he majority of the world’s greatest cities have one thing in common: a great shopping district. Now, Cologne has joined the ranks with the launch of the Kolumba Quartier, a must-visit retail destination featuring an array of high-end stores, exclusive eateries and visitor attractions.

Sharing its name and location with the city’s acclaimed Kolumba museum – a striking architectural masterpiece housing an extensive collection of fne European art – the Kolumba Quartier has a wide range of stores and restaurants which has helped make this one of the best shopping districts in Germany.

One of Cologne’s fnest menswear stores, Ebinghaus can be found at the heart of the Quartier on Glockengasse. The family-run store was founded in 1975 and became known for stocking high-end Italian labels. Today, its range includes pieces by Ermenegildo Zegna, Canali and Cerruti 1881.

The area is also home to one of Germany’s best family-run womenswear boutiques, Hofus, located on Herzogstrasse. Sabine Hofus-Dümer established the brand in 2000 and runs the business with her daughters Lena and Nora, producing elegant casualwear of the highest quality. More than 95% of Hofus’s collections

are made in Germany and crafted from highquality materials. These include certifed organic cotton yarns and sustainably farmed fabrics, which underpin the company’s commitment to naturally produced sustainable fashion.

As well as providing the perfect outft, the Kolumba Quartier also ofers an array of high-end accessory options. Fine leather accessories specialist Lederwaren Voegels has been providing travel and leather goods in Cologne for over 90 years. The company’s store on Ludwigstrasse remains the go-to destination in the city for luggage and leather brands, and it now stocks a selection of internationally renowned labels such as Bric’s, Rimowa, Samsonite and Victorinox.

Homeware is equally well represented in the district. The Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur (Royal Porcelain Factory) is one of the Kolumba Quartier’s standout stores. Founded

by Frederick II of Prussia in 1763, the brand boasts a rich heritage. It has since been owned by seven kings and emperors and its White Gold collection has been celebrated and coveted throughout Europe for centuries. Today, the brand’s store on Brückenstrasse plays host to a selection of beautifully handcrafted porcelain vases, fgurines and tableware.

Brückenstrasse is also home to audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. This Danish company has long been a pioneer in the feld of sound engineering and is renowned for creating some of the world’s most innovative audiovisual technology. Each product, including televisions, sound systems and headphones, has been carefully crafted by its in-house engineers to ensure unrivalled sound quality.

While visitors to the Kolumba Quartier may be focused on their shopping lists, the area’s impressive range of eateries is far too good to ignore. The Prim accessories collection from street-style icon Michelle Elie is well worth discovering, reports Karen Munnis Fashion week favourite Michelle Elie is well known for being snapped wearing Comme des Garçons’ experimental creations in Milan or Paris. The HaitianAmerican and Cologne-based muse, however, is also a fashion editor for Garage magazine, former model and the designer behind Prim, an art-infuenced accessories and jewellery brand that’s commanding the attention of the style community.

For Prim’s autumn/winter 2015/16 collection, Elie took design inspiration from the brutalist mid-20th-century work of Venetian architect Carlos Scarpa, creating a mix of statement gold jewellery with sharp, geometric lines and bags handcrafted in leather and wood. ‘Scarpa was a brilliant and undervalued architect and he was able to create iconic work which is so relevant now. He included perfect, handcrafted details in his brutalist architecture which was a huge inspiration to me,’ says Elie.

Ornate carvings feature on both Prim’s geometric gold rings – such as the unforgettable Ponti design – and structural wooden handbags, including the Palermo, the Canova and the Veneto. The carvings are reminiscent of Scarpa’s work on the façade of the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice.

Fine craftsmanship has been part of Prim’s brand ethos since its inception. To create each season’s collection, Elie travels to Granada to work with a small group of local Spanish artisans, goldsmiths and woodworkers.

‘Handmade, local craftsmanship is very important to me because it’s a dying industry,’ she says.

Despite her dedication to this fading art, handcrafted work can come with its own unique set of difculties, some of which Elie experienced frst-hand with this collection. ‘[Autumn/winter 2015/16] was challenging because none of my craftsmen spoke English, so my assistant had to always translate what I wanted,’ she explains. ‘I sometimes change the designs a bit too much, which can be a pain for everyone. There were a few mistakes along the way but one learns from those mistakes in the end.’

Regardless of the challenges, the handcrafted quality of Elie’s work is what makes the pieces in Prim’s jewellery and bag collection true investment items. The Condo bracelet, for example, combines the simplicity of a square design with domed details to create something truly covetable that can be paired with anything.

