitment to offer only the most exquisitely produced garments and accessories. To this day, Degand provides ready-to-wear – as well as semi-bespoke pieces – by some of the world’s most prestigious and exacting specialists. Come here for a suit by Brioni or a shirt by Kiton
– a Naples-based tailor known as one of the best in the world. It’s not just the craftsmanship of others that Degand offers. Belgium’s most discerning gentlemen – including royalty – come to the maison for completely bespoke pieces. On hand are tailors and makers of shoe lasts (wooden moulds from which bespoke shoes are created), ensuring Degand can provide a head-to-toe, made-tomeasure formal wardrobe. For more casual occasions, the maison offers the brand’s relaxed yet chic ready-to-wear selection, from simple polo shirts to luxurious suits. The approval of the Degand family is only given to pieces of the highest quality made to exacting standards. Why settle for anything less?

24: EXQUISITE EXPERTISE

Valjoux globalblue.cn

24: EXQUISITE EXPERTISE
Прозрачная задняя часть корпуса globalblue.ru | globalblue.com
