Coming Up Roses
As one of the famous Antwerp Six designers to come out of the city’s prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Dries Van Noten has been shaping the Belgian fashion scene since the 1980s. The brand’s autumn/winter 2019/20 collection was inspired by the Gertrude Stein poem Sacred Emily, which includes the line ‘Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose’. The flower features throughout the collection, from clothing to accessories, and holds special significance to the Save up to 16% by shopping tax free, see page 49
designer himself. Photographs of more than 50 varieties of rose were taken in Van Noten’s garden and these created the distinctive prints, including those on the pictured leather boots which are certain to become a treasured part of any wardrobe for years to come. lt Dries Van Noten boots, €689, Dries Van Noten, Nationalestraat 16, 2000 Antwerp, +32 (0)3 470 2510, driesvannoten.be FOR MAP GO TO PAGE 42

Antwerp has been the centre of the world’s diamond trade for centuries, offering exquisite jewellery and unrivalled expertise. Emma Cheevers discovers the best places in the city to find dazzling pieces
D
iamonds, the hardest natural substance on earth, take their name from the Greek word adamas meaning unbreakable. Their toughness belies the astonishing beauty of a cut and polished stone; for centuries diamonds have been highly sought after, often passed down as jewellery through the generations. The collecting of diamonds is thought to have started in India around 400BC. The stones began to appear in European jewellery in the 13th century and by the 15th century the diamond industry was flourishing in Flanders – now, of course, part of Belgium. Belgian diamond cutters have long been renowned. Their great success began in 15th-century Antwerp when Lodewyk van Bercken invented the scaif, a polishing wheel that used a mixture of olive oil and diamond dust to achieve perfect symmetry across all the cuts of a stone. The scaif revolutionised how diamonds were processed, boosting production and dramatically increasing the popularity of the stones across the 50 57

world. It is largely thanks to the scaif that the Belgian diamond trade became the multi-million euro industry of today. Lodewyk van Bercken soon achieved much acclaim; Charles the Bold, the wealthy Duke of Burgundy, even commissioned him to process the now lost Florentine Diamond, an enormous 137-carat stone. Today, you can see a bronze statue of Lodewyk van Bercken on Meir street in Antwerp’s main shopping district. The city remains the nucleus of the global diamond trade, with about 80% of the world’s rough diamonds passing through it each year. More than 32,000 craftsman, cutters, graders, bankers and dealers work in the city’s diamond district – an area of one square mile in the centre. Antwerpsche Diamantkring, the main rough diamond trading hall, is situated close to the historic Antwerpen-Centraal railway station. It holds a biannual Rough Diamond Day fair when thousands of sellers and buyers gather to meet and trade. While the majority of Antwerp’s diamond trade is wholesale, there is still ample Previous page: central Antwerp

opportunity for individuals to enjoy the extensive variety and value for money that shopping for diamonds in Belgium can offer. With more than 380 workshops in the city, it can be difficult to decide where to start. We suggest beginning with Diva, a diamond museum that opened in 2018. Here you will be schooled in the famous four Cs – cut, carat, clarity and colour. You’ll also learn about Belgium’s fascinating diamond history. There are more than 600 items on display, including spectacular jewellery such as 19th-century diamond diadems and priceless tiaras. Next, take a walk around the diamond district to familiarise yourself with the area. Then head to Diamondland, which offers complimentary guided tours of its workshop in 16 languages and gives visitors insight into the diamond cutting and setting process. It is also known for its wide selection of stones. Manager Frances Mesman says that the workshop’s goldsmiths and diamond setters ‘can create your jewel within 30 minutes, in front of you’ – here, you’ll be sure that the stone you have chosen is set just as you want it. Diamondland is one of a select group of just 24 jewellers to have been awarded Antwerp Most Brilliant certification, meaning it meets more than 30 stringent quality requirements. Colman is another member of this exclusive coterie. Here you’ll find a large selection of fine jewellery and watches, including its
own brand, JBS, which can create same-day customised pieces. Should you be in the market for the most special of purchases, Orsini specialises in engagement rings. The 30-year-old establishment can assist with all aspects of your desired design, from choosing the diamond to creating a bespoke ring. A key point to remember is that all stones or jewellery purchased should come with certification from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), the IGI (International Gemological Institute) or the HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant, Antwerp’s diamond high council). The cost of most jewellery should also cover after-sale service, including resizing. Non-EU residents can also enjoy significant savings by claiming Tax Free Shopping refunds. Importantly, most diamonds from the city are documented as conflict-free under the Kimberley Process certification scheme. Whether you’re on the hunt for an engagement ring or marking an occasion with exquisite diamond jewellery, the value, selection and extensive expertise in Antwerp are unrivalled. With many jewellers able to create bespoke pieces in a matter of hours, rather than expecting customers to wait weeks, Antwerp offers truly excellent service. With its fine architecture, vibrant fashion and absorbing history it is the perfect place to look for a dazzling piece of jewellery that will become a treasured heirloom

MUSÉE DELVAUX Delvaux is one of the oldest luxury leather goods brands in the world, so it’s fitting that a museum be dedicated to its legacy. Set in the label’s workshop in Brussels, the museum will feature the Mur des Collabs, a wall paying tribute to the designers with whom the brand has collaborated. It will also showcase the Humeurs du Brillant collection of Delvaux’s signature bags. Entry is by appointment, so be sure to enquire in advance. sm Musée Delvaux, 7 boulevard Louis Schmidtlaan, 1040 Brussels, delvaux.com

THE JANE Take it to church at Antwerp’s premiere gourmet destination, The Jane. Boasting two Michelin stars, this stunning restaurant is located in the former chapel of a military hospital and features a striking stained-glass window and a 10-course tasting menu that’s as captivating as the surroundings. Opened in 2014 and with an interior curated by acclaimed Dutch designer Piet Boon, The Jane has become a culinary landmark in the city. Head chef Nick Bril is constantly innovating to create a memorable, enticing menu and every table in the restaurant offers a view into the bustling open kitchen. Book ahead for a special occasion. sm The Jane, Paradeplein 1, 2018 Antwerp, +32 (0)3 808 4465, thejaneantwerp.com globalblue.com

LONGCHAMP
The monogram has skyrocketed back into popularity recently and one of the most accessible interpretations of the trend comes from Longchamp. Called Longchamp LGP, this fun and frivolous design is eye-catching and energetic; it comes in two colourways and a host of designs. sm Longchamp, Komedieplaats 10, 2000 Antwerp, +32 (0)3 227 3300, longchamp.com

需要注意的一点是所有购买的钻石 和珠宝都应当拥有GIA(美国宝石研究 院)、IGI(国际宝石学院)或者HRD( 安特卫普的钻石高级理事会)出具的鉴定
