NEW CLASSIC Berlin-based design studio Nitz & Schieck uses 3D printing to create jewellery such as this striking geometric ring, which is 3D printed in wax before being cast. The ring, part of the Solitaire collection, embodies strength and elegance. It is reminiscent of a classic ring that might hold a precious solitaire stone – but with the ‘gem’ represented by the shape of facets cast in steel or silver. Nicole Nitz and Sandro Schieck, the designers behind the brand, Save up to 14.5% by shopping tax free, see page 90

FULL CIRCLE When André Goerner founded Gentlemen’s Circle, he aimed to create a one-stop shop for everything a man could possibly want, from an old-fashioned shave or a Swiss watch to a tailor-made suit or a quality cigar. The store is styled like a high-end barbershop from the 1920s; solid armchairs and parquet flooring add to the luxurious ambience, while earth tones and softly illuminated onyx counters lend classical masculinity. Michelin-starred chef Kolja Kleeberg has created an exclusive pastry named Gentlemen’s Corner for the store: bite-sized pieces of spiced sourdough rolled in sugar and served hot. Our top tip – enjoy this snack along with a signature gin rickey cocktail from the bar. th Gentlemen’s Circle, Charlottenstrasse 35, 10117 Berlin, +49 (0)30 2007 5470, gentlemens-circle.com

WRANGLE IT Denim brand Wrangler recently opened a store on Alte Schönhauserstrasse in the centre of Berlin, part of an ongoing expansion of its retail network across Germany. The space, which covers 120 square metres, is bright, modern and, of course, minimal: a home that befits Wrangler’s forward-thinking biannual collections for men and women. One of the newest additions to the store is a collection of denim products that city-dwellers can take to the countryside – these classic garments transcend style. rd Wrangler, Alte Schönhauserstrasse 32A, 10119 Berlin, +49 (0)30 2008 9520, wrangler.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 88

Following launches in Munich, Hamburg and Sylt, American brand Woolrich has opened a store in Berlin. The 270-square-metre space was designed by prestigious Japanese studio Wonderwall, under the direction of Masamichi Katayama. Katayama reflects Woolrich’s connection to the outdoors by including floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the two-storey building. Furnishings combine the heritage and the contemporary – prints, pictures and modern materials and finishes emphasise the brand’s heritage, while showing how it has remained current since it was founded in 1830. rd Woolrich, Fasanenstrasse 74, 10719 Berlin, +49 (0)30 8870 9986, woolrich.eu FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 79

IN STORE: KONK German fashion designers are becoming increasingly prominent on the international stage and the mission of the Konk concept store, located in Berlin’s fashionable Mitte neighbourhood, is to promote the next generation of German talent. Edda Mann, Konk’s owner, is adept at fnding the best of German fashion and design. She talks about her store and its philosophy to SHOP’s fashion editor Ximena Daneri and fashion co-ordinator Fani Mari
‘Berlin is such a creative city, with a very impressive history. I was born in the east of Berlin; it’s my home town. I have a strong need to support creative people living in this wonderful city: this is what I’m doing, and this is what inspires me. The store opened in 2003 and the team is made up of myself and three other wonderful women. ‘I chose this area because many galleries and art spaces are located here. The idea of art manifested in clothes is very important to us at Konk. Also, I like the smaller stores in this neighbourhood. I took Konk over in 2012 and I already loved the design of the store – especially the changing room, which has drawings of trees on the wall by an old student companion of mine, Alexander Wagner. ‘I try to support young and promising Berlin-based designers as well as longtime designers. Every piece is selected carefully and as a result Konk has become a happy, colourful place with many unique pieces that you won’t find anywhere else. ‘When we’re selecting designers, the most important thing is that the designer lives and designs in Berlin and the production is within Europe. Perhaps I would say Naoko Ogawa and NCA, but there are many, many more. For spring/summer 2016 I am excited about Anntian, Marina Hoermanseder and Penelope’s Sphere. And my favourite trend? erlin boasts many exciting and intriguing neighbourhoods, from elegant Charlottenburg, with its leafy Schlosspark gardens and the upmarket boutiques of Kurfürstendamm, to the Kreuzberg district, with its abundance of open-all-hours bars and nightclubs. One of the most up-and-coming areas is Prenzlauer Berg, a former bohemian quarter which is now filled with quirky boutiques, busy markets, independent eateries and watering holes galore. Begin your Prenzlauer Berg adventure by exploring the area’s shopping options. First, seek out an unusual bag at Tausche. The walls of Tausche’s Prenzlauer Berg store are lined with the various options available, showcasing patterned and illustrated panels, some featuring popular Berlin landmarks, as well as textured versions. ‘We opened our shop more than 11 years ago,’ explains Heiko Braun, Tausche’s co-founder. ‘Back then, it was a very vivid area. A bohemian lifestyle could be found and there were a lot of hipsters. We were among the first to have a fashion store in Helmholtzplatz. The