It’s not only architecture that inspires Elie’s designs. For Makak, Prim’s spring/summer 2015 collection, she turned to her Haitian roots and Claude Lévi-Strauss’s anthropological travels to create her tribal-inspired jewellery, including rings topped with bananas, skulls and gorillas. ‘Every collection is diferent due to new impressions and new inspirations that entice my imagination,’ she says. While each season brings something new and unexpected, Elie’s signature design is her Rabbit bag, featuring gold and silver mixed with leather. ‘It’s timeless!’ she exclaims. This season’s version boasts a hotpink and orange interior with a touch of fuf – a great conversation piece at parties.

‘Scarpa was a brilliant and undervalued architect and he was able to create iconic work which is so relevant now’ The name Prim comes from the term ‘prim and proper’ which Elie fell in love with when she decided to launch her brand in 2010.

‘My three boys had enrolled in school and I wanted to go back to work. Since I come from fashion, starting Prim was the obvious way.’

Her husband, art director and photographer Mike Meiré, created the handwritten logo and designed the branding, too. ‘It all ftted perfectly since most of my collection is handcrafted,’ she says.

Elie’s work as a fashion stylist and model has infuenced her work on Prim. ‘I think you are never too far from your experience in your earlier years,’ she says. For example, her choice to wear Rei Kawakubo’s designs for Comme des Garçons is about much more than just garnering street-style appeal. ‘Comme des Garçons is a brand I identify with. It is more than just fashion. It is an ideology and a way of life and it has all the elements that are important to me right now – architecture, form, design, poetry, modernity and timelessness.

It’s never a trend.’ This timelessness is what she hopes will entice people to wear Prim.

Elie explains, ‘It’s for any woman who enjoys wearing jewellery.’

And, looking to the future, who is the inspiration for her spring/summer 2016 collection? ‘A combination of Alexander Calder and Eileen Gray. A mix of shape and interior,’ she reveals. Combining details from Calder’s kinetic sculpture and Gray’s modern movement architecture will certainly produce some unique design concepts. It was perhaps inevitable that Alexander Brenninkmeijer would make a name for himself in fashion. But the minimalistic-chic aesthetic of the men’s and womenswear of his brand Clemens en August was probably not the direction many of his relatives might have expected him to take. Brenninkmeijer’s family was behind the German textiles and fashion retail giant C&A, which throughout the 70s and 80s pioneered a faster kind of cheerful fashion at everyman prices.

At frst glance Brenninkmeijer’s label is as divorced from high-street fashion as might be expected from a line favoured by the diverse likes of actor James McAvoy, artist-flmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson, model Claudia Schifer and architect Rem Koolhaas. Yet it’s born of Brenninkmeijer’s realisation that designer clothes need not be incredibly expensive.

‘There is a market for interesting clothes just as long as you don’t ask a lot of money for them,’ says the entrepreneur, who is currently building investment for major expansion. ‘In my situation I can sometimes aford to buy something more expensive. I might see that something is a nice piece of design but I’m not going to pay €2,000 for it. I’d rather take the risk of waiting for the sales and it still being in my size, which a lot of people do now.’

Brenninkmeijer should know. After a spell as ladies’ dresses and maternity-wear buyer for C&A, he was co-founder of the infuential Kostas Murkudis label. He says that often the pressure on prices is a consequence of rapidly rising property rents and stafng costs.

equivalent quality item would be elsewhere. In order to keep prices down Brenninkmeijer has adopted a radical selling technique.

You won’t fnd Clemens en August in the shops. Brenninkmeijer wanted to avoid buyers cherry-picking the most commercial pieces and breaking up the mood of a complete collection. Nor does Clemens en August have its own stores anywhere. It simply can’t aford a prestigious fagship ‒ not, at least, without a price hike for its clothes. Instead Brenninkmeijer tours with his collection each season, setting up shop for a few days in an art gallery or theatre. He is currently visiting London, Zürich, Vienna, Hamburg, Cologne and four other major German cities.

and buy for the season. ‘It’s personal, people get to know each other, and they get to see the fabrics up close, what makes them special.

There’s a private members’ club mentality,’ he says. Of course, it does not do Clemens en August any harm that this semi-restricted access also gives the label cachet.

‘We’re very much focused on the product and operate kind of of-the-grid,’ he explains. It creates, he says, an insider edge and this works well ‘because in fashion we often want most what we can’t get. Of course, there are other brands that are much cheaper than us,’ he adds ‘but they don’t have the cut, the fabrics or the feel. And we can focus on all that because we don’t have the usual fashion brand overheads.

Back when we started we thought of trying to open just one spectacular store but reckoned it would cost around €10m. We ended up inviting

friends and their friends to come along and see if they liked what we were designing. We still didn’t have a name for the brand then. But it all sold in one evening.’

