PRETTY AS A PICTURE Veteran designer and illustrator Wolfgang Joop’s Wunderkind label, which he founded in 2003, celebrates the meeting of art and fashion in typically unconventional style. For the brand’s spring/summer 2017 collection, Joop has created an array of fluid, feminine
silhouettes inspired by one of celebrated Spanish artist Diego Velázquez’s series of portraits of the Infanta Margarita Teresa. A strong focus on cut results in architectural pieces that have been purposely deconstructed to celebrate the virtues of craftsmanship. As demonstrated to perfection by this covetable sleeveless dress,

PURE AND SIMPLE The Jil Sander store in Berlin has a new look, based on a design by architecture studio Andrea Tognon. With its structural elements, clean lines and contemporary feel, the store echoes Jil Sander’s ethos and visual identity to perfection. The interior cleverly contrasts natural materials in sculptural shapes,
such as jewel-shaped bronze tables displaying the brand’s accessories, with synthetic materials. One of these is resin, used to make wall panels resembling compacted snow, which serves as an elegant backdrop for the brand’s strikingly modern garments characterised by innovative materials and

BACK TO THE FUTURE For spring/summer 2017, MCM has collaborated with British designer Christopher Raeburn on a unisex capsule collection that brings his sustainable approach to iconic pieces by the German leather goods brand. MCM’s distinctive Visetos canvas forms the basis of the collection, to which Raeburn’s has applied his ‘Remade’ concept, a process of deconstructing items in order to make new ones. The collection encompasses clothing as well as various bags, from belt bags to large totes. MCM – short for Modern Creation München – celebrated its 40th anniversary last year and this collaboration is an opportunity to explore the brand’s origins while looking to its future. grc MCM, Rosenthaler Strasse 38, 10178 Berlin, +49 (0)30 2849 3793, mcmworldwide.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 56
SMALL TALK Since Nicolas Ghesquière introduced the style for autumn/winter 2014/15, the Petite Malle – a riff on Louis Vuitton’s iconic leather trunks – has definitely become an ‘It’ bag. This season sees the brand take the design a step further with the launch of its Petite Malle phone cases. Available for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7+, the cases feature the label’s distinctive Monogram and Monogram Reverse (pictured) canvases finished off with hardware detailing. As the latest must-have technology accessory, these miniature versions of the historic trunk root Louis Vuitton firmly in the 21st century. grc Louis Vuitton, Kurfürstendamm 56-57, 10707 Berlin, +49 (0)30 882 5272, louisvuitton.com FOR M A P GO TO PAGE 46

or decades, Germany’s best designers – of everything from cars to fashion – have found a way to marry technical innovation with sleek good looks, and this is increasingly true in the world of eyewear. Berlin in particular has become an epicentre of cool brands that have won acclaim across the globe for their on-trend designs, forward-thinking manufacture and skilful craftsmanship. ‘German manufacturing is world-famous, 59

to the point where “Made in Germany” is synonymous with top quality and precision craftsmanship,’ explains Justin Hofmann of Berlin-based eyewear brand IC Berlin. Hofmann believes the secret of the city’s success in eyewear is down to the character of the designers who call it home. ‘Berlin has historically been a free and liberal city, and so it follows that it attracts creative thinkers,’ he says. ‘The freedom to be who you want to be, or to recreate yourself,
Believing fosters an amazing creative vibe in Berlin, which leads to some amazing product design.’ IC Berlin is one of the most innovative eyewear brands in Europe, famed for its screwless frame design. As Hofmann explains, ‘the hinge is the heart of every IC Berlin frame.’ The fewer moving parts a frame has, he continues, ‘the less there is to go wrong. No screws means nothing can work loose, fall out, seize or break. Because the temples can pop off Above: Herrlicht glasses
and on so easily and quickly, it means that our glasses have withstood being sat on, trodden on, and even driven over with a car or, in one case, a ride-on lawnmower.’ IC Berlin’s screwless design exemplifies the marriage of technical ingenuity and beautiful design that has put Berlin on the eyewear map, and marrying those two aspects isn’t an easy process. ‘It’s a fine balance,’ says Hofmann, ‘but the IC Berlin aesthetic is a very strong
and precise one. We listen to the demands and needs of our customers while always keeping our design philosophy at the forefront: form follows function.’ Another of Berlin’s leading eyewear brands is Herrlicht, which has become known for its beautifully handcrafted wooden frames. ‘I had, and have, been fascinated by the material and had worked with it for some time before I had the idea of making wooden glasses’, explains designer Andreas Licht. ‘It is a wonderful material to use: it is warm and individual; it can be raw or refined. When I began a decade ago, I did pioneering work. I had the ambition to let it not be just one part of the frames, but the only component. It was a challenging and interesting thing to do.’ For Licht, an experienced joiner,
craftsmanship is at the forefront of everything he does. In the brand’s Berlin workshop, each pair of frames passes through Licht’s hands multiple times during the complex manufacturing process, ensuring that the final result is perfect. ‘I think objects made with real craftsmanship bring a certain beauty with them anyway. But of course making these frames also means seeking the best possible way to bring the technical and the aesthetic side together.’ As to why traditional spectacles are still popular the world over in an age of contact lenses and laser eye surgery, Licht believes that, ‘for many people glasses simply are an essential accessory. They can be used as a fashion statement, like jewellery.’ This idea of frames as fashion can also be seen at one of Berlin’s longest-established

eyewear brands, Cazal. Founded in 1975 by designer Cari Zalloni and entrepreneur Günter Böttcher, Cazal was one of the first truly design-focused eyewear brands in Germany. The pair worked from a ‘style first’ perspective, and Cazal’s extravagant designs paved the way for its 40-year success story. ‘There are a few very “old” producers of eyewear in Germany,’ explains Cazal’s managing director, Beate Obersteiner. ‘They created outstanding and unique designs in the 1970s and 80s. Our brand Cazal is the most famous out of these – a real collector’s brand.’