area has changed a lot. Many families now live here, some hipsters have stayed and there are tourists from all over the world. The area is full of historic flair and you can still sense the past, even though everything is very renovated now.’ Kastanienallee shopping street is the next port of call, for the Flagshipstore fashion emporium and the Above and Dost streetwear boutiques. Flagshipstore offers Berlin-made eco-friendly fashion and clothing from European designers who are less known than they deserve to be. Johanna van den Haak decided to open a boutique here because she spotted a gap in the market. ‘It’s a nice and hip area, but there was one thing missing – a store like ours, which offers real Berlin fashion design and handmade, special accessories for men and women. Especially during summer, we have many customers from overseas. They like the individual things we offer which they won’t find anywhere else.’ Concept stores Above and Dost, opened by long-term friends Mike Gülal and Michael Müller, better known as Mike and Micha,

When Mike and Micha were looking for somewhere to start their retail journey, Prenzlauer Berg was the obvious choice. ‘We always knew about its potential to become a great shopping destination,’ they explain. ‘Prenzlauer Berg is the gentrified, arty neighbourhood that everyone loves to hate because it is so nice. It’s full of bohemian couples, hipsters, cafés, organic food stores and yoga studios. In summer this area is the best. It’s all happening outside.’ To enjoy some of the best outdoor activities in the district, look no further than the weekend markets. On Saturday morning, visit the Kollwitzplatz area to soak up its relaxed atmosphere and enjoy the delicious food at the weekly farmers’ market. Talented designers from around the world are setting up in Berlin, attracted by the city’s vibrant creative scene. Hannah Lewis speaks to some of the names to watch
‘Berlin is a city that makes you feel free,’ says Odély Teboul. A French native, Teboul is one half of the talented design duo behind the Augustin Teboul label, and part of a wave of designers and labels moving to Berlin, drawn by the city’s unique creative character. Though Teboul’s design partner Annelie Augustin is German, it was not her nationality that brought the pair to Berlin; rather, it was a feeling that the city was the place where they 93 / 104

should launch their label. ‘There’s a great creative scene, it’s great to be surrounded by so many creative minds,’ Teboul explains. ‘The style is very individual, people dare to mix and have a personal touch.’ The city has indeed proved welcoming to the designers, who have won prizes for their creations and now show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. ‘Strong’, ‘feminine’, ‘sophisticated’ and ‘detailed’ are the terms Teboul uses to Lef: Steinrohner spring/summer 2016

Berlin is a melting pot of eclectic cultures and ideas that fosters some of the most exciting fashion design talent in the world describe the Augustin Teboul brand, and all are reflected in its all-black collections, which embrace strong silhouettes. The latest Augustin Teboul collection evokes a tropical storm and juxtaposes geometric lines with the softer theme of plants. The black and white colour scheme is particularly powerful on a polka-dot shirt dress with an asymmetric hem of cascading ruffles. Augustin Teboul’s bold, unique womenswear falls somewhere between ready-to-wear and bespoke, and the Berlin scene has proved the perfect place for the two
designers to explore their idiosyncratic ideas. Inna Stein and Caroline Rohner, another creative duo, met at the Weissensee school of art in Berlin. On graduating, the pair, who are Russian and Swiss respectively, chose to remain in the city and found the Steinrohner label, which won the 2015 Fashion Council Germany Young Designers’ Award. ‘The city is multicultural and very inspiring,’ they explain. ‘A lot of artists and musicians move to Berlin, turning it into a continuously growing cultural capital with a very vibrant creative scene.’