Yet Clemens en August is closer to the ethos of the family business than is perhaps obvious. Go back to the very origins of the C&A name and you discover a pair of brothers, Messrs Clemens and August, the company founders from whom Brenninkmeijer takes his label’s name. These two started what in 1841 became the pan-European giant by making clothes and selling them in their own of-beat way, too: shop-less, they would travel from region to region and sell high-quality fabrics direct to cash-strapped farmers. Clemens en August does much the same today, only its customers are likely to dress better clemensenaugust.com

TISSOT Tissot has referenced its heritage in its Chemin des Tourelles range of watches, named after the street in Le Locle, Switzerland, where the brand started to manufacture its timepieces in 1907. MY NEIGHBOURHOOD: MORITZ BLEES After studying business in Cologne and Mexico, Moritz Blees travelled around Central America with friends.

During their travels, he and Matthias Köppe became inspired to create Kerbholz, an accessories brand that celebrates the natural beauty of wood. Here, Blees shares his tips on exploring Ehrenfeld, the area of Cologne where he lives and works, with Hannah Lewis

‘The Belgisches Viertel – Belgian Quarter – still ofers some of the best cafés, shops and eateries in town, but it is getting almost too hip for my taste. I prefer Ehrenfeld, which used to be an industrial area and still has a certain sketchiness that I do really like. Most of the best clubs are located here and so is our ofce.

‘I live and work in Ehrenfeld so I naturally spend most of my time here. But Cologne in general is a pretty dense city so it’s easy to get around and explore many places. Walk or take a bike – Cologne is a horrible place for driving.

‘There is a very out-of-the-way shop for vintage furniture at the Fröbelplatz, called Exquisit. The owner Marcel is a nice, funny guy, although for some reason he only

opens the store when he feels like it. Be sure to call ahead for opening times.

‘Cologne is also home to one of the best record stores in the world for afcionados of electronic music, called Kompakt. You can easily spend an entire day here having beers and browsing through records.

‘Magasin 2 * p.62 and Monsieur Courbet * p.62 are, in my opinion, the best fashion shops.

‘Cologne zoo * p.59 is awesome! But nobody ever actually goes there. How come?

It’s very underrated!

‘Königsblut, just of Körnerstrasse, is a nice place for drinks and so is Grünfeld, near the corner of Aachener Strasse and Brüsseler Strasse. The people of Cologne really enjoy drinking and eating outside,

and these two places have enough space that you can still get a table when it’s busy.

‘When friends are visiting and I want to show them something new, I go to TeamEscape on Brüsseler Platz.

The concept is roughly this: you are locked in a room and need to solve several puzzles to escape within one hour. It’s extremely fun.

‘My favourite walk in the city is straight down Brüsseler Strasse. For an amazing view, I head to the gates of the Odonien

club at sunrise. On my days of, I try to go for a run in the Stadtwald city forest, and afterwards try to clean up the mess in my home!

‘There are hipster burger places right now all over town, but Karl Hermanns takes it one step further: burrata burgers, trufe burgers, Iberico pork burgers, sweet potato cumin fries and much more, as well as an amazing selection of craft beer and gin. If you want to get into the trend for cool burgers, do it here.

‘There are many local secrets that I can’t tell you … You have to know someone who knows someone to fnd out … One I will share is the beer garden at the Odonien. It has an amazing location, good food, and you can stick around for the parties at night.’