From pioneering design techniques to unconventional materials, Berlin’s leading names are creating some of the most innovative eyewear today Cazal’s distinctive, fashion-forward frames have grown in popularity throughout the decades, even becoming something of a status symbol in the world of hip hop, with fans including 80s legends Run DMC and popular American rapper Rick Ross. ‘Cazal is one of the brands that has been among the must-haves of really hip people,’ says Obersteiner. ‘Musicians, artists, actors, politicians – they appreciate the unique design which is far removed from trivial fashion trends.’ Add to this the fact that all Cazal creations are impeccably made in Germany, and it’s not hard to see why the brand has had such continued success. Famed for offering everything one could possibly desire under one roof, modern shopping emporia must also be enticing enough to charm customers from their homes and away from the ease of online shopping. Berlin’s KaDeWe has shown itself to be particularly adept at this task, as have its sister stores Oberpollinger in Munich and Hamburg’s Alsterhaus. In order to ensure this continues, the KaDeWe Group is in the midst of overhauling the look and feel of all three
of its retail wonders. It aims to revolutionise the department store concept and bring it firmly into the 21st century. As CEO André Maeder explains, ‘Our department stores are great theme parks, places where you will find extraordinary quality, inspiration, pleasure, styling, entertainment and outstanding service. In competing with international stores and online shopping, the three stores are and will remain the attraction of the future.’ Pritzker Prize-winning architect Rem Koolhaas of OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) has been selected to renovate

women’s fashion quadrant on the second floor, and men’s shoes and accessories on the first. Mahdavi’s soft pink carpets, graduated stone flooring, graphic Bauhaus-style clothing rails and scattered side tables create the feel of a perfectly curated concept store and complement the brands on offer, which include Céline, Balenciaga and Chloé. Architectural firm Storage Milano turned its hand to designing the men’s accessories quadrant, and has given it a sleek, modern and modular layout. Seek out Ted Baker, Valentino, Dries Van Noten and Hugo Boss, among other suave and sophisticated brands. KaDeWe has always been dedicated to displaying the latest trends in fashion, lifestyle and design, and these new floors serve to prove that it can continue to be a leading light of the world’s international department stores. Customers can navigate their way between quadrants thanks to four distinctive concourses with intriguingly designed escalators – the most captivating of which is presented in a concentric circle. This highly original concourse will connect KaDeWe’s

the KaDeWe store, following on from his work on the stunning Fondazione Prada in Milan in 2015. His concept for the Berlin department store sees the building’s 60,000 square metres reimagined as four quadrants, each with its own separate entrance and central atrium, which are tailored to individual customer groups and designed with them in mind. The first phase of the reconstruction, on the side facing Tauentzienstrasse, was completed late last year. The windows were enlarged, echoing the large central glass arch that tops the store, as well as giving a nod to the large windows that the first Kaufhaus des Westens – to give it its full name – had when it opened in 1907. In contrast, the store’s new main entrance, with its mirrored glass and gold and silver touches, offers a modern counterpoint. The store has been keen to take this step into the future while paying tribute to its illustrious history, and it is details such as this that show how the past and present can be married harmoniously. In addition, two of the interior quadrants are now open: the India Mahdavi-designed

interior to its new rooftop restaurant and its final ramp offers stunning views of the city. Lifts will allow visitors to access the delights of the seventh floor, which is due to boast a variety of eateries and bars, and will remain open even after the rest of the store is closed. An open-air garden is also planned, which will provide visitors with a sneak peek into the gourmet floor’s kitchen. Those touring the rest of Germany should be sure to visit Hamburg’s Alsterhaus and marvel at the new Luxury Hall, which will showcase bags by the likes of Saint Laurent and Fendi, jewellery from Bucherer and edible treats from Fortnum & Mason. Over at Oberpollinger in Munich, urbanwear concept The Storey opened late last year, bringing together modern fashion icons such as bomber jackets from Alpha Industries and trainers by Vor. Designed by Gonzalez Haase AAS, the space provides visitors with the chance to discover the latest hip brands in the most stylish of surroundings. Renovations at KaDeWe will continue
With its newly opened quadrants, enticing windows and plans for the future, it’s a perfect time to visit until 2018, with new elements being unveiled over the course of next year. The KaDeWe Group is focused on ensuring the in-store developments do not impinge upon the customer experience, so much of the construction is taking place after hours to minimise the disruption. KaDeWe celebrates its 110th anniversary in 2017. With its newly opened quadrants, enticing windows and exciting plans for the future, there’s never been a better time to visit

NAVYBOOT Head to Navyboot’s store in the Mitte district to discover footwear that showcases the Swiss brand’s exacting attention to detail. Its accessories are just as cleverly designed and made. This metallic tote (from €299), for instance, is a perfectly sized leather shopper for your trip to Berlin. It stands out thanks to its long fringing details, and takes practicality into consideration with its small white zipped wallet that’s handily attached to the bag via a clasp.
38: The Future’s Bright
58: When You Shop The World, Shop Tax Free