The two describe Berlin fashion as minimalistic and architectural, with classic influences, and the same could be said of their own creations. The design of their womenswear seems simple and yet there is always something experimental. ‘We like to shape fabrics into seemingly impossible cuts where you might have to look twice to understand how it’s done.’ The spring/summer Steinrohner collection, Relieve the Reef, dips into the underwater world for inspiration, playing with ‘curiosities of colour under the surface’ and loosely

like there were already in New York, London or Paris. People moved here because of this freedom.’ Karaleev’s eponymous label was launched during these years and the flexible, open environment worked well for his fledgling business, which swiftly gained both recognition and commercial success. His aesthetic is, as he puts it, ‘contemporary unconventional’. Like Steinrohner and Augustin Teboul, Karaleev strikes the perfect balance between the esoteric and the commercial. For spring/summer, soft colours and soft tailoring are given an edge with frayed fabric, interesting textures or pops of bold orange and cobalt. A little black dress is

embracing a coral motif throughout. As in Stein and Rohner’s other collections, prints, shapes and textures are experimental, but the overall effect is genuinely wearable. The ideas are bold and new, but an underlying classical element means the clothes will fit easily into most wardrobes. Vladimir Karaleev came to Berlin 15 years ago to study, moving from his hometown of Sofia in Bulgaria. Now an established name, he has seen the city grow and watched the evolution of its creative scene from uncertain to exciting. ‘Back then, Berlin was looking for its own identity. It was unexplored,’ he recalls. ‘There weren’t rules for fashion, art or music

taken to the next level with unexpected twists and drapes, becoming almost architectural yet somehow still remaining soft. This is an accomplished collection from a seasoned designer who has taken full advantage of the opportunities available in Berlin. Common to all these designers is the idea of their adopted city as a constant influence on their work. For Karaleev, this is paramount.
‘The place I live influences my work most of all,’ he says. ‘My job is my life.’ After 15 years in the city, the Berlin he sees now is a melting pot that combines the cultures and ideas of everyone who has moved there. This eclectic mix is what drew him and others like him to Berlin – and continues to draw others today, fostering some of the most exciting fashion design in the world
MAKING THE CUT Wempe is celebrating the launch of its signature diamond cut. Ruairidh Pritchard explores the German brand’s sparkling new addition

hen it comes to classic European timepieces, few brands can match the reputation, variety or quality of Wempe. The Hamburg-based family company, which offers its own standout designs as well as a multitude of watches from top international brands, has become an authority on all things horological. In recent years, however, Wempe’s jewellery line has also been turning heads, and with good reason. The By Kim jewellery range has opened a new chapter in the company’s 135-year history. It is named after the brand’s charismatic chief executive officer, Kim-Eva Wempe, greatgranddaughter of founder Gerhard Wempe, and the latest collection marks a landmark achievement for the brand, as it launches its very own signature diamond cut. ‘For us as a company, the Wempe-Cut® is a milestone in the development of the jewellery brand,’ explains Anja Heiden, who sits on the Wempe board of directors. ‘The diamond is the most important gemstone for us and with our own cut, we have not only proved our innovative strength and creativity in this field, but have also succeeded in creating
From the exquisite Wempe-Cut® diamonds to the jewellery in which they are set, every piece by Wempe is considered down to the last detail extraordinary added value for our customers.’ The development of the cut itself focused almost entirely on how best to exhibit the quality of the diamonds. All the diamonds are graded with the colour ‘rare white’ or ‘rare white +’ and are classified as either VVS or VS, two of the highest degrees of clarity. During the design process, the diamond 96 / 102