‫بالحرفيّة اليدويّة الحليّة لنّها عل طريق الزوال‪ ".‬وبالرغم من‬ ‫إخلصها لهذا الف ّن الزائل‪ ،‬ل تخلو العمل اليدويّة من الشاكل‬ ‫الخاصة بها وقد اختبت ‪ Elie‬البعض منها ف هذه الجموعة‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تشح قائلة‪" :‬ل تكن مجموعة خريف‪/‬شتاء ‪ 2015/16‬بالسهلة‬ ‫أي من الحرفيّي الذين عملت معهم النكليزيّة‪،‬‬ ‫إذ ل يتحدّث ّ‬ ‫كل ما أريد قوله‪ .‬أبالغ أحياناً‬ ‫لذا ا”ط ّرت مسا ِعدت إل ترجمة ّ‬ ‫ف تغيي التصاميم‪ ،‬ما قد ي’زعج الجميع‪ .‬ارتكبنا بعض الخطاء ف‬ ‫خلل العمل‪ ،‬لك ّننا ف النهاية نتعلّم من أخطائنا‪".‬‬ ‫بغض النظر عن التحدّيات‪ ،‬من الجدير شاء بعض القطع‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫من مجموعة مجوهرات وحقائب ‪ Prim‬لا تتمتّع به من جودة‬ ‫عالية ف الحرفيّة اليدويّة‪ .‬عل سبيل الثال‪ ،‬يدمج سوار ‪Condo‬‬ ‫بساطة تصميم مربّع بتفاصيل مقبّبة لبتكار قطعة مرغوبة عن‬ ‫شء‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫حق‪ ،‬تتناسب مع ّ‬ ‫أي ّ‬ ‫ل ينح– إلهام ‪ Elie‬بالهندسة العمريّة فحسب‪ .‬ففي‬ ‫مجموعة ‪ Makak‬لربيع‪/‬صيف ‪ ،2015‬عادت إل أصولها‬ ‫الهاييتيّة وأسفار ‪ Claude Lévi-Strauss‬ف علم النسان‬ ‫لتبتكر مجوهراتها الستوحاة من القبائل‪ ،‬با فيها خواتم مزخرفة‬ ‫كل‬ ‫بالوز والجمجم والغوريلت‪ .‬تقول الص ّممة‪" :‬تختلف ّ‬ ‫مجموعة عن غيها نتيجة انطباعات ومصادر إلهام جديدة ت’حفّز‬ ‫كل موسم‪،‬‬ ‫مخيّلتي‪ ".‬بالرغم من تقديم شء جديد وغي متوقّع ّ‬ ‫يبقى تصميم ‪ Elie‬الشهر هو حقيبة ‪ Rabbit‬التي تشمل‬ ‫الذهب والفضّ ة مع الجلد‪ .‬تقول بحمسة‪" :‬إنّها قطعة ل تفنى!"‬ ‫تتمتّع هذه الحقيبة هذا الوسم باللّوني الزهري الصارخ والبتقال‬ ‫مع بعض الزغب‪ ،‬ما يجعلها حديث الناس ف الحفلت‪.‬‬ ‫يشتق السم ‪ Prim‬من التعبي “‪ ”prim and proper‬أي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫"رصي" بالعربيّة وقد أ’غرِمت ‪ Elie‬به عندما ق ّررت إطلق علمتها‬ ‫سنة ‪" .2010‬دخل أبنائ الثلثة الدرسة ورغبت بالعودة إل‬ ‫لدي الخبة ف مجال الو”ة‪ ،‬كان إطلق ‪Prim‬‬ ‫العمل‪ .‬وبا أنّه ّ‬ ‫منطقي‪ ".‬قام زوجها الدير الف ّني والص ّور ‪Mike Meiré‬‬ ‫لم ٌر‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بابتكار الشعار الكتوب يدويّاً وبتصميم هويّة العلمة‪ .‬تقول‬ ‫كل شء مع بعضه بامتياز إذ معظم مجموعتي‬ ‫‪" :Elie‬تاش ّ‬ ‫مصنوعة يدويّاً"‪.‬‬ ‫كمنسقة ملبس وعار”ة أزياء أث ٌر‬ ‫كان لعمل ‪ Elie‬السابق ّ‬ ‫عل ‪ .Prim‬فتقول‪" :‬أعتقد أنّك ل تقطع الصلة أبدا ً بخبتك ف‬ ‫السنوات السابقة‪ ".‬عل سبيل الثال‪ ،‬ل ينح– اختيارها ارتداء‬ ‫تصاميم ‪ Rei Kawakubo‬لعلمة ‪Comme des Garçons‬‬ ‫بالظهور بأسلوب الشارع فحسب‪ .‬تقول ف هذا الصدد‪" :‬أرى أنّني‬ ‫أنتمي لعلمة ‪ .Comme des Garçons‬إنّها أكث من مج ّرد‬ ‫كل العناص التي ته ّمني‬ ‫أزياء‪ .‬إنّها هويّة وأسلوب حياة وتشمل ّ‬ ‫الن؛ الهندسة العمريّة والشكل والتصميم والشعر والحداثة‬ ‫بأي حال من الحوال‪ ".‬تأمل ‪ Elie‬أن‬ ‫واللزمنيّة‪ .‬ليست مو”ة ّ‬ ‫اللزمنيّة هذا الشخاص إل اختيار ‪ .Prim‬وتقول‪:‬‬ ‫يحثّ عن– ّ‬ ‫تحب التزيّن بالجوهرات"‪.‬‬ ‫"إنّها علمة ّ‬ ‫لكل مرأة ّ‬ ‫وف الستقبل‪ ،‬من سيكون ملهم مجموعتها لربيع‪/‬صيف‬ ‫"دمج بي ‪Alexander Calder‬‬ ‫–ح قائلة‪ٌ :‬‬ ‫‪2016‬؟ ت ّ‬ ‫و‪ .Eileen Gray‬خلي ٌط بي الشكل والداخل‪ ".‬ل ّ‬ ‫شك أن مزج‬ ‫تفاصيل من نحت ‪ Calder‬الحرك وحركة ‪ Gray‬للهندسة‬ ‫العمريّة الحديثة سي’ولّد مفاهيم تصميمٍ فريدة من نوعها‪ .‬نتح ّرق‬ ‫شوقاً لرؤية إبداعات ‪.Elie‬‬ ‫‪michelleelie.com‬‬ ‫‪globalblue.com‬‬