specialists at Wempe worked with the company’s master diamond cutters to develop a variety of potential cuts. As Heiden explains, ‘It absolutely had to be a round cut – and it had to considerably increase the diamond’s brilliance and light reflection. Three prototypes were manufactured, based on our requirements. One fulfilled all of them and, moreover, it looked
beautiful. That was the one to become the Wempe-Cut®.’ After each new Wempe-Cut® diamond is crafted, every individual stone is certified by Hoge Raad voor Diamant, the world-renowned certification authority and gemmology institute in Antwerp. During this process, some of the world’s leading diamond experts inspect each stone to determine its cut, colour, clarity and carat – the hallowed four Cs on which the diamond industry is built. All the rough stones are certified by the United Nations Kimberley Process, an international scheme that ensures diamonds are appropriately sourced. The new cut, which appears for the first time in By Kim’s latest jewellery collection Splendora, features a total of 137 facets – an increase from 57 facets in Wempe’s brilliant-cut gems. The 18-carat white gold setting is elegant and understated, ensuring the main focus of the Splendora line is undoubtedly the Wempe-Cut® diamond. The line comprises three standout pieces: a ring, earrings and a pendant.
Above (clockwise from botom far lef): Wempe Splendora pendant; Kim-Eva Wempe; one of the brand’s Berlin stores; Splendora ring featuring the Wempe-Cut® diamond
Each features Wempe-Cut® diamonds of either one, 1.4 or two carats in a four-prong setting, the interior of which features 16 further brilliant-cut 0.09-carat diamonds. Heiden and the designers at Wempe are set to include the cut across a much wider array of pieces, including bespoke jewellery for some of their most discerning clients. ‘Splendora is the first By Kim line that we will present with the exclusive Wempe-Cut®,’ Heiden explains, ‘but it is certainly not the last. Customers may also have the Wempe-Cut® set in any other setting of their choice.’ This flexibility and open-mindedness, and constant consideration of clients’ wishes, keeps Wempe at the forefront of its field. The brand builds on its long history by constantly pushing forward, enthusiastically pursuing new ideas and new ways to convey its elegant, luxury aesthetic. From the exquisite WempeCut® diamonds to the contemporary yet classic jewellery in which they are set, every piece by Wempe has been considered down to the last detail, and this commitment to true excellence shines through Above (from top): Wempe diamonds awaiting cuting in the brand’s workshop; Splendora earrings; loose-cut diamonds

TABLE TALK Berlin is known for its creativity – not just in fashion and art, but also in food. Fani Mari discovers some of the German capital’s most original places to eat
While traditional German food is hearty and delicious, the country’s dining experience has not always been recognised for its originality or fnesse. This is now changing, particularly in Berlin, where the city’s restaurant scene rivals that of Europe’s more established gastronomic centres. The German capital’s food is rapidly becoming as original and groundbreaking as the art and fashion for which it is already famous. Thanks to Berlin’s cultural diversity, it ofers a wide range of international restaurants that will impress even the most adventurous eaters, served in an impressively wide variety of venues, from high-end Michelin-starred establishments to quirky, colourful street-food cafés. New openings are frequent, and chefs from around the world have found a warm welcome for distinctive styles that range from classic French, Italian and Swiss to Asian, Japanese and Nordic. Whatever you prefer, you’re sure to fnd it in Berlin – and this might also be the trip when you discover some entirely new favourites. globalblue.com

CHUTNIFY This bright, colourful Prenzlauer Berg hotspot is the place to go for ‘modern traditional Indian food’. The house speciality is the dosa, a South Indian style pancake served with a variety of fillings, side dishes and, of course, chutney. The chefs draw on local and organic produce, and recognise the importance of great quality ingredients, which is why they use, for example, free-range chicken and organic eggs. Vegetarians are in for a treat in the form of the Mean Green Paneer Dosa, which is packed with pepper, onions and paneer (Indian cheese) marinated in green chutney, then panseared. Meatier offerings include the Keema Mattar Dosa, a spicy combination of minced lamb, peas and fresh mint. Modekonstrukt, Eberswalder Strasse 16, 10437 Berlin, +49 (0)30 2435 5167, femkit.de
Berlin-based fashion brand Femkit specialises in elegant, classic designs. Founded in 2011 by Cindy Schlobinsky, the company eschews fast-paced trends and focuses instead on high-quality materials and careful attention to customer feedback when new products are developed. In August 2014, Schlobinsky opened the Modekonstrukt store in the Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood. Here clients can discover the collection in a relaxed atmosphere and enjoy an individual consultation. After a little remodelling in 2015, the boutique is once again ready to welcome visitors.

Bucherer has been known for excellence since it opened its first watch and jewellery boutique in Lucerne in 1888, and today it has stores across the globe. The company’s long partnership with Rolex means it offers an unrivalled selection of the brand’s watches, sure to please timepiece aficionados. Bucherer’s own range of fine jewellery is also not to be missed. Look out for the exquisite La Cerise collection, which includes these ultra-feminine earrings. 50: Happening Hood
Свежие globalblue.com

56: Home From Home

62: Making The Cut
